What kinds of merpeople the Termina Contestants would be

(already shared these thoughts on twitter, might as well share them here too)

Pav's a lionfish because they're invasive, they move their spines in a way that's similar to peacocking, and they have venomous stings.

Marcoh's a mantis shrimp because they punch the shit out of their prey. Simple answer.

Daan's a moon jellyfish because of Blank Soul, how they're the most common jellyfish for others to pluck out of the wild for a pet (but often kill them due to them needing specific tanks), and... moon and all... :3

He'd also be really cute as a jellyfish. I'm biased.

Abella's a giant pacific octopus because they're incredibly smart and strong. Also the red reminds me of her hair and it'd be fun to imagine her using all her octopus arms to tinker with stuff.

Olivia's a leafy seadragon because of how they blend themselves into the plant life they make their homes. Mermaid Olivia wouldn't be able to swim strongly but I like to think of her grabbing onto plants to help move herself around in kelp forests. :D

Levi's a spotted garden eel because they live in these little sand holes (trenches :3c) and are rather shy. They can however get used to certain presences such as people in aquariums. I recommend looking at the Sumida Aquarium story.

O'saa is a yellow boxfish because yes yes yellow mage, but these fish also can release deadly neurotoxins into the water which is basically hurting if you think about it.

Samarie is a gulper/pelican eel because I was obligated to make her a deep sea fish and it reminds me of Dysmorphia. Also she'd be a cute eel mermaid.

Tanaka is an oarfish due to them being known for being found dead or dying in shallower waters before earthquakes or tsunamis. Literally the opening kill as a fish. So sorry Tanaka lol.

August is an Orca because of their hunting tactics being so brutal and said hunting tactics being passed from parents to children in a pod, making different pods having different tactics and cultures. Like how Rag's influence can be seen in August.

Karin is an orange-lined triggerfish because of how territorial and aggressive they are despite their appearance. They often catch new salt water tank owners off guard by how willing they are to throw down.

Caligura is a goblin shark because it's a deep sea fish that feasts upon bottomfeeders. I also refused to let Caligura be a fish that even I could find cute. :3

Marina is a clownfish because the anemones are kind of like a warding sigil and she's a silly billy among the horrors at times. :3 They are also one of the tropical fish to be able to change from male to female. They are also my favorite childhood fish. Someone had to be one.

And finally, Henryk is a blue angel because despite how they look, they will poison the shit out of you and it will be painful and suck so much. Not worth touching.

Hmm I would say this mermaid version of sun and moon are not based on any specific fish

My main goal with these designs was so make something kind of magical and ethereal

But! I will say gulper eels and the fins/patterns of a lion fish are things I keep in mind for them

Also in general @/chknbzkt ‘s creature designs are a huge inspo I definitely recommend checking out their mermaid art if you ever get the chance

Yes this is mer blue moons pups.

Two of them are based on the fact that in normal RBB, he is made of a lunar and a blood moon. The last one is just someone I made up.

You have red moon. (Who is the Blood Moon representative in RBB) He based on a gulper eel. Which gives him an uncharacteristic ear to ear grin. He also is the craziest about eating other mer. Mostly unable to control himself around others especially if they are bleeding. Lives mostly in the deep sea. Not enjoying the light.

You have what is essentially Sun copy (RBB lunar) but we are going to call him false star. False star is the only one of the three that did not gain the gene that makes other Mers seem delectable. He still has to eat an egregious amount of food but mers are only on his menu in desperation. He also is the kindest. Trying to keep his siblings out of trouble. Based on a moray eel.

Then you have angular. Referencing to an eclipse where it does not go total. She acts mostly like Blue Moon. Sharing a lot of his traits. Able to mentally grow out of mer eating but at this age she's still pretty ignorant to the standard social acceptance of that sort of thing. Is based on the same species Blue Moon is but more focused on the seahorse and leafy sea dragon traits.

The more dca designs are of course based on @artoutoftheblue mer designs. But here are my beast ones down below.

