The hero will not make it.
Rauru pours every scintilla of light he has left into those grievous wounds. He presses it all into the wrist he's yet to let go of since that fateful clasp, a wellspring funnelled through the anchoring point of their contact. So tremendous an effort is it that another piece of his arm crumbles, quicker to decay without the blessing of Zonai blood nor heart nor stone, peeling off and fading into nothing within strands of dispelled radiance.
     Still, it is not enough.
The right arm is beyond salvaging. The Gloom: a loathsome force merely kept at bay with his light's slower abrasion. With what it has devoured, devours, and seeks to continue devouring as its master recovers his strength, the hero — Link, a faint voice chimes, sweet with conviction and love for her swordsman — will not make it.
What an enormously cataclysmic thing to reckon with.
Somewhere in the far distance, what sounds startlingly like the time bell knells a solemn rhythm. His spirit cannot cast shadows, but it paints a seafoam glow over Link as Rauru looms over his body — hand clutching ever tighter, as though his hold alone could pierce past the trappings of mortal flesh and erase every sliver of rot in one fell swoop. He reaches for the Gloom again, tendrils of incanted light enveloping the source in a shimmering embrace, and once more, his magic does not purge as cleanly as he wants it to. Once more, another fragment of his remains falls away.
This is foolish, a part of him thinks; the part mired in memories of wanton bloodshed, of surviving at whatever the cost, of a time before a tempering kindness. Foolish, and needlessly cruel. He has seen damage of this severity wrought before — has treated it before.
At his core, he knows what must be done. His hesitation, in the face of that, is not a mercy: it is another moment suspended between life and death, another opportunity for the Gloom to spread, another tally against the odds of what would now be a miracle.
     Another failing.
Rauru does not need to breathe, yet he nevertheless finds himself going through its invisible motions. It calms him, marginally, and his mind clears enough for the thought to turn constructive. Yes, he knows what must be done. The question now is: what is he to do with the repercussions?
—What repercussions? Another part of him thinks; the one locked in shame, drowning in regret, fraying with the need to pen this story to its very end.
The flow of his light stills.
It resumes a split second later, surging forth to continue hindering the creep of darkness, but his grip loosens. His fingers, slowly, unwind.
What repercussions, the thought continues, when it is only the right arm that has to be dealt with? A right arm that has to be accounted for?
A right arm that he, blessedly, still possesses?
Link's chances of survival do not seem so slight, now.
( Rauru's chances of atoning do not seem so elusive, now. )
It is a simple thing, grasping that ruined hand. Honing his light to burn through everything — skin, sinew, blood, marrow — is, too, effortless with how densely the corrosion is seeped into the flesh. The Gloom lingers, harder to contain for a moment with no corporeal bearer, but that will soon be remedied.
Link's fingers are the last ashes to be swept away. From there, it is just a matter of connecting.
Rauru does not say the words as he threads their vitalities together. Vows like these have always been a show of devotion more than anything, anyway. When this arm is all he can hope to offer to Link — to Zelda, to Mineru, to Sonia, to Hyrule, to everyone and everything he's loved and lost — what could possibly indicate his devotion more?

