Forgive me for sounding incredibly basic and cringey but I do think that “ballad of songbirds and snakes” deserves a bit of credit for positively portraying Appalachian culture and acknowledging the struggle of those people.
I know Rachel Zegler is not Appalachian, but she pulled of a bluegrass/country sound in a way that at LEAST seemed more authentic than modern commercialized stadium bro country. (With some help from auto tune possibly)
Her accent in some of her lines could use a little work, but even my fellow southerners sound TERRIBLY unnatural when we try to mimic our own accents so what do I know 🤷🏼‍♀️
I’m from a middle class suburb of Nashville though so might not be the best judge lol 😂.
What are your thoughts if you are an Appalachian or southern person who has seen the hunger games??? Is it’s portrayal of district 12 good or bad?
Apparently Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson were both born in Kentucky even though their accents are more “neutral”.

After World War II, Guy writes, tens of thousands of white Appalachians moved to Midwestern cities. In Chicago, they generally settled in Uptown. Soon, this became a neighborhood of rundown housing and honky-tonk bars known either affectionately as “Hillbilly Heaven” or disparagingly as the “Hillbilly Ghetto.”
Initially, many of the newcomers worked in manufacturing, but as those jobs disappeared unemployment in the neighborhood rose. As financial problems grew in the community, so too did social problems. Day labor agencies exploited the newcomers, and landlords provided expensive, unsafe housing. Newspapers frequently depicted the Appalachian community as lazy, violent, and dirty, increasing the emotional toll migration had taken on the new arrivals.

Bug's Bunny's most disturbing crossdressing episode. (Hillbilly Hare, 1950) As with Hannibal Lecter, it was not enough for Bugs to defeat his enemies, he needed to humiliate them. Often sexually. In the many cases concerning Elmer Fudd, it was necessary for Bugs to be ultimately unveiled, for Elmer to realize he'd been sexually aroused by his enemy. A male. But these hillbilly's never caught on, and ended up face down in the creek at the base of a cliff. Take further notice of Bugs' costume here. He usually dressed elaborately, with accessories, and balloons under his blouse. Bugs, being a rabbit, is usually nude (except for his minstrel-show gloves), but for the hillbillies, this costume is merely some lipstick and two strips of cloth, bare suggestions of clothing, creating the illusion of an uncomfortable level of human nudity. And no hint breasts. Bugs is not simply crossdressing as a human female here. He is crossdressing as and UNDER-AGED human female. And the hillbillies go for it.

Tom Murray: from Black Larsen to the Beverly Hillbillies
Tom Murray: from Black Larsen to the Beverly Hillbillies
Tom Murray (1874-1935) appeared in fewer than two dozen films, most of them silent comedies, but some of them are so significant that we understate to say that he rates attention here. Murray’s best known role was that of the villainous Black Larsen in Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (1925), and that pretty much tells you all you need to know about his screen character. He typically played rough,…

Too many basic libs stereotype the “other side” as sister raping, tobacco spitting, fat, illiterate, stupid, uneducated, toothless, shoeless, pill popping, obese, cousin raping, incest loving, “meth heads” and wonder why they won’t vote the same as you???
On the flip side….
Too many conservatives stereotype the “other side” as devil worshiping, baby raping, bourgeoisie, spoiled, entitled, blue haired, coastal elite, uppity, ruling class, purple haired, stupid, weak, lazy, whiny, millennial, pedophile, satanic, special snowflake, “SJW’s” who are conspiring with China to overthrow America to bring global authoritarianism and you wonder why they won’t vote the same as you????
It’s because you aren’t listening!!

J.D. Vance is a Poser
I recently finished Hillbilly Elegy as well as J.D. Vance is a Fake Hillbilly by Frank Kilgore. I’m not impressed. My thought process was this: since I am doing this project on hillbilly horror that looks at Appalachian folklore versus folklore about Appalachia and the commodification of these ideas through hillbilly horror, I should find out how and what hillbillies think of themselves and maybe…

GET OUT ME SWAMP
Around here we pledge allegiance to the flag:
"Hey now, you're an all-star, get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star, get the show on, get paid
And all that glitters is gold
Only shooting stars break the mold"
