I love coming up with silly AUs so much. I'm rotating Merukomu + royal guards university theater group in my head. Logically does it make sense? .................No. But is it fun? Yes.

Hi again! I've had this thought in terms of hxh meta that I personally have not seen discussed, so I'm gonna dump it here for you! There's an underlying theme I've noticed of characters throughout the series being one that lost their other halves. Like, most obvious, Leorio and Kurapika lost their childhood best friends. Melody lost her friend to the devil's music. We see Nobunaga lose Uvogin, and so on. So Killua saving Gon instead of letting him die after CAA seems to be a "breaking the cycle" so to speak, although I'm not sure what that would even mean! Nothing much to say besides those details I've noticed, but I wanted to know if you had thoughts? Or perhaps it's just an interesting background detail that is up in the air in terms of being significant?
Hello, thank you so much for sending an ask again! I've put some thought into this topic as well, so I'm happy you brought this up! How I'm answering this is both somewhat abstract and far-reaching in the series so it's a little difficult to summarize and express simply, but I hope you and others might get some meaning out of it!
I strongly believe that one of HxH's great overarching themes is the transformational power of love and how it grants people second chances in life. In this post I'm referring to love in a broader sense, not just romantic love, as of course many different types of love are portrayed and have deep importance in HxH. We see the theme of transformative love in so many different relationships and instances that it's difficult to even summarize them--a few examples are Gon and Killua, Meruem and Komugi, Meruem and his Royal Guard, Ging and Kite, Killua and Ikalgo, even in less major character pairs like Ging and Razor (Razor: "Ging taught me it took only one person, one person in the entire world who will trust you, to save you.") and Kite and Koala, but that's only scraping the surface. I reblogged a previous wonderful meta that pointed out the domino effect of Killua's act of kindness towards Ikalgo, which ended up changing the ultimate trajectory of humanity's war against the Chimera Ants. This is a great example of this theme in action!
But of course, while meeting and loving someone can transform that person's whole life, so also can losing someone significant. It can set someone on a completely different life track than they would have been on had they not lost them--Kurapika, Leorio, Senritsu, the Phantom Troupe (especially with their flashback in recent chapters), Gon and Kite, Kacho and Fugetsu (though this hasn't played out all the way yet) come to mind, but there are many more throughout the series as well. Not all of the losses that fit into this are someone losing their other half/most important person, but there's a solid enough percentage that it certainly seems to be a trend Togashi is establishing and exploring.
It's difficult to explore one of these themes in depth and with honesty without the other--love happens, loss of loved ones happens, both are deeply transformative, and both can ultimately be placed under the broader umbrella of the transformative power of love. After all, if losing a person causes someone's entire life path to change, chances are they loved them a great deal and the force behind the change that occurs in their life is the love and grief they still feel after the loss.
HxH has many tragic elements and Togashi certainly doesn't shy away from the heart-wrenching and long-lasting results of loss, but I think it's fair to say from the 400 chapters we have so far that HxH's themes are not ultimately tragic and hopeless on this topic by any means. In HxH:
Death is not always insurmountable, i.e., Kite, the Chimera Ants in general
The life path one ends up on after a major loss need not be a tragic one, i.e. Leorio deciding to be a doctor and help children in poverty as a result of losing his friend
Death in itself can be an act of love, i.e. Meruem and Komugi, Netero and humanity
Even if one ends up on a dark path as a result of loss, that doesn't mean they can't be saved by someone else's love for them, i.e., Gon and Killua, this could also end up being the trajectory for Kurapika and Leorio potentially?
With Gon and Killua, their whole relationship is based on them transforming each other and giving each other second chances:
Gon saving Killua simply by not judging him, befriending him, and showing him another life path
Gon retrieving Killua from the Zoldyck family when Killua's resolve broke down because of Illumi
Killua pulling the needle of out of his head out of sheer love for and desire to protect Gon
And of course Killua not allowing Gon to die, simultaneously saving him and transforming Alluka's life.
(And Killua's ability to save and help Alluka is of course, a direct result of the kindness Gon extended to Killua and the love Killua has for Gon.)
There's no way to know for certain what will happen in their future, but I definitely think their relationship has one more transformation in it at least, in the form of a reunion and reconciliation.
So, in summary, I think these themes of someone losing a person who was their other half and how one continues to live after that are another way of exploring the broader theme of what it means to love someone and be transformed by meeting them, which I see as a primary theme of HxH. I also think some of these relationships are intended to be comparisons to or foils of Gon and Killua's relationship in a sense (especially Kurapika and Pairo and Kacho and Fugetsu, but others as well), expanding on the themes of their relationship and how a love that deep affects people, both in beautiful and in deeply painful ways.

Killua/Gon: You are my light. I could cradle you in my loving arms until the earth grows cold. I am going to spin kick you.
Meruem/Komugi: If you weren't such a fascist this could be such a beautiful love story.
Gon/Alluka: We are having so much fun! The trauma is inexorable. I love spending time with you! Sometimes I think about the things we've lost.
Kite/Pitou: Yes I murdered you but in doing so I destroyed the greatest thing I ever held and learned the value of you in retrospect so takesies backsies.
Killua/canary: I trust you with my life. I would give up everything for you. But no I wont go to bruce springstein with you.
Kurapika/Leorio: We fuck in a beat up SUV in a target parking lot at 2 am alot. Its alright but every time our mutual friends gather it is so awkward.
