does anyone have reading recommendations that clarify the difference between liberalism and fascism? I’m having trouble distinguishing what is just like normal levels of imperial/colonial violence conducted by a liberal state and what pushes it over the edge into a fascist state. Is fascism simply mature liberalism? Is it liberalism in crisis? Can we only make historical, reactive judgements about what is fascist, which is to say, can we only know if fascism occurred after it has come and gone? I take the general point that calling all liberal states fascist can let them off the hook for types of violence considered normal or “just doing business,” invisibilising the daily violences they conduct as part of the regular maintenance of a liberal capitalist state. People are calling the US fascist for its direct participation in and funding of the genocide in Palestine - a diagnosis I don't disagree with, but if that’s the case, where do you draw the distinction between the US being merely a liberal state with aggressive global imperial ambitions and the US being a fully fascist state? Perhaps more bluntly, what’s the difference between a liberal drone strike and a fascist one? I’m struggling to understand the value of the fascist label, because everything it describes (ultranationalism, a theory of racial and cultural degeneracy/decline, paranoia about an imminent external threat expressed as violence against internal populations deemed to have insufficient loyalty to the country, a turn towards a mythologised tradition of the past, imperial expansion, genocidal projects against minority populations, etc etc) just seems to me like a description of United States in general lol

#if we call all liberal states fascist we risk exceptionalising liberalism <- point I am sympathetic to #but if that’s the case then like what does the fascist label get us? What does it ‘do’ as analytical tool? How does it help us understand #the world today and the history of the world? #was the iraq war fascist? If so are we meant to understand that the US stopped being fascist for a couple years #and is now fascist again? Despite the continued occupation & violence & sanctions in Iraq Libya Yemen Afghanistan etc during that time ? #are all the coups it did in Latin America fascist or just normal liberal behaviour? Was the Korean War fascist? The Vietnam war? #what about the Cold War? What about the genocide of indigenous people in North America? What about chattel slavery? #I guess I’m just at like a point in my knowledge of history that none of the governments or movements or actuons called fascist #seem even remotely different from just like regular imperial and colonial violence #and so like my current inclination is that either all of this is liberal or all of this is fascist #and that doesn’t feel satisfactory lol

At least 5,000 people have died and 10,000 are believed missing after Storm Daniel dumped so much rain on Libya’s northeast that two dams collapsed sending water flowing into already inundated areas. Communities face multiple challenges with 20,000 internally displaced.  It is reported that the eastern city of Derna, which has seen the worst of the devastation, as many as 6,000 people are missing and whole neighborhoods are believed to have been washed away in the city, according to authorities. Hospitals in Derna are no longer operable and the morgues are full.

After speaking with Hamid El Shaeri, Ibrahim Hesnawi, Ahmed Ben Ali, and the family of Najib Alhoush, the band leader of The Free Music, we decided to put together a little EP. This release will only be available on bandcamp and for a limited time. 100% of the profits will be donated. We have done a similar release after the port explosion in Beirut which raised nearly 20.000$ for the Red Cross, hopefully we can raise a substantial amount again.

The profits will be split between International Medical Corps (internationalmedicalcorps.org) who have teams in Derna on the ground, the second half will be donated to the Red Cross (www.icrc.org) who also work in Libya both directly and through their partner organization of the Libyan Red Crescent.

I recommend going into tags for countries with (former) socialist regimes that you know weren’t great (e.g: Russia/USSR, China, Libya, etc) and take a good look at who’s clearly going “nothing bad was done by these people ever 🥰 CIA conspiracies are fooling everyone!” vs people who post more neutral things.

I know a lot of eastern european and chinese users deal with tankies regularly, I’ve seen xiran jay zhao (not tagging them though) respond to deranged claims by tankies that they’re lying about their ethnicity to make China’s government look bad 🤦🏻‍♀️ You can go into my “fuck tankies” tag to see more people who’ve either made posts about tankies or just share our feelings on them.

Ambassador Stevens was sent to Benghazi to secretly retrieve US made Stinger Missiles that the State Dept had supplied to Ansar al Sharia in Libya WITHOUT Congressional oversight or permission.

