Something that bothers me about the backstory of Tears of the Kingdom is that the fall of Zonai civilization is never explained. Even before the war with the Demon King, the Zonai already seemed to be in severe decline. During his formal surrender, Ganondorf taunts Rauru by claiming that he and his sister Mineru are the only two remaining Zonai, and there seems to be no evidence to the contrary.
As Rauru guides Link through the Gardens of Time, he explains that the Zonai used their technology to build a civilization that "flourished for many, many years," presumably before the founding of Hyrule. In Breath of the Wild, ancient technology was somewhat sinister, as demonstrated by the disasters precipitated by the malfunctions of the Divine Beasts. Was the decline of the Zonai also connected to their technology, somehow?
I'm intrigued by the implications of Rauru's meditations on the Temple of Time, which he claims was originally on the surface. I wonder how the islands floating over Hyrule came to exist, and whether their creation was perhaps an unintended consequence of Zonai technology. This is just a theory, but such disruptions to the natural environment might be a result of the use of the secret stones in particular, which might explain why Hyrule Castle suddenly rose into the sky as soon as the seal on the stones it was built to protect was broken.

Fighting Fate: Chapter 1
Zelgan Fic For the wonderful and inspiring @s-kinnaly
(Let me know if you guys want me to continue.)
Zelda’s nerves were almost completely shot at this point in the meeting of the Gerudo King. The kings eyes were fixed on the Zonai King but every few moments she would catch them on her instead clearly he was not at all interested in the words of the king. It was only when Rauru motioned for him to rise from his kneeling position did his attention return.
“There is one other matter I have been told by our dear relative Zelda that you two wished to confer with in private, if you are still willing Lord Ganondorf.”
Rauru said however not before looking to her for confirmation for her approval. Zelda simply smiled and nodded to him as she walked down the small stairs to stand in front of him. Standing so close to him she was able to get a much better look at him.
A blind person could see how strong and built he was. But what truly caught her attention was his eyes. They didn’t show hatred toward her or even any malice from his incarnation of Demise. All she saw were the tired eyes of a man who clearly wanted change.
She could feel her whole body shake ever so slightly as she tried to remain calm. She watched as Ganondorf turned to his troops motioning for them to await for him outside. Zelda in turn watched as Rauru and Sonia left while the guards followed behind leaving through the main door.
Silence....complete and utter silence fell upon the room as they both stood in front of the other. But it was she who spoke first.
“King Ganondorf of the Gerudo. I see it in your eyes that you can sense in me what I can sense in you.”
Ganondorf eyes slightly became wider as he could feel a echo of the powerful aura in her. The stone she wore glowing a faint gold. He could sense the goddesses light in this small Hylian. And for a moment his mind wondered as to how someone so small could hold so much power. In turn she could sense malice in his body but it had clearly had not been fully awaken...at least not yet.
“Yes, Lady Zelda... I can sense the light of the goddess Hylia in you just as you can  the malice of Demise will always torment me...”
He kneeled in front of her to meet her at eye level as he place the blade beside him away from her.
“A fate and a curse that I wish to change...”
His voice was low but his words were as warm as the Gerudo desert. She could sense in him...at least for now...that he was not lying.
“However...” he said and almost instantly did his words turn cold as he looked around the castle.
“These walls have many eyes and ears. I would prefer we speak on the matter in a more trusting place.”
He was silent for a moment and in a quick fluid motion he simply grabbed his blade and turned away from her walking toward the gates of the castle but stopped short as he looked over his shoulder to her.
“Come to my kingdom in one weeks time. There we shall speak of your offer, that is my term. Agreed?”
Zelda merely bowed her head knowing all too well that this man was both cautious and ambitious. A combination that she knew could be dangerous. But she knew this was for the best for not only their people of this time period but the future as well, after all it was her duty.
“As a sign of good faith I will lower my forces on our borders. I will await for your arrival. Lady Zelda”
-
“Are you sure you wish to go through with this Zelda? I understand our fates are etched in stone in the future. There is no guarantee that even if he accepts your proposal, that he will keep his word.” Mineru said crossing her arms with a concerned look on her face.
“I know you’re worried for me. But with there being no other way to return to my time. I must find a way to keep peace between our lands for as long as I can.” she said touching the stone on her necklace.
“There is truly nothing we can say to change her mind dear Mineru. I believe in her and if this is truly how we gain peace...then we must stay hopeful.” Queen Sonia said as she walked up to Zelda taking a hold of her hand giving a silent prayer.
Zelda smiled to both of them as Rauru stood behind them. Both of them understanding the other even without words. Zelda stepped back from them as she saddled her horse, a fair and giant steed that had been gifted to her.
“I promise...” was all she said as she rode off with a small group of Hylian soldiers to protect her by Rauru’s orders
-
Seven days and nights pasted when they had arrived at the border of the Gerudo kingdom. Zelda could see along the border were many female warriors but far less than what expected. Between the mountains and up ahead of the path was a small troupe of Vai warriors blocking the path beside what looked to be a scouting tower. Zelda stopped her horse as the leader walked ahead striking the ground with her spear.
“Sav’aqq. Lady Zelda, we of the Gerudo have come to escort you to our King. However your voe warriors will not be permitted in the city. Is this acceptable?”
Zelda nodded and saw the troops turn around as they walked down the path leading to a small stable with a few sand seals awaiting for their riders. She dismounted as only the few female hyrulian that had accompanied her did the same. The Gerudo women called for their sand seals and motioned for the others to get on. Zelda wrapped her arms around rider as the sand seals sped forth quicker than she had ever known they could.
It was only a matter of a few moments when they arrived at the gate to the city. A few eyes glared in caution as few children hid behind walls as their mothers stood in front of them with a hand on their weapons.
“I didn’t expect such fear toward us...though I suppose I should have been aware that we would not be as welcome than the others have been.”
“What would you expect, Lady Zelda. Years of distrust will do that to anyone. Vai or voe.” The commander from before said as she walked them closer and closer to the home of their ruler.
Up ahead of her was the castle for the great Gerudo King. It was much bigger than from her time, multiple fabric were wrapped around the top of it connecting to the taller buildings with a large archway at the front adorned in gold and carvings of their history. There she saw him standing at the top of the stairs there in the blazing sun and being honest to herself, she could confirm with herself in that moment that he was truly a handsome man.
The last time she saw him he was nothing but a rotten corpse but now, it was like the moon from the sun. His long red hair blew in the desert air as the clothes he wore clung to his well toned and shaped form. A chiseled body only adorned more by the gold he wore as he looked down at her. While he wore no expression he had to admit he was surprised that she had come all this way.
She let her guards wait outside as she walked up the stairs to watch as he kneeled before her once more this time with no blade in hand and instead offering his hand to hers which she took as the eyes of every Gerudo laid on her and he spoke.
“Welcome to my Kingdom.”
“I am honored to be here. King Ganondorf.”
He smiled to her almost mischievously, clearly he enjoyed it when she called him king. He released her hand as he turned around to the large throne in the center of the room. He waved a hand at his guards.
“Leave us.”
They bowed their hands before leaving the royal chambers as Zelda stood before him he got a much better look at her. She did have some similarities to Queen Sonia, strange though how he had never heard of her before.
“So what is it that you would ask of me, Zelda.”
“I have a proposition that may benefit both of us. I propose a political marriage between us. To ensure that no harm be done or come from each of our kingdoms.”
A large smirk ran across his face for a moment as he leaned in a tad bit closer in his throne to look at her directly.
“Do not toy with me dear Zelda...I know that the Zonai have no love toward me or my people. Marrying you would be not different than swearing my services to them. My people deserve to be equals not servants.”
“Then allow me to stay with you here in your kingdom. In the realm of the Gerudo instead of Hyrule. And I swear that I will make Rauru allow you to rule as a King of the Gerudo not a lord. Your people and ours will have no more ill will toward the other if they see us married.”
He said nothing as he looked her up and down for a quick moment. She was not unattractive. But there was one matter that crossed his mind.
“Are you even of age to ask such a thing. I may not be the best ruler but I will not share a bed with a child.”
Zelda’s face went red for a moment but not at the thought of what he suggested but forgetting that she was technically older than she looked but he was even older in those terms. She gathered herself as she looked at him.
“Yes I am...and the offer still stands. Even if you think low of my kind. I want what is best for both our peoples. There will be no need for war. Your people will live not just survive.”
Ganondorf chuckled to himself.
“Your kind? You think I hate all Hylians? Tell me my lady, did you ever wonder why my annoyance is focused more toward Rauru than anyone?”
“Surely because of his want for you to swear fealty to him?”
“Well...I must admit that was some of it. But that was not it entirely. You see dear Zelda...Queen Sonia before caught my eye. For more reasons than one...”
Zelda was slightly taken back. Did the man she know as the Demon King have feelings toward Queen Sonia before she had been wed.
“But now...I will be even more honest toward you dearest Zelda...you have peaked my interest in this union.” He said sitting up from the throne adjusting his hair to it laid over his shoulder.
“I would hope it to be a marriage not completely void of affections.” He said with a smile on his face as he watched her cross her arms.
“That depends on two important factors for this union to work.”
“Oh? and what would that be?”
