#hollow knight resurrected
Note
Hollow Knight Resurrected really helped me get out of a massive writing slump when it started releasing, and has since been a huge boost of inspiration for the past couple of years. This series has been nothing but a lot of fun to watch, and I've enjoyed it alongside your analyses as well (especially the Ori ones, those are a riot).
That being said, which episode would you say you're the most proud of script-wise? And how long did you initially plan HKR to be early on? Did anything deviate from your initial ideas?
Absolutely love hearing this! I'm real glad I could make something that could inspire someone else's writing! Like, it's shocking to me! And I'm sorry for the lack of updates. My entire life kinda imploded last year and I've been trying to put it back together. But I do intend to finish this thing (I've also been learning how to animate in blender which is a huuuuuge door opener that kind of allows me to do literally anything, including a few scenes that I just had no idea how I was gonna do.) So as far as script-wise, Absolutely gotta be the Grimm special. A lot of the episodes have Charlie just walking around and most of those bits are just jokes that came to my brain while either playing to get the footage, or while I'm looking at it on a timeline. Whereas most of the dialogue bits are the ones I write. The Grimm Special, is mostly dialogue. So that *entire thing* was script, which I hadn't done before, and on top of that it was enough script to fill almost 90 minutes! There's also just a lot going on, particularly w/regaurd to generational differences and how each of the Troupe deals with Grimms Plan and how it absolutely isn't going to pan out. And it changed pretty quickly from early on just because I didn't have a hellova lot of initial ideas. Like the first time charlie mentions getting to "The Bottom" is in like the 3rd episode. I didn't think to give the boy a goal until halfway through editing that one lmao. Most everything else has gone according to plan. Biggest surprise was actually the Grimm episode because until a month before I made it I had no fuckin' clue what to do with Grimm and His Boys until I remembered a throwaway line I gave to cloth about the "Iridescent Neo-streetfighting movement" (A play on the Italian Neo-realist movement. Because all of the fighting history is just simplified film history I put new words on top of And was like "You know, I could just take that and make that Grimms Circus act... But if that's the case... well so after that the big thing the Italian Film Industry got into was Spagetti Westerns, and then a little later Giallo so... Oh fuck Rodeos and Giallo is just The Weird Bloody Fighting Grimm Does for An Audience" And went from there. But aside from that there hasn't honestly been a tone of deviation from the original ideas I'd set in place since episode 3. Mostly I've just added bits and pieces here and there. Exept for maybe a lot of Hornet's stuff. This was meant to be a quick, few episode series as a prelude to the Silksong Videos i was Bound to have been finished with by now lmaaaaaaao Some stuff in particular was this idea that Hornets deal is that she can essentially See the internal song of someone, and that was going to be, like, a huge combat thing. Similar to how Charlie keeps changing his name, Hornet would keep trying to find a different song. Bringing back the My Body Is A Cage meme, and eventually having it switch to Swimmers by Zero 7 as she realizes she found her home and is ready to move on from Hallownest. I was going to make the Silksong videos the First Series Like This I did. But it's taking it's time and so am I so I s'pose I can't complain. Swear I'm the only human being on the planet who wipes a little sweat off my brow every time we *don't* get a release date. It's like "OH THERE'S STILL TIME FOR ME TO FINISH MY THING!"

Hollow Knight Resurrected (2/?): Taking the Greenpath
A small amnesiac bug finds themselves in the fallen kingdom of Hallownest, following a calling he doesn’t understand.
(A novelization of the YouTube Series Hollow Knight Resurrected by GraveyardMedia)
The Murderer was still hunting for the bug in the red poncho. However, he had taken a break to try and gather intel. "Good evening gentlemen. Have either of you seen a girl with a red cape?"
"No I haven't!"
"Yes you have! She went that way!"
"Actually, no she went the other, opposite way from what you said."
This would have been more interesting or even useful if he wasn't talking to himself by pretending two corpses he found were actually people and capable of helping him. As it was, it was just sad.
"...Maybe I should just actually talk to real people." Yeah...It was a pretty bad look, talking to people who he didn't even kill. It's not as if ghosts were real. If they were, it would make talking to corpses viable. Ah well...the best he could hope for would be to find some other living bug in Greenpath and ask them if they'd seen the girl in the red poncho.
----
In spite of how their last conversation had ended, the Murderer was genuinely grateful to see Cornifer. Here was another living bug he could talk to! And he sold maps, which was so so useful considering Greenpath was somehow worse than the Crossroads. "Hi—"
"Well apologizing didn't work, obviously, coz what can I do about the problem?" Oh. Oh no. Cornifer and Iselda were still having issues. Oh, this was suddenly somehow worse than listening to some bug he didn't know complain about how his wife didn't like staying at home. He knew both of them now, had talked to them. He had opinions and preferences. Fuck. "Hallownest is the premium un-mapped spot. If there's a place we can make money, it's here; but she hates it here! Good going. Great advice, it really helped! All my problems are solved!" Cornifer threw up his hands in frustration.
It was taking every social bone the Murderer had to not run back the way he'd come and bury himself in leaves like the bugs around here. "Oh...I'm sorry..."
