If my boyfriend were a bug I think he' be a Common Blue Damselfly- and he think I'd be the grub of a Western Hercules Beetle!
Thus, I decided to draw us as them!

my lab group accidentally dug up a really big beetle grub so i'm gonna keep it and see what it pupates into 🪲👀
pic of the grub is under the readmore
Tumblr media
it's over an inch long and very chunky
based on size and appearance my best guess is that it might be an L1 eastern hercules beetle larva? but that might be wishful thinking bc that's my favorite insect other than bdfbs wbsnwsnkf. truthfully i have no idea

Special talent is using the sun to power technology! 💙 Princex Hercules Metalmark - Princex of Equestria. Heir to the Sun. Armorer. Has autism. Royal Alicorn-Changeling Hybrid (With Batpony/Heliacorn Attributes). 35 y/o. Agender (They/them and xey/xem mainly), Trixic. Likes history documentaries, playing the guitar, baggy clothes, cemeteries, volunteering, birds and brownies. It was initially named "Princex Malachite" and based off of the Malachite butterfly, but since I've changed its' name it doesn't really resemble what its' currently named after: the Tsetse Fly and Click/Deathwatch Beetles. Special talent is healing creatures! 💙 Princess Venusta Orchard Mason - Princess of Equestria. Heir to the Sun. Gardener. Builder. Farmer. Royal Alicorn-Changeling Hybrid (With Batpony/Heliacorn Attributes). 35 y/o. Transfeminine/Nonbinary (They/them and She/her), Aro/Sapphic. Likes worms, pottery, lemonade, architecture, foraging, climbing trees, falling leaves and making friends. She's mainly inspired by the strikingly blue Orchard Mason Bee, which I first saw around my early high school years iirc and fell in love with it. The other half, Venusta, comes from the Venusta Orchard Spider! The 'Venusta' part of their name actually wasn't initially there, but I thought it'd be a pretty edition, especially since the two bugs share the word 'orchard' in their names. Special talent is building strong structures! 💙 Prince Rosy Maple Brimstone - Prince of Equestria. Heir to the Sun. Influencer. Disc Jockey. Party Thrower. Royal Alicorn-Changeling Hybrid (With Batpony/Heliacorn Attributes). 35 y/o. Intersex (He/him), Ace/Queer. Likes hyperpop/house music, makeup, bright colors, flea markets/antique malls, soap carving, blogging and raves. Rosy is mainly based on the Rosy Maple Moth, but the other part of his name comes from the Brimstone Butterfly! Special talent is DJing and music production! 💙 Prince Atlas Adonis Blue - Prince of Equestria. Heir to the Sun. Drag Queen. Royal Alicorn-Changeling Hybrid (With Batpony/Heliacorn Attributes). 35 y/o. Demiboy (He/him and They/them), Gay. Special talent is performing!

I decided to try to learn about the hercules beetle and found out there is multiple kinds! ( There's several more other than these three pictured, I just got tired from drawing three alone lol)
Traits that all three share:
Its larvae live and feed on rotting wood, the adults eat fallen fruit and sap!
Only the males have these horns, they are used to grab, lift, and flip rival males!
They are amongst the biggest, longest, and heaviest bugs in the world(I did not see any specifically topping the chart but they all some BIG boys!)
They are harmless to humans and can be kept as pets!
(here's some links to the stuff I used if you wanna learn more!)

Hercules Beetle? My favorite animal
Animal of the Day: Hercules Beetle!
The Hercules beetle is a species of rhinoceros beetle. It is the longest extant species of beetle in the world, and is also one of the largest flying insects in the world!
Tumblr media
They are sexually dimorphic, meaning only the males have those iconic horns, while the females do not.
Tumblr media
The beetle's larvae feed on rotting wood, recycling the nutrients and cleaning up the forest floor. This is an important role in forest ecosystems! The adults eat fresh and rotting fruit and tree sap.

