Look I could name every problem with this film but at the same time I have zero problem with this film. The inventions and additions are if nothing else crisply elaborate and it’s a perfect tonal update of the original’s 60s corn to a modern iteration of the same. Some nice cameos and onscreen supporting bits but honestly this one is just a VIBE you are either with or not, like Hocus Pocus. Rob’s made some brutal movies but this isn’t a snide teardown but a loving recreation from a longtime widely publicized super fan. A breath of relief in a few ways.

The words hang from the ceiling and the sentences ricochet against the walls. Syllables merge together into bone and skin. Poetry takes flight and swoops for my mouth. Letters have tiny claws that cling to the cave of my throat. These tiny bat poems wait for the wind of my voice to come alive.

Skinamarink is worth watching. I do think people should see it. I think it replicates the experience of trying to remember a nightmare in the way that Eraserhead or Phantasm do. I would keep any further discussion of it or its reputation and accolades at arm’s length lest they taint it with an impossible expectation.