sorry i keep coming back to totk rants, but something that utterly baffles me from a game design perspective especially is
who, in their right mind, would think to put similar objectives with the same characters in the EXACT same place as its previous game when already reusing the same exact map (no, single rocks springkled around isnt a meaningful change, fight me)
like from a purely logical point of view its just ... not logical?? and TWICE so when most players will have played the previous game, so now that the exploration, which was the main driving point of it, isnt as satisfying simply bc you know most locations and what is what, the thing you need to do is subvert it as in you go to that location and theres something else now or something that leads to a new reveal, but not NOTHING either, bc you likely cared about what youd find- the satori mountain was such a cool mysterious place, so now you head to it to see what is now and its nothing but maybe an obvious treasure chest? thats both lazy (i realy use that since its way overused by people missusing it) and just ... it might be meant as a lil nod so that there isnt nothing at all but to me it feels even more condescending as if there were literally nothing instead
satori isnt here anymore? thats weird if its always been there, so you go find a cause, maybe theres a fissure somewhere you can enter a large cave system, an hidden entrance to the underground that reveals there is something corrupting the place somwhere nearby but not exactly in the same spot- make it into a bossfight at which end satori gets cleansed- maybe it got captured and taken somewhere else, to a place that was kinda neat but didint serve a big fucntion in botw like maybe it was dragged somwhere into the big tabantha canyon, or to the forgotten temple
you try to visit rito village but the snow and cold there got so bad that you cant even reach it without special gear, and when you do reach it its utterly frozen in thick ice and not a single soul is there, the perch of vah medoh is knocked over building a bridge as a subtle hint as to in what direction perhaps, its intriguing bc clearly they have to be SOMEWHERE, maybe they tried to use vah medoh to evacuate but bc its losing power and doesnt have a skilled pilot they crash land it into the mountains, now trapped there and due to the storm not able to send anyone out to get help, maybe some did but they didnt make it and you can find them on your way and rescue them, and bc of the storm being so bad no one can get out and no one can get in (except for our special boi linky ofc) and even after the storm has weakened they dont immediately go back and act like everythings normal, maybe theres an extra mission afterwards helping them rebuild the village but not exactly the same as it was but fortified, different to account for things like this happening again, establishing the crashsite of vah medoh as a second outpost, or a temple, to thank it for bringing them out of immedaite danger but couldnt go all the way
theres so many places that are so clearly modeled around botw that are entirely unused now bc they had to remove all things shiekah for no reason, the holes they left jsut being holes where somethings clearly missing or some chest with a gem in it while the new shrine thing is within view distance a few meters away, might as well have put them in the exact same place bc it really doesnt make a difference
(like alot of those ideas im using for the rewrite which changes many things but you get the point right??)
and its even worse imo with the building stuff, bc now you dont even have to journey there you can fly glide and literally drive there instantly like a giant skip button so you cant even appreaciate the way to it, you skip to one important part to the next
and then points of interest are REPEATED AGAIN, like with shrines and lightroots and settlements and big mines- that is the opposite of satisfying gameplay, you dont have to explore shit bc its all in the same place which is probably why they only did tiny changes to those few spots and nothing else bc they knew most people would run right to those so it gives the illusion of changes (which are half reversable or barely a change at all) and even those are STILL meaningless
its right up there with having even MORE grind with less substance to it than in botw, the shrines and krogs got a lil old but at least the environment, its subtle storytelling etc were something- and totk just bloated everything with more little meaningless collectables while not changing anything meaningfully (and instead pretends that some things where never there and those new boring things were always there)
more shriens with shorter puzzles or none at all, more krogs with the same reward system, over a hundred tiny caves that all blend together bc they are all so similar and you really only do them for yet another colelctable for old gear and ONE cool new one with a bad effect after which the things collected become uselessreally, souls to collect to buy you a single armor set, rewards being largley reused old stuff from botw (imo you should have a chest in your house, yes YOUR house, that got most of the standard versions of botws armor in it so you dont have to buy it all again??? but you gotta think of going home first and dont have to use it- make new versions of them alternatively so you can choose if you want the old one or new one and also LEAVE ONE AT YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT HAVING TO SELL IT SO YOUT INVENTORY ISNT AS ENDLESSLY SCROLLING AS YOUR STUPID ARROW BAR)
theres new effects from food and armor thats largely useless (like the attack when hot?? why wouldnt you you jsut combine an armor and a potion- put on hot armor and drink an attack potion? its way more efficient no?? idk i found it to be yet another effect thing to bloat my inventory especially when NPCs keep giving you shitty effect food)
the whole sonanium (zonaite?) collecting with multiple ways to convert it into yet another currency??? huh???? AND have it be the thing for you to autobuild with?? when you need it upgrade your battery which takes an insane amount of those stones?? wells, while finally an actual well are NOW ALSO LIKE A COLLECTABLE and im gonna take a wild guess that the reward is utterly disappointing too
the fairies are all blocked by much more annoying means than in botw (like i wouldnt want to carry those NPCs three meters away in their little cart antoehr time please) and the amount of material AND MONEY NOW you need is so much higher for no reason (if its their attempt to make the game harder its the lamest way to do it)-
all while instead of expanding on the foundation of botw they ripped it out to build a new one while pretending they are both there (im so so slaty about this .... a sequel like this should expand upon the stuff of the first game, both in theme, narrative, mechanics and more and not ... replace it with slightly different versions of it while abandoning everything established before and really only using it as a way to skip having to make you care about some characters bc you might still care about them from the other game)
i could go on, as always lol, anyway, i really really dont get why this got into the final game ..

