top ten favorite bands/musicians tag game

This is really difficult, but lemme see...

Joelistics - an Australian hip-hop artist, his solo work is about politics, story-telling, and is very self-reflective. Seamans Lullaby, In the Morning and Days are my absolute favourites. He was also the lead MC in the band TZU (pronounced tee-zed-you) and they made four albums which contain additional gems - Mondays and Coming Round are top tier. I've been following his work since the early 2000's (when Aussie hip-hop began, really) and it's so interesting tracing the development of his (and TZU's) music. It started very light and upbeat and grew steadily dourer and even a touch bleak by their final album. It says a lot for the times, and what growing up in this country is like, honestly. Very relatable.

Urthboy - another Aussie hip-hop artist with all the hallmarks of our brand of hip-hop. He is often upbeat - like Knee Length Socks, Shruggin' and Long Loud Hours are all great stories and/or cheerful beats - but he sometimes writes these stunningly intimate tracks - Daughter of the Light, which is an homage to his mum, or Natural Progression are good examples. He was (is?) also in the band The Herd. They are more politically focussed - the most famous song being 77% - a song that absolutely sizzles with anti-racist anger.

The Black Keys (of course) - I'd been aware of their existence for years and years (Gold on the Ceiling and Lonely Boy were everywhere at one point) but I had never been into it. Which retrospectively, is weird because I always like blues music, though I always skirted around the edges of it. What really grabbed me in the end was Howlin' for You, which began haunting me during last year. I'd wake up in the morning with that song in my head. So, I went digging for more, and an obsession was born. Personal faves include Crawling Kingsnake, Sinister Kid and Tighten Up - but there are so many great songs to choose from.

Editors - They are industrial rock (I think it's called) out of England, These guys are possibly my favourites of all time. Their music talks a lot about love and death in really interesting ways - it's a mix of rock, melancholy acoustic tunes and electro. Their album An End Has a Start is where I began, but The Back Room and The Weight of Your Love are brilliant albums. I'd single out All Sparks, Formaldehyde, and The Phone Book as their best, but it was a hard choice.

Kings of Leon - I was totally obsessed with their music around 2010 and I still passionately love several of their songs. Arizona, Knocked Up, King of the Rodeo, Waste a Moment, and Find Me are always going to be on a list of favourite tracks.

Talking Heads - I grew up in a musical household, in the sense that there was always music playing, mostly my dad's music. He was a young dad - 21 when I was born - so he was still very into popular music at the time (though definitely not R&B which was just starting to reach us in the late eighties. I often wonder what he would've made of Aussie hip-hop if he'd lived to hear it... anyway.) Talking Heads were big in my childhood, and I still really love their music - new wave is so fun and at times silly, I'm totally into it. Songs like Love for Sale, Psycho Killer, The Lady Don't Mind, And She Was and Girlfriend is Better are such cornerstones of my musical taste, I can hardly imagine who I'd be without them.

Dire Straits -Sultans of Swing is a forever favourite. It's one of those songs that reminds me really strongly of my dad. He had this silly way of singing the line 'it ain't what they call rock'n'roll.' I also really love Brothers in Arms and Romeo and Juliet.

Pink Floyd - the song Wish You Were Here absolutely defined a time in my life and sums up something about myself for which there are no words. The whole album (of the same name) is such a journey - even though I've always found Shine on you Crazy Diamond incredibly creepy. I also appreciate the album The Wall as a musical journey. Comfortably Numb, One of my Turns and the various iterations of Another Brick in the Wall are so, so good. Part 1 speaks to me on a cellular level.

Danheim - The soundtrack to my writing activities for years and years now, I couldn't make a list without mentioning him. I don't know the names of the tracks because I listen to whole albums at a time. They're all good. For some reason though, the song Glitnir is known to me as a particular favourite.

Heilung for the same reason as Danheim - though with Heilung, I've watched the full LIFA show like a thousand times; and I passionately love the song Norupo.

to be clear i am not at all serious about this, but i went into a deep dive into the playlists (inconclusive but i had fun so-) and this is what i have done. the numbers are the song number in their playlists. 