Leorio/Silva Zoldyck: I fucked your dad by accident but it means I win any argument ever so actually this is okay
Leorio/Zepile: Bro... I heard pineapple makes your cum taste better... theres no way... well... there is only one way to be sure... Let me cover my dick in pineapple and then... no. I shant say...
Illumi/Hisoka: Trying to figure out which one is more demented and psychosexually agressive is half of the fun, and the other half is kinky sex.
Kurapika/Hisoka: If you weren't such a bitch I could like you. If you weren't so sexy I could hate you. I will settle for rough sex and mindgames.
Ging/Razor: "Do you ever think two manly men could smooch and touch butts?" "no but now that I have it is all I long for."
Kurapika/Chrollo: Buisiness casual for hate sex. Love hate with anti-social twinks who love books.
Shoot/Knuckle: What! Bro jobs aren't gay? Bro, get over here! I need to give you a straight up gay sloppy sucking to ENSURE its gay this time.
Bisky/Hisoka: Fighting and fucking are 10% the same thing but with careful teamwork I believe we can raise this number
Palm/Mito: Hey. I got your text. Yeah the uhaul is loaded. I'm so sad I didn't get to say it first, but I love you too.

Why do you think Killua was having doubts about whether Gon saw him as a teammate or a friend? Do you think that if he asked his “question” would he get the answer he wanted?
oh hey!
I think CAA is a perfect storm of Gon and Killua's trauma, and tbh it snowballs from there.
Killua was already raised to see his only value in his utility.
"If I can't be loved I'll be useful, and if I can be useful enough I can be loved" or something like that <- someone smarter than me put that into a text post and it felt so Killua when I read it.
Anyway. Initially, Gon tells Killua constantly that he's glad they're friends and that he's met him. Gon is pretty perceptive, and I'd like to think some of this is due to seeing how Illumi treated Killua and wanting to reassure him that he is qualified and Deserving of having a friend. This works up to a point, but Gon has issues too.
Gon's abandonment, his guilt, and his single-mindedness really don't help things along when they get to Kite and the ants, and where a less preoccupied Gon might have picked up on some of Killua's tells (because he absolutely makes an effort to hide these from Gon), he's too busy to notice them now. He's in over his head, trying to fix what he views as his mistake, the only way he knows how, and it's worked out okay for him previously, so he's not going to slow down anytime soon. It's a mess, and then you throw in Palm and Knov and Meruem and Komugi and the Royal Guards, and Gon and Killua are living out a nightmare while all the adults around them act as nightmare foils to their own dysfunction... and what do you get?
Well, you get Killua thinking he doesn't matter to Gon outside his usefulness as a teammate, and Gon burning himself out (like his test in Trick Tower) at the cost of everything else around him. It's the worst possible timing for them, and both of the boys aren't great communicators at the best of times.
To answer your other question, I think in any other moment Killua would've gotten the answer he wanted. Maybe even in that moment, it might have pulled Gon back a little from the dark. That being said, I don't know if Gon would've given the answer in a way that would be satisfying or believable to Killua. I can see him still needing reassurance in other ways (without him coming right out and asking for it).
I hope that made sense! I feel like I wasn't qualified (haha) to answer this, but I did my best. Your asks are always so much fun!

New Beginnings (Chapter 1): HxH fanfic where the Royal Guards and Meruem survive.
A fic where Pouf and Youpi arrive before Netero activates the nuke, and they save the King. The mortified Hunters find themselves stunned when the King shows them mercy. Gon is unable to transform once Pitou admits Kite is dead. The fic will mostly follow the Royal Guards, and Meruem grows to love them for their devotion. He and Komugi separate from them to live a peaceful life, and the Guards begin their shenanigans. They'll fight at Heaven's Arena (Pouf will interfere in Chrollo's quest to become a Floor Master, impeding his fight with Hisoka), they'll meet the Troupe, go to Greed Island, and meet Gon and Killua (who have not separated) again. KilluGon-HisoIllu pairings. Hisoka is raring to fight them, which might end up terribly for him. The Guards will exploit their potential (since in canon they were newborns) by training, and will reach Meruem's level and beyond. Gon can't let his grudge against Pitou go, even with the reincarnated Kite's encouragement. Read it here.
X
Forty seconds before Netero unleashed Zero Hand, Pouf and Youpi descended upon the battlefield, reflexively cloaked in Zetsu. What greeted them was a bewildering spectacle of colours and flashes moving with such velocity that even their exceptional senses struggled to keep up.
Their eyes darted frantically along the blurs. Frankly, they couldn’t even tell the progression of the fight.
Who had the leverage?
Which one was the enemy?
Which one was the King?
Then, abruptly, the frenetic blurs of dance ceased, leaving only the sight of an arm hurtling through the air.
"Ah, there he is!" Pouf moved to dart forward, but Youpi restrained him.
"Wait," Youpi appealed as Pouf glared at him. "The King has the advantage. The old man's lost two limbs. If we interfere now, we’ll only be insulting the King.”
Pouf frowned. He turned to look at the scene, biting his lip in concern. His wings blazed in multiple shades of colours as he decided to release his scales.
And then, in a blaze of brilliance, the entirety of the old man's aura transformed into a light as blinding as a star. Pouf and Youpi shielded their eyes. The next they heard was an immense explosion. They could almost feel the heat from here. As the echoes of the blast subsided, they cautiously surveyed the aftermath, only to be met with settling dust and debris.
