Can you explain the small challenging components of Perfume that made them so fresh and interesting 10-15 years ago. I assume it's him bringing more of a dance sound to the idol world. As well as all his crazy mangling of vocal tuning. Anything I'm missing? Aside from production, anything composition wise?
I’m responding to this a bit late but essentially yes. I can't really speak on comp because I'm not a music nerd, but to my ears as someone who started out listening to J-pop idol groups, I think Nakata managed to also introduce melodies that were unusual/nonstandard in popular music over there. But it was largely the heaviness of his production, how loud the music was that it sometimes drowned out their altered voices, etc. There’s an aspect of Perfume’s music that sometimes “minimizes” their presence.
The type of music he made for them was really only one part of it though; there had been some attempts at electronic music "genre-dols" prior and contemporaneously but they never caught on, and I think on the western side of things there isn't enough credit given to the overall kitsch presentation of Perfume. It wasn't just the music itself that made them sell; it was the distinct, imitable and easy-to-understand choreography style, the way they had identifiable "characters," their enthusiasm during concerts, and so on.
They also became more digestible as soon as Kinoko stopped writing their lyrics -- early-on that was easily the most challenging aspect of them as an idol unit and something that defined them at the same time, they were often singing these upbeat songs with ~depressing or downright strange lyrics lol. This made it difficult for them to find an audience (and they themselves struggled sometimes to relate to and convey their material as they’ve said in interviews) yet IMO it was a lot more interesting than e.g. "chocolate disco x10" and "we are challenger x5" etc. I think that Nakata sort of compensated for this after Kinoko's departure (I won't say firing...) with the aforementioned production for a while, stuff like GAME, Butterfly, edge and so on, but he's just a different lyricist and I’m sure Amuse or whomever doesn’t seek a return to that style.
(While I'm at it, it's not that I think they should be Debbie Downer: The Idol Group, they weren't even when Kinoko was part of their team, they've just lost that dimension to their material and it was something that helped make them unique. But their English-speaking fans don't care and their songs retained the often nebulously cool or mildly melancholic slant; it doesn't help much that their hits are Chocolate Disco, Dream Fighter, FLASH, etc as well, so there's no impetus to return to that sort of concept.)

the picture of passionate journalists in search of the truth sure looks fckg ugly right now.
24 journalists (and many of their family members) have been bombed to shreds in palestine and western media outlets discuss wether or not the numbers from the hospital bombing or the church bombing or anything really coming out of gaza is reliable.
Dunno man, if y'all would move your ass away from Tel Aviv and go to gaza maybe you could report on it. And unless you are willing to do that truthfully, maybe fight to protect your colleagues in gaza so they can do it. Report on their deaths. On how, before they were killed, they had to report on the death of their colleagues. How their accounts went silent too. Or like the many doctors in gaza only knew their family had been targeted bc they landed as patients in front of them, partially burned and torn apart. Report on it you cowards.
Or you know, quit your job since you are just a mouthpiece for a publically happening genocide and not investigating shit. Go work in another field, forget you ever called yourself a journalist and spare us this giant waste of time.
May the brave palestinian journalists rest in peace. And may their reporting forever haunt those that are responsible and those that are quiet.

Every time I’m with my irls the subject comes up a lot more cause they’re into more female oriented series but man while it’s given better female rep is just okay-not astounding but not feeding into the more worse tropes of women in anime-I feel really bad for Michiru.
It’s like she’s the more prominent female in getter as she’s probably had the most appearances out of any of the others but I feel she’s never been used to her fullest potential.
The manga really felt like Ken didn’t know what to do with her as she just kinda existed and then was killed off, arma just uses her as a plot device, toei I can’t speak fully but I know she’s a support character however given it’s that role and the 70s it only goes so far and in other canons she’s flat out hardly acknowledged. (SVN literally just has her as a cameo)
New is probably her best version but I feel there was some missed opportunities with her as the Hein arc could’ve shown more what was going on in the present and with her but it didn’t have enough time for that, and even if she does have dynamics with the boys hers and Ryomas are very undeveloped as they hardly interacted which is both a shock and a shame as they seemed to be fun in the one ep-ep 2-where they really talked.
And also as much as I like News approach to her characterization it is a shame we hardly ever seen the more traditional version of Michiru be fleshed out, when even if “uwu nice girl” is more basic it can still work and be a good character. Like it made me more sad watching Android Kikaider and seeing Mitsuko who’s basically the same trope as Michiru-down to even LOOKING like her-being a older sister with a dead brother, absent mother and a sus scientist father and be so fleshed out, but Michiru never got that chance.
You can always say “oh maybe in another getter project” but fuck knows when that’ll happen ever man💀

Speaking of crosswords, I made a new friend that loves them (her personal record for the nyt mini is 13 seconds!!!) and we were doing paper plate awards and I made hers a super basic crossword and she was so excited she cried a little!
Anyways I told her she should start trying to write them, considering she says she literally sees crosswords when her eyes are closed. Just wanted to share since you are The Crossword Person in my brain lol
that's awesome! i hope she tries it out and has fun with it! i think writing crosswords enhances the crossword-solving experience because you better understand what goes into it and can really admire a clever theme or an elegant fill in a way that you might not have noticed otherwise. at least that's been the case for me! it also makes me way crankier now when i see a poorly done puzzle, but you win some you lose some. best of luck to her!! <3

ok so I've seen quite a handful of nbc hannibal fans say that the og red dragon book is not that interesting just because there's not enough "dialogue" or content between hannibal and will and this shit fucking INFURIATES me like no other. As much as I am a HUGE hannigram enthusiast, I still think that these kinds of comments are fucking insane honestly, (especially coming from fannibals!) because it's originally written as a crime/procedural novel and NOT as an in-depth analysis novel about Hannibal and Will's dynamic (as goes for the rest of the Thomas Harris novels).
Though there are still underlying "hannigram" implications in the book just from their dialogues together, it really just only shows how much more depth can be gotten out from their relationship, which is clearly grown to its fullest potential in the nbc series. But it still doesn't guarantee that the source content would be exactly parallel to what was inspired by it, and if you didn't like the book just because of the “lack” of hannigram content then I suggest you to go read fanfics instead because the original Red Dragon book is of more worth than your fandom mindset or whatever LMFAO.
Obviously it is not gonna be like the series because just to be frank, the show is just basically fanfic made canon (in the absolute best way possible) LMAO and it is basically written out as a hybrid version of their original Red Dragon dynamic and Clarice and Hannibal's relationship in TSOTL and Hannibal (the book). But saying that the original source material is dull or bland just because you watched the series first just means that you didn't completely understand how the show came to be and the complexity with hannibal and will's relationship.
So to all the nbc hannibal fans out there who are planning to read the red dragon book and the Thomas Harris novels, don't expect their relationship in it to be exactly explicit just like how the show portrays and just because it isn't, doesn't mean that the book is "uninteresting" or "dull". It just means that you're a rigid reader and you didn't get the entire point of the novel and the basic foundation to the series you know and love. Thank you for listening.
