Back in 2021, when I first uploaded the demo for Citadel, I didn't really know what to expect. And, I have to say, this all still feels a little surreal.

But, what I know for sure is I'm so, so grateful for all of you. Thank you for playing my game, for sending in asks, for liking/reblogging my posts, and for cheering me on through medical school and now through residency. I can't emphasize enough that Citadel would not be possible without you.

Chapter 2 is out!

Chapter two is out! Exactly a year after the first, which at the very least is an amusing consistency. This update adds over 40,000 words, doubling the length of the demo!

 I’ve stared for what feels like decades at the words on the screen so I could really use some help spotting inconsistencies (especially with characters!), issues with pacing, places of confusion. I am absolutely overwhelmed with this for a first project, but I am equally determined to continue. I’m a little desperate for feedback so please tell me what you think! If you liked it, tell me why. If you didn’t, tell me what. If you gave it a shot but it failed to grab you attention let me know where and why if you can!

 I hope things start to come together strongly for this chapter and you enjoy it as much as I did writing it.

I’ve a few more in-depth thoughts about a few things I could use suggestions and help with and I’ll post those in a little while.

 In the meantime I hope you have had a happy new year and enjoy the story!

The Kingdom of Eldalin - Social Structure

The country where the story protagonist gets isekai'd is inspired by Victorian England. It has been ruled by kings and queens for centuries, with three distinct social classes - which correspond to the 3 routes for the player.

The country is very progressive in some ways. Various expressions of gender are accepted, and any two consenting adults (of a compatible social class) can get married. Feminine and masculine fashion can be worn by anyone, and professions and hobbies are likewise not limited to specific genders.

However, Eldalin holds on to old traditions in other respects. The class divide between nobility, commoners, and mages is significant.

The nobles are obsessed with family lineages, and push their children to get married before 20 years of age. Married couples are expected to have heirs, whether biological or adopted. The royal family is part of the nobility class. While regular nobles use "Sol" instead of Lord/Lady, the royals continue to use titles such as Prince/Princess, Your Highness, etc. Nobles usually run large businesses, employ many servants, and participate in high society events.

The commoners make a living by farming, craftsmanship, and other skills. Apprentices train in guilds, and then either join a business or start their own. Lately, some merchants have gotten so successful that their wealth rivals that of the noble families. This is causing envy and tension from the nobles.

The mages live, study, and work at the many temples across Eldalin. They get their magic from one of the two goddesses that watch over the world. Those who honor Goddess Igni are aligned with fire and air elements. Those who honor Goddess Azuria use water and earth magic. The mages serve as priests to help people communicate with the goddesses, but they also create the many small magitech inventions used in daily life.

Social rules strictly forbid noble-commoner relationships (although these certainly happen in secret). Nobles are most encouraged to date other nobles, but can be with a mage if the mage comes from a respected lineage. Commoners usually date other commoners, but commoner-mage relationships are allowed.

A noble can choose to relinquish their title and move into one of the other social classes. A commoner with a talent for magic can become a mage, but can never move up to nobility.

I said I'd do this a few weeks ago, but better late than never, right? Here is the official dev blog for Invicto, my Hosted Games WiP! I plot the story every day, but updates are rather few and between at the moment, so hopefully this blog can fill up some of that space.

This may sound meanspirited but I find it interesting that Cog touts itself as progressive and inclusive, but some of its players seem hostile to anything outside the cishet white norm. Ive seen this on the forum and Steam. For some reason it attracts petty, vitriolic reviews that rate a game one star for having ze pronouns or 'forced diversity'. Just look at the Google store reviews for Moonrise if you want to ruin your day.

To be fair I dont think thats entirely their fault. But I dont wonder why people have moved away from that particular space. Also its very telling that Cogs newest romance game doesnt even allow a binary trans MC despite previous games having that option.

I don't think low rating because of "forced diversity" is only a CoG issue, having seen similar comments on many itch games. These reviews might be more visible on platforms like Steam, due to its (vocal) demographic. And just because a company claims to be inclusive and progressive, doesn't mean its customers automatically are. Maybe knowing that, it could be an incentive for fan of those games to leave a rating/review? If you want to make the author's day or something, that's really a good way...

As for your last point, it sounds to me more of a coincidence more than anything? Whether they are published through the main labels or HostedGames, games can take months (sometimes even years) to be written, and coded, and playtested, and go through copyediting, and often even more months to be added to the publishing schedule (and it could still be postpone). I'm not even sure having diversity/representation is mandated for a game to be published?

(can't really comment on the Forum's vibe/ambiance, I don't really hang out there)
