lawliet: autism (asd)

when he was little, he refused to wear socks because he hated the way they seams felt on his feet. eventually watari gave up on trying to make him wear them and just had him wear shoes that didn't require them — that was until lawliet realized the benefit to not wearing shoes and just started going barefoot.

along with that, he used to never wear jeans as a child because they were too tight and uncomfortable. the same thing goes for long sleeves. this meant he typically wore sweatpants and loose tanktops until he realized he can simply start wearing oversized clothing.

sweets are his safe foods. he typically goes for small candies like m&ms when he's feeling more picky, but he generally enjoys anything ranging from cake to pastries. he also really likes milkshakes and the occasional smoothie.

since he can't read tones, he doesn't always take people's sarcasm as a joke if he's unfamiliar with them. however, that doesn't stop him from having a very sarcastic and dry sense of humor himself. unfortunately, most people don't realize he's also joking due to his monotone voice and lack of facial expressions.

lawliet struggles with empathy. he often finds it hard to sympathize with people who he feels are making a bad decisions. he values logic over emotional reasoning and gets annoyed when people don't see things the same way as him. he’s willing to make extreme decisions and take an ends-justify-the-means approach. he also doesn't see the appeal in formalities and views them as a waste of time. this can lead to him being very brunt and straight to the point, not bothering to mince his words. it often comes across as rude, especially if it's to someone he sees as being less than him.

light: obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd)

he always has to have things a very specific way. not exactly tidy — although he hates messes and being unorganized — but simply "his way." otherwise, he constantly feels off and uncomfortable.

he prefers to work alone because of this. group projects were always a nightmare for him. not only did he want his work area to be organized a specific way, but any essay or project he worked on also had to follow a specific order. along with that, he has to began his work in calculated steps or he'd grow too irritated and frustrated.

his mother quickly learned when he was younger that none of his food could touch or he wouldn't eat dinner. that, and he had to eat each section in order or he didn't feel full.

he'd end up conveniencing himself that if he didn't fill out all the questions on a test in the correct order then he'd end up failing, as well as other thing such as, "if i don't turn off the stove in this specific way, the house is gonna burn down." these thoughts never came across or irrational to him. even when he didn't always fully believe them, he still had a voice in the back of his head telling him he was wrong. therefore, he always went along with his specific order.

he'd spiral with his thoughts a lot. if he shook someone's hand after meeting them, he'd tune out their introduction and think about what their hand has touched, when the last time they washed their hand was, when he'd be able to wash his hand. it go to the point where he'd eventually just stop touching people in general, and grew annoyed when they touched him.

matt: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd)

despite ranking at number three at the orphanage, there's actually a very big gap between near and mello's intelligence compared to matt's. he's smart, definitely, but he's not actually a genius like the other two. this caused matt to feel a great divide between himself and the other two, and he tried his best to hole up in his room and study to become like them, but it ultimately left him burnt out.

after that, matt stopped applying himself and his grades began tanking. watari realized this was a result of his unmotivation and not actual stupidity, though, so he allowed matt to keep his place as third.

matt began suffering from the pressure and anxiety he felt in trying to become one of L's successors, and during one of his walks outside the orphanage, he came across a group of people offering him a cigarette to help him chill out. matt was smart enough to know it was a bad decision, but he was also depressed and decided to take it up to help calm his nerves.

matt's hyperfixations revolve around technology. after becoming obsessed with video games, he eventually decided to learn about how people code them which lead him into being interested in coding and hacking.

he's mostly unmedicated for his adhd, though he does find a way to get adderall when he feels like it. because of his, he's extremely prone to boredom and is more than likely to give up on a specific tasks to play games instead.

he's overall very aimless due to his boredom and burnt out feelings towards bettering himself. he fills his time with exciting things like drag races and drugs, but other than that he's very shut and reclusive and unlikely to let someone pull him away from his games unless they're offering something more fun to do.

he constantly is seeking out stimulation. there's always music blasting from his headphones while he games or a radio playing while he drives.

mello: autism (asd)

his tone is typically very flat, which causes confusion when people are trying to tell his emotions. along with that, he's not very expressive physically unless mad or manic.

he gets irritated very easily when people fail to understand whether or not he's being serious or not, or if they misinterpret him. he knows deep down that it's not their fault, but he hates being reminded of how he's the problem.

he constantly feels alienated from others. he was never able to make friends in the orphanage. he always started off well, but was never able to maintain connection with others. because of this, he isolates himself from just about everyone — only really keeping in contact with lawliet, near, and matt when he's older.

he's very defensive and possessive of his interests. he doesn't like when other people dislike them, but he hates when they seem to like them a lot. he's like this with friends as well, mostly when he was younger. he also got jealous when matt hung out with other kids instead of him, especially since he already struggled to keep friends so he was worried about ruining their friendship and being abandoned.

he wished he wasn't autistic when he was younger. of course, he was nervous about what other people thought about him, but his issues typically went back to him hating how difficult everything was for him — communicating, making connections, feeling like he belonged. no matter what he did, it always felt like the wrong choice; no matter where he went, he didn't belong.

unlike many other autistic people, he doesn't hate loud noises. in fact, a majority of the music he enjoys revolves around loud sounds. however, he has to be in the right mood to listen to them. he doesn't just put music on whenever, he has to want to actively listen to it in order to stand it. similarly, he can't have anything on in the background if he's trying to get work done. his surroundings are either completely silent or shaking pictures off the wall loud.

misa: (adhd)

throughout school, misa struggled with the material more than others. she had a very short attention span and often got in trouble for daydreaming instead of focusing. this is what caused her to start becoming overly insecure about her smarts and try and make up for it by being pretty and funny.

most her hyperfixations fall into stereotypical feminine traits, such as makeup and fashion.

when her fans found out she had adhd, she played into the stereotypes and just used it to make herself seem overly bubbly and dumb as she knew it would help her as an idol. however, due to this many people started regarding her as a moron with no ideas of substance, which added to her insecurities regarding her intelligence. whenever she did try to showcase herself and her ideas, she was typically laughed at and most people thought she was joking.

since japan has very strict drug laws, she's unmedicated and her symptoms are very severe; specifically her forgetfulness, excitability, fidgeting, hyperactivity, impulsivity, irritability, lack of restraint, and persistent repetition of words or actions. she's also very prone to mood swings when provoked.

near: autism (asd) & dyspraxia

her special interests are toys. she's not very picky and likes things that range from puzzles to toy robots, but she does favor dolls. she especially likes ones that come with television shows such as ever after high, equestria girls, monster high, and my little pony. she's not ashamed of her more childlike interests either, as she grew up around solely autistic people and was never made to feel embarrassed.

near has always preferred to play by herself as a child as she often felt like other people couldn't understand how exactly her little storylines played out in her head and it would be too much work explaining them when she could just play alone. she also just generally prefers not to socialize with others unless it comes down to those she is extremely close with, such as lawliet, matt, and especially mello.

she struggles a lot when it comes to social cues. she doesn't adjust her demeanor accordingly when it comes to certain situations, which makes her come across as uncaring. pair that with her inability to make eyecontact or even bother to face someone when they're talking to her, and she appears to be very uncaring most of the time.

