HOWDY EVERYONE- so excited to FINALLY be able to show off my piece for this year's Bumbleby Big Bang!

Unfortunately no accompanying story as of yet- but I really hope you guys get to read it someday! The premise involves Yang cursed to be trapped inside a sword, which was an idea I KNEW I had to make move.

Details and development stuff under the cut!

Lots of fun collaboration with the author, Celeste! We worked together to find the look-of-picture, Blake's outfit, how the Grimm look, the style of the sword, the whole shabang! I'm really happy with how it all turned out!

When I first saw all the prompts, even before claims opened, I got to work on a handful of exploration pieces based on some of the summaries, to decide which of the stories I was interested in would be the best fit. Here's the initial idea for this one I put together over a lunch break:

After showing Celeste, we got to work finding the look we wanted! Went back and forth a bit and found this great look for Blake! Also shoutout to Pinterest boards for visdev inspiration I love you Pinterest boards.

Just about everything stayed to final anim, with the simplification of getting rid of that purple cloth hanging from her belt, (since I already had the rope ends to think about working with), and the light purple strap across the chest, since leaving it out would simplify the linework on her chest.

The sword also went through a bit of change! Celeste had the idea of Yang making the sword catch on fire, which I LOVED. I went with a split design so we can see the fire more clearly start from the hilt and grow to cover the whole blade.

And from there we brainstormed animation ideas! I went all over Youtube for video reference of sword work (that would be complex enough to be interesting, but short enough to be manageable). I found something we liked from Motion Actor Inc., a channel I've used LOTS for both personal and professional work (I work in 3D Animation, for those who don't know). I edited this together, to see the action from multiple places at once, which gave me the idea for that camera move that's in the final anim!

Now for the fun part! Make that badboy MOVE. For the cam turn, the first frame she's in the air I'm referencing the top left video, and the frame she lands I'm referencing the bottom left one. While she's airborne I'm just inbetweening that! No reference for the Grimm, just wanted it responding to her attacks, but I end up tweaking the roughs later on to make the block feel stronger.

Then from there we had to actually figure out Grimm designs! Nimona had just released, and Celeste and I loved it, so she asked if I could take some inspiration from Nimona's shadow form! GLADLY. Here's what I came up with!

I was going between how the movies and comic designed Nimona, really loving the almost liquid shadow of the movie, but also how the comics had this broken up/held together rougher form. Celeste liked the second to last one the best! The original plan was to have it leave a wispy shadow trail like the concept art, but to simplify the animation we left it solid instead!

Next up is tiedown! Basically just getting the roughs more on-model, so the lineart comes out nice and clean. I've also transferred the new Grimm design to the base from earlier, and fire's also outlined orange so it reads clearer. (SPOILER- if you look REAL close here, you can see Yang visible in the fire! I liked the idea of Blake's slash also doubling as Yang throwing a punch. The idea is in the concept art earlier but now it's working with the action.)

Next step- final look of picture!! I asked Celeste for sources of inspiration to draw from when thinking about environment design, and we got Nimona, She-Ra, and Owl House! Used each of those as springboards for shading style, colour palettes, and how the fire would look!

From there, we kept the straight trees/bush/lake/foreground greenery from the first one, the blues from the second, and the fire from the third!

Once I had this frame, it was a matter of working backwards and making the background work pre-camera turn (which was ABSOLUTELY the most challenging part of this process). Learned a lot doing this! Procreate isn't quite equipped to make something like this efficient, but I'm pleased to say that Dreams would make something like this easier in the future (keyframing objects instead of hand-drawing/spacing duplicates by hand, for example).

From then on it was just colouring the lineart, adding shading, and finishing up the background! Beginning-to-end this whole process was beginning of July to end of October!

I had an absolute BLAST putting all this together. Here's to next year where I find a way to do something even more ridiculously complicated!! It's fun!!!

