Another comic! This time I had to choose a scene from a movie to recreate, so I went with the ending of the Guardians of Ga’hoole movie (an all time favorite)!

The lore of "What's Happened To Soho": Places and history
I've been working on this project for a looooong time now, however feel like many people don't quite know what it is, so I'm making a lore post (art mode turned off for now).
So far, WHTS has a fixed setting with a few places that come up. This is a list of the basics:
The characters are in England, London to be exact. They live in Soho.
As the world is closely linked in with Lovecraft, Miskatonic University exists. They have a campus in Soho (fictional), as well as one further down the map which will be mentioned later. This campus has a lab and a library, in which Griffin works. Victor and Hyde study here. There is also a museum in close proximity, in which the events of issue 3 are going to happen with Elizabeth and a mystery character who I have not yet introduced. This museum is home to the famous portrait of Dorian Gray, a man found dead in his apartment, suspected suicide, Victorian era (hint). This portrait was lost for a long period of time, however was eventually recovered. This does not guarantee that it will not be lost again. The library contains a copy of the Necronomicon, however special access is required to this section due to the sensitive contents of the book.
There is a 3 hour drive from Soho to Little Innsmouth. Little Innsmouth started as a settlement of former Innsmouthians unhappy with the outdated system of the former town. Little Innsmouth is a popular holiday destination and has a rich culture. Innsmouthians have skills in fishing and jewelery making, just like their American counterparts. However, they are much more open and do not eat people. Some say that there is a religious cult at work underneath the tourist-friendly facade of beaches and seafood....but oh, don't take their word for it. The town is the current home of the ocean god Dagon, who the locals worship. Little Innsmouth is the origin town of Gylphie and Otto, who are 3rd generation settlers. The mass-movement occurred around the late 60s or early 70s. The townies do not like talking about it. Little Innsmouth is small, with only about 2 hotels available, yet somehow happens to be bustling with visitors and photographers during the season. The townies are overwhelmingly religious and devoted to Dagon.
The town is very close to New Arkham, which is also a very popular tourist attraction. The city offers an asylum, another campus for Miskatonic (with an even bigger library), a planetarium and a few factories. It is quite atmospheric, however very dangerous to be around at night. New Arkham have their own mayor.
The Red Rat is a popular pub in Soho, this is where Hyde and Lucy meet. Lucy works here as a waitress. It is 5 minutes away from the apartment in which Hyde, Jekyll, Griffin and Victor first live together. Their landlord is the Time-traveller. Justine lives in an apartment opposite the men. She lives with William, raising him due to Caroline's death. Sometimes she does odd jobs for the Time-traveller, intrigued by the concept of time travel. It is how she first met Hyde, however that was a long time ago. A lot has changed since then.
The Frankensteins (exc William, Ernest, Justine and Victor) reside in a large Chateau in Switzerland. This is where Justine, Elizabeth, Ernest and Victor were raised before moving. Ernest and Elizabeth are travelling characters. They move a lot, not staying in one place for too long. Ernest is a monster hunter in training, Elizabeth simply enjoys moving.
There is an unnamed acre of woods near Soho, which most people tend to avoid. There have been rumoured sightings of a Moth-man here, as well as "wolves". Lucius Moritz, one of the Moritz siblings, was last seen here after his return from a mysterious island. He has been missing since. Justine quite enjoys the forest. It is where she gathers herbs and plants for her teas as well as divination practices.
Whitby is a seaside town home to Mina Murray, Arthur Holmwood, Lady Westenra, Jack Seward and Jonathan Harker. It will be explored more in the near future.

