I saw this post that was talking about how every diaspora Jew is given an indigenous Hebrew name, how they’re usually private and only a few people know it, and encouraging people to share theirs. I love the energy I just feel so anticlimactic because no matter which language my name is in I’m still Rachel

O, What's in a Name?
Ariel
Tumblr media
Franchise: Disney's The Little Mermaid
Origin: Hebrew (אריאל)
Meaning: Lion of God
Character Connection: The first known mention of the name appears in the Torah as the name of an angel. It's possible Disney decided on the name due to the fact that mermaids are said to have beautiful and "angelic" voices. However, it's more likely that Disney chose to name the character after the spirit from Shakespeare's The Tempest.
Like Shakesperean Ariel, Disney Ariel longs for freedom and is connected to a storm and shipwreck during which no one is harmed. Similarly to Disney Ariel, Shakesperean Ariel is also given a timeframe for when they will potentially gain their freedom (in their case it's two days instead of three).
Sidenote: It's worth mentioning that in the original text by Hans Christian Andersen, none of the characters have names.

My partner doesn’t read fic but I just explained the entire plot of Dead Man’s Party to her and now we would like to know: do you have headcanons for the Bats’ Hebrew names?
I don’t actually! I’ve always hc’d Bruce’s as being Baruch (Hebrew: בָּרוּךְ‎) but haven’t stopped to think about the others.
I think Yaakov fits Jason really well — not just because it’s another J-name, but because Yaakov wrestled with something life changing (wink wink) and came back with a new name and a changed destiny.
As for the others, I would have to noodle a little longer.

The name may have been an Anglicisation of the biblical Iscah (from the Hebrew: יִסְכָּה: yīskāh), the name of a daughter of Haran briefly mentioned in the Book of Genesis 11:29. ... Jessica (given name)

there is something that so indescribably liberating about being able to chose who i want to represent my mother in my hebrew name
i didn't get to choose by matter of my birth, but i do get to choose for something that matters to me more: my soul's return home
i am finally spiritually free

Hi! I’ve been trying to figure out my Hebrew name for a while. Initially, I was going to choose Miriam Yosefa, but later I found the name Sima and decided on Sima Yosefa, but now I’ve really connected with the name Ruth and am considering either Ruth Yosefa, Ruth Michaela or Ruth Michelle (I’m specifically picking either Yosefa or Michaela/Michelle for part of my Hebrew name in memory of my Poppy). What do you think?
Ruth is one of my favorite characters from the Tanakh, so I love Ruth Yosefa as a name. Memorializing your Poppy is also very sweet.
When I was picking my Hebrew name, I spent a few days mentally referring to myself by it to see how the name felt. You could try that, or try asking people who are close to you to call you by your potential names. Good luck on your journey!
