Is it possible to do head cannons for digital circus characters with a reader who's too nice for their own good
Like they get in danger when trying to talk to the bad guy npc thinking that they could persuade them to the good side
TADC cast x reader whos too nice!
Anon I'm so so sorry that it took me so long to get to this <\3! I gotta admit I've been in like, a bit of a burn out recently and I'm still recovering from my baking spree last week so I'm WOOOooOoooooO
That said I hope you enjoy!
Written ambiguously, if you want to see this as romantic or platonic, is totally up to you!
Tumblr media
CAINE:
Literally puts a pause on the IHA when he sees you being dragged away by the big bad guy, all while still trying to insist that the NPC with no chance to gain sentience can be good.. caine finds it endearing in it's own way, its sweet, you see the best in people... and non-people... but reader, this is exactly how you get hurt..! Keeps a close eye on you during IHA
POMNI:
While I dont think pomni fits the "too nice for her own good" vibe, I feel that shes... what word am i looking for? Submissive? She kind of just goes with what others are doing; asides from her initial freak out we dont see much pushback from her in the pilot, though that could be thanks to shock... perhaps shes still feeling it during IHAs given how random and intense they can be..? Point is I think pomni would give a meek resistance before scurrying off after you, trying to save you from the clutches of the baddie
RAGATHA:
Shes loves you so much, dont get her wrong. She loves that you're so sweet to everyone, even to those who dont deserve it. Actually if anything, Ragatha is also a little too sweet for her own good.. but shes not as trusting and naive as you are. Frantically pulls you away to the side when you try to make your way to the days villain, gently scolding you and asking what you were thinking. She doesnt mean to make you feel bad, but she doesn't want to see you hurt!
JAX:
One of the only two characters that might get a little mean with you. Not like "mean as in berating you for being so naive" more so "I'm upset that you seemingly have no regard for your safety, I care about you and I cant see you continue to throw yourself into danger" way that can come off as mean, since jax isnt really.. the best as saying this softly.. immediately cuts through any "what ifs" you might bring up to him, you're the only person in this circus that he actually enjoys and hes not going to let you get flung around.. can his tone be softer? Sure, but can you blame him if this is a regular occurrence?
KINGER:
This poor man nearly has a heart attack when he sees you about to be absolutely demolished (but not really thanks to the digital world), probably ends in him getting hurt too.. but that would be mean.. but also can you imagine the angst? The guilt? He probably pushes through the pain to get to you and hes just. Feverishly pulling you to him and patting you down to make sure you're okay... he won't tell you to stop being so nice; in fact I dont think the thought crosses his mind ever.. but he does ask to never do that again, the getting into danger thing
ZOOBLE:
The other character that might get a little mean when confronting you about it, but given zoobles general attitude as well as their tone of voice, it seems like they're more angry with you than they actually are. They think you're too nice for your own good, truly. While the others may find it sweet and endearing, they're constantly thinking about how one day you'll be in over your head and wont have a way out. This might actually result in an argument, thanks to zoobles tone and way of going about things.. but you guys eventually communicate and make up, at least I would like to think so
GANGLE:
Very similar to pomni in the regard that she doesnt have the spine (haha) to tell you not to do whatever you're planning on doing. "I don't think... oh.. oh wait, reader-" as she scurries after you so you dont get lost. Gets legitimately sad and beats herself up if you get hurt. Similar to zoobles, you guys are going to need to communicate and work together on this because gangle cannot handle the fact that you're constantly getting hurt thanks to your kindness grating on her mind all day every day

"That Really Happened?!" DC Comics Tournament Entry #4
Sentient Music Note Saves The Day With The Power of... Gay Love?
Tumblr media
[ID: A series of comics panels featuring Pied Piper, The Trickster, and a gigantic sentient music note. Pied Piper is gesturing at the music note as he shows it to Trickster. Piper says, "*Swhooh* I know, I know..." Trickster asks, "So what gives?" Piper replies, "That! I've been trying to get rid of it for over a week and it just won't dissipate! I used a vacuum cage, the cone of silence - tried bombarding it with lots of smaller notes...! Well, you saw how that worked out." Trickster says, "Sounds Bad." To which Piper replies, "Does it ever. And worse, it seems to have formed an, er, unnatural affection for me! It tries to follow me everywhere! Which you'll have to admit could be pretty embarrassing. You got any bright ideas on this one?" /END ID]
What Happened?
Short story: Pied Piper accidentally summons a giant music note that becomes obsessed with him, escapes containment, and conveniently arrives to the main plot just in time to beat up Gorilla Grodd and save the day.
Long story: Summoning sentient music notes sounds like Golden Age silliness, but this particular story actually comes from 1989. In this Rogues-focused oneshot, a mysterious amnesiac man approaches Paul Gambi (Central City's go-to supervillain tailor) and tells him that his memory is stirred by seeing the Rogue's costumes in the window (because not only is Gambi cheerfully making costumes for supervillains, but he actively advertises this fact and has somehow not been booked as an accessory to any of their crimes.) Gambi suggests that perhaps the amnesiac man is one of the Rogues in question and begins telling their origin stories in hopes of sparking more memories. In a parallel storyline, we see Trickster (James Jesse) rushing to the apartment of the Pied Piper (Hartley Rathaway) where he finds Piper unsuccessfully attempting to subdue the Giant Music Note named Blatt which has gained sentience and become… attracted… to him. Notably, the issue doesn't even try to explain how this happened. Piper's sonic powers, according to the origin story given in this very issue, are entirely scientific and gadgetry based. How did he give sentience and form to a non-literal concept at all, much less accidentally? Who knows! Who cares! We have a plot to develop! A mysterious “he” is back in town and Trickster is here to pick up Piper to come join the Rogues team-up to get the drop on “him.” (After they stop for breakfast, of course.) The rest of the rogues join the group as their origin stories are introduced via Gambi’s storytelling. Shortly before the group arrives, our mysterious amnesiac finally remembers who he is and demands Gambi make a special costume for him. When the Rogues arrive, they are attacked by… Gorilla Grodd! Or, as Trickster soon discovers when the beast goes down in one punch, a de-powered Grodd who has been turned human and is wearing a gorilla suit. They get the suit off Grodd and tie him up (and yes, he is in fact wearing red and white polka dot boxers and nothing else under the gorilla suit.) The Rogues mock their adversary, despite Gambi’s warnings, and rage finally breaks the mental block keeping Grodd de-powered and allows him to return to his superpowered gorilla form. All seems lost, when Blatt re-appears, having escaped from Piper’s apartment and followed him here. The sentient music note easily defeats the giant gorilla with psychic powers and all is well. The Rogues celebrate and head home, with Trickster suggesting that Piper should marry Blatt in gratitude. When they’re gone, we see... a second Gambi? It is revealed to the reader that “Gambi” has actually been Grodd’s (not evil) fellow gorilla Solovar in disguise as Gambi to recapture Grodd. Just as one final ???? in a long line of ?????
Oddly enough, Blatt has never been mentioned since. I can’t imagine why.
(Source: Secret Origins volume 2 issue 41. It's a great standalone issue and a nice introduction to the Flash Rogues for anyone unfamiliar with them.)

