Can we talk about the healthy masculinity in the Haunted Mansion movie?
MILD SPOILERS
Like we see Ben grieving his dead wife like we see him break down sobbing crying like full on breakdown and we see Travis break down towards the end in the basement and neither time is treated like a joke!
They’re allowed to be upset they’re given the space and support to cry and it’s openly acknowledged that they need to do that.
Aside from it being positive masculinity it’s positive BLACK male masculinity which is even rarer idk I just loved this movie so much.

Sometimes family is you, your dapper son, a grumpy tour guide/genius, a “priest” , a professor with a heart condition and a medium.
With 999 ghost friends who forced you to have a sleepover bonding you forever.

It’s the Haunted Mansion’s anniversary today!!! The movie has me going back to my old Haunted Mansion brainrot😭😭. I wanted to explore making my own interpretation of the Hatbox Ghost. This isn’t definitive, I’ll probably tweak it in the future but I just love Hatty so much and I figured this would be nice to share for today.

The new Haunted Mansion Behind the Scenes video has a side by side between Constance and the Movie's Bride. I LOVE this redesign with all the flowers. Looks like Winona Ryder isn't Connie, but I think she looks fantastic.

Another HM moment I really liked
There is also another moment in the Haunted Mansion movie that I really want to highlight and (slight spoilers ahead) that is the moment where Bruce interrupts Ben's mourning of Alyssa with his "think of the cholesterol on [your wife!]" Which triggers a massive fit of laughter in the entire room.
Unfortunately it has become a common theme in many live-action movies (looking at you, MCU) to ruin any moment with even the barest potential for some deep emotion with a joke. Like they can't think that a moving and emotional moment cannot be funny. And yet, Haunted Mansion takes that trope and turns it on its head.
Because Bruce's joke isn't the typical, groaning "oh god, here comes the emotion train, can't have that! (insert some half-baked sarcasm or bland joke here.)" It is Bruce looking around at his new friends, knowing that they are trapped in this place ruled by a malevolent spirit who feeds on grief, and Ben, the person who was told point blank that he will be the doomed 1000th spirit, mourning about his wife, telling them about her, her favorite snacks - the same kind she was going to get when the accident happened. And there is a long and silent pause, and some tears.
So Bruce brings in a little cathartic laughter, because silent sorrow isn't going to get them anywhere. So it's "Imagine the cholesterol on that woman!"
Yes, it is a pragmatic moment. But it isn't Bruce shutting Ben down or diverting the situation with a joke; he's just bringing in a lighter twist. Because sometimes, laughter can also be a part of healing.
It is a sorrowful, emotional moment. It becomes a funny moment. It does not lose the emotional impact. Yeah, it seems like another moment of "Bruce being a determined, oblivious, senile old potato" - but I'm pretty much convinced that Bruce knew exactly what he was doing.
(Also, I feel like pointing out that most of the rest of the group tries to restrain their laughter at Bruce's interruption... until they see Ben smiling and starting to laugh too. Then it's all-around laughter. The entire group respects Ben's grief and sorrow! There is never a moment where he is told off or dismissed for mourning his late wife.)

ooh! since you’re doing alistair requests…
maybe dead!alistairxreader where he comforts you after a nightmare?? just need some fluff rn <3
i love this anon 😇🫶🏽 hope you meant something like this
𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬
Warnings- Alastair’s dead readers alive, mentions of beheading, he says sum about you dying to join him but it’s small
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It wasn’t short after your husband had died when you started having reoccurring nightmares. The one to help you through them? His ghost.
It was odd when he first showed up, and you didn’t even notice it was him. You screamed and panicked until he said it was him and he explained everything.
It was scary at first, and you didn’t quite know what to do. But slowly you got used to it.
You were left the mansion, all by yourself. It was lonely at times, Alastair was away doing god knows what most of the evening, and he usually didn’t show up until midnight or late at night.
You didn’t question him, despite desperately wanting to.
And tonight was one of the many nights you were left alone, Alastair no where to be seen or heard in the mansion.
You got into the bed, staring up at the ceiling for a while and your eyes slowly started to close.
His smile was wide as he danced with you, almost as if the others around you both didn’t exist. As if he wouldn’t be killing them later.
You both danced and danced, a spotlight on you both. At least that’s how you remembered it in your head.
And that happiness was all ripped away when the workers stared you in the eyes as they held the axe. Alastair’s head on the ground, his eyes that once looked at you with such love and adoration now looking at you dark and empty.
You knew it was a bad idea, the murdering. You told him that it was, he just ignored your words and did it anyways.
The nightmare seemed to never end as it went on and on, the exact events of you screaming and crying as they dragged you away from his body, you trying to go back. It was no use.
Alastair walked through the door, he didn’t expect you to be up but he didn’t expect to see you moving and whimpering in your sleep, words coming out of your mouth as whimpers.
His frown deepened as he stared, sighing and sitting on the bed.
He grabbed your shoulder, and you gasped as you woke up, looking around the room and your eyes landing on him. You sat up and stared at him for a little.
“Same nightmare?” He asked in the softest tone he could possibly have, which was still pretty deep.
You nodded, tears in your eyes as you looked at the man in front of you, wishing you could just cry into his shoulder, or kiss him just one more time.
He sighed again, looking at you again. He reached out a hand and he touched your face softly. The feeling was cold, and it felt odd but it was the most you could get.
He caressed your cheek, thumb going over your lips and he glanced down at them for a moment.
“I just wanna-“ you croaked out, now fully crying. You leaned into his touch.
“I just wanna touch you again. I miss you. So much.” You sobbed out, and you hid your face in your knees. He took his hand back.
“It’s okay. I’m here, aren’t I?” He sat next to you now, you turned your head and looked at him.
“Yeah but… it’s not the same.” You sniffled.
“I’m still me. I love you, okay? It’s been hard for me too.” He said, and for a moment you saw a flash of the old him, before he was dead.
You laughed quietly and wiped the tears from your eyes.
“I love you too.”
“You can always join me.” He said. You couldn’t tell if he was being serious or not.

Currently watching "Haunted Mansion" kinda like it.
But why do you?
well it depends on which one (i think you mean the 2023 film but im not sure)
i like the 2023 film because:
-found family dynamic
-ben is a bisexual he/they change my mind
-owen wilson
-the references to the original ride
-"nah" *grabs child and leaves house*
-danny devito
-deals with a man's (ben's) grief in a surprisingly respectful way and never makes him seem weak for the fact that hes grieving
i like the 2003 movie because:
-TERMITES MENTIONED
-ghost ball

"Why are they releasing Haunted Mansion in July? What are they thinking?"
I can almost guarantee you that The Idea was to put it out in theaters (it was slated for the spring of this year!) have its run, then have it on Disney+ by Halloween.
Also, they probably didn't want the HM fans to have to compete with other Halloween release movie crowd. Because frankly, HM is not a horror movie - not enough to hold its own against stuff like the FNAF movie and other Halloween releases. HM is a love-letter to a well-loved theme park attraction that just happens to involve ghosts, and (as much as I love the movie so much) if the movie was released at Halloween, it wouldn't be able to compete.
Yes, the Disney execs knew what they were doing, releasing it at the time that they did. But it was more in favor of box office revenue and availability for streaming than in the interest of Halloween and spooky vibes.
