no but like kdj thinking himself the source of all his loved ones misery and trying to end his own life to end the oldest dream and bringing his own sword up to fucking kill himself. and its like a grand opening, the final build up of all his self sacrificial tendencies as the curtains are shoved aside and those acts are now plainly revealed to be what it truly is - suicidal. repeated and desperate. attempts. him trying to kill himself. 15 years old and jumping out of a window. 28 and dying over and over again. because kdj lived as if he was living on borrowed time and had never valued his life compared to his loved ones, trading it easily as if his death was an easy bargain.

but of course it isnt.

yoo sangah says, "we're friends."

jung heewon says, "that man is the world i wish to save."

han sooyoung says, "this story is just for that one reader."

and yoo joonghyuk and kimcom reach out and say, "you're kim dokja."

there is no value to a human life because you cannot assign a value to it. the idea of human life being "worth" something is antithetical to orv's anti-capitalist message. so kimcom does not go save him because he is "valuable".

so why does kimcom go out of their way to write the story? why does yjh and biyoo spend countless years scattering kdj's story?

they still dont know him fully, they never can. you cannot know another person entirely even if you read everything about them. they and the world has already been saved, they can move on to a peaceful future. they almost did too. they can let go of grief and someone who probably brought them more pain than anyone else. so why? why for the one they don't know, the 1% they don't have memories of?

because it matters. every bit of him matters. because he is a human life. his story will always matter.

there is no saving someone just because they saved you. there is no transactional value or a simple you did/can do/will this for me so i have to. they are at peace and they will still choose him, to reach and save him. it is unconditional love and endless devotion and it is enough.

kim dokja, you deserve to live. kim dokja, your happiness matters. kim dokja, you are loved.

anyway here’s what happens when music makes me think orv things

* Running up that hill (a deal with God)

This makes me think about the demon king arc where Kdj and Yjh fought over who would become the demon king. First thing that came to mind was how Kdj refused to let Yjh become the demon king now this might be because that rat bastard always has a plan and had to become the demon king for his plan but what if another reason is because Kdj couldn’t bear killing Yjh. Yjh’s story was the reason Kdj survived for so long. He kept reading his story for years (like 10? idr) and that motivated him to survive.

From thinking ‘what would yjh do?’as a kid and still thinking what would HIS protagonist do when the scenarios started. Now how could kdj bear to kill his protagonist, the one that brought moments of joy to his life, the one he grew up with, hell his reason (reason for what? that’s up to readers’ but I see yjh as one of kdj’s reasons to live). I think kdj would rather swap places with yjh if it gave yjh even the teeniest moment of relief because well he’s kdj’s (they’re life and death companions your honour).

Another thing this song makes my brain twerk about is yjh. Yjh wanted to become the demon king so kimcom would have to kill him right? Now this sounds a bit eh because he can regress and all but remember yjh told kdj that he could take their companions to the end of the scenarios.

Yjh cares about his companions so much he’s willing to sacrifice himself to save them even if it means he won’t be with them ( shoutout my puppy boy 999) Yjh wanted to swap places with kdj because he believed kdj was the one that could help their companions survive, he’s the one that could protect their companions and make it to the last scenario with them without losing anyone (someone give my boy a hug and some tea please).

Also what if yjh was tired of seeing kdj sacrifice himself (rat keeps dying and damn) and wanted to protect him, to help him see he doesn’t need to keep sacrificing himself and what better way than to sacrifice yourself?? Yjh willing to swap places with kdj to protect him, to put a rest to his endless sacrifices, as a form of companionship (get you a companion that goes through mind breaking scenarios for you).

Honourable mention to Sp btw. I’ve not gotten here in the novel but I’ve seen the ‘why him not me’ line enough that I can’t ignore it. Sp who wonders why kdj chose yjh of the 3rd round instead of him, the yjh kdj grew up with (is he? I got this info from twitter so I’m not 100% sure and I’m not done reading).