Okay so I'm pondering on my next comic. I'd already done something fluffy recently (Huntlow), and I have another one on the works (The Stanley Parable). I wanted to balance it out with some angst. :3

I would still make both but I wanted to make the poll to figure out which comic I should do first based on the no. of votes. ^u^ (I also have this poll on twitter (X) so I could have comparisons)

"Haircut" : This one though had been in my WIP files for months now since I needed to revise its script. But work was getting me distracted so I had to pause.

"Skip" : I have some few ideas for this one but it wasn't solid enough. So I have to thank you (@/soupyye and @/BogMob on twitter (X)) for indirectly giving me an idea of what to draw. Now all I need is to write the script. :3

What I Thought About "Labyrinth Runners" from The Owl House

Salutations, random people on the internet who certainly won't read this. I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons.

And what's this? ANOTHER Gus episode? Wow, that's like...two more than we got last season. I bet the Gus fans are happy about that one.

As for me, I'm also happy. Because, to tell you the truth, I always found Gus...the most uninteresting character in the main cast. I never hated him. At all. It's just that compared to Luz, Amity, Willow, Eda, King, and even Hunter, Gus does not have much going for him, at least to me. "Through the Looking Glass Ruins" was a good start in the right direction, showing fans his insecurities of being an illusionist, but...

Luz is a human girl who has to decide if she wants to be with her mother again or be stuck with the only friends she's ever made in her life.

Amity grew up in a home life where her parents forced her to be everything they wanted her to be instead of letting Amity choose her own life.

Willow spent years being bullied by her peers, giving her self-confidence issues she had recently confronted.

Eda is a woman trying to be the best caretaker she can be while dealing with this curse that destroyed some of the best relationships in her life.

King is a child who wants his original family again, only to learn that he's the last of his species that got hunted to near extinction.

AND DO I EVEN HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT HUNTER AT THIS POINT?!

In other words, while Gus can be engaging, he's not the character that I'm most excited about taking the spotlight compared to everyone else. But I'm willing to bet that "Labyrinth Runners" is the episode to change that. Because Season 2B is on a winning streak, and I doubt that my boy will get out of this episode emotionally and maybe even physically unscathed.

WHAT I LIKED

No Luz, Eda, and/or King: Let's start things off by saying this was the best possible decision.

We already have a good idea of what our main Trio is up to and why they're absent for the week. It makes sense why we don’t see them, and it comes with the benefit of giving more screen time to the rest of our main cast. Added with some much needed development for certain characters.Don’t get me wrong, I am curious of what happened at the Owl House, especially after how last week’s episode ended, but that’s for next week to solve.

For now, let’s give some of our other characters some more love.

The Opening Scene: Speaking of more love, can someone give baby Gus a hug? Please?

This opening ties back to the insecurities Gus felt in “Through the Looking Glass Ruins.” He’s the smartest and most gifted Illusionist around, but he also feels too easy to trick. It tells us how willing Gus is for a friend that he looks past red flags and reason. For instance, if someone tells you to do all their homework, it’s probably a sign that they don’t care about you at all. Gus learned that lesson the hard way, and his pain is both genuine as it is hard to see.

This then leads to some solid foreshadowing of what the “Labyrinth” in the title will be, as we see what happens when Gus panics. I’ll get into the ideas behind the “Labyrinth” later, but for now, I’ll say that this is an interesting way to illustrate how a person like Gus can get inside his own head, making the self-deprecating voices real people to torture him. It’s heartbreaking as it is fascinating.

How Gus Met Willow: Thankfully, we get some fluff to this heartbreak.

I mean, the writers didn’t NEED to show young Gus and Willow meeting for the first time and being oh, so cute together…but they did. And I love it. So much of this second half of the season has been one stab to the heart after the other. So, I’m glad we got to see a cute moment for a change. It was nice.

Mattholomule, Emira, and Edric in Multi-tracks: And this…was unexpected.

We actually get a showcase of great character development here. Mattholomule, after learning how impressive Illusion magic can be, decides to give it a go himself. It presents that he’s willing to be more open minded and that he wants to be closer to Gus. As a friend, of course…or possibly something more.

Then there’s Edric, who took the misadventure with Eda and King as a learning experience as he decides to embrace his interests and mix-match his tracks. Even Emira’s following in her brother’s footsteps and learns more about healing magic. And, who knows? Maybe this could be something her and Viney could bond over…if they ever get a chance to meet.