“First, You respect me as a partner and a woman and treat me no lesser than if I was one of your own, in return I do the same. I will not treat you as a possible threat but instead as a man and a partner.”
‘and secondly?”
“We cause no harm to the other, only then can we have complete faith in one another.”
“Hmph...So be it.”
He lowed his head down to her and smiled this time seeing her for the Hylian woman she was. The dress she wore clung to her form beautifully the pure white color only adding to it as the accessories she wore shined a bit in the sunlight making her look more radiant than the days before. Her green eyes shining more vibrantly as she looked up at him without any fear in them.
She was different from the other hylians. She was intimidated by him but there was no fear. In truth his interest was now peaked and so was hers. Could she change the future doing this? or would it be all for not. It didn't matter to her, if there was a chance to change their fates she would take. No matter what.

I was at first in love with totk, and I still think mechanical wise, its quite impressive
And when I collected all the tears and saw the "story" I genuinely got upset in a good way (at first), because man! Did they really got the balls to go that far? Is there nothing I can do for her? Now I MUST do all the temples, see how it plays out and --oh, I've got this cutscene already. Why are all the people so dumb about Zelda, I KNOW where she is, Link say something-- Link??
After finishing all the temples and almost falling asleep, I stopped playing the game, looked up the last boss and remaining cutscenes and went "Thats it?"
Watching other people (including you) being critically about so many things, both character and mechanical wise, I've almost startled myself with a realization what the gnawing feeling I constantly had, actually was.
Totk feels like a fanfic.
And don't get me wrong, I love fanfiction, I think its great and important, I adore fanfic writers, I love finding gems, I love reading self indulgent stories, see new spins and interpretation of characters. I love the casual, the passion, the creativity!
But totk gives me the same feeling everytime I am reminded that Fifty Shades is a Twillight fanfic.
The world is there. The faces I know and grew to love are there. But everything is ever so slightly different, uncannily so. Just how some characters talk, how they act, how they were placed in the story. The Zonai appearing out of nowhere, but no, they always had been there you see, they were these super magical advanced people but they all died, the king is so tragic. And you see, the king is super cool and powerful and-- oh I dont get to interact with him outside of the tutorial. Did they try to do another King Rhoam-- but wait, that only worked because we didn't knew he was a ghost-- totk wait stop why do you take him out of the story, why couldn't he be a companion, he IS ABLE TO TALK THROUGH THE ARM LET THE OLD GOAT COMMENT ON STUFF?? If you bring up all this ancient stuff and you still got a ghost lingering, let him talk?? (I never ended up getting Mineru but I smell wasted potential as well)
Im not even mad, I am disappointed. It feels like the devs saw what all the lore hunters got attached to and talked about and then just... took the "cool". All the Zonai stuff could've easily been Sheikah tech, but got just reskinned to look more exciting instead of being its own thing.
Like... at this point I prefer what fans are doing over what Totk gave us. The characterization of Rauru (and everything Zonai), projects like you do of what totk couldve been, the little nuggets of actual highlights and details of love fans find in the game. I found much more enjoyment in these concepts than I got from a 70bucks game. And thats depressing.
I love fanfiction. I dont love it when my corporate 70 dollar, six year development, console exclusive game feels like a story that passionate fan couldve written miles better in a week (and I've already seen much cooler and interesting rewrites and ideas).
Zelda has been a huge part of my childhood and its depressing seeing it treated like that. It always was about the story, the epic, its The Legend of Zelda for crying out loud. To be courageous to enter a dungeon, to be wise and solve all the riddles. To become powerful over the journey you embarked on. Zelda to me is the campfire story you tell to others and go into the woods or the beach and imagine what monsters you would slay. Zelda is not the sandcastle you build in the sandbox and then add dinosaurs and star wars ships because you didn't had any other toys, and just stumble into and over some story to entertain yourself until lunch is ready.
I'd have an oracle of seasons over another totk any day at this point. They should've just make the mechanics of totk its own thing, but I guess they were scared it wouldn't sell if it doesn't have a Mario or Zelda skin straped over it.
Anyways, sorry for the mini rant - love your art, love your thoughts and insights, and I am looking forward to see more of it - Zelda related or not (your original characters look amazing, I adore your style sm)
Hope you have a great rest of the day!
*nods along through this entire rant*
idk how many of my rants you have read but yeah ... yeah ... and the further you think about it the further it all falls apart, the wasted potential of it all and the goddamn audacity of them to do those interviews in which they make it EVEN WORSE is just
i know the expectation for a direct sequel to botw was huge and understandbly so but i really REALLY think it would not have been that hard to make it a good follow up even taking into account that totk was originally a DLC, pretty much all of botws aspects could have been developed further, i dont know what could have happened to make totk have turned out like this .. literally it feels like something had to have gone wrong, its like someone who doesnt know zelda nor botw at all was given a few prompts and then just made some generic fantasy story while the rest worked on ultrahand for 5 years
the technical impressive things ARE technical impressive, but i dont think it was necessary nor served the game well in any way (and i LOVE building games- however totk is neither a building game nor a story game nor a zelda game nor an exploration game nor a sequel imo) but zelda, this zelda, is not made for that and i cant help but think it was mainly to encourage people to make some ridiculous mechs so it can go viral on tiktok (not trying to discredit them, it IS cool what they are doing but i .... have my doubts if zelda is the right place for that)
ill stop there bc i have ranted so much about everything i dont wanna repeat it here again; it just doesnt feel like a real game (derogatory), it feels extra bad bc i was not really into zelda when botw came out and while i did get it as soon as i could (months after release since i just started a minijob and didnt have the money) i only over time grew to love zelda this much again, devouring any theories and anything about it bc i loved it so much- i was never into it like this when a new title was announced and dont own any special editions so i bought the totk collectors bc i was just so damn excited for it after the 2019 trailer dropped (god i want that time back ... it looked so much more like it was going to be an actual sequel) even if i was already worried it wouldnt be good at that point given how much i started to sense stuff i dont like about the newer trailers
i recently sold it at our local gameshop bc it was like a thorn in my side given how expensive it was and how dissapointed i was in the game, i genuinely think that, technical impressiveness aside, totk is the onyl zelda i truly cannot stand (for alot of reasons) and im genuinely worried for the future of the franchise
i bought an Oki (Okami) figurine for what i got back and i feel much happier with that :3
(also on a note, i did finish the game two weeks after release but stopped playing it right then and hadnt touched it since, i also streamed all of what i played and its still up if you want to see my slow descend into madness fjkdhkdhjk though its been a long while since then and i by far did not talk about everything back then, just what my most immediate frustrations were while still playing)
(also the gameplay isnt as good as people make it out to be, so much is so frustrating and punishing to use i am kinda baffled it got through like that and most people call that its best aspect ..... though i guess if the rest is so much worse even mid gameplay can seem good ooooooooh how dare i)
also thank you for liking what i do!!! <3 it means alot to know it is appreciated by someone :D

THE RE-WRITTEN TIMELINE
!!!WARNING!!!
Spoilers for Tears of the Kingdom ahead. Shut your eyes and scroll for a sec if you don't want to see.
No seriously I'm going all in.
Alright now that those nerds are gone, lets talk about how my suspicions that all past games are no longer canon turned out to be 100% correct. Also grab some coco, we're gonna be here for a minute.
At the beginning of Tears of the Kingdom, Link and Zelda are separated, with Zelda being transported into the distant past thanks to her latent time magic going nuts when exposed to a sage stone (NOTE:
Tumblr media
Sage stones greatly amplify the holder's powers and while Zelda possessed both light AND time magic due to her ancestry, it seems her time magic was stronger and so was what the stone amplified)
Zelda finds herself in the era of Hyrule's founding and meets the first king and queen of Hyrule, her ancestors, King Rauru (A Zonai possessing light magic) and Queen Sonia (A Hylian possessing time magic). Both are not only the King and Queen, but are the sage of light and time respectively. It is made very clear that these two are the first king and queen of Hyrule. None came before them. All came after them.
Tumblr media
Now, I hear you saying "This doesn't make all the old games non-canon!" Yeahyeah, shush, keep reading. The adversary the first king and queen face in Hyrule's first era is none other than Ganondorf, the demon king of the Gerudo tribe
Tumblr media
Before, Ganondorf first appeared in OoT's era (which was not, nor was it ever stated to be Hyrule's founding era), but now here he is, right at the beginning of it all with the first king and queen. In fact we even get a sort of recreation/Overwrite of a certain OoT scene
Tumblr media
A moment in both games in which Ganondorf is swearing fealty to the King of Hyrule. Of course, in OoT, Rauru isn't the current king, but an ancient sage dwelling in the light temple And also a Hylian. And also an Owl... This has been re-written, he';s a Zonai and the first king now, and also not an Owl.
Ganondorf ultimately betrays the king, echoing his actions in OoT, but in this timeline, there's no little princess Zelda, there's no Sheikah, there's no little forest boy. Nobody to meddle in Ganondorf's plans. He murders Queen Sonia and steals her stone, taking it for himself and amplifying his powers to insane degrees, and truly becoming The Demon King.