"No!" Pouf's cry echoed through the air, but Youpi restrained him a second time, his strength holding Pouf in check.
Pouf growled as he recoiled in Youpi's arms, desperately trying to reach the King. "Youpi, release me!" he snarled, but Youpi remained resolute.
It’s not that Youpi didn’t want to help the King. The matter was that Youpi's newfound clarity, the alarming evolution he'd undergone during his short fights helped him assess situations dispassionately. He could now maintain a cool head, and he could segregate myriads of dangers accordingly.
“Look,” he pointed once the dust settled. “The King is alive, and the old man is withering away. Let’s allow His Majesty to finish him off, then we can return to the palace and help Pitou.”
Surprisingly, Pouf nodded. “I’ll create a clone to go back. I want to notify Pitou that we’ll be coming soon.”
Their eyes were keen on the distant figures of the King and his opponent. As the conversation progressed, Pouf's brow furrowed. Then, he squinted.
“Do you see anything?” Youpi asked.
“… There’s an abundance of white, purple, and black in erratic ratios. The old man exudes worry and fear, yet his confidence remains steadfast. In fact, I'd dare say his confidence is only growing.”
“But he’s about to die, isn’t he? That last attack seems to have drained him.” Youpi wondered what the King was saying to him.
“No…” Pouf’s brows creased, “something feels wrong.” It was now Netero’s turn to talk. “I was right. His confidence, no, his cockiness is growing,” his voice trembled. “Alarmingly so.”
Youpi’s eyes widened. “Why?”
“… Something’s wrong,” Pouf raised his voice with a quiver. Then, he let out a wheezing breath as Spiritual Message's emotional patterns became clearer.
“What? What’s wrong?”
“Youpi, get out of here! I’m getting the King!”
“What? Wait, Pouf, what’s going on?”
Without further hesitation, Pouf raced towards the King. “Don't ask questions! Just go!”
“I can’t leave you two here! I’ll come with you!”
“No time to argue! Do as you please!” Pouf's voice grew distant.
“Meruem, King of Ants, you understand nothing… of humanity’s infinite—”
Netero abruptly stopped when he saw a flash before him. This hesitation, this nearly imperceptible delay was his doom.
“Pouf!” Meruem's shout was loud and wrathful amidst the sudden chaos. “Unhand me! Unhand me at once or I—”
“He bears a bomb, Your Majesty! We must flee!” Pouf's voice rang out.
“What are you—”
Despite his moribund state, Meruem could discern the shock etched upon Netero’s face. Without hesitation, he plunged two fingers into his chest, piercing his heart.
“… What…” Meruem mumbled.
Under normal circumstances, the bomb would detonate in 0.3 microseconds. Yet, nestled within Netero’s failing heart, its activation awaited the cessation of all vital functions. With two and a half seconds to spare, Pouf and Youpi seized the opportunity, propelling themselves away in a blur of motion.
Barely enough to avoid the detonation site.
When Pouf reached Youpi with the King under his arm, Youpi clasped Pouf's hand, unleashing a burst of speed that shattered the sound barrier. Through the transformative power of his metamorphosis, Youpi reshaped his form, sacrificing muscle mass to enhance his agility. This allowed him to propel himself 1.5 times his usual velocity, distancing them from the impending detonation.
As the bomb erupted, their extremities felt like they'd tripled in weight. The air around them felt scorching, and the shockwave hurtled them through the air, propelling them towards a wasteland filled with mountains. They rammed onto one, but the strength of the shockwave had been so violent the crash wasn’t enough to decrease their momentum. Youpi brought his wings forward and wrapped them around Pouf and the King to protect them, bearing most of the impact.
The momentum decreased after one kilometre. They fell onto the ground and rolled, until they finally came to a violent stop, battered and dazed.
For a moment, they were motionless. Then, they coughed.
Pouf and Youpi sat on their knees, struggling to regain their bearings. Their hearts raced as they gasped for air, feeling smoke in their throats. Meruem rose stoically, seemingly unmarred by the ordeal.
It was then that Pouf's brows creased. “Y… Your Majesty!” he cried raspily at the sight of the cuts permeating the King's body.
“Your Majesty!” called Youpi. “Are you alright? Are you in any pain? I can take us to Pitou in eight minutes!”
Meruem dusted himself off. Then, Youpi grunted slightly. His balance momentarily faltered before regaining his footing on one knee.
"Are you alright?" Pouf inquired. It did not go unnoticed by him in midst of the chaos how Youpi had borne the majority of the impact.
Youpi responded with a subtle nod, indicating that he would manage. Their attention returned to the King, awaiting his reaction.
“… A bomb,” Meruem muttered, his gaze drifting skyward. So many stars, he briefly recognised. “How undignified.”
No, he thought to himself. The old soldier was merely fulfilling his duty. He stuck to his resolve to the end without allowing his heart to be swayed. And yet, for such a lethal thing to exist…
He looked down again. “Did you fight off the intruders?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
To their immense surprise, the King's gaze softened slightly. “Meruem,” he announced with pride. “My name is Meruem. I know that now. So, from now on, call me Meruem.”
“… Meruem-sama,” they said collectively with a nod.
“No. Meruem.”