I believe sp wants to be by kdj’s side (man’s got a book filled with all kdj’s comments my guy) and with that desire to be by the one that’s been with you from the very beginning (I’m referring to kdj being by the sole reader of twsa and basically experiencing the scenarios as a reader)

I like to imagine if sp had the chance, he’d swap places with yjh (GO FULL ON SCARLET WITCH BABES) I know I’d sure want to switch places cause damn this is the person that’s loved me and stood by me even when I was just a webnovel. This person looks up to me when in trouble and cherishes me to the point of sacrifice now why in hell wouldn’t I want to be by their side??

thinking about the ship of theseus as a concept and how it applies to kdj. how much of yourself can you cut away before you cant be called the same person anymore. how many times can you kill yourself before there stops being enough of you to be killed. how much of yourself can you tear into pieces and throw away before the callousness with which you do it becomes a fixed apathy. how many repairs can be made to the ship of theseus before it stops being his.

honestly feel like it applies to yhk in general really well too. han sooyoung and her avatars in a literal sense since she is quite literally sectioning herself off into pieces whenever she uses the skill; yoo joonghyuk more metaphorically since we see in the 1863rd round whats basically like. the stripped to nothing recognizable ship now returned to theseus (kdj). but i feel like with kdj its just The Worst because we look at the scenarios themselves and like kdjs half performative half genuine flippant reveals of his deepest traumas and at his thinly veiled suicide attempts (sacrifices) are just. hello? i mean each one of those just guts him further and further and we see the literal actual fourth wall continue thickening to the point where (given we observe in kcoms pov) who is kim dokja? whats left after you peel back all the skins hes discarded? what makes the ship of theseus the ship of theseus?

and then you throw in the sucker punch of the 49/51 debacle and the question stops being like a vague overhanging vibe to the story and instead becomes the focal point of it: how much of a person can you strip away before they stop being the person you know? and i really truly think orv answers this. it answers it in the most beautiful way possible and the answer is that if theseus loves the ship. its his ship. the ship of theseus can be 1% original parts, it can be 49%, it can be 99%, it doesnt matter. the ship of theseus is theseus' ship because he loves it and as long as it continues to be loved it will continue to sail under his name.

and idk. i think about that a lot. people love you regardless of how much they know about you and thats the point. being known often precludes being loved but sometimes people know you because they love you. the ship of theseus is his because he loves it. yeah.

wait WAAAAAAIT. realization about orv def spoilers below

okay so we know that theres the whole situation with OD creating the universe of the world we see in orv. right. and his beliefs and impressions of the story created it, then at the end all the readers and dokjas out there create the story through their imagination and belief- they make it real.

ive already mentioned how this mirrors his mothers book, but let me take that one step further. because its what od wanted to believe, reality itself may have actually been bent for our main kdj. it may have genuinely not been how the situation happened until his mother, now a character but a character only insofar as every character is (as so much of orv is about becoming real and becoming fiction), decides to make this truth the reality by convincing our kdj of it.

the problem with this theory is that because of kdj's unreliable pov, we cant know if this is what happened or if he was just in denial. its the whole 'everything in the universe was created five minutes ago by a guy named steve who made it impossible to tell by fabricating memory etc' philosophical conundrum- it cant be proven or disproven. from a philosophical standpoint its useless.

but i think its also very interesting from the perspective that this, orv, is a novel. its a story. and to each reader that stops at some point, what they know of the characters up until then is a real version of them. which means that metatextually, through kdj's unreliable pov and the fact this gets revealed at some point, the story and therefore his reality does materially change.

our kdj has always been a self insert character. and a reader. and orv plays off of the nature of reading so beautifully in all possibke readings of it i SWEAR im going to bite something

A year has already passed since my transmigration into this web novel.

A year of struggling not to fall into anxiety at my current reality as the emperor of a fictional kingdom, a year of fooling my own people that I was perfectly hale and healthy and not going insane at my own transmigration, and a year of me having to figure out just what I could do so I wouldn't accidentally set myself up with a death flag with the smallest of actions.

One damn year, and the heroine could finally take my dangerous knight commander away so I didn't have to keep being under his watchful eye, and they could have their happy ending.

For all that I'd read what felt like a million webnovels in my original life, and for all that I loved certain tropes enough to read them over and over in different stories, I could still remember the plot for this novel I'd been thrown into.

It was typical, for a romance fantasy fiction.

The heroine was a saintess born into the life of a commoner, with a heart of gold intent on serving the people. Her male lead was the cold and unfaltering Knight Commander, the youngest person to have ever received such a title in the empire, and her childhood friend. Both people skilled on opposing sides—one in saving lives, with the other in taking them—yet with loyalty similarly sworn to the kingdom.

And between them was the emperor, who sought to have the saintess to himself. For power? For love? For sheer greed?

I had no idea. I wasn't able to finish the webnovel, considering how it had been ongoing the last time I read it.

"Your Majesty. Stop shaking your leg."

I stopped shaking my leg, realizing a little too late that I'd been doing it at all. "I admire your gall to tell your emperor what to do," I said, frowning when I gave Joonghyuk a look. "Can't you guard me from the outside?"

"You have a window behind you."

"If I die, I die."

