Killiehuntly ‘Killiehuntly’s' Danish owners have transformed this 17th-century farmhouse (just a caber's throw from ‘Aviemore’ in the Scottish Highlands) into a haven of Scandinavian style - with farm to fork dining for famished guests after a day hiking the hills or riding the trails. ‘Killiehuntly’ is nestled in the Cairngorms on its own 4,000-acre Highland estate approached via a rough dirt track. Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povslen and his wife Anne Storm Pedersen have - with the help of interior designer Ruth Kramer - created a bastion of Nordic style in the Scottish Highlands. They dubbed the look ‘Scandi-Scot’. That tracks. Floors are flagstone and bare boards. The palette soft greys and neutrals. Shuttered sash windows are framed with white drapes. A large grey sofa sidles up to a roaring fire opposite an old chair Storm Pedersen picked up at an auction and recovered in sheepskin. Fleeces are strewn over Danish design icon ‘Bamse’ chairs and the contemporary ‘Orkney’ chairs in the dining room. The four rooms are named after native trees: ‘Alder’, ‘Birch’, ‘Elm’ and ‘Oak’. There is no phone, no minibar and no television. There's a pad for doodling at a desk by the window and you can pack your picnic in the rucksack on a hook by the door. Killiehuntly ‘Killiehuntly’ is an Highland stone farmhouse dating back to 1603. Having being stripped back to its bare architectural bones, the ‘Killiehuntly Farmhouse’ is deliberately intimate, almost poetic: open farmhouse kitchen and dining, ample fireplace-snugs, well-turned books and curated designer furnishings - all framed by the old-style sash windows showcasing the drama of nature in every direction. ‘Killiehuntly’ is on a Highland estate and is still a working farm with its own kitchen garden. On the menu is wild venison, roast guinea fowl, Scottish salmon and salt-baked brown trout from the loch, served in the dining room at the big communal table, house-party style. Breakfast is dished up in the modern farmhouse kitchen complete with Aga. There's homemade granola with fruit compote and yoghurt, freshly baked bread, homemade jams and farm-fresh eggs from their own hens. Lunch is a “piece” (Scottish packed lunch, normally a sandwich and slab of homemade cake). Still feeling peckish?
