Do you like bookstores? Do you like unions? Do you like bookstores having unions?

Answer yes to any of those questions, and boy howdy, do I have a call to action for you.

Half Price Books employees at several locations across the country have organized and, after months of being dehumanized by corporate lawyers, have finally reached the financial part of their contract! Hurray!

Except not hurray, because they are refusing to even budge on giving anything more than a pathetic 1% increase. And what’s worse, is the offer is actually a thinly veiled 6-7% pay cut, due to taking away quarterly bonuses that make up so much of the employees’ income.

There’s thankfully something you can do about it though! The unionized workers are partnered with UFCW, and they have made a website that has made it super easy to tell Half Price Books that you think their employees deserve a living wage.

The company has proven that it cares a great deal about its image, so any public support can give the bargaining employees a lot more power over their contracts. It only takes a couple minutes to fill out and any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The booksellers at Half Price Books achieved union recognition in January 2022, but their employer still won't give them a contract.

That's a scummy way for a "family business" to treat hardworking booksellers, who are seeking a living wage - and are being offered a real-terms pay cut instead.

Booksellers can't live on love of literature - they need to pay rent, buy groceries and support their families. Half Price, give HPB Workers Unite the contract they deserve!

Half Price Books stores in the MN have started a unionization effort relatively recently! There are 4 already unionized and attempting to negotiate a fair wage for their overworked employees!

The company made an absolutely horrific, insulting offer of a 1% pay rise+axing bonuses/health insurance options.

Then, this week (july 7-15 2023) the company was supposed to negotiate further with the union. The company refused to show up, so the union began an unfair labor practices strike. The company responded with laziness - rather than get scabs to cover stores, HPB *closed* the unionized stores for the rest of the week while continuing to ignore their employees.

What can you do? Call their customer support phone number and voice your support for the unionized workers!

Thanks to my mom for getting me a gift card to Half Price Books and only spending $1.15 out of my own pocket but I’m excited to read these! It’s been decades since I’ve touched ANY Rice books so this will be interesting.

Also it’s really interesting when you buy these books and you don’t know what edition or cover you’re gonna get so this fun.

I do have 4 books I’m currently reading so they’ll have to wait. I’m still reading The Mummy and not disappointed so far. I’m just waiting til Julie fucks Ramses. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thankfully, I didn't go nuts this time.... 😮‍💨 😅

Not like I could possibly need another copy of The Great Gatsby, but here we are; it's in the Chiltern collection. The bright-ass shiny pink thing is another journal by Flame Tree, quoting Pride and Prejudice. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is also a Flame Tree edition. I have an old copy of Dune, and I'm trying to find the rest of the series; here's book five. And I have some books by Carl Sagan but not any of his fiction; today I changed that.