“But, sire—”
“Don’t make me repeat—” A realisation dawned as he spoke, and for a brief second, he was shocked something so obvious didn't come to him until now. “You left Pitou all alone.”
“Yes, sire, we wanted to—”
“Did you neutralise the intruders? Or did you leave her and Komugi in the palace alone with them?”
“The man I fought is completely defenceless. I removed his Nen ability,” Pouf reassured.
Youpi swallowed heavily with a drop of sweat bead on his cheek.
Noticing, Pouf's brows creased warily. “Youpi, what is it?”
Youpi lowered his head, seemingly unable to meet their gaze.
“Did you not kill them?” asked Meruem.
“I… I didn’t.”
“What!?” Pouf screamed. “They did not best you in combat, so why are they still alive?”
Pouf blabbered incessantly, with indignation, but Meruem told him to quiet down. Imperially, he firmly told Youpi to explain himself. To not lie to him.
And so, Youpi did. He recounted his encounter with Knuckle and the others, detailing the events surrounding Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and the ensuing bargain.
Despite his shame, Youpi met Meruem's gaze with unwavering honesty. “I felt that breaking a promise would make me a loser, even if it were a promise made to an enemy. I understand that I have betrayed you, and for that I’m unworthy of asking for forgiveness. But please, Your Majesty, allow me the chance to ensure your safety and eliminate any remaining threats. After that, I will accept all punishments.”
Meruem’s eyes were shadowed, and so they couldn’t tell what he was thinking.
Pouf erupted in a tirade of indignation. “How could you do that!? You allowed your feelings to cloud your judgment! You prioritised yourself over the King! As we speak, these intruders may kill Pitou! And once we’re there, they’ll fight to take the King’s life! I can't believe you'd be so selfish as to—”
Silencing Pouf and addressing Youpi directly, Meruem was calm. "Firstly, I commanded you to call me Meruem. I tire of repeating myself. Secondly, I only asked that you don't lie to me. I see no reason to punish those who speak the truth. Let's return to the palace now."
Their mouths hung wide. Pouf's mouth moved, but no words came out.
It was then Meruem's gaze drifted into the distance. “… I trust Pitou,” he said with implicit sincerity.
They were dazed. It had been not long ago that the smallest of inconveniences resulted in Meruem whipping their faces with his tail. All they could do was comply. Meruem held onto Youpi’s leg with his tail, and Pouf followed behind. During their return, Youpi provided a detailed account of the enemy's abilities. Pouf could only shake his head with a scowl, veiling his anger.
Three and a half minutes before their arrival, Knuckle and the others advanced towards Gon's location. Pitou had already succeeded in healing Komugi, with fifteen minutes remaining. Outside, Ikalgo briefly stood guard to assess their surroundings, joining the group shortly after.
She’s already fully healed… thought Pitou. I just need to think of something fast. I can’t take her with me to Peijing, but Pouf and Youpi aren’t here. And even if Pouf were here, he hates Komugi. I fear what he might do in a misguided attempt to protect the King. I know he'd be able to convince Youpi, too.
Knuckle, Killua, Palm, Ikalgo, and Meleoron arrived. Pitou grew increasingly nervous as they spoke to Gon, and all Gon did was assent. It seemed his own allies were as wary of him as Pitou was.
Then, Pouf arrived.
Gracefully flying through the window, Pouf warily observed the enemies. Knuckle contemplated using his ability against Pouf, but he knew the distance afforded Pouf ample time to evade. Similarly, Meleoron found himself unable to act, but because he was trapped in a paralysis from being uncloaked before two royal guards.
“… Pouf,” Pitou’s eyes widened. In any other situation, she would be thrilled to see him. But knowing that they differed in how they saw Komugi, she was wary. Was he here on a mission of his own... or, her throat tightened, was he here with news of the King?
Pouf barely restrained himself from smirking smugly. “The King has defeated his enemy. He will arrive shortly along with Youpi and my real body,” the Hunters froze. “Is the woman healed?”
Pitou’s eyes glistened with relief. “Yes, she’s okay! Please tell His Majesty that Komugi is okay!”
The Hunters found themselves unable to breathe.
It wasn’t just Pitou now, but Pouf, Youpi, and the King. This was bad. No, not bad. This was the worst possible scenario. This woman was their bargaining chip, but if the King was coming, if he could get a hold of her, the Hunters would lose their only leverage. For Gon, the knot in his throat was different. The current situation meant that Pitou had no reason to keep her end of the bargain.
“You mustn’t be afraid,” reassured Pouf with a condescending smile. “If you obey, the King will surely spare your lives. His heart is boundless, that way.”
“Yeah, and then what!? He’ll just turn humanity into a bunch of mindless soldiers!?” Knuckle yelled boldly.
Pouf closed his eyes as his smile widened. “That depends entirely on His Majesty.”
With no reason left to lie, Pitou withdrew the surgical tools from Komugi's body. The wound closed seamlessly, leaving no scars, and the oxygen mask vanished.
"She will wake soon," Pitou informed Pouf, who nodded in acknowledgment.
The aura around Dr. Blythe turned thinner, which suggested Pitou would deactivate the ability. Before she did so, Pouf spoke. “Heal your arm.”
“… Oh, right.” She extended her arm as she rose to her feet. The box opened and scissors emerged to cut down her sleeve.
The darkness and rage in Gon’s expression gradually vanished as the realisation kicked in. The realisation Pitou had neither the reason nor intention to fulfil her promise.