"So what do I do now?"
"Uhh," he was the worst person to ask for marital advice, "give her a raise?"
"We're married. We both get all of the money." Point proven.
"Oh yeah...would buying a map help?" That would give them money and money is always good.
"Ehh...they say money can't buy happiness, but it can bribe off unhappiness, so yeah. I think it might help a little." Cornifer shrugged.
Hell yeah. Finally acing these social situations. "Ok. I was gonna do that anyway, but here you go!" A hefty eighty geo, but most of that was from when he murdered the rich mama drifter.
"Thanks." Cornifer took the cash and handed the Murderer a map of Greenpath. Unfurling it a little, he could already tell it would help immensely with his navigation woes.
"Oh, before I forget: have you seen a girl in a red poncho flying around? Talks to herself?" He made a gesture with his claws in the shape of her mask, the way her horns curved back.
"No. Wait, actually, yeah." Okay, now Cornifer was his favorite of the two weevils. "I think they threw something at me, like caltrops?" Oh damn. Sounded exciting!
"So you didn't get a good look at em?"
"Buddy, if your first instincts when someone throws caltrops at you isn't to haul ass? You're not gonna last very long down here." Cornifer sounded put-off by the Murderer's suggestion but, really, most things down here either wanted him dead on principle or were mindless beasts. Someone hucking caltrops at his head was at least an exciting attempt at his life!
Regardless... "Fair enough. I am gonna do the opposite of that, though." Might as well set his expectations so Cornifer didn't think he was sensible or anything like that. He was a murderer! They weren't sensible at all.
"Suit yourself kid. Good luck though." Cornifer got back to his work and the Murderer turned heel and went to try and find the girl in red.

Villain: The Knights of St. Kazvarin
There's pious and selfless devotion, and then there's whatever these weirdos have going on
Riding forth from their brooding fortress-abbey to do the will of a long dead holy man, these inscrutable warriors have long been the subject of rumour and suspicion. It's not an undeserved reputation, as apart from looting tombs for ancient relics or ominously observing the goings on of the common folk these forboding knights are most often acting as the hired muscle for unscrupulous nobles who have no regard for the legality or virtue of the orders they enforce.
Far more than mercenaries with a patina of piousness, the Knights use these contracts to fund a secret and sinister endeavour that they have undertaken for centuries.
Adventure Hooks:
While delving through a dungeon the party follow a trail of slain monsters to a gravely injured knight and his thoroughly overwhelmed young squire. The boy will introduce them as Tilaen and Ser Darrik respectively and ask for their aid in tending to his master's injuries, before the dour Knight chides him for speaking on his behalf and tells the party to be about their way. Ser Darrik wants no help from "the faithless" and is willing to use the last of his strength to get violent about it. If cooler heads prevail, the party will learn that the two were after a rare manuscript hidden somewhere within the dungeon, and the offer of collaboration might be explored. If the party don't help, they'll find the squire waiting for them at the dungeon's entrance, requesting their help to bury his master and guide him back to their order's abbey. It's only after a few days of travelling together will realize that Squire Tilaen is muchabused by his sect, and that steering the boy away or outright adopting him might be the real kindness.
Acting as a stern and imposing shadow to whatever asshole noble or callous merchant the party have recently pissed off, the towering and always helmed Ser Gelceiras has "Bossfight" written all over him. However when the adventure's final confrontation looms the party find him cleaning off his massive axe, his employer's head in a bloodsoaked bag waiting to be delivered to them. "We got what we wanted from him" he rumbles as he exits, " you can have what's left. no hard feelings."
Just a new threat encroaches on the settlement, a mace wielding bruiser in burnished armour rides up and pledges to fight alongside the party in its defence. Ser Portia's skill as a fighter is sorely needed, perhaps enough to overlook whatever agenda it is that drew her to the settlement in the first place. Shortly after the final battle is fought and the dust clears, the party will realize Portia is nowhere to be seen... having escaped sometime during the aftermath after inexplicably kidnapping one of the locals.
Background: Before he was a sacred corpse, Saint Kazvarin was a necromancer of great talent, having dedicated his life to the study of thanatology and the many loopholes around death. This earned him great renown and wealth in his day, amazing the masses with seances while charging the powerful dearly for cut-rate resurrections. He amassed generous patrons and fanatical followers, only to have it all fall apart when the Raven Queen took an interest.
Kazvarin had and constructed his own bootleg afterlife, a place where his most loyal followers would rest forever in glory before being called back in time of greatest need. Atleast that was the sales pitch, in reality the "saint" had stopped just short of lichdom delving into the shadow to create a demiplane where his own soul would reside undeminished after death, sustained by the faith of his followers as the realm hollowed them out.
Such villainy inevitably created it's own downfall in the form of a young woman who's family were taken in and exploited by Kazvarin's cult. Though her name was not recorded by history, she was marked by the Duskmaven for greatness when she swore to tear down the saint who would conquer death, years later succeeding along with some allies in not only killing the necromancer but cursing him with a most ironic fate. Denying him the afterlife he had so meticulously constructed, the raven queen cursed Kazvarin with reincarnation, forcing his soul to live out a new life where it would forget all he knew and be remade.
