Re-drawing this Teen Garmadon drawing from a few months ago but as Zane:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One day i might actually do a redraw of the Garmadon one. Today is not that day.
Yes, this is Zane after crying. Yes, this is a weakened Zane after the whole Ice Emperor thing. Yes, he’s looking at Lloyd with a bunch of love and care (platonically).
Tbh i was also messing around with how to draw Zane. He’s my favourite ninja but GOD his hair is a pain to draw for some reason.
No background because ain’t no one got time for that 🦆
I have also no idea if tumblr ever saw my teen garmadon one, but if it hasnt then apologies it looks like butt 🙏
Tbh, i also struggled hard with choosing Zanes skin tone. I didn’t know if i wanted him yellow, grey, white, or black and just spun a wheel in my head. It chose black, but i couldn’t let go of the grey so here we are.

NINJAGO DRAGONS RISING SEASON 2 PART 1 SPOILERS!
So, after seeing Jay in part one of season 2, I began to wonder how Jay could become a villain, as many people have theorized (I love these theories so much, I would love to see him have a villain arc!).
Here's how I think it could happen with what we know about Jay now (sort of told in a story form....I'm a fanfic writer, so that's my default lol):
Jay was used to emptiness. Ever since he lost his memories, there was a void inside of him, a void created by not knowing. Not knowing who he was before the Merge. Not knowing his favorite color. Not knowing what he was like. Not knowing if anyone out there loved him. Not knowing if he even liked himself.
It was a numbing feeling, like staying still while the world moved around him, like being left behind as everyone moved ahead. He couldn't feel anything with that emptiness, that numbness in his heart. Perhaps feelings were something one gained from knowing who you were. Knowing where you came from. Knowing who loved you.
He pretended he could feel, that his world wasn't numb inside, and it worked to the people around him, but he could never trick himself.
Nothing in the Administration could fill that void. Nothing could make him feel much of anything. He tried to fill the void with paperwork, and then videogames, yet nothing could make him feel like there was something in him. That there was something about his life worth celebrating. Nothing made him feel like he was a person, someone with a history, someone people could like. Nothing made him feel real. Everyone at the Administration just treated him like another worker, which he guessed he was, and the emptiness grew.
The emptiness got bigger when he discovered that he could control lightning. He found that he had all that power, so much strength, yet no one to celebrate it with. Which made the power useless, didn't it? He couldn't use it in the Administration or else he could get terminated, he couldn't tell anyone, he couldn't do anything with it. It became just as useless as everything else about him, the him now and most likely the him from before.
The excitement he had felt soon disappeared, along with the worry. There was nothing he could do about it, and the numbness returned.
When he met that skeleton-person when the Administration was sent to find the machine known as Zane, Jay felt something change in him. The person had looked at him with confusion when he spoke up, and showed some care to how he felt about the job he was in. Sure, she was probably just trying to escape, but her words filled the emptiness, made him feel like a person, that there was something more to him that just a member of the Administration. And when he saw himself, dressed in something close to a ninja gi, in the yellow orbs reflection, he felt confusion and awe, the void filling once again.
It was in that moment that he wanted the void filled completely. He didn't want to live as an empty shell anymore. He wanted to be a person, someone more than an agent. And he hungered for it.
He was tired of being empty. He wanted to feel again. He wanted to be someone.
So, he escaped the Administration, leaving it as quickly as he could, searching, fighting to fill that void again, to feel more than numb, to find out who he could be. Could he be more than what he was? Was he meant to be someone incredible?
That was when Lord Ras found him. Ras promised Jay a life that he could be proud of, that would make Jay worth something, that his name would be known. That he could feel more than he had felt in years. That the void that Jay felt could be filled.
The emptiness in him screamed to be filled again, and he could already feel Ras' praises, his promises, filling it.
Jay didn't hesitate to put on the wolf mask that was handed to him.
And, with the resounding note of a gong, the emptiness was gone.

MAJOR NINJAGO DR SEASON 2 SPOILERS BELOW❗️❗️ DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVENT WATCHED ALL 10 EPISODES. (unless you want major spoilers, I guess??)
Just some notes and commentary about the new season!! (I will die because of this season.)
V V V V
When the group was in the cave facing their fears in the darkness, we were showed everyone's fears EXCEPT Kai's (and Wyldfyre's and Riyu's but Wyldfyre said something about, 'the wasting'??) Lloyd's was not being good enough to be a master, Sora's was being controlled by Imperium again, Arins was being afraid of not finding his parents and if they even still loved him, and lastly Nya's was Jay not knowing who she was. I was SO sad when she said "I know the real Jay could never forget me." BECAUSE HE DID, BUT NOT PURPOSEFULLY AAAAA I WILL PERISH.
But I really wanna know what Kai saw, he was the only one who's wasn't shown or even talked about, but after it happened he seemed to still be thinking about it, like, he was looking down into space or smth.
Also, that flashback Geo had when Cole was gone?? Kinda gay man ngl.. (but I live them so much)😂
I LOVED THE COLE AND ZANE DUO RECOGNITIONNN!!! I LOVE THAT DUOOO
When Jay was trying to capture Bonzle, Sprite (the weird yellow orb) showed him himself, what he was supposed to be, a ninja. And it revealed his lightning powers and he said something like "Thats MY secret that I have lightning powers!" I LOVED THAT BUT ALSO YOU DUMBASS YOU NEED TO REMEMBER😡😡
BRO. KAI IS IN THE FUCKING PORTAL. IT LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING BACKROOMS LEVEL😭😭 I think we know what Doc Wyatt meant about Kai now..😢 I NEED HIM BACK BRO. THE CLIFFHANGERRRRRR KMS RN. (/j)
IT WAS SO GOOD BUT.. AAAAAAA WHYYY *violent sobbing*
Honestly, it kinda felt like a whole different show! The lore seems pretty different. (Also what happened to Kai's hair in episode 9??? It looked a little wonky-)
I love how Kai was the first one to achieve the rising dragon form, then Nya, then Lloyd. Kai's encouragement was Nya, Nya's encouragement was Kai being taken, and Lloyd's encouragement was the visions and realizing he needed to connect with the motion. (And because their fate kinda depended on him to do it sooo.. pressure lol!!)
I love how (I need to stop starting every sentence with this) the thing that was holding Kai back was his anger and emotions. They've held him back a lot especially in the pre – s8 seasons.
That's it for now, if you aren't already bored of reading this. I might add more if I realize more. (Jebus this is long)

Your First Kiss
Jiang Kai | Kai Kalama (She/They)
Reader was sat on the floor of her apartment, leaning back against Kai's legs as he flipped through channels on the tv. They had a new sketch due in two days, so they were hoping for inspiration.
The parameters for the project were pretty simple; primary color (red, yellow, blue), one accent color (gold or silver), and female model.
Above her, Kai suddenly leaned over them to look in their eyes, "What if you did something based of Azula? You know, from Avatar. She's got red and gold in her design doesn't she?"
Blinking, Reader turned it over in her mind before nodding. Focusing back on him, she was unsurprised to find his gaze on their lips. Doing their best to not let him know that they saw his gaze, they spoke, "That's good. She does have red, though its more maroon but I can tweak the colors a bit to fit the parameters. Thank you, Kai."
He flushed, leaning back as Reader fought to hide a wider smile. For nearly three months, since they'd begun hanging out, she'd noticed how his eyes constantly strayed to their lips or how focused he'd get whenever they spoke. It was sweet, and was defintely not helping their crush. So today, they decided to do something about it.
Later, after dinner, Kai was at the door preparing to leave. "Well, I guess I should leave a pretty person all alone in their apartment to work on their project." He winked making Reader laugh.
"Kai . . ." Reader trailed off, summoning all of their confidence. "Tell me if you don't want this."
"What–"
Cupping his face, Reader pulled him down a little as they reached up a bit to press a kiss against his lips. Their lips slotted together perfectly, fitting like puzzle pieces. The kiss only lasted for a few seconds, as Kai had frozen in shock.
"Sorry. I thought–"
Kai interrupted her this time, slamming their lips back together as he pushed her against the wall beside the door, hands falling to their hips as Reader wrapped their arms around his neck to keep him close.
Reader couldn't help but notice that he tasted like cinnamon, likely from the gum he loved to chew on all the time. Kai noticed how Reader tasted like the fruity wine they'd had with dinner and nearly moaned at the taste.
Pulling away, but not pulling apart completely, he pressed their heads together. "So, can I take you on a date?"
"Time, date, and place?"
"Next Saturaday, 7, and you'll see."
"I'll see you then, Kalama," Reader teased, seperating. Kai obediantly stepped outside, reverantly touching his lips when the doors closed.
Zane Julien (She/Her)
Zane mediatated peacefully to the quiet sounds of Reader painting, her playlist, and the soft humming. He felt at peace in the whirlwind that was her studio, eventually opening his eyes to see what she was painting.
It was the Aurora Borealis, with a wolf pack tilting their heads back to howl in unison. He was amazed by the motion you'd managed to capture in the painting.
"It looks incredible," Zane complimented, startling Reader into nearly dropping her palette.
"Oh shit!" He was quick to catch it, much to her relief. "Oh thank the dragons. Thank you for the compliment, and the catch."
"Do not thank me, it was my fault for startling you."
"You still caught it for me. So I'm going to thank you. Thank you Zane," Reader stated, smiling as she took the palette back.
Zane smiled softly, starstruck as she turned back to the painting. Standing just behind her, he remembered something Nya had said he should do, based on his feelings and how Reader acted around him.
'Ask permission to kiss her, then take her on a date. But don't push her.'