Tumblr media
Rauru rallies the leaders of the regions of Hyrule, A Gerudo woman, A Zora woman, a Goron, and a Rito man, as well as his older Sister Mineru. Aside from Mineru, all the others remain nameless, but all wear helmets/masks that are reminiscent of the divine beasts that would be created thousands of years in their own futures and be named after them.
Tumblr media
Thats right. I strongly believe these four to be Nabooru, Ruto, Darunia, and I guess "Medo"(?). Rauru gives them all sacred stones, naming them sages. Nabooru becoming the sage of lightning, "Medo" becoming the sage of wind, Ruto the sage of water, and Darunia the sage of fire. Mineru is already the sage of Spirit, Zelda, having a sacred stone, is named the sage of time, and Rauru, also possessing one, is the sage of light.
Together, with their own powers jacked up, they confront the demon king and his army of monsters. And lose. In a last act of desperation, King Rauru; the sage of light, uses his light powers, apparently fueled by his own life, to seal Ganondorf and drain away his magic.
Ganondorf knows this seal won't hold forever and taunts Rauru that this is ultimately a futile act, But Rauru, having knowledge of the future thanks to a time traveling Zelda, tells him that by that time, someone wielding a magic sword that destroys evil will appear to oppose him, and that person's name is JACK- I mean LINK. Ganondorf, fascinated by this prospect, says he looks forward to this, and then succumbs to Rauru's sealing magic. And there the two of them stay for thousands upon thousands of years.
Tumblr media
This conflict between the seven sages and the Demon King Ganondorf became legend, and is known in present day Hyrule as... The Imprisoning war
Now according to all official Zelda media released before this point, the Imprisoning war happened before A Link to the Past/Twilight Princess/Wind Waker, and was the name for the events that took place in OoT. OoT and the events shown in Tears of The Kingdom cannot exist side-by-side. TotK overwrites the ancient legend that is OoT.
BUT WE'RE NOT DONE YET
OH NO
Tumblr media
See. Ganondorf stays sealed there until present day. He doesn't break his seal and get into mischief. He doesn't kidnap girls on the high seas or puppet an idiot wannabe king. He stays sealed in that spot for thousands upon thousands of years. The event of 10,000 bbw (Before Breath of the Wild) take place while he's still sealed away. "Calamity ganon", while born of Ganondorf, is a different entity just sort of spawned from him. I have my suspicions now that Calamity Ganon is actually Ganondorf's magic that was drained away by Rauru, having coalesced and taken on a sort of conscious form. But then, how did the people of the ancient past know that "ganon" would return? How did they know they needed a hero with a magic sword? How did they know to build divine beasts to help fight this monstrously powerful foe?
Because Zelda, from present day, kept saying in the founding era "Yo this guy is gonna come back in the future and a dude named link with a cool sword is gonna fight him so be ready to throw down" She told this to each individual sage, and in turn, each sage made sure that when that time came, their people, the Gerudo, the Zora, the Rito, and the Gorons, would be there to help the hero. So for generations, they waited. They planned. And then one day, "Calamity ganon" appeared. It was defeated and sealed away by the princess of that era, a nameless hero, and big ol' mechs. And then it appeared again for the last time, because that time it was destroyed 100 years later. Then 5-8 years later Ganondorf woke up, Zelda went back in time and- Oh look a time loop
Tumblr media
Suddenly the logo makes a lot of sense
BUT THAT REMAINS TO BE ALL, MY FRIENDS
The tapestry shown in Breath of the Wild depicting a nameless ancient hero wielding the master sword, standing against Calamity Ganon along with the guardians and divine beasts? Remember that?
We always thought he looked very odd. Very "not-Link" like. And thats because he didn't. Your reward for finishing all 152 shrines in Tears of the kingdom is an unusual single piece of armor called "Ancient Hero's Aspect"
Tumblr media
These three pieces represent the Owl, the dragon, and the boar. In Zonai tradition, the Owl represented Wisdom, the Dragon; Courage, and the Boar; Power. This item's description reads as follows: "This item is said to contain the spirit of a hero who once saved Hyrule. That hero's aura will envelop the wearer" So what happens when you put this armor on?
Tumblr media
Link takes on the form of that ancient hero. An individual who appears to be half Zonai (Full blood Zonai have much longer ears). Who has a snout, and long flowing red hair. And once, long ago, he wielded the master sword in opposition to Calamity Ganon.
Tumblr media
Too long; didn't read? The events of Tears of the Kingdom directly and brutally contradict the entirety of the Legend of Zelda franchise and now only Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom should be considered canon

FAQ
*this post continues heavy totk spoilers
How did it start?
A lot of people started posting some really cool art of a TotK ending where Zelda returns as a hybrid dragon creature thing. I saw a few that called it a “bad” ending and I noticed she was often portrayed with dominantly human-features just like, with horns or a tail, or the purple eyes, etc. I love to play video games(clearly) and I enjoy the challenge of seeing various endings, not just “secret endings” (think Heavy Rain, Until Dawn, The Witcher 3, Drakengard- anyone else play this?) I got to thinking about how her coming back didn’t really like a true “bad ending”. To me, a bad ending, really, would be one in which she didn’t get to magically, miraculously come back in any form. A bad ending to me would be Mineru’s warning held true. And in doing so, it would become The Legend of Zelda because she becomes the stuff of myths. Of true Legend. Fulfilling destiny (botw-era and the series as a whole). My brain sort of took off from there regarding the implications this would have on Hyrule and specially, our boy Link.
How could you! A Bad ending? Is this story at least hurt and eventual comfort??? Does it have a happy ending??
I could tag this hurt and comfort, but usually people who read these types of stories have certain expectations of what “comfort” is (and that’s okay!). Same with a “happy” ending. I don’t need stories to be wrap up in a bow with warmth to enjoy them. Honestly, some of the stories that have touched me the most over the years have had “sad” endings/negative character arcs/tragedy. That being said, I don’t particularly enjoy pure whump, either. What I feel is most important and what I am to do with this story, is to make any suffering meaningful. With purpose. And hopefully- maybe- you’ll see the “comfort” that is possible even in these types of stories.
Wait! So Zelda remains a dragon?
Yes. They defeat the demon dragon. Rauru and Sonia appear in a silent thanks, then they disappear and Link falls from the sky alone into the water. The Light Dragon continues along in her flight above him.
Link is also the only one who can see/has ever seen the Light Dragon.
Are there any other major changes from TotK?
It follows the game pretty closely. It’s just hard to say exactly what is in this story from TotK because there is just so much. In BotW, I headcanon Link took his time. He doesn’t remember anything. He is alone, lost, and the world is a vast, broken place. Therefore, it is plausible/ realistic in my head for all the side questions to be done prior to the ending being reached. In TotK, especially with the headcanon he and Zelda were together in the time between BotW and TotK, I had a hard time imagining Link would waste much time on anything unnecessary to save Zelda. So, with this in mind, I’ve had to justify the side questions to include in the story. Link’s journey is a bit different than my own. Whereas I actually spent 80% of my playthrough exploring the depths, this Link only went down when necessary. Meaning many of the lightroots have not been unlocked and he only has part of the armor of the depths. In the Linktober and the early concept, he has the entire set but this has been changed for the main comic.
How far after the events of TotK does this take place?
Five years.
Is it completely planned out?
Yes. I have a complete rough story outline done. It’s 17 chapters. I am anticipating some editing as I go, but regardless, it’s a big project. A huge shout out to @zeldaelmo and @fioreofthemarch for helping me get the story set. They are both phenomenal writers for the LoZ fandom so be sure to check them out!
What happened to the comic?
I made the decision to tell this story (initially) in writing. I have a very specific style in mind for this story as a full comic and honestly, I just don't feel like my artistic ability and overall proficiency is where I want it to be at this time. I'm still learning! I will be continuing to post art, concept art, and some comic panels here as I go and eventually, I would love to adapt the story into a full comic, but for now, I'll be telling the main story in writing.
How long have you been drawing?
I’ve been drawing all my life. Just for fun, although I took a few classes in school. Digitally, self-taught, since fall 2022. Still very new to this with lots to learn! I have a minor in creative writing and feel much more confident and comfortable with that.
Feel free to send me a DM with questions anytime! I plan to update this periodically.

I heard this theory that the Spirit Dragons Dinraal, Farosh, and Neydra were once Zonai in the past. This theory is strengthened by the introduction to the forbidden art of draconification as well as the dragons sharing similar facial features to that of Rauru and Mineru (the last of the Zonai by the time of Ganondorf). I thought I'd share my take on origins of the 3 original dragons and why they became the way they are.
Tumblr media
("The Undragoned Dragons" by kamabokobun)
Long ago, well before Rauru and Sonia, when the Zonai empire was at its peak. The Springs of Power, Wisdom, and Courage were tended to not by dragons, but by Zonai priests or shrine maidens. Each priest was trained from a young age to eventually take up the position of the new priest. This sacred duty was passed down from generation to generation until it eventually reached Neydra, Farosh, and Dinraal. I'm not sure whether it was through prophecy, observation, or even a mix of both, but the priests had come to a startling realization... The Zonai Empire was doomed.