Sec State Hillary Clinton had brokered the Libya deal through Ambassador Stevens and a Private Arms Dealer named Marc Turi, but some of the shoulder fired Stinger Missiles ended up in Afghanistan where they were used against our own military. On July 25th, 2012, a US Chinook helicopter was downed by one of them. Not destroyed only because the idiot Taliban didn't arm the missile. The helicopter didn't explode, but it had to land and an ordnance team recovered the missile’s serial number which led back to a cache of Stinger Missiles kept in

Qatar by the CIA.

Obama and Hillary were in full panic mode, so Ambassador Stevens was sent to Benghazi to retrieve the rest of the Stinger Missiles. This was a "do-or-die" mission, which explains the Stand Down Orders given to multiple rescue teams during the siege of the US Embassy.

It was the State Dept, NOT the CIA, that supplied the Stinger Missiles to our sworn enemies because Gen. Petraeus at CIA would not approve supplying the deadly missiles due to their potential use against commercial aircraft. So then, Obama threw Gen. Petraeus under the bus when he refused to testify in support of Obama’s phony claim of a “spontaneous uprising caused by a YouTube video that insulted Muslims.”

THIS is what the investigation is all about, WHY she had a Private Server, (in order to delete the digital evidence), and WHY Obama, two weeks after the attack, told the UN that the attack was the result of the YouTube video, even though everyone KNEW it was not.

Furthermore, the Taliban knew that the administration had aided and abetted the enemy WITHOUT Congressional oversight or permission, so they began pressuring (blackmailing) the Obama Administration to release five Taliban generals being held at Guantanamo.

Bowe Bergdahl was just a useful pawn used to cover the release of the Taliban generals. Everyone knew Bergdahl was a traitor but Obama used Bergdahl’s exchange for the five Taliban generals to cover that Obama was being coerced by the Taliban about the unauthorized Stinger Missile deal.

So we have a traitor as POTUS that is not only corrupt, but compromised, as well and a Sec of State that is a serial liar, who perjured herself multiple times at the Congressional Hearings on Benghazi. Perhaps this is why no military aircraft were called upon for help in Benghazi: because the administration knew that our enemies had Stinger Missiles that, if used to down those planes, would likely be traced back to the CIA cache in Qatar and then to the State Dept’s illegitimate arms deal in Libya.

They sold out our own Ambassador and àll of our men they could have rescued. What makes you think they wouldn't do the same to you? Thanks Obama, Biden, Hillary and all that worked with you, against our own men.

Not too thrilled that my other post is getting so many notes when I'm not satisfied with it for a multitude of reasons. Let's have a do-over, hopefully much more succinct and to the original point.

When Palestinians, actually basically all Arabs, or all Muslims, say "Jerusalem is holy to us it is the 3rd holiest city in our religion." The White Western Leftist (WWL) will say "That's so valid your religion is so interesting and beautiful Hamas did nothing wrong I love the Houthis!"

But if a Jew ever rebuts "Jerusalem is holy to us as well, it's our holiest city, basically the only one we have," the WWL will probably roll their eyes, scoff, probably say something like "Okay but like why are you still using your outdated Zionist death cult to justify colonialism? You really think the Bible justifies killing millions of Palestinians?" and start going on and on about how Judaism invented everything bad about Christianity.

My hypothesis: These people are not allies to Muslims (Palestinians). They are condescending to them. They are throwing them a bone because they feel bad about how the Muslim world has been treated, well ever since Sykes-Picot, but especially post 9/11, the Patriot Act, The War on Terror, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Drone War, Libya, Nato, The Arab Spring, the list goes on. They don't think Muslims are capable of building the kind of societies they want, not without their gracious help. They don't think Muslims should have the same ideals of democracy and human rights, because they don't expect that from the Brown People. They won't ever hold them to such a standard because "Ugh where do we get off lecturing them?" even though they would never think this of Jews.

These people are not equals to Jews, something something Sartre they think they are both superior and inferior (which makes them superior). They are not just trying to hold their fellow citizens of the world to account. They are trying to put Jews in their place. They are projecting their religious trauma onto Jews because they do not understand Judaism. They see Judaism as Power. They are trying to delegitimize Judaism as a religion (and it is a religion, including the parts of religions that give atheists the "ick," including a lot of mysticism). They are trying to caterwaul about Jews being responsible for the world's ills and that they expect Jewish People to be better than this. To evolve beyond religion and community and affiliation and identity. They want Jewish to be nothing more than a box ticked off on a census. A neat little factoid about yourself, like how your neighbor Cheryl has Norwegian ancestry.