Suddenly thinking bout monster zoo Sun and Moon aus again, first thought was spiders, then snakes, then bugs and now I wanna start a whole ass conversation about it but don't know where to start.

Also thought about multiple Sun's and Moon's being in the zoo, then gulper catfish Moon vs eel Moon if they're put in a tank together. Gulper catfish Moon would definitely be able to swallow him but it wouldn't not be a good time because eel Moon would be very big and heavy so catfish Moon would be stuck at the bottom of his tank, his belly like an anchor keeping him down there. There would be much regret which eel Moon would actually find funny, goldfish Sun and eel Sun would get along pretty well. They would probably be playing during this whole event.

Also catfish Moon got challenged by eel Moon to see how much he could take.

Catfish Moon: "Bet I could even swallow you."

Eel Moon: "Do it then."

Which is how catfish Moon ended up like that in the first place, the noms were consensual. Just a fun thought.

What are all the sea monsters in mythika?

Not counting the lake monsters like Ahuizotl and Abaia ect. I only name the SEA monsters, not the aquatic or lake monsters.

Bakunawa - A variant of the Abaia in my project, but more based on the gulper eel, not big enough to swallow a moon of course, but still pretty big enough to swallow an entire sloop. They are deep sea Abaia.

Akheilos - The monstrous white shark-sized horror shark.

Isonade - The demonic Thresher Shark.

Akhlut - In it's aquatic form only, the Akhlut in my project can transform into forms that fit the environment, it can grow wings to fly and become half wolf/orca to adopt to aquatic life.

Globster - An aquatic ooze

Berberoka - Also living in swamps and rivers, there is a bigger Sargassum variant that lives in the ocean, Berberoka in my project are plants, kelp monsters.

Boobrie - While mostly living near swamps and rivers, they also live on beaches and in the ocean, these are giant monstrous Hesperornis.

Caleuche - The ghost ship

Caspilly - The monstrous lion-fish.

Echeneis - The speed-sapping Remora fish that can stop the biggest of ships to feed on it's speed.

Haietlik and Ikuchi - My favorite Sea Serpents.

Siren - A harpy variant with a beautiful voice and face, but nasty temper, they have beautiful blue feathers and mostly feed/torture sailors and other sea-going folk.

Heikegani, Karkinos and Saratan are my crabs, they mostly are coastal/beach going encounters, but some attack you from the sea.

Umibozu - Undead black-water elementals, the sea variant of the lake-going Hinqumemen.

Charybdis - The giant whirlpool creating toe-biter horror.

Longgui - Another name for the Dragon Turtle

Lusca, Kraken, Rogo-Tumu-Here and Iku-Turso - All my octopus monsters, spare for Migas which lives in swamps and trees.

Marool - the Demonic Angler Fish.

Merrow, Adaro, Zitiron, Yawkyawk, Siyokoy and Scylla, all my aquatic merfolk horrors.

Morgawr - A Elasmosaurus-like horror that also lives in lakes, but also in the sea.

Nakshatra Meenu and Stella the starfish horrors mostly live on the beach, but can attack you from the sea as well.

Nereid - The water nymphs live in any water.

Con Rit - The parasitic giant water centipede/Ragworm.

Qalupalik - The sea hag.

Naujakuksualuk - The giant sea roc based on the seagull.

Sazae-Oni - The monstrous or demonic sea slug.

Sermilik - The ice-controlling polar bear is sometimes found in the cold seas swimming around using it's ice-creating abilities to form ice-platforms when it needs to rest.

Shen - The illusion-creating clam monster that lures sailors into it's giant clam-maw.

Selkie- Both the gentle seal-variant, the powerful Walrus variant and the evil Leopardseal variant live in the cold seas.

Ahkiyyini - These skeletons use their music to control the waves and turn the most gentle water into a raging ocean within seconds.

Shellycoat - These aquatic trolls can be found in and near any form of water.

