I cannot overstate the content warnings for starvation, desperation, and harm to children for this BBC article about conditions in Afghanistan:

International sanctions aren't hurting "the Taliban", they are murdering the children of Afghanistan. They are murdering the elderly of Afghanistan. Sanctions never hurt the people in power, who will always find a way to get the things they need, but instead hurt the most vulnerable people in a nation: babies and children, disabled people, elderly people, racial and ethnic minorities.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) officials, the diseases include meningitis, jaundice, impetigo, chickenpox and upper respiratory infections.

Dr. Darien Sutton spoke on the cases of jaundice and Hepatitis A in the last week. With his words in mind many in the comments started to point out the appearance of several journalists in Gaza and how drastically their appearances have changed since Oct 7th. It's likely many of them have jaundice. He speaks about the many cases of diarrhoea sweeping through Gaza as well which the above article also speaks about.

Diarrhoea is so deadly for young children especially and they are suffering the most from it with the elderly not far behind. Replacing fluids is essential for combating diarrhoea but the people of Gaza don't have access to drinkable water. Food and nutrition is also something the body needs to fight off illness which is another thing they don't have in abundance or at all. So many things are happening at once and as the WHO and other organisations warn, these diseases plus thirst and starvation could end up killing more Palestinians than the airstrikes.

Doctors Without Borders is one organisation you can donate to (not just for Gaza) or repost and share the link if you're unable.

The numbers in all categories are staggering and the crises unprecedented given the short amount of time that has passed. There are thousands of aid trucks sitting idle on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border that need to get in and the UN is set to vote on this today, December 21st, if there are no further delays.

The US and Israel don't want to concede to another ceasefire but logically the aid can't get to where it needs to go effectively without one. Keep calling for it LOUDLY.

Biden is set to announce a new security assistance package worth $400 million for Ukraine.

Which is about $40 billion in aid …. When you add other country’s contributions.

Protection of children from sale and sexual exploitation following humanitarian crises due to natural disasters.

With the increase in natural disasters due to climate change and the severe humanitarian crises caused by armed conflicts, the fourth Special Rapporteur, Ms Najat Maalla M’jid, focused her attention on the vulnerability of children to sale and sexual exploitation in such scenarios. An initial pinpointed problem wasthe absence of a comprehensive framework for the coordination and allocation of roles and responsibilities of multiple international and local responders, which frequently leads to confusion, unnecessary duplication of efforts and substantial protection gaps.

The lack of experience of first and second responders is also of particular worry, and the Special Rapporteur called for the creation of child protection officers within humanitarian response teams. All the relevant staff should receive comprehensive training on child protection in a natural disaster. From these general concerns, the Special Rapporteur additionally detailed all the aspects of the response to a humanitarian crisis which needed to be addressed. Firstly, she underlined that the lack of registration of children, prior to and following a disaster, increases the risk of them being sold, exploited or illegally removed from their families and communities. The Special Rapporteur further emphasised the importance of creating safe spaces for children in temporary shelters or camps with the availability of child-friendly reporting/ complaint mechanisms. Thirdly, she noted the need for appropriate care and treatment, which should be family- or community-based when feasible. A final point made by the Special Rapporteur was that national or international adoption should not be permitted until comprehensive analyses were made of the suitability of the children for adoption. International adoptions should only be a last resort and be in compliance with the 1993 Hague Convention on Inter-Country Adoption.