My only conclusion is that these people find Jews and Judaism repulsive, and they find Muslims and Islam primitive. Unlike their parents' generation, they appreciate the primitive. It is noble savagery to them. Unlike their parents' generation, the comparatively cosmopolitan modern secular Western sheen of Jewry (applied to Jews against their will) is not something that we almost lost from the world, but an annoying holdover of what we almost successfully purged from the world.

Because remember, while they hate their parents and everything they stand for, they still deep down want Daddy's approval. So it makes perfect sense why the psyche would displace anger and trauma and all that caused by Christianity, and look elsewhere to place blame. It falls at the feet of Jews and Judaism. Because my culture could never, there has to be a missing puzzle piece that could explain- oh there it is. The Jews did it. And wow look how easily this can slot in with every other antisemitism conspiracy theory.

The audacity to think I could make a shorter version of that post 😂 But basically it's this: The WWL, the Zoomer Left, the Tankies, whatever name you call them... they think that they can "save" Muslims by offering up Jews, and the terrorist fascist fundamentalists like Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, they're on board. They're all in. Normal ass every day Muslims/Palestinians? They just want peace, they just want rights, they just want sovereignty. The WWL is not interested in that perspective.

They have not once in their lives thought of what they could possibly do in terms of reparations. No no, tweeting and marching for a weekend are quite enough. They have not once in their lives turned inward and self reflected on the ways they benefit from and their own role in these systems of supremacy, that have harmed Muslims around the world. Jewish blood is more than enough to pay for operation Iraqi Freedom. Jewish lives are a fetching price to assuage the Westerner's guilt. You know since they have so much trouble turning inward and reflecting on their own contribution to Islamophobia, it might do them good to practice a little תשובה... but I don't know 😌

I got you | Pt. 1

(A/N) Okay...for this one, I beg of you, do look at the warnings. It's a heavy one with a lot of possible triggers.

Pairing: Simon x Reader (no Y/N)

Warning: lots of angst, death of a loved one, PTSD, civil war, flashbacks, injuries, description of death

Synopsis: During the briefing for a mission, the Reader gets triggered and Simon takes care of her.

“Okay…now that everyone is here, we can begin with the briefing.”

Price got up from his seat at the head of the table and started to pace before the screen, which displayed the details for the new mission. He began to talk, but you had already zoned out. Paying attention in these briefings had never been your strong suit, your ADHD riddled brain just wouldn’t stay focused for that long. But you found other ways to entertain yourself, until the briefings would be over and you could bug one of your comrades to give you a quick overview. Emphasis on quick.

So, you started to do the usual. First, you fiddled with your pen, spun it around between your fingers, until you grew bored of that. The next thing was always doodling. Pros: it looked like you were actually paying attention and taking notes. Cons: you sucked at drawing and would quickly grow frustrated at your lack of talent, and as a result grow bored of doodling.

Of course the next activity was taking your pen apart and putting it back together as quickly you could, without making a ruckus. This was also usually the time, when Ghost or Price would take your pen away and tell you to focus on the briefing. Not that that would help.

So, you and Soap started thumb wrestling under the table. But that would only ever last until one of you almost dislocates their thumb and yelps in pain, which in turn earns a glare from Price or Ghost.

It rarely ever comes to this point. Briefings like this don’t usually take this long, but sometimes they did. Which meant you had to get creative.

Your first idea was to play ‘Goal’ with Gaz, but he was sitting across the table from you, and that would draw too much attention.

Playing with your bottle would also be too obvious.

You were lost in thought when a single word pulled you out of it.

‘Libya’

Your head snaps up and your eyes find Price, who is still pacing up and down. No one seems to have noticed your reaction.

‘Libya’

Flashbacks flood your brain.

Your family, running. You, running. Gunshots behind you. Your mother yelling for you to continue running. Then she falls…and doesn’t get back up. Your bigger sister grabs your hand and continues to pull you along. Away from the gunfire. Away from your mother’s body.

You jump to your feet, accidentally sending you chair flying. Everyone is looking at you.

You. Your sister. Hiding behind a car. She’s bleeding. She’s bleeding so much. People are yelling. There are more gunshots. It’s so loud. So, so loud. You look at your sister. She’s dead.