It would have been a perfect punishment had the Saint's followers not been so fanatical. Though their organization had been shattered by their "benevolent" leader's apparent assassination, the most loyal of his inner circle poured through his research, finding the spells nessisary to seek out his soul in its new vessel. Thereafter they engaged in a grim hunt, crossing the realms to ritually sacrifice the youth their leader had grown into and pulling free his undigested soul. This is the cycle Kazvarin's followers have been following for generations, spending decades hunting for signs of their leader's return before using murder and necromancy to forcibly deincarnate him. Thereafter Kazvarin has a few months or years to act freely before he is swallowed back up by the tide of souls and the hunt begins again
Future Adventures:
Though they begin as a comparatively minor oddity, the knights become a true threat to the campaign as soon as they figure out who Kazvarin's current incarnation is and manage to wrest his soul out. Ideally this should be someone the party knows, to make it all the more tragic that they were sacrificed to bring about the villain's return.
Though it is much deminished, Kazvarin's demiplane (called the Howling Basilica) still traps the souls of those who have sworn their lives to him, acting as a vault from which he can pull rank upon rank of shadow-maddened spirits to his bidding. His most loyal retainers are allowed to keep their skills and individuality while being deprived of their will, meaning he has a backlog of highly skilled Knights just waiting for new bodies to possess no matter how many times the party defeat them on the field. What's worse is that the saint still remembers how to manipulate people with the offer of offbrand immortality, and will likely begin reaching out to powerful individuals shorty after his return.

Floating platforms in Hollow Knight are weird, lore-wise
Soooo I haven't seen anyone actually talk about this, but those things just keep *bugging* me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Why did Team Cherry put these particular platforms in the background?
Ok, there are numerous floating platforms in this game, of course, because the player needs them to traverse big spacey rooms vertically. They're not even an issue lore-wise, because their existence can be explained by them being attached to the fourth wall, which is what the player looks at the Knight through. It's basically a game construct that we are not supposed to think about as a part of the suspension of disbelief.
BUT THOSE THINGS are not attached to any wall! They're just. Floating. There. In the air. Without any support. And THEIR existence can't be explained by the game wanting to provide the player some convenience. The Knight can't interact with them, we never see anyone else use them or even acknowledge them, so they MUST be something that TC put there for lore reasons, as a part of that beautiful thing that we call environmental storytelling... Right?
That or they just put them there without really thinking about the implications that this anomaly creates. But that's a boring and very unlikely explanation, so I'm just going to discuss what that might mean for the game's lore, assuming they're put there intentionally.
So, I have several thoughts on why those platforms might exist as a part of the in-game universe.
First theory. Hallownest is literally frozen in time
Ok, so this is probably the most obvious one. Throughout the game we see some evidence of the Kingdom being literally put on hold with the intention to keep it alive indefinitely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is pretty much what is implied in the tablet in the Pale King's workshop - that PK was trying to literally pause Time itself, so that the inevitable Dawn would never Break.
Tumblr media
(Quite an interesting theme, actually - the idea of avoiding the inevitable not by trying to actually avoid letting it happen, but by delaying it by an infinite amount of time. It deserves its own post, really)
So, with Time itself being literally frozen, it's pretty safe to assume that this is exactly the reason as to why some parts of the Kingdom are literally stuck in one place, right? I mean, it's pretty much a trope to have floating rocks and buildings in a place that is stuck in some kind of time stasis. I'd say this is a pretty solid assumption, but when we actually look at some of the other parts of Hallownest we see that it's pretty lively for a place that is frozen in time. The rain is pouring, the stalactites are falling, all those machines in the Crystal Peak are still working...
Some of that stuff can actually be explained by either the Radiance's influence or the Knight's movement. The Infection is presented as the inevitable force of change that resurrects everything and moves it towards Light. The air thickens, the bugs arise from the dead, the Infection takes over the Crossroads, the Moss cultists get turned into mush, and so on. Meanwhile, other creatures possessing a Will are also capable of bringing change to this land. The Knight constantly breaks things, forces the ground to crumble beneath its feet, and overall just brings destruction to Hallownest, bringing the world closer to its natural end. It's no wonder that the stalactites start falling conveniently right as the Knight passes underneath them.
BUT there are still many things that can't be explained so easily. Like, if the Kingdom is supposed to be frozen in time, then why is the rain still pouring? Why is the Wyrm's ash still falling at the Kingdom's Edge? Why is the sand still falling from the ceiling? Why do larger things seem to be fixed in place, while smaller things are seemingly unaffected by the Kingdom's stasis?
That and the fact that at no point we see these floating platforms being acknowledged by the game's lore in any way other than those two places makes me think that this theory is probably incorrect, unlike the next one.
Second theory. Those two particular places are just that special.
The only two places where we actually see floating platforms being a part of the background (if I'm not missing any) are located near some of the most mysterious places in the whole game.