"Reader," Zane said, quickly catching her attention. She turned to him, setting her pallette down to give him her full attention. "I have a question, but I do not wish for you to feel pressured."
"I wouldn't let myself he forced into anything," Reader agreed, tilting her head.
"Of course." Zane hesitated, stepping closer, flustering her. "May I . . . May I kiss you, Reader?"
Reader seemed to freeze, soft lips parting in surprise. After waiting for nearly thirty seconds, Zane was disappointed by the lack of answer but took it in stride. "I apologize, I did not—"
"Was my asking an issue?"
"No, no!" Reader interrupted, waving her hands around. "You don't need to apologize! I was just surprised! Promise! You're not normally so outspoken, so . . ."
"Just a surprise."
"You still have not answered the question," Zane noted, tilting his head slightly. Blushing, Reader ducked her head down in emberresment.
"I-yes. Yes, you can . . . you can kiss me," Reader whispered, standing a little taller as Zane stepped into their space.
Slowly he pressed their lips together, not wanting to rush and accidentally hurt her. The kiss was soft, chaste and made Reader pleasantly cold as Zane felt his core warm in pleasure. Pulling away, he found his own smile widening when he saw Reader looking at him with a wide smile of their own.
"May I take you out? On a date?"
"Y-yes! Yes!"
"Then tomorrow? At 7?"
"Perfect."
"I shall pick you up then," Zane decided, still smiling. Giggling Reader stepped into his space to sink into a hug.
"I can't wait."
Cole Brookstone (They/Them)
The stars were bright as Reader and Cole laid in a grassy meadow Cole had taken them too. Head resting on Cole's stomach, Reader had a surprisingly good view of Cole's reaction every time he spoke lowly, in order to keep the peace of course.
Tonight was Ninjagos Festival of Stars, recently adopted from the Serpentine but neither of them were fans of large crowds and wanted to see the stars and fireworks alone. So Reader had packed a nighttime picnic, with Cole hovering over their shoulder in anticipation.
Mooncakes, Star shaped iced cookies, and multiple blackberry flavored treats. They'd also brought along their starry night themed drink, with blueberries, bananas, and kiwi syrups to make it a stunning array of colors.
Cole had, of course, nearly devoured his portion in a half hour as Reader talked about their day, and some issues they'd noticed recently, eating far slower.
"So, what made you invite me out to watch the stars? Is it just 'cause ya knew I'd bring ya food?" Reader asked, without opening their eyes.
"What, no! All of the others wanted to go to the festival and celebrate, but I wasn't in the mood to celebrate. I'd rather hang out with you," Cole admitted.
"Really? Me? Mr. Ninja wants to hang out with an uninteresting civilian?"
"Your not uninteresting, which I'm not sure is a word by the way. Your just . . . You're normal, and I need that in my life. And you're fun in a different way."
"Well, thank you for the compliment. Any specific reason you don't like festivals? Or is it private?"
Cole knew that all he had to say was that it was private and he would drop it, but he wanted to share. "My mom used to take me out to festivals all the time when I was younger. She had a piggy bank specifically for those days that I could add change too. It was my money to use to do whatever I wanted with during the festival. When she died, I stopped going. It doesn't feel the same anymore."
Reader was silent, thinking. "When I lost my parents, I no longer thought it was worth it. To live. It took me three years to truly start enjoying the world and some days its still hard." Glancing up, they met eyes. "If you ever decided you want to try, I'd be happy to take you. We could make it a date."
"A date?" Cole sat up, worrying Reader who sat up as well.
"It doesn't . . . have to be a date. Not if you don't want it to be."
"Well, what if I want it to be a date?"
Reader smiled, leaning closer as their eyes flicked towards Cole's lips. "I'd like that."
Smiling softly, Cole and Reader leaned closer together until their lips were barely a centimeter apart. "Would you be upset if I kissed you?" Cole asked, trying to hide his nerves.
"Not at all."
Grinning, Cole eagerly pressed their lips together, twisting until he was hovering over Reader. Fingers wove into his black hair, tugging him closer to them as they made out beneath the stars.
Cole eventually forced himself to pull out of their hold, lips glistening and red as he panted. Reader was not much better, shirt having ridden up at some point. "Well . . . that was not what how I thought tonight would turn out," Cole admitted with a goofy grin.
Reader laughed, eyes bright. "So, we still on for that date?"
"Absolutely."
Jay Walker (She/her)
Lightning flashed across the sky, followed closely by the crack of thunder, making Reader groan. She and Jay were both caught in the rain, having been taking a short break from working on one of his older Mechs.
"Well, this sucks," Reader grumbled, huddling beneath the glass cover of a bus station as Jay watched the lightning sparking in the sky with a strange sort of awe and reverance. Nudging him, she broke the spell cast by the bright flashes. "Everything ok, sparky?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Just, ehehe, get a little excited during thunderstorms," Jay explained, allowing a spark to flit through his fingers in demonstration.
"That's . . ." Reader trailed off as lightning struck again, highlighting the sharp angular, boyish features Jay had, bringing out his freckles and auburn hair. "That's pretty cool. Don't think I'll ever get used to people fighting with elements though."
"Seriously? You've hung out with Nya for years, how is it still so weird!"
"I don't know! It just is!"
"Maybe you're the weirdo."
"Huh," Reader gasped, as if truly offended. Grabbing their imaginary pearls, she draped herself across the bench. "To slay me with such cruel words, oh how I die. Must this be the way death comes for me."
Jay laughed, plopping down behind her so she could rest her head on his thighs. He smiled down at her, trying hard to keep his blush down, and failing miserably.
"You're turning pink," Reader mused, poking his cheek as her eyes sparkled with mischief. "Is it because you've fallen for my beauty?"
Jay felt his lips twitch downwards when he heard the sarcasm. He was far less oblivious than people thought and he'd realized a while back that Reader did not think themselves pretty. Just . . . Average.
"Would that . . . be bad?"
Readers smile fell as she stared up at him in shock, "Jay . . ."
"I really want to kiss you."
"Then do it."
Leaning down, she reached up, meeting him in the middle. Neither noticed how the lightning seemed to cover the sky, with barely a secons between the flashes. They were too focused on the press of their lips, on memorizing how the others face felt beneath their fingertips.
Pulling away, Reader giggled, quickly joined by Jay. Their was no real reason to laugh but she was happy and so was he.
"So when can I take you on a date, Mr. Blue Ninja?" Reader asked, laughing at the look he gave her.
"Hey! I'm supposed to ask you out!"
"Too late." He tried to sulk but another kiss had him relaxing into a giddy smile. "Fine. I'll go out on a date with you."
"I'll plan a good date, scouts honor."
"You've never been a scout!"
"Oops."
Lloyd Garmadon (She/her)
Reader was happily pressed against Lloyd's side as they walked, liking the comfort of his arm draped over her shoulder. They'd gone windowshopping in the nearby mall for her hour break and were finishing up to walk back, not that Rufus would mind all that much if she was a few minutes late.
"Ooh, look at that," Reader said, pointing to a shoe store. In the display window were Ninja-themed shoes, with Lloyd's being the most prominent.
Lloyd saw what she was looking at and groaned, cheeks flushing, "Please tell me you're not going to buy those. They're like 100$."
Reader pouted, looking up at him with puppy dog eyes, "But I thought you liked seeing me in your merch?" She'd noticed it a few weeks ago when she'd worn a green ninja shirt, seen how wide his eyes had gotten and how stuttery and blushy he'd gotten.
Just like right now.
"Wh‐well, of course, but still . . ." Lloyd trailed off, looking away to hide his face.
Giggling, Reader patted his bicep, pleased at the feel of muscle beneath the long sleeved shirt he wore. "I'm kidding, sweets. They're cute, but too expensive for my taste. Besides, I'd look better in one of the Green Ninja sweaters that one store was selling."
Somehow, Lloyd's blush darkened as he whined, "Reader."
"Lloyd," Reader cooed, delighting even further in his blush.
Suddenly, looking past him she spotted Ryker, very obviously looking around for someone. In a heartbeat their eyes met and he started towards her, making her freak out slightly.
"Lloyd."
He immediatley caught the change in her voice and followed her eyes to see where she was looking. Seeing Ryker, he cussed and pulled her towards a hallway between stores to try and hide.
"He already saw me," Reader admitted nervously. Lloyd watched the entrance, tense, as Reader tried to think up a plan.
Grabbing his shirt, she tugged him close until he was pressing her against the wall. Gaping down at her, he seemed frozen in place.
"Trust me?" Reader asked softly, eyes wide. Lloyd nodded, softening marginally.
"Of course."
Leaning up, she pressed their lips together making Lloyd freeze for only a second before he leaned into it. He gently cupped her cheek, keeping the kiss soft and slow as her own hands found their way into soft golden-blond hair.
Neither noticed when Ryker found them, nor when he realized just who was kissing Reader. Furious the man turned away and fled, stomping away as they stayed pressed together.
"So, sweets, when do you plan on taking me out?" Reader asked, breathless. Lloyd stared down at her, emerald eyes alight with awe.
"Friday, at 6. We're going somewhere fancy," Lloyd decided, smiling widely.
Reader giggled, using her grip on his head to tug him back down into a kiss, "Sounds good to me."
Morro (She/Her)
Morro was passed out on Readers couch, sleeping off the inherent exhaustion that came from his longer missions. She was curled against the side pressed against the couch, watching a movie on low so she wouldn't wake him.
Head resting on his shoulder, with his arm loosely wrapped around her side she couldn't help but blush, thinking about what people would say if they saw their position. It was intimate, even for friends. Her face had been warm the entire time they'd been cuddling, though she hoped he hadn't noticed.