Shadow Oaks the Campaign is starting today-here’s some last minute students from the Barbarian, Rogue and Bard Tracks
Hazelnut Minstone is the most vicious bitchy little gnome in the 13th year. One does not usually expect a gnome to be in the career path of a Barbarian. However thanks to an illustrious track record of being rather..unstable emotionally, she was REQUIRED to be in the Barbarian class, which provides lecture and classes on ‘emotional management’ to help Barbarians manage the very big emotions they have. She prides herself on being the best dressed Barbarian.
Jareth and Benny Slader are brothers; their parents are both bikers and own the local Tattoo Parlor and are responsible for tatting up any inhabitant of Shadow Oaks-or the ones who are just blowing by. They’re following in the parents footsteps of being both enthusiests about motorcycles and the fast life and irritating the local sheriff with their speeding habits. Jareth is considered a bit of a bad boy heart throb; he’s regarded as the ‘hotter’ brother and better spoken. Benny is a bit ‘dumb’ in comparison to Jareth, but he is very emotionally aware of himself. If you had to chose would you prefer the bad boy involved with his self image or the bad boy who is very emotionally avaliable? They are both ‘Oceanic Orcs’ which is the name for the kind of Orc who originated from coast lines and islands; noted for their unique skin patterns and culturally regarding scarification as a body mod and beautiful.
Cackle Hee Har (or Cackle for short) is the pinnacle of a tradtional gnoll woman. She is large, she is in charge, she is going to make it your problem. She takes no guff from anyone and could easily shove you in a trash can if you stand in her way. She has a younger brother she doesn’t hold in very high regard who is a cleric for ‘The Smiling God’. Cackle doesn’t seem to respect any male identifying creatures a the school, not even the teachers. She regards herself as the most high ranking hyena at the school.
Gylphie is an Owlin transfer into the Rogue Class. She is a bit of a affine addict since she has to be awake during the day going against her nocturnal nature. She is one of the much smaller students (almost smaller than the gnomes and goblins) and she seems to be allergic to dust. She rarely blinks and is very quiet in general. She seems a bit shy.
Patty is one of the Brimstone clan from the local tiefling clan. One of the more ‘forgotten’ about cousins, she takes advantage of being so ‘unmemorable’ into hopefully being a career rogue-which can open up many interesting job opportunities from detective to working for the government. She seems to excel at this line of work, but feels frequently over shadowed by her older sister Mary Jo and her talents.
Mary Jo is a Lore Bard and prides herself on her talents on the piano. Social, Beautiful and charismatic, Mary Jo is defiantly the dream girl as well as a fantastic bard to listen to. She is very interested in local lore and folk stories-possibly because she has to listen to her elders talk for hours on ends when she’s at home. She seems to love to listen to people talk and is a fantastic listener. She’s very Elly May Clampett in regards to she doesn’t quite realize the effect she has on people with her natural sweet southern charm.
J.T. is an obnoxious boy who for some reason thought joining the bard track would be a great way to meet girls and get an excuse to get close to them. He has yet to understand that Bards are more than just ‘whore whore fuck fuck’ and actually pride themselves on their art. He Plays for Shadow Oaks numerous sports team and seems to have dated around most of the school’s girls.
Mesmire is a Dragonborne and they are frequently annoyed with their co-actor J.T’s existance on stage. Mesmire comes from a poor background and they don’t like being reminded of it. One insult that frequently results in them starting fights is that their mother dances at the Road House near the highway (which she does, Saturday Nights for extra money) They do have an excellent sense of timing and is a very good actor who can get into almost any role very quickly and is easy to work with any kind of director.

One of my major childhood whumps was the end of the movie How To Train Your Dragon 1, when Hiccup almost drowned and then fell into fire and lost his leg. Other honorable mentions are from The Inheritance Cycle (major injuries and family members lost to an evil ruler), Jack Frost in Rise of the Guardians saving his sister at the cost of his own life, and Grimble from Guardians of Ga'hoole sacrificing himself to save Soren and Gylphie ^^
Those are great choices! That scene in ROTG got me too!

I think the internet is trying to make me a Guardians of Ga’Hool fan. I’m tuning into a wildlife livestream and one of the owls is named Gylphie and I’m currently making a sooty owl OC for Owlboy so I’ve been watching YouTube vids for reference and I saw multiple comments talking about the villain of the movie.

Inspiration from personal experience and knowledge, being disconnected from a homeland or a birthplace or a place of memory due to lack of revisiting doesn’t make it unacceptable to write about something. The chapter motivates the writer to actually go explore these forgotten locations and memories in order to open their mind towards new ideas and concepts as well as broaden their experiences. This will eventually inspire an unexpected idea to blossom from something very simple.
‘The great advantage, for a writer, of exile, the compensation for loss, is that it gives you a perspective, a vantage point. Loss is a magical preservative.’ (Hoffman 1997)