In just fifteen seconds, her arm was healed. She clenched her fist until it scrunch, and swung it around. She was satisfied.
“We’re here,” Pouf announced.
The allied ants' expressions twisted with fear, their lips downturned in a whimper of terror.
In an instant, Pouf's sharp eyes caught Meleoron's subtle gesture. As Meleoron's chest rose with a deep, silent breath, he felt a sudden pressure on his neck and something sharp against his temple. His surrounding allies had only felt a breeze.
Meleoron let out a whimper of pain, and when they searched for him, they found Pouf as if he'd never moved from his position, now holding Meleoron in place. His claws were pressed against Meleoron's temple, with his leg firmly planted over Meleoron's to force him still. He drew blood.
“M-Meleoron!” cried Knuckle.
"I won't allow you to escape or make anyone invisible," Pouf stated coldly. "That's your ability, isn't it? You plan to use such petty tactics against the King. You might try holding your breath to flee, but I can pierce your brain faster than you can activate your power. The choice is yours."
Meleoron trembled.
“Be grateful I did not kill you on the spot.”
Immediately, Pitou positioned the unconscious Komugi behind her and drove herself into a corner. Even if they tried, they wouldn’t be able to harm Komugi. Pitou was, quite literally, shielding the girl with her own body. She'd noticed Gon’s aura grow darker. Witnessing Pouf's threat towards the chameleon traitor only fuelled Gon's instability further, Pitou noted.

This seems like a fun ask game... https://www.tumblr.com/theclearblue/745775598702592000/hello-can-i-ask-from-this-ask-game?source=share
Can I ask about Yona of the Dawn, Hunter x Hunter and Mob Psycho 100?
HxH
Favorite character: Hisoka Did y'all hear something? Sounded like someone said Hisoka but not me ahaha. Uhhhh Killua and Komugi are my answers, honorable mention to Kite as well (guess I just like the white haired characters lol. Oh and really all of the Phantom Troupe but especially Chrollo is so much fun.
Favorite arc/episode/scene: Favorite overall arc probably is York New but a lot of my favorite moments come from the Chimera ant arc, so I would tie them. Fave episode/scene I think is Meruem and Komugi dying together, I cry every singe time lmao
Character I think is underrated: Ikalgo is the guy of all time, I love that stupid ass octopus so much lmao. I don't know why but I find him so heartwarming and I want to cheer him on in every scene
Character I think is overrated: Hmm I'm really struggling to answer this actually. I feel like I'm on the same wavelength with the general consensus of the characters. Maaaaybe Kurapika just a teeny tiny bit? I'm doing a slow rewatch with a friend though and she is a fierce Kurapika hater lmao so I feel like I'm being influenced.
Fave ship/pairing: Going to be basic but Killugon, honorable mention to Hisoka/Illumi
Something I love about the series: I think the character journeys and parallels are so so so cool, and it's a great example of character development where it's more of a regression (with Gon, specifically). The parallels between Meruem and Gon where they start on opposite ends, and by the end Meruem has gained humanity and Gon has lost it? Gets me every time. Also just such a great cast of characters, picking a favorite is kind of hard when I think almost every character, even the hateable ones, are just so solidly written.
Yona of the Dawn
Favorite Character: Hmm three way tie I think between Yona, Soo Won, and Jae-Ha (wow now thinking of it, he's kinda like Sanji huh....I was set up lmao)
Favorite arc/episode/scene: Gosh I need to reread because my memory is god awful but off the top of my head, Zeno's backstory is obviously the best in the series, and I think was animated in an OVA so that's my fave episode lol. Also love when Hak and Yona FINALLY get together, and Soo Won reuniting with Hak as well.
Character I think is underrated: You know what, I'm saying Jae-Ha!! Everyone's fave dragon is either blue or yellow (which, like, I GET it) but nobody gives enough love to green dragon :( People hate him for flirting with Yona but it's so obvious to me that he's just doing that to tease Hak lmao. But he has SUCH a big heart and loves and wants to protect all of them, again I need to reread to really elaborate properly but!! He needs more love!!!
Character I think is overrated: Hmm. I don't think I have an answer for this one actually.
Favorite ship/pairing: Yona/Hak....are we surprised...I'm not....
Favorite thing about the series: I feel like I give the same answer for all of these lmao because I'm such a big character reader, but yeah the characters absolutely. They are (well, most of the time) the ones pushing the plot, not the other way around. Everyone says it but Yona's arc as a character is just so so so good, especially for a female character. I would also say I really love how the worldbuilding goes so hand in hand with the characters developing and also understanding where they come from in decisions. It's a pretty simple fantasy world but it just does everything right.
(I'm a fake fan and haven't finished MP100 Season 3 :( And my memory is the worst on this series but do know that my fave character is both Mob and Reigen)

things that have me on the floor
1. the way pitou words this - not "I must serve the king and he has grown attached to this woman" but "I love someone and he loves her" PITOU 🥺
2. yet more parallels - who is kite to killua?