This likely led to a secret meeting with the priests as to what was to be done as, without a future heir, the Sacred Springs would fall into ruin and fade away. Eventually, they came to the conclusion that in order guarantee the shrines' permanent protection, the priests had only one choice... draconification. Likely they knew what this act would cost them as well as it being explicitly forbidden, they decided to keep it a secret to prevent others from stopping them. When the time finally came, Dinraal, Farosh, and Neydra swallowed each of their secret stones, and with that the priests were no more, and the dragons were born.
Over the course of centuries, the Zonai empire would eventually fall into ruin, and any memory of the Spirit Dragons ever being Zonai would be lost to time. Yet still they remain, diligently guarding the Springs of Wisdom, Power, and Courage as they had always done, hidden away from all save magic or the innocent. The story of TOTK is surrounded by triumph and tragedy, community, responsibility, as well as sacrificing for one's self either for others or for your own gain. But the story of the dragons will always stand as one of the biggest tragedies of all, three people who gave everything they had so that the task they'd sworn their lives to would not be in vain. A task they still perform even after the Zonai empire has long since been buried and forgotten in the sands of time.
I like this theory and the plot for the 3 dragons. When Mineru tells Zelda about the secret stone and what happens by swallow it, I immediately thought that at that point dragons were people in the past.
What makes me think most is how the Zonai knew that by swallowing the secret stone one could live forever in a dragon form, I mean, how did they come to this conclusion? Someone had done this well before the 3 dragons came? And how did Ganondorf know if Rauru had already imprisoned him when Zelda did the deed?
In Totk there are too many uncovered points from the plot side and that's what I don't like, adding a new population without dealing with their history really leaves a lot of unknowns. I think spending some time on their story in the game would have been better.
I like this theory, I personally think that 3 zonai who spontaneously decide to transform into dragons for the greater good seems really true to me!
Thanks for sharing your story! 💖

Totk Ficlet: Pity
(An alternate take on a scene in Tears of the kingdom. Spoiler warning)
The Demon king felt himself drop to one knee. His eyes burning with rage at the man in front of him. The young blond hylian with eyes looking right at him. The other sages had finished the last of the phantoms and were gasping for breath. They were tired, as was the demon king. The only one still seemingly with energy was the wielder of the sword that seals the darkness
He was so sure that this swordsman was not a threat to him, he was so sure the time to conquer hyrule was now, yet somehow, this hero and his group of new sages were not only matching him, they were winning.
“How? How are you doing this!?” The demon king roared.
The swordsman stood silent, his blade remained drawn and shining brightly.
“I am the Demon King Ganondorf! The one that will throw this world into eternal Darkness. How can you stand against me!? Tell me Link!”
That was the first time during the fight that he called his name without disgust or dismissal. He called out the Hylian’s name with Rage and begrudging respect.
Link’s expression shifted, not showing his intense focus he once had. His expression started to fill with something the demon king could not believe.
“What is with that expression? Where is your focus? your anger!? Your hatred!?”
Link was not one for words. The pressure of being the hero chosen by the master sword left him with little to say. But in this moment, Link was not looking at the Demon king of Hyrule, nor the king of the Gerudo.
“I saw what you’ve done.” Link spoke. His voice steady, the sudden words made the demon king and the other sages take notice.
“For many reasons I should hate you. But, seeing what you once were, what you are now…” Link paused, taking a moment to think of the right words.
The other sages were surprised, Mineru especially couldn’t believe the words. What was the hero feeling?
“So hero, if you don’t hate me. What do you feel?” Ganondorf asked with a mix of amusement and frustration that didn’t seem feasible to feel.
“I think the word is… pity.” Link answered.
The word hung in the air of the dark abyss.
Ganondorf felt as if he had been slashed by the very blade the hero was wielding.
Pity?! He pitied him? The demon king!? The one that made Rauru so desperate that he was sealed away!? The one that killed Queen Sonia? The one that would plunge the world into darkness! The hero has pity on him!?
“You Pity me!? Me! The most powerful being in all of Hyrule! The master of darkness! The demon king that rivals the gods! You pity me!? How can you come up with such a ridiculous notion!?”
“You’re alone.”
The quick response left the area silent, only to be broken up by giggles.
Everyone looked to see the young Rito, Tulin trying to stifle his laugh but failing.
“Sorry, it’s just pretty funny. He can summon monsters but not friends.” Tulin answered.
The comment caused Riju to start chuckling, in agreement with the Rito.
“I refuse to believe a pitiful monster such as this was once a Gerudo.”
Soon Yunobo and Sidon joined in with Hearty laughter.
“He really does seem kind of sad when you think about it. The Demon king that has to make his own servants.” Yunobo pointed out.
“Well said Link. This Demon King fails to understand what it means to be a king.” Sidon exclaimed with a flashy smile.
Mineru, who was dumbfounded by the turn of events ended up letting out a fit of chortles. This was unexpected. Truly Zelda was right when she said her Knight was special. Only Link could lose his arm, and see the horrors of the Demon king and point out the one thing that would strike him so fiercely.
The demon king felt his blood boil at the laughter of the Sages. Did this Swordsman just mock him!?
He wanted to strike him but he felt his body ache. His body was already at its limit. But he did know one thing he could do. He didn’t care if he lost himself in his hatred. There is one thing he would not be. He would not be pitied by a damn sword swinging nobody.
He pulled the sage stone from his forehead. He would end this.

Okay I have two totk timeline theories:
1. It takes place after ocarina of time n thr Downfall timeline when hyrule has been all but lost in the devastation after the hero's death. Sonia is a descendant of OoT Zelda.
This is based on the use of the term Imprisoning War, which so far has used to refer to the war in which ganon was sealed by the sages sometime between Downfall OoT and A link to the Past. Evidence for this includes a whole bunch of OoT symbolism and parallels that I was not expecting but Holy Cow
2. It takes place between Skyward Sword and Minish cap. Sonia is the descendant of Skyward Sword Link and Zelda, and the Kingdom of Hyrule is formed from the peoples of hyrule, inxluding the hylians, who had long settled on the surface but hadnt really formed a government. Of the two, my guess is that this is more likely? Additional evidence/theory? To add to this:
Long ago, at an unspecified point after the Era of Prosperity, in which the Kingdom of Hyrule was established, and during the Force Era, the world was on the verge of being swallowed by shadow, plagued by evil monsters and the atrocities they wrought upon it. As doom seemed near at hand, the Hero of Men stepped forth to combat the evil creatures and save Hyrule from the brink of destruction.[9] It was then that the tiny Minish descended from the skies, bringing the Hero of Men a magical sword called the Picori Blade and a source of great magical power called the Light Force.[10] Using these sacred gifts, the Hero of Men was able to drive back the monsters and magically sealed them all away within the Bound Chest.[11][12] The Light Force was then sealed within the body of Hyrule's princess and was passed down to her successors through the generations.[13] This secret of the Light Force's true fate was only documented in one place: the stained-glass windows of a secret chamber within the Elemental Sanctuary that connects Hyrule to the Minish Realm.
So. This is PRETTY spoilery so proceed carefully: Rauru and his sister, Mineru, are the only ones of the Zonai remaining. What happened to the rest?
I think the became the Minish. Descended from the sky, connected with powers of light, heck, even bearing mysterious magical stones--predecessors of the Kinstones, perhaps?
That's.... pretty much all I have to offer. My only other guess is that the zoni appeared around thr time the timeline reformed, because how else are the Rito and the Zora here?
The timeline is pretty weird and to be honest rather frustrating. I don't think its an attempt to retcon skyward sword, as there are some pretty significant moments directly referring to Skyward Sword later in the game... but the timeline confuses the heck out of me. That's pretty much my only complaint about the game though.

At The Edge of Calamity
Tumblr media
This is one of my contributions to @zelinkcommunity's Zelink Week 2023! Day Five: By A Thread
Look below the break to read! Make sure to read everyone else's masterpieces afterward! Today is an angsty day by nature, be prepared!!!
{ For this week, I will be posting a little peek at art/writing for memories in Call of the Forgotten, a TotK rewrite I am working on (there will obviously be direct and indirect spoilers for TotK). These memories will be posted out of order and are subject to change. They follow the Ancient Hero and Princess during the time of the First Great Calamity. }
Memory ?? – At The Edge of Calamity
( Words – 946 )
Two souls stand at the railing of a skybridge. The new castle's towers stretch to the clouds, comparable to the likes of the spires constructed by the Sheikah. From this height, they can see the field of Hyrule's future capital busy with preparation. The taller of the pair, Princess Zelda, oversees the back and forth motion of guardians. A familiar older woman, Impa, directs a wave of them far below with the motion of a slate in her hands. "By the day, the whole of Hyrule becomes closer to becoming a formidable force. Father's sister… Mineru… She left behind everything we needed to understand the rune and guardian technology we already had. Out of everyone, the Sheikah Tribe is prepared most of all…" Her eyes glimmer with fascination, but the longer she goes on… the further her wonder fades into a forlorn grief. "Yet I… I worry it may not be enough."
The second Hylian, a young man with a sacred sword upon his back, stands a small distance behind her. Her sudden shift nearly startles him, his curious gaze becoming a concerned sort. The boy's hand acts on its own and is drawn toward her, but he is quick to halt it and stay back. There's an uncertainty pulling him away.