I didn't see this elsewhere so here are the maps for the three dragons. A couple notes, it takes 10 in game hours for the dragon to renew scale ability (it will glow). Only the head of the dragon spawns elemental attacks but otherwise you take no damage riding if properly armored. I've heard that aerocuda will attack but I only got close enough to one on naydra
Dinraal - the only dragon to go into the sky, though briefly. Dinraal definitely goes up and down the most. Theres a point in the depths where its really low to the ground, near one of the lightroots it goes by. This loop is the longest at a little over two in game days. Double fire effect so wear your armor
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Naydra - the most challenging dragon for me to find, personally. Most of its surface time is pretty high up and it's cruising high in the depths too. This loop is the shortest at almost a day and a half. Double ice so wear your armor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Farosh - I think farosh is the easiest to find because so much of its route is over lake hylia but maybe thats just me. Takes a little over a day and a half. On the surface there will be a constant thunderstorm near it

Happy hunting

Welp I’ve completed totk and it’s been about a month so I’d like to give my silly little thoughts on it
I’ll put my thoughts in category's things I enjoyed, moments that made me lose my mind, and of course things I hate
spoilers below obvs
Enjoyed
The game plays so good! You can do just about anything you can think of. They definitely set a new bar for quality. oh those poor future game designers
the title “legend of zelda” actually works this time lol
There’s sooo many little details in this game it makes me happy
they added more speech bubbles for npcs depending on what is happening
I love the new characters! Makes Hyrule more alive
Yona is so kind and pretty she even fixed Link’s zora armor!
Penn my writing partner that whole side adventure was fun and hilarious.
Mattison! MY GODDAUGHTER I LOVE THAT ENTIRE FAMILY.
Gomo helped me make my first $1000 so I’m legally obliged to kiss him on his head.
Tauro another history nerd. I like his dynamic with Paya!
I love the constructs all of them. The fact that they were made so long ago and yet still fulfill the roles they were made for make me sad. Plus the fact they actively miss the people who made them and wish for company adds to the sadness
I liked how they upped the difficulty of the shrines I’ll admit I had to look some of them up and then eminently get humbled by some of them
same with fixing some of the towers I’m embarrassed by the one that had weapons jamming the door
Anything that happens in Tarrey town.
Helping the hudson family prepare a great departure gift for their daughter? Beautiful
The dream house? Amazing
The fact you can take a pic of Mattison and show it to Rhondson and Hudson to cheer them up? Literal tears in my eyes
THE FACT THAT KILTON IS THERE AND WANTS PEOPLE TO LIKE MONSTERS AND IT’S WORKING?? Priceless
The lurelin village quest! Link saved an entire village and helped rebuild it and they give him the greatest rewards
The fact that Link can join the yiga clan. Yea fuck that Link guy I can’t stand his short blond ass Glory to Master Kohga
As you can probably tell I really like the side quests
I adored all the boss fights from slamming my face into ice to fighting against Shiver splatoon.
Gohma it’s good to see you again.
I really enjoyed the gibdo queen fight my only regret is not getting the sand boots before the fight
speaking of gibdos I was kinda sad they weren’t redeads but then I remembered Oh yea the royal family made redeads not ganondorf
And of course the best fight(s) ever MASTER KOGHA! GLORY BE TO HIM! I knew that guy wasn’t dead and I don’t think he’s dead after that last fight either bros got cartoon logic on his side. The fights weren’t hard but I liked seeing Link get run over
The ganondorf fights were AMAZING when his health bar took over all the way to the side of the screen I burst out giggling.
THE DEPTHS
I LOVE THE DEPTHS I HAVE EVERY LIGHTROOT DONE I LIVE THERE NOW SO SORRY HYRULE I CAN NOT SAVE YOU FOR I AM IN UNDERTALE AND COLLECTING CLOTHES OF PAST HEROS
The addition of caves and wells is nice
The well in Kakariko even has blood on the walls down there <3 great call back.
but no demon from hell trying to drag you under just a cutie patootie learning to cook for her family
the fact that there's an underground gerudo cemetery right under the ruins of Arbiter's grounds a bit fucked up but it’s another great call back
the fact we got something about zora ages and how gorons are born.
Lose my mind
The fact that a good portion of the constructs names are fucking Steward I call some of them Stewies
Purah pad... sounds like a hygiene product
The lady that calls Link a freak then sees he’s attractive and gives him an egg
Actually I feel like there’s even more people that find Link attractive from botw
the dick riding from the sign dude is crazy
The fact when Zelda said “Link you must come find me” and I followed up with “Why don’t you try to find me”... shouldn’t have said that
Misko WHO IS THIS PERSON WHY DID THEY HAVE ALL THIS STUFF
IT’S BECAUSE OF MISKO I CAN’T TELL WHAT’S CANON AND WHAT’S NOT WHY DID THEY MENTION THE FIERCE DEITY SO CASUAL AND HOW THEY KNOW I HAVE THE FULL SET OF SOMETHING TO GET ANOTHER REWARD
The fucking Cece side adventure
The entirety of Goron City. I swear Regandorf has something against Gorons first he was feeding them to a dragon in oot NOW HE’S GIVING THEM CRACK ROCKS
AND HE GOT MY BOI YUNOBO MAJORA’S MASKED
zora’s domain more like Delfino Plaza
And now I’m in Splatoon!
BLOND! NO ABS! NOT A VAI!
Riju still needs her high chair for her throne!!
the memories are ok but because you can get any of them whenever spoiled some shit. Like Sonia dying and Zelda turning into a dragon I didn’t even know there was a forth dragon until the final memory I just picked up the flowers and said “Welp i don’t know how to fix this”
the end of the bluepee quest for Kolton THAT left me speechless
in fact WHAT IS WITH THIS GAME AND MAKING PEOPLE EAT GEMS
“Link I pray...” GIRL YOU NEED TO STOP PRAYING IT’S CLEAR THE GODS DO NOT LIKE YOU