Trolual, Raudkembingur and Bakekujira - My three whale horrors, Raudkembingur is a demonic variant of the Trolual and the Bakekujira is an undead Trolual whale.

Vatnsandi - The gaint manta ray horror.

Tizheruk - The ice wyvern variant can be found in the ice cold ocean.

Ziphius - These half fish and half dophin horrrors use their extremely sharp beak and dorsal fins to slice through boats like a knife through butter.

Topielec - These sea zombies are found in any form of water, oceanic Topielec are mostly undead sailors, pirates or other.

For the "Insert Tidal Here" Splatoon AU, I wanted to give a bit of a darker story to how Sun and Moon met and then met Stark. they themselves have been through a lot, and their adoptive elder brother, a giant deep-sea squid, was separated from them when they were younger. Their actual parents are either missing or dead and while I wasn't intending for angst I tripped and fell in an angst puddle on my way to write this.

Tw: Body Horror, Trauma

So Sun has the most traumatic story of the brothers. His town where he grew up was on the other side of the Ravine, a cave system that had many underground cities under the Splatlands. One of the cities was a very small community of Starfish, Anemones, and some other Clams and Shellfish. A sickness suddenly hit the Starfish and Anemone citizens and after a few weeks it looked like they would be fine...but then the second wave hit. The anemone citizens got super sick, dying off by the handful, as did the clams, but the starfish got it worse. Starfish wasting disease hit hard, and those that were affected were basically mindless zombies of their former selves, ripping off their arms/hair, legs and chopping off other parts in an effort to rid themselves of a disease that was affecting them on a level they couldn't understand. Whole homes turned into crime scenes overnight and there was no nearby doctor prepared for this level of disease. Sun was one of the very lucky few that got sick but didn't get the full disease, but he lost his family in the process and worse the city was hit so hard that people began moving out in droves. Sun was by himself for a long time until he was forced to leave and wander the tunnels looking for a new home.

Moon was not much better off. He was separated from his family after a cave-in wiped his city off the map and left many of them citizens scattered. Moon was trapped inside his home while his family was out getting things and the house wound up several feet under the rocks and sand. After a while, a rescue crew tried to come help survivors but the damage was done. Too many people had been trapped under the crushing weight or worse their homes had caved in on top of them. Moon was at risk for all of this, when they found him he was in the pantry as that was the only part of his home that hadn't collapsed yet. His family was never found lost beneath the sands and he took to the Tunnels to find somewhere else to go.

Eclipse was a Deep Sea Squid who found both boys wandering about the tunnels 2 weeks from each other. He found Moon first and made sure to take care of his needs like making sure he was fed and had proper clothing. When they found Sun, who was missing 2 of his starfish arms due to being sick, afraid, and stressed, he nursed him back to health. Eclipse was kind and careful around the boys but primarily took to fighting any Octarians and Larger beings that would come looking for a fight. One such battle saw that he lost an eye, which worried the boys to no end and bound them tighter as a family. They stayed together for about 2 years before they were forcibly separated and the two brothers had no choice but to head up into the Splatlands for help and a new home.

A few days into their travel, they meet up with Stark, who kindly takes them with her to Splatsville and let's them crash with her while she's doing Turf Wars. They boys are worried that if she leaves for a "war" that she won't come back but she shows them the videos and previous Splatfests and assures them that she'll be fine. Over time they grow more attached especially when Stark gets sick and Sun has a panic attack, that sends Moon into a panic of his own, and they sit down and talk about their pasts and what they want to do going forward. As they grow up, Sun and Moon decide they want to help with Stark's games so they learn to take up cooking (Sun primarily, Moon is best kept away from an open fire) and creating sweet things to share. Along the way they start making the Drops, specialized candies used for enhancing abilities for a shirt period of time in game, but can be eaten at anytime for enjoyment and a boost of energy! Stark shares them with some of her team mates, then the fellow members of the opposing team to keep fun matches balanced, then other teams found out and started asking for orders. Stark tells the boys that they're candies are a hit <they're kinda miffed because they made them for Stark and only her...darn her sharing> and they start planning to open a little pop-up shop that sells them before matches.