Sudden movement from the hand on her hip startled her, making her glance down. Morro was rubbing at the exposed skin of her hip bone with his thumb.
"This alright?" He asked, voice a low rasp from just waking.
"Yeah," Reader mumbled, pressing her face into his chest. "Just fine. Perfect."
He chuckled, embarresing her further. They fell back into silence, though Reader's mind was running a thousand miles an hour.
"Hey, Morro?"
"Hmmm."
"Do you–" She cut herself off to sit up a bit to look him in the face. Morro's eyes were half-lidded but attentive. "Can I take you out? On-on a date?"
Morro's eyes sprang open as he gaped in shock. Fearfully, Reader began stuttering, "B-but not, not if you don't want too! Of course you don't have to agree! Just asking!" She tried to push the tears in her eyes back as Morro sat up, without saying anything.
With a gentleness few thought he was capable of, Morro rested a large hand on her cheek, forcing her to meet his dark grey-green eyes. "Can I kiss you?"
At her shocked expression, he laughed.
"Y-yeah."
Still grinning smugly, he pressed their lips together, wrapping an arm around her waist to keep her close. He barely let her come up for air before diving back in, like she was his air.
Finally he let them seperate, panting slightly, "I'm taking you out. Friday night, wear something you can walk in."
"O-okay." Eagerly she leaned back in for another kiss making his grin as he met her in the middle.

BEEN THERE ONCE BEFORE AND I WISH THAT I NEVER DIED
Pairings: none Word count: 6500 Warning: Graphic depictions of violence and death. Gore, murder, Ear trauma and limb loss tw
Summary: Zane would do anything to keep the ninja safe.
*
There is a pot of tea between you, sitting in Master Wu's private garden right outside the door to his room, and it’s some sort of oolong blend with a sweet smelling screen hanging over it. Osmanthus flowers float in your cup and you trace their pattern, watching them shift idly in what little breeze this summer day has brought you. The tea is too bitter despite the honey you’d added, over-steeped and thick on your tongue.
There is a sword on his lap, a sleek red sheath and neatly wrapped handles. There are no adornments on this blade, it is plain and unassuming, a tool for its master and whatever that may entail. Master Wu had asked you out here, months after the desperate fight for Ninjago at the corridor of elders (even longer after you had been torn apart by a power that was never yours to hold,) and the rattlesnake smile he’d offered as he’d led you out vanished the moment you were hidden from prying eyes. He makes your tea silently, and he burns it.
He looks at you in a way that makes you bristle, with eyes that no longer see you as human. Your silver skin itches, your tea tastes like ash.
“Do you know what a ninja is, historically?” He asks you finally, his voice quiet but clear over the space between you.
You do not, but you could look it up in an instant. You don’t do that either. He does not expect you to answer.
“They were said to be assassins. Hired blades sent to the house of the lands lord to slaughter them- the last recorded deaths by these assassins was years and years ago, but that was not the end of the era of the ninja. They snuck between the shadows, they pulled their hidden weapons, and they eliminated their targets cleanly and efficiently.” He waits, gauging your reaction. You can feel his eyes sit heavy on where your hands are deceptively calm around your tea cup, assessing, searching for something like he had that day he’d first laid eyes upon you in the frozen pond.
A phantom of a red flashes across your HUD that screams DANGER- and despite how there is no real warning clawing its way across your eyes, you know you should be afraid anyway. Tread carefully, you are in dangerous territory. Do not react. Control.
“Is this a history lesson?”
“Perhaps.” Master Wu murmurs, finding something in your expression with those dark eyes.
“The best way to defeat my enemy is to make him my friend.” You can’t help but say, a parrot of his own words, your eyes calculating.
“And if your kindness is rejected?” He does not skip a beat.
You hesitate, the clink of your cup as you set it down on the table too loud on your ears.
“You are no longer a child, Zane. Your innocence died with the Overlord. The others still have that innocence.” You jerk, the reminder of your death bruising on your soul, but he doesn't handle you with kid gloves, “You’ve killed once, to protect them.” Sensei Wu does not touch his tea, and there is a rising sickness in your stomach, “Can you do it again?”
He draws the blade and it’s blood red, holding it out to you, handle first.
To protect them?
His eyes are dark and there’s a danger there, but he has always been kind to you. Like a father when yours had vanished, warm smiles and encouraging words flashing across your eyes. Visions of fire and blood and death color your head along with it, superimposed on top of your friends and family. You’d do anything to protect the people you love, wouldn’t you?
The sword is a healthy weight in your palm.
---
Police tape surrounds a dilapidated old building, great yellow swathes of it wrapped down the sidewalk into the street and officers at each corner standing vigil over the body slumped half in the gutter and covered by a sheet. News vans line the street waiting for the opportunity to film once the coroner has packed away the gore and it’s mostly family-friendly for the afternoon broadcast. Flood lights and lamps are set up around the premise, little yellow evidence markers salting the earth down the doors of the warehouse and up to the body. Apparently deceptively unassuming, the Mechanics home base is filled to the brim with his lackeys and stolen tech- or, it was.
“I guess the Mechanic got tangled up with the wrong guy.” Kai says breathlessly, spooked as the camera pans over the overflowing body bags being loaded into the coroner's van.
The Commissioner taps the remote to his VCR on his leg anxiously, “You heard on the news already, i’m sure, but we suspect the unsub used a long blade of some kind,” He’s visibly shaken, “A sword, perhaps- the evidence was very…” he makes a slashing motion from his throat, miming blood striping the wall behind him.
A blood spattered window, the killing so brutal a heavy streak of gore laced up the glass, is still visible to the probing crime scene photographer.
The graying man slides a manila folder thick with printed pictures across the table and Jay pointedly pushes it away from himself, looking queasy. You reach out and pick it up with hands that seem to float endlessly away from your body, but you’ve felt like this since stumbling home two nights ago when the moon was full and no one else was awake. You don’t hesitate to open it, staring down at the first photo with mild surprise.
Cole jerks away before steeling himself and glancing back over. The picture shouldn’t surprise you, but it does anyway. It looks so messy. The body in the street can barely be recognized in the photo, too mutilated- the only identifying feature being the mechanical hand resistant to the blades of a sword. The mechanic had been reduced to mince meat, blood seeping up through shredded flesh and broken bones. Blood flows in a river down the stairs of the warehouse, down onto the sidewalk, flowing into the gutters.
“This seems… motivated.” Lloyd grimaces at the image but doesn’t look away.
“That’s certainly one word for it,” The commissioner huffs, “We’ve been calling it ‘unhinged.’”
You flip to the next image. Bodies piled on top of each other, strewn across the room, throats slit and bellies gutted and in one particularly horrific scene brain matter and skull fragments rendering a man unrecognizable.
Your memories of that night are fuzzy and nebulous.
Nya takes one of the photos, “Who would do something like this?”
“We were hoping you knew,” A beat- the man sighs, “The mechanic, he’s hard to keep tabs on. We didn’t really know who his enemies were other than those present, and you all had the most contact with him, but it’s too much to hope you have a lead for us, huh?”
He blows out an explosive breath, “Tell me, does the attack itself look familiar in any way? Anyone who comes to mind who has the capability to do something like that?”
You shake your head, blue boring holes into the eyes of a henchman who died trying to hold his intestines inside his gut, “No,” Your voice doesn't waver, “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
---
Wu touches your shoulder firm and bruising but your skin cant purple under his nails anymore, “It gets easier.”
---
You stand in the threshold of the jail cell, the body in the room covered by a sheet. You had wondered if that really happened, bodies covered up by the police like in television dramas- this is the second time you’ve seen it. It won’t be the last. It’s interesting to know how fiction gets it right, sometimes. Kai distinctly can’t look, turned away, but you haven't been squeamish in a long time. You crouch low, reaching for the edge of the blanket to see, and Nya makes a disgusted noise in the back of her throat when you lift the sheet to look.
This death is far more refined than the massacre you’d investigated this month- A clean cut across his throat, blood coating his sleep shirt and dried to the corners of his mouth. Droplets of red sprinkle his face where he’d tried to breathe through the ruined hole of his throat, coughing a plume of blood into the air that rained down on him as he died. His skin is waxy and his eyes glazed and clouded, he’s been dead for hours- but you knew that already.
Nya coughs, “Can you cover him up, please?”
You oblige, “I was trying to see what Information I could gather.” the sheet falls back over his face, hiding him away. There’s no reason to cover him up, the other inmates are locked in their cells until the investigation finishes and the body is removed. Privacy is a moot point, but maybe it’s about respect.
Lloyd turns away from where he’s shifting through the inmates belongings, “Well, anything?”
“He was killed hours ago. He’s been dead for a long while.” How much to say? “The murder weapon was a blade.”
“Same as the Mechanic.” Jay says from where he’s outside the cell and out of line of sight, the dead body and blood making him sick, “Did Fugi-Dove and him have any connections?”
“Not that we know of.” Nya frowns, crossing her arms over her chest and trying to convince everyone she’s unaffected by this, “Only us. It just seems so weird- He’s a small fry compared to the mechanic, why kill him? He’s harmless!”
“He broke Jay's elbow last week,” You remind her, “He was not harmless. Perhaps he had more secrets than we thought.”
“Who found him?” Cole murmurs, carefully keeping away from touching the crime scene.
“Eight AM guard round,” You answer him, standing up, “The four AM patrol missed him. Both officers were interrogated, but nothing came of it. It doesn’t appear to have been an inside job.”
“The culprit snuck into kryptarium prison, killed a man, and snuck out with none the wiser?” Nya snorts, “This place has gone to the dogs.”