Above every bargainer statue is a goddess statue and that is cool and has some lore implications
Link suffering from the Tony hawk affect and how is zelda not How did they convince all of hyrule she’s the princess
Jumping monsters with the avatars
the sages mask making me think of majora’s mask
Hate
I’ll be up front about it right now I have not a single care about this story’s main plot which is sad cause it had a great opening
look as a gamer totk is great but as a lore enthusiast I’m going insane
i like the timeline and I’m never expecting the games to perfectly line up I mean cmon most of the games take in-between hundreds to thousands of years there ain’t no way
but to me totk doesn’t like a retcon of the timeline. it feels like a retcon of botw
I’ve always held onto the theory that botw takes place in a world where the timelines finally become one.
And I’m aware nintendo wanted to make it friendly to new players who didn’t play botw but... it’s a sequel
Don’t give me the whole “Majora’s mask is a sequel to OOT and those two are def different games” Cause 1 those games are over 20 years old so it’s not a sin to want a zelda game with a sequel that actually feels like one ( I ain’t ever forgiving nintendo for cancelling the tp sequel) and 2 totk takes feeling like a different game to the extreme by literally getting rid of parts that happened in botw
it literally contradicts it's self all the damn time
if Link is always with Zelda why does know one recognize him he’s on the missing poster with her cause everyone knows the princess
the disappearance of almost all sheika tech feels genially insulting
the fact that they just sideline the sheika in general is fucking insulting
the shrines?? the towers?? Cherry, Robbie’s most prized possession being reduced into something so small and now only has photos?!?!
THE DIVINE BEASTS????MY SLATE?!?! THE FUCKING SHRINE OF RESERECTION
And I know the running theory is that they went back underground or repurposed but do you know how much tech that is? to just take down somehow and then not see it any more the most you see is the guardians legs in the towers
Only like 2 maybe 3 people commented on Link’s fucked up arm and in the end he doesn’t even keep it! Rauru literally said it was unsalvageable
and at the end Zelda is just... fine Like no scaring or anything just saved by two ghosts who I didn’t think could do that
I hate the zonai I didn’t really think of them in botw cause I thought it’s just another tribed that helped 10,000 years ago and died out but noped they went from being a warrior tribe to god like beings who lived in the sky
they are the biggest inconsistencies and are just the ancient sheika with new coat of paint and for some reason there’s only two of them now
Honestly to me they kinda sound like colonizers and the fact there are minning facilities everywhere in the depths doesn’t help
Also Rauru your plan to seal Ganondorf failed! Twice!
And ganondorf what was your plan exactly why did you do all this I’ve seen better villain backstories in Splatoon and Kirby. This whole story is just black and white
Don’t think I didn’t notice how you changed the labyrinths Nintendo those bars on the floor weren’t there before
the fact Yunobo isn’t using daruk’s protection
The thunder helm is missing?? One of the gerudo’s most important piece of culture. a vital part of botw story too. Like yea you can get a copy from the yiga but where’s the real thing
Rito village... what did they do to you
No mention of Revali
The weirdest personality changes
the fact that they just sidelined Teba. you know the forth person to help you with the divine beasts an absolute powerhouse in aoc. the guy to be described as crazy and rude but knows his worth. Revali’s biggest fan??
Nope give the job to Tulin the character it seems alot of people didn’t know existed in botw. “Over shadowed by his dad” kid was like 5 and all he did was watch Link and Teba train and suddenly he’s hot shit with a never before seen magic ability that he just has
I liked rito village cause it’s two main character from their had to train to get to where they were
Like Tulin’s ok but it’s bad story telling you telling me all the new champs are now leaders of their respected societies but Teba is the only one to get sidelined (don’t give me the whole but in “age of calamity...” a noncanon game shouldn’t be used for a main story and if that would be the case the new champions fighting styles should be just like that game then)
Also I can’t tell how many years have passed cause why is Molli (Harth’s kid) Still small I thought Tulin and her where around the same age
Kass not being in the story obviously takes the game down to a 7/10 :(
And yea I’m aware that some people think he’ll be in a dlc later but that’s not an excuse for him not being in the base game.
Zora’s domain is exactly as I expected it to be but man Sidon you really are just here to be eye candy his ability sucks
god Sidon Teba you two used to be so blood thirsty in age of calamity what happened
why the fuck is it called gloom it’s always been malice and why did it only effect weapons and not the bows and shields
Speaking off where did the elemental weapons go? the different arrows? No one talks about them did Nintendo really get rid of them for the fused ability. they could have just added more power to them if you matched the elements right
The sages are just diet champions and I can’t tell, especially with the direction it seems to be going, if they have the same names as the sages in oot/ww cause in the zora murals you can read they talk about the sage Ruto in both games and we all thought they were talking about oot ruto falling in love with a hylian
I question this cause of the goat/llama/ whatever the fuck they are shares a sages name if that’s the case they really are just diet champions
WOLF LINK AMIIBO DOESN’T WORK LIKE IN BOTW THEY PUT MY BOY THROUGH THE MEAT GRINDER THIS GAME SUCKS -3/10
I’d love to here what some of you guys think cause I may be deranged about the zelda series but my friends aren’t lmao
But yea those are my thoughts it’s a shame that I game I’ve waited for years for isn’t to my fancy but I’ve been in the fandom game for a long time so I know exactly what to do!
Ignore it!
I’ll make my own totk story and lore!
With blackjack and Koroks!