Eventually, they set up a store on the main street, "Swell Sweets", and begin making different flavors and styles of sweets but still focus on the Sundrops and Moondrops. Sun runs the store during daytime hours and cooks the batches of candy. Moon runs the shop at night and does candy packaging. Stark does the marketing and is one of the faces that you'll see selling when she isn't doing Turf Wars. Once she ages out of doing Turf Wars with the other teens, she takes up running the store full time with Sun and Moon. Sun can be seen on the streets during Splatfest since he's a huge Deep Cut fan. Moon is more of a fan of Harmony and her former band The Chirpy Chips, having made her a gift basket and also hanging around the store at times and chatting her up about music. Stark, when not in the shop with Sun or Moon, can be found on the main street handing out flyers to advertise.

Through the years, Stark would visit her family in Inkopolis often. When she left her parents had adopted an octoling baby sister and then a year later, gave her a heads up that they were adopting another octoling, a baby brother named Jamo this time. As the years went on, Stark would visit a few weeks out of the year to meet up with her family and then come back home to the Brothers. One day, about 8 years later, however, she brings her back to town. He'd taken an interest in moving to Splatsville to hang out with his sister and also battle in Turf Wars. Their middle sister, Jazz, had decided to stay in Inkopolis and compete there primarily, so he wanted to branch out and explore.

At first Sun and Moon Don't know what to do with this new visitor, especially one taking all their attention away from them. They try to scare him at first, Jamo doesn't live with them and he stays with friends in another apartment, but it doesn't work as they want it to. Sun's overly intense personality and sly attitude only makes Jamo wonder if his sister has been manipulated to stay with them. Moon insists on trying to scare Jamo off, inviting him into the backroom to show him the candy but then using his glow-in-the-dark patterning and extending out his jaws to give him a frightful scare. All Jamo thinks is that his sister is being threatened to stay under pain of death. Eventually, Stark catches on and gets into a fight with them, annoyed that they've been so rude to her brother as well as way too controlling of her life. The brothers apologize to her and try to make up for their actions, inviting Jamo back and gifting him some of the special candy they made for him and giving him a rightful apology as well. And while Jamo doesn't immediately trust them or forgive them, he does understand that they have been close for a long time and they were afraid of the dynamic shifting. He puts up with them for her sake though he still finds them strange

Eventually as things calm down a new shadow is on the horizon...an old lost elder brother from long ago makes a surprising appearance...but I gotta work on his design so I'm taking my time. Hope yall liked my insane ramblings as I fall headfirst into another AU!

- Cockroach. Think about it, the indestructible roach would make a good dark/bug type hybrid. - Tardigrade. - Blobfish. - Kiwi bird. Since Sun and Moon has introduced a koala Pokemon to the world, I think it's time that New Zealand had a turn at getting their own Pokemon. And since there is already a sheep, a kiwi bird would be a good addition. - Tuatara.

Wood Pigeon. - Civet. - Aye Aye. A cute little normal/dark type hybrid maybe, or maybe a ghost type given its eerie yet adorable appearance that makes it the Steve Buscemi of the animal kingdom and everything. - Glla Monster. - Komodo Dragon. Poison/dragon type hybrid, it would make sense because the Komodo Dragon is known for having particularly foul and dangerous breath. - Assassin Bug/Kissing Bug. - Thylacine. - Anglerfish. I don't count Chincho/Lanturn as an anglerfish because they're both too friendly looking to be the menacing and dangerous angler, and Huntail is based on a viperfish and gulper eel. An actual Pokemon based off an anglerfish would be kind of impressive and I think they would be able to do one without toning it down - after all to try and tone down the Anglerfish is like trying to tone down nature itself. - Sarcastic Fringehead. This fish's name is not a typo, a joke, or some kind of heavy metal rock band it is a real fish that lives off the Pacific coast of North America and views any trash or other places as a home that is worth protecting, they can extend their jaws like the vampires from Blade II and the males compete for dominance by slamming their mouths against each-other (so it's basically mouth-wrestling). This guy is just asking to be made into a Pokemon. - Lionfish. - Basking Shark. Since there is already a typical shark type Pokemon in the form of Sharpedo and Garchomp, this one definitely deserves a turn at being a Pokemon. - Goblin Shark. It has an extendable jaw, nuff said.