Jay taps his foot impatiently and it echoes down the hallway, “Well, it’s not like Warden Noble runs a very tight ship around here, despite what he wants you to think. How many escaped convicts do we deal with on a weekly basis?”
“So what do we do about this?” Kai asks, frowning at the lump on the ground.
Fugi-dove was half slumped off his bed, his back flush to the ground and his legs still thrown over his bed and tangled up in his bedsheets. He’d been awake when he was attacked, his cheeks bitten to hell as if he’d attempted to scream through a hand sealed over his mouth that only let go once his vocal cords had been slashed through, and in his desperate attempt to stop from bleeding out or drowning in his own blood he’d thrashed himself right to the floor.
“We’ll look at the tapes and see what we can find.” Lloyd answers casually. Darkleys prepared him for death and gore, it didn’t bother him like it should.
“I thought officer Pey told us we were in a blind spot,” Cole points out, stepping out of the cell followed by Lloyd.
“Warden Noble used to be the principle of Darkleys,” the green ninja waits for you to join them on the other side of the cell. You feel cold all over, “And if there’s one thing I'm certain of, the man has eyes everywhere.”
“Does he?” You ask, fingers going numb.
Lloyd nods and locks the cell door behind you, “There will be tapes. He should be here any minute now, Officer Pey says he comes in at 10:00 on Saturdays.”
As if on cue, the Warden appears in a frenzy, tearing into the hallway and bee lining for the cell. He grimaces at the covered up body, “I leave Pey in charge for one night…” He sighs, pushing his glasses up to rub at his eyes, “Great.”
“Good morning, Warden.” Jay greets cheerfully.
“Says who?” The man replies darkly, “The media is gonna tear me a new one. This is going to lower our reputation even more.”
“Let us help you put the culprit behind these bars,” Lloyd offers, stepping forward with green ninja grace.
“I don’t think that’d do any good, he already got out once.” Kai mutters.
The warden graciously ignored Kai’s comment, “I haven't even had coffee yet.” He complains, running a rough hand over his mouth as he glares at the body.
“You had hidden cameras?” Lloyd pushes and the Warden nods, motioning to an inconspicuous looking fire alarm.
“It’s fake,” He tells him.
You walk towards it. A strange sense of doom washes over you, numbness following it. A camera. Evidence. How clearly would they be able to see the killer's face?
“Let me be of assistance,” You offer, casually making it to the alarm first. The moment you manage to open the glorified nanny cam and your fingers close around the USB, you focus a concentrated pulse of electromagnetic energy and wipe it clean. Anything saved to the storage space will have been obliterated, gone, corrupted and unsalvageable. You can feel your hands again.
“How could this have happened?” The warden asks, clicking through the empty USB over and over looking for footage that no longer exists.
Lloyd glances at you, but there’s no suspicion, “Was there anything weird about the camera? Had it been tampered with?”
You touch your chin and try not to let your hands shake, “No, but it was not a very complex mechanism. It could easily have been opened by someone familiar with this type of surveillance.”
“Someone from Darkleys?” Nya suggests.
Lloyd hums in thought, “I don’t know. It’s worth looking into.”
“When did we become detectives?” Jay complains, “Can’t you guys just call us when you need us to spinjitzu this guy?”
“Don’t be a baby.”
Jay pulls a face at that, “I’m a ninja! I shouldn’t have to put up with all this- this blood!”
“Do you know what a ninja is, historically?” you murmur.
No one hears you.
---
There are four more deaths the following month, both somewhat well-known villains with a penchant for collateral damage. The same slashing wounds as the last. Lloyd is the only person in the group who doesn’t look affected by the barrage of gore he’s being subjected to- other than you, of course. He’s reading over the newest police report that’d come their way with a hum, “He’s getting bolder.” He concludes, flipping through the crime scene pictures at the end.
“Bolder?” Cole questions, “It seems to me like he’s winding down. His first kill was the Mechanic and everyone working under him- 16 deaths on that one alone. Now he’s down to one.”
“The Mechanic was messy,” he examines the pictures, noting just how clean the newest death was. Not a drop of blood out of place other than the pool growing under the body, “He was surprised by all the people- he never intended to kill anyone other than their leader, that’s why that kill was so disorganized. It’s why the mechanic was nearly able to escape, before he caught him in the street. The bank barely needed to mop the floor for this one. He’s refined his skill.”
“He left Reflectras sidekick unharmed.” Kai pointed out, “What’s different between then and now?”
Lloyd flipped a picture his way- it’s a still from a grainy security camera. Reflectra is already dead in the photo, her blood turned black on the monochromatic footage. The teen girl she’d been toting around with her was cowering under the teller counter, and standing just outside the blood was a figure dressed in all black. From the girl's testimony, the gray toned lion's mask he wore was red and gold in person, lips drawn back in a snarl that showed off fangs, a thick head of coarse blonde hair coming out of the mask to hide any other possible identifying features.
“He is wearing a mask.” You say, peering down at the picture.
“He’s hiding his face.” Lloyd clarifies before banging out a few words into the computer's search engine, pulling up a street festival that happened two weeks ago and swiveling the computer screen around so everyone could see it, “And it's a new purchase.”
Staring back at them was a picture of downtown Ninjago filled with people, food stalls and other vendors lining the sidewalks as people milled about. Half the people walking the street were wearing the same exact lion mask as their killer, now in vivid technicolor. You could see the stalls selling them- masks lined wall to wall. It seemed everyone was buying them. It wouldn't have looked out of place at all for the murderer to buy it for himself and squirrel it away for his late night acts.
“He killed the Mechanics goons because they saw his face. He doesn’t want witnesses.” Nya connects, “Aimi was only spared because he has a way to kill anonymously.”
“And with a virtually untraceable origin. That mask is everywhere, now.” Jay continued with a frown.
“It’s not a total dead end. We can still talk to the stall owners, maybe see if they noticed anyone strange buying from them.” He navigates to the festival's website, opening up the vendor list.
There are twelve souvenir stalls in total, and five of them are solely dedicated to masks.
You make a surprised noise in the back of your throat, “Saori Sato. I recognize that name. I believe I taught her son when we were working at the school.” You comment, “I have a rapport with her, I should be able to get her to speak with me easily.”
Lloyd accepts your lie with a nod, “The rest of us will work on the others, then. Hopefully we’ll have some luck.”
You don’t go to see Saori Sato. You sit on the rooftop of her apartment complex and meditate. You try to meditate. There’s a peace that’s absent in you, now, that doesn’t let your mind slip into calm like it used to be able to. There’s always a buzzing under your skin, in your wires.
You brought your sword, the one with the red blade.
You sharpen it until your mind stops racing. It’s like a razor blade now, and you imagine the sting it would cause as you run your metal fingers up the sharp side. You can perfectly imagine how blood would drip down it, now. You go home.
Everyone comes up empty, of course, because Saori Sato sold that mask, and you didn’t speak to her.
---
“You seem unphased with the murders.” You say to Lloyd, after the others have gone to bed and it’s just the two of you up, pouring over the case files. When Lloyd goes to bed, so will you.
He shrugs and sips at his coffee- filled to the brim with cream and sugar, “Darkleys wasn’t just about ruling the world in the big picture. They taught us the small stuff too, including desensitizing us to death.”
There’s nothing to say to that, so you don’t respond. You go back to looking over the papers again, pretending to search for an angle they hadn’t considered yet.
“You want to know something funny?” He says with a little laugh, staring down at the Mechanics' torn up body.
“What is it?” You ask.
A darkness settles over the room, thick and viscous. It seems to flood your mouth and fill your chest. Lloyd looks at you with bright eyes that pin you in place, “I checked your roster. I went through all the kids you taught at the school- and I didn’t find any Satos in the class.” he says with a lopsided smile, eyes burning your skin, assessing, searching for something, “Isn’t that weird?”
Your coolant has turned to ice in your limbs and your body feels numb, “Not at all,” You say cooly, “Sato is her maiden name. Her son has his fathers last name, Maeda.”
He finds something in your expression and- his shoulder slump, “Oh,” He says, blinking. “FSM, i’m sorry- I just-”
“It is alright, Lloyd.” You say graciously, “This has been stressful for us all, and you haven't been sleeping. Perhaps you should get some rest.” rising from your chair, you go to his side and help him to his feet. He allows you to walk him back to his room.
“Let’s start fresh tomorrow.”
“That sounds good.” Lloyd allows with an exhausted yawn. He disappears into his room.
---
Everything hurts.
Your eyes are blurred and blocked by another pop up- WARNING! WARNING! DAMAGE- you dismiss the banner as quickly as it arrives, but that doesn’t stop you from miscounting a step and slamming into the stone staircase, all your weight cracking down on the pointed edges. You scramble to hold onto the steps with your working arm before you can go tumbling back down to the bottom, taking a few breaths that you don’t need to take to help center yourself.
Clambering back to your feet, you check you haven't splattered coolant or oil on the stairwell before you continue up. Clean.
Reaching the monastery, you avoid the main gate. Instead, you shimmy up the courtyard wall and slink silently across the roof until you’re standing above your room. It’s easier with two hands, but you manage to swing yourself off the roof by the tiles and onto the window ledge, barely finessing your way inside without causing a commotion or accidentally falling off the cliff face. You don’t collapse no matter how badly you want to.
First things first- you pry up the loose floorboard under your nightstand and stuff the sword and mask inside, sliding the stand on top of the hiding place. You strip the bloody clothes off and grit your teeth as you peel it away from the mess of your left arm, refusing to scream. Not even allowing a whimper. You’ve had worse- this- this is nothing. Loose pants, loose shirt- long sleeve, of course, just in case anyone was up late getting a glass of water.