3. the concept of having such a relationship that shapes your very identity. the king is meruem because she is kogumi. in this instance instead of merum being similar to gon, he's actually more like killua. gon changed too due to their friendship but killua REALLY changed
4. if killua hadn't intervened in this scene, komugi would never have reunited with meruem at all which for some reason has me pacing and wailing

Yoshihiro Togashi; Creation of the best shonen beyond morality
Yoshihiro Togashi is mostly known because he is the mangaka that made Hunter X Hunter, one of the most acclaimed shonen nowadays. However, I think that his other magnificent work, YuYu Hakusho, is as good as his most famous manga. It’s amazing how well done are these two masterpieces, and we should understand them as the continuation of the other one. YYH can be understood as an experiment, a very well done one, because along the whole series, we can see that the power’s system changes. In first sight, its like the predecessor of the NEN system, that its later implemented on HxH. Also, as an experiment, we see that the finals arcs, there are stand-like power system, taking influence on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. If that’s not enough, we see the main characters will influence in HxH’s main characters, as a better way to perform those characters. Even though we can see YYH as Togashi’s experiment, its undeniable that its an excellent shonen, it has everything, good characters, good story, good power system, good villains.
Tumblr media
I love how Togashi introduces you to these particular worlds, where you can feel sympathy for every character, even the villains, because through these mangas, we see that each character has their own motivations, their philosophy, and there’s a reason why they are like that. Togashi, in this way, doesn’t try to sell cheap characters as an evil person or good person, no, he shows that evil or good doesn’t really matters in the moral way, because people are like they are because of reasons. This proposal is introduced in YYH, with the example of Toguro The Younger, who seems as a formidable and horrible villain, and killing one of the show's most beloved characters, but at the end, you get to know the truth, and will make the most hater of him, to cry, or feel bad for him, because he didnt have bad intentions. Something similar happens then with Sensui, the next main antagonist of that manga. I think to better explain this, it’s the known parallelism between Gon and Meruem, main character and the main antagonist in the Chimeras’s Arc in Hunter x Hunter. Gon is the protagonist of this adventure, we see his whole development, and we see a nice and charming kid, who seems to do good. In the other hand, we see Meruem as the bad character, which at the beginning of his life, he starts doing evil things, but both then, in some incredible twist, they turn the opposite, because they had reasons for each decision. Gon wanted vengeance for Kite’s death, and he would do everything to accomplish that, even at the cost of the life of a little girl, and Meruem wanted to be with Komugi, the human friend he made by playing Gungi, and he would leave his pride for accomplishing that.
This dilemma happens many times, for example Killua’s case, when he was an assassin and he had killed many people, but does that makes him a bad person? It’s interesting how Togashi propose this, the morality within the characters, within his works, creating unique interactions for each character, with a complexity beyond other works, making him one of the best mangakas ever.

You've mentioned a few times that the CAA is your favorite arc, and I'd love to hear you wax on about why that is! Since it's so....controversial amongst fans, it seems. Or, alternatively, you could wax on about your *least* favorite arc and why! I very much enjoy hearing your hxh meta, no matter what lol
Thanks so much for asking! It's hard to summarize all of the many reasons why I love Chimera Ant Arc, but I'd love to go on and on about it for a while nonetheless and maybe people will get something out of what I have to say!
(I actually don't think I'd have much to say about a least favorite arc, as I've re-watched/re-read I've found reasons to love all the arcs and I think the series works so well as a whole that it's gotten harder for me to single out any particular arc as a least favorite.)
I can understand why CAA is controversial to a degree. I think for a lot of shounen anime fans in particular, it's a difficult pill to swallow--it's long, it's complex, the focus isn't always on the main characters, and I'd actually agree that there are points where it gets overly dragged out and could have used some editing (especially in the anime, as much as I love it). It also goes in a lot of directions that aren't what one might expect watching it for the first time, which is actually one of the things I love most about it.
Togashi toys with shounen tropes and expectations from the very beginning of the series, but CAA is where that aspect of the series starts to get more intense and pointed. If you look at Yu Yu Hakusho and read interviews about it with Togashi, it seems he was dissatisfied with having to stick to the usual shounen formula (particularly in the Chapter Black arc, where you can almost see the editors forcing him to tone it down and telling him what he can and cannot do, removing his authorial autonomy). He has stated that he wanted to deconstruct the characters towards the end of Yu Yu Hakusho, but he was told he could not by his editors. I think this was deeply disappointing to him, especially with his health seriously dwindling at that time due to overwork.
When he created HxH, I believe he did so with the intention to build a series where he could initially follow a familiar battle shounen formula (albeit with clever twists from the very beginning), only to later use the series as a vehicle to comment on that very formula and then give himself far more freedom to pivot between different genres and switch focus as much as he wanted.
Here are just a few of the many, many ways CAA directly contradicts the audience expectations from a shounen series:
Gon (protagonist) and Merum (antagonist) never battle one another--in fact, they don't even speak to each other once
As the arc goes on, the human side of the war increasingly expresses negative sides of humanity (selfishness, pride, revenge, etc.) while the ant side increasingly expresses more noble aspects of humanity (loyalty, kindness, self-improvement, etc.), which of course makes it morally complex and there isn't just one "side" to root for
Gon's big power up is horrifying, tragic, brutal, and self-destructive instead of glorious
Netero ultimately defends humanity using a dirty trick instead of his own hard-won battle prowess
Meruem finds his reason for living in a disabled, physically weak girl, and the way he dies centers around spending his time with her rather than in any battle or involving himself in what the protagonists are doing
Gon is unable to save Kite despite "winning" (of course, Kite does make it ultimately, but not due to anything Gon did)
Gon and Killua's friendship and mental health are deeply affected by the things they go through in this arc--the "power of friendship" isn't enough to make everything turn out okay (at least not in the short term)
It is often the genuine kindness and mercy of the characters that makes the biggest difference in this arc, and those kindnesses are ultimately what changes the trajectory of the story
This is by no means an exhaustive list nor am I expressing it as well as it deserves, but I love how CAA intentionally subverts what the audience expects from it, but at the same time it also tells an emotionally engaging, intense, thoughtful, and beautiful story. I love how much of what happens in Chimera Ant arc involves themes and ideas Togashi had been subtly building on through much of the series, like Gon's risk-taking behavior and his issues with guilt and self-esteem, Killua's painful devotion to Gon, the idea of having to make great sacrifices in order to obtain great power (like Kurapika's nen contract prior), the idea that one's entire life can change when you meet one person, the idea of second chances...