What’s worth noting, though, is the teacher saying how happy she is to see students mixing tracks. For one, it shows how not everyone subscribes to Belos’ ploy of doing one type of magic for the rest of their life. This teacher actually misses doing more than Illusion magic and she’s glad that her students are allowed more freedom. It’s also intriguing that this is the happiest students have been in Hexide. Crazy to think that if you give kids will be happy if you give them the chance to do whatever, huh?

But by far, the best thing about this reveal, is that it becomes the crux of this episode. Because students keep mix-matching tracks, Belos reasonably gets pissed and decides to send one of his top coven heads into tricking kids into joining a coven. It’s f**ked up…and I love it. I love that this moment that made me happy for the characters quickly makes me worried about them.

But this is about members of the supporting cast. Let’s talk about our main players.

Willow and Amity Tension: I mean, this IS Gus’ episode…but this little plotline is definitely appreciated. I’ve already mentioned that while things are better between Willow and Amity, that doesn’t mean things are fixed. There are still issues they need to confront, with today’s problem being how Amity sees Willow as the little wall flower who couldn’t summon an abomination properly. On the one hand, I can understand Amity’s point of view. She’s hardly got to spend time with Willow unless Luz was present, barely getting a chance to see how capable Willow’s become. Amity and Willow JUST became friends again, and Amity doesn’t want to lose Willow a second time.

On the other hand, I obviously side with Willow here. It’s annoying when people see you as one way when you’ve worked hard to live past those expectations. This makes Willow’s frustration more than valid, as I’m sure she would love to be friends with Amity again but Amity’s inability to realize that Willow’s changed makes it difficult for them to pick up where they left off. “Labyrinth Runners” gives hope, though, as Amity quickly adjusts to the new Willow after a stern, well-deserved outburst. Amity isn’t the more talented one while Willow’s still learning. They’re both talented, and may those who cross them beware. You’re dealing with two former besties who are trying their best but can still very much kick your ass.

Hunter Hiding in Hexide: And now let’s see what Gus’ co-star this week has been up to.

Hunter hiding in Hexide might sound a little too convenient for the plot, but it kind of make sense. Hexide is quite possibly the last place Belos would think to look and it comes with the benefit of Hunter having a roof over his head. Also, free snacks.

Now, you’re probably asking “Why doesn’t Hunter just hide out at one of his friends' houses?” Well, to put it bluntly, Hunter doesn’t trust anyone anymore. The one person he thought he could believe in turned out to be a witch hunting maniac who has killed dozens of people like Hunter in the past. That type of thing could certainly put a damper on one’s faith in others, so I can understand why he would camp out in a place that provides resources without having him to rely on anyone but himself…and Flapjack.

Obviously, he’ll still trust Flapjack.

Unfortunately, even though Hunter tried to escape Belos, the Emperor’s influence tends to find its way to him.

Adrian Graye: I hate this guy. He nearly tricked students into joining a coven, almost forced Gus into a coven he has zero experience in, brought back old wounds Hunter has with Belos, and put Gus through physical discomfort just to get some information. Adrian Graye is a despicable son of a witch…but MAN is he also a delightful son of a witch, too!

Don’t get me wrong, I still hate him. But he’s also everything I’d expect from the head of the Illusionist Coven: Flamboyant with a knack for showmanship to the point where he treats every illusion like putting up a stage show. It’s the perfect personality for such a devious foe, AND he’s a spot-on antagonist for a Gus episode. Can you think of anybody better for Gus to go toe-to-toe with than a master illusionist? I can’t. And I’m glad that Gus came out on top. We all joked about how it’d be him who gets traumatized this episode but, if anything, it’s Adrian Graye who’s more mentally scarred by the day’s events. That’s actually a nice twist on expectations, while also making Adrian Graye get everything he deserves. Odds are, we won’t see him again given how little time this show has left, but I still appreciate what we got with Adrian. He’s a son of a witch, but he sure was a ton of fun.