im squeezing in a little more zelda and i ran into the painter guy again...what even is the point of him in this game?? lol
its so hard to focus on shrines and not koroks...i use the same map for both!! but i only have two weeks to get them all, so i gotta hustle
hebra is so big and so snowy and i hate it here.
idk what it is. normally i LOVE snowy video game places. but in botw/totk they are the pits.
i might have to do this (hebra) in small doses lol
i made it to the edge of the map! this big canyon was always so freaky to me but then again i'm obsessed with map edges
i love going into caves sometimes lol. it's always like ok. wheres that damn frog
NO......another eventide shrine
ok, im gonna try the labyrinth now maybe?? ugh what if theres HANDS :( but i am just so sick of how big and empty hebra is
theres one of those crystal beam etc quests for this shrine (i got distracted on the way there. its fine). and usually they have parts set out so you can see what vehicle they wanted you to make. this time? the parts are set out as if to make a bike. WAY ahead of you
the problem being ofc that bikes dont carry these well. im sure they wanted me to attach the fans and stick to this little floating platform or whatever but fuck that lol
ok now wait why is this called lomei CASTLE...was that other one called castle in the sky version??? wack
oh boooo i gotta do the land part first :/
i checked and theres hands in there :(
im getting that fucking shrine! the one on top of the ice...one of the first i tried to get. i was so angry to discover that nothing i could do could get me in!! but it's finally time...
YOOOOO we got SLEDDING for this korok seed!! i lov game
lol i think calip is the one leaving these pinecones...? sounds a bit whiny and self involved, anyway
OH MY GOD I SAW THEM...I SAW THE HAND GOOP MOVE........
i thought they would be in the basement but they were on the other side of the bars from the shrine in the center of the maze!!!!!!!!!!!
i can't tell if they despawned or not IM SCARED :(
i thought i heard them but when i went to look i didnt see anything...i hope they dont respawn when i exit this shrine :(
but maybe!!! if theyre up here!!! the basement is fine actually!!!!!!!
"i ruler of owls" wtf does that mean
ok, back 2 the sky before these mf decide 2 respawn. christ. at least i have fast travel
i do really really love diving from sky to depths tho. fucking baller. esp glad to miss the hands <3
and i FUCKING. LOVE. the depths music for labyrinths. it's so FUCKING good. that lower register...mwah
phantom ganon pants HELL yeah
omg wait i can just...walk OUT of here to the depths?? maybe i'll just go get those poes...
missed the poes. went back inside instead to see if i could find the lightroot. found it on top of the maze but then i had to go the wrong way to get to the next one. so. no poes :( it was a big batch but idw walk all the way back lol
ok, snagged my second lightroot. im getting out of here lol
i should stop leaving hands on. i was gonna go get a shrine near a tower, but there's hands there, so actually i'm not doing that. it's better if i don't know!!! but sometimes i get scared and need to check :(
i went to the stable by the great tabantha bridge bc i noticed i missed a well there, and the canyon is full of green fog. i wanna look at that later but the thing i want to do next is check out satori mountain finally...i've been wanting to look for awhile!!
however unfortunately before THAT. i have to go to bed. rip!