The parallels between multiple characters and the way themes repeat and are interwoven into the story are breathtakingly brilliant in my opinion--I've gone through CAA so many times and I've read and written tons of meta about it, and yet it feels like I'm constantly discovering or realizing some aspect of it that I had missed or didn't consider.
I love what Togashi has to say through this arc about the transformative power of love and the different sides of humanity.
And on a more personal level, I adore the intensity of Gon and Killua's relationship in this arc and all the love and angst between them, the fact that the Meruem and Komugi scene made me sob multiple times even after I had already seen it before, how beautiful and filled with heart the anime production is for this arc even if the pacing is a little rough at times (the animation, voice acting, and soundtrack are top-notch), and the character development of Meruem and his Royal Guard. To me, CAA was what turned the series from something enjoyable and well-done to an absolute masterpiece. I love that you can go back through the series from the beginning and see the subtle ways it was building towards CAA as well--for me, it elevated the entire series because knowing what it's heading towards changed my perception of everything leading up it as well.
I could say so much more and I'm tempted to, but I think this a good summary of what I love about it at least. Thank you so much for asking me and giving me a chance to talk about what makes this my favorite arc!

Anime Update V2 66
Vinland Saga S2 - Ketil and his sons went to offer a tribute to King Cantue and ran into Leif Erikson while there, who is accompanied by an orphan slave he bought and named Thorfinn. Conversation sparks the idea that the Thorfinn currently owned by Ketil and at work on his farm might just be the Thorfinn Leif has been searching for, but then things start to go south when Olmar fails a swordsman test presented to him by Canute, leading to him getting mercilessly bullied and mocked about it by others in a very uncomfortable way until Olmar snaps and challenges the lead bully to a duel to the death. Due to Thorgil encouraging him and some sneaky interference by one of Canute's secret agents, Olmar gets his first kill, which sets off a complete bloody massacre of the king's other men by Thorgil, and it horrifies Olmar. Upon learning that this entire arrangement was a trap by Canute so that Ketil could be arrested and forfeit his farm land, the family flees and escape by boat with Leif who demands for Thorfinn in exchange. Meanwhile, Canute is getting prepared to march on Ketil's farm with over 100 men to take it by force. Fuuuck!
Hunter x Hunter - Aside from Killua delivering a glorious decapitating blow to Rammot, a brief fight with Cheetu, getting to see the mindless zombie that Neferpitou made from Kite, and Netero preparing for the "final showdown" with Meruem and his ant forces that I already know by this saga's length is going to be far from that, there wasn't much here that grabbed me enough to talk about.
Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works - Big fight with Caster and Kuzuki, Caster is betrayed and killed by Archer, but Archer still isn't back on Shirou and Rin's side. He wants to fight Shirou, and kill him!
Re:ZERO - Got done with the entire rest of Season 2, which in itself should speak to how high the quality was. In addition, after the episodes that gave us backstory for Emilia and how her forest and her people got frozen, I watched the second OVA, The Frozen Bond, which centered on when Emilia met Puck and their contract was forged, being a far more serious and dramatic piece than Memory Snow, even including actual action, peril, and villains in it. There's altogether way too much content, twist, turns, and great character moments for me to cover here, so I'll just say that I absolutely loved it all, Subaru and Emilia are everything, Echidna is bae despite her cold amorality, Garfiel and Puck are both Good Boys, Regulus and Pandora can go fuck themselves, Betelgeuse deserved better, Roswaal deserves worse, and Beako deserves the fucking world.
Symphogear AXZ - Got two episodes done with, the first giving us some more character focus for Shirabe, making it automatically work for me, though I also got invested in what was going on with the Illuminati's side of things and felt it so tragic that Prelati had to get killed (for real this time) like that, just when she was out to warn St. Germain about Adam's treachery. The following episode saw St. Germain fight against Hibiki and Kirika while expressing her desire to end all oppression in the world, but she ends up opening her heart to possibly finding another way...and that's when Adam and Tiki show up to let us know that shit's about to get real. The episode finishes with Hibiki and St. Germain united in saying "Even so!", which I'd not even realized Hibiki says a lot until it got pointed out in-universe.