It’s late enough that even Jay should be asleep, and the empty garage confirms it.
It takes you two hours to knit the delicate machinery in your arm back together, and another hour fitting a new plate cover so nothing would seem amiss. You take the ravaged pieces of your arm up stairs and pack it under your nightstand too, so there’s no chance of evidence possibly being found.
You collapse now, face first on the bed, and not three hours after that you’re shaken awake.
Nya looks grim, “There’s been another murder.”
In your exhausted, near delirious state, you barely manage to catch yourself before you say I Know.
---
It’s cold this time of year, and it shows. The others are bundled up against the incoming chill of the season, coats and scarves worn on top of their ninja suits. You’re wearing a sweater too, but there’s a cold in you that will never be warm. You’re all behind Laughys Karaoke bar deep in the alley while the police guard the mouth of it, refusing to let reporters or curious civilians get a look.
There’s a detective with you, hanging back and allowing you all to examine the scene.
“Who is this guy?” Cole eventually asks, resisting the urge to nudge his face into view.
The detective steps forward, “His name is Killow. Ninjago PD have had their eye on him for a while- he’s been arrested for petty crimes in the past, but from the intel they’d begun to gather he’d joined an up and coming gang and had climbed pretty high in the ranks. They called him the Big Man.”
‘Big” was an understatement. The man was a brick house, every muscle worked until it bulged. It seems his gym habits had helped a little, even if the end result was still the same.
Lloyd examines his throat, “The first cut didn’t go deep enough.” He comments. There's blood splattered all over the alley, obvious signs of a struggle. Trash was everywhere, torn open bags and the big blue dumpster was dented from Killow slamming the assailant into the metal, more chipped bricks and dented cans revealed just how close Killow had come to walking away from this attempt on his life.
That same dumpster with the largest dent was where Killow had dug his fingers into the murderer's arm and torn through it, spraying metal and wiring across the ground with barely a flick of his wrist. No one knew that but you, and you didn’t share it. The area had been scrupulously cleaned.
“He got him.” Kai commented, “He hurt him pretty bad.”
“How do you know that?” Nya questioned.
Kai gestures to his hands, “Look at his nails. He scratched him, and no one is walking away from that unscathed.” Killows nails were broken and bleeding, torn and snapped off nearly at the cuticle with how hard he’d fought.
“It didn’t help him enough,” Lloyd sighs, standing up, “The second cut was vertical, sliced right through the artery from cheek to chest. He bled out."
“Poor guy.” Jay commented, slowly getting used to the sight of death as he frowned down at the man.
They didn’t know who he was, or what gang he was in- if they did, they’d understand why he had to be put down. The Sons of Garmadon was new and already it was strong, the ranks thick with people who didn’t care about harming others if it furthered their own goals. They were excellent at keeping a low profile while they gained power. It doesn’t escape your notice that the detective avoided naming the gang he was part of. Killow was a bigger cog in that machine, but he wasn’t the only leader the gang members looked to. Your research and surveillance had revealed three of the four ringleaders to you- Killow, Ultraviolet, and, a man you had never seen but had heard referenced several times, Mr. E. They reported to the highest ranking member of the gang, the Quiet One. All you knew about her was that she was a woman.
You stare down at his body and feel no sympathy.
---
“Is there a reason you don’t want me in your head?” Pixal asks bluntly one day, once you’ve gone to visit her at Borg Tower.
Once you’d gotten back to Ninjago City proper, you’d dropped her off with her father with every intention of picking her up later. She’d offered to stick around in your mind for a while, and you’d been happy at the idea- but then Master Wu gave you that sword, and things got more complicated. She hadn’t brought it up for the past few months, but each time you left her without a hint of bringing her along, she had certainly noticed. Now it was her breaking point. She stopped you in the doorway with her words, on your way out.
Your heart had turned numb the moment you took the sword from Wu. In another life, you could have loved her like she deserved.
“My feelings for you…” You turn back to the room, to the screen she's projected her image to so she can look you in the eyes, “…Have changed.” you finish hollowly.
She blinks. She’s perfectly still, “I see.”
“Thank you.” You say softly, “For everything.”
There’s a pause as she studies you, “Is this the end? Will you no longer come to see me?”
The part of you that wants her in your life twinges in pain, the first emotion you’d felt in days, “I believe that is for the best.”
You won’t take her down this path with you.
“Goodbye, Pixal.”
“I will respect your wishes,” She folds her hands in front of her, the perfect picture of poise, “Goodbye, Zane.”
---
Humans are so fragile. Ultraviolet liked to pretend she was tough, like she could take hits others couldn’t- but when it came down to it, her throat sliced just as easily as any others. Her hands were coated in her own blood from where she’s grabbed at her throat, but it was too late, and the slice was too technically perfect. Her knees had hit the ground first and she’d tried to twist, searching for something, eyes wild and mouth gurgling with words that couldn’t form around the blood in her mouth. She fell sideways, skin turning even paler than it already was, and then everything had stopped. The sprinkling rain washed the blood off her lips and diluted the river flowing from her neck. She almost looked like she was sleeping.
You stand over her motionlessly.
“Hey!” A voice cracks across the cool night air, and you turn to the side. You’re on the sidewalk in front of a motorcycle store that Ultraviolet had been intending on robbing, in plain sight. Across the street, up the road, is Nya. She’s not dressed in her ninja suit and her hair is down loose, the wet jeans and soaked hair hindering her sprint as she tears down the road to get to you.
You’re moving before you can think, clambering up the front of the store and up to the roof in record time, purposefully doing something that would be nearly impossible in skinny jeans to deter her. You don’t hesitate to race across the roof and leap to the next, jumping down the fire escape to the next alley and slipping through a thin corridor between two buildings. The sounds of the chase fade to nothing as you outpace her, weaving through back alleys and neighborhoods you’d become intimately familiar with that she didn’t know. After ten more minutes of running, you spin around and head straight for the monastery.
Nya wasn’t expecting to see you, or be witness to the next murder- it was raining- she wouldn't have her phone. That’s your only salvation. She didn’t have her phone.
You take all the shortcuts you know, running until your screen flashes with warnings. You recover from any stumbles in a millisecond. You get home in record time, basically throwing yourself into your room and ripping the mask off. Flinging your mask and sword into your closet and stripping off your wet turtleneck, you close the closet door and dive into bed. The blankets get yanked up to your shoulder and you close your eyes, feigning sleep, and wait.
Android stamina will always outpace humans. You beat Nya home.
She shouts for you all the moment she's through the door, throwing open your doors in her haste to get you up and mobilize after the murderer. She opens your door to you sitting up in bed, clearly woken up from sleep and giving her an openly bewildered expression.
You jump out of bed and throw on your ninja suit, joining the others on the porch as you all gear up.
---
You don’t find the murderer. No one else does either.
Kai looks at you, once you’re all home and exhausted after the all night search. Everyone is soaked and ready to go to bed, dispersing with low spirits and tired eyes. Kai stands in the entryway, dripping wet, and he really looks at you.
You give him a questioning eyebrow raise.
“You know you can tell me anything, right?” He says finally, “I won’t judge you.”
“…I know.”
He stares at you, eyes smoldering. He’s in pain. “There’s blood on your collar.” He says finally.
You look down at it- it’s barely noticeable. There must have been a few droplets on your chin that ran down with the water. If you’d been wearing black, he wouldn’t have been able to tell. Your ninja suit is white.
“It’s oil.” You say softly, the patch is just old and watered down enough that you could pass it off for brown.
“Okay.” Kai says. He looks like he’s going to cry.
He looks like he’s afraid of you.
---
Mr.E vanishes after Ultraviolets assassination. You look for him during SoG meetings and you keep an ear out, but he’s nowhere to be seen or heard. The gang is falling apart, half the newer members jumping ship- chances are Mr.E saw the writing on the wall and got out before his neck was next. You could respect that. You might even thank him for it, because if he hadn’t abandoned his post there’s a chance you would have never found out who the quiet one was.
There’s three totally unqualified people at this meeting so far, the members that had ranked directly below the previous three. Their skills were lacking, but their loyalty was rock solid. That was the Quiet Ones main priority after Mr.E’s Irish goodbye. The three were clearly nervous even though they were trying to appear tough- the taller girl even attempting to do tricks with her butterfly knife to appear cool and intimidating. It might have worked if she didn’t drop the blade every other trick.
A door opens and shuts in the silence, the black night outside offering no clue to the newcomers identity. She doesn’t leave them in suspense, though, striding into the light with a stormy expression. She starts talking immediately, taking their names and offering her own.
“You may call me the Quiet One.” She instructs them.
“You’re really the quiet one?” The man says, eyebrows raised in surprise.
“Yes. Is there an issue?”
“None at all, ma’am.” He responds gruffly, dipping his head.
That’s all the confirmation you need. You slide to the edge of the exposed beam you’re sitting on, swinging down by your arms before you drop straight into the middle of the group. Your feet slam onto the table and the things tilts- you hadn’t anticipated it, so you end up going left instead of right. Instead of the single clean kill you came here for, you’re thrown into butterfly knife girl and the scene becomes a lot more grisly. Your stumble gave them time to process your intentions- you relied on surprise. Now this would get messy.
Knife girl stabs you in the chest. Her knife gets stuck. While she’s trying to rip it out of your skin, you sever her hands at the wrist. She screams and doesn’t stop.