9 for Griffin, Jekyll, and Lucy.
Tumblr media
9. What would happen if the biggest secrets of these characters were revealed?
Lucy: Ms. Hart's biggest secret is that she masks her true identity in favor of a more glamorous persona for the stage. Lucy's true name is Lucy Westenra and she comes from a family that once was quite wealthy, yet due to the death of her father and her mother's illness she was forced to leave her home and work, rather than marry rich as she was not ready for marriage. If this secret was revealed, Lucy would be deeply embarrassed, perhaps slightly sad about not being able to share her true identity with Hyde, her lover at the time, or friends. Yet, she would eventually give in and ask for help, becoming more honest about her situation and getting the support that she required.
Griffin: Jack Griffin, chemist and librarian always has the same, simple, sometimes cold smile on his face. It never cracks. His biggest secret is how he truly is. Griffin grows tired of this perfectly sane, pleasant and always happy persona, this "nice guy" who never even gets to enjoy the fine things in life, as someone else is always there first to steal them from him. If this facade broke down, he would truly have nothing to lose, driving him to desperate means. Griffin would either go absolutely unhinged with a desire for revenge and reveal his much meaner hidden intentions, or he would simple disappear, forever away from the ones he was once close to.
Jekyll: Jekyll's secret....ah yes. This mystery bothers the mind of the good doctor day and night. He worries of it being revealed. If it were to come out, he would lose his reputation, his job perhaps and even this title of being effortlessly "good"- because he isn't, yet he truly wishes he could be. Either way, his Hippocratic oath wouldn't survive it.

Concept Statement
The contemporary sphere in which we inhabit is subject to an oversaturation of imagery. The digital age has provided unlimited freedoms for creating and distributing imagery and consequently art. Historically, art has held a role in society for portraying rebellion and initiating rebellion through the rupturing of certain ideals or societal structures. However, In a modern framework, traditional art forms often lack the ability to instil the idea of resistance against certain prejudices or limitations given the competition with other 2D or 3D forms of visual representation on a digital level. Contrast is found when looking at the ability for traditional art forms to inspire individuals compared to interactive art and performance art.
The connection formed between the individual and the artist within interactive and performance art provided the removal of the ‘fourth wall’ allows a direct invitation for the viewer to participate in the portrayed rebellion.
My work has evolved from this concept and involves not only interactivity but collaboration, and an element which strengthens any rebellion or resistance movement. The work is four different ‘bon bons’ or ‘christmas crackers’ that have been redesigned and produced for the purpose of initiating a conversation about prejudice and rebellion. This interactive piece prompts one people to select a cracker, labelled with the common prejudices of racism, sexism, homophobia and classism, and then ask another to break it with them. This prompt represents the common desire to resist the prejudiced behaviour presented and join together in order to prevent the behaviour from continuing.  In this way, interactive art is able to hold relevance and power to evoke rebellion.
Due to its unique and often confronting nature, performance art and interactive art often sparks conversation within viewers. The intimacy provided by interactive work is able to stimulate empathy along with an array of other emotions, as explored by Nathaniel Stern (1) “interactive art disrupts our relational embodiment”.  My work reflects this notion as within the bon bon there is a small questionnaire relating to the relevant prejudice. The conversation intended to begin between the two individuals who broke the bon bon together begins as factual thinking “Have you ever experience racism?”. It then develops into a reflective thinking “Did you do something to stop it? If not why?” and then shifts into forward thinking “Can you imagine a world without racism?”. The order of questions is vital to ensuring the conversation addresses the issue whilst encouraging action to combat the issue in the future. This discussion combined with the metaphorical “breaking” of the bon bon serves as an invitation for both individuals to join the rebellion in collaboration.
The development of this work stemmed from the analysis of various interactive works as well as performance work. Most interactive art which seeks to embody rebellion draws upon encouraging the audience to either interact with the work or input their own contribution. Mary March’s ongoing work of Identity Tapestry (2008-2018) provides the viewer to create their own individual rebellion towards stereotypical identity statement. The work consists of 200 pieces of acrylic that contain an identity statement in which participants will then begin to weave their chosen yarn around statements that they mark as a part of their identity. The interaction between the work and the viewer was an integral interpolation. Hence, without the viewer, the work would not possess meaning.  This notion is presented within my work as the bonbon intact holds little meaning thus the interactions between the two individuals provides the main body of the work.
The materials within the work are paper, toilet roll, ribbon. These simple elements are merely a way of communicating the message intended for the viewer and ensuring a unified and unique dialogue is created for each participant. The words presented on the bonbon along with the questions inside are confrontational however the questions posed and issues raised to create an opportunity for positive movement to be made towards a future without these prejudices. In a broad sense, traditional art practices still possess the power to inspire or create rebellion yet the oversaturation of imagery within society diminishes its uniqueness. However, interactive art is successful in portraying rebellion in a relevant manner as it enables each participant to have a
unique experience with the rebellion or resistance at hand. Participation in the work allows each viewer to become an activist in the movement, this notion is embodied through my work.