"The Sages and my father did all they could to bring the Imprisoning War. They only succeeded with the King's sacrifice… yet even now, his seal is on the verge of cracking. Who is to say what we have will destroy what escapes of the demon?" The princess's calm facade is suddenly torn apart. How often has she wondered such a thing? She feels the light touch of Link's hand over hers on the barrier. It is only then that she realizes just how tightly she gripped the stone, as now her fingers ease into a gentle hold. Her breath ceases for a little too long from his contact, before she finally releases a deep exhale. "...Every night, I hear them. They try to warn me, but I cannot read their lips. No voice travels… yet I know what they tell me. It falls upon what remains in the aftermath of war… to prevent the true destruction of this land; one as young as ourselves compared to the other soldiers. It's…" Zelda's voice quakes in remorse, yet burns with determination. "It's close, Link. The incarnation of hatred surely returns… and it could be any day." Tears collect and roll down her face, but they seem somehow… oversized, like the tears of a dragon coming from human eyes. "Oh, Link… As much as I want to believe that Hyrule can fend for itself… I know how the legends go. The fate of Hyrule will rest with us, when all is said and done. I… deep down, I… I know that is why King Rauru was forced to make the decision he did. So we would be there to finish the Imprisoning War, even after its completion." Fate hangs in the balance. All they can do now is accept it, wait for it to arrive… and hope they hold the power over it.
Her words– this setting in reality– bring Link into a daze. Regardless, he doesn't dare break their touch. No hope truly is what it takes to ease that worry, is it? Zelda has told him stories passed down to her of events they lived through, but were too young to remember. They held Sacred Stones– gifts from the heavens– in their very palms… yet by mortal flaw, they were either consumed by it or were driven to their brink. Yes, they may have guardians… the promise of being "chosen"... and relics of a time that has been forgotten… but that still leaves one major factor: themselves. Will their own flaws push them into the grasp of their enemy? These foreboding glimpses into their potential futures whirl in the young man's head, but he is hardly the definition of vocal. He isn't sure how to spin any of these things into comforting words. He knows Zelda is right.
As close as the two of them are, however… it is only a matter of time until he realizes exactly what he means to say. Without even the slightest hesitation, he allows himself to say it aloud.
"...He's making a mistake in resisting the grave he dug for himself. Whether he comes back as a demon, a dragon, a boar… or whatever! The Demon King will regret taking any form in the era of those he reduced to ruin. Impa has shown me everything you've done to take care of them, even when you were still a child. Despite… everything, Hyrule is getting bigger. I've… never seen a place so… full of life before. I promise you, I do not take up the sword because it was carved that I would. It… hasn't been that way for a long time. No matter what happens in the end, my drive is why I fight. Whether or not we have error, I will fight this battle with you." He places his other hand on Zelda's shoulder, his gaze fierce with assurance. Chosen or not, they will protect them all. Why do anything else? Everything they've ever lived has led to this.
"Link, you…– Time and time again, you have seen how this battle you were… dragged into… goes deeper. You witness Hyrule at what could be the edge of its life! Yet you… stay. You stayed long enough to draw the Sacred Blade, and you stayed long enough to help me awaken the Triforce through blessings of light. …Why?"
"...Do we not share the same wish, princess?"
Thank you for reading! Check out the first concept doodles of them here! Obviously, this is all very incomplete; but most is planned out thoroughly! If you have questions, just ask!

A Retelling of Memory 17 from Tears of the Kingdom
Implied Zelink
Critical plot spoiler warning for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
The gentle breeze brushed my white dress against my legs and rustled the large—though surprisingly light—earrings against my cheek. Both were soft and clean: the opposite of what lay before me. The decayed Master Sword sat on the altar before me, most of its once pristine form broken and lost through the events of that horrific day yet to dawn for millennia.
Regret burned through me two-fold. Knowing what I knew now, I wondered how things would’ve turned out if I hadn’t descended those ancient steps beneath Hyrule Castle with Link in tow. What if I’d learned more before taking the risk. What if I’d learned more before forcing that risk on Link too. I, no—Zelda, daughter of Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule and, more importantly, a scholar—should’ve known better. I blamed myself.
But Link would never see it that way. He was always steadfastly by my side. Even with his knightly oath forgotten through the Shrine of Resurrection, he managed to fulfill his duty to me and the kingdom. But it was more than duty. He believed in me. He would follow me anywhere and do his utmost to ensure my dream of reviving Hyrule came to fruition.
It was that dedication—no, devotion—that had him follow me into that imprisoning chamber. It was months at this point, but I remembered every detail of that fateful day that shaped my destiny in this far-flung age long since gone by. Aeons separated us now, but the danger felt so close at hand, regardless. My eyes turned skyward, and I let them close as the past claimed my thoughts.
“Was that the Sword that Seals the Darkness?” That rasped, cruel, and somehow amused voice rang in my ears as the scene played out before me: the Master Sword reduced to shards at the hands of Ganondorf’s blood-red, fiendish magic. I heard his dried flesh cracking as his desiccated form stood to its full height. “A blade that shatters so easily against my power cannot save you from me.”
Now, it all made sense how he knew us. His name was a mystery to me then, but I could sense Ganondorf’s evil intent when he first came to this youthful Hyrule’s court. I knew there was more to my presence here than just bearing witness to these events. And yet, for a time, that’s all I did. I knew well enough to caution Rauru, but he seemed so certain of the path forward that I didn’t question his decision to accept the Gerudo king’s pledge of fealty.
The second wave of regret wrought its way through me. Sonia, Rauru, and countless more were dead because I didn’t heed my suspicions and force the issue. I had the power to stop a catastrophe, but I’d failed to use it… again.
This Hyrule—ancient to me, but now intimately familiar—was saved, but only just. It would ever balance on the edge of peril unless I could do something about that day coming. This time, I would do something.
My eyes opened and drifted down the remains of the Master Sword. Words and memories flashed before me, clear as day.
I was back in the Korok Forest before the Deku Tree with Link. Its low, rumbling, but assuring words tumbled in my ears as though I were there now. “The sword will continue to gain strength if bathed in sacred power. The stronger that power, the more powerful the sword becomes.”
From there, my mind flung to another memory, a pinch of pain knitting in my brows and chest as I saw Sonia speaking to me again, her hands softly clasped around mine. “After all, you possess more than the power over time. You have a sacred power that can dispel evil.” I nearly wept. She had been so kind. It felt almost motherly. I’d forgotten what that was like.
But purpose drew me away from those feelings. A determination to see my goal through seized me as my mind turned to another memory that had brought me here today. Mineru’s study stood clear before me, and the Zonai herself sat in her chair, her knowledgeable voice speaking unwaveringly. “To swallow a secret stone is to become an immortal dragon… one blessed with eternal life.”
Another pinprick of pain struck me as I recalled something more I had to do before I committed myself to the one solution we had. To the sword’s right sat the Purah Pad and the soft glow of a teal, floating flame. I gently took the device in hand, turned from the altar, and strode to the stone path connecting this cliffside balcony to the Temple of Time. Waiting ever dutifully and ever patiently for me was one of Mineru’s constructs. The flame accompanied me there, taking its place above the device, and I felt my lips tremble. Guilt wracked me. I had no right to ask anything of her, but I had to.
“Mineru, I’m counting on you.”
The flame bobbed in the air for half a moment before it shrank and entered the Purah Pad, briefly illuminating it with the same teal glow before I placed the device gingerly into the hands of the construct. Large, blocky fingers cradled the Purah Pad with the utmost care as it turned and hovered silently toward the Temple of Time.
The rest was up to me.
The fear that gripped me had me retreating into my thoughts. Before I knew it, I stood at the altar once more, halfway surprised I was there as I stared long and hard at the sword upon it.
My mind turned to Link, fighting for us in our future. Wisdom had brought me here. But courage… courage was what I needed. Courage is what he had in abundance. I envied him for it. Though he was often silent, I fondly remembered how he told me I had courage aplenty for holding the Calamity at bay for a century. But now, I felt like I needed even more for what needed to be done. Link readily shared his courage with me before, during, and after the Calamity. But I was alone now. And I knew I would be for a very long time. My courage would have to be enough.
I took a deep breath and began to speak. “Link. I will restore the Master Sword for you.” I paused. I wanted to believe saying it out loud would steady my resolve. Yet, I found myself trembling more. “I will pour my sacred power into it. It will be the weapon that defeats the Demon King.”
I exhaled, forcing my hand to the necklace where my golden secret stone hung gently from my neck. My fingers wrapped around it, and I felt the gentle warmth it offered. It was so small, but I knew the power locked within. I knew its amazing—and horrifying—potential. I drew in a breath and tugged, pulling the stone from the beads that tethered it.
It was only then that I deigned to look on the stone directly. In my cupped hands, its steady glow was calming, but that was its deception. Power threatened to burst from it every moment someone held it. I had to learn to tap into it a drop at a time to bolster my power. Sonia and Rauru, gently and patiently with me, had both nurtured the skill I needed to make use of it. But there would be no restraint here. It was all or nothing with the taboo I intended to commit.
The thought of that power flung me back into my memories of Mineru’s study. The Zonai spoke again, crystal clear. “To become an immortal dragon is to lose oneself.”