Mermay 2022. XX: judgement.

I had an idea, pretty early on, that this could be a research vessel taking a look at deep-sea things; aside from its relevance to the card meaning, the idea amused me. This isn’t directly any particular remote-operated vehicle, because I didn’t see a picture I could use for reference of that on my brief search. The triangle with the squiggle in it is the MBARI logo, which apparently is a gulper eel; I’d had NO idea an that was what it was, because until I looked up the wikipedia page to hopefully find an explanation, I’d only seen it in small or low-quality images.

I’m not sure if I recommend using this with the Table of Races from a previous post (https://randomencounters.tumblr.com/post/631073167702687744/okay-fine-a-d100-table-of-races). I was trying this table out and, sure, a Drow Were-Styracosaur, a Succubus that turns into a Hyena when the moon is full, sure, but I’m not sure even I could handle a Mi-Go Were-Baleen-Whale.

Reviews of All Scrapped Spaceword Betas

Exactly what it says in the title. This is also for my reference, as I might redesign some of these later for funsies.

I’m only including Pokemon that were 100% scrapped (we’re not here to argue what might have become what) and aren’t evos/pre-evos of existing Pokemon. Also, I’m using the English fan-translations for the names because I don’t speak Japanese.

Flambear/Volbear/Dynabear

Our original fire starter, and yeah, I can see why this was scrapped. For starters (heh), it looks more like a rodent that evolves into a lion than anything resembling a bear. And secondly... it doesn’t really have a clear focus, nor a memorable design. It’s just kind of a rodent-bear thing with flames tacked onto it.

The best Pokes usually have a "catch” to them, and these guys lack that. For example, this got replaced by Cyndaquil, which has the concept of flaming spikes that form out of its back. That’s memorable. This, well, isn’t.

Possible reason for being scrapped: Lack of focus/interesting design

Pokes to fill the void: Teddiursa and Ursaring are probably the closest in terms of being bears. Something about it also reminds me of Growlithe/Arcanine, probably because it’s a fluffy fire thing that evolves into a bigger fluffy fire thing with a mane and black markings.

Cruz/Aqua/Aquaria

This has the same problem as the Flambear line, just less extreme. It’s okay, being a little plesiosaur that evolves into a bigger plesiosaur, but it also lacks an interesting catch to it. The pearls are maybe something, but they’re not really emphasized, just kind of tacked on. Plus Dragonair kind of has the crystal neck ornaments on lock. And the horn. And the underbelly. And the water theme...

Whoops.

I definitely wouldn’t be opposed to a plesiosaur water starter in the future, but it would probably have to be completely redesigned.

Possible reason for being scrapped: Lack of focus/interesting design; too similar to Dragonair

Pokes to fill the void: Dragonair, as mentioned above. If you want a plesiosaur, Lapras is always a thing.

Sunmola1/Anchorage/Grotess

This is one of the most chaotic beta evolutions out there, aside from beta Girafarig. I can see the resemblance between Sunmola1 and Anchorage to some extent--counter-shaded blue fish with two fins and a short body--but the anchor part of the evolution comes out of nowhere. Then it sporadically turns into a gulper eel, which has nothing to do with the previous two evolutions at all.

I’ve heard some people suggest that Sunmola1 basically gets dragged into the depths and turns into a deep-sea creature due to its anchor, which is a fantastic idea. However, if that’s what they were going for here it’s not really clear, and I think it could be executed much better.