First, we have the ones that are located near the Colosseum of Fools. To be honest, even the interactable platforms there just seem useless, as some of them don't even protect us from the Bellflies. They all look like some kind of decoration (alongside with those strange thin pillars with circles on top of each) leading us along the road towards the corpse of a huge beast which the Colosseum is located inside. What even is this creature? Is it a higher being? Is it a Wyrm (don't mossbag me, he's wrong about those things being its claws because we see a third one in the foreground lying aside from the main structure, detached from the body)? Is the Lord Fool its reincarnation? Is it connected to the Ancient Civilization? How are there so many warriors there? Why does it still thrive after everything that happened to Hallownest? There are so many questions about that place left unanswered that I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the magic of the Colosseum actually affects time and/or space around it, making it possible for the floating platforms to exist.
Second (and this is the most important one), we have the platforms that are located inside and outside the Hive. As far as I know, this is the only place in the whole game that has this many floating platforms located in the background.
Tumblr media
This basically confirms that this is absolutely NOT a coincidence and is a part of the intentional in-game lore. The whole place is floating!
The Hive seems to be in its own kind of stasis, probably due to its isolation. Vespa says that going against nature is a folly, so this anomaly is probably something... natural.
And you know where else floating things are a natural occurrence?
Tumblr media
The Dream Realm.
So, the Hive and the Dream Realm are both places that are tied to the Light, which is a kind of force or energy that can alter reality and even create new realities, which are not necessarily bound by the usual laws of space and time. The Hive is not located in the Dream Realm, and it's safe to say that it's not some kind of in-between-the-worlds situation like with the Lifeblood Core, so the stuff that's going on there is less crazy than what we see in the Dream Realm, but it is also the only material place that is connected so heavily to the Light, so it is safe to assume that the anomaly that lets the platforms float is directly connected to that mysterious force.
The only thing that I can't understand is how the Light in those places connects to the Colosseum of Fools. It's not a well-lit area, and even inside the arena the only source of light is just regular fire. Could it be that this mysterious force is not defined by the Light itself, but by something more... incomprehensible?
I wonder what that force even is. The Radiance is definitely not the only source of it, and we know we're gonna see some really shiny stuff in Silksong. I personally hope for more platform lore.

Hey Kooks! What's your favorite video game? And how is your Baldur's Gate gameplay going?
Hello, Anon :)
Top five favorite video games would probably be (in no particular order):
Planescape: Torment
Disco Elysium
Pathologic 2
Fallout 2
Dishonored 2
In recent years I also super enjoyed Dredge, Inscryption, Darkwood, The Darkest Dungeon, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Talos Principle, The Night in the Woods, Kentucky Route Zero, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Loop Hero...
Love me some Stardew Valley or Kingdom Two Crowns from time to time too.
And as for Baldur's Gate 3: I am currently super slowly going through good Durge Tactician run with my boy Vic.
Tumblr media
Super slowly because the school year is back in full spin so i have little time to play. I'm a bit disappointed with the Tactician difficulty, I expected it to be more challenging, but otherwise it's a pleasure to play, as always. Just finished the first map and paused on my way to the creche, when Astarion finally decided to bite Vic (took him a long time to get there this game). Vic failed all his saves and died, but we got resurrected and got to punch the thirsty vampire without losing any approval so now we're good :)

it's been talked to death about the way that from soft games handle their telling of lore & in particular the use of item descriptions to do so. that in particular has been super interesting to me from the beginning, and so i decided that i was going to do a lil list of my three personal favorite lore twists/implications that come from item descriptions
3. Nomadic Merchant's Set - Elden Ring
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the lore twist: mentions of the mysterious frenzied flame show up throughout the entire game in various ways, namely in incantations & areas/enemies that have been consumed by the frenzied flame. it's portrayed as an incredibly powerful but maddening thing, and its origins are mainly left a mystery
also throughout the game there are various nomadic merchants who assist you by offering different kinds of items, as well as some offering little bits of lore & quest hints. they're portrayed as very kind and helpful, and are most notably found by following the sound of a beautiful, somber tune that they all seem to play
eventually, exploring deep, deep underneath the capital of the Lands Between will find you discovering what is in my opinion the most harrowing sight in the entire game - piles and piles of corpses, all in different poses of absolute agony and horror. and as you enter, you hear a familiar, now haunting tune as you find the last few remaining merchants still remaining deep below
you finally come across their armor set at the very bottom of a deep chasm, where the harrowing truth of both why so little of these merchants remain, and also the origins of the frenzied flame
2. Talisman of Beasts - Demon's Souls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the lore twist: would just like to say that anyone who's been a fan of these games for a while knew this one had to be here - it's truly THE original big one when it came to Lore Twists through item descriptions
throughout demon's souls there's mentions of both the Old One and an unnamed God. the Old One is an ancient demon that is the progenitor of all other demons throughout the game and the source of the deep colorless fog that is engulfing the world. this Old One can not be killed - it can merely be lulled back to sleep, and is stirred by use of soul magics, which it is also the source of