Your eyes jump from one face to the other. Eyes. So many eyes trained on you. Asking questions.

Eyes. So many eyes trained on you. Asking questions.

“Are you okay?”

“Where is your family?”

“Hey, what’s wrong?”

“Are you alone?”

Someone grabs your arm. You want to resist, you need to resist. But you don’t. Just like back then.

You get pushed. You don’t resist.

Your back hits the wall. You don’t resist.

Someone stands in front of you. You don’t resist.

“Everyone, out!”

Ghost. He’s here. He’ll keep you safe.

But your breath, it’s coming so quick. Your chest, it feels so tight.

But Ghost…

So quick. So tight.

He’ll keep you safe.

So quick. So-

“Listen love, I need you to breath with me, okay?”

Your head snaps up, your eyes finding his. They aren’t as hard and cold as usual.

You nod.

You watch him breath in and copy him. Well try to at least.

You watch him breath out. Slow and steady, but yours comes out in a huff.

He breaths in again. You try to do the same. This time it works a bit better.

And it keeps getting better. The more you breath, the better it gets.

“You’re okay. It’s okay.”

He keeps repeating these words, over and over.

“You’re okay. It’s okay.”

They keep repeating these words, over and over.

You look up again and find those eyes. Scanning your face. Calming you down.

And you calm down.

You don’t know how long you stand there, covered by Ghost, his hands on the wall on either side of you. He’s close enough for you to know that he is there, but giving you enough space to calm down.

“Feeling better?”

You nod, your eyes cast down to the floor.

He nods, his eyes trained on you.

“Take the rest of the day off.

You nod again, and when he takes a step back, you walk to the door. You open it and are about to walk out, when you stop.

“Ghost?”

He grunts, in acknowledgment.

“Thank you.”

You try to sleep. You really do.

But the flashbacks keep coming.

After hours of tossing and turning in bed, you give up on getting any sleep. Instead you get dressed in your workout clothes and make your way to the gym on base. On the way you contemplate on what you want to do. Cardio, hoping it would get you tired? Strength, hoping it would make you feel better?

But when you round the corner and look into the gym, all those thoughts leave your head. Because someone is there, training. Ghost is there.

He is wearing a tight, dark grey, muscle shirt with black sweatpants and is punching away at the sandbag. But when you enter the room, he stops and looks at you.

“Not able to sleep?”

You give a curt nod, which he copies, before he returns to the sandbag. You continue to watch him for a few moments, before you make your way to one of the treadmills. After placing your water bottle and towel where they belong, you turn on the treadmill and begin walking.

After some time, you up the speed and incline, continuing to do so until you’re running.

And suddenly, you’re running from bullets.

You’re running, your mother is holding your hand, your big sister is in front of you. Gunshots echo behind you. Your father is dead. So is your big brother.

You speed up.

Someone calls your name, but you don’t turn around. Turning around would mean slowing down, and you can’t slow down now.

Again, someone calls your name and this time you turn around. But then you trip over your own two feet and plummet to the ground. You hit it hard, but the ground isn’t still, it’s moving. And fast, and suddenly you’re flung off the treadmill.

This time, your name is uttered in pure panic and you hear heavy footsteps racing towards you. You curl together, preparing to be beaten and killed, but strong hands grab you and pick you up. And then you smell him.

You open your eyes and look into Ghost’s. They are wide in panic and shock.

“-uo okay?”

You blink at him. He says your name, the tone snapping you out of your confusion.

“Are you okay?”

You nod hesitantly and Ghost sighs in relief. Suddenly, he pulls you close.

“I got you. You are safe, I promise.”

Ghost isn’t a caring person. He is hard, cold and serious. He doesn’t do hugs, he doesn’t get concerned. The fact that he’s now holding you close, the fact that he’s seeing how bad you are doing and the fact that he’s concerned, brings tears to your eyes.

You start to cry, sob into his chest. You cry for your mother and sister. For your brother and father. For your cousins and aunts and uncles. You cry for your people and you cry for your younger self. The young you that had to grow up in the middle of a civil war. The young you that lost everyone while trying to escape. The young you that was brought to a strange country, all alone. The young you that never had a childhood.

And all the while, Ghost holds you close. He hums and rocks back and forth gently. He cradles you against his chest and rubs your back. He is there for you.