The bigger male lunges for your throat and you hold your sword up so it plunges straight through his chest, his own momentum forcing it through muscle and the delicate capillaries in his lungs. That doesn’t stop him and his hands are on your throat- it doesn't do anything, of course, because you don't need to breathe. He keeps squeezing, and your neck strains. He could pop your head off if he tried. Your sword is buried in his chest and you can’t back up enough to get the space to pull it out.
You reach up and fumble for the butterfly knife, ripping it out of your chest and whipping it around to slam it directly into his ear. He howls in pain, releasing your neck to scrabble at his head before you use the knife to slice him from ear to collarbone. He collapses and the sword slides out of his body.
Knife girl has gone silent, bleeding to death from the ruined arteries in her wrists.
The other woman throws something the moment her shot is clear and on reflex you catch it. It’s a throwing knife and dangling from the handle-
You dart it back at her before you can finish understanding the word bomb. She’s not expecting such fast reflexes, so she’s not prepared for the knife to bury itself in her chest.
Then it explodes.
You spin around, preparing for the Quiet One to attack you next-
The door is open, and she’s gone.
The worst part about all of this is that you didn’t recognize her. Running her face through your facial recognition software came up empty too- so did cross checking any and every news outlet, hoping to see her face maybe in the back of a crowd. Nothing.
That could have been your only chance.
---
“I have been in your shoes before, I know this is hard. You must be prepared to do everything to protect them.” Master Wu had said after you had vomited up your dinner the night of the Mechanics murder, “This path will cost you everything.”
“Everything?” You questioned, staring down at the toilet bowl.
“But they will be safe.” He reassures you, gripping your shoulder tightly.
---
You don’t let the two parts of your life overlap. You don’t. The nights you go out, you are a serial killer. The next morning you are Zane, elemental master of ice, the titanium ninja. Zane is not tainted by all the blood and death and gore. Zane is not a murderer. You don’t ever use your sword as Zane, and you never use your shurikens as the serial killer. Everything would fall apart if you couldn’t keep them separate.
As you stand in the palace and the emperor introduces his daughter, your hands twitch for your sword the moment she opens her mouth. The face paint. You weren't able to discover her identity because of the face paint. Caked on so thick that her bare face looked like a completely different woman-
The emperor's daughter Harumi, and the Quiet One. Two parts of her life that aren't supposed to overlap.
“-Zane: The cold and calculating android.” She names you sweetly, voice honey thick. There’s a manic, wild edge to her eyes that the face paint can’t hide.
It makes sense. Her three most trusted advisors were murdered or abandoned her, and their replacements were slaughtered immediately after. The Sons of Garmadon had begun to collapse, fractioning off into smaller gangs with their own leaders. The main faction still had a substantial number of die-hard loyalists who were growing more and more extreme by the day. Robbery, assault, murder- they were wreaking havoc on Ninjago. They even managed to steal the Oni Mask of Vengeance. Now, her eyes slid over to Lloyd and locked onto him. She slipped a new mask on, one that was shy and flirtatious. The Quiet One wanted Lloyd wrapped around her finger.
But Harumi and the Quiet One weren’t supposed to exist at the same time.
Neither were Zane and the serial killer.
Inevitably, though, two worlds will always collide. Maybe the two parts of her and you were never supposed to live separate forever. Maybe you shouldn’t have taken that sword from Wu. Maybe you should have brought it with you so that Zane didn’t have to use his shuriken.
“Thank you for this opportunity,” You say clearly into the cold, cold room. Or maybe you’re the cold one, “I will not let it pass me by.”
There’s blood on your shuriken.
You collect your mask and your sword from underneath the floorboards in your bedroom and run.
They’re safe. They’ll always be safe.

NINJAGO DRS2P1 POSSIBLE SPOILERS
Theories and predictions:
I think Forbidden Five might have been the non-dragon students Rontu and Egalt trained, but went evil instead and the two had to stop them before they destroyed the realms.
Zane's going to have an arc or something about being a nindroid and it involves his personhood. Maybe Bonzle will be there too.
Sora being the one that actually ended the ritual and hiding the truth is going to have consequences.
Jordana's been affected by magic/Ras' master/ smth else
Jaya reunion is going to be interesting considering Nya's "the love of my life wouldn't forget me" line
Jay is hiding his powers and there is a reason for that(it's either something horrible or paperwork)
Cole might feel guilty about what happened to Bonzle
The team will still not remember Jordana's name(they learned Cinder's after one encounter, but still not her name)
Could Wu(and by extension Garmadon) be spells turned person like Bonzle? That'd explain Wu's deal in DR and he just doesn't have enough energy to turn into a physical being
That yellow spell with the Sorceress (Gandalara?) could very well be him, considering it showed Jay his image in a ninja gi

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween everybody! I'll be honest, its been a crazy month. I thought I would have plenty of time to get my Halloween redraw done this year, but I had to really crunch at the end to get it done. The shading isn't really up to my usual standards, so probably when I have more time I'll go back and do a proper shading pass.
I had a lot of fun doing different group combinations than the previous years, mostly breaking up the couples and letting them do friend or parent child costumes instead. And I finally got to do what I wanted to do last year, add in Zoey, Levin, and Malachi! They're arguably more important characters than Cadenza, hence why she got the axe this year (I still love her but she's not exactly plot central and I also had no ideas for her costume). So without further ado, here's my 2023 redraw!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Individuals and costume explanations under the cut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
KC: Emily (Stardew Valley) Based off Lizard Leigh's cosplay on YouTube.
Dante and Naoko: John Marston (RDR) and Link (BOTW). Sort of representing each generation's style of open-world gaming.
Lucinda: Megara (Hercules)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Levin and Malachi: Nightwing and Damien Wayne (Son of Batman)
Aphra, Garroth, and Laurance: Yellow guy, red guy, and duck (DHMIS show)
Zoey: Dani (Midsommar). I like the idea that she just saw the outfits and thought they were pretty, full on doesn't realize its a horror movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zane: Jonathan Sims (The Magnus Archives)
Travis and Katelyn: Anne Boleyn and Catherine Parr (SIX)
Nicole and Dmitri: Cassandra and Casey Jones (Rottmnt)

Yu-Gi-Oh GX Characters ranked on how likely I would be to beat them in a physical fight
K some ground rules: Fisticuffs only and my personal feelings about the character do not matter.
let’s go
Blair Flanagan— listen most people would not kick a child but I would. I would be able to punt Blair into the fucking sun. what’s she gonna do? she’s tiny and she literally fights with love. kill em with kindness? wrong, that second grader is about to feel my wrath.
Zane Truesdale— I may be disabled but God hasn’t slapped my ass into a wheelchair yet. I’d knock him out of his chair and beat him over the head with it. i am allowed to do so because I am disabled. I will be taking no criticism at this time. on the other hand I think wheelchair jousting would be fucking hilarious (and I’d still beat Zane at it) but this is fisticuffs only. one good hit to the face and he’s down. maybe i get lucky and punch him hard enough in the chest that I straight up kill him.
Alexis Rhodes— I definitely could beat her in a fight. She probably bites but I bite harder. I’ve been wearing my retainer like a good kid and my teeth are straight and poised and ready to attack.
Dr. Crowler— We’ve seen Crowler in a skintight wetsuit multiple times and there is no muscle there. I will full nelson him into giving me an A. Also he has a major disadvantage that is Long Hair. yankin time.
Syrus Truesdale— I know I said I could beat up Blair because she’s tiny but Syrus could hold his own against me. He is a feral little fuck and contains a lot of repressed childhood anger that he would def let out in a physical fight. I’d still win, but barely.
Atticus Rhodes— canonically ripped but less ripped than everyone else on this list. one good kick to the nuts and it’d be over. he’s very sensitive. you wanna fight fair, atty? too bad it’s testicular torsion time
Chazz Princeton— not ripped but have you seen him beat the shit outta Ojama Yellow? He’d kick the stuffing out of me. also definitely tapping into his trauma. anyway he’d win because he’s a feral sewer rat that thrives off of yellow’s screams for mercy.
Jaden Yuki— this is where it got tough. Jaden is canonically a buff guy (pushed car up hill) but he’s also guilt ridden from literally killing his friends once. I still think he’d win because there is no way I am getting that slippery autistic lizard motherfucker in any kind of hold.
Adrian Gecko— okay now we’re getting into the real problems. everyone from here on out has canonical bulging ass muscles that I physically could not hold up against. sorry what was I saying? oh right adrian. he’d win. fuck you adrian. moving on.
Jesse Anderson— I’d have a maybe 10% chance of winning if I got close enough to purple nurple his ass. I’d try a nut kick but Jesse is way smarter than atticus and would show up wearing a cup. also buff as hell.
Jim Cook— I’d only have a chance because this is fisticuffs only and Shirley is not allowed in the fight. also Jim has a six-pack. he is 100% muscle and would whoop my ass with zero goddamn mercy.
Axel Brodie— can canonically hang upside down and still think clearly. I am not getting that man to pass out in any kind of chokehold. he would simple gaston-style flex and send me flying.
Tyranno Hassleberry— he got dino dna. I’d quit before we started.

My first fic for @badthingshappenbingo !
Tumblr media
Fandom: Ninjago
Trope: I Have Your Loved One
Also available on AO3!
You look like you've just seen a ghost
It was a boring day and the ninja were having a break, so Kai was watching TV. He didn't really focus on the words coming from the old box in front of him, just recalling them being about the latest scores for each sport, something the red-clad teenager didn't have much interest in. It was only when the yellow text reading 'BREAKING NEWS' came on screen did he finally break out of his trance and start paying attention. He knew what this was about.
"The ninja claim victory once again after the defeat of Morro and The Preeminent, the former who had Lloyd Garmadon under his possession for two weeks. Additionally, Nya, Fire Ninja Kai's sister, has joined the ninja team. None of the six teenagers accepted our request for an interview at the moment..."