Thirty-fifth and thirty-sixth days in Tears of the Kingdom:
Only really just went around clearing some shrines, making use of the fact that shrines on the surface are always above lightroots in the Depths. I cleared ones like the one with the shadow-casting puzzle near Kakariko, one that requires ice plates for a solution, one that needs a giant horse. . . a whole bunch of them. I'm still not close to being done with all of them, and I'm also kinda stumped in the sense that I got like. . . 144 or so? And I know that there are 152 in total, with me having no idea where the remaining ones are.

I recently got TOTK and the darkness under the ground! Aa!! Its so pretty with the monsters and the glowing dragonflies!! Do you have a favourite area in the underground? Or any boss in there that you hunt for sport?
I’ve been going on a spree with getting stalhorses but the giant frog thing. That one i hide from I can’t deal huhuh >w>,)))
THE DEPTHS ARE MY FAVE PART OF THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
um um um no depths-specific bosses yet, tho there is a lynel gauntlet i had a lot of fun in! and i really love the death mountain chasm. the whole depths are my aesthetic 100% so adding lava to it is just the icing on the cake.
i've yet to beat a frox too. i know how for the most part but i don't think i have a bulky enough build fdgdgfd. im mostly interested in poe collecting and mapping stuff out! getting all the lightroots~

I went back to the Tabantha Frontier since there was supposed to be a shrine here that I missed since I had gotten the lightroot below it. I had marked them all so I could go back and get them. It led me to an opening, the Kopeeki Drifts Cave. It was just a cave with water and large icicles that I couldn’t climb. I had to throw ice berry things to freeze the water, so I could make a trail across to the Nouda Shrine: Proving Grounds: Intermediate. I had to fight against some constructs with no armor. It took me two tries since I exploded myself and died, but I won against them all and got my equipment back. Then I got the Hearty Elixir in the chest and got my 29th Light of Blessing. I left the shrine and then looked for the glow frog and found an opening near the entrance that was further up the wall and got my 43rd Bubbul Gem (89 total).

There's a prickling taste upon the bed of his tongue, curled behind locked teeth and the wan smile he offers. He sweeps a phantom hand over the bruises mottling the hero's skin, shoulder to elbow to palm, then back again. As he works to mend what he can with his light's blessings ( no less than enough for the aches to ebb away, he hopes ), the tang — sharp and overbearing and burning — worsens.
It is so familiar a feeling. One he's faced countless times before waking to this new era.
One it appears he's condemned to continue facing, still.
"You are a lionheart in the truest sense, dear Link," Rauru intones, as warmly as this fraught, festering emotion will allow him.
What a terrible, terrible thing it is, this shame. This fury.
"But I fear it is too easy to worry for you."
     This helplessness.

