I'm an idiot and completely forgot that the only thing I was waiting on for a Maeglin cosplay was a longsword, which... I've now had for a month ^^;

SO threw together a quick costest for the lad today. Mostly pleased, though there are a few things I want to adjust; and I need to figure out if the reason his eyeliner/eyeshadow color isn't showing up properly is because it's too dark or because of this particular lighting/phone camera setup (I decided on dark blue for him, but it's not showing here the way it is in person).

Also, with thin clothing like this, compression bra/binding doesn't cut it for me, and I wear my silicone torso to change up how the fabric drapes on me -- so I wore it today, to make sure my clothes still fit with it on (as these are just my daily clothes lmao). Aaand, since I already went to the trouble of wearing it (it is a huge pain in the ass to take on/off), I figured might as well take some fun photos too -- enjoy, under the cut! XD

With Utsukushii Kare: Eternal becoming available on streaming in Japan and rumors of international streaming distribution on the horizon, I thought this might be a good time to do a roundup post of all of my meta writing on the series so far. There's quite a bit of it. Between the complexity of the psychological themes in this series and my capacity for hyperfocus, I ended up with a lot to say.

In case it doesn't go without saying, this post is subject to change as I continue to post on this topic.

The psychological paradoxes of Utsukushii Kare

This is a series of posts (the current plan is to write three installments) about what it says on the tin: paradoxical psychological dynamics in Utsukushii Kare. These are things about the characters that may seem contradictory at first but can be accounted for by digging deeper into some psychological concepts. These posts are focused on the series (both seasons) but will draw from the movie and from the novel and related stories when they illustrate points about the series.

Part 1: Covert grandiosity and finding status through idealization - A pretty deep dive into 1) the subtle ways Hira shows that while his self-image can be highly negative in some ways, in other respects he feels superior to others and 2) how by elevating Kiyoi’s status and humbling himself in comparison, Hira attains a different kind of status.

This episode is told largely from Kiyoi's POV and it very much warns us of how the story is going to develop. Lots of little seeds are planted throughout the episode.

For this season I decided to translate the opening & ending credits as well, because they're written from Hira's (OP) and Kiyoi's (ED) perspectives and I feel like they add a good layer to the story!

New to My Beautiful Man after someone on here was reblogging about it a few days ago (thanks btw). When I say new I mean I'm writing this part way through ep3.

I mostly write this to get a thought out of my head. Hira has one of the weirdest sexual codings I've seen in years. His hero worship/ lust/ stalking at the bare minimum attraction to Kiyoi has nothing to do with gender. Yes, he thinks Kiyoi is beautiful, and he is, but he doesn't even see his attitude or behaviours. He's kinda coded as a grey-ace but in a way that so few write. As a trope normally it's a way to justify non-wandering eyes in a couple but Hira means it. At this point, he is not attracted to male or female only Kiyoi

As a random aside I've already read a post I want to recommend by @respectthepetty My Beautiful (Colorful) Man despite the spoilers, my fault for playing in tumblr tags, it has made me respect and pay attention to the costuming in a way that I haven't for a show in years.

I want to take just a quick second to talk about the Wat x Sani ship in The Eclipse and Our Skyy 2: The Eclipse, which prompted a little conversation among drama friends today. (As well, thanks to the dear @aprilblossomgirl for the lovely reblog and tags partly on this topic, too.)

The teacher/student ship is obviously a controversial one, and citing from my conversation with drama friends earlier today, the boss/employee ship may also fall into this controversial category as well.

WHY? What are some factors that get people jibbly about these kinds of ships?

Clearly, the power dynamic between the dyads: with implied or explicit hierarchy, it may be assumed that the uke in these situations may be heavily influenced by the power dynamic and may feel a NEED to participate in the dyad.

There may also be age bias against a woman, if the dyad is het and the woman is either older and/or a seme. 

There may also be what I call implicit or explicit compassion bias against a uke. This is what I want to really unwind in this post.

Do we assume that because Wat is younger than Sani, that Wat should be “protected” from the potential ship, because Sani is older and a teacher? 

I think I want to be careful of making assumptions there. WHY? Because I think Golf CLEARLY knows what they’re doing here.