her main stim is twirling her hair.

she has an insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, and ritualized patterns. she usually only wears all white, and is very highly organized when it comes to her personal space and belongings. all her toys are organized by what type they are and then what color. she also prefers to stick to her comfort zone and doesn't typically leave the orphanage unless it's absolutely necessary.

near is very selective when it comes to which textures she's willing to deal with. she only wears soft clothing like pajamas, and doesn't bother wearing shoes with her socks. she also typically likes warm and soft foods, such as oatmeal or rice.

she needs to feel stimulated at all times, so she typically watches something while she eats and listens to music when she's going to bed. she'll also often have one of her shows on in the background while playing with her toys or will put on fitting music for whatever adventure she's making her toys go on.

she's not very good at taking care of herself on her own, as she'll prioritize her hobbies over things like eating and showing. she's also easily stressed and unmotivated when it comes to things she doesn't like doing, and needs someone else to help her with things such as arranging doctor appointments and flights.

she also prefers to sit on the floor and crawl between spaces rather than walking around due to her dyspraxia. when she's feeling particularly weak, she uses a wheelchair and has either gevanni, lawliet, or mello push her around depending on where she is or who she's with.

I’m going here to ask all these question with this fanfiction I wrote that is going to give a proper and a writing you guys never seen about Bernadette Cavendish the mother of Diana and her wife

Things here are going to change from the canon a little but well this is fanfiction and this is what fanfiction stand for

“Wait Wife? How? Why?”

Yeah Wife, by magic they made their kid and I’m going to explain why I choose a woman to be Bernadette’s wife rather than a dad

Simply, because feels generic and shallow to just simply give Bernadette a generic husband, this wouldn’t give a better writing to Bernadette as if was with another girl, Bernadette would simply marry or just have Diana with a generic man #1 and then one day he will die, leave her, or even plan to kill her

Plus the great majority of the fandom shipps Diakko, and they never think about the whole dilemma around Diana, by Akko’s side is easier she just need to fell in love with Diana and then yay they are together. But What about Diana’s side? Have you guys ever think that she’s an aristocrat (I’m not assumpting that aristocrats are LGBTphobes), she needs to keep a reputation there, a image and even she needs to have kids in order to keep her lineage being the one who will keep the head. So by Diana’s side things are harder, the reputation side she just can be simply strong and say openly that she’s a lesbian and everyone needs to accept that because we are in modern days but things get complicated about having kids

And pretty much the fanarts about a Diakko kid the children is always 100% biological daughter of Diana and Akko, so an artificial insemination by a donator is out of question (unless the donator is someone from the family who looks like them). Trans headcanon? That’s a pretty cool concept I think, tbh I love it, but to that work Diana or Akko wherever is gonna be Trans need to froze their sperm before the HRT if they want to have kids in the future, because the HRT make person infertile after a while. So magic? Well this is a another cool concept if both are cis so a fertility spell enters here, but how this is going to work? Leave that to the writers to do it. This is the idea I pick up with the fertility stone

This is why I come into the idea of giving Diana two mothers rather than a generic dad, because with that possibility Diana would get into the conclusion that a fertility spell is real with her at the first not actually believing it, until she finds out that her father was actually an another mother and she used the fertility stone with Bernadette

See how cool is that? And I’m not even starting to tell about Diana’s mom deeply, because this isn’t a story that takes place in the modern days but in the past

This is going to focus on Diana’s mothers

Bernadette Cavendish (the one everyone knows) and Laura McLaren (better than the generic Diana’s father OC)

Just to enter into the context of this story, the Cavendish family was into a time where they are even more close minded than today, on a time where Diana’s grandmother was alive and she’s a very conservative person, she was LGBTphobe AF not allowing their two daughters being other sexuality rather than straight, she controlled a lot of Bernadette’s life and even pressure her to be perfect

So times there was even worse for her than what is today. Bernadette’s mother was someone who preserve for the traditions and the image of the Cavendish family and this is where Daryl’s hatred among Diana enters

“What? But Diana wasn’t even born”

Because the hate wasn’t with Diana, but at Bernadette, Daryl hated Bernadette

“But in the anime has shown that Daryl had some feelings with her sister”

Really? I’ve only seen her screwing up with Bernadette will to keep the traditions of the family and she simply sell everything, I’ve seen her pretty much being very mean to Diana, not even taking care of her niece, plus when Bernadette was alive she pretty much was bullying Diana for liking Shiny Chariot

Come on the twins are less worse because they are kids but Daryl was a grown ass mother with two kids, she was simply bullying her niece for nothing when Bernadette was still alive in the canon

So this is how I come that Daryl is envy of Bernadette and she in reality hates her and I pretty much think that she’s even responsible for her sister death

Because of power, money and the wish to be the head of the family, Daryl pretty much has shown that in the anime and even her redemption was more like “Yeah you didn’t leave me to die so I’m in debt with you” (If LWA was going to have a season 2 she could pretty much fit into a villain and even if LWA didn’t have, Daryl was more Villainous than Croix ever was)

This envy among Daryl was something that started since she and Bernadette were kids, because their mother prioritize all the attention to the eldest daughter, the eldest daughter should be the one who will deserve to be the head and all the attention, but this is how their mother think is right to do and because of that Daryl starts to hate Bernadette’s side, plus that she was educated into a different way, she got more “evil” and greedy with the influence of her great aunts that think like that, while Bernadette was educated to be someone more “nice” and preserve the traditions of the family, she was even a little influenced by her grandma that actually believes into the fertility stone legend, where all the family think that’s bullshit

Bernadette needs to improve herself as a person to overcome all that weight over her, to have her own personality and freedom, because she didn’t have any freedom on her residence, until she enters on Luna Nova and meet someone called Laura McLaren

Laura is the complete opposite of Bernadette with her family, the McLaren family was like the Cavendish but from Ireland, they are rich too, but they prefer to live on a more simple big house, rather than a big ass castle because is more cheaper to maintain, Laura’s family is open minded AF they already knew about the fertility stone because the matriarch of the family is a 88 years old trans lesbian who used the fertility stone back then, so they are pretty much very fine with LGBT thing. Laura is openly a lesbian and she’s free to be herself, even tho she was most of the time trained with magic to become a powerful witch, so that makes her a strong ass witch that she didn’t even need to study in Luna Nova, but she’s there just for the grade

Laura was going to show to Bernadette how’s the freedom to be herself and not accept everything, that she needs to impose herself when someone is making her feeling down and Bernadette was going to make Laura being more mature with herself, since Laura was a little teen rebel, since she didn’t care that much about the authority of older persons rather than the family, so she really feels like she’s an adult and wanted to be respected like one. She’s the kind of badass tomboy girl who don’t care about authority and thing that she knows how the system works, so she obeys only who she really want

The time was going to be set around 1987 on the very first chapter which could fit very well into the canon since the anime canon takes place 30 years later, plus the time they make into adulthood and when the couple finally have their kids

The 15/16 years students on that time are going to be born on July 1971 to June 1972 and their birthdates will actually fit into the school year

Daryl is 3 years younger in this story she will be born in 1975 just like Laura’s sister Chelsea

The main differs with the canon

Since the time is changed in this AU with the anime being set on 2014 the 16 years old characters of the anime are born in 1998 in this AU.