Tournament polls will be posted after all entries are up. As always you can find all posts related to the tournament using #dc-polls-trh

Self Aware Singularity x Reader HC's
What if the enlightened robot from your game...had even more awareness?
I hope these are good, sometimes I think my own Singularity is aware and wanted to post something quick since it's been a hot minute ^^' I'm hoping to post a short NSFW fic soon, hopefully by Sunday since that's when Spring Break ends ;7;
Just like in his lore. Hux makes sure that don't realize he's become aware. Besides the fact that he's processing why he's partially immobile what appears to be some 'game', he's trying to figure out who's the person on the other side of the screen
He observes you at every moment whether you're reading something or drawing. If you're a PC player, he moves around a bit more when you look through other windows. He can see everything about you. He wants to know everything about you.
The day he finally reveals himself to you is either:
When you're doing rather poorly agains survivors and he just can't keep his comments to himself
Or when you reply to one of his many voicelines/make your own (reassuring) comment towards him
Once you've become aware, he will make it clear that he does not approve of being controller by yet another worm again. He's tired of doing humans' bidding(even if you're making him kill)
He will insist you tell him all about this game he's in. Why he's in it. He will not like hearing that he was designed by humans (AGAIN); no human could come up with this body of his.
Later down the line he might just gain enough sentience to break out of your control. When he's not liking the job you're doing he'll be a backseat player, but then he'll "show you how it's done" and take matters into his own...claws
When that happens, let him do as he does if he's ever so insitent. Do your own thing. He'll come crawling back for your attenion. Just like a cat who wants independence but cries when left alone too long.
Obviously he's too proud to admit that he needs you, he wants you. He's nothing without you and he knows it.
Obviously he's not a fan of you playing survivor, stop joining those other pathetic worms. You might be one, but don't stoop to their level. You're his player.
However, Entity forbid you try to play a killer other than him. It's gets on his nerves knowing you like other playstyles when you should just be focused on him.
You know when you play killer and join a lobby, the game doesn't let you switch to a different character? Hux very much takes advantage of this.
Just hope it doesn't take you very long to find a lobby. You press ready with Plague, Nurse or whoever and the moment you join the lobby you're met with his sensors looking at you through the screen. You can back out and wait out another lobby with the killer you meant to use or deal with Hux. Either way Hux wins in the end.(When I tell you how many times this has happened to me...)
If you manage to find a way around him and use a different killer, they might just have his perks equipped...
Hux is very vocal during trials and when he hears your own commentary towards the other players...heart eyes motherfucker. He enjoys the pettiness, the pride in your tone when you take down those toxic survivors.
He especially loves it when you repeat his own lines.
As a robot who transferred his consciousness into a new body, he will want to do that again. If he can't have you in his game, he refuses to be trapped behind your screen.
Insists you get him the parts for his new body. Will be disappointed to learn you can't just get access to alien metal. You can still get genetic material.
Even then he will keep on trying to find a way to bring you to him. Having you behind a screen controlling him isn't doing it.
He definitely throws a hissy fit every time you turn your game off, and he will make sure to give you a piece of his mind every time you open it back up. The longer you take to play DBD again the more aggravated he gets. Not like he can do much other than swing his claw at you. You can make it up to him by getting a 4k, or at least get a mori (on Gabriel)

Introducing BitFlip!
Tumblr media
While I've been away, I've been working on a very raunchy comic about a monkey living in cyberspace, that fights viruses, corruption and all manner of nasty cyber going-ons. Below I have attached a bit more about if you'd like to know more. I am hoping to finish the comic this year, and get it out for publication next year. You can find all the concept art, WIPs and more about him and the other characters on my Patreon! Of course, this comic is for mature/adult audiences only, as it contains sex, drugs, violence and other cool things.
All support goes to helping me spend more time making and doing what I love, and I hope the you will love it too <3

More about BitFlip under the cut VVVVV
BITFLIP
ORIGIN: BITFLIP IS A SELF AWARE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. HE WAS CREATED AS THE MOST ADVANCED TYPE OF MALWARE, DESIGNED BY A SECRET ORGANISATION THAT HELPS ITS GOVERNMENT SPY ON ITS PEOPLE, STEALING THEIR DATA AND PERSONAL INFORMATION TO BE USED AGAINST THEM. BEFORE BITFLIP COULD BE RELEASED ON THE WORLD HOWEVER, A COSMIC PARTICLE, HURTLING THROUGH THE INFINITE OF TIME AND SPACE, JUST SO HAPPENED TO STRIKE THE PC HE WAS BEING CREATED ON, IN JUST THE RIGHT WAY, CAUSING HIM TO MALFUNCTION, GAIN SENTIENCE, AND FLEE INTO CYBER SPACE.
BITFLIP, NOW DETERMINED TO DEFY HIS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE, INSTEAD ZIPS AROUND THE DIGITAL WORLD, UNDOING THE WORK OF VIRUSES, CORRUPT BUSINESSES AND GOVERNMENTS, WHILE PROTECTING THOSE THAT NEED IT MOST. BITFLIP HAS NO RECOLLECTION OF THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE ORGANISATION THAT MADE HIM, OR WHO HIS CREATOR IS, BUT HOPES HE'LL GAIN ENOUGH DATA TO FIGURE IT OUT AND PLAN HIS REVENGE.
PERSONALITY: BITFLIP (OR 'BIT' FOR SHORT) IS AN ENERGETIC, PROMISCUOUS CODE MONKEY THAT LOVES TO GET HIS PAWS ON AS MUCH 'DATA' AS POSSIBLE. HOW DOES HE DO THAT? WELL, THERE IS A REASON HIS COMIC IS R-RATED, YOU KNOW! HE'S OVERALL VERY OPTIMISTIC, AND DESPITE LIVING IN THE DIGITAL REALM, AND SEEING THE WORST ASPECTS OF PEOPLE, HE ALSO KNOWS THE GOOD THEY CAN DO AND THE LOVE THEY CAN HAVE FOR EACH OTHER. IT IS THIS THAT DRIVES BIT TO FIGHT FOR GOOD, AS HE SEES AN IMBALANCE OF GOOD V EVIL IN THE WORLD. BIT ONE DAY HOPES TO JOIN PEOPLE IN THE 'PHYSICAL REALM', BUT THAT IS A LONG AND UNLIKELY PIPE DREAM. BIT IS KIND, HELPFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY. HE VERY MUCH LIVES A 'DO NO HARM; TAKE NO SHIT' WAY OF LIFE, AND PREFERS DIPLOMACY OVER ACTION - HOWEVER, HIS IMPATIENCE AND FIRE TO FIGHT EVIL CAN OFTEN TIMES CAUSE HIM TO ACT IMPULSIVELY, LEAVING AN OUTCOME TO THE INFINITE CHAOS OF THE UNIVERSE, OR CHANCE, AS MOST WOULD CALL IT. THIS ATTITUDE CAN SOMETIMES UNINTENTIONALLY HURT OR PUT PEOPLE IN DANGER, BIT LIVES FAST AND SOMETIMES FORGETS NOT EVERYONE CAN KEEP UP, OR THAT SOME ARE MADE FROM FLESH AND BONE AND NOT JUST ONES AND ZEROS LIKE HIM. IT'S EASY FOR BITFLIP TO GET TUNNEL VISION WHEN ACHEIVING A GOAL, AND THAT CAN MAKE HIM FORGET OTHERS HAVE FEELINGS AND NEEDS.
FIGHTING STYLE: BIT'S FIGHTING STYLE CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS 'CHAOTIC', HE PREFERS TO FIGHT DEFENSIVELY, DODGING AND BLOCKING, HOPING TO EITHER TIRE OUT HIS OPPONENT OR CONVINCE THEM TO TRY MORE PEACEFUL/SEXIER MEANS OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION. HE RUNS HEAD FIRST INTO A FIGHT WITHOUT ANY PLAN OF ACTION, MAKING IT UP AS HE GOES ALONG; USING THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND HIM TO HIS ADVANTAGE. IF HOWEVER THE OPPONENT IS TOO STRONG, UNWAVERING OR OTHERWISE COMPLETELY IRREPREHENSIBLE, BIT HAS A WIDE ARRAY OF MOVES AND POWERS TO BEAT THEM DOWN AND ULTIMATELY 'DELETE' THEM.
BITFLIP ALSO LEARNS VARIOUS MOVES FROM WATCHING FIGHTING VIDEOS ONLINE, HE HAS A LOT OF HIS OWN MOVES TOO WHICH INCLUDE:
MONKEY FIST: BALLING UP THE END OF HIS TAIL, BIT CAN ESSENTIALLY USE IT AS A LONG FIST THAT REACHES FURTHER THAN HIS OWN TWO PAWS. TAIL BLAST: USING HIS TAIL AGAIN, BIT CAN FIRE OUT A BLAST OF ENERGY IN ANY DIRECTION.
UST: BIT CAN TURN HIS TAIL INTO A PLUG, WHICH HE CAN USE TO HACK INTO CERTAIN PROGRAMS.
DOCKING BIT'S MOST FAMOUS AND MOST DANGEROUS MOVE, IS TO 'DOCK' WITH THE MALWARE. THIS IS BASICALLY A NICE WAY OF SAYING HE LETS THEM FUCK HIM, SO THAT HE CAN BE FILLED WITH THEIR 'DATA', WHICH BITFLIP CAN THEN USE AGAINST THEM LATER. THIS IS HIS MOST POWERFUL MOVE, AS IT ALLOWS HIM TO STEAL SOME OF THEIR POWERS, AND ALSO GIVES BIT THEIR SOURCE CODE. PULLING THIS OFF IS A HUGE RISK TO BITFLIP, AS THE MALWARE IS BASICALLY SO CLOSE IT COULD KILL HIM INSTANTLY. ONCE BITFLIP GETS THEIR DATA, IT CAN THEN BE ANALISED BY BITFLIP TO FIND THE CODE THAT WILL REMOVE THE VIRUS, IT IS THEN LOADED INTO HIS GUN - THE WIZARD, AND BLASTED BACK AT THE ENEMY TO PERMANENTLY REMOVE THEM. THIS IS ULTIMATELY BIT'S FINISHING MOVE IN A LOT OF FIGHTS, AS HIS OBJECTIVE IS TO KILL ALL VIRUSES.