Joonghyuk scowled at me. Somehow, he could still look handsome while making such an ugly expression. "Your Majesty. I don't appreciate such jokes."

Oh, but were they really jokes? Maybe I could go back to my original world if I die. It wasn't like I was brave enough to test it out myself, so if someone else could do me a favor...

I smiled. Well, there was no point to thinking such things when my Knight Commander was so scarily efficient with his work.

"My apologies. I'll try to be more tasteful with my jokes next time."

"Please don't joke at all."

"Ah, but where's the fun in that," I sighed, finishing signing off on a document about opening an investigation for a potentially corrupt baron. "You are boring enough as is, Joonghyuk-ah. I can't let you get any more boring when you're with me."

He raised a brow. "Is that why you've set up a ball for me."

It wasn't even a question. This guy really was a weirdo, regardless of his status as the male lead.

"You're my favorite knight," I teased, putting my pen down so I could rest my cheek into my upright palm. "Isn't it only fair to celebrate you and your achievements?"

"You wish to marry me off."

"I wish to see you happy."

I received a mysterious look in response. If this series were a webtoon, then perhaps I'd have a better chance at deciphering his expressions, but it had yet to be adapted into comic form when I read it.

Ah, really. This guy was the one who made things so much more difficult for me than they needed to be. At least Lee Seolhwa was easier to deal with, given her prioritization of healing as a practice.

"How about Your Majesty?"

I cocked my head to one side in question. "What about me?"

"If marriage equates to happiness, I don't understand why you haven't chosen your own spouse yet."

I wanted to tell him that I had no right to such happiness in a world that isn't mine. That I didn't deserve to create a family here, when there was still a chance of me going back. That I wasn't meant for marriage at all.

But I couldn't.

So I said, "Your happiness is enough for me, Joonghyuk-ah."

"Is that so."

"Yes."

He gave me a long look. Again, it was difficult for me to decipher.

"Then you will not question my choice later," he said.

I blinked at him, then smiled widely. Of course, it was like that. Yoo Joonghyuk has known Lee Seolhwa for long enough even before my transmigration that he must have built up such feelings for her even without my meddling. He must be wary that his emperor would feel envious of his choice, right?

But I wasn't that emperor from the original novel. I wouldn't interfere with their happiness.

"I won't, Joonghyuk-ah."

He nodded.

Was it just me, or was he smiling a little?

"Good to know, Your Majesty."

I should have taken his words for the warning that they were. I should have realized that something was wrong from the start.

If I had prepared myself better, I would've known what to say now that my Knight Commander was kneeling in front of me.

This couldn't have been in the novel at all. The ball itself might not have been prepared by the emperor in the original novel, but surely, such a change couldn't have led to something this insane?

"I told you," he said, taking my hand closer to press a kiss upon my gloved knuckles. He didn't seem to mind the increase in volume from everyone else's gossiping and murmuring. "You are the person I want as my spouse. Did you not say?"

His eyes, dark and deep as they were, glinted brightly under the chandelier lights.

"You won't question my choice, Your Majesty."

its just so... fulfilling. theres so many layers. whenever i analyze smth about it one way suddenly i realize that it can also mean something else. and oh my god. “the story changed every time i read it. it was over but it wasn’t over. the story wouldn’t end unless the reader gave up on the story”. BRO. KDJ SAID THAT. AND KDJ IS A READER. US. THE READER. WE ARE KDJ. ARGH. someone pls stop me before I spiral into the abyss (jk u cant). i wont say orv is absolute perfection. i believe that everything is flawed- orv has its share of problems. the complexity, the length, bad eng translations etc. however, i think its as close as it gets. how you know a book is good is that when you put it down, the story doesn’t end. the pages keep turning in your mind. you think about it for days, weeks and sometimes even months on end. orv gives me that feeling. it carves out a place in my heart without me knowing and leaves me feeling empty yet fulfilled at the same time. rah. i feel.... fulfilled.... just... like kdj.... orv is his fulfillment.... to become.... the protagonist..... to save...... people.... to have friends.... companions..... and even as much of a foreign concept to him, happiness. and..... grrr i have so many thoughts. ill continue this a later time.

!!!OPTIONAL INFODUMP ON HOW KINGDOM TWO CROWNS WORKS!!!!

Ok so first things first for anyone who doesnt know what kingdom two crowns is its a side scrolling videogame where you play as a monarch rebuilding your kingdom from scratch and every night these monsters called the greed cone out of portals to attack you, and they slowly get stronger. They take your money, and can turn your workers into homeless peasants by stealing their money. You 'die' if the greed steal your crown. You move through different islands by repairing your ship and each island will have stronger mounts or hermits which can help you (and these are unlocked with gems). Every island will have a final portal that defeating will stop the greed from returning on that island. You cant beat the first island without going to different islands first (as far as ik anyway).