Individually, Sumola1 is a little plain. Not terrible, but I think they could do something more interesting with the little head thing. Anchorage is memorable, but there’s something very un-Pokemonish about it. I think it’s just the fact that it’s basically cut in half--I keep expecting the backsprite to show its organs or something. Grotess is also a bit too plain.

It’s also worth noting that at some point, this was the evolutionary line, which is more consistent but much less interesting (save for the middle evo’s eyes, which are pretty great).

Possible reason for being scrapped: Lack of evolutionary consistency; some designs plain or not very fitting for Pokemon

Pokes to fill the void: Alomomola is a sunfish Pokemon. Sharpedo is a shark crossed with an object, and Grotess almost certainly became Huntail and Gorebyss.

Rinring/Bellboyant

These two... are pretty good. They have a simple catch--black cats with bells--and the designs are nicely executed and memorable.

If I had one complaint, it’s that they maybe seems a tad unfocused in the backend of things. They’re dark types, but have a bunch of “cutesy” moves, and it’s not clear why’d they be dark apart from being black cats. They seem to have a magical girl vibe (Bellboyant looks a bit like Luna from Sailor Moon, which is probably not a coincidence), which also has nothing to do with the bells or the dark theme. I do think that the designs themselves are fine though, and that if you just focused on the sound concept a hair more you’d have a pretty great Pokemon.

Possible reason for being scrapped: Not entirely sure, these definitely would’ve been popular. Might’ve just been a balancing thing, or it lost the dev popularity contest.

Pokes to fill the void: Skitty kind of has the same vibe as Rinring. They also remind me a bit of the Meowth line, being cat Pokemon with metal attached to them. The Purrloin line takes over the “dark-type cat” aspect.

Bomseel

I’m torn on this one. On the one hand, it’s a very plain looking Pokemon. The idea of it balancing a fireball/bomb on its nose instead of a ball is clever and memorable enough... except that it’s dependent on it being on that pose. It can’t balance that 24/7, and once it stops all you’re left with is a plain sea lion with dark points.

However, it’s fire/water. The only fire/water we have right now is a legendary, so it would be sweet to have one that’s just a regular poke. So it’s not that the concept itself is bad, using a water-based animal and adding a fire type; it’s just more that the execution is lackluster. Give this guy a hook not related to the fireball and make the seal itself more interesting and I think you’d have something here.

Possible reason for being scrapped: Lack of interesting design

Pokes to fill the void: Volcanion is our only fire/water Pokemon for now. In terms of seals/sea lions with a circus theme, Popplio is a decent enough match.

Tigrette/Electiger

Someone at Gamefreak hates tigerballs, because this line was planned for Gen 1, scrapped, then planned for Gen 2 and scrapped again. Which is strange, because while it’s not the best design it’s not bad either. It’s very very cute, and could definitely find an audience.

However, I’m not really sure what the premise is here. If it’s based on tiger clay bells, then it doesn’t really play into the bell theme much at all. And if it’s not... why is it so round? It’s not that the roundness is bad, but it would usually form the hook for this Pokemon, like it collects static electricity in its fur that makes it puff out or something. Maybe some dex descriptions would’ve made this clearer, who knows.

Also, Electiger is literally the exact same design as Tigrette, just bigger. It would either need a completely new final evolution or would need to show up as a single evo.

While that sounds harsh, I do really like this design. Fix the evo, figure out/build on the hook of it being round or bell like, and maybe refine the markings a touch and it would be pretty perfect.

Possible reason for being scrapped: Not sure. Might’ve been too similar to Pikachu (both being yellow round electric type Pokemon with zig-zag tails, and og fat Pikachu was also very round). The need to rework the evolution also might’ve turned GameFreak off of it.

Pokes to fill the void: Spheal and Rowlet are both pleasantly round. Pikachu is cute and electric themed in a similar way. In terms of tigers, Raikou is also electric-type. The exact way the stripes are done here is also very similar to Litten.