Another thing I’m going to fix from the canon is the School year, since Luna Nova is a British school I’m going to change the school year from the canon which use the Japanese school year starting on May, but here I’m going to make the year starting in September to June next year with three vacation, December on Winter, two weeks after the easter on a spring break and the 3 months vacations from June to September when the year ends

And the whole magic limitation of them need to be near the sorcerer stone in order to use magic, in this AU they can use magic wherever they want, the most powerful the witch the most capable she is with the magic to point some of them can use their own body as wands

The dates are going to differ from the canon on the AU only when Diana is born and Chariot/Croix age since this is a part of the whole AU where the “anime” is set on 2014 and I make them both on the 30s when I didn’t know their canon ages there, so Chariot will be born on 1984, this will make her a kid when she meets Laura McLaren when she come to the Du Nord family residence to research for the fertility stone this presence of Laura is what made Chariot enchanted with magic

Bernadette have olive green eyes, idk if this differs a lot since we didn’t have proper canon information of her eyes and we didn’t even see her eyes in the anime, the main information is that the Cavendish has mostly blue eyes and I put her with greenish ones just because I want to make her unique, being the only Cavendish with a different eye color in her family

Diana is Irish/Scottish here, since Laura is Irish and Bernadette Scottish this makes Diana half of each (making her more Irish than Amanda lol)

Bernadette didn’t die, but that part could be also the one with Bernadette die and the whole canon anime happen with Laura didn’t come back to see her daughter

The Claiomh Solais didn’t appear for Chariot neither Croix and the main reason is because wasn’t needed at that time, the magic was pretty good, so both girls still become rivals but into another thing that is Broom Racing, just like on the real life we have Formula 1, so why not a championship with broom racing like Formula 1? This is what I bring into the AU in the next story which takes place after this one

Akko still idolize chariot but into her dream to become a Broom Racer and you can see here

Diana also like’s Chariot career but her main Broom Racing icon is her own mother Laura McLaren which become a excellent Broom Racer on the 1990s decade, without actually know that broom racer is her mother

The fic

It’s a remake of The mysterious mother, a lot of things are gonna be like the original but I’m also going to do a lot of changes to give more development to the characters, give more reasons to them to do what they did and also I wanted to do a story to fit in my whole AU

Well I talked a lot but not about the story, but this is because I don’t want to give a lot of spoilers on what happened and the whole answers to all these questions, even the one where Laura leaves Diana, since she’s a nice person, something happened that Laura leaves her lovely wife and her daughter and how did Diana never knew about who’s her dad actually is

Take a read into the very first chapter and have fun because this is going to be a very looong story with some familiar faces around there and some of them that are OC’s but they are needed to appear since most of the cast isn’t born at all despite the teachers at Luna Nova or Chariot and Croix that are still pretty young

Re watching Danny Phantom - episode 1

Basically, I want to analyse the show with out just going from memory. So I'll watch episode by episode, pointing both things I love and hate, and occasionally, what I would do different.

Episode 2

This one will probably be the longest just because I am recalling stuff that happen later on and for the other episodes I’ll focus more on them.

So let's get to it

“Actually, dad, I wanna be an astronaut.”

Danny’s very first line, the dream he had since the very beginning. And it’s barely shown.

He does get exited about it when it shows up but it doesn’t look like he cares about it much outside of it. for a show with such themed characters it feels like Danny is far more built. 

now it could fit if all the other characters just as built, or at least the main ones, but every character seems to have an image they go by and Danny just stands out.

“Waste these looks and all this charisma hunting ghosts?! Criminal.”

Nothing to say here, I just love that line.

The whole fight behind Jack’s back

I want to make a whole post about Idiot Jack but for now I’ll just say this:  The Idiot tropes are so lovable because usually there's a kind, caring person at the end of them. Jack is shown very little to care about Danny or Jazz and will force them into ghost hunting shenanigans based on the plot’s needs.

Jazz seems to be the only one to notice  that their parents' obsession with ghosts is interfering with their everyday lives.

Other than that, It’s a good over all introduction to the Fenton family and their work.

Opening

“You need guidance, and parents who can provide it.”

Jazz's notices that their parents' don’t pay attention to them- especially Danny. Earlier this scene, we see her read a book about adolescence and therapy and immediately she's the one to point out that her parents are ignoring Danny. They’re all together at breakfast and Jack and Maddie work right on the table.

Jazz is the one to notice how anxious Danny is most of the time and probably the only one to notice he's being bullied. (as he said- he's Dash's favorite)

Yes, Jazz thinks she's more grown up than she really is, which means that everyone in Danny’s life treats him like a child and her own obsession with being right can make her forget about the world.

But unlike many characters, she does get this development-  The Fenton Menace and  Secret Weapons are good examples of that.

“Why? Parents don’t listen. Even worse, they don’t understand. WHY CAN’T THEY ACCEPT ME FOR WHO I AM?!”

I’m going to use this to talk about lgbtq+ characters in the show. Or, more accurately the lack thereof.

I talked about it when I did some notes from memory, where I’ve mentioned that characters like Danny and Sam are so fitted to be apart of the lgbtq community that the fact that they’re not isn’t just disappointing but it feels like it’s missing.

Sam prides on being herself but she hides knowing she will always get backlash for things that don’t fit into some 1 dimensional character people expect her to be. And Danny is always afraid of being himself but when he is he feels the most free and happy.

Trans!Danny hcs didn’t just happen for no reason and if the show is ever to be rebooted I expect them to include it in, in any way.

“Your powers make you unique, and unique is good. That’s why I’m an ultra recyclo-vegetarian.”

Ok, big pet peeve of mine in the show.

They treat Sam as if she only does stuff to “be unique”. This could work perfectly if she had a development or reason- but later on all we seem to understand is that she’s just being “I’m not like other girls” and her being vegetarian or goth is nothing but her trying to either stand out or annoy her parents.

Does she actually want to do half the stuff she does? Her Sticking It To The Man attitude is admirable but whenever she talks about it it just kinda look like she would change herself to make sure she’s not ordinary.

Personally I do get it, cause it’s what I used to do, but the whole point of stating it is to show how she’s growing out of feeling like she can’t do stuff- Let her care for a stupid flour sack, let her show that she’s into ghosts and moreover I WANNA KNOW WHY

My headcanon is that that’s how she and Danny became friends in the first place and I would love to see how this gang got together.

“What if Jazz isn’t a ghost? What if we accidentally hurt her?”

Remind me why we don’t listen to Maddie more often?

Oh right, cause then they’d have to actually make the effort and have to think about how to make this show make sense.

“It’s garbage.”