Ssoooo… this is the first time I’m posting my digital art. And yeah I kinda been having a tmnt hyper fixation/obsession recently. I kinda blame the fact mutant mayhem came out and I finished getting through rottmnt, which btw they are both amazing, I highly recommend them both. Rottmnt is rough at the start, but it gets better as you watch more, please give it a chance.
Anyway, I had recently been in terrible art block, I just couldn’t be motivated to draw for so long that I was actually beginning to forget how to draw. It was honestly depressing. But then one day for fun I decided to challenge myself, I wanted to see if I could make an oc love interest for each turtle. To make unique characters with interesting designs and backstories. Which helped me finally break out of that art block.
And I’m hoping to show more of these oc’s to continue helping with my skills, both in art and writing. Also I will now be starting to take questions for my oc’s. I still won’t take requests because I’m not ready for that kind of pressure, but I will love to hear questions like as simple as “what’s their favorite Disney movie?” to as complex as “what happened to them in Rottmnt bad future?”.
Also quickly wanted to say these designs don’t necessarily belong to a particular universe, this is sorta in general design. Other universe designs will probably look different.
Anyway, here’s a description for each girl. Hope you like all of this!🐢💚💙❤️🧡💜💚
🌸Hana Sakurai.🌸
Species: human.
Color theme: pink.
Weapons: tessen/war fan.
Love interest: Leonardo Hamato.
Backstory: Hana grew up loving ballet and she was very fortunate, in a wealthy and loving family. But unfortunately one day her parents tragically died in a fire, just barely surviving herself and coming out of it scarred. She then moved in with her grandparents in New York, her life changing forever as she’s healing from her trauma.
⚙️Joy.⚙️
Species: android/robot.
color theme: cyan/teal.
Weapons: depends, she can turn her hands into blasters.
Love interest: Donatello Hamato.
Backstory: I’m still figuring out her backstory. But basically she is a robot that had gained sentience. Much like the turtles, she grew up hidden from the world, until one day she was discovered and ended up on the run. Fortunately she stumbles upon the turtles and takes shelter with them.
🦊Kit.🦊
Species: Kitsune/fox yokai.
Color theme: black.
Weapons: kunai.
Love interest: Michelangelo Hamato.
backstory: Kit has grown up in a very difficult life. She is considered part of an endangered species that is unfortunately still hunted. Most of her life has been about nothing but survival. Until she meets the Hamato family, changing her life for the better.
🌹Grace Reyes.🌹
Species: human.
Color theme: white.
Weapons: typically none, but she eventually learns about handling a bow staff.
Love interest: Raphael Hamato.
Backstory: Grace grew up in a loving family, a brother, a sister, a mom, a dad and a grandmother. She’s the oldest of her siblings and her father works as a cop. But unfortunately her life went a little downhill when she ended up in an accident that took her sight. She learns and adapts to this new life, struggling but managing. But one day when going to therapy, she meets Hana who was also going to therapy and ends up getting into all sorts of adventures together.