the unnamed God, on the other hand, is the source of miracles - divine magic as opposed to soul magic. servants of this God use their miracles to help fight against demons, and view miracles as heavenly acts as opposed to the demonic acts of soul magic, with one clearly good & the other clearly evil
however, this talisman ultimately reveals that the Old One and God are in fact one and the same, and that both soul magic and miracles ultimately come from the exact same source
1. Ringed Knight Set - Dark Souls 3: The Ringed City
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the lore twist: disclaimer with this one in that this one is a lot more of a Personal Interpretation & a lot less concretely canon than the other two on this list, but it's my personal favorite of the lot for reasons that i will explain and i simply had to have it
a very big part of the lore of dark souls has to deal with the curse of undeath, with those cursed with it unable to truly die and steadily becoming hollow shells of themselves as they are repeatedly resurrected. this concept of undeath is explored in various different ways throughout the entire series, and the protagonist of each game is some form of undead. all undead are branded with what is known as the Darksign - a burning red circle
the origins of the curse of undeath are left vague throughout most of the three games, though it is claimed that it was created when Gwyn, leader of the Gods that ruled in the Age of Fire, refused to relinquish said Age of Fire to make way for the Age of Dark, an age ruled by men instead of the gods. the full extend of how it was created or how it is transmitted remained a mystery, and at least for me it very much seemed like the curse happened accidentally, all part of Gwyn's desperate attempts to keep going what he felt was right
that is, until, we finally enter the Ringed City - the second DLC for dark souls 3, and the final bit of content for the entire dark souls trilogy. throughout the series the subject of Man and their relation to both the Dark and a thing known as the Abyss are explored a lot, and in the Ringed City it is explored even more, a lot of which is very much meant to be left to interpretation so i won't comment on it much, but amongst other things found in the Ringed City are various enemies marked with a terribly familiar burning red circle
upon finding the armor of the knights of the city, the truth becomes revealed - early man found their own smidgens of life within the Abyss, and the gods fearing this decided to place a brand upon the armor of those men. a brand eerily familiar to that of the darksign, what would later become the signature sign of one cursed with undeath
the implication thus, at least to me, becomes that the curse of undeath was willingly created by the Gods in order to prevent mankind from finding their own forms of life, to prevent them from rising to the same status as the gods who ruled over them. what once seemed like an accidental thing now was revealed to be purposely done, and the sheer weight of that combined with this revelation and answer coming at the very end of the series after the question being established from the very beginning is why it is my personal favorite item lore twists

Episode 3, Finding some footing!
youtube
So this is where I started to find where I stood in the series. The last couple of posts was just me going scene by scene describing things, this one I want to focus in on two things. Starting a Lore Bible, and Action Scenes.
So between ep 2 and 3 I took a trip to my grandmas which is always good to get the creative juices flowing. And I knew the Mantis Lords were coming up, and I thought "Mantises are kinda tied in to a lot of places, what with the Trator Lord, the breakup between the tribes, and the pale mourner quest. It seems like there's a lot of fertile ground for lore expansion there!" So I started expanding The Mantis stuff. Then I kept going. I'd established that Fighting History, was going to be a simplified version off Film History I'd already name dropped Zells and Hilltop, during the hornet fight. How much farther can I go with that? And maybe I should give the exposition to Sly.
The Concept I had for Quirrel was based on a Blade Runner 2049 reference I used him to make in the old series... but what if I Kept Expanding Outward.
And eventually, it was time to make this episode. Here is where I had an idea of where to go after this. I'd been playing it by ear up until this point, with a few exceptions. I knew how I was going to do some story beats, like Myla and The Ending. But now I knew what direction I was taking everything else. Hollow Knights lore is veeery open to interpretation. And If I was going to make a narrative series out of it. I needed to interpret. So I decided to go hard on that. I'd say I threw off my shackles and made my own cannon, but Hollow Knight's cannon is a tapestry filled with bits torn out on purpose. So I just filled them in. And while filling them in I realized how wide the canvas was. So I just kept going. And I'm still going!
And ultimately, going that direction I think is the best way to go. Everyone watching the series probably know how the story goes. And it's going to go mostly the same way. But it sure feels a lot different when you've got a lot more going on. And I still got a lot of surprises up my sleeve!
Now let's talk about the fight scenes. So something I didn't talk about during the Episode 2 behind the scenes is that I stopped rendering these videos in 60fps. The reason I did that is because, with the dynamic cutting, the Hornet Fight Scene just looked *way worse* in 60FPS. That framerate is really good when you have to watch out for Hornet's attacks, and therefor are focusing on a mostly static screen where the movement is done by the character and not the camera.
But when every action gets it's own cut, And the camera AND the characters are moving 60FPS can get visually overwhelming. You don't need to actively interact with A Youtube Video. The editing and camera movement does that for you! And if you just have a static screen of the characters moving it looses a majority of the 'oomph' quick cuts, zooms, and framing can give you. It's incredibly boring!
So I render these in 30FPS exclusively now.
But the reason I bring that up is that I noticed something else in the Hornet Fight It's very vertical, and Academy Ratio Widescreen looks much better than 16:9.