Fear gnawed at me, but not as much as my memories did. I saw flashes of Mineru wounded and panting in our desperate battle. I saw Sonia’s face wracked with pain as Ganondorf slew her. I saw Rauru stilled as he sealed the Demon King’s heart, entangled with him until we came to relieve Hyrule’s first king of his terrible duty. I saw Link diving toward me, his corrupted arm reaching for mine, as the imprisoning chamber crumbled around us.
“You must…” I spoke softly to myself. It’s the only way. You must. You must. You must.
The words rung in my head over and over. Each time, I thought of them. Each time, I thought of their sacrifices. I thought of the sacrifices yet to come. And that is where I found my courage.
I closed my eyes, tilted my head back, and brought my cupped hands to my mouth. When my hands came away, they were empty.
I didn’t know what to expect when I let the stone slip past my lips. I didn’t know what I’d taste or how it’d feel slipping past my teeth. Would it burn my tongue? Would it lodge in my throat? Would I die the moment I swallowed?
It did none of those things. It barely registered on my tongue. It had no taste. I barely felt it enter my body. It was as though it wanted to make its passage as easy as possible. There was a moment where I was relieved.
But only a moment.
I was only barely aware of how the sky darkened. I only lightly felt how the wind picked up and blew my dress fiercely against my legs and slapped my earrings against my cheeks. I opened my eyes, but I found them hard to keep open. My vision grew hazy as I found my eyelids fluttering, water massing beneath them. I felt a warmth beginning to blossom within me. It began as that same gentle heat, but it quickly grew discomforting. It felt strange, like it was unfurling within me, layer by layer.
What have I done?
The moment those words echoed through my mind, a blinding light took me. I was suffused by it, and my arms burst outward to my sides as though strung out by an invisible force from within. I felt myself lifted off the ground for a moment from the impact of it as my head craned upward towards the sky. My eyes opened wide, and my vision cleared, though I regretted it for how bright the light was. I exhaled in a massive gasp and struggled to inhale again. I could bring nothing into me, not even air, for the volume of light my body shone out. No pain, not even what I’d felt over a century restraining the Calamity, could compare to the sensations wreathing themselves through my body now.
But my mind was still mine, for the moment, and I glimpsed the Master Sword through the storm of light. I had to bring it with me. I needed her with me. This would be all for naught if I couldn’t lay a hand upon the blade.
I lurched forward, doubling over in pain. My hands slapped roughly against the altar, but it was nothing against the burning sensation riddling my body. One hand drew back in reflex against my chest as my heart threatened to drum its way out. The other kept its grip on the altar as I desperately dragged myself towards the Sword That Seals the Darkness.
I felt as though I was fighting a windstorm. My body wanted nothing more than to be cast into the clouds. But I couldn’t relent. Not with Link depending on me. Not with everyone depending on me.
I grit my teeth and lunged forward. My chest was on fire, and my fingers squeezed harder into my skin to restrain whatever force wanted to erupt from it. I don’t know how, but I knew that time was growing short. My fingers were inches away from the Master Sword. I summoned the last of my will and extended my arm, finally feeling my fingers curl around the hilt.
In this storm of light growing ever brighter—to the point where I could see nothing but the golden glow around me—I allowed myself the slightest relief as I jerked the broken sword flat against my chest. My other hand joined it on the remnants of the blade, holding it tight against me as though it were my most precious possession.
Through everything, the only thing I could see beyond the light were the clouds above. I fixed my gaze on a single point above, trying to focus as my mind began to burn alongside my body.
“Link!” I shouted to the sky. My voice was utterly dire. The second half of my sentence faded in and out of my mind. I didn’t want to lose it. I didn’t want to lose everything I knew. I everyone I knew. All I loved. I didn’t want to lose me.
But I was drowning in light. There was no air: only a brilliant white fire that enveloped my body, heart, and mind. My eyes closed, and I searched. I searched through my mind for those words I needed to say. That message I had to pass onto Link. The haze of light obscured everything. Words were becoming difficult to recall, much less speak. I would’ve lost it all were it not for one thing I saw.
A memory. Through the hurricane of light, I saw a scene through a slit flickering as though between a cracked open door. I heaved myself toward it and blearily stared through it. I saw my countless memories playing through at blistering speed. Even so, I comprehended every single one. But where they slowed and let me linger were the ones where I saw him. I saw Link with me at the school at Hateno, in Faron at the preserve, and as I found a rare golden horse.
Then I found myself looking further back, and the memories played more slowly. I saw when he protected me from the blades of the Yiga, when he escorted me through the forest toward Hyrule Castle as the Calamity began, and when he gave his life for me near Fort Hateno. But most of all, I found the memories finally stopping to let me live in the moment after I’d sealed away Calamity Ganon, standing in Hyrule Field with him and him alone. In all those moments, and especially then, I saw Link’s eyes and the unwavering belief he had for me to achieve all I could for Hyrule.
That was the thought I latched onto. His hope. His belief. The one handhold in a storm that threatened to sweep me away. It was small, but it was enough. I forced my eyes open again, seeing the world through strange shades of purples, blues, greens, and golds. With the last of my strength, I let out a cry that rung across the entire plateau.
“Protect them all!”
The handhold broke, and light engulfed me within and without. I couldn’t comprehend what I felt for several long moments. I know I screamed, but instead of my voice, a long, bellowing, bestial wail trumpeted through the lands.
I couldn’t understand why the sound felt wrong yet normal at the same time. It felt wrong yet normal to feel my claws scrape against the ground. It felt strange yet normal to heavy my long, massive form upward. It felt odd yet normal to feel air flowing past me as I took flight. It felt normal for the sun to warm my white scales as I crested upward through the clouds. It felt perfectly normal to weave through the sky with ease.
But what felt strange were these sad images plaguing my mind.
This fear. What was it?
This regret. What was it?
This grief. What was it?
This longing. What was it?
This duty. What was it?
No… the duty felt right. The longing was obscure… but not entirely unfamiliar. But everything else felt wrong. It was foreign. It wasn’t mine.
But all that was fading. These images of strangers praising me, leaving me, scolding me, comforting me, and saving me were once crystal clear. But with every passing moment, to my relief, they were growing foggier. As they became hazier, eventually becoming listless smoke in my mind, water built up in the corners of my eyes.
Tears? A dragon does not weep. I don’t know why I wanted shed tears over the images of this stranger’s life. I didn’t want it. Any of it. I wanted to be in the sky where I belonged. I wanted to bask in my power and keep to this beautiful land.
I blinked, and the tears fell away, falling around me in a spiral to the corners of the land. Now, I could only see the beauty of the sky and the lands below in vibrant shades of green, blue, purple, and gold. I let out a triumphant cry as the haunting images in my mind faded completely. What torture they were.
Now they wouldn’t interfere. I could fulfill my duty and pour my power into something I cherished. And I had all the time in the world to do it.

This is probably me gonna be ranting about just Mineru, but I can't help it she interests me so much! Major spoilers about everything under cut
We don't get much time with her within the memories, but it's undeniable that she and Zelda were close. They're both scholars who would do anything for the people they love, even if the act is considered taboo!
When Zelda comes to her with her final plan, Mineru straight up scolds her and you can tell she wasn't doing it because Zelda was planning to do a forbidden act but rather because she was worried for what would happen to Zelda should she go through with it. Yet, when Zelda gives her reasoning, she doesn't stop her and even works to help her and ensure she is able to remain present even when her physical body has long passed, to ensure her niece's sacrifice isn't for nothing.
And that's another thing, Zelda is Rauru's decendant. Maybe a child many generations down the line, but still a decendant of her little brother who, a cording to the memory, had only recently died performing a similar sacrifice to what Zelda was proposing. Mineru had to watch her younger brother, the only remaining Zonai aside from herself, sacrifice himself, and now Zelda, the only thing she had left of him, wanted to do the same. And she let her.
Then there's her construct, a machine she built to ensure she could take part in the fight against the man who killed her brother. The man Zelda had sacrificed herself to give even the slightest glimmer of a chance to end! Can you imagine how long she'd been working and fine-tuning it? How she had to find a perfect method to preserve it so it wasn't damaged or lost before it's purposecould be fulfilled? It's not like she didn't know how long it would be, Zelda had to have told her that it's was over 10k years into the future. Can you imagine someone trying to make something with the intent of it lasting over thousands of years!? Knowing that if they made a miscalculation on the preservation or if some idiot tore it down somewhere, it would all be for nothing!? Knowing that there's an eye chance the hero Zelda had spoken of wouldn't even find the machine!?
And then the Purah Pad. Mineru was probably sitting in that pad for so long and when she first awoke it was to see Link with a transplant of her own younger brother's severed arm! She probably also saw Rauru's spirit as he guided Link along the tutorial and heard his memories and commentary about how the place has changes yet still remained the same. She'd see what the once great civilization they had created would have been reduced to, a silent factory of cogs and machines who only continue to do the jobs they were last ordered to do with no one to do them for anymore.