Kurstraw/Pangshi

GameFreak. GameFreak, you are telling me that we almost had a voodoo-doll Pokemon based off of Ushi-no-Toki-Mairi that evolves into a fucking jiangshi panda?? You are killing me here.

A few interesting things to note here:

Kurstraw evolves at level 1. How? Why? No idea. It could just be a placeholder, but...

The fact that Kurstraw was set to have Curse as its signature move (then called “nail”) and that it only learned this move at level 100 makes it evolving at level 1 seem intentional.

To make things more confusing, it almost seems like (and this is speculation on my part) GameFreak’s intention was to encourage players to not evolve this thing. Stats are comparable, Kurstraw only gets its signature move if you level it up to where it can’t evolve, and Kurstraw has the better moveset (getting frigging destiny bond at lv. 16, while Pangshi gets... splash (which. makes more sense when you consider it’s called “hop” in Japan but it’s still useless). If that was what they were aiming for, then that’s a really unique mechanic that would really make this poke stand out.

Design wise, Kurstraw is... well, it’s a doll with a nail rammed through it. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not very Pokemon-ish. Meanwhile, Pangshi is maybe a little too much like a Jianshi rather than being reminiscent of one, right down to the little hat. The pose, fangs, and panda colors (which resemble Jiangshi mandarin robes) are more than enough to get the hook across.

What I really love about these two are the expressions. They are just like, so dissonantly happy. Kurstraw is literally like

and Pangshi has the dead-eyed thousand-yard stare of Espurr, except unlike Espurr it looks completely and utter deranged. It looks like if this Pokemon ended up in Mystery Dungeon, it would respond to every question with “my favorite color is blood”. Amazing.

Possible reason for being scrapped: I think these two might’ve been scrapped just because they were too scary. I mean, it’s a voodoo doll impaled on a giant nail that evolves into a literal actual corpse. The implied violence was probably just a bit much for GameFreak.

The reason I think this is, beside the fact that they have fairly solid designs, good hooks, and all of their stats and moves in place, most beta Pokemon have had their premises revisited at some point. But we’ve really never gotten a voodoo doll Pokemon since this, and we definitely haven’t gotten any jiangshi Pokemon either, which suggests the problem lied in the very concept rather than the execution.

Pokes to fill the void: People say that Kurstraw was reworked into Banette, but if anyone Pokemon resembles it to be, it would actually be Mimikyu. They both have cloth bodies with drawn-on smiley faces that resemble something cuter than them and they both want to curse you for existing.

For Pangshi... well, there’s Pancham if you’re looking for tiny pandas. If you’re after a jiangshi though, you’re out of luck.

Wolfman/Warwolf

This Pokemon has a great hook. I mean, a Pokemon that wears a pelt that transforms it into a werewolf? Hell yeah. Not to mention it might be a reference to an obscure Nordic tale about people donning wolf pelts to turn into wolves for ten days.

Design wise, it... well, Wolfman looks almost exactly like Venonat. I’m not the only one who sees this, right?

That aside, I think the idea could be played up a little more. Wolfman is fine, save for its Venonat-ishness, but Warwolf doesn’t do much for me, basically just being a larger version with claws and fangs. If the idea is that it turns into a werewolf by wearing the pelt, what if its evolution looked somewhat like a wolf? Or better yet, the actually body of the thing changes to fill the wolf skin more, so it looks like its a part of it? That would really elevate this Pokemon to a new level.

Possible reason for being scrapped: I’d guess that it’s the same problem as Kurstraw and Pangshi--too scary. I mean, that is a dead pelt of some kind, which means that it killed and skinned some kind of Pokemon, and that’s not getting into questions of what Pokemon they got that from.

It’s also worth noting that when we did finally get a werewolf Pokemon via Lycanroc, it was minus the pelt concept.

Pokes to fill the void: Lycanroc as our werewolf Pokemon. In terms of design, Venonat is very similar as noted above. And something about it really reminds me of Snorunt, being little critters with glowing eyes that wear a cloak of some kind and live in the cold (this line was ice-type).