So i played around in the hornet fight a little, and eventually decided against going with that. Because hornet did do a lot of jumping in the air and having the full 16:9 rectangle gave me a lot more vertical room.
But I didn't need that with the Moss guards.
So the day before it needed to be released, I looked at it, and it felt like half an episode. There wasn't really a conclusion to it. 'cus at that point it just had the moss guard fight on the bridge and "Still Counts!" was all the training out lil guy did the whole episode.
So I thought "Why don't I just put, like, another fight scene in there where he learns something?"
So I did that. Then I went back to my Widescreen idea.
And I thought to myself "Okay, pretentious much? You're just gonna change the aspect ratio purely for the fight scene on your Hollow Knight Youtube Video?" Everything Everywhere All At Once hadn't come out yet, you see.
So I thought "Well okay, If I'm gonna do that. I think I need another reason for it to be there other than It Looks Better This Way" Which was wrong, of course, that's always a good enough reason. but I thought "If he's training, maybe those are the margins the character writes his notes in. He can put boss attack strategies in there!"
And, while it's been a pain in the ass and a helova lot of work. It's honestly one of the best ideas I had for the series! And I made it 3 hours before my final render lol. Sometimes you give yourself needless barriers, but sometimes a clever solution to something that isn't a problem, turns it into a new cool thing. Not always. Probably not usually. But sometimes!

i have done pretty much everything i want to do for the foreseeable future in ds1 other than this. i love the ocs i've created for it but it is time to move on. but i also am fond of their builds and their runs so here they are (some of which i've posted actual info about, others no)
AKARI – A fledgling pyromancer from the Great Swamp whose thirst for knowledge and power only grew when she found herself in Lordran. On her journey as the Chosen Undead, she fanatically sought out all manner of pyromancy to master all that was possible, even the black flame of the abyss. She took Queelag's soul, forging it into a chaos demon's pincer to wield, shrouding herself in the anonymity of hollow thieves. Upon being confronted with the illusion of Anor Londo, she realized the age of fire was ending and wanted to secure her own position in the world to come. Akari slaughtered her past mentors with the same pyromancies they taught her, laid waste to the Bed of Chaos and burned Lord Gwyn with her flames, stronger than the cinders he had become. She did not link the fire. Instead, she took the last of the flame and stomped out the ashes. Akari walked into the Age of the Dark knowing she alone held the power of fire and that the world would depend on her to light the way.
ANATOLI – A knight of the Princess Guard who left Anor Londo to find his sister Aylinfaris after she was banished from the Darkmoon Covenant. Along his journey as the Chosen Undead, Anatoli evolved from wielding his honorable rapier and shining armor to the dingy garb of the firekeeper who died on his watch and Knight Orienstein's armor, armed with Lord Blade Ciaran's golden tracer. Anatoli sought out to rescue and help any he could; he felt particular affection for Reah of Thorolund. When he realized Gwynevere was only an illusion, his faith in Anor Londo and the Age of Fire was shaken. Upon defeating the Kings of New Londo he found that Reah had died and that the only surviving member of her retinue Petrus killed her. Enraged by this, he sought revenge, killed Petrus, and carried Reah's ivory talisman to channel his miracles. When Anatoli faced Lord Gwyn and prevailed, he chose not to link the fire, instead opting to lead humanity into the Age of Dark as a guiding light, with the means to protect and heal humanity.
AYLINFARIS – A knight of the Darkmoon Covenant who was disgraced after she showed mercy to a quarry and banished from Anor Londo. On her journey she sought to redeem herself and wielded a bastard's sword and parrying dagger, shrouding herself in dark scorched robes. She viewed her travels as a show of penance and fully devoted herself to being the chosen undead, to save Anor Londo, and relink the fire. When she and her brother reunited, she realized their journeys had changed them. While he grew disillusioned, her fervor and desire for the life she knew deepened. Upon reaching the great city again, she was taken back into the service of the Darkmoons. She dutifully collected the Lord Souls and burned them in the Lord Vessel without hesitation and when she defeated Lord Gwyn, she did as she sought out to do and returned order to the Age of Fire.
CELESTINE – A young noble from Vinheim who followed the Way of White. Her penchant for sorcery and curiosity led her to pursue knowledge from any source, though she also wielded the Moonlight Butterfly's Horn and adorned her brow with the Crown of Dusk. She freed Big Hat Logan and learned from him, only to watch his descent into madness and slew Seath The Scaleless, only to sped time within the Crystal Caves, studying the magic and potential they hold. Celestine defeated Lord Gwyn, fulfilling her duty as the Chosen Undead and returning Lordran to the Age of Fire.
DUANA – A commoner from Izalith who lost her family when it sank, consumed by chaos. When she emerged from the Undead Asylum she swore herself to the Lord of the Dead in hopes she could resurrect them. She wielded a dagger, cut from the tail of a halfbreed dragon and the Gravelord's miracles in tandem on her journey. Her hope in the world diminished as she knew, no matter what he promised, Nito could not bring her family back to her. Duana defeated those who held the Lord Souls and faced Lord Gwyn. After defeating him, she entered the Age of Dark to face what remained alone.