I’d be jibbly of this ship IF Sani is demonstrating behavioral tics that are typical of a worrisome power dynamic, such as grooming and/or gaslighting. 

That didn’t happen in The Eclipse: The Series or OS2. Sani is clearly a mentor and friend in this situation. Sani is also closer in age to Wat than we might assume because, remember, she was just starting at Suppalo when the series started. So she might have a better read on what the boys are going through, emotionally, than the older teachers.

Besides Sani, there’s Wat. More implicit in the series, and explicit in OS2: Wat is nostalgic for his time spent with Sani, and how they’ll keep in touch after he graduates.

Now before I jump into my main bias point, I just want to say that I *think* Wat and Sani’s movie bit will indicate that Sani will friend zone Wat -- that’s how I *think* this’ll end. But, to my main bias point:

Last year, when I wrote about Extraordinary Attorney Woo and Utsukushii Kare: Season 1, I noted that Woo Young Woo and Hira are two potential subjects of implicit compassion bias. We as viewers may have unknown sympathy or compassion for Young Woo and Hira -- that may then PREVENT US from BELIEVING that they can make decisions on their own, with their own agency. 

Therapists are trained to be aware of this compassion bias. It’s a POWER THING on OUR end as therapists/parents/drama viewers. We might feel SO protective of our simps that we’ve CONVINCED ourselves that they NEED to be protected.

That’s no good. Young Woo was perfectly capable of making all her own decisions and didn’t need our sympathy/compassion. (Jun Ho knew this, and that’s why I think he was so confident in going after her.) Hira may not have had full social awareness for how much Kiyoi loved him, but Hira didn’t need our protection and sympathy. Yes, Hira was bullied, but he could also bully back. 

So, to Wat. My man. He knows what he’s doing. He’s calling Sani, telling her his feelings. He’s either an adult or on the cusp of being an adult.

If I’m Wat’s counselor -- or HIS MOTHER, gasp -- I’d wanna know this entire deal. (Okay, as his mom, I’m lookin’ at Sani CLOSELY, but not making a blanket judgment.) I see Sani NOT grooming or gaslighting Wat. I see Sani listening to Wat. I see Sani supporting Wat in his dreams as a filmmaker and giving him advice and guidance.

And I’m letting Wat unwind this. Again: Golf knows what they’re doing. Wat’s an adult. The boys have become adults. Young adults, sure, but they’re adults, who deserve to operate under their own agency.

One thing that I am loving about my road trip through the old Thai BLs -- especially in watching Make It Right right now -- is that these filmmakers are ALLOWING YOUNG ADULTS to young adult. Teenagers have sex. (Oh, oh yes they do, in Make It Right, oh yes.) And young adults may fall in love with older adults! It certainly happens. Young adults may even have their first sexual experiences with older adults.

I like that people like Golf and New Siwaj are letting this happen for their characters, because I do believe it reflects reality, and it challenges some assumed characteristics of dyads that many viewers may feel jibbly about and may not want to see in their art.

These filmmakers are not afraid of the jibbly stuff. Wat doesn’t need our protection. Sani is not behaving in a way that’s concerning. I think she’s being presented as perfectly reasonable and supportive of Wat. Nothing’s happened to indicate that she’s behaving problematically towards Wat. If Wat wants to crush, let’s let him crush, because it’s a safe environment for him to learn about himself. And even if they get together (again, I’m not calling that by what I saw in episode 1 today), I’ll be fine with it, because I think Sani is behaving perfectly reasonably, and I’m aware that I don’t want to have an age bias against her for being an older member of this dyad. (And Wat’s the seme here, btw, clearly.)

That’s my two cents on this ship. I’m supportive of it. Let’s see if it goes tomorrow, and to where.

I mean most people like a good act of affection, right? Honestly I don't think they're too picky as long as it's sincere. They do like a good cuddle, platonic or romantic. I imagine they cuddle Karlach more than they cuddle Astarion for most of the game lmao. And yes he gets upset about it 😔 Idk for some reason I think tieflings have a sort of unspoken camaraderie/familiarity with each other, so a lot of their gestures of affection involve tails and horns. So wrapping their tail around people, forehead-bonking, etc.

What's something your OC counts as unforgivable?

