Geranium molle, growing wild! Read more below about this fascinating herb. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Its common name is Dovefoot Geranium, or Dove's-foot Crane's-bill. Nicholas Culpeper in his herbal of 1652 suggested a variety of uses for G. molle, including the treatment of internal and external injuries. A note was made that the bruised leaf healed external injuries faster. A decoction in wine was said to relieve gout and other joint pains. The plant is considered to be anodyne, astringent and vulnerary. In fact, you can use it as a tannin in herbal formulas, along with Quercus and Capsella.  The bees LOVE the plant. It actually produces a kind of dark pollen. Geranium molle is a small plant reaching on average 5–30 centimetres (2.0–11.8 in) in height. It is a very branched plant, quite hairy, with several ascending stems. The leaves are palmate, cut 5 to 9 times. The basal leaves are arranged in a rosette, the upper ones are sessile, rounded and hairy, with a long petiole of about 5–12 millimetres (0.20–0.47 in).  The flowers are pinkish-purple, 8–12 mm in diameter, with very jagged petals. It blooms from April to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite and mainly pollinated by Hymenoptera. Fruits are glabrous, usually with 6-9 transverse ridges. Saltwort (called "almyra" in Greek) growing wild on the beach. Read more below about the fascinating history of that plant! Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey Young leaves and stems can be eaten raw or cooked. The leaves can be used as a spinach substitute or added in small quantities to salads. The seed is edible too. It can be ground into a meal and used as a gruel, thickener in soups etc., or added to cereal flours when making bread. However, the seed is small and hard to collect any quantity. The ashes of the burnt plant are used for making glass and soap. At one time large quantities of the ashes were imported into Britain for this purpose, but nowadays a chemical process using salt is employed. The ashes can also be used as a cleaner for fabrics.  #salsola #saltwort #glasswort #greekbeaches #wildmedicine #wildgourmet #greekflora #greekherbs #herbnerd #wildherbs #botany #botanicalmedicine #medicinalherbs #myherbalstudies #healingherbs #foraging #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalremedies #primitiveskills #survivalskills #urbanherbalist #herbalremedies #apothecary #ethnobotany #ethnobotanist Text credit: Wikipedia & pfaf. Read about the ancient Greek myth that surrounds the plant Smilax aspera (its berries are now everywhere): Smilax, according to an ancient myth, was a very beautiful nymph, who fell in love with the mortal Spartan Crocus. However, there was a slight problem: God Hermes also fell in love with Crocus! Disappointed, he transformed the guy into the well-known saffron plant. Then, goddess Aphrodite transformed the sad nymph into a fragrant creeper that will bloom at the same time as the crocus. In our herbal medicine course, I promise to tell stories with much happier endings! See more at bit.ly/votanotherapeia The plant is know as arkoudovatos in Greek, and it is edible. It is sometimes sold as sarsaparilla. Euphorbia helioscopia, the sun spurge, growing wild on the hill above my school. Read more below about this fascinating herb. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey It is a herbaceous annual plant, native to most of Europe, northern Africa, and eastward through most of Asia. Folk names include wart spurge, umbrella milkweed and madwoman's milk. In Chinese medicine, it is known as ze qi. It belongs to the category " Herbs that Transform Phlegm and Stop Coughing". It is used externally (e.g. in scrofula ointments) and internally. However, it does have some toxicity, and caution is needed. The sap contains a latex which is toxic on ingestion and highly irritant externally, causing photosensitive skin reactions and severe inflammation, especially on contact with eyes or open cuts. The toxicity can remain high even in dried plant material (pfaf.org). According to Dan Bensky: "An interesting food therapy for abdominal edema and ascites, noted by the contemporary physician Zhou FengWu, calls for the patient to boil two eggs in water with 15g of Euphorbiae helioscopiae Herba (ze' qi). The liquid is discarded and the eggs are eaten. This is to be repeated daily. He also had some concerns about this herb, noting, "Generally, the dosage should not be high, as overdosage can lead to adverse reactions such as pallor, weakness of the limbs, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting."  Photo taken by me, all rights reserved. #euphorbia #euphorbiahelioscopia #sunspurge #toxicplants #toxicherbs #poisonousplants #chineseherbs #tcm #chineseherbalmedicine #traditionalchinesemedicine #wildmedicine #greekflora #greekherbs #herbnerd #wildherbs #botany #botanicalmedicine #medicinalherbs #myherbalstudies #healingherbs #foraging #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalremedies #primitiveskills #survivalskills #urbanherbalist #herbalremedies #apothecary #ethnobotany #ethnobotanist (at Athens, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChZIyn9LC-3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This is Hibiscus syriacus, known as "iviskos" in Greece, and its petals are EDIBLE!  Looking to preserve and use more wild, free food? In our course: https://bit.ly/texnologiatrofimon you will learn everything from pickles to fermentation and smoke curing.  This is a species of flowering plant in the mallow family, Malvaceae. The leaf and the flowers are edible - try adding them in salads! You can also dry them and use them in teas. H. syriacus has 5-petaled flowers (to 7.5 cm or 3 inches diameter) in solid colors of white, red, purple, mauve, violet, or blue, or bicolors with a different colored throat, depending upon the cultivar. Extending from the base of these five petals is the pistil at the center, with the stamen around it. These basic characteristics give the H. syriacus flower and its many variants their distinctive form. The plant can bloom continuously from July through September, usually at night. The 10-centimetre-wide (4-inch), single- or double-flowering, large-petaled, very showy flowers adorn the plant throughout the summer. With maturity, flexible plant stems become weighted under the load of prolific summer flowers, and bend over halfway to the ground. #herbaleducation #hibiscus #hibiscussyriacus #rosemallow #edibleflowers #medicinalplants #myherbalstudies #wildfoodlove #wildfood #myherbalstudies #botany #greekflora #greekfood #wildherbs #foragingforfood #plantallies #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalremedies  #foraging #plantallies #malvaceae  Text credit: Wikipedia (at Athens, Greece) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChHCjdfrpvI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