"The past always has its hands around your neck, doesn't it?"
Tumblr media
This is a truth better left with the dead, the way it rots amidst his thoughts.
It used to feel enormous. Inescapable. Every piece of every memory, melded, looming like long, distorted shadows in the dusklight. Before this, he would flee from that grasp, reaching for something immutable of his own, and drown before he could touch the shoreline each time. Before this — before everything — those hands of the past were his: heavy, smothering, and stained through to the bone with cruor.
     Nowadays, they're smaller.
They feel like hands he once held. Once kissed. Once treasured, revered, loved. When the past laces its fingers around his neck, he lets them burn brands into his flesh; lets them peel back layers to tear anything he might dare to protest with apart; lets them sink their bite into his veins — so firmly that they puncture and staunch all at once. They are cold, unforgiving, and entirely deserving to dole out all that they do.
He smiles. A brittle wall: it shows, and means, nothing. Ally though Chieftain Yrelsi has proven to be, Rauru is not so heedless to think she asks this in any earnest concern for him. This polite distance is their kindness, sufficient in a war that offers and would offer them none. "Does it not make captives of us all?"

For all that things have drastically changed over the aeons, it seems the Demon King's moons are yet still the same. Tainted with his will, bloated with a promise of bloodshed — lamentably, distressingly, infuriatingly the same.
Their glare may be a cut fainter in the aftermath of a drained power, but so too is Rauru's own radiance. Below the soured moonlight, even someone like he — departed, yet here — feels the creep of that nauseating darkness far too acutely.
What must it be like, then, for someone like Link?
His arm, the one that no longer belongs just to him, stings. He feels an awakened corruption clash against the light that seeks to purge it: some searing pulse of sacrilege and sanctity.
"I apologise." He leans in closer, focus sharpening, guiding his light through Gloom-stricken veins to soothe rather than attempt to quash. He can only hope that his endeavours are fruitful, or that, at least, these throbs echoing across their point of connection are harsher as they leave their source. "If only I could do more for you..."

flowerise his hair! / accepting / @sageospirit

How softly do her fingers weave through his hair: a touch committed to memory for as long as he's lived, it feels. He remembers these hands amidst everything in the murk of times so olden he can barely recall them, and even in the bite of times so cruel he aches to forget them. It's been part of a love always carried — perhaps bore differently as they have aged and will yet age, but weighing just the same with all its breadth.
He had slipped into reverie not long after she started, and it is this reverie Rauru leaves now as there is one last shifting within his locks. His sister's touch retreats, moved now beside him to the hand he's left palm-up in waiting invitation, and he hums, opens his eyes, makes to thank her for grooming through his spread of hair, except— there's a foreign scent he hadn't noticed in his daze clinging to him.
     "Sister, what—?"
Fragrant, but not cloying. Earthy, but not rich. A plant of some sort, something blooming, and when he turns to look — sighting what he can of flowers dotting the mane that had simply been a curtain of hair — he has to laugh.
"Mineru," he lilts, a tenderness in the sound that can't be expressed without the accent of their tongue. He turns her hand over in his grasp, holds it so that he can run a thumb over her knuckles. Ah, his dear sister. "What am I to do when they wilt?"

Amidst the brightly lit lanterns and merrymaking of a celebration that isn't quite his to partake — and yet, not quite not his — he finds himself slipping away from it all for just a few breaths. While it has been an enjoyable night, witnessing Sonia and her— their peoples engaged so wondrously in their customs, it has not stopped the twinge in his heart nor the falter in his steps. In the wake of lively song and dance, memories of a long bygone past had risen too easily to touch the surface of his waters: ones he might have ached to revisit were he alone, but.
"Lady Janan," he greets, head dipping, bearing held carefully still. Not balking — any distraction her company may provide would be welcome, certainly. Of the whole their halves make, however, Sonia has simply always been the better with connecting. With offering words.
     With Janan.
Not for a lack of want or trying on Rauru's part! Or so he likes to believe. In their queen's absence, he grapples their encounter with— an overstated courtesy. "A pleasant surprise that our paths may cross here." He pauses. Clears some of the stiffness from his throat. "Are you well on this fine evening?"
( He wonders how many times this makes it now, that something like awkwardness should define their moments together. )