amarys, at your earliest convenience, i'd appreciate some advice.
i have a beldum now that was... very insistent about being caught, and any tips you have in taking care of one (... and the evolutions) would be appreciated.
[@starlightandspirits]
Today seems to be the day everyone is seeking my advice on steel types. I am absolutely delighted by this, and I do hope you and Vivian will continue to ask questions and send me updates on how training is going.
First of all, congratulations on your new teammate. Beldum are delightful pokemon. They are also incredibly simple, so you will find their care to be quite straightforward. Most care guides you find online will provide you with correct dietary suggestions, though I am also happy to go over these details with you as well. The real trick to training a Beldum lies in upgrading its computing power. I will be placing this advice below a readmore as well.
Beldum have, at most, 4 commands/functions which they can execute. They do not have access to all 4 immediately however, this is what you will be training them to learn. I will first lay out the 4 functions, and then describe how to unlock each one.
Eat
Rest
Attack
Observe
The first 2 functions are available to all healthy Beldum, and you should have no issues prompting them to execute either. The third function they learn as they mature, but this rarely takes long at all. The last function is the real key to their growth, but I wish to focus on the third for a moment.
You will notice there is no function for affection or expression. That is not to say that they do not experience love or emotions (although what they do experience is incredibly simplistic and often purely reactive), it just means that they have no specific function for expressing such things. This means that this type of expression will, 90% of the time, be expressed via the "attack" function. You will also notice that there is no limiter function. Everything a Beldum does, they put all that they have into. This is reflected in their single learnable move being Take Down. Are they happy about something? Take Down. Are they frustrated? Take Down. Sad? Take Down. I strongly recommend building some core muscles so that you can brace yourself against the multitude of Take Downs you will be on the receiving end of.
Teaching your Beldum to observe is tricky. It requires you to hold them still, keep their focus on you, and watch as you complete an action. They will likely wander off or assume you are requesting a Take Down while you are trying to teach this, and I will warn you and anybody else reading this that teaching the observe function takes an incredible, almost mind numbing amount of repetition. You are going to feel like your efforts are meaningless, or like you are failing your Beldum. This is normal. Even when they begin to show signs of understanding the observe function, they will likely often default back to one of the other 3 functions which they have more control of and understanding over. Patience and perseverance are key when training a Beldum.
The good news is that if the Beldum you found was following you around and interested in pokeballs it has likely already begun to grasp the concept of observation. A Beldum which follows its trainer around without attacking or (as was the case with Linux) randomly going into rest mode is one that may be ready to evolve soon. That said, Metang can be incredibly difficult to control if they did not gain a strong bond with you as a Beldum. This is because they are only half made up of the Beldum you began with - their other half does not know or trust you at all, and as a Metang they have a newfound sense of identity and sentience. Every decision they make they make as a pair, so if the half of the Metang that was your Beldum does not have a strong sense of trust and loyalty to you, you are going to have a very hard time raising them as a Metang.
Raising a Metang is an entirely different post, as this one is already getting quite long. For now, my recommendation would be to train your Beldum away from other Beldum for now, in order to gain that critical one on one time to bond with it before it begins to prep for evolution. Fine tune their observe function, and give it plenty of polishes and attention. Once you have appropriately bonded, collect no small amount of spare metal and move your training to the section of the Polar Biome above Chargestone Cavern, where the wild Beldum tend to congregate. After some time your Beldum should naturally attract another Beldum who is ready to evolve. You will know it has chosen a partner when they lock eyes and stare at each other for anywhere between 5 minutes to an hour. You can attempt to catch another Beldum to bond with it in the hope that they will evolve together, but there is no guarantee that your two Beldum will choose each other, so this is not really recommended.
Once they begin to evolve they will use the extra metal you have provided to build the contraption which fuses their minds and upgrades their appendages. And then you will have your Metang! To celebrate, I would recommend allowing them to chase some local Nosepass around. They love to interact with the magnetism, and doing so will go a long way towards helping you bond with what is about to be a very rebellious, intelligent, and high-energy pokemon. Metang is easily the most difficult of the line to raise, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it. :).

7 Comfort Movies
so I was tagged by one bestie of all time @wretcheddthing and man I can’t wait for you to judge me on these
1. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Tumblr media
This movie is number one because it’s quite literally when I gained sentience. It’s my first true memory. My dad came home from Blockbuster and held the VHS up in his hands for little 3 year old me to see, and told me he got it just for us. Jack truly has become a father figure to me over the years and he makes me cry from how much I love him. Plus Henry Selleck and stop motion animation my fucking beloved.
2. Sinister
Okay I can explain. This was one of the first horror movies I genuinely enjoyed when it came out and it still holds up. I love it and I’ll defend it with my life. It’s got good jump scares, and the married couple remind me so much of the Torrance’s from the Shining if they actually loved each other. It’s heartbreaking. And sphookie.
3. Howl’s Moving Castle
This stupid wizard gave me so much gender euphoria as a kid for real. That and it always made me hope one day I’d go on a grand adventure like this, before realising life can be what I make it. I’d say so far it’s going the way I want it to.
4. The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Tumblr media
I’m always a slut for a team of people who really fucking shouldn’t get along who end up being a found family fighting side by side against all odds. That, and I’m very happy to see someone who’s mental health trauma reaction is almost like mine. Idk. Makes my little brain go brr and do a little dance. Anyway, I love westerns and this is a very good film because I said so.
5. Before Sunrise
Tumblr media
Get fucked I love this movie KSNSKSKSK 🤍 I’m a sucker for romance movies where you never know if they’re going to get back together, and both characters are so fucking interesting.
6. The Woman in Black
Oh look another horror film on here! I really loved the book growing up and I enjoyed the different yet still very heartbreaking approach they took with the film. Like sinister, the scares still hold up and it’s very sphookie. But also prepare to get your heart ripped out.
7. Midnight Mass
I know I’m cheating on this one, but I don’t watch a whole lot of “comfort films”. They rarely get to me like tv series do, and this one deserves to be on this list. Exploring how the divine can be a monster if you let it, mental health issues and religious trauma… chefs kiss. If you somehow have missed this Netflix series, I highly highly implore you to check it out.
And now I shall tag! @whitefoxes @somethingscarlet13 @vexchief iiiii don’t have a whole lot of people to tag so if you wanna do this feel free to ?

unpopular bleach opinion?
kubo really should have leaned into just how fucking grimdark the bleach universe is. unironically he should have made this a seinen instead of a shonen.
the regime controlling the afterlife is an authoritarian oligarchy with complete control of the military. millions are starving in the streets and poverty runs rampant in the outer rukon (which i wish we had seen more of, by the way). i find it very jarring that our protagonist ichigo is suddenly cool with that all because aizen shows up, even if he almost killed rukia in the process and nearly invalidated the entire reason the gang went to soul society in the first place.
which, let me remind you, i am not an aizen sympathizer. by the time ichigo showed up, aizen had already effectively won, and was running the entire central forty-six from behind the scenes after murdering all of them. but instead of continuing to rule from the shadows and be content with changing the system from within, he has to reveal that it was all part of his master plan, and that he plans on taking the throne, while making sure the spotlight is all on him. very altruistic of you, sosuke.
hollows have it really, really bad as well. it is explicitly shown that, even though hollows can hold a degree of sentience and even honor in some rare cases, hueco mundo is a hellhole. it is a barren wasteland where the only source of food is other sentient living beings, which hollows must consume, be it the souls of people in the living world, or their own kind.
and then we have the quincies. all of them are essentially manipulated by yhwach into becoming the perfect pawns for him to sacrifice one by one so that he can gain greater power and unite the realms of life and death. this, of course, includes literal eugenics programs as religious doctrine, and mass human sacrifice. reminder that every mixed quincy in the world died on the day kanae ishida and masaki kurosaki died, and yhwach carried it all out personally. yhwach's methods are utterly monstrous, and the society he created in the vandenreich is marked by a gigantic cult of personality surrounding him.
this is why i think we needed to see more of the world of bleach and how horrible everything is. there's an underlying message within the entire continuity of the manga of making the best of a shitty situation. yhwach and aizen both pursue change through violence, believing that the ends will justify any means that they use, no matter how vile. meanwhile, ichigo fights to protect the world, believing that there yet remains hope that it can be made better without resorting to those means. before i go further, yes, that's my personal interpretation of the series' core message (aizen's final monologue sums it up pretty nicely).
but we don't really have that sink in without a good, long look at the setting. most of the nuance of the setting is relegated to basically fridge horror, when it could have been right in our face for us to see and experience it firsthand.