Gus Makes the “Labyrinth”: I keep putting “Labyrinth” in quotation marks because it’s not exactly a labyrinth. A labyrinth is a maze that’s constantly changing, making it difficult to travel through as one room could easily be one you’ve already been into with the trail you leave behind getting lost during the journey. What Gus made is more or less an actual maze, being difficult to traverse but not impossible.

With that said, what Gus did is incredible. He basically made a maze where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what isn’t. It’s an interesting idea, added by the fact that Gus can partially see through the illusion…which is something that’s barely touched upon, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

What I love, however, is how powerful this makes Gus look. He managed to make a convincing maze of places in his memories completely by accident, and it’s enough that the head of the Illusionist Coven was impressed. And if this is something that Gus can do by accident, imagine the crazy things he can pull off on purpose. Something tells me that the trick he pulled in “Through the Looking Glass Ruins” is just the tip of the iceberg for what Gus can pull off, and I can’t wait to see how he can top it.

Gus and Hunter: And now that we’re already talking about how awesome Gus is, let’s go into how he was the perfect partner for Hunter this episode.

Hunter’s shell is now fully cracked, with recent events leaving him a soft, sad boy. And it takes another soft, sad boy to help him. Gus knows how it’s hard to trust people, getting burned way too often by people he thought would be his friend. So, knowing how vulnerable Hunter is, Gus offers advice AND helps him learn that there are people worth trusting. What I personally adore is the breathing technique Gus teaches. It was a lesson he got from Willow in a moment that Gus learned he isn’t alone with his anxieties. He just needs to take a breath, get out of his own head, and focus on the person who’s genuinely there for him. Gus teaches the exact same thing to Hunter, and it is everything he could ever ask for after what he went through in “Hollow Mind.”

Hunter also pays this kindness forward in spades. He goes out of his way to protect Gus from danger, even confronting his own traumas just to save Gus. And, when he sees Gus going through some anxiety himself, Hunter tries to help him with the same breathing techniques Gus taught. It’s a genuinely wholesome moment that kind of makes me even more mad that The Owl House got cut down as badly as it did. We could have gotten MORE scenes of these bros being bros, but instead, we have three episodes left with three hour long specials. Something tells me that brotherly scenes between Gus and Hunter are a bit of an impossibility. Still, I’m glad we got to see these two together. It’s short-lived, but sweet.

Hunter Seeing Through the Fake Willow: It’s also sweet that Hunter can tell a fake Willow when he sees one. Unlike Amity, he’s well aware of how Willow isn’t someone to be messed with. So, he sniffed out that guard’s BS of her being scared in an instant.

Also, don’t think I didn’t notice him still calling her Captain. That’s a pet name in the making if I ever saw one.

Willow Standing Up for Hunter: And awwwwww! Willow standing up to Hunter is so sweet. It proves that even though things didn’t end well between them in “Any Sport in a Storm,” she knows that he’s someone worth trusting. And it’s just SWEET! I love it! Love these two. May they be happy together forever because, let’s be honest, it’s gonna happen.

Alright, that’s enough mushiness. Let’s talk about the best scene in the episode now.

Hexside Fighting Emperor’s Coven: Deep down, I always knew I wanted to see the students of Hexside teaming up to fight the Emperor’s Coven, but seeing it in THIS episode? It was mildly unexpected but VERY appreciated. Seeing everyone work together and combine their spells was awesome, giving me a glimmer of hope that perhaps are favorite characters might do fine in the inevitable showdown against Belos’ forces.

And I will be forever grateful towards whoever is responsible for this beauty.

Gus’ Memories of Insecurities: Unfortunately, while awesomeness is appreciated, it can never last forever. We get some solid angst from Gus here, showing much more of what the opening gave us a peak of. There are expectations for him being skipping a few grades, so when he makes dumb mistakes it crushes him. Thankfully, he had Hunter to pull him out of this pit, returning that same kindness Gus gave him and making everything go full circle. It does a lot for Gus’ character and Hunter’s as well.