EVREN – A blacksmith from the Great Swamp who befriended Andre the Blacksmith and brought him embers, as well as stumbling upon the ancient Path of the Dragon, and the majesty of the Ancient Dragon in Ash Lake. During his journey, he bore the weapons of mighty dragons he conquered, and defeated Gwyn with the Dragon's Tooth and linked the flame, extending the Age of Fire.
LUGH – A prisoner of New Londo, who watched from his cell as it sank. After years of solitude, Lugh broke free and devoted himself to the Darkwraiths and the coming of a new age. He slew any competition including Solaire of Astoria and Siegmeyer of Catarina and came to wield the Demon Spear and the armor of his peers and of the Black Knights he conquered. Lugh relished in killing Gwyn and dooming the world to the Age of Dark.
LYKORIS – A hunter of the forests of Lordran who emerged when the abyss began to creep closer once more. She sought to discover what had happened and what the great hero Artorias had missed, following in his footsteps as she walked the path of the Chosen Undead, wielding a jagged ghost blade. After being shunted back to the past, she found that what she knew was a lie. After defeating Artorias and Manus, halting the spread of the Abyss, Lykoris bore Artorias's corrupted greatsword and took his place to stave off the abyss. She did not link the flame. Years later, she emerged from the abyss, unkindled and covered in ash into a future unknown to her, where once again the fire is fading.
NOX – An archer of skill only matched by Pharis until they defeated her and took her fabled black bow as their own. Nox embarked on the quest of the Chosen Undead, not due to any noble purpose, but to test their skill with the bow. They defeated every foe upon their way and began the Age of Dark.
SAMSON – A Warrior of Sunlight from Astoria, brother in arms to Solaire. While Solaire sought the sun, Samson pursued the path of the Chosen Undead, aiding those who he could and illuminating the way with bolts of lightning and his giant's halberd. Much to his dismay, he could not save Solaire from the madness that came in Izalith with a chaos bug upon his face. Samson continued his journey alone, defeated the weary Gwyn, and extended the Age of Fire.
VESPER – A firekeeper who wielded pyromancies and miracles in tandem, who took matters into her own hands to protect the flame. Though dissuaded by her peers and by seemingly fate itself, Vesper collected the fragments of the Lord Souls and relinked the flame, rekindling the Age of Fire.

SUMMARY
Three women find their lives deeply entangled at the hands of an eight hundred year old High Priest as He embarks on what may be an impossible task. Dakota Locke is an aspiring historian with little money and nothing to her name. When her guardian takes her abuse too far, Dakota flees, forsaking the scant chance she has at her dreams. Then she meets a strange woman in the woods who doesn't speak and her life changes forever. Maka Willards is a god. She knows this, no matter what the Scholars of the Lost say. Despite the curse binding her powers, she knows its hold is slipping. After a harrowing event shakes the cathedral she calls home, she abandons it all to find her High Priest herself and take her place among a new era of Gods. The Scholars of the Lost devoutly follow their High Priest as he resurrects the gods, no matter the cost. Unbeknownst to everyone else, they also aim to sway Him to their own shadowed goals. No one knows these truths better than Katalin Basurto. Having trained for years to be the next Scribe, she may finally have her chance when the last Scribe meets his untimely end. For years, she's suffered under the influence of the Scholars. She won't let anyone stand in her way now.

I write a bunch of human x HKCharacter Fics, and I’m curious as to what ideas others either use or enjoy. Or what people find is the most believable. For this, I generally consider HK characters to be roughly person sized (THK being ~7 foot sorta scale)
Elaborations of the options:
Space Ship Crash Landing: Pretty self explanatory. A Sci-fi set up, with the HK world being an exoplanet. Humans develop the technology to travel through the galaxy/universe and crashes onto the HK planet Subnautica style. Sometimes ignores canon of all of Hallownest being underground.
Cryosleep/Other Stasis: Another Sci-fi set up, this time with the HK world actually being a distant future Earth. Humanity used advanced tech to go to sleep for some reason, and either wake up themselves to find the world in a state they hadn’t anticipated, or they get found and woken up by characters. The existence of magic clashes heavily with this idea.
Magic Displacement: The human/humans just suddenly find themselves on a different world for unknown, potentially never explained, reasons. Could be the work of a God. Could just be Plot Magic. The author might not even know. Allows for a large amount of freedom the explore humans in Hallownest at the severe cost of believability (unless it’s done with skill.) Can be ambiguous on if the HK world is different from the human one. Could even be a different magic dimension.
Summoning: Similar to above, but the human/humans are summoned via magic by a means that’s at least a little explained, usually a ritual of some sort.
Magic Resurrection/Genetic Reconstruction: HK world used to be the earth, and humans used to live on it in the distant past. But they’ve been extinct for a long time, only they’re ruins and corpses remain. Someone decides to try to Jurassic Park them, with fancy bug magic.