Ooh this is a tough one 🤔 I dunno if they'd consider much of anything as their job to "forgive" if that makes sense? They think more in terms of the amount of damage caused, and whether it'll happen again. Like if you put some random farmer who killed his wife's lover in a jealous rage and isn't sorry, but who has otherwise no history of violence and doesn't intend to kill again, and someone like the Dark Urge, who is perhaps repentant and doesn't want to kill again but might just because they're forced to and have like several massacres under their belt, Hira will have way more sympathy for Durge, but they will kill them without hesitation if forced to pick. They don't care much for ethics and morality and redemption and whatnot, but more like "how much more hurt and damage will you cause, and is it enough for me personally to intervene" and "if you hurt a lot of people before, what will you do to balance that out."

So in a sense they do concern themself with redemption? But from a practical standpoint, I guess.

But they're also not above just killing randos for annoying them. Like they make a calculation of "how much good am I removing from the world by wasting this bozo". Like guys like Aradin haven't wronged them personally but he keeps saying racist shit and being kind of a nuisance so if he gives them enough "reason" they'll be like oops he fell off a cliff idk lol.

Generally they will have little mercy spared for people who hurt children in particular, though. That's one of those things where they have basically no tolerance whatsoever. Especially from parents. They are not thrilled with Mayrina, let's just say.

Does your OC have any contradictory interests or traits to the first perception people have of them? How do they surprise people?

I think the fact that they're strictly monogamous and actually very devoted once in a relationship would probably surprise a lot of people. And the fact that they're not nearly as sexual as they pretend to be. A lot of their stereotypical bard-ness is basically there to foster the Faerûnian equivalent of parasocial relationships. If they pretend to be single, approachable, sexually available, they get more tips, that sorta deal.

Like when they tell Astarion they're ok with never having sex again if he doesn't want to, he doesn't believe them, he thinks it's a joke. So they have to eventually reiterate that no, genuinely, if you don't want to have sex ever, that's fine, I might not even miss it. They're like "We're both sexed up enough to last other people many lifetimes. If being with you means going without, it's a mindlessly easy trade."

On a different note, they once let out a scream of rage so intense it made Karlach go "hey uh ... what was that about" and they were like "haha dw about it<3"

What is something that's sentimental to you OC?

In terms of items, probably their violin and the coin with Tymora's holy symbol.

“I mislead audiences on purpose”

I was talking with @firepony67 a while back about something I noticed even further back, and I realized it’d probably be worth putting in a post. And then I sat on this draft for a while longer. But I’m trying to write up some of my lingering thoughts about Utsukushii Kare now, so I’m finally circling back to this. I’ve written before about how Sakai Mai (Utsukushii Kare’s director) has stated that she tries to follow the yaoi manga tradition that places semes on the left of an image/frame and ukes on the right and how this plays out in Utsukare. If you’re interested in more depth on this topic, this post is a good place to start, but you might want to work your way up from my last reblog and then move upward. I got a lot of help with finding background quotes on this from @xnoel and relied on translations of press material from @sparkling-rain (as usual, I highly recommend checking out their master post of translated Utsukare articles and other stuff). The screenshot-as-pull-quote below is from @sparkling-rain’s translation of this interview with Sakai Mai from the first season’s visual book.

When I was looking into this issue, I came across a quote from Sakai about the seme left/uke right thing that included a reference I didn’t quite understand at first.

(A quick note, because I had to look it up: your “oshi” is a celebrity/idol that you support/root for/are a fan of/advocate for. And I gather it sometimes applies to other types of people or even things? But it seems it’s mostly used in reference to famous people and related stuff.)

So, what did Sakai mean about misleading the audience on purpose in the hand-kiss scene? It was only when I went back to re-watch season 1 a while back that I figured it out--or at least, figured out what I think she meant.

In episode 3 of season 1, we see the hand kiss from Hira’s perspective. It’s one of the few times Kiyoi is on the left side of the frame. And it seems fitting for him to be in the seme spot. He’s initiating a few different kinds of closeness with Hira in this scene. Not only does he initiate physical contact by asking Hira if he wants to kiss him and then offering him his hand (even though he pulls it away the first time before Hira can get close), he also asks him a bunch of personal questions and drops some hints about associating with Hira more (like when he tells Hira to always keep his camera with him in the future, showing an investment in Hira’s availability to do certain things that suggests they’ll be spending time together). Basically, he’s moving towards Hira, in his prickly way. If he’s pursuing in a sense, then he belongs on the left side, right?