I also have no idea if this has been done or not. Like the playlists are from 2017 so I’m assuming so? but idk. anyways this was fun, thought i’d share. I bolded my favourite ones (also the most cohesive ones)

Now on the 3rd listen of Ramblin' On and I'm a lot more awake now.

Track 1 - Right Kind of Trouble. I do like the build at the end of Right Kind of Trouble. That is really fun.

Track 2 - Forever Ain't Long. oooooh I love the lyric 'Take me forever. Forever Ain't long" that's poetry.

Track 3 - Every Light. Such a great rhythm. Its a good road trip song with the way it rolls. Even the lyrics back it up as a road trip song. The dual images of being on the road, but not wanting to leave.

Track 4 - Ain't No Tellin'. Jensen's voice in this is amazing. And the bordering on soul sections with the choir in the back, fantastic.

Track 5 - You Made Me Blue. Such old school country. A perfect song to do the Texas Two-Step to. Lyrics-wise it has one of my favourite country music tropes, the I'm over you - good riddance song.

Track 6 - Keep on Ramblin'. How much Sturgill Simpson has Jensen been listening to? His vocal inflections are almost identical in this. Another great road trip song. The wandering cowboy kinda deal. And the guitar solo is very Willie Nelson/Django Reinhardt, Trigger would sound amazing playing it.

Track 7 - Sweet Escape. This is fun and considering the darker imagery in the lyrics with howlin at the moon, blocking out the negative voices etc its a lot more upbeat and cheery than you'd expect. Steve's voice is great and the fiddle has a sweet sound.

Track 8 - Return to Me. There is something warm about the sound in this song. The kind of track you can imagine sitting in front of a fire while listening to it, which considering the sad lyrics is an acomplishment. It feels like it finishes too suddenly though as if there should be another verse or a bridge.

Track 9 - Restless Man. Well this feels autobiographical Jensen. Considering the jetting around to different jobs he's been doing in the past couple of years and him talking about that keeping him happy, this feels more personal than the other two "being on the road" songs on the album.

Track 10 - Velvet Sky. Oh the fiddle at the start of this. Its so reminiscent of Jay Ungar and his traditional mountain music. This is probably the strongest final track of all the albums.

Over all, its a different feel from the first 2 albums since its a hell of a lot more country, but similar enough that it will weave together well if you play them shuffled. It just feels like a progression of their sound rather than a whole new beast

I think Every Light is starting to stand out at the best song on the album. Keep on Ramblin' would make an excellent single.

Wip Folder Tag Game Thingy

Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! And then tag as many people as you have wips. I’m also counting art wips or whatever else you have, anything goes basically!!

Ok, I’ve been on vacation, so super late to the party. However, I’m eternally grateful to @aristocratic-otter, @letraspal , @palimpsessed , @creepyspice and @messofthejess  I admire y’all so much and am super honored that y’all thought of me. TBH I’ve been super blocked and kinda figured I’m done with fic writing but an idea hit me the other day + I have a few old WIPs so here’s what I could dig up. Also I don’t have an actual WIP folder, just a writing folder so. And thinking about it, this is kind of a list of shame because I’m not sure I’ll ever finish any of these :/ 

1. (Ficlet) (this is pretty much just some notes I wrote in my phone one night on vacation while I was falling asleep.) it has no title, it’s just an extension of the scene in AWTWB, chapter 52 where Simon runs away into the forest after telling Baz he can do anything to him & whatnot. It’s really nothing but a couple lines of dialogue. 

2. Howlin Forever Epilogue- yikes, a whopping 114 words. Maybe more in my phone???

3. Monopoly Fic Collab- I am the collab killer. The only reason I’m telling you this is that I had too many free drinks on my flight back from Florida. If I’m involved with a collab it will never see the light of day, but apparently I’ve got some paragraphs of one about the gang playing Monopoly (that was part of a long-dead collab that just didn’t make it.) 

4. The One With the Zombies- I started a zombie AU. I have zero recollection of any sort of plot so it sorta just fizzled out.

5. The Boy Next Door. Yikes, started that one for an exchange in 2020, started chapter 4, it’s supposed to be a subversion of the RomCom trope, but I totally ran out of plot so kinda just stopped.