!!!AU STARTING HERE!!

Yjh as the monarch rebuilding/building a kingdom ti fight against the greed. Kdj as one of the hermits/ the dude who will hold onto your gems for you. The vibes im feeling are yjh struggling in what feels like a hopeless battle, exploring ruins to find anything that could help his kingdom survive. Hes just repaired his boat to move on to another island in search of a stronger mount when kdj appears wearing a cloak and looking sketchy af. Yjh still has some gems on him and kdj, with his untrustworthy smile, offers to hold onto them for him. Yjh is suprised bc in all his regressions (yea, regression is happening :/) hes never seen kdj. Yjh doesnt trust kdj or believe him about holding onto his gems, but he wants to know why kdj has nvr appeared b4 so he asks kdj to join him. Kdj is like nah, and blah blah eventually yjh ends up giving kdj 1 gem to see what happens. He thinks worst case scenario hell just start over. Then next island yjh cant find kdj again for weeks and hes pissed. But then kdj appears again by that half rebuilt boat with that grin of his and with yjhs gem.

And kdj stays there, offer always open to hold onto the gems. Sometimes kdj will even offer yjh advice. Advice that turns out to be life-saving. Anyways so yjh gets attached to the mysterious man, and everytime he travels to a new island he is worried about kdj not reappearing. But he always does.

Hmm ok so why dont the greed chase kdj? Bc hes a wizard, magical boy, whatever, and can cast a spell that makes him hidden from the world, so he can watch as an observer. Before the regressions began, kdj lived in the woods with his mom. Non of the cannon trauma, kdj's dad was killed when he was young bc kdj's mom was a witch and modern laws and law enforcement werent there so he dead b4 kdj can rlly remmeber him. However we do have some trauma with how isolated kdj was and also his mom was shunned from the current kingdom (of which yjh was the prince) for being a witch and idk ppl also probably tried to kill them for that and all. So that means that the hidding magic is one of the first things kdj is taught. Bc he had to use it so often he can cast this spell w/out a book or other ritual aids, but all other spells he needs extra materials for andd his spellbook. So that means he totally gets yjh to essentially go on fetch quests for him with the reward of stuff like "strengthened city walls", or "a boutiful harvest".

Anyways, back to the backstory, when kdj becomes an adult, he goes off on his own, wandering through the woods and being a hermit, collecting books/exploring ruins and avoiding ppl bc he has trust issues ofc. Hmm, need an origin story for the greed, do they appear out of nowhere? Ummm, so one day the earth trumbles and the air crunches and outside of the kingdom black rocks fly together to form arcs, and with a firey woosh purple illusory flames appear inside the arcs, and out of these portals run these black and oily child sized figures which begin to wreak havoc and the apocalypse starts.

Yjh cannot even begin to save his kingdom this first time because its so sudden, hes caught up in the havoc of just trying to survive like everyone else. Then, just as hes about to pass out from blood loss or smthing, a cloaked figure appears before him and asks him "do you want to save your kingdom?" When yjh blearily answers yes, kdj smiles and says cryptically "many have failed, but perhaps, you will be different".

So then yjh blacks out and bc he was dying he forgets this. Kdj takes him away and heals him, then leaves him somewhere safe with only his crown and a horse to try and rebuild and survive. He fails, and when he dies he wakes up again with only his crown and a horse. He doesnt remmeber kdj.

Okay okay more backstory time, not only was kdjs mom a witch, but also their family are some of the only ones who had records of and knew about the coming apocalypse, some generations try and stop it, others mearly standby. So when it comes around again kdj decides he wants to try and help, that maybe this time will be different, and will end the apocalypse for good.

So yjh continues on, this mysterious yet helpful man coming and going, working to defeat a the portals on every island. Finally he makes it back to very first island, where it all began. This time when he goes to attack the last portal, kdj appears and tags along. Used to kdjs sporadic and confusing behavior, yjh thinks nothing of it.

But at the end of this final portal, on the very first island, is the king who was supposed to be dead. Yjh looks at the father he barely knows or recognizes with horror, and, the truth beggining to dawn on him, anger. The truth of the apocalypse was that it was always caused by a previous king who had defeated the previous apocalypse and, in the height of their kingdom and success, become corrupt with greed, until when they die their spirits cant accept it and they bring about the apocalypse once again. This is the secret that kdjs family knew, and he helped yjh not knowing him but hoping he would be different. And he was right, yjh would be different.