Void: The human/humans are just yoinked through space and potentially time by the Void. Either intentionally or randomly. It’s never elaborated upon on how the void has done this. It’s the Void, that’s like the HK community’s Swiss army goop. It can do whatever the author needs it to do, don’t ask questions.
Humans already exist: The HK world exists in either a magically hidden bubble space on the surface, or deep underground where it hasn’t been discovered yet. The existence of magic again hinders the believability.
Jumangi-d into the game: Allows for the human/humans to have a previously existing knowledge of the lore/main events. Allows for some time travel fix-it esqe shenanigans (and the angst that comes with consequences of making those changes.) Method of spontaneous digitalization/displacement is usually not explained. Similar to magic displacement above, could even work in tandem. Allows humans to flex on the Radiance for technically being her god. Could take a step further and give the human access to “modding” or “debug” abilities to the world itself.

You have such great insights on Arya so I’m curious on how you think Gendry and her would reunite (hopefully in twow lol) I’d imagine it would be in the riverlands with the brotherhood but I don’t know how each would react to one another or how it might play out
Haha thank you so much. If you want to take a look, I drew this. Ok, let's speculate:
We don't yet know what will prompt Arya to return to Westeros, but whatever the cause, I believe she will try to return North. But she won't be able to find a ship that goes directly there because: "It would make no difference if you could, child. The North has nothing for us. Ice and war and pirates.” And none of those problems are going to be resolved anytime soon, so she might choose to take a ship that takes her further south to the Riverlands forcing her to retrace her steps.
Having landed near Saltpans the obvious route is to start traveling north following the course of the river to the Crossroads Inn and then take the King's Road from there. All roads lead to this inn, it's the easiest place for a traveler to find, and there is Gendry. I think he may be the first person she knows to meet upon her return to Westeros.
I would love if Gendry was the first friend to call her name in ages, it would be a very emotional scene. After all, he was the last person on page to address Arya by name (ASOS - Arya IV) before she left for Braavos. Next up is that heartbreaking scene where Arya hears someone screaming her name in the rain before being kidnapped by the Hound (ASOS-Arya VIII). She thinks it might be Harwin or Gendry, but “the thunder drowned them out as it rolled across the hills, half a heartbeat behind the lightning” says Gendry to me.
Arya's reaction is the hardest to predict. It really depends on how the first chapters of TWOW go. I think a more mature Arya, while feeling hurt by his decision to stay with the Brotherhood, is fully able to understand his need for self-determination. She basically had no problem understanding Hot Pie's decision and she doesn't hate Jon for leaving her to join another brotherhood. She's just overwhelmed because the people she loves always seem to leave or die on her.
Gendry… in AFFC he seemed ready to smash the Hound skull, so I would say that his reaction will be first of all one of relief and happiness to see her literally come back from the Underworld.
I would like it if Lady Stoneheart were the first topic of discussion. Maybe Arya asking why he's here with childrens and not out there playing the stupid knight role with the Brotherhood and him trying to explain about the lady.
Arya doesn't understand, then she remembers that strange wolf dream she had years ago and realizes the role she played in the resurrection of her mother. It would be a chapter full of mixed feelings: the happiness of being able to embrace her mother again and the sense of guilt of having contributed to making her this way.
Then... Arya doesn't know the way to the Hollow Hill, but Gendry does.

If we are specifically talking about fics about Hollow some I have tried at various points,
LONG
White and Gray - Where Hollow gets isekaied into the past, angst, pain, family drama ensue. Hollow is angry, boiling and very emotionally vulnerable. They do slowly get better. Kind of. Ongoing. I would recommend it, if you like fix it fics where not everything is perfect (few things are).
Lost Kin - if you like slow paced attempt at caretaking except that for the most part of the fic Hornet is not aware that she is taking care of a person and not automaton. Things get better but like... uh. Also can get graphical. Also takes place in the alternative take on the Hollow Knight ending so the Knight is not doing well either but hush it is implied. Ongoing. (pretty great for how amazing the povs are)
Drained of Light - about gang taking care of Hollow in the aftermath of the modified Godhome ending, much less angsty, provides a lot of homebrew and generally more on humorous side (but still horrible trauma and dissociation on Hollow's part) Also can get graphical. Has shipping. Knight/Quirrel Ongoing
Take Two - timelines do a thing and it causes... some effects. The sealing is canceled last moment and so the Pale King is now stuck with needing to quickly figure out a new solution while also navigating the fact he has had a kid he had neglected for their entire life for better good of the kingdom. They must loathe his presence after everything (they don't). ALso ongoing, slow updates. Other important characters are Hornet and the Knight themselves (also has some comedic value)
Make Yourself Deserving of a Second Chance - very very slow paced pov of Pale King having miserable time after he gets resurrected after main events of the game, presumably by his dead kids. He is weak, sad and really wants to make things better but also wants to die. Contains shipping between Grimm/Pale King. Pretty decent but the plot is very slow so it didn't really manage to get far yet with its 20+ chapters. Be prepared.
There are also a number of short ones, but I am yet to compile a list of those I took note of (as I have little time to read fics, alas).
oooooh these sound interesting!! maybe ill give em a shot!