Hercules Beetle (Dynastes hercules)
This mega-beetle is the longest extant beetle species, as well as one of the largest flying insects in the world! Found in Central and South American rainforests, these rhinoceros beetles can reach a staggering seven inches in length, including the male's long horn.
Hercules beetles are highly sexually dimorphic, males setting themselves apart from females by the presence of a pair of horns extending forward from their head and prothorax. This species is polygynandrous, meaning that both males and females may mate with multiple partners over the length of the season. Their polygamous nature doesn't stop males from fighting for the right to mate with a female; they are known to engage in combat, where they attempt to wedge the other male between their horns before throwing them. Larger, stronger males are often victorious during this show of strength—there's a reason Hercules beetles are so big! These beetles can not only lift other beetles off the ground, but are known to be able to carry up to 85 times their weight!
Hercules beetle larvae are saproxylophagous, meaning their diet is composed of rotting wood. This makes them a beneficial species to rainforest ecosystems, as they assist with biodegradation and the recycling of nutrients into the ground. Adults feed mainly on fresh or rotting fruit, though they do not cause issues in the agricultural sector. In captivity, they may eat apples, peaches, grapes and pears.

Some look like pieces of rotting wood, bird droppings, or thorns. A moth that appears to be a splotch of turquoise mold reveals startling coral-colored hindwings when it flies. Another trails streamers that baffle birds chasing it through the air. [...]
A few engage in tactical mimicry: of wasps, of repellent beetles, of less-edible moths that are their cousins. Some are furnished with hairs capable of triggering allergies and anaphylactic shock. [...]
Though the preponderance are herbivorous as larvae, there are also carnivores and frugivores. One moth tricks meat ants into carrying its caterpillars into their nests, where the larvae dine delicately on infant ants. [...]
Among this spellbinding Australian bestiary are some of the world’s largest and heaviest moths. Coscinocera hercules, the Hercules moth, is found in northern Queensland and can grow to have a wingspan of thirty-six centimeters -- the diameter of a car’s steering wheel. Caterpillars of the Hercules moth feed in bleeding heart trees, and then they pupate for two years. The adult moth, which moves somewhat floppily, like a dropped sunhat, lives only two days. Earlier this year construction workers sinking the foundations for a school in Mount Cotton disturbed a giant wood moth, Endoxyla cinereus, the heftiest species yet identified by science and not uncommon, though it is rarely seen. A builder balanced it on the tip of a saw for a photograph -- a moth the size of a catcher’s mitt, its dusky legs dangling.
The architecture of a flower, tailored for pollination by a specific insect, can provide clues about moths unmet in the wild. Take the star-shaped orchid, from which Charles Darwin inferred the existence of a then-unknown moth with an exceptionally long tongue needed to tap the bloom’s nectary. Decades after Darwin’s death in 1882, such a moth -- a subspecies of the Congo moth, X. morganii praedicta -- was discovered with a ribboning proboscis almost three times the length of its body. The alliances between moths and other animals, as opposed to plants, are less well described, but as Lepidoptera elsewhere have evolved to drink the tears of river turtles, so too have unique dependencies emerged between moths and native species in Australia. There is a moth that lives in koala scat, and one that feeds only in the nests of finches. Most memorable is the moth found in holes hollowed out by golden shouldered parrots in the clay of abandoned termite mounds. There, this moth species lives off the excreta of nestlings. Though they function to keep the nest hygienic, the larvae have been known to spin cocoon masses that have blocked the entrance to the tunnel, leaving baby parrots trapped -- a gothic demise for the birds.

There’s these grubs on the flesh planet right? Huge nutritional value and everything. But they’re about the size of hercules beetle larvae. And really juicy. Valantinez just eats those and nothing else. Grabbing one whenever they come across one during a job. They do not eat for pleasure. They eat for energy. Besides the occasional piece of candy. Lucille begs them to eat Real Food for once. Practically on her hands and knees. But they simply ignore her.