I just... really, really like Mineru and the concept of Mineru and what she represents. She is a true Last Zonai, trapped as a spirit and the only one left with the knowledge and capability to fulfill Zelda's final plan. Just imagine what she could do after the final battle if she were placed in the same room as Purah or Robbie! The many long talks she likely had with Zelda as they both geeked out over each other's technology! The pain she had to endure for thousands upon thousands of years as she grieved the deaths of her little brother and his family, her entire species, Zelda's fate, and possibly even her own death! We can see it was neither a quick nor peaceful death she suffered either.

so i sort of half accidentally did the end of totk on monday, i had over 130 hours and slightly over 50% of the game done and did the second to last fight with 3 hearts left and no way to heal but fairies after i gave up multiple times thinking the game might be trying to force me to fight a certain way xD
so im still playing it and am aiming for the 100% but i dont think theres gonna be much more to discover story wise the game is really fun and has a lot of detail and love put into it that you can really see, the music is fantastic as well, some of the characters get more love which is great but the story is … well disappointing but not surprising, especially in its treatment of ganondorf, who still feels incredibly flat as a character, which was to be expected but also … you cant fault people (including me) for faintly hoping theyd do something more interesting tho i will say the end fight is really well done and i cant think of a way to top that in terms of epicness xD
anyway, some unfiltered thoughts and opinions in no particular order (keep in mind i know its viddy game logic uwu but still some things can really destroy the immersion; and also i like to think too hard about the stuff i care about so take this with a grain of salt, i never expected the story to be world changing but i want to remind you that i am criticizing it bc i love this franchise)
--what the hell happened to all the sheikah tech?? botws story gets mentioned a few times but never is it mentioned what happened to all the tons of tech lying around everywhere? if they dismantled the towers for purah to build her new ones around i guess thats fine, but all the srhines? the titans ??? THE SHRINE OF LIFE??? its all gone, esepcially the shrine of life irks me bc the cave is still there and its still called by its bame but its nothing but a cave in a vague shape of how the buidling was it absolutely drives me crazy bc its so dumb?? even if it all stopped working for some reason why would you dismantled it all and even then where did the material go?? why would you dismanlted an neitre building like that anyway?? if you want to have a cave there just have it be half collapsed, if all sheikah tech has gotten useless just leave it there but overgrown?? and why is all of purahs tech still working then? zelda doesnt seem to care about it anymore either even tho shes been so obsessed with it for so long? the titans how would you even MOVE them?? you CANNOT tell me that all this tech that survived tens of thousands of years just went poof within a few years; and sometimes it even feels .. insulting? like you know how much robelo cared for cherry and now shes tiny and just serves as a way to buy fotos for your collection? the fact that the shrine of life is fully gone but the cave is vaguely shaped like its interior and where the bed used to be is a healing pool of water too? like idk if im just insane but it feels like 'haha lol remember what used to be here? get it? the water heals you like the bed in the shrine of life and lol there was the stairs HAHA remember? its gone now for no reason.lmao.' to be clear i like having some mysteries and all but that is just …. so weird? when i discovered the shrine of life i was so taken aback i didnt know what to do, it really broke my immersion, by alot even, it just makes it feel even more like all sheikah tech was replaced by much cooler (tm) sonau tech
--what happend to the sonau people? we only know that rauru and mineru are the last two remaining ones back then but … what made them die out like that? this is by far not as important to me as the issue with the sheikah tech but still feels like a point that could have been mentioned
--as much as i like the open world and how free you are to do things your own way but, regardign the dragon tears i think they should have been locked more behind story progression, i got all of them rather early on and it made it a lil frustrating to play through the other story parts bc you know the truth but you cant tell anyone and everyone around you is acting like a dumbass running after fake zelda while the real one is floating around above you, and i know thats partly my fault for getting them all so early but it still felt like some could have been more well hidden or locked or something since theres no hint to when it would fit to do which one; i expecpted impa to travel to each one but it seemed like she appeared on only a few here and there- additionally i fully expected her to be more important, that she would have an actual involment trying to help zelda undragonfy but that turned out to be very wrong lmao
--why are the enemies in the underground mining sonanium? ganondorf didnt seem itnerested at all in any of their tech, only in the mystery stones (only one too, he didnt seem to want any more of them either) they dont use it for anything? at least the ones on the surface collected stuff they could eat or use for fighting?
--did mineru really build herself a robot body just to fight ganondorf for a bit and then leave? as the last of the sonau, even tho long dead too, why wouldnt she tell their history and knowledge or something and instead if just helping a lil in the fight and then go poof (i half expected purah to be a surprise sage since the spirit one would have fit her i think)
--the zelda being the white dragon plot point lost alot of weight to me when it was just .. resolved like that in the end, i know she spent thousands of years like that and all but it seemed like a much heavier decision that later on felt a little less flat after fidning mineru even tho i felt like i didnt care at all at first bc of the way i found out ,and i half expected there to be an extra mission to try and find her soul again since that apparently gets lost when you do the whole dragon thing, but in the end that wasnt a problem at all, two ghosts and link (somehow naked again) blasting her with some magic(tm) and boom shes back and well and fine woohoo it was a non problem after all i didnt expect her to stay dragon since that would mean the end of the legend of zelda basically, but still it took away alot of the weight of her decision to me? like i get undragonfying her before the end would be difficult since you can get material off of her but still i hoped for something other than boom it resolved itself and i thoguht and worried about it for nothing honestly a post game or even another title where the main focus wouldnt be desstroying yet anyother one note evilest guy of them all and isntead the goal is to bring zeldas soul back and undragon her or something would have been a cool idea tbh tho i know its unrealistic
--did ganondorf think turning himself into a dragon would end the world somehow? did he mean the lil evil goo clouds he spit at you in the last fight to end the world? and how come that he was vunerable to fight? none of the other dragons could be hurt and for an 'immortal' dragon he sure went down fast also how did the stone get back on his forehead? you need to eat it to dragonfy yourself and zelda doesnt have her stone out either (i know viddy games logic but still) (on another note, gan shoving half his arm in his own mouth felt really cursed to watch)
--into WHAT exactly wanted gan to reshape the world into?? only destroying it is such a non reason if you want to rule it? theres nothing left to rule if you kill everything in it?? he just gonna play cards with some bokblins or what -i really wanted to fight ganondorf on the surface, not in his lil miasma incubation cave again :(
--so …. why he evil? are we really doing the and WHOOP suddendnly theres the eviliest guy of the world and he hates your guts for some reason thing again? no tension with the gerudo that seemed to follow him in the lil cutscene we see and the ones that went on raurus side? no actual origin? does he have ANYONE to talk to normally or did he just surround himself by monsters all the time or abadon everyone that once followed him once he got his power up?? you can make any design or fight as good as it can possibly be but in the end its still gonna feel hollow if the character has no character besides evil even the fake zelda wasnt actually him and just a lil puppet made of miasma so even him fucking with people is a little less interesting when he was actually just marinading in his lil goop cave, and the lil hand wink he gives you at phase two can only do so much lmao
--ganondorf is cool and all, but tbh he feels more like the evil miasma goop guy than anything else --why are the old sonau ruins in hyrule so different from the rest? like we know now that they arent actually a civilization from the sky alone but were even in the underground too, and all of their ruins have that blocky white style to it, the supposedly sonau ruins in phirone for example, albeit they share the dragon theme the style on the outside is very much different? and the ancient ruins from the other races dont match it either --are the sheikah descendants of the mixing of sonau and hylians? the white hair and third eye theme would fit to the only alive sonaus we see having white hair (fur?), the literal third eye and their affinity to techonology similar to the sheikah, and zelda having both light and time powers would make sense if its yet another descendant thing, but that would mean zelda was at least part sheikah .. (ngl white haired zelda might look pretty neat actually) but also … it didnt seem like sonia and rauru have been together all that long and no mention or even hint to them having children … which given that both of them die would be an important thing to mention no?
--why cant you do anything with the dongos but feed them????????? i wanna ride them :(
--where is kashiwa????????????????? they talk about him like hes a lost legend
--putting in all the amiibo stuff is cool and annoying at the same time, i spent 5 hours fighting my way throguh the underground to follow treasure maps and found 3 nigh identcal link hats from past games in a row, then two other parts of similar, then two aiimbo weapons and then jsut yesterday another one from a bigger quest that i expected more of; getting the armor sets of past games is cool if you want them but if i did i would have just gotten the amiibos back in botw, my inevntory already feels super bloated with all the new and old armor sets and now the amiibo stuff as well even tho i have like .. half of it all atm (and dont go and argue 'oh so complaining about more content for free???' yes. yes i am.)
--whats with this game and making link almost naked? rauru saving you from death? naked. (annoying) survival shrines? naked. weird teleport to alternate ghost dimension to blast zelda with magic power tm to solve all problems? naked.