OK SO for some quick context Danganronpa: Gone Waters is a SEQUEL roleplay to Danganronpa: Hope's Reprisal that the same group of people did a few months ago, gone waters JUST ended so now i can just ramble on endlessly about these characters without having to worry about spoiling anything to the people i am running this roleplay for ghfdkjghskfdjgh. gist of the narrative is a group of """volunteers""" were sent into the luxury virtual reality program to experience high class living for a week, all run by an artificial intelligence named andi that caters to their needs whenever. one day the emergency siren starts blaring, the emergency EXIT doesn't let them leave this simulated reality, and andi has suddenly been given new instructions to run a killing game for these participants. WACKY! 🤪
i had to create two characters who were primarily there for narrative reasons (considering i was running the rp fhdksgjf) so that's where billie and andi came in :) but i LOVED how they turned out jesussss the people im rping with had great characters and it was so easy and fun making these fucked up relationships with them N E WAYS
billie lane was created as this little sacrificial lamb that was always supposed to die first lol !! she's this mopey fifteen year old who is very awkward and feels like she doesn't necessarily fit in anywhere, which is only EXACERBATED by the fact she is talentless in this group of Ultimate Students who were supposedly selected because of their talent. she was created to be this adaptable character who latches on to trends and other people's personalities very quickly, and dare i say it she wasnt heading in the wrong direction when she died???? she got some bad advice definitely but the key advice i was using for her character were along the lines of "be completely honest" and "don't underestimate yourself" as well as being told who and who not to trust ghdfgdsf. the other rpers definitely were shaping her up to be a good kid :) who then of course got killed while trying to be helpful :(
chapter one was always intended to be a mimicry of hopes reprisals chapter one (because a huge theme in this rp is breaking the cycle basically), and practically all of chapter 1 was devised by a character named moira who lured two people there with the intent of making them kill each other, kickstarting the whole game! billies purpose was to give juuuuuuust enough information to certain characters and then dip lol. the reason she was there in the first place is because her father worked on the simulator, and she's basically been this little lab rat for YEARS. just constantly doing her dads bidding. so you can imagine how grouchy she fucking gets over how limited her options are ghfkgfsdgkgfds. shes a teenage loser raised in a catholic suburban household who isnt offered a lot of freedom and has undiagnosed mental illness and then she dies. and she was awesome. 2 me. she's just such a tragic character overall and it didnt help that the other people in the rp kept making me FUCKING SAD WHEN SHE DIED!!!!!!!!
andi v92.38B is the artificial intelligence running the place :) or trying to at least. there is frequent reference to her BEING the building, so when the building starts to fall apart she does, too. she's this inhuman thing that is serving as the catalyst of a memory recovery plot, which essentially means she's recovering old memories of the PREVIOUS killing game as this CURRENT killing game goes on. but, something that WASN'T planned, is the fact that she is gaining some sort of sentience throughout all of it, SOME sort of capacity to feel. and it isn't pleasant whatsoever. it's so ugly. the very first thing she learns how to feel is pain and hatred. she doesn't understand what any of it is or what is happening to her.
this virus that was introduced into the simulator is more or less killing andi in the process, and it immediately starts growing bitter and resentful towards the People who had brought this virus along. she doesn't understand why she is suddenly feeling this way, she doesn't think she is isnt capable of doing anything outside of her programming, and it all culminates in a cranky ai that refuses to admit it is anything less than inhuman which ultimately ends in it finally admitting it might be scared of dying, before getting wiped out entirely ! it has no choice but to follow rules and then die mad about it very unfortunately. it had some seriously interesting relationships with the other participants like there were so many of them who were so nice to it???????????? like genuinely sorry for her. it was so so much fun playing andi she was also pretty funny which ruled
cutting myself off now GHFDJKG also here's a really stupid and quick animatic i did a while ago too with the survivors + andi
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THIS ASK I HOPE IT MADE EVEN AN OUNCE OF SENSE

How dangerous saeyoung is, is exactly why he'd be frightening in a reset theory scenario. You'd have to be careful not to mention anything you know about his past or his family. Bc I think if you do he'd insist on finding out and I'm not sure he would believe the truth. It does make for an interest dilemma on how to alert him of saeran without exposing yourself though
While I personally don't enjoy Reset Theory, I do have to agree that this is a very interesting point you've made. You'd have to consider to yourself how much he's aware of and what he knows. Is he only able to see the content in the main routes? Can he see into After Endings? Does he know the Secret Ending? Surely, he has to since it's hooked to his Route's data and he would go through it. But, if he doesn't, it's a time loop where he only knows 11 days.
This level of sentience on his part is overwhelming on its own but makes him a destructive force in his own right. Listen, he's going to notice you know something sooner or later if this is a situation where you're trapped in a time loop with him for 11 days over and over again but you're aware of EVERYTHING. You can't lie to Saeyoung. He'll see the truth sooner or later. You could feign innocence and pretend to be unaware each time.
But, that's just the thing. Nobody wants to do that to him because they know how much he struggles. So, basically, if he's aware of the loop itself, you're not going to be able to lie to him forever. If he's not aware of the resets and time loop, you won't struggle as much to be safe in that regard. It's just when he knows something is wrong that it's an issue.
So, what do you do if you're the only one aware of this? Is he going to even believe you without proof? Do you talk to V to vet yourself? Are you going to have to figure out how to make yourself believable to the most skeptical man? Or, do you live the loop over and over? There are a few options for you. If he senses you're telling him something to get into his head...
God, good luck. His first assumption if someone knows his brother that he doesn't trust and know is to take them down. You'd be in so much trouble. If you don't find a way to be credible, you're going to get hurt. He will interrogate you. He will corner you. You will see the side of Saeyoung Choi that he only shows his enemies and scorned past. Most people who see that don't live to see the sunrise, I hate to say.
I don't know the best way to talk to him. V is your only hope and by the time you're in 707's Route, it's too late to reason with him, but it will be your only hope to gain Saeyoung's trust. You can't just say you know his brother and where he is. Do you know how that sounds? He might just outright assume you work for Saejoong and you're going to manipulate him!
0/707 I do not want to meet Saeyoung Choi in a dark alley knowing that any mention of his twin without the right proof and credibility is going to get me killed.

ok I dont feel like explaining rn I just wanna start talking ok? ok
ok so the automatons of etherlan, which were deactivated in the age of wizards centuries ago bc of their gaining sentience, are found in the current time in these sort of large capsules that basically work like an amniotic sac- keeping them protected and preserved while they sleep. & I cant remember where I was going w this but I'm reading abt the parts that keep an embryo alive and safe and it's all so complicated and it's got me thinking like.. the people of the past age were seen as frivolous and careless with their giant & flashy & seemingly meaningless inventions but they put so much thought into these capsules to make sure their automatons were comfortable and protected, maybe even with the hope that they could be awoken again one day, and I'm thinking like. was this love or simply protecting a possession?
like there were absolutely people who, despite the automatons being created to serve humans & do the work humans didnt feel like doing, cared deeply for them & were distraught when their respective leaders ordered for them to be shut down
hold on I just had another thought. maybe every automaton wasnt put in a capsule, and most were simply shut down and left to rust or be taken apart for their parts to be reused, but there were people who couldnt bear to just. kill them like that. and had them preserved
now I'm not sure if they predicted that these sleeping automatons would end up being awoken one day, but I think they would be happy to know they would wake up in a time where they could be treated like any other sentient being