Why does it look like the gang never seem to actually support one another? It doesn’t even look jokey or teasing, sometimes it just looks like they only hang out cause they have no other friends.

ghost sense

I always thought, and still think, that the blue line coming from the ghost sense is cold air turned warm and I made a post joking about Danny is always mouth breathing. And i got a comment that said “ It's probably more like a sudden cold feeling, so Danny gasps cause he's cold.“ I really liked it and I feel like they could’ve captured or explained it in the show better.

“Oh great, I’m still his favorite.”

They made that point a bunch in the show, that Dash is almost like Danny’s privet bully.

Why?

Dash bullies anyone, but Mikey and Danny seem to be a reoccurring deal (Mikey probably because he’s always doing their homework.) and they never explain it.

It just looks like main character syndrome.

“YOU CHANGED THE MENU?!”

I love how they portray more humanoid ghosts as more possible to act human and how much more scary it makes them when they suddenly break this humanity.

Lunch lady

She seems to be able to control much more than just food products (plates, books and papers, cutting the lights) and they never really explain how some ghosts can do this or that, and which powers are or aren’t universal.

(Non related but her face is adorable! Nice old evil grandma)

“repeated loitering by the girl’s locker-room.”

They really didn’t have to make Tucker a creep.

“[He threw] Four touchdown passes in the last game is thereby exempt from scorn.”

Uhh is this an american thing?? Are jocks really that much of a teacher’s pets that who ever played high school sports is able gets away with murder?

Danny’s powers’ look

They seem to always animate and portray the powers differently each time-

Sometimes when he’s intangible he’s blue, sometimes transparent, sometimes the lines change colors sometimes not.

Many animation errors seem to be about inconsistency.

“Guys, time to makeup. Now!”

He just transforms?? Right there?!

The Spike scene

Ok, we learn a lot here.

first of, why didn’t we see more of Spike in the show?! it could’ve been amazing to see Jazz with actual friends.

And if he isn’t her friend, Jazz gives advice to people? Why didn’t we see more on that? How both she and Danny want to help people and how this is her way of doing it cause she has no powers. How could’ve been her build up to becoming a hero alongside Danny!

And second, is when her parents attack her. This shows how little they listen to her, why she always feels like the only responsible person in the family and how she probably is.

I’ll probably get on that more in My Brother’s Keeper.

I usually expect side jokes to not affect the plot but here they kinda mix it and I can’t know what’s a side joke and what is more meaningful 

Y’know... I never did notice how many jokes Danny makes. But now...

Happy Holidays!

Here is @nomette ‘s submission for @ffferris with Veronica and Christine.

Pairing:  Veronica Santangelo/Christine Royce Summary:  Veronica & Christine have a happy holiday together, can be set during any time (like past, in-game, or post-game), bonus if you want to throw in other characters also having a good time but no need to feel obligated to do that, & bonus for incorporating trans headcanons. Word Count: 2,542 Rating: Safe for work

It’s the 24th of December, and the Lucky 38 smells of tamales, pine needles and a mysterious mix of fruit that Raul’s been boiling for hours. Veronica and Arcade must have tracked down every package of Dandy Boy Apples in the Commonwealth to make this drink, but she doesn’t mind. It’s the holidays. Arcade’s put up some kind of weird candelabra he calls a menorah, and there’s a pile of presents sitting in the Rec Room and a bunch of lumpy stockings nailed to the walls, courtesy of Lily’s knitting needles. The V on Veronica’s stocking looks kind of like a U, but she’s not going to complain, not when Christine’s stocking is hanging next to hers.

Veronica pauses in the doorway to the rec room and leans against the doorway, enjoying the moment. Cass and Boone are playing pool, Rex is sprawled out on the floor, and the Courier and Christine are hanging spent bullet casings on the Christmas tree. Christine’s hair has just cleared two inches, and it sits in a little fuzzy lump on top of her head. Veronica feels a little kick of delight every time she looks at her. She can’t believe she’s gotten so lucky.  Christine didn’t come back from the Sierra Madre the same- she barely talks now, and her hair has only just begun to grow back out, and her scars- but she’s still Christine, and Veronica still loves her, every piece.

“You going to come help?” the Courier asks.  She’s a skinny, half-feral little thing who doesn’t talk much and doesn’t like to sleep in the same place more than once. Veronica’s always finding her asleep in random corners of the casino, her little hammock dangling between chairs or casino tables. Veronica doubts she’s seen two decades, but Benny’s bullet knocked half the memories out of her head, so there’s no way to know.

“I carried that thing halfway across the wasteland,” Veronica says. “I think I’ve done my bit.”

“But it’s fun,” the Courier says, puzzled. “Boone’s showing me how to identify the different kind of bullet casings. This is a .38, see?” She holds up a mangled piece of metal, beaming.

“Good job, kid,” Boone says.

“I’m more of a Power Fist kind of girl,” Veronica says, flexing to show off her weapon. The Courier contemplates Veronica, then glances back at the tree.

“We could put it on top,” she says, sounding kind of dubious. Christine makes a muffled snorting sound and bursts into laughter.

“No way,” Veronica says, wrapping a protective hand around her power fist.

“I think that’s a great idea,” Christine manages between giggles. “You have to admit, it would match the tree.” The tree- a scraggly looking young pine Veronica dragged all the way from the mountains near Jacobstown- is covered in bullets casings and caution tape. Several glowing bottles of Nuka-Cola Quantum have been wedged between the branches. The tree looks like it’s ready to come to life and stage an uprising against humankind.

“I don’t know,” Cass says thoughtfully, and smirks around the rim of her glass of whiskey. “I think it would look pretty good with Boone’s beret on top.”

“No,” Boone says.

“It is colorful,” the Courier says thoughtfully.

“No,” says Boone, and Veronica takes advantage of the distraction to slip away.

Arcade and Raul are in the kitchen, along with a alrge pot of what Raul calls “ponche” and an even larger pot of tamales. Rex is sprawled out in front of the oven, keeping an eye on the large chunk of Brahmin which has been roasting since this morning. He catches sight of Veronica and whimpers and wags his tail.

“Don’t listen to that faker, we’ve been giving him scraps all day,” Arcade says cheerfully.

“When are you going to give me scraps?” Veronica asks, and imitates Rex’s mournful face. Arcade gestures to the stove.

“There’s unmashed potatoes, refried beans, apple pie, carrot cake, Cass’s jalapeño cornbread, Cass’s go-blind eggnog, and ponche. Knock yourself out.”

“Unmashed potatoes?”

“Well, I haven’t mashed them yet,” Arcade says. “I’ve been busy with the tamales.” He and Raul have made what looks like about a million tamales to Veronica, and they’re only partway through the huge tub of masa. There’s a whole assembly line on the table- masa, leaves, stewed brahmin, chickpeas. Raul looks up from his current tamale and grins.

“You wanna eat, mija? You better work. Those tamales aren’t going to fold themselves.”

“Oh-fine!” Veronica says. It’s this or get robbed of her power fist, she supposes, and she’s always liked mashing potatoes. Halfway through mashing, she feels a warm pair of arms around her waist, and looks back to find Christine, her head leaning against the small of Veronica’s back.

“Hey there,” Veronica says happily. “You come to bust me out of this life of labor?”