--(added in edit) im glad dorephan didnt die!! i fully expected him to have died offscreen or something to make way for everyones favorite fish
--(added in edit) so are definitely other lands besides hyrule if yona came from there, also lol
--the story feels, espeically once you see the last cutscene, very …. uncomfortable to me if dare to think about it more than just taking everythign as its said to you, like … the oh so perfect descednants of the gods(what) marry a normal hylian lady and sourround themselves with perfetly obedient faceless servants of the other races so the perfect and good kingdom tm is born and oh suddendly theres an evil brown man (makign him grey doesnt change the implications, if anything, it makes it worse bc they wont even stand for it and instead are trying to hide it behind uuuuh no no its fine hes blue actally kinda way) from the desert that attacks the perfect good kingdom and king, then he swears alliance to them only to betray and murder da queen right away to get his hands on a super power the perfect and good king held and would have never never used it in a bad way nono and now they need to defend it by all means and at the end woohoo zelda has now again the perfect kingdom with no opposition except the yiga who are (as much as i love them) mostly played for laughs or .. well, evil(tm) as epic and cool the dragon fight was, zelda being the slim tiny white/gold/blue dragon and ganondorf being the evil spiky big black and red dragon and them literally being called white/black dragon feels like wow they arent even trying to hide the black and white storytelling huh (i know its a design trope to the bad be black(color) and the good anything else and spiky vs round and soft blah blah but that doesnt make it any better .. maybe even worse? idk)
the way nintendy was keeping stuff a secret and hinting around so much made me feel like it would finally be a little more nuanced and then it turned out to be even flatter than before and all that secrecy(?) was only to keep dragon zelda plotpoint a secret, something that was resolved no problem in the end anyway (i didnt need zelda to stay dragon but .. it all just lost so much weight the way it was done at the end)
-- (added in edit) master koga is the best character and no one can beat him, the most joy i felt was seeing him again and i am not joking, i wish i could talk to him normally tho without him being able to see through my yiga disguise :( im so glad he didnt die tho bc if he actually went to gan he would 100% be dead within seconds
--(added in edit2) i forgot to mention but was just reminded that link getting his arm back felt super weird too, so really everything that meant major changes got reversed basically ... coool ...back to status quo i guess, couldnt he if he wasnt missing it at least have it be discolored somehow? or scarred? any reminder? zelda too even, could she also have some sort of scar or similar due to her transformation ??
--(added in edit2) so where did the mystery stones even come from? gans and zeldas are gone after dragonfying i guess so ...what?
so in summary, im not eloquent enough to properly analyse all the problematic/questionable stuff and put it into the right words, but these are my random thoughts just spilled out, theres gonna be things i missed, forgot, or gonna think about later, maybe ill add it maybe not
again take it with a grain of salt, the game is still one of the most fun games i have ever played, my problems with it lie majorly in the story, its still very much worth playing!

The hero will not make it.
Rauru pours every scintilla of light he has left into those grievous wounds. He presses it all into the wrist he's yet to let go of since that fateful clasp, a wellspring funnelled through the anchoring point of their contact. So tremendous an effort is it that another piece of his arm crumbles, quicker to decay without the blessing of Zonai blood nor heart nor stone, peeling off and fading into nothing within strands of dispelled radiance.
     Still, it is not enough.
The right arm is beyond salvaging. The Gloom: a loathsome force merely kept at bay with his light's slower abrasion. With what it has devoured, devours, and seeks to continue devouring as its master recovers his strength, the hero — Link, a faint voice chimes, sweet with conviction and love for her swordsman — will not make it.
What an enormously cataclysmic thing to reckon with.
Somewhere in the far distance, what sounds startlingly like the time bell knells a solemn rhythm. His spirit cannot cast shadows, but it paints a seafoam glow over Link as Rauru looms over his body — hand clutching ever tighter, as though his hold alone could pierce past the trappings of mortal flesh and erase every sliver of rot in one fell swoop. He reaches for the Gloom again, tendrils of incanted light enveloping the source in a shimmering embrace, and once more, his magic does not purge as cleanly as he wants it to. Once more, another fragment of his remains falls away.
This is foolish, a part of him thinks; the part mired in memories of wanton bloodshed, of surviving at whatever the cost, of a time before a tempering kindness. Foolish, and needlessly cruel. He has seen damage of this severity wrought before — has treated it before.
At his core, he knows what must be done. His hesitation, in the face of that, is not a mercy: it is another moment suspended between life and death, another opportunity for the Gloom to spread, another tally against the odds of what would now be a miracle.
     Another failing.
Rauru does not need to breathe, yet he nevertheless finds himself going through its invisible motions. It calms him, marginally, and his mind clears enough for the thought to turn constructive. Yes, he knows what must be done. The question now is: what is he to do with the repercussions?
—What repercussions? Another part of him thinks; the one locked in shame, drowning in regret, fraying with the need to pen this story to its very end.
The flow of his light stills.
It resumes a split second later, surging forth to continue hindering the creep of darkness, but his grip loosens. His fingers, slowly, unwind.
What repercussions, the thought continues, when it is only the right arm that has to be dealt with? A right arm that has to be accounted for?
A right arm that he, blessedly, still possesses?
Link's chances of survival do not seem so slight, now.
( Rauru's chances of atoning do not seem so elusive, now. )
It is a simple thing, grasping that ruined hand. Honing his light to burn through everything — skin, sinew, blood, marrow — is, too, effortless with how densely the corrosion is seeped into the flesh. The Gloom lingers, harder to contain for a moment with no corporeal bearer, but that will soon be remedied.
Link's fingers are the last ashes to be swept away. From there, it is just a matter of connecting.
Rauru does not say the words as he threads their vitalities together. Vows like these have always been a show of devotion more than anything, anyway. When this arm is all he can hope to offer to Link — to Zelda, to Mineru, to Sonia, to Hyrule, to everyone and everything he's loved and lost — what could possibly indicate his devotion more?

Rauronia: A Zonai treasure
A Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom fanfiction for Shipuary 2024 day 25 treasure featuring King Rauru and Sonia. This is the origins of how Sonia become the Sage of Time as well the purpose of the Secret Stone in Zonai society.
Sonia was a bit nervous as Rauru took her to a secret chamber in the Temple of Hylia that she never know about. Soon, Rauru open a stone door to show her seven clear gems similar to the stones that Rauru and his sister have as he explains, "These are our remaining Secret Stones, Sonia. A Zonai settlement have seven sages with seven Secret Stones for each one, but when most of our people left, me and Mineru were given these stones as well as our own to give to our people that would return in a few millenniums to check on our progress in helping your people against the monsters of darkness. As Mineru and I are the only Zonai in high positions at the moment, I think we should make a member of the many species of Hyrule a sage as a symbol of our unity." Rauru then turn to Sonia and said to her, "I want you to be the Hylia sage, Sonia." and she was surprised at what Rauru just said as he take one of the Secret Stone and hand it to Sonia. As the Hylia woman take the Secret Stone, it float up and become a neckline for Sonia while it turn yellow.

Tears of the Kingdom, emotional distress edition. Thoughts and speculation based on all Geoglyph memories.
My baby my sweet girl noooo ;_; Was literally sobbing watching that last memory, especially when Link came out of it surrounded by Zelda's signature Silent Princess flowers, oh my god.
She fully expected she was sacrificing herself. She might have still been 'alive', but she knew she would no longer be Zelda. She'd just be... the Light Dragon, Restorer of the Master Sword. And that'd be okay, because she's ensured the Sages of Wind, Water, Fire, and Lightning would still be around. She's arranged something with Mineru. And Link would have the Master Sword. If they don't have her, well, that's fine in her mind.
(I suspect that, since you need all the geoglyph memories for the True Ending, and you only get the dragon memory once you get all the others, the True Ending may be restoring Zelda to herself. Otherwise I will park myself outside Miyamoto's office and cry until he takes pity on me, tbh.)
Mineru has to be involved somehow. There's that little blue flame thing that goes into the slate she's entrusting her with - could Mineru, as the Sage of Spirit, have been able to separate out a little bit of Zelda's spirit to remain in the slate? If she can ensure that the slate ends up in Link's hands, which we know it does via the Steward Construct, then maybe Mineru will be able to restore Zelda's spirit to her body.
I strongly suspect Mineru will be involved, actually, because hers is the only stone still unaccounted for. Wind, Water, Fire, and Lightning are nice and straightforward. Four original Sages, they have descendants, they build their Temples and keep their stones there for their descendants to claim when they awaken as Sages in the present. Sonia's stone was the one claimed by Ganondorf. Rauru's stayed in his hand for all that time, went to Zelda, travelled back in time with her (so the same stone existed twice), and now it's. Well. In her.
But what about Mineru and her stone? There are no Zonai in modern Hyrule, so no obvious descendant. Her descendants could have been Hylian, of course - Zelda is descended from Rauru, after all - but there's no immediately obvious successor. And Mineru's power was to separate her spirit from her body. What if she doesn't need a successor because she's still around in spirit form, her original body long gone but her spirit persisting?
I suspect that once the four basic-element Sages have been awakened, we'll move on to Mineru. She's very prominent for a character who only appears briefly in a few memories - the other Sages are fully voiced, sure, but they're not even named, whereas Mineru is a) the one who brings up Draconification in the first place, b) the one that has that interesting ability, and c) the one Zelda specifically mentions before swallowing her stone.
Yeah, Mineru has to be involved.
For now, I'm distraught how are you :D After the memory I just kinda. Hurled Link to the nearest tower and went to sit on Zelda's head for a while. (Tried to pull the Master Sword too, didn't have enough stamina, alas.) Just. Damn. Damn.
(That's not even getting into all the other memories, namely Sonia's death and Rauru's reaction. Ow my heart. This game is going to emotionally ruin me.)
