“Very well. A room for two, please,” she amended in a more amicable tone. The door opened and Hiccup strode through, dusting his hands. He must have cleaned out the stables for their horses and raked some hay for them. “For my comrade and I,” she explained, jerking her head towards him. “We only have the one bed,” the innkeeper apologized, almost cringing. “B-But it is the finest we ‘ave, an you get yer own bathing room.” Astrid sighed.

For the prompts-- arranged marriage, please?

Heeeey! I actually really like the concept. It's a solid idea, considering there have been many versions of this very thing since the fandom's inception. The reason I've never written it, is because it would undoubtedly turn into a multichapter long fic, and I already have one outstanding very long fic/au that I've been trying to finish for years. I can churn out oneshots in timely fashion, but the long fics trip me up.

You can give me another oneshot type prompt and I'll get right on it. Whatever you want.

Here just some elements I would include, were I to write an arranged marriage au long fic, though:

Astrid is the niece to a chieftain of a non-dragon-loving clan.

Hearing word that the Hairy Hooligans have somehow gained mastery over dragons, she is offered to Chief Stoick's son as terms of a fragile alliance between her tribe and theirs (a peace offering, if you will, in the guise of political marriage)

Stoick accepts, since Astrid's tribes have access to metals and textiles Berks does not.

Hiccup is less than thrilled about an arranged marriage, awkward soul that he is, but as his prospects on Berk are nil (or rather, no one's caught his eye), he relents. He understands his responsibilities as heir to Berk, and the value of a mutually beneficial political marriage.

Astrid arrives by boat, and Stoick, Hiccup, and Berk's most influential men and women are there to greet her, along with her Uncle (the chieftain), and her parents.

Hiccup is more than thrilled to see his betrothed, but Astrid takes one look at him and balks--not because she finds him unattractive, but because she can tell by looking at him that he is not a warrior of equal caliber to what she's used to.

They get married, and despite Hiccup's best efforts to make nice, Astrid has her walls up and is very standoffish. He absolutely refuses to consummate the marriage unless she's 100% down for it; he won't just do it out of some sense of duty. She, of course, is in no way DTF. So, they just lie and imply to everyone else that they did. He gives Astrid his bed. He makes a makeshift sleeping arrangement beside Toothless.

Astrid is not impressed by Snotlout hitting on her. She is also extremely wary of Toothless and the many, many dragons on Berk. She finds Ruffnut uncouth but oddly endearing. They become fast friends. Ruffnut passes her tips and tricks about assimilating into Berkian culture; not all of these tips are accurate.

She discovers Hiccup has a talent for designing and engineering. He can also forge and sharpen weapons. He is modest about his abilities. Offers to make her something. Anything she wants. She asks for an axe and he makes one that exceeds her expectation. This is really hot to her for some reason...

Astrid notices Hiccup and his dad frequently butt heads. Gobber fills her in on the way things used to be on Berk before Hiccup brought peace. He explains Valka's disappearance/presumed death, and the years of strife betwen Hiccup and Stoick that comes from a genuine place of trying to do their best, but not always seeing eye-to-eye. Astrid is amazed that Hiccup tamed a Night Fury and defeated the Red Death, in spite of all that was stacked against him.

She decides to understand dragons better. She cautiously goes down to the stables and finds Hiccup there, with Toothless, getting ready to fly. He offers to take her along. She has many reservations about the idea, but agrees.

Romantic Flight 2.0

After, they find a secluded hillside on which to talk. Astrid learns more about dragons, and why Hiccup cares so much. She gains a new appreciation for them, and for him. She decides she might actually kind of like him--and commits to giving the marriage an honest try.

They share a kiss--the first real one between them--and it is not unpleasant...

God Hiccup would be such an annoying cat owner. Buys fucking like not even gourmet cat food, he gets real fish (only the best for Toothless). He's constantly sending you pictures of his stupid cat Astrid receives a minimum of 7 pictures of Toothless that look almost exactly the same daily. There's more framed photos in the house of that cat than the people that live there. 0 pictures of Hiccup on any of his socials all of it is Toothless. Can't take Hiccup anywhere bc the cat has to come too (so many plans have been canceled bc the meet up spot isn't animal friendly). He takes his stupid cat everywhere has one of those goddamn backpacks and it's leash trained too. See him in a hardware store, ask him what he's buying and he goes "oh I'm building a new tree for my cat." and he has like an ungodly amount of wood beams and twine in the cart. You just know that cat is so fucking spoiled.