Hunter’s First Hug: And just like that, Hunter is part of the main group. Yup. That’s all it takes. Helping your little buddy and getting a hug. And good for him. He needed a hug more than I need a fixed wrist…no, seriously, my wrist is killing me for reasons beyond my comprehension and it’s getting me a little worried at this point.

But enough about me. Hunter’s a main player now, and I’m all for it.

Hunter Explaining to Everyone What’s Happening: And what’s a better main character move than telling everyone you know that everything they know is a lie and that they’re all going to die?

Jokes aside, this is a solid, ominous way to end the episode, making the audience wonder how everyone is going to this shocking news and excited to see what they do with it.

Yet another perfect end to a perfect episode to, let’s be honest, a perfect series.

WHAT I DISLIKED

Did you see how many times I’ve said the word perfect? This episode is a masterpiece. Deal with it.

IN CONCLUSION

“Labyrinth Runners” is yet another A+. It does wonders for Gus’ character, does a great job at bringing Hunter into the main group, and continues to strengthen Willow and Amity’s friendship. I could nitpick…but I don’t feel like it. Just accept that this episode is perfect, and just run with it.

Part 2 - Basic Concepts of Miraculous Ladybug: Kwami

Kwamis are a fun concept and one of the main draws of the series. They make sense story-wise because, firstly, our characters need some support system. And since a lot of conflicts are centred around secret identities, characters should be able to discuss their double life with someone. As magical beings they could also be used to expand the lore, introduce new concepts and drive forward both the plot and character development. It doesn't always happen but Kwamis are a good idea. Some people who write AU's think that Kwamis are redundant, but I have to disagree.

Origins and nature

Where do Kwamis come from? What are they? It's never explained. Oh wait, it was explained in a comic people can accidentally find. You decide to explain the origins and nature of magical beings who are one of the key elements in your magic system and worldbuilding IN A SIDE COMIC, which has zero effect on your main story. Sounds legit.

Here it is.

So, Kwamis are abstract creatures. They can become tangible and interact with the world because of the miraculous jewels. Essentially, each Miraculous acts as an anchor to the material world for Kwami. They existed since the beginning of time and were invisible observers of the universe. Until they settled on Earth and observed how humanity came to be. This is where things get interesting.

Kwamis are the embodiment of abstract concepts. But, some abstract concepts were created by people (like everything mentioned in the comic: beauty, math, love, etc).

Kwamis wanted to help humans. And then, a human, who couldn't see, hear or touch a Kwami creates miraculous jewels. And now these beings can interact with the world, use their powers and grant them to humans. Yet, they are completely under control of their holder. I'll discuss it later, but why did Kwamis accept this deal? They are practically enslaved. At the same time they care about people and generally love humanity.

According to the wiki Kwamis grant powers because of "the privilege of having the ability to be perceived by mortals". What? Did I read that right? Kwamis agreed to be enslaved and used as a power source, because they wanted to interact with material world. That's it, guys, end of the story.

We also know these things about nature and abilities of Kwamis from the show:

1) need food, but only to provide the power for the holder;

2) can't phase through precious metals (Chloe's bracelet in "Rogercop"), their own miraculous and humans;

3) they can control if they phase through things or not – meaning that if they want to, they can (this way Tikki can stay in Marinette’s purse without much trouble and Plagg sleeps on Adrien’s pillow);

4) they can perform magic without a holder but they don’t control it very well, there are certain types of things that they can’t do without a holder;

5) they are immortal but can get sick for some reason, a non-magical reason mind you;

6) technology can't detect them in any way, you can't film, photograph or record their voices (writers establish this many times, but promptly forget all about their own rules in "Optigami", where Marinette talks with Kwamis over the phone without any problems).

If I missed something important, then let me know.

Look, the questions related to origins and motivations of Kwamis might not be very prominent in your story right now, but you must answer them in case you might need to involve these facts in the plot down the line. It's important to avoid contradictions in the serialised story with liquid plot, that can't be set in stone. It's a made up world for the sake of everything sacred! You can make up explanations and rules, of course as long as they don't contradict common sense.