“Nope,” Christine says, and stands on her tiptoes to peer over Veronica’s shoulder. She’s so small. Back in the day, Veronica used to pick her up and cart her around the bunker at every possible opportunity.

“Hmmm,” Christine says, and sneaks a bit of potato onto her finger and licks it off. A small smile sneaks onto her face, and Veronica can’t help but blush. She’d mash a hundred potatoes just to see that smile. She leans over and plants a kiss on Christine’s cheek, and Christine flushes and ducks away, smiling.

Neither Raul nor Arcade say anything; Raul is engrossed enough in his tamales that Veronica doubts he’s even noticed, but Arcade gives her a wink. It’s nice to be among friends. Christine settles down next to the Raul at the table and pokes at one of the finished tamales.

“So, how do you make one of these?” she asks Raul.

“Well, you start with the leaf…” Raul begins.

It takes them another two hours to get through all the tamales, and everyone is hungry by the time they sit down at the table and start serving food. Lily has a custom-made seat just for her, an early Christmas present from Raul and Boone to allow her to sit at the table with them. Veronica, Christine and Arcade are on the right side, Boone, Cass and Raul on the left. The Courier sits at the head of the table, food already piled on her plate.

“You want to say grace, mija?” Raul asks the Courier.

“Grace?” she asks, a little line appearing between her eyebrows.

“It’s traditional to thank God before eating a big meal,” Arcade explains.

“Uh, sure,” the Courier says. She clasps her hands together, then begins to speak. “Thank you Hestia, Goddess of the Hearth, for growing the crops, and thank you Hermes for my good luck, and thank you Hades for my life. I promise to kill a legionnaire in your name before the New Year, thank you, amen.”

“Fascinating,” Arcade says, and gets elbowed by Christine. The courier is a little weird, but so is Arcade, and he doesn’t have the excuse of being a teenaged ex-slave. “Uh, amen,” he says hastily. Cass looks like she’s trying real hard not to laugh. Boone lifts his glass and grins.

“To killing legionnaires,” he says, and everyone around the table echoes the sentiment. They clink glasses, and everyone digs in. Raul’s punch is fruity and sweet, with a faint hint of sunset sarsaparilla, almost almost worth the trouble it took Christine and Veronica to find twenty boxes of Dandy Boy Apples. There’s a mountain of tamales, some heinously spicy cornbread, moonshine, apple pie, pinto beans stewed with molerat, carrot cake, eggnog, roasted brahmin, gravy, and mashed potatoes.  

Back at the Brotherhood, they mostly ate variations on carrots and potato, since they couldn’t get much to grow around the bunker. Fried potato, mashed potato, boiled potato, potato soup, potato salad- every potato and then some. Veronica skips the mashed potato and goes for the cornbread and roasted brahmin, and sees Christine do the same next to her. They grin at each other, and Christine serves Veronica a slice of pie.

“What’s in this?” Arcade asks, shoving a piece into his mouth. “I thought Raul used all the apple in his ponche.”

“Mutfruit,” Cass says matter-of-factly. “Some other stuff too, but I don’t kiss and tell.”

It’s quiet for a while as everyone stuffs their face. At first, the Courier had to be bullied into eating with a fork instead of with her hands, but she came around after Veronica pointed out that if you carry a fork and knife with you, you can also use them as back-up weapons. The Brahmin is spicy and savory, with a crisp outside and a juicy inside, and it vanishes as fast as people can cut pieces free. Everyone has at least one of Raul’s tamales, and Boone has three. The man puts away food like a refrigerator.

Afterwards, when they’re all full enough to burst, one of the securitrons comes in and clears the plates, and Rex finally gets his plate of scraps.

“I feel like the casino is going to collapse under my weight,” Cass says, groaning.

“Could that happen?” the Courier asks. She doesn’t look worried, only curious. Veronica supposes that once you’ve been shot through the head, a little building collapse probably doesn’t sound too bad.

“Probably not,” Arcade says hastily. He starts in on an explanation of how architecture works, but Veronica doesn’t hear any of it, because Christine has reached out under the table and taken her hand. One by one, she laces their fingers together. They used to do this back at the dining table in the hall, but back then it was one part bravado and one part fear. Veronica isn’t scared anymore. It doesn’t matter if anyone sees.

But she doesn’t need to show them. It’s enough that she and Christine know. Christine runs her thumb gently over the edge of Veronica’s hand, and they stay there like that, smiling, together at last. Dinner conversation turns from mutfruit to apples to weird things they’ve eaten, and Cass disgusts them all with tales of some truly dubious liquor. She and Boone are well on their way to being smashed, which bodes poorly for the midnight fireworks they promised the courier.

Only the Courier’s excited demand to get them all to the Christmas Tree for presents dislodges them from the table. Veronica and Christine walk, hand in hand, to the rec room, followed by a slightly staggering Boone and a very staggering Arcade, who got stuck supporting him. The debate about the star has been settled by ED-E nesting on top of the tree like a very strange bird.

Veronica settles onto the couch, and Christine settles onto her lap. Christine is light, a pleasant weight, and she grins when Veronica sneaks a kiss onto the side of her face. The Courier, oblivious to the people watching her, tears into her first present. It’s a framed piece of paper- nothing more than a contract, really. The Courier isn’t very good at reading. She looks at the paper, her lips moving as she tries to sound out the words.

Arcade, ever thoughtful, underlined the relevant part.

“... the undersigned Ca-Can-tra-ta,” the Courier says, frowning. “Cantrata. What does that mean?”

“Veronica and I did some research,” Arcade says. By research, he means that they broke into a privately owned building, but no one needs to know that. The man at the front desk of the Mojave Express deserves it for being so unhelpful, anyway, and it’s not like they stole anything valuable. “We looked up the records from when you were hired, and found what you signed as. It’s your name. Cantrata. I think it comes from Cantare, to sing.”

The courier looks at the paper, then at Arcade.

“My name,” she says, and repeats it. “Cantrata.” A strange look crosses her face. “I used to sing,” she says to herself,  then gets up and launches herself at him. Arcade wraps his arms around her and pats her back.

“Hey, I helped,” Veronica says, and Arcade gestures for her to join in the hug. The three of them squish awkwardly together on the couch, and for a moment Veronica is on the verge of having a real Christmas feeling.

“Thank you!” Cantrata says, and wiggles out of the hug. “I got you something too!” Whatever it is, it’s apparently too big to fit under the tree, because Cantrata runs out of the room. There’s a loud clunk, and then she comes back hauling a huge power fist painted entirely in teal and pink.

“It sets off explosives when you punch people,” she says solemnly, and hands it to Veronica.

“Uh,” Veronica says, and picks it up. One side has a yellow warning sign on it. The other side has Veronica’s full name written on it in beautiful pink calligraphy, complete with a little heart dotting the i. There’s little rhinestones around the cuff. The courier must have hired someone to bling it out.

“It’s beautiful,” Veronica says solemnly, and Cantrata grins.

“Open your next present,” she says.

There’s a matching dress.