the past always has its hands around your neck, doesn't it?
Tumblr media
There are things he doesn't know how to tell her. Beginnings he gets lost in, endings he can't find the words to tie up. Fragments of himself he doesn't know how to release from where he's clutched them, even as their edges cut into shaking palms and draw blood from tautened fingers.
There are things, he's rediscovering, he doesn't seem to need to tell her.
At this hour, the setting sun casts a beautiful afterglow. It limns her every contour in strokes of radiant gold. This is something new they've been doing — just the two of them: sharing spaces, savouring quiets, spinning stories with worn threads — but her eye for all that goes unsaid is not a novel development.
"In a way," he says. Softly, as she had — which is certainly softer than he might have with anyone else, in any place and time else. Rauru does not have the luxury nor right to speak so lightly of these memories, monumental in their devastation, yet in the wake of those gentle tones...he does not feel so ashamed for indulging.
Their voices are followed by the thin tremolos of songbirds in a dusk chorus. The fireflies will be emerging soon. They ought to be making their way back inside, but as he turns his gaze further down from her own, landing on a hand mere inches away from his, a want gently blossoms within the hollows of his heart.
"However," he starts, chuckling, resting his hand closer. A small touch, in his littlest finger pressed against hers, "I like to believe that the future might have its own guiding hand in mine."

What has been done to you, @lunaright...?
Tumblr media
Gone were the golden antlers they once bore, signifying their fallen divinity, now replaced by horns that jutted from one side of their head. The scourge staggers — but fall not they did, puppeted by invisible strings that guided their way upwards; their footing unsteady as the world shifts under their feet. Cocking their head up and to the side ( the horns heavy enough to tilt balance ) its pupil darts afoot, attempting to focus on the face in front of them.
Even through the malice clouding their vision with crimson, they knew.
“Rauru…” his name leaves its mouth in a whisper, guttural and raspy. Though its voice is undoubtedly theirs, it merely acts and speaks for its puppeteer, stumbling closer towards the Zonai and reaching with outstretched arms, a mockery of a smile painted on their face. Gesture kind, even though its intent is not, it speaks all too softly, too kindly; a cruel lure. “It's been too long, once King of Hyrule.”
Tumblr media
It washes over him as though a spreading affliction. A traitorous, blasphemous thought. In the staggered spaces between their halting motions, as Rauru looks upon his once-ilk's taint — their decay, their corruption, their erosion — he feels it take form as a serpent writhing through his veins: accrued remnants of some ancient, seething, inexplicable wrath.
The gods are truly wretched, to continue testing him past even death.
It is instinct, as it was in life, to shatter the notion before he can dwell on it. Its pieces fall away like glass shards slitting past his fingers, but the outrage remains — fueled by a regret that hangs ever heavier from his shoulders and a heartache so profound, it has him numb for the first time since he's awakened from a sealed slumber.
They call him by his name. They reach for him with beseeching hands.
It should not make him yearn as harshly as it does.
He lurches back beyond their grasp. "Iroha," lies on his tongue, a gentle hand ready to be extended in turn, but he holds it there. He holds it there, close, like it is a fragile thing: like he daren't say it aloud for fear of losing something else — someone else — he has never been willing nor prepared to let go of.
( He holds it there, close, like he hasn't already lost them. )
"My friend," he murmurs instead. His breath does not rattle. But he imagines, if he were made of bone and blood and sinew once more, not even thralling magicks would be able to keep it steady. "I wish, dearly, I could say it is good to see you again."

As much as their appearance had at first roused such indelible curiosity, in the passing days and nights, Zelda's presence has become well-nigh commonplace. Enough for the sight of their approach — even here, where he has stolen away from the castle, and even now, when he has left being king consort behind for some spare moments — to kindle only mirth rather than honest surprise within him.
"Was it the fair lady herself who sent you my way?" he laughs, bright and fond. His periodic jaunts into the wilds aren't exactly a secret of any kept nature, but he's tried, still, to slip between the cracks of a hectic schedule when least anticipated. Though he'd been expecting Sonia today, as she's established he always should, and just a little more time to himself — trust his queen to get the better of him and his indulgences yet again.
Ah, but not all is lost!
"If you care to join me for what remains of this hour," he begins, motioning towards the space beside him. He's never been able to convince Sonia to partake in the brief mealtimes he makes of the quarries he captures in these hunts, but perhaps he will succeed here — with this blessed scion of theirs, "I won't breathe a word of it when we return."