Plausible ideas for origins and nature of Kwamis:

1) Kwamis are immortal spirits, whom humans accidentally summoned and bound with spells to Miraculous stones. They remember their existence before this. This version doesn't really explain their desire to serve people and love for humanity, however. It would be more logical for Kwamis to resent people for enslaving them. It doesn't explain how humans could create those spells and Miraculous stones either.

2) Kwamis are physical manifestations of abstract concepts who existed simply as fragments of matter for a very long time without sentience, until they were accidentally summoned through the Miraculous stones and bound by humans to serve them. Kwamis do not remember their existence before Miraculous. In this version Kwamis serve humans and love them because they have never known a different kind of existence. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any explanation on the creation of Miraculous and spells.

3) Kwamis are gods, who created the universe with all its elements and concepts including humanity (similar to Valar and Maiar in Tolkien's Legendarium). They wanted to help their creations but discovered that their power was too wild and unpredictable for that. So, Kwamis decided to give up their free will and magical independence to help humanity. Together they created Miraculous stones for humans to use and sealed themselves inside. Kwamis as gods were abstract concepts, who didn't have a body. The act of sealing their power in the Miraculous gave them an opportunity to interact with outside world (an anchor) and each Kwami chose an small animal form (because humans easily formed bonds with animals, had animal companions (pets), small animals look non-threatening and familiar). Kwamis intentionally choose certain animal forms to suit the human symbolism. Humans later used magic that Kwamis discovered for them to place spells upon small gods (spells related to identity protection and so on). This version answers most questions, but if Kwamis are gods then powers they grant to people seem to be rather small.

Feel free to add more. I would be interested to hear your ideas.

Identity Protection

In "Origins" we learn that Wayzz can sense the aura of Butterfly Miraculous, a negative aura of activated Butterfly Miraculous, to be more precise. And yet, Tikki and Plagg are genuinely surprised to discover the identities of their holders in "Dark Owl". There are several things wrong with that.

Can Kwamis sense each other's presence? They shouldn't be able to do this to protect the identities of their holders. On the other hand, they are ancient spirits. So, their inability to sense each other seems weird. Unless it's the same situation as with the spell that does not allow them to speak the name of their holder aloud.

But if they can sense each other like Wayzz did, then it means that Plagg and Nooroo were living in the same house for over a year and nothing happened. I mean, Plagg could have just come upstairs, take off the brooch from Gabriel, while he is asleep and return it back to Fu.

This question lies right here, on the surface. And that's only one massive and very obvious plothole. How to fix it? Establish that Kwami can't sense each other for identity protection. In "Origins" Fu meditates on his balcony and Wayzz sees a charged Akuma flying by. That's how they discover that Butterfly is in Paris and the Miraculous is in the wrong hands. Perhaps, Gabriel akumatizes someone for the first time to survey the surroundings and general public is not aware of this. This works better in the narrative, giving Fu time to select holders for Ladybug and Black Cat. It also establishes whether Hawkmoth can remove the Akuma from someone without Ladybug and discharge it. Maybe it depends on the circumstances (sometimes he can, but if this person was akumatized many times or their emotions are too strong and their mind doesn't want to let Akuma go then Hawkmoth can't pull the butterfly out with his magic). This scenario allows for Volpina to happen on "Heroes' Day". Silly recurring Akumas like Gigantitan and Mr. Pigeon could still happen. In this case Gabriel didn't want to akumatize the guy more than 70 times on purpose. It just keeps happening against his better judgement because evil butterflies are automatically attracted to Mr. Ramier. This way repeated attacks of Mr. Pigeon annoy Hawkmoth just as much as they do the heroic duo of Paris (I did not sign up for this Nathalie!).

Let's come back to the spell mentioned earlier for a moment. Kwamis can't say the name of their current holder out loud, but apparently, they can exploit a loophole in the spell by confirming the identity of their holder in another way. The spell doesn't work with other holders. Kwami can say the names of other holders if they know their identity. That being said, can the holder order the Kwami to tell them the identities of other heroes if they know them?

