Summary:
After a grueling season and a brutal playoff run, they were finally within reach of the Stanley Cup. The Ghosts and the Bravos only had one more game to get through, winner takes all.
I’ve seen some posts saying that 911 Lone Star exploits 9/11 (in a negative manner) and I am so confused. After over 20 years, is even mentioning 9/11 in a show still bad? Is mentioning slavery in a movie exploitive? Is making World War 2 concentration camp movies exploitive (there are still survivors out there, afterall)? The 911 LS writers have treated the 9/11 topic with nothing but respect.
The writers bring it up here and there because it is a part of Owen’s character like it is a part of everyone in New York that witnessed the tragedy. And there shouldn’t be anything wrong with giving representation to those who went through it in the manner they have (I’m sorry if Owen’s not the representation you’d like).
Owen is a flawed character, but most people are, beyond what they’d care to admit. We can be pretty harsh on others while failing to see or ignoring our own faults. To me Owen’s a good representation of what a firefighter who went through that experience may be (even down to being white and male - as most of them were). He’s a hero to the public, but he has inner demons. He drank too much and focused too much on work to help deal with his pain. It broke his marriage and damaged his relationship with his son. The tragedy led to him having cancer like many have from the dust and smoke and chemicals that spilled out from the fallen buildings. We’ve seen Owen avoid therapy for many years, even while telling others to do so, because he’s “supposed to” be a leader and leaders, especially in “tough guy” fields don’t feel like they can. And like Judd, are also afraid to face their pain. He hides his pain, fears, and insecurities behind cockiness and humor and styled hair. He means to be good, he wants nothing but to save people, but he still hurts others without intention. I wouldn’t be surprised if a firefighter out there had the same story. It feels real. Not some fantasy version of what people think Owen should be.
That doesn’t mean it’s okay for him to have done some of the things he’s done, but it should be appreciated that he’s working on it. He shouldn’t be considered so far gone that he doesn’t deserve a 2nd chance.
Owen’s had one of the best character archs on TV that I’ve seen (even if it’s felt a bit too slow, imo). Struggling to deal with his cancer, going through depression, and now finally being on a healing path. Finally having gotten the therapy he needed, finally finding the roots of his pain and facing them. Finally on the path to his best self (because no one is perfect, but we can be better.)
Episode 3x18 was important for Owen moving on. He couldn’t complete his healing journey without the writers mentioning 9/11 again. Manny’s speech and Owen putting away the south tower metal at the end were solid moments. A great message. We will always remember 9/11, but we need to move on. We do not have to forget, we shouldn’t, but we need to heal. It’s been over 20 years. Lingering in the past only causes pain. (It made some fans hate Owen.)
So I ask again, how is it exploitive to respectfully and realistically represent a tragic day in history and the people affected by it?