Anyways after that yjh forces kdj to come back with him, and having helped in the fight kdj is too exhausted to actually fight or run away like he ussually does and then they live happily ever after in their kingdom (yjh gives kdj a crown and makes him a ruler as well, claiming that kdj helped just as much but we all know the real reason he does that is bc he wants kdj to stay and also ppl will think theyre married which yjh does not mind).

I forgot to add but the reason kdj only appeared after a couple regressions is bc of that underlying fear from his youth about ppl hating him. And the only reason he appears at all is bc he wants to help and finally decides to risk trying it.

been reading some theories and like i love the idea so much about kim dokja being a co-author to orv, because that means i think everybody in the main trio was a co-author at some point now, possible even everyone in KimCo as well as others who have helped them

1863!revised HSY started writing TWSA in order to save KDJ → but the epilogue was never finished before her ego got integrated into her subconscious → then events of ORV starts (which everything we have been reading was actually recorded this whole time by 1864 HSY) but this was not fully completed by herself this time unlike the first time she wrote TWSA. in the epilogue she notes she actually had to get help from everyone they've met, extracting their fables and asking them to recount their experiences of everything up till now. then at some point she wasn't able to continue writing and YJH had to continue writing his own parts in when he was in space, maybe he even edited some parts where his point of view was needed, and then finally after KDJ wakes up, as the last piece of the final puzzle, he finishes writing the story together with them probably after he recovered, filling in his own point of view on parts that only he would know (which is a lot as he is the main character)

i just love how this was a story started by one person that was only able to be completed with the help of many people, something that would not be possible if KDJ wasn't able to help all of them as he did. it was written with love to bring back/save one person (KDJ) and when he did eventually come back as implied by the ending, he wrote the epilogue in a way that made it so that it was to save the reader (us). rephrasing the beginning texts of TWSA in order to tell the reader that they will be able to survive, just as he was able to survive

also. like i still cant stop thinking about the 0 turn, like i keep thinking is that right? did i read this right? did YJH really choose to regress of own his volition just so he could meet KDJ? like that was the beginning of his regressions right? i kept thinking why? why would he choose to leave his perfect happy ending and go through the hellish scenarios again over and over, granted that the scenarios will be hellish because he loses all memories and KDJ isnt there to help him, just to meet him?

i dont think i'll ever fully understand and i think maybe YJH doesn't understand either, and maybe thats fine and thats just how it is. maybe deep down he feels like KDJ should be a part of his happy ending, like physically a part of it, rather than just an observer or a constellation watching them live it (paralleling the 1864th ending with him watching his avatar live happy with KimCo) since if it wasn't for KDJ, they would not have lived happily ever after. maybe its just how YJH loves, i dont know. i mean even after they finish the 1865th turn and go back to normal lives, YJH literally becomes so restless and unable to do anything with himself that he becomes a terrorist to take the Ark and implying to go to another worldline to find KDJ again. AGAIN. like he was literally haggard and disheveled looking and couldnt even keep up his gamer job because maybe he felt like his happy ending wasnt complete without that idiot(?) he was willing to, and actually did, lose more years of his life going to space, for like an indefinite amount of time, and he knew this, he fucking knew this, and just like the first time he accepted the regression stigma, he went in the great beyond anyway just to find KDJ again. that is insanely absurd to me like explosions are going off rn

oh and actuallt wait no he wasnt alone, the group regression thing by itself was literally insane and also YJH reading ORV written by HSY with others really helped him cope with the burden he placed on himself, as hes the only one capable of doing the impossible (like KDJ with ressurecting)

it also kinda parallels with HSY again as she was initially alone when writing TWSA for KDJ (um i guess the dokkaebi king was with her too but like... that doesnt count cuz there isnt really a solid bond, more like employer and employee thing) which took up many years, and then she writes ORV with everyone's help later on which i think absolutely helped her and everyone cope with KDJ's absence. HSY lost many years of her life writing for one man, including the Kaixenix arc, just like how YJH lost years of his life fighting for one man while KDJ lost many years of his life sacrificing himself for everyone, by doing what he knows best, reading, to keep their stories alive while they lived out their happy ending. i think i am literally just talking in a loop now but when it comes to these 3 the parallels and symbolism are so insane with how interconnected and almost symbiotic everything is

when I started shipping them: cool story. i started shipping zukka organically, like a month after finishing the show (and the comics). i found myself thinking about them more and more often, and then one day i was like "i wonder what their ship name would be. probably zukka. i bet the tumblr ppl like this ship". and i was right