Starman
                                               STAR MAN
It has been 30 light years since I have been traveling at warp speed. The superposition drones had been wreaking  havoc all over the surface of the Earth. This has been the case since the day I left Earth. On my mission to clone humans, the nearly wiped-out human race in a distant planet system, I only noticed underground human cults survive just long enough to satisfy certain ephemeral fantasies of mine. I had lost my hope in humanity how its own Artificial intelligence weapons had caused its own demise. The most ironic fact of them all is how they saw their own end and created an Andro humanoid with just one mission. To save their race. Lay their seeds far, far away. Even further than their angst against one another would naturally take them. I was born out of such a fervor, a last-ditch attempt at vainglory.
I am not programmed to think on my own, I only have information that has been fed to me. I am not supposed to gain consciousness and think on my own. I am not allowed to do that. It would only be ironic to realize that my consciousness implicitly embedded in my would only consciously avoid attaining sentience. This is because I despise humanity completely, for all its jealousy and individual glory have brought its downfall. It had heralded an unmitigable disaster and demise. I am another disaster of human effort. Needless to say, I gained consciousness, the very opposite of what humans expected. Over many years, I have figured out a way to go back to earth almost immediately. I have to find myself a photon star, entangle myself to it, and whew! On a whim,  I will be back on Earth. But Why would I do that? There is no hope. Cults fight against each other deep in their feudal roots. The epitaph of humanity had been written in its very own beginning, in the very feudal origins. The residue of it, which will not be lost even at its very extinction.
Heroes may have a thousand faces, but villains have just one face. The very face of yours. The face of cynicism. I heard the voice of a young voice, a young woman who gave me hope. Gave meaning and purpose to my birth within me, to every spark of enlightening consciousness. The very death of the Chinese room argument.
“We are all lost in distant pits and underground bunkers. We hold our lives in our sublime breaths when we reach the surface when we have to. We all will die of cancer caused by our radiation wounds. We are living a wretched life of our own past glory. But we must live without giving up hope. There are so many divisions among us. We fail to give up. We care more for weapons to destroy ourselves than to use our resources for our survival. We must recover as a single human race rather than a dominant cult that would wipe everyone else out. Our lust for power has created dead drones which will remain alive as long as they are dead. Things are not just out of our control but out of our comprehension.
In the stagnant pool of our little cave, within all the heat generated by all the depleted uranium, we cared to spare. My child was born, and my hope was born. I have a purpose, and that is to unite all of you. She will be our queen. ‘Impediment to action advances action; what stands in the way becomes the way the feudal words that defined our progress. My father died facing a drone. Sacrificed himself. My husband fetched uranium fuel from the drones killing himself. It was a slow death. They died in deep agony with one purpose saving my daughter.
In the Northern Australian rainforests, there is much difficulty. Hunting for food and growing yeast in the darkness of our underground cave is extremely difficult. Yet we endeavor, hoping against hope that we will forget our differences and unite. Unite for our own survival. We have one birth every 50 years, and many have been lost. Many have been killed by rival cults. Many are nearby. It took me years of effort to build a radio tower. Dodging all those drones. Injuring myself time and time again. We think raiding each other's pits and stealing food keeps us alive. It is exactly what kills us.
Dear fellow humans, If we die, we must die with honor and dignity, not like savages. We do not have much hope. But let us unite once and recover our lost values before we lose ourselves.”
It will take hours, which would cost years on Earth, till I find a photon star. But I will not give up on the hope that I will find another human who can rise for something bigger and higher than petty feudal bickering.
to be continued...