Kai looked around the room. Cole was on his phone, and Nya and Jay had decided to go out somewhere to forget the events of the last few weeks. He decided to look for Zane and Lloyd. He was almost certain they were together.
Ever since Lloyd was free of Morro's possession, he had obvious trauma. He woke up screaming every night, having another panic attack due to a nightmare. The blond found it mortifying, so he often locked himself in whichever room was currently empty, despite the others' insistence that he should talk to them about his feelings. Knowing Zane, however, he was probably trying to get Lloyd to talk to him.
But Kai had another idea on helping Lloyd forget about Morro and the ghost's actions. He faintly heard Zane and Lloyd's voices, which led him to their room.
"I'm fine, Zane! Really! Morro is gone, and I know that!"
"Lloyd, you do not need to--"
"Hey guys!" Kai's voice was very loud and cheerful as if nothing significantly bad had happened recently. Zane side-eyed him while Lloyd tried to fake a smile.
"Hey, Kai! How's it going?" Kai pretended not to notice that the Green Ninja's voice was trembling as he spoke.
"I feel amazing! You know why? I booked us tickets to the amusement park in the city! Do you guys wanna go?"
"I'll come!" Lloyd looked genuinely happy. Zane, on the other hand, understood that this was just to cheer up the blond so he opted out.
"I'll be busy, so no thank you. Have fun!"
...
Kai didn't even ask his remaining teammates if they wanted to come or not. It was certainly only to cheer Lloyd; the master of fire wanted some alone time with him.
They went on a couple of roller coasters which they decided were too tame so they hunted the park for the scariest ride. Eventually they found it. It had a black railing which ascended about a hundred metres then dropped underground at a very high speed, before coming out again and reaching the starting point, repeating this five times.
As they waited in line, Kai looked at his brother and froze for a moment. What if the ride was a bit too scary? What if Lloyd got a panic attack while they were a hundred metres high?
"Lloyd, are you sure you're up for this?" The blond frowned at the question.
"Of course, why wouldn't I be?"
"I thought maybe after Morro..."
"Geez, Kai, I'm not afraid of Morro! He's gone! Forever! Why is everyone worrying about me?"
The brunette thought of responding to that with ‘I don't know, maybe because you've already had twenty panic attacks since your possession’, but decided not to. He didn't want to ruin the fun. "Okay. I'm sorry." His heart became heavy when Lloyd simply kept silent and looked away in response.
Neither of them spoke to each other until they were seated on the ride. Kai wasn't scared. He lived in a flying ship. And while Lloyd did too, he hated the fact that he looked a bit nervous. Even if the height didn't scare them the speed was quite extreme. But it was too late to get off. The ride started moving slowly.
As they got higher and higher, Kai was starting to get scared too. The Destiny's Bounty wasn't like this. It didn't slowly rise and fall at an unbelievable speed. And there were walls on all four sides. On this ride, the only thing that kept everyone from falling off were some bars that hugged their waists. Kai could've sworn his was shaking.
They finally reached the top. Kai knew what was about to happen. He took a deep breath in the split second the ride wasn't moving in, when Lloyd suddenly grabbed his hand.
"I'm scared--"
The ride started falling. Kai realised something a bit too late. Due to the speed of the ride, there was a lot of air hitting him and Lloyd. Like wind. Lloyd didn't release his grip on Kai's hand even when the ride went underground. In fact, it got tighter.
"Kai, I'm so sorry, I need to get off, I can't do this four more times..." The brunette, though, was trying to look at their surroundings but it was too dark. A voice boomed on the speakers around the ride.
"Welcome to the haunted house! Nobody who enters here leaves alive!" The other riders were cheering for what was about to come. Kai would've been too, if it wasn't for the boy sitting next to him who just had a terrible experience with a ghost.
Speaking of ghosts, the ride continued moving in darkness until their only source of illumination was a very realistic hologram in front of the ride. A hologram of a ghost.
Lloyd couldn't take it anymore. "KAI!" he screeched. Kai didn't know what to do. He felt so sick. To make things even worse, the ride started its second round. Which involved going a hundred metres high again and going down at a high speed. Kai squeezed his brother's hand.
"Lloyd, I'm here. Nothing will happen to you, I promise. If someone tries to attack you, they have to get through me first." He shut his eyes, wanting to see no more of this horrific ride.
The ride reached its peak before descending once more. This time, for some weird reason, the ride seemed to be moving even faster than in the last round. They were almost at the bottom, just about fifteen metres high, when Kai felt something around his waist loosening. He opened his eyes to see the bar was starting to move a little bit. He immediately grabbed his bar with one hand and grabbed Lloyd's with the other. He didn't even have time to warn the blond on what was happening.
Suddenly, there was a crash. And then it all went black.
...
The next thing Kai knew was that he was still on the ride. He turned to his right to see that Lloyd wasn't there.
"Lloyd!" Kai scrambled out of his seat, when a man in a uniform stopped him.
"Hey, hey, calm down, we need to check you for injuries to make sure you don't have any fatal--"
"I don't care about my health," Kai grit his teeth. "My brother was on this ride and I can't find him. And why weren't we warned about this whole 'haunted house' crap? We plummeted into the darkness to see a ghost pop up in front of us."
"Whoa, what haunted house are you talking about? The ride always manages to get out of the darkness within five seconds. Did you hit your head?"
Kai quickly grabbed the nearest rider by the shoulder. "Hey, you! W as there a hologram of a ghost when we went underground?"
"Yeah!" He replied. "It was funny." The former passenger began to laugh. He must've hit his head pretty hard.
"Alright," said the worker. "The ride must have been tampered with. The police will look into this and look for your missing friend. You will be refunded and all hospital bills will be paid by us."
"I just told you, I don't care about my health! I. Want. My. Brother." Kai didn't even wait for a response. He just ran off to look for Lloyd.
Around the ride, outside the ride; there wasn't even a trace of Lloyd anywhere. It was almost as if he had never came.
Kai was certain that Lloyd had been kidnapped. After searching through the whole park and having no sight of the Green Ninja, he went back to where the ride crashed to see if the workers had better luck.
When he got there, it was empty, and just as dark as it was when the ride was functioning. This time, though, Kai turned on his phone's torch. He walked forward to the exact place where the hologram came from. He noticed that there were no machines, and the only light bulb was turned off and incapable of creating such a sight.
Wait-- was it possible that it was a real ghost?
And what if that ghost caught--
"Hello, fire ninja." Kai heard a voice that sounded somewhat familiar, but couldn't exactly recognise. He turned around and found no source.
"I'm over here!" Kai turned around.
"No, here!" Kai thought the voice was playing tricks on him again but this time he was met with the sight of Lloyd unconscious, hands bound together with vengestone handcuffs and blood coming out from different parts of his body, including a trickle from his mouth. Oddly, he was floating in the air.
Kai ran towards his brother and checked if the source of the voice was still there. "Who are you? And what have you done to Lloyd?"
"What happened? Can't you recognise my voice?" A ghost appeared out of thin air, revealing that he was in fact holding Lloyd this whole time. But Kai was in denial at who it was.
It was Garmadon. Not Sensei Garmadon, Lord Garmadon. The one Lloyd had fought in the final battle.
"Surprised to see me?" Garmadon grinned evilly.
"Garmadon! How'd you--" Kai was lost for words.
"Long story short, Kai. When Lloyd defeated me a few years back, the evil part of me died. Hence, I became a ghost. I didn't engage in Morro's activities. I stayed hidden until he was defeated so no one would suspect I was here. To be honest, you're the first person I've told about my existence."
"You have two choices," he continued. "One: You and the remaining ninja work for me. Two: You don't. And I'll torture Lloyd for days before mercifully killing him."
Kai was lost for words. Lloyd was already suffering from trauma from his possession and his father's death. On the other hand, he couldn't just become Garmadon's slave. He would tell him to do horrible things, leading to him ruling over Ninjago.
"You take too much time. I'll tell you what. I'll take Lloyd for now, and you can decide by next week. I'll come to your flying ship. Just a reminder, Lloyd isn't safe with me."
"Wait!" Kai finally spoke.
"Sorry, but I don't have all day!" With that, Garmadon floated out of the basement, taking Lloyd with him.
Kai had to inform the others. Lloyd would practically be in hell when he woke up.
He just had to hope the Green Ninja would pull through.

tw, cannibalism, self-mutilation, drugs/drug-induced hallucinations/violence, mutually-toxic relationship (Zanus), and all associated themes.
i was gonna do a whole drawing whilst i talk about YJ-au (in long, an au for Lr which is based off of the basic premis of yellow jackets: What if a bunch of teenagers got Lord of the Flies'd and ate eachother) Zanus but
alas
my laptop is being slow, so nevermind.
I'll just talk about it in a basic text post, which is boring and uninspired (when i do it, i love when y'all do it).
QUICK DISCLAIMER: i do not romanticise/glorify any of this behaviour. they're incredibly toxic, and relationships like this are BAD. but i'll write it anyways, because Media Literacy may be dead, but my desire to explore dark themes is immortal.
Zanus were friends, though not romantic, prior to the crash that landed them in the mountains. Distant, maybe, but Zane always had a holier-than-thou attitude towards anyone, so his distance from Janus was typical, less personal. After the crash, due to the amount of characters involved, they all sected off into little groups.
The Jury was a school council type thing, and though they weren't Zane's first choice for survival buddies (his first choice being the group of assholes who ate shrooms, had a bad trip, and ate eachother), he stuck with them bc they were better than his third and fourth choices.