Kwamis know how each Miraculous looks with or without camouflage. Can the holder order the Kwami to tell them how each Miraculous looks in disguise (I liked that Grimoire doesn't have pictures of camouflage for identity protection)? Guardians can recognise Miraculous in any mode (Su Han). Did Fu teach Marinette this? Does she know how each Miraculous looks like unactivated?

Oh! Since we are discussing camouflage, let's take a moment to appreciate the Mother Of All Plotholes. Plagg didn't recognise Peacock because of the plot.

Relationship with Holder

I absolutely loved the idea that Kwamis must obey their holder introduced in "Sandboy". This concept opens tons of plot opportunities. It's such a great idea that makes sense, has potential, can create conflict. Why, oh, why didn't writers develop it more?

Like, it was so good. It can be a great push for character development. This concept resolves so many existing inconsistencies within the plot. It's mind-blowing.

Why can't Nooroo simply leave Gabriel, so that he wouldn't be able to transform? Because Gabriel bound him with Miraculous to always stay near.

In "Sandboy" Tikki asks Marinette's permission before going to the meeting. Plagg lies to Adrien instead. This implies that usually Plagg's holders weren't kind to him or feared his power (Su Han's remark in "Furious Fu"). Perhaps, his holders were taught to keep the Kwami of destruction under constant control. So, Plagg in turn has learned not to ask, because if he doesn't ask permission then his holder can't deny him freedom with magic.

Can Kwami lie to their holder? Maybe they can't lie to their holder about their nature, origins and powers and other Miraculous (but Kwamis can't reveal the location of Miracle Box, Guardian's identity and can't confirm identities of other holders known to them in any way). Kwami would be forced to speak even if they don't want to. That's why Nooroo told Gabriel everything about the abilities of the Butterfly Miraculous and the wish secret of Ladybug and Black Cat.

But Kwamis can lie to their holder according to Plagg in "Sandboy". If Kwamis can lie about everything (including powers) then Nooroo didn't have any reason to be honest with Gabriel way back in "Origins".

Speaking of Gabriel and Nooroo. Can Kwamis harm their holder? Maybe doing so would harm the Kwami as well. Can they do it only when the holder is not wearing the Miraculous? Can Kwami take their Miraculous from their holder? Will they disappear if they try to do so? It seems like Kwami disappears only when the holder takes off the Miraculous with the intention of renouncing power, the words "I renounce you" are not necessary.

Other Kwamis can take the Miraculous from people if it's not their own (Wayzz in "Feast"). But what if it wasn't possible. Imagine what could happen if it's not possible to take the Miraculous by force from the transformed or untransformed hero. Just like Lady WiFi couldn't remove Ladybug's mask. A person has to willingly give up the Miraculous. Only in this case, it's possible to take it. For example, somewhere around the middle of season 3 Hawkmoth could have trapped Ladybug and Chat Noir and cut off any escape routes. His Akuma tries to take both Miraculous, but they don't budge. Then afterwards, every Akuma tries to manipulate the heroes using hostages, illusions or mind control. It's hard to say whether this version will be better than canon, but it's a fascinating theory.

You can use the idea of obedience to create more situations contrasting the relationship of Plagg and Adrien, Gabriel and Nooroo. I liked how canon created a storyline about Plagg learning to control his powers without a holder and Adrien helping him. However, why would you stop here? Give us some flashbacks about Plagg's previous holders, tell us what kind of people they were. Expand the lore and add some character development for Plagg and Adrien. The same thing goes for Marinette. What kind of battles did they have in the past? What kind of people past holders were? Did Ladybug and Black Cat heroes always get along well? Were they allies or enemies? Were they always lovers?

Give us more information about Butterfly and Peacock holders. Perhaps Nooroo has dreams about his past holders who were good people. Show us what kind of things a Butterfly holder with good intentions can do. Tell us more about Duusu and her past holders, sprinkle in a few bits of info about Emilie and Duusu's relationship, just a few vague hints to preserve the mystery. You have a lot of screentime each season and instead of doing filler episodes dedicated to love drama, you can use them for developing minor characters, relationships between them and lore.

Puscilanimous is a fun word. I like that one. I like many words. Too bad I can’t always speak them right.