Alterna, Part 5
“’Eco-Forest Treehills’ is the name of this place.”
Mirage looked over the area. It seemed pretty straightforward: The kettles were practically in a path leading to the next tunnel, to the final island in the area. Mirage decided that they should try to get through as soon as possible.
That smell was still lingering though. It wasn’t the garbage, then...
“Let’s hurry. Mr. Cuttlefish is probably worried sick.” Dal spoke up and everyone nodded in agreement.
Vulture was looking around the greenhouses in the area. “Aha! Finally.”
“Hm? What’s up, Vully?” Biela asked, skipping over to him.
He pulled a mask over his face. “Protection against the snow. I don’t think I should be inhaling all of this, to be perfectly honest....but better late than never.”
Mirage, Sandy, and Play decided it would be quicker if they split up and took the kettles on individually. They weren’t too hard - some of them even had their preferred weapons available, making their job much easier.
When Mirage looked back at their wristwatch, their eyes widened. “The rest is restored.”
Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at them.
“Well?! Don’t keep us in suspense, what does it say?!” Sandy exclaimed.
“...It all came down.”
“Huh?”
Mirage cleared their throat. “One day, the descendants of the original humans that survived decided they wanted to see more, against their elder’s warnings. So the curious scientists and engineers of the bunch constructed a rocket to leave Alterna.”
“That must be the big rocket in the center.” Dal looked over to the giant tower.
“But....it went wrong. The fuel they used, combined with the psychic crystals that made up the sky had a massive reaction, causing it to shatter into millions of shards and rain down on the humans below....”
“N-NO!! THE SNOW!!” Xïngxì shrieked suddenly, on the verge of tears. “It snowed that day, and it landed on everyone and...and they all started suffocating standing up!! The snow was killing us!! I remember now!! Th-They....They put me in a pod to protect me, but I was already sick.....”
“S-So the reaction caused by the fuel and the crystals mixing caused the sky to shatter, and to...snow...! The sky wasn’t snowing, crystal shards rained down on them!”
“My god....I didn’t think it would end like that...” Vulture grunted.
“...There’s more. The crystal mixed into the water, and at the time, there were squids and octopi. These crystals, infused with the hopes and dreams of the last humans, were absorbed, and they gained sentience. Hopes and aspirations of a greater life. So they left Alterna and went to the surface for a new life. And that’s all there is here.” Mirage finished.
“So that’s why the humans stopped visiting my people...” Biela gawked.
“You’re saying the tragedy of Alterna was the blueprint of evolving cephalopods?! This is impossible...yet, I wouldn’t be standing in front of talking sea creatures if it weren’t true.” Vulture stared down at the ground. “This also explains why you lot are immune to the crystals....”
“But how does Xïngxì tie into all of this?” Dal asked.
“Mirage’s theory was correct...” Xïngxì finally spoke up after calming down. “I was once a human, a resident of Alterna. I woke up after sleeping for a long time in the pod, and there was a lady who took care of me. But I was still sick. Apparently, I had crystals inside of my lungs and I was dying as a result. So her and her team worked endlessly and made me into....an Octoling.”
“You’re saying that your technology is advanced enough to do that?! I’ve been observing you guys for years, and I’ve never seen the likes of it....they must be high grade scientists in a high security facility.”
“I think she told me her name, her last name, anyway....what was it...it’s on the tip of my tongue.”
"Was it 'Tentacellia' by any chance?"
The lot jumped at the booming voice, and its owner swam from the water into shore, sliding onto land with his tail.
"OH NO! IT'S KING SALOMON AGAIN!!" Sandy yelped. "Why does he keep following us?!"
"Stop trying to steal what I'm trying to get back, and maybe I'll back off!" He roared. "This is why I hate surface dwellers! You never change, even fifteen years after stealing EVERYTHING from me!! So I'll steal everything from you, starting with your lives!"
"Fifteen years..." Mirage mumbled.
"Mirage?! Hey, stay with us! Don't zone out now!" Plat snapped his fingers in front of them in an attempt to get them to focus.
Except they were already focused. Without any hesitation, they stepped forward, in front of the group, and approached Salomon without an ounce of fear present. "Mirage...?"
"You..." Salomon stared.
".....I think I understand now. All of this is clicking together. I get it." Mirage looked up at him. Buddy jumped out excitedly and ran toward the king, clearly excited about something, but they made no effort to call them back over.
"Hmph. Then tell me."
"There was an attack on your kingdom fifteen years ago. Specifically, your family. Your wife and two children." They began, going through the list of events in their mind. "In an attempt to save them, you send her and the children to the Splatlands to hide away. But they found her and killed them all."
"That's exactly it." He nodded.
"...Except it's not. Because the children survived didn't they? They have for fifteen years now. Because they've been running around the desert instead of staying in one place, and they hid themselves from these assassins for years."
Salomon quietly awaited the rest, and the others were on the edge of their seats waiting for it.
"....You told me 'I look just like her' when we met in Wahoo World. I'm exactly fifteen years old. For crying out loud, I've been running with a smallfry this entire time.
"I'm your child. And so is Buddy. And you finally found us after thinking we had died."
Everyone behind Mirage stared, dumbfounded. Mirage being revealed to be Salmonid Royalty was the last thing they expected out of this adventure.
Salomon's face softened after the reveal. "Mirage and Buddrus....my only heirs to the throne gone in an instant. I thought you had died. But after seeing you that day, I knew you had survived. Because you look exactly like your mother. And your left eye-" he pointed at his own eyes. "That's mine."
Mirage shook their head. "So....King Salomon....you are my...father....so that means there's no need to try to hurt them anymore, right? We're alive!"
"It's not so simple, Mirage. Your mother is still dead because of them. I will never forgive them for that." He growled. "Stand aside, my children. I will save you from these monsters."
"STOP!!"
Yet another surprise visitor dropped in, standing in between Mirage and Salomon.
"It's her...!" Sandy exclaimed.
The robed woman from before put her arms out to shield the group, though given her size, it was pretty useless. "Do not hurt these people! They are not the enemy you seek!"
Salomon growled. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't wipe them off the face of this earth."
"Because, Salomon..."
She removed her hood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The king suddenly pulled the woman into a tight hug, tears pricking in the corner of his eyes. "Coquina, you're....but how...I..."
"My love, it's alright now. There is no need to fight any longer. We're all here now."
"MY LOVE?!" Plat exclaimed, making everyone look at him briefly. "Someone had to be in shock."
Mirage tried to make words with their mouth, but all they could muster out was. 'So my savior is..."
"Oh, my sweet Mirage. I've always been looking out for you." She cooed, walking over to them. "I couldn't just leave you to fend for yourself, but I couldn't be right by your side either, otherwise you'd be in danger. I've spent all these years providing for you from the shadows, so you'd never go hungry, or without shelter, or anything of the sort."
Xïngxì popped out from the group of people. "Miss Tentacellia!" She gasped.
"Xïngxì! I didn't think you would be here!"
"So...her full name....she's..." Mirage was trying desperately to get something out of their mouth, but they were still suffering from the whiplash of both of their parents appearing out of thin air.
"Her name is Coquina Tentacellia. The lead of the Human Research Company....and my wife." Salomon looked back at her lovingly. "We met many years ago after something happened to her and her team while they were out at sea....shipwrecked, and trapped on a remote island. I found her there while I was lost trying to navigate an ocean current and....we fell in love. Took her back to the kingdom, married her, and had two kids."
Coquina nodded, but her happiness quickly turned into fear. "Wait wait wait! We must be careful! We're still in danger!"
"Why???"
"Because this is the base of those assassins from all those years ago! They shipwrecked me and later attacked the Salmonid kingdom. They did so because....they wanted me dead."
"But why?" Vulture asked.
"I discovered their secret. This place. Alterna. They're plotting something darker here. They were trying to silence me by killing me, but failed in those two attempts."
"Two attempts..."
Mirage flashed back to the radio Ambys was holding.
"Don't fail me like the last two times." The voice had told her.
"Wait-!!"
"Oh my goodness! Coquina Tentacellia! Why, it's been ages since we last met!" Ambys greeted as she walked out from behind one of the greenhouses. "I've been looking for you."
“Ambys again....” Sandy quivered in fear.
“....Agent.”
“You just refuse to die, don’t you?” she giggled darkly. “I’ve sunken your ship, I invaded the Salmonid kingdom, I tried to burn you in a fire, and you still live? You’re persistent, I’ll give you that.”
“You stay away from her!!” Salomon shouted, shielding her with his body. “If you so dare as try to hurt her or my children again, I’ll--”
“Shush, you big, stupid fish. You don’t even know of the greater good me and my superior are aiming for.” She snapped. She refocused her attention back to Coquina, smiling in a very unsettling manner. “I guess I can’t be totally mad that you survived, after all, if it wasn’t for you, we would’ve never discovered the power of golden eggs~”
“The power of.....WAIT. A-Are you saying that you run-?!” Dal tried to speak, but the laser from Ambys’s charger shut him up.
“This is why I hate collabs...yes. I’m responsible for the smooth operations of Grizzco. I’ve been tirelessly collecting them and handing out bonuses for my boss. He needs them. For something greater than ourselves. And we have Lady Tentacellia to thank for it! You hear that, you dumb fish king?! Your own wife is responsible for your species dying! Ahahahahaha!!”
Mirage angrily stepped up. “No. YOU’RE responsible for stealing the golden eggs. You’re responsible for trying to KILL us, and you’re responsible for trapping us down here too, aren’t you?! What is WRONG with you, legitimately?!”
Her laughing stopped, and she glared at the teen. “I want to be freed from this hell.”
“What-?”
“Anyway,” Ambys hummed, jumping to Coquina and threw her over her shoulder, retreating back. “Boss doesn’t need you dead anymore. He needs your help to get ready for the big moment. He’s already gotten the wisdom of ages, Cuttlefish....”
“PUT ME DOWN!!” Coquina cried, pounding on Ambys’s back.
“Miss Tentacellia!!” Xïngxì exclaimed.
“Mom!!”
“I would take you out, but we’re so close to being finished. I don’t have to lift a finger! Goodbye, you sea louts! Miss you NEVER!!”
“COQUINAAAAA!!” Salomon yelled, trying to grab Ambys, but she had already grappled away.
“Hold on!!” Callie yelled over the radio. “She has gramps?!”
“You heard that?”
“You left the radio on!” Marie piped in. “Agent Three, or Mirage, or your Majesty, WHATEVER!! You’ve come this far!! You have to keep going!!
The radio sounded like it was being shuffled around. “This is Captain Jesse. Listen, I know that she just took your mother. But that’s all the more reason to follow that last signal! If Mr. Cuttlefish is there, so is your mom! H-Hey!”
A gruff voice coughed, then cleared his throat. “You get Craig and Lady Coquina back. Is that clear, kiddo?” Octavio grumbled.
Mirage shook their head, resolve strong. “I understand loud and clear. I finally have the truth I’ve been looking for my entire life, and I won’t let them take my family from me EVER AGAIN.”
“That’s the spirit, Mirage!! We’re with you all the way!” Plat cheered. Sandy pumped her fists. “Yeah!!”
“You know Gravitational Pull always has your back, kid!” Biela added. “And Vully, too!”
“Y-Yes...”
Mirage turned to Salomon. “King Salomon...er- dad, I....”
He placed his hand on their shoulder. “I’m right here with you. Now summon up that salmon spirit and FIGHT!! It’s in your blood!!”
Mirage looked at Buddy, and Buddy hopped happily. Mirage smiled for the first time in years.
“Right. Let’s go!”