Eureka Seven - Saw the remaining episodes set in the mines. There was a part near the end of the first one where Dewey announces his plans to his new unit, but that's not really gone anywhere yet. Renton and Eureka still have some awkward tension between them, but this time it's due to Eureka constantly getting physical and mental stress from being around these mines, to the point where she feels Renton should probably be entrusted with the Nirvash full time. After this one incident where a miner tries to make off with the Nirvash, Eureka hits her limit and goes off on her own inside the Nirvash just as the military launches an attack against Gekko State. When Renton recovers her, her body has melted into this almost putty-like state and is in critical condition when Renton activates another Seven Swell to escape the collapsing mines with her. Through all of this, Holland is just being the world's biggest douche, beating up on Renton, ordering the Gekko to leave Renton and Eureka to possibly die in the mines, and straight up making a death threat to Renton for if he should ever get inside the Nirvash at the end. Funny thing about this is that as the episode closed out, "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" was playing on my radio. Couldn't help but apply it Holland and think about that one joke from Nostalgia Critic's Eight Crazy Nights review: "And given the choice between the two of you, I'd choose the...uh....oh Hell no, I'm going with the green guy!"

I don’t know if you are still doing it hxh I need to know your fave character and one piece if you actually read it
It's been SO LONG since I read what I did of OP, anon. But my favorite was Zoro by far! Anyway, here's HunterxHunter:
Character I first fell in love with: So whenever I'm asked who my favorite is, I spin a wheel in my head and whoever it lands on is the answer of the day. Today, it's Leorio! But yesterday it was Kurapika. The other day it was Knuckle.
A character I used to love/like, but now do not: Not applicable.
A ship that I used to love/like, but now do not: Not applicable.
Prettiest character: Kurapika.
My most hated character: Hmmmm. Even those I "hate", I like. Maybe Chrollo, but mostly because it's more like I'm just not that attached to him. I don't actually hate him at all.
My OTP: Gon/Killua. Listen. When the cat-eyed "rival" loves his shonen foil lead and basically says so in his monologues, my heart goes out in sympathy to them. I support Killua.
I know my heritage of low-key "doomed" shonen love stories between leads. I see you, Killua. I see you.
My NOTP: Hmmm....
Saddest death: Kite! I'm basic! Meruem and Komugi can go wait in line.
Favorite season: ANTIQUES ROADSHOW IN YORKNEW CITY!!!!!!! FAVORITE PART OF THE WHOLE SERIES! I THINK IT'S SEASON TWO!
Least favorite season: Hmm. HMMMMMMM. I like them all. Cannot answer.
Character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but I hate: I think by now we have established that it is rare for me to hate a shonen character in a meaningful way that lacks enjoyment of it for me.
My “you’re a piece of trash, but still my favorite”: Hisoka. The lion and cheetah Chimera ants.
My “beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this” favorite: Gon's "aunt". Alluka and Nanika (Something.)
My “this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but I still love it” ship: Um. Is Hisoka/Ging a viable answer? Because I think it would be funny, if awful. Hisoka/Gon, because a lot of the canon tension requires for it to be present. Creepy, but constructive and fascinating.
My “they’re kind of cute, and I lowkey ship them, but I’m not too invested” ship: Meruem/Komugi. Kurapika/Melody. Canary/Killua.

I genuinely feel like breaking bad has overtaken jojos in my favorite shows rankings.
For me a HUGE thing is tone in a show. The reason I feel such a love for Hunter x hunter is the commitment to tone. It starts off deceptively lighthearted but then the chimera ant arc (and especially the palace invasion) is 60 episodes of an unrelenting dark tone. The show didn't shy away from going entirely all in for the beautiful arc that was with the ants. It created such a beautiful atmosphere and made me feel like I could never experience media quite like that. Like the experience was purely mine. Like a more dark murderous, tragic part, combined with beautiful and equally tragic displays of love (gon for kite, killua for gon, meruem and komugi for each other) couldn't be achieved. And I'm yet to see media do something quite like that like togashi and madhouse achieved. And that's why it's still at the top of my list. Also the music. Oh god the music. And the art. The budget must've been huge. Such a beautiful product.
I loved bojack horseman but during the penultimate episode it was so close to reaching that tone but it couldn't commit. It was touching on such dark topics but I wish it built that atmosphere in bojacks drowning state more. Episodes where it flashed back to the past do that, in my opinion, being why season 4 of bjhm was my favorite. The vibe of the past came with a lot of feeling to it and the subject matter was so bleak and depressing and beautiful. But the show never went too far. And so while I love the show it isn't my top 3, I'd say.
The same is true for jojos. I think what helps me get over that is the sheer amount of lore and story there is to jojos. My favorite ending was part 6 bc (no one understands that they didn't die but I can touch on that another time) the perspective of emporio being completely alone in his painful memories is terrifying. I found myself projecting myself onto this boy and could do nothing but cry and feel so angry and sad at the ending. I believe that was the intended lasting emotion but many don't get over the dissatisfaction. It's the entire point that everything was erased and therefore none of it mattered. And that's beautifully tragic. But no other part (haven't read 7 or 8. Halfway through 7 for so long) has that type of commitment to the plunge. Part 5 akmost did and then flubbed it with the worst last couple episodes possible. But jojos doesn't really need to do the tone i like. I think its good, but it's a stupid series. I was always a part 3-er bc the cast had so much chemistry and were so lovable. I have a little nenderoid of polnareff on my bookshelf a couple feet away from me. Basically... bc of how much jojos there is and just how fun of an experience it is, it's been my second favorite for a couple years.
But because breaking bads ending does exactly what appeals to my tastes I think it might just overtake it.
Animaniacs is very much the odd one out in my top 5 list lol. I think its just cute
