☕️ HELENA, the al ghuls

i love her her issues are so fun. 1 thing i love from the 1989 solo title that the other stuff doesn't seem to have is the distinction between helena bertinelli and huntress as like. not literally separate people, but like huntress lets her do things that she couldn't do (emotionally) as helena.

the al ghuls: DC created them but does not deserve them. they have so much cool potential from the villain-with-good-intentions to hero to going where other people can't do do the right thing spectrum........ but dc doesn't get it -_-

🎨 favorite color(s): Chartreuse is like my super favorite right now (it's like a bright green, on the yellower side), but I also really like cool toned purples and burnt orange. I'm very specific with my color choices haha!

📚 currently reading: I'm not that much of a reader, but I guess I've read some of the Demon Slayer manga recently, as well as some of the Ouran High School Host Club manga, and I'm also working on the Twilight Princess manga adaptation...but it's been a minute since I've picked up any of those

🎼 last song: Summer Fields from Fable, by Russell Shaw. It's very calming! I recommend anyone who's not even a Fable fan to go listen to it when you're feeling stressed

📺 last series: Currently watching Yu-Gi-Oh... It's hilarious how bad it is, but I like the art style lol...you caught me at a strange time lol because this is what I'm actively up to

🎥 last movie: We watched Wonder Women last night, and let me tell you, it still holds up and the CGI was so much better than Thor Love and Thunder

Also I’m sharing a little bit more than a line because I am nothing if not an oversharer.

What was clear to everyone was that Barbara clenched another page worth of a script in her hand, but she was too far gone to continue any speech.

favorite thing about them: the clear delineation between helena bertinelli and huntress in her head and the way that huntress represents someone who can do what helena can't not just on a crime fighting level but on a protecting herself level

least favorite thing about them: without taking into account out of universe stuff (like the way her backstory is constantly retconned ;_;) its hard for me to think of one at the moment.

favorite line: ugggg she has so mnay good lines it's hard to pick we'll go w/ the one at the end of issue 1 of her first solo b/c it so clealry sums up her motives at that time

random headcanon: I'll go with my Helena gets into teaching after she adopts James, she's looking in the bookstore for parenting books and they're right next to the education section and she picks up some of those out of curiosity and gets interested... then later when sehs taking community college classes she winds up doing a psych for general reqs + lots of the mentally ill people I know like ot take Psych XD and she follows that up with educational psych which makes her decide teaching is for her

OH I HAVE A LOT OF OPINIONS ON IT

First of all, LOVE+FEAR wasn’t a bad album and was an essential part of Marina’s journey!!!!!!! She needed the space to collaborate with other people in order to produce the commercial sound that she was looking for. Marina’s mentioned that at the time of writing L+F, she was severely depressed and wrote a couple of the happier songs because she needed to uplift herself, and so even though they may seem a bit shallow in comparison to her earlier and later works, they served a personal purpose. In the end, Marina is writing music for herself, not for an audience — we are simply lucky that she shares it with us. If forced, surface-level bops of joy were what she needed, then why try to judge it any other way? It did its job. Is it my favorite album? No. But it was Marina’s first voyage into her new identity as a woman in her 30s as opposed to a young, confused person who only sought belonging in an unfamiliar crowd.

Looking at the album itself, I definitely do think that the LOVE side is stronger than the FEAR side… The FEAR side felt very flat and immature in a way, it was as though she didn’t fully buy what she was writing?? To me, it read as though once she had gotten the strongest lines down on paper, she simply had to fill in the rest with disjointed whining 😬😅 I also think that a lot of the outtakes that could have been on the FEAR side of the album were a lot stronger and more relevant than what we saw on the album, and would have created a more rich, diverse sound (Demons & Angels, Holiday, and Water Under the Bridge especially!!!!!!). The strongest songs on the FEAR side were definitely Believe in Love, No More Suckers, and You imo. Lyrically, I think that Too Afraid has the potential to also be a really good song and I like the demo version, but I think that the sound is just so awkward that it detracts from my ability to fully enjoy the song 😔

I personally loved the candidness of the LOVE side, it was so whimsical in a way that felt confident even if she was depressed and trying to inject faux happiness in her life. It may have been artificial joy, but with every concept that was on the LOVE side, she really went full force with it! I also felt that the lyrics on the LOVE side tended to be more developed, more varied across the track, and more cohesive within each song. I was a total sucker for Orange Trees, Enjoy Your Life (one of my fav Marina songs tbh), To Be Human, and End of the Earth 😩😩😩 The love side of the album has so many good lines that I would love to just tattoo all over my body 👀

I have more thots but lemme not write a novel, jesus. Overall, even tho it’s not her best body of work, I appreciate what it did for her personally and I liked the sound of it. I was just happy to get new content after she fell off the face of the planet ajdnsnndjdk