Due to general life stuff, he began actually having to interact with the rest of the Jury, and he found that Janus was very quick to agree with him, and so hung out with Janus the most. and, of course, Janus was like obsessed with him, but Zane wasn't really interested in them like that.
and then Zane get's his eyeball obliterated by Garroth by accident, and as an act of solidarity, Janus takes a knife to their own eye (the opposite eye, of course, so they have one full set of eyes between them). And Zane goes 'ohhhh fuck i want them so bad' and now they're dating, and they're toxic, and they suck <3
and get worse from there.
i have more to say about Zane, but i think setting the baseline that his idea of peak game is self-mutilation in honour of himself is probably the best way to establish who Zane is in this au.

Summary: Morro takes a bird home.
Warnings: Injured bird (not dead dove content, there is literally just an injured bird)
Prompt: "Put that down."
Extra: Again, generic "Revived Morro Lives w/ the Ninja" AU, plus my headcanon that Morro loves literally any animal that flies. Birds, bats, flying squirrels, flying bugs, all of them. Morro's gray themed because I said so. Purple is Nelson's color, dark green feels like it's poking fun at the fact that he could never be the Green Ninja, and yellow just doesn't seem like his color. So, gray! Also I'm a they/he Morro truther because why not.
THUNK!
The Ninja snapped to where the sound originated from, which happened to be a window of the café they were at. Kai stood.
"I'm gonna go check that out," the wind elemental said as they exited, the doorbell chiming.
Through the glass, they saw as Morro scanned the surroundings. It was a rather calm day in this part of Ninjago City, only five pedestrians in sight with a couple of cars driving by.
The gray themed ninja looked down to the ground, most likely seeing the cause of the noise, then lowered themself. His head popped back up with their hand supporting something.
The dark haired person reentered the shop and gently sat down in their chair. The Ninja peered at what he held; a bird. An unconscious bird.
"I think we should go back to the monastery," Zane said after he scanned the bird, "it is injured."
The Ninja swiftly left after Cole paid and left a generous tip.
Sensei Wu walked in as Kai had finished splinting the bird's wing, as one had fractured when it crashed. The bird was now active and awake, tweeting happily in Morro's palm.
"Put that down," the bearded man demanded, "you all know there are no pets allowed."
"Sensei, this is not a pet, it's an injured bird. We are simply taking care of it until it can fly again," Lloyd explained.
"Besides, it's a wild animal. It'll just poop all over the place! Why would we wanna keep it?" Nya piped in.
Morro kept silent.
"I was not talking to you all, I was talking to Morro," Wu clarified, looking directly at his adopted son.
"...but-" Morro started.
"No pets, Morro. You remember what happened with Maple."
"She wasn't that bad."
"She pooped in my teapot!"
"You trapped her inside of it, what'd you expect her to do?"
The sensei pinched the bridge of his nose.
"Regardless, there was still Sierra-"
"Just because she bit, doesn't mean she was bad-"
"Domino-"
"He only broke three plates-"
"Indigo-"
"That was Ray's fault, and you know it-"
"Richard-"
"We don't talk about Richard the Raccoon."
Wu set a wrinkly hand on Morro's shoulder. "We cannot keep this bird, okay?"
Morro held up the bird, who just puffed up its feathers. "How could you tell Choco we can't keep her?" His voice cracked and bottom lip quivered.
Wu pursed his lips, forehead wrinkles becoming more prominent as his eyebrows furrowed.
The bird twittered at him.
"Oh, fine. You win. You can keep Choco." Wu broke. Morro immediately smiled, revealing the near teary eyed facade was just that, a facade.
"But," the bearded man looked directly at his first student, "One single mistake and she will be set free."
Morro nodded seriously before leaving the room, muttering about housing.
The next day, a bird house hung proudly on Morro's wall with ledges that traveled around the entirety of his room.

-I absolutely love vintage vids, just something so interesting about them to me! I love animes from the 90s-2010s most, but my most FAVORITE anime genre is magical girls!
-My first magical series was probably Glitter Force (SMILE PRECURE DUB YALL), but then Sailor Moon caught my eye and it is one my favs to this day! I finished Tokyo Mew Mew first though!
-Fav character is Pop Harukaze! She doesn’t get much of a role in Ojamajo Doremi as a Ojamajo, but something about her personality or something.. I am just living for it!
-Some other favs.. and yes I have a long list bc my autistic brain can’t choose favorites when they are so unique.. are Tsubomi/Cure Blossom, Komugi/Cure Wonderful, Gelatin (BFDI+), Flower (BFDI+), Two (BFB), Firey (BFDI+), X (BFB), (Teardrop (BFDI+), Four (BFB), Aiko (Ojamajo Doremi), Onpu (Ojamajo Doremi), Chibi Chibi/Sailor Chibi Chibi, Saki/Cure Bloom, Minako/Sailor Venus, Erika/Cure Marine, Nagisa/Cure Black, Bu-Ling/Mew Pudding, Yayoi/Cure Peace, Love/Cure Peach, Hana-chan (Ojamajo Doremi), Pollun/Porun (Precure), Jewlulu (Pripara), Tweek (you know what), Oz (Canimals), Muffin (Bluey), Zane (Mystreet/Aphmau), Garroth (Mystreet/Aphmau), Kim (Mystreet/Aphmau), Ian (Mystreet/Aphmau) and Noi (MID/Aphmau)!
-Fav color is lavender and pastel yellow
-Im scatterbrained at times, but can try remembering anything you say! Im clumsy and shy! <3
-“Do you have games on your phone” YES BUT LEAVE THEM IF ITS MY PHONE OR IPAD XDDD, especially my dear Animal Jam >:3
-I don’t really prefer to talk on email or text.. just tell me something on here or a social media platform like Youtube or Deviantart! I still use Gold the Ostrich as the user!
-Fav thing to say is “HOR HOR HOR HOR HOR” all i freaking know about fnaf is the movie with unnecessary add on lore 💀
-I don’t mind cussing, it’s just not a full on “lifestyle” for me
Now some rules! <3
-Everyone is allowed on my blog, it is mostly a tickle/random blog, but it’s quite decent so far!
-If you dislike this blog, please don’t say unnecessary stuff in your blogs, posts in any other media, etc if so. Just try ignoring this blog if possible.
-I can do commissions, especially of the following fandoms, but pls don’t get too upset if I don’t know a certain fandom, sometimes I forget to add a fandom to here.
- I am a minor, 13 in fact! So no sussy requests pleaseeee!! any other tickle requests are okay, even from fandoms I dont know, or your ocs! pls dont be mad if I don’t want to do your request! I will do anything that is sfw and accept lgbtq+ characters aswell!
-Might update this later, but this is good for now! Also this might stay as my only blog due to having no other ideas for blogs at the moment

Canyon moon
When introducing Canyon Moon in the one night only performance harry said was written at Tom (kid harpoon) and Jenny’s house L.A. in January 2018. Jenny in the song is Tom’s wife and Harry dedicated it to her:
youtube
Longing for home and domestic life
The lyrics refer to Jenny and Tom’s settled life with kids as a dream when compared to leaving his beloved to tour:
“Sky never looked so blue So hard to leave it That's what I always do So I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon The world's happy waiting Doors yellow, broken, blue I heard Jenny saying "Go get the kids from school" And I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon I'll be gone too long from you”
Remembering lyrics
Harry talks about sharing love of music and not remember lyrics which reminds us of his temper trap tattoo. After the bridge the song ends with ‘looking back’ because the relationship didn’t survive his journey. :
“I'm going, oh, I'm going I'm going, oh, I'm going home Quick pause in conversation She plays songs I've never heard An old lover's hippie music Pretends not to know the words And I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon”
Dulcimer
To Rolling Stone Harry spoke about the influence of Joni Michell’s Blue for Canyon Moon: “he and Kid Harpoon tracked down Joellen Lapidus, the woman who built Mitchell’s dulcimer for Blue. She not only made one for Harry, she gave him and Kid Harpoon their first dulcimer lesson at her house.”
Between 3-4 March 2012 Taylor Swift wrote "Nothing New" for Red. She'd just learned to play the Appalachian dulcimer because that's what her hero Joni Mitchell played on Blue. Swift penned this song on a flight from Perth using the instrument, inspired by Mitchell's "A Case Of You." Thank you @mynkno
Laurel Canyon, Joni Mitchell
The canyon is likely Laurel Canyon where Joni Mitchell lived while dating Graham Nash. At the height of their fame in the 70’s Joni and Nash had a strong attraction, broke up and wrote many songs about the heartbreak, including Blue.
California has a similar meaning to Canyon Moon. Joni sings of being weary from travelling in Europe after breaking up with Nash, longing for home in California and includes hoping he will take her as she is ‘strung out on another man’ (breaks my heart every time)
Harry owned a Hollywood Hills house near laurel Canyon, from 2016 which was for sale when he wrote this. The song was written at Toms house ‘around the corner’.
TS also owned a house in the area 2012-2018 which he visited before leaving to tour and she sold the year this was written (to buy another in LA).
In his interview with Zane Lowe about the album at 38:45 in Harry talks about his relationship with California changing and it never being home.
Summary
Canyon moon is bittersweet about a relationship with someone who has a shared love of music, harry gives two outcomes:
The reference to Joni and Nash are a couple who are driven to succeed as famous musicians. Passion and leaving LA to tour were challenges and the relationship ended, as happened in the relationship he is looking back on,
The reference to Jenny show a different path, Harry is daydreaming about having stayed in LA and having domestic bliss with someone who shares his love of music.
The song is about what could have been and missing the relationship rather than place.