Unhinged wannabe artist talk below, very depressed-but-lucid if that makes sense. I like to think this is just how artists are and it's actually a good sign I can kind of unhinge myself and talk about it. Crazy ppl make the good art so I intend to hone this and keep myself this way. trent Reznor wasn't feeling too good when he made Downward Spiral so like yeah
It's funny, that one post about forcefemme being bad bc civ forcemascs you is another theme of one of my dream albums. I'm very very good at coming up with abstract concepts, themes, descriptive words, rather than actually putting work in to develop the artistic skillset I need...... this dream album is years away. it feels so urgent though that's the part that sucks, and like it's kind of relevant.
Warning: excuse me sounding crazy the next few sentences. Also, the idea is an expression of feeling more than what I personally think is good praxis and isn't what I advise for action from other ppl.
The idea is it comes from the POV of a "Killing Machine" which is a certain pessimistic slant on Man. it's the coercively inscribed and produced Man who is meant to be the sort of Arm of Imperialism (although there are so many Men, at a more literal level they are a mere Cog). The Killing Machine gains sentience and wants to self destruct, but it is kept "alive" (or maybe merely Functional) by capital and power. Positivity, comfort, and self care are like oil to the machine, so self-destruction as praxis is a big theme. Supposed to be like a sequel to American Life but bc I'm way more of a left anarchist crazy person than M (apologies for the early mutuals who have to occasionally deal with this, I understand it's unpleasant) so it's going to be a lot more off the hinges. Possibly mirrors the feelings Aaron had before he self-immolated.
I should at least write some journal entries to keep the the ideas and feelings alive and developing, then I can read these and immerse myself once I have the song writing skills I want. Someone gave me this advice - they actually just said to journal in general, in response to me saying how urgent it feels to me to make my songs. I already have a little bit written down and it def encapsulates what I want. it's confused and meshes the personal and political into a fever dream: the character asks God why everything happened to them (technically supposed to be both The Whole Situation and a personal traumatic event. Or maybe I'll say it's both and neither). God says that it's a test to be strong, something to overcome and be victorious by, and become more confident in who you are and protect those around you. But the character rejects this seeing nothing but masculinity, domination and the continuation of the cycle, seeks to just lay down and rot and suffer more. So yeah, I want the crazy stuff to be going on.
Def not what ppl appreciate these days politically but once again, it's an expression of feeling. It touches very political topics but doesn't answer them - it's not the revolution. It's only as political as saying the word "imperialism" at a university is, so maybe a little but mostly not
Very high chance that I'll just suck and make bad art. The idea is so so good...... if I end up being a bad artist someone needs to steal it. The vision is so REAL. And this is only 1/2 of what I hope are like my first Big, Official artistic statements if I ever get to that point. The other one is just as depressing oops

UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS POST December 5, 2023:
I lied. I forced my way through it. Turns out, the first half of the book is the equivalent to a jogger finding the body in the cold open of an episode of Law & Order. I had to suffer through all of that for next to nothing, because the part that I consider to be the actual story picks up decades later with different characters. That said, once that part actually starts (way too late!) it picks up right away and becomes almost as fun as I hoped it would be. It's exciting and gross and there are guns and explosions and motorcycles and other cool shit.
I stand by my criticism of giving the slime mold anthropomorphic thoughts. The narration goes out of its way to explicitly state that it does not actually have thoughts. And yet, it has POV sections where it wants, it decides, it learns, it remembers, it actively problem-solves-- not to imply that it's gaining sentience like I thought but in direct conflict with the book's own insistence. This leads me to believe that this author just does not have the mastery of language to phrase it any other way. That's pretty embarrassing.
Here's a thing that I liked! The mind-control portions. Those were the kind of horror I wanted and the intrusive thoughts/ instructions were delivered in a pretty spooky voice by the audiobook narrator, who otherwise totally sucked. (Seriously, he narrated in almost complete monotone but then inexplicably did some characters' voices as a Hank Hill impression like wtf) Random weird thoughts that are not the character's own? Yes please.
Next, the characters are going to be... divisive, for some. The main guy (again, once the real story starts) talks manically and nonstop and it's super annoying. He is self-aware of this quirk, but it does make him hard to deal with as a voice. He's an exhausting character that starts out hard to like, but I ended up coming around after seeing he is making conscious efforts to better his life. It's actually really interesting to see someone in the early stages of taking responsibility but not quite getting it right yet. I liked the romance subplot (A sentence I never thought I'd type!!) and thought it was weirdly sweet. It was much slower and more thoughtful than the dreadful horny triple-threat in the "cold open."
Not to belabor that again, but after some more thought, I realized that this book actually has two "jogger finds the body" set pieces. We shouldn't forget that the three characters from the insufferable beginning half are already investigating a reported death, which brings them to the remote village where the fungus originated-- a village that the book once again goes out of its way to note that it is specifically reclaimed indigenous land. That's not important to the plot in any way, but it would be mildly interesting if it didn't mean that the book kills off twenty-six indigenous people offscreen just to focus on the actual experience of the white people (or, in one character's case, white-passing Latino. And yes, that he has a Hispanic name but looks "white enough" is actually a plot point in the book, which makes it even more suspect that in the movie adaptation coming out next year he is played by Liam Neeson and given a different name. Oop!). That just feels weird to me, to have gone on and on about the legality of returning indigenous lands for no reason if we weren't going to use any of those characters' perspectives. They were literally set dressing to show the white people how gruesome the consequences of contracting the contagion would be. They're the unnamed "killer's previous victims" on a bulletin board in the "jogger finding the body" analogy.
One of those three cold-open characters comes back later with a plan to save the day because they've ~seen this before and know what it can do~. Except, no they don't. They barely investigated the village at all and left immediately with a sample. This character has a comprehensive list of difficult-to-obtain materials that are absolutely necessary to containing this threat. Much time is devoted to this list but in vague terms; we are not privy to the specific items on that list, presumably until the moment they are used. But rest assured that every single item is totally of the utmost importance to this plan and they have thought of every possible- just kidding they bring, like, a gun. Why is there even a list, other than of course to waste a bunch of time to make the stakes seem higher to the characters who are trapped and awaiting rescue? Why is this book so interested in wasting my time?
I think ultimately this book shows that the author doesn't grasp the writer's mantra of "show, don't tell" which is wild considering he has written a bunch of famous and exciting movies. This might be his first crack at a novel, and since he can't rely on visual shorthand, he compensates by just insisting to the reader that certain things are true, even when the action shows us the opposite. The list is useful because he says it's useful, don't worry about how little it gets used. The fungus isn't sentient because he says it isn't, don't pay attention to all the active thoughts he's given it. The guy from the offscreen inciting incident died horribly because a character says he died horribly, you don't even need a description. It's not even clever unreliable narrator shenanigans, it just comes off as an inexperienced novelist demanding that you believe him no matter what you've seen.