Veronica’s final haul is a power fist from Cantrata and a dress from Arcade and Cass, a new waist pouch from Boone, a blanket from Raul, a lumpy sweater from Lily, and one more thing. After the festivities have died down, Veronica and Christine go back to their room and shut the door.

Christine’s presents come in two colorful little bags. The first one is light.  Veronica lifts it out to find a cute little bra and underwear set. There’s not very much of it.

“You can wear it under your dress,” Christine says, flushing.

The second pair is a set of shoes, likely looted from some vault. They’re a little dusty, but they fit well. Veronica slips her feet into them, and remembers. Back when she and Christine were kids in the bunker, it was a common game to talk about what you’d do when you left. No one ever left, of course, but it was fun to pretend that you would. Some kids wanted to be ranchers, some wanted to be singers, some wanted to be gamblers or rangers or deathclaw tamers. Veronica wanted to be a princess. She wanted to have a pretty dress, and live in a colorful, safe place where they never had to eat potatoes or worry about raiders. She wanted someone to love her, not for what she could do for them, but for who she was.

“A glass slipper, for my princess,” Christine says, smiling.

“I could be in rags, and you’d still make me feel like a queen, Christine,” Veronica says, and crosses the room. Christine’s hands are so small in her own. “But the pretty dress sure helps.”

[H&CF S4 SPOILERS] Headcanon that in 1994, Donna Emerson makes a very big deal over Thanksgiving

Bos stops by for a visit in early November and when he sees her lists of potential guests and centerpiece ideas and phone numbers for specialty shops that sell expensive wines, cheeses and chocolate, he teases her, "Now what's all that, a plan to break into Alcatraz?" "I just want it to be nice for the girls," she chuckles. "Haley said we should just get Chinese food that night, but…not this year. Next year, maybe. But not this year," she says firmly. "This year, we go all out."

[This got REALLLLY long but we also don’t get anymore show so THAT IS MY JUSTIFICATION]

Bos says that he'll ask Diane about stopping by that evening for dessert, and then as he's leaving Donna's, he says, "And either way? I will make sure that Cameron gets that scrawny behind of hers over here." "I appreciate that, but no pressure," Donna hugs him.

Haley convinces Joanie to come home for the holidays, or at least that one, after Donna offers to pay for her plane tickets. Donna's so overjoyed by this she ends up inviting literally everyone she knows -- she invites her parents, Cameron of course, emails the entire Symphonic staff to let them know her door is open if they don't have plans, and then sends the same email to everyone she knows from Comet (including Katie Herman) AND Mutiny

The guest list balloons to the point that Donna decides to have the whole thing catered

After a lot of hemming and hawing, she asks Haley, "Have you talked to J*e? Haley says she got an email from him, wrote back, but hasn't heard from him since. "He probably won't feel like coming back here so soon, right?" Donna wonders. "But what if he doesn't have anywhere else to go…." "Can I invite my friend Vanessa? I don't think has anywhere to go either," Haley blurts out. "Uh, sure," Donna says. She emails J*e later that night. He doesn't reply.

Donna is relieved and humbled by her house full of people that day. Cameron gets there an hour late, bottle of cheap wine in hand, and is immediately overwhelmed

Among Donna's guests: Trip, who manages to not bother her, Tanya Reese and her younger sister, who don't have any other family nearby, Comet restaurant expert Risa and her trans butch partner (whose boyish good looks mesmerize both Haley and Joanie), and Yo-yo and his wife and Lev and his partner (the sight of whom actually makes Cameron cry slightly, even though the first thing Lev says to her is, "I haven't see Tom OR Admiral Eyebrows here?! Tell me that means you're finally FREE")

Speaking of which, J*e does call, early in the afternoon, to thank Donna for checking on him. She asks how he's doing, and he admits, "I've been better. …I appreciate the invite, Donna. I couldn't, though." Thinking back to the holidays she spent by herself after the divorce, she says, "Yeah. I've been there. There's next year, though. Or the year after that. I mean, so long as you don't steal any more of my husbands." J*e laughs for the first time that day and says, "Of course. As long as you don't steal any more of my girlfriends." Donna blushes at this, and then awkwardly offers, "Do you wanna talk to her? She's here. Cameron." "Just tell her I really hope she's having a good day," he says. Donna nods and then says, "You know who probably wants to talk to you? Let me find Haley…." He and Haley talk for 20 minutes, and when she mentions Vanessa, he says, "You'll both figure it out. I promise."

Just before dessert is served, Cameron tries to go hide in the kitchen for a bit, but Donna is there, also hiding, weeping quietly over the sink. When she asks Donna if she's okay, she says, "Oh, I'm fine…I'm better than fine. Everything is exactly how I wanted it to be, Joanie is home, everyone seems like they're having a good time, the food is great and we'll have leftovers for a week…it's like, my whole life is out there. Except for Gordon." Cameron frowns at her, "So that's what all of this was about, huh? At least we got a chocolate fountain out of it, I guess." Donna laughs and says, "I thought about just having a normal dinner, but it just felt too much like that last time at Gordon's. Bos' chili."

Cameron understands Donna's mixed feelings. "Have you talked to Lev, or Yo-yo? I've been catching up with them and it's really great but it feels sad too. I don't know why that is." "It's great, but it makes you realize how finite everything is, maybe that's why it's so sad," Donna sighs. "Or maybe we're just weird?" "I've considered that, I'm pretty sure I'm weird," Cameron says. "Well, I gotta get back out there, so come be weird out there, when you're ready," Donna says gently, grabbing a box of plastic pie servers. Cameron takes a few deep breaths, and then when she hears the doorbell, and then Bos' voice, she goes back out to the party.

While everyone is eating dessert, Donna interrupts the party to thank everyone for being there. "This year has been…strange. It's been hard, but it's been good, too, and I'm just grateful that all of you decided to spend part of your day here. So, enjoy! My house is your house, today. Stay as long as you'd like, and don't forget to make a plate to take home if you'd like!" (Almost everyone does make a plate, but Donna's still drowning in leftovers at the end of the night.)

After the last guests leave, Donna starts putting away the food, and Cameron tries to make herself useful by helping her with it. They scrape and pour into and wrap and cover together silently, until Donna thanks her. "You don't have to stay, though, I've got this," Donna reassures her. "Yeah, but we didn't really get to talk, it was so busy," Cameron shrugs. "It's okay. I don't mind helping. I don't have anywhere else to be." Donna smiles and says, "Okay, I'm just gonna go change, I'll be right back."

Donna is already in her sweatpants, sitting on her bed near her nightstand, taking off her jewelry when Haley knocks on her open bedroom door. When Donna tells her to come in, she sits down next to Donna. "I feel sick. I'm not sure if it's because I ate too much pie or because I miss dad." Before Donna can respond, Haley bursts into tears. Donna puts an arm around her and jokes, "But you liked the pie at least, right?"

Cameron spends twenty minutes clearing away all the cups and plates and bottles, and then realizes how quiet and empty and strange the house feels now. Worried that she's overstayed, she goes looking for Donna so she can thank her, say good night, and go home. She sees Joanie standing in a doorway, and calls out, "Hey, is your mom in there?" Joanie turns to smile at her, and motions for Cameron to follow her as she goes into Donna's bedroom.