But Sakai said she was misleading the audience here. And in episode 5, which is the first episode in which we see things from  Kiyoi’s point of view, we see this scene from another angle, both in the literal and figurative senses of the phrase.

At first we see the hand kiss from the same angle as before. But after that, we get this counter-shot. I wish I knew how to make gifs because Kiyoi’s expression here is only truly visible when he’s in motion. In a screenshot like this one, you might think he doesn’t look terribly affected, but his eyelashes are fluttering like mad. (If you’re familiar with the show it’s a pretty memorable moment, so in that case you may not need to see it again to recall how significant an effect this has on Kiyoi.)

And where’s Hira now? He’s on the left. This whole thing was Kiyoi’s idea, yes. But has he stayed in control of the situation? For all his posturing and faking Hira out and everything, in a very real sense he has lost the upper hand. He offered his hand, yeah. He knew Hira would probably try to make use of the opportunity. But how could he have known that Hira would literally bow down to him in such an abject way, that he would kiss his hand in such an intense, devoted manner and turn this gesture into something so loaded with meaning? Or, maybe more to the point, that he would give him such a case of the vapors? 

This is actually a prime example of the way Hira, by ostensibly debasing himself, actually takes control of an interaction with Kiyoi. In the act of making himself a “servant,” he also simultaneously makes himself “Lord Hira” (the one who “gets stubborn about the weirdest things”). That’s a whole other topic I also mean to write a post about, but for now, suffice it to say that Hira has taken the leeway Kiyoi gave him by offering his hand and has used it to turn the tables on Kiyoi in a certain (very real) sense. When you get the full picture by adding in Kiyoi’s perspective on this moment, you can see that Hira is still very much a seme in this interaction.

I have an additional side note about the little fragment of subtitle in this screenshot (which uses @lollipopsub​‘s subtitles, which are no longer up as of this writing but I hope will be available again at some point--they’re very thoughtfully done, with an attention for detail that you don’t find in either Viki’s or GaGa’s subs for this show). Echoing Hira, Kiyoi says here that they were like “two dots that never connected.” Kiyoi continues by saying, ”until the last day of high school.” But for Hira, even the events of that day, kiss and all, didn’t constitute a connection. When he says the same thing about himself and Kiyoi as “dots” that “never connected,” he just follows it up by saying, “and eventually the last day of high school came about.“ I find it really interesting that Hira can assert himself in his sneaky but undeniable way, blow Kiyoi’s mind with this tiny gesture, and still look back and tell himself, “nah, we never connected.” 

Anyway, that’s what I think Sakai Mai may have been implying by flipping Hira’s and Kiyoi’s usual positions in the frame for this scene initially but then reasserting them when showing the same event from Kiyoi’s perspective. And I think that’s what she meant when she said she “misled” us.

So just because I'm obsessed with these two shows I decided I would go through the Moriarty the Patriot second opening and pitch how cool it would be as a Rolling with Difficulty opening.

Everything before this title card will be shots of various locations in the planescape the crew visits, like Arcadia, Mount Celestia, Avernus, The Beastlands ect and the title card would be replaced with the RWD logo

This shot I imagine being the Per Aspera dining room with Finbar bringing everyone food, Dani would obviously have her bottle of hot sauce in hand.

Although I'm still debating on what would replace this shot I feel either the Sprite Spring, The Heap or MX-IM's Sanctum would work well as long as at least one crew member was there.

The first scene that came to mind when I saw this was Dani and Roy going to street race with the newly operable Hell Ride but if someone else has a better idea throw one out

Everything in between the alley shot and this would be shots of specific locations or things. Maybe Davion's Ship, the Tenebris Cenobium, or Hira's Demiplane. At this frame though I think Mycroft would be replaced by Ione, Albert would bePrior Sepherim, and Sherlock would be Kyana

This frame actually inspired this whole idea. This is absolutely VR-LA with Mistra's silhouette in the back

This exchange between Sherlock and William is probably Kyana vs either Prior Sephirim or Endelion i don't know which though
