Hypericum perforatum, known as St John's wort or "valsamo" in Greek, growing wild. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey The primary phytochemical constituents of St John's wort are hyperforin and hypericin. The red, oily extract of H. perforatum has been used in the treatment of wounds for millennia, including by the Knights Hospitaller, the Order of St John, after battles in the Crusades, which is most likely where the name came from. #hypericum #hypericumperforatum #stjohnswort #plantallies #myherbalstudies #infusedoils #herbaleducation #urbanforaging #greekflora #foraging #aromatherapy #essentialoils #herbalmedicine #herbnerd #botany #apothecary  #plantmedicine #herbalist #herbalhealing  #plantallies  #asteraceae #majestic_macros #herbalhealingoil #herbalhealing Photo taken by me, all rights reserved. A beautiful and underrated topical healer (though photosensitizing), St. John's Wort is a long-time fave. Gold rutilated quartz for the flower, blood red garnet for the hypericin constituent 🤓 The perforation part didn't quite translate into the silver, but we know they're there ;) https://www.etsy.com/listing/540710608/hypericum-perforatum-st-johns-wort

Day 1 of St. John’s Wort infusion... 🌼 Medicine making with St.John’s Wort is pure magic! 💫 These sunshine-yellow wildflowers will turn this organic olive oil scarlet red within a few days, and it will become even deeper, richer, and thicker after a few weeks. For the first few days of the infusion, I keep it outdoors (covered) in direct sunlight so that it can absorb the warmth and energy of the sun ☀️ before bringing the medicinal oil indoors to further infuse in a windowsill. I’ll post the end result soon (which is nothing short of amazing), so stay tuned! #stjohnswort #hypericumperforatum #wildmedicine #stjohnswortflowers #herbalism #herbalmedicine #stjohnswortoil #herbaloil #herbaloilmaking #diyherbalmedicine #diynatural #diynaturalproducts #naturalmedicine #naturalmedicinemaking #diynaturalmedicine #stjoanswort #stjohnswortmedicine #herbalmedicinemaking #herbharvest #stjohnswortharvest #wildharvest #wildgathering #wildharvested #wildharvesting #wildflowers #wildplants #fawnlilybotanica https://www.instagram.com/p/CSxCtEDpq24/?utm_medium=tumblr

Have I ever told you about the Sambucas I meet once, that was stories high? Here it’s is! Finally got to see pictures from a friend who joined me on a trip to Greece last year. So exciting! I just can’t with this Elder tree!!An Elder so ancient it’s roots spread up + down the spring fed stream all way the up the mountain. This Elder that was positioned not at a random spring house, no, a site had ten springs houses nestled in an old growth Beech forest. I cant even explain the aroma that engulfed the air. It was intoxicating. The elder flower just took over us. Seriously just overtaken by the traditions that’s upheld there, that are land based & connected to plants, mushrooms and water. An addition to me overjoyed to have met this beautiful Elder I’ll share some photos of my time spent in the cute mountain city of #florinagreece. This city is 20 minutes from the village where my family lives and most recently is stemmed from. I always visit the farm markets, and of course, you know I must support the Yiayias selling their foraged herbs, foods and eggs. I bought some #hypericumperforatum aka St. John’s Wort aka Vasilohorto, Βασιλωχόρτο and Chamomile as well. Snagged some purslane too from another vendor! We then met up with a friend at a cute cafe called @kafeneio_amanitis yes the cafe is called Amanita! The food and vibe it’s real there y’all. Come through! I’m so grateful to be able to spend moments in time and space in this part of the world. What a dang privilege. I hope to be able to continue to learn about my ancestral home & lands, the traditions and the history, oh yea and the food, fermented goods, dance and music too! Can’t leave those out! I grew up coming here and not understanding what that meant. Over time we went less and not as the whole family anymore. That’s a whole other story. ;) Come love this land & culture with me! Hypericum perforatum (Hypericaceae family)
Today we are celebrating St John's Wort Day! The ancient Greeks used the plant to worship the sun as it tends to flower at the time of the summer solstice. The Druids, Celts and Romans burnt it on bonfires to celebrate the midsummer festival. This wonderful herb blossoms and is harvested around St John's Feast Day on 24 June (hence the name St John's Wort). The herb would be hung on doors to ward off evil spirits and provide protection against harm and sickness to man and livestock. The genus name 'Hypericum' derives from the Greek words hyper (above) and eikon (picture), refering to the tradition of hanging the herb over religious icons during Midsummer Day. The leaves of the herb have tiny translucent oil glands and so its second latin name, 'perforatum', refers to this perforated appearance visible when you hold the leaf up to the light.
Hypericum has got many healing properties, however, it is now mostly known and extensively researched for its mood uplifting properties and its use in mild and moderate depression. St John's Wort complex chemistry has effects on many neurotransmitters including serotonin, dopamine and noradrenalin, which affect mood. It is also a useful liver and gallbladder tonic as it helps stimulate bile flow and eases liver stagnation. Despite its many benefits the herb should NOT be taken alongside any prescription medication due to possible interactions. As such, it must not be taken on antidepressants, contraceptive pills, warfarin, heart medications etc.
Externally, the red oil or extract of Hypericum has been used in the treatment of cuts, wounds, burns, neuralgia (nerve pain), tired and aching muscles, stiff joints, cold sores, chicken pox and shingles. It has anti-inflammatory activity and used topically it can be a helpful lightweight painkiller. However do not use it on sunny days as it might cause photosensitivity!
One of the most researched chemical costituents found in Hypericum perforatum is hypericin, an anthraquinone-derived pigment responsible for the red color of St John's Wort oil. Hypericin is found in the flowers, particularly in the black dots located along the petals. Other active substances found in St John's Wort are: hyperforin, flavonoids (such as luteolin, kaempferol, quercetin, hyperoside, rutin, myricetin, hyperin), phenolic acids, tannins and essential oils.
Unfortunately, Hypericum is not friendly to animals such as horses, sheep, goats, and cattle and if consumed in large doses it can cause photosensitization, severe skin irritation, restlessness, central nervous system depression or abortion.
And here is a short poem from an anonymous manuscript, c. 1400, describing St John's Wort use as a safeguard against evil spirits:
"St. John’s wort doth charm all witches away If gathered at midnight on the saint’s holy day. Any devils and witches have no power to harm Those that gather the plant for a charm: Rub the lintels and post with that red juicy flower No thunder nor tempest will then have the power To hurt or hinder your houses: and bind Round your neck a charm of similar kind."

Yes, that's a Hypericum species. Not the H.perforatum however! Read more below. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Hypericum triquetrifolium, commonly called curled-leaved St. John's-wort, is a species of plant of the family Hypericaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean Basin, and these days can be found wild all over Greece. What we want is hypericin, and that's present at the largest concentration in H.perforatum. This species also contains an amount, but probably not enough for the healing & anti-depressant effect. A study showed that this herb contains apigenin-7-O-glyucoside. Hypericum genus (Hypericaceae) encompasses 465 species distributed worldwide. Results of yesterday's labor. There's a whole lot of houndstongue that won't be scattering seed along our lake shore now. Filled a 13 gal bag on the section I have been taking care of for years now, and a 30 gal bag on the new section. I think one more 30 gal bag will get the rest of it. *sigh* There was only one #StJohnswort plant, but now is the time to get it under control. I clipped the thistle heads and got some of the knapweed. I will deal with the ox-eye daisy next year. It's called triage. #hypericumperforatum #cynoglossumofficinale #circiumvulgare #circiumarvense #leucanthemumvulgare https://www.instagram.com/p/CC2O-ylgMzj/?igshid=1g1k3lgy4yrfb