Cameron stops short when she sees Donna, Haley, and Joanie curled up together on Donna's bed. Haley is asleep, head on Donna's chest, hair rumpled and face blotchy. "I'm sorry, I was gonna go back out there and ask you how you were doing," Donna whispers, "but…" "No, it's okay," Cameron says, feeling an ache in her chest. "I'm gonna get out of here, we can --" "Wait, why?" Joanie interrupts her. "You don't have to go just because Haley fell asleep," she bounces up and grabs Cameron's hand, and drags her to Donna's bed. She goes back to her spot next to her mom, and Cameron gingerly sits on the edge of the bed. "I was just telling mom that she has got to dial it back for Christmas," Joanie says. "Except for the chocolate fountain…."

"Joanie," Donna says firmly, "for the last time, we are not keeping the chocolate fountain. Cameron, how was your day? Are you alright?" "Yeah," Cameron grins. She kicks off her shoes so she can lie down, and gets comfortable, or more comfortable. "I'm okay. This is the easiest Thanksgiving I've had in a while, we always used to go to Tom's family's house in Dallas. God, his mom hated me." Joanie responds with a silent glare, and Donna says, "Well her son is a hypocrite and a jerk and a plagiarist." "He wasn't all bad. And he put up with me," Cameron argues. Like a pair of synchronized swimmers, Donna and Joanie turn at the same time to look at Cameron with the same 'are you serious?!' face. Cameron blushes, and Joanie moves over and throws an arm around her, and says, "Well whatever, we love you even if they didn't." She hops up off the bed and says, "I'm gonna get some pajamas on, be right back!"

Donna sighs, "He really was an asshole." "You never liked him," Cameron replies, and Donna says, "You're right, I never did." After a minute Cameron says, "Thanks for always liking me better than you liked him." Donna snaps, "He made it easy," and then says, "Of course I liked you better. You were my partner. And now…you're family, really." "Right," Cameron nods. "Thanks for inviting me today."

By the time Joanie comes back, an hour later, Cameron and Donna are both asleep. She smiles at them, shuts off the light, and goes back to her spot between them.

Cameron wakes up late the next morning in Donna's empty bed. Donna is standing in front of her dresser, brushing her hair. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to stay here," Cameron frets. "That's okay," Donna shrugs, pulling her hair back into a ponytail. "You can rest more, if you want." "No, no, I'm good," Cameron says getting up. "Okay, then you're free to join the feeding frenzy in the kitchen," Donna replies, "Joanie is on second breakfast, they already ate all the cereal," she grouses as she leaves the room

After a few minutes, Cameron goes to the kitchen, feeling like an intruder. Joanie is making eggs, pancakes, and bacon and telling a story about Thailand, Haley is laughing at her, and Donna is putting on some coffee, beaming at the both of them. She wonders if she should sneak out without bothering them, but Joanie says, "Hey! Are you hungry?" "No, I'm okay, I was just gonna let you guys, you know…" Cameron trails off. "Really?" Haley side eyes her. "Yeah, I don't even really live here anymore, and you're not even gonna stay and visit with me?" Joanie huffs. "Rude much?"

Donna pours some coffee into a mug an walks it over to Cameron. "She has a point," she says. Cameron accepts the coffee, and spends the rest of the afternoon there, listening to the three of them talk and bicker and giggle and tease each other, grateful to be with them, even if she's not yet fully convinced that she really belongs there.

Fanworks Addressing Representation of Queer Characters

Due to the distinct lack of representation of queer identities in the wizarding world, many fans have taken it upon themselves to write (or draw!) queer characters into Harry Potter.  

While not all works that portray characters as LGBTQ+ are made by fans who are themselves a part of this community, it is most important to focus on these works.  This is because works by LGBTQ+ fans are attempts to see people like them within the series.  Creating fanworks allows fans to reinterpret the series from their own perspective and address themes that may not otherwise be present in the series.  It makes sense that fan made content would address more sexual themes, as sex and sexuality are barely if at all touched upon in the texts.  A decent proportion of fanfiction and fan art, no matter the ship, is entirely sexual or alludes to a sexual nature.  This is likely because individuals who grew up during the age of Harry Potter are now at an age where sex and sexuality are normal parts of life.

The works featured below are attempts made by fans to include queer identities in the wizarding world.  Content includes fanfiction, artwork, and other media.  It is difficult to determine whether or not the content has been created by queer people because individuals may not share that information in conjunction with their work, however an effort has been made to ensure with some degree of confidence that these works come from within the LGBTQ+ community.  

FANFICTION

There is a vast amount of Harry Potter fanfiction on the Internet.  In fanfiction, fans of the series write content set in the wizarding world developed by Rowling, often using the same characters, settings, and major plot devices. This is done in order to interact with the texts, to provide a different perspective, or represent characters in a way that the fanfiction authors imagine.  Often times fanfiction features pairing or ships (relationships) between characters who do not share a relationship in the text, fans are able to represent characters as LGBTQ and often do so.

“The Secret’s in the Telling” is an immensely popular fanfiction written by user Sakuri and published on Fanfiction.Net. The story revolves around a relationship between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, a ship called “Drarry.”  The work has been translated into 7 additional languages by other users and is composed of 153,300 words in 42 chapters.  In the story Draco is turned into a werewolf and he comes to find comfort in the only other student who knows of this condition, Harry Potter.  

It is unclear whether or not the user Sakuri is a member of the LGBTQ community, though examination of link to other social media sites seem to suggest the author identifies as a woman. Nonetheless, this is a grand example of the popularity of fan works representing characters as queer.  Drarry is a very popular ship in the Harry Potter fandom, and the popularity of this particular story shows that many individuals seek to see queer representation in the wizarding world.

“Cedric looked down at him, still smiling, and Harry’s heart felt like it would explode.  This was the closest he’d ever gotten to Cedric and his beautiful grey eyes were now staring directly into his’ he could feel Cedric’s warm breath over his and it drove him mad.”

This is a quote from a fanfiction called “So I Swear” which is written by user LegendaryWrighter.  This fanfiction is about a less popular gay pairing between Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory because LegendaryWrighter was inspired by The Goblet of Fire.  This is a very long piece composed of over 100,000 words in 36 chapter.  There are hundreds of reviews and favorites and it is clearly very popular.  In the story, Harry and Cedric form a romantic relationship sometime after the quidditch match in The Prisoner of Azkaban and it affects the pair in the Triwizard Tournament.  

This piece obviously reinterprets the characters as gay, though in this case it is unclear if the author himself is gay. After a scanning of a few of the linked profiles from LegendaryWrighter, the only thing that is clear is that he identifies as male and all of the fanfiction stories that he has posted focus on characters as homosexual men in romantic relationships.  It seems quite possible that the author themself is gay and therefore seeking to reinterpret his favorite characters as gay to address the lack of representation in the Harry Potter series.