He holds you until you calm down and then some. And when he’s sure that you’re fine, he presses his covered lips to your forehead before he pulls away.

“What do you need?”

You look up at him, confusion clear on your face.

“What do you need? What can I do for you to feel better?”

You inhale sharply, and look everywhere but at Ghost.

“I…I don’t know. I just…I don’t know.”

Ghost nods and thinks for a bit before he offers you his hand. You take it hesitantly and let him pull you out of the gym and towards the barracks. You follow him until he stops in front of a door and unlocks it, before gesturing for you to go inside ahead of him.

You quickly realise that it’s his room and you turn around to ask him what he’s planning on doing.

“Relax, I just want you to sleep for a bit. When…when I struggle with…with flashbacks, I can never sleep. At least not when I’m alone. Maybe it will help you if you sleep here.”

He hesitates for a second.

“I’ll sleep on the floor of course.”

Tears gather in your eyes and you nod.

“Thank you. Really.”

He nods before he springs into action and starts pulling out extra pillows and blankets. Within a few minutes, the bed is ready for you, and a mattress is waiting for Ghost. It doesn’t really look comfortable, but you don’t voice your concern, scared of driving him away in some way.

“If you want to change, the bathroom is through there.”

He hands you one of his shirts and points at a door, so you quickly go there and change into it, before walking back into the bedroom. Once Ghost hears you, he turns around.

“Ready to go to sleep?”

You nod again and shuffle to the bed, before climbing onto it and tucking yourself in. Ghost does the same, just on the mattress after he turns off the lights. Once both of you are settled, you turn onto your side, facing Ghost.

“Ghost?”

He grunts, but turns in your direction.

“Can…can I hold your hand?”

There is no response for a few moments before you hear shuffling and a hand suddenly appears in front of you. You scoot closer to the edge of the bed and take it, holding it close while your eyes slowly drift shut.

The last thing you hear before sleep takes over you, is Ghost, muttering softly.

“I got you.”

tips for writing arab characters

writer here!! im a middle eastern writer whos noticed that theres a VERY significant lack of info on how to write arabs, so im here to help !! (however, keep in mind that im specifically gulf arab and may not be able to provide as much info on levant arabs or north african arabs. if there are any on here, feel free to reblog w more info !! )

dont get arabs mixed up w muslims. yes, a large portion of the arab population are muslim, but youd be surprised at the number of non-muslim arabs that exist. if you wanna write abt a muslim character, a post i made that might help is here 

list of arab countries, with the adjective:

algeria — algerian

bahrain — bahraini 

the comoros islands — comorans

djibouti — djiboutian

egypt — egyptian

iraq — iraqi

jordan — jordanian

kuwait — kuwaiti

lebanon — lebanese

libya — libyan

morocco — moroccan

mauritania — mauritanian

oman — omani

palestine — palestinian

qatar — qatari

kingdom of saudi arabia (ksa) — saudi

somalia — somali

sudan  — sudanese

syria — syrian

tunisia — tunisian

united arab emirates (uae) — emirati

yemen — yemeni

dialects/language:

dialects greatly differ—the egyptian dialect is the most common, followed closely by the levantine dialect

classic arabic is called fusha (fuss-ha), used in things like official documents, media, education. every arab knows it but its not used in day to day language except in media (all dialects basically come from fusha, but with slight changes)

'p' and 'g' (as in 'gurgle' or 'goal') dont exist in the arabic alphabet, theyre replaced with 'b' and 'j' 

depending on where theyre from, they may also learn a third language besides arabic and english (e.g. moroccans know french, a berber arab may know berber)

appearance:

arabs look different based on where theyre from. if theyre from the arabian peninsula, they have thick curly dark hair, tanned skin, and dark eyes. levant arabs are lighter skinned, and green/blue eyes are more common with them

adding on to previous point, arabs have a variety of skin tones, even if theyre siblings. using a real example, me and my older brother respectively look white passing and afro hispanic

dark irises are considered better looking than lighter colored eyes. eyes are usually thick-lashed, with big round slightly upturned eyes 

big noses are common, along with full lips (and hereditary dark circles for those with more tanned skin)

high cheekbones and well structured faces are also prevalent

culture:

varies depending on location

influenced by indian culture, IS NOT INTERCHANGEABLE WITH INDIAN CULTURE. that was aladdins mistake

poetry is so common, especially with romantic themes

songs also have romantic themes

youd be surprised at how romantic arabs are

dances vary extremely, from dabke (palestinean dance done in groups, consisting largely of leg/foot movements) to yola (emirati dance with battle origins, done using canes or fake guns) i recommend watching videos (tiktok has a lot of videos esp of dabke)

women also dance but you wont find a lot of videos of it bc its inappropriate

etiquette:

things such as giving someone your back, or facing the bottom of your feet towards someone are considered rude 

pda is also taboo (even with straight couples or even sometimes married couples)

cheek kisses are a common way of greeting, but not between genders

in some gulf countries, men greet each other with a nose kiss (not in an intimate way) just stubbing their noses against each other

genders do not mix at all. schools tend to divide girls and boys into two sections starting at a certain age (around age 10/11), and mosques are split into the mens side (usually larger than womens bc men use the mosque more)

having an extramarital relationship is very very taboo (even w hetero relationships) but it still happens. a lot. 

family dynamics (note that this is obviously a spectrum. this is the general dynamic, but obv it ranges from family to family):

NOT ALL OF US HAVE ABUSIVE PARENTS. sure theyll spank you if you skip school, but thats not necessarily abusive. its more strict, and youd be surprised at the amount of freedom some parents give their kids

yes, arranged marriages do happen. no, they arent necessarily forced, it just means that your parents had a hand in deciding who youll marry. yes, marrying cousins is a thing, but its much less prevalent now (also, ew)

fathers care. a lot. they dont show it, but they do. they also tend to joke around a lot

mothers tend to be the rule enforcers, and by far our moms are our best friends. we tell them EVERYTHING i swear 

aunties gossip a lot

uncles are a safety hazard

its not uncommon to have a large number of cousins (mainly bc arabs tend to have a lot of kids)

the average number of children 3 per woman, but from personal experience the older the generation the more kids (e.g. my great-grandmother had a whopping thirteen kids, my grandmother had seven, my mom has six, but a couple of my aunts only have one or two)

social class/work environment/school environment:

schools tend to be either arab curriculums but there is a high density of american/british curriculum schools

boys and girls tend to be separated in school around age nine/ten but some schools will be mixed genders up till graduation

yes, women work, tho admittedly some of them tend to have careers more than jobs (e.g. photographer, writer, etc while the men handle engineering, economics, etc)

no, not all of us are rich. in fact, countries like jordan, egypt, tunisia, morocco, and yemen (and infamously palestine) are acc struggling w poverty. its mainly just gulf arabs who are rich

furthermore, gulf arabs may be generally rich but a large chunk of them have the same lifestyle as an upper-middle class family in the usa. rich but not too rich. dont be fooled by the videos of guys wearing kandoras and driving lambos

speaking of kandoras...

outfits (keep in mind that spelling may vary since its all transliteration, and pronunciation may vary depending on region) (also keep in mind that even if we still live in the middle east, WE CAN WEAR JEANS AND HOODIES AND BAND SHIRTS. just, usually cover up more in public):

abaya: loose overgarment worn by women

jilbab/chandoor: also worn by women, type of long dress or tunic

the white robe all of yall know is known as a thobe, dishdasha, or kandora

the colored headscarf worn by men is known as a ghuthrain in the gulf, kevfiah in the levant. its kept in place with a black cord called a aghal, and under it they wear a skullcap called a thagiyah

those are the most common ones, however if youd like to get a lil more specific on clothong, the ultimate guide to arab clothing is here (it also has specified clothing for individual countries)

Hello guys! I hope you are doing well! I know I have been a little quiet lately because I had to be hospitalized routinely again at the end of last month because of my autoimmune disorders, but everything is fine. However, I did hear about the earthquake in Marocco at the beginning of the month and I am heartbroken. I had the privilege to visit this magical country at the beginning of this year, and I fell in love immediately with their rich culture, fantastic food, beautiful sights, and friendly people. And that's why I wanted to do something.

I've been working really hard with no break since the day I heard about the event to make sure I can create as many items as possible. So I present to you 'Spirit of Marocco' a food kit filled with some of the most emblematic dishes from Moroccan cuisine. In total contains 13 different dishes and 5 canned goods.