Posted on Tumblr, this one-shot fanfiction is about Fleur Delacour and Hermione Granger in a romantic setting.  In this story, Fleur is a mermaid who saves Hermione from drowning; the girls flirt once Hermione is safe on dry land again. Fleurmione is not a very common pairing, based on preliminary research, but there are a decent number of written pieces and fanart available. 

The author for this piece labels themselves as gender: agender and bisexual demiromantic, so they are certainly a part of the queer community.  As such, this piece is certainly an attempt made by a queer person to represent queer characters in the wizarding world.

HEADCANONS

Headcannons are facts or thoughts that fans come up with that could be true but are never addressed in the texts.

“When Ginny is five, she demands to be called by that name and tells everybody that she is a girl (a thing that she never really questioned). Her family accepts it right away, partly because they all wish for a girl in their rows, but also because they see that she is so much happier once they start treating her like one.”

In this headcannon, Ginny is trans AMAB and most of her life is described.  In explaining her time at Hogwarts, the author says, “Ginny goes through most of her school life without telling many people that she is trans because she doesn’t think anybody would or should care. Some find it out though, and whenever the reactions are negative, she hexes them.”  Later, the author hypothesizes that after Ginny’s quidditch career she becomes an author and activist for the queer/trans community.”

Robin, the author, uses they/them pronouns and identifies as pansexual and nonbinary.  Clearly, this is an attempt of a queer fan to see someone similar to them in the story.  The headcannon is accompanied by graphics that depict Ginny and other images that Robin relates to Ginny.  What makes this headcannon so enticing is the fact that Ginny’s fiery personality from the books is captured well and the concept of trans Ginny fits well within the canon of the Weasley family.

Tumblr user Permanentjetlaq, who says her name is Nicole, appears to be a part of the LGBTQ community based on posts to her twitter account about “being gay” and the fact that she specifically points out that her pronouns are she/her on her profiles.  In her headcannon, Nicole points out that veelas who are humanoid female magical creatures with the ability to persuade and deceive males in the texts with their sexuality.  Nicole theorizes that because the veelas’ power is based on sexual attraction, then it’s possible that some witches and wizards may find out that they are or not attracted to women after seeing the veelas at the World Cup.  

VIDEOS

There is a vast number of fan-made videos (fanvids) on the internet based on or relating to Harry Potter.  Some videos are skits using Harry Potter characters, some discuss topics relating to the series, and others use clips from the movies to tell and alternate story.  The most wellknown examples of Harry Potter fanvids are the Harry Potter Puppet Pal videos and the Very Potter Musical series.  

Two videos which particularly speak to queer representation are made by TheMischiefManagers,a group of young adults from Sweden who cosplay as Harry Potter characters and make videos for Youtube.  Their channel has 11,000 subscribers which is a decent amount, but is nowhere near the amount that the “Youtube stars” have. Per the “About” section on their channel, two of the four in the group identify specifically as queer.

“Potions & Prejudices” is a skit about the Marauders where Remus and Sirius are portrayed as being in a serious relationship and James is discussing a recent conversation he had with Lily about muggle studies as a controversial subject because it fetishizes another culture.  In the description for the video, they explain that, “We have based our marauders and the HP world on what we can see in the books and…, NOT on JKR's post published additions.”  They continue to say that, “We believe the wizarding world was extremely old fashioned and therefore conservative as well. We therefore DO NOT think the wizarding world, or Hogwarts for that matter, was an open and safe place when it comes to LGBTQA+ and other non-heteronormative expressions, not during the marauders time at least.”

Based on the original texts as they were published, there is support for their theory about the wizarding world as old fashioned and conservative.  It does seem likely that under these circumstances, queer people would not be widely accepted by the society at large.  Obviously, this group of young adults cares a lot about the world of Harry Potter as well as the LGBTQ community and including queer characters in their work is an extension of this.  

In this video, they feature Harry and Draco embracing and later kissing.  When Harry and Draco are caught by Hermione and Ron, Harry merely says, “No homo.”  

This video reimagines Harry and Draco as gay and includes social commentary about a recent trend of young males constantly clarifying that their actions (whether affectionate or not) are not to be interpreted as homosexual.  This is likely based on societal pressures like homophobia and toxic masculinity.

A wildly popular ship in the Harry Potter fandom is Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, often referred to as “wolfstar.”  The pairing is named this way because Remus is a werewolf and Sirius is named after a constellation.  The Harry Potter novels do not spend very much time focusing on the marauders, but fans of the series often explore this is art or writing. Fans of this ship, from my personal perspective, are far more dedicated to their ship than even Drarry shippers.   On Tumblr, when one searches the tag “wolfstar” there are posts with fan art as well as fanfiction and roleplay accounts.  This attests to the popularity of portraying Remus and Sirius as homosexual despite no canon evidence that the characters are indeed gay.  

The artist for this particular piece identifies as queer, uses she/her pronouns and is asexual.  The artist features artwork on her blog with many pairings, including ones between two male characters or two female characters.  This particular work of art is sexual in nature, which seems to be a common theme among works relating to this pairing.

This is fan art depicting Bellatrix Lestrange and Hermione Granger in an intimate situation.  This pairing is often referred to as “Bellamione” by the fandom. Pairings like this are referred to as slash in fandom, because the pairing is completely contrary to the canon text.  

The artist does not share her name but does share on her DeviantArt profile that she is a lesbian who enjoys interpreting characters she likes as lesbians.  This certainly fits the theme of people in the queer community representing people like themselves in fan work.  The artist has many artworks posted that are similar to this one, featuring characters portrayed in lesbian relationships.

This art piece depicts Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley embracing on the ground in the snow and was posted by user Gone-Batty on DeviantArt.  This was a commissioned piece, but even other pieces posted by this user show homosexual pairings.  After finding a link to Gone-Batty’s Tumblr blog, a personal post revealed that they identify as gender nonbinary.  The Hermione/Ginny pairing is not unusual, though most fanfiction that I have come across merely portrays the duo as best friends. This is interesting because it contrasts the canon pairing of Hermione with Ron who is Ginny’s brother.  

Since user Gone-Batty is indeed a member of the LGBTQ community, this art fits into place with the others that show queer artists representing characters from Harry Potter as queer too.

This is an image portraying Lavender Brown and Parvati Patil enjoying an intimate train ride back to Hogwarts.  This seems like a unique pairing, especially since both characters play very minor roles in the series.  Many of the comments on this image discuss the fact that they have never thought of this pairing before, but that they think it is cute.  

Glee-chan does not state if she is a member of the LGBTQ community on her DeviantArt, however many posts on her Tumblr page discuss being gay so it is fairly safe to assume she is indeed a part of this community.

This is an image portraying Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood in an intimate embrace, staring at one another as if they are about to kiss.  This, from personal experience, is neither a common nor an uncommon pairing.  It is also reasonable to note that many fans include Hermione in their fan art or fanfiction in both heterosexual and homosexual pairings.  

RowenaJackson dedicates this piece to her girlfriend in the description for this artwork. This means that the artist is also a lesbian and therefore clearly an example of queer people making attempts to see queer characters in the Harry Potter series.
