Eddie: Just so you know, I don’t have a hall pass, but if I did I would at least show it to you
Steve: You’re not?? In school?? Why would you have a hall pass???
Eddie: *thinks about it*
Eddie: Ohhhhhh. It seems I have made a mistake
Steve: *still confused* What did you do this time?
This is a conversation that happens fifteen minutes after Eddie asks who else Steve has as a hall pass other than Mr. Rogers and Steve, who still thinks this is a very intense conversation about the hall passes he uses in his classroom (which are just rulers with quotes written on them), is like, “One of them is unknown.”
“How is one of them unknown?!”
“Let’s stop talking to each other. You’re annoying me.”
So, they’re currently not talking.
They are sitting on opposite ends of the couch in the living room. Steve is on his iPad, an episode of The Big Bang Theory is playing on the TV, and Eddie is sitting there. Staring. Thinking.
He’s thinking about all the times Steve got jealous of fans thinking he’s hot or about the time he accidently brushed lips with an actress when he was giving her a congratulatory kiss on the cheek and she moved her head. Steve didn’t answer any of his calls for a week. He thinks all this and then he says in a voice that is prim and haughty, “Just so you know. I don’t have a hall pass, but if I did. I would at least show them to you.”
Steve, the human embodiment of that confused white monkey meme, is just like, “Why would you have a hall pass?????”
“Why do you have one!”
“Because? I’m? A? Teacher??????” Steve asks. “You. Don’t. Work. In. A. School!!”
Eddie opens his mouth and then closes it. Then he says, “Oh.”
“Ohhhhh,” He says again and then cringes because he’s going to have to explain the last half hour of their lives. He gives Steve an apologetic look, “I appear to have…made a mistake.”
“What did you do.”
Eddie kinda resigns himself to the fact that’s going to have explain his thought process and Steve is definitely going to tell Robin about it, and Jesus, if Erica finds out…. Or.
He could fake an asthma attack.
He is very tempted to fake an asthma attack.
“Eddie, what did you do??”

Weekend Update 03/10/2024
Made it another week Nerdie.
That I did. I believe today is Sunday. Too much time in this chair. I think I slept in it before. Too many times.
Nerdie, don't you have a bed?
I do, I don't always make it there. I've usually zoned out and nodded off, the wake up when my neck hurts. 👀 I'm not always writing either, just thinking sometimes.
Couldn't you think in bed Nerdie?
I could, but I don't. That sounds like a good idea. My ideas aren't always great. But I did have a few this week.
Tumblr media
My March Spring Prompts continue. I was able to do ten of them without repeating a character! 🤗 This upcoming week we'll see some Pedro peeps come back. Key words: gas station sushi, angst, oil and bath. Remember this is Nerdie 😎, it could be any and everything, but my prompts are mature and not explicit. I do write about some heavy subjects, fluff, a few giggles, and have some innuendos, but my main masterlist is 78% smut so just go there.
The WIP I’d been mentioning for the last few weeks or months (could be either) is finished and posted : Diddle your Dieter to Disco. My first Dieter smut actually which is hilarious at least to me. 🤣 The rest of his Masterlist is fairly fluffy. I would check the warnings on it, I put a lot in it. 👀
Part Two of my series The Lake Between Us is up. Make sure to read the warnings. Ezra introduction has a lot going on. It's an AU so he has both arms but that doesn't mean I didn't torture him other ways. 👀 I do love that ya'll love the taglist name "Taste-testers of Ezra's gumbo." 😆
I finally wrote the follow up to He told me his name called She made me feel. I think I enjoy mentally torturing Pedro characters at this point. Poor Din is so anxious and touch-starved. As always with Din = HANDS. A Nerdie staple. This is The Way.
Now for everyone's favorite (and mine): Fic recommendations!!! (Yes I did type and do a little yell, fanfics are serious. Pfft.) 😄

A New Home by @charethcutestory02 (Frankie Morales x Benny Miller) Budding feelings. 🤗
Special shout out to Ms. Payday - Le Poet and lover of da words: @maggiemayhemnj They seek her out, have brunches and nightcaps. It's what all writers long for. She checked in on me along with @megamindsecretlair @angelofsmalldeath-codeine @magpiepills @ramblers-lets-get-ramblin and @lady-bess
I've been not as active - mainly due to work, school, and the insomnia. But still writing. 😄 priorities. lol
New appreciation for Javier Pena. well not new, re-newed. Maybe am working on a few things. None are good, none are final. Still need polishing. Also need to give Javi G's outline another look. I might...👀 have a chapter for him this week. I hope. @goodwithcheese was pleased with this. @undercoverpena was Luke-warm. I think she thought I was taking something, but if Javi P has shown us anything, sharing is caring. 😘
Tumblr media
Stay well, sleep in your bed (unless you're planning not to) and be hydrated,
Love Nerdie 💕

top ten favorite Oxventure episodes because I feel like it let’s go. og Oxventure only otherwise you know Lampblack Wedding would be top of my list, followed by whoever’s first to make a Victoria McClary supercut.
Heist Society: Fancy party is my be-all end-all favorite ttrpg trope. I have watched this one so many times I have portions of it memorized. It’s the first episode I ever showed to my partner. I enacted Bear Down Protocol in my own campaign.
Bride or Die: (gestures to all of my oxventure tag) Do I need to explain.
Watch Out!: Very long and very silly. Love to watch Luke go, and the others playing along. Love that Luke based it on a museum he knows and loves. Love just the entire concept of Hengist. and. Merilwen’s Microwave :)
Dine Hard: World’s wildest plan goes off without a hitch when that plan didn’t even have a defined goal. Luke and Jane roleplaying at the absolute top of their game. and. Liliana hot. I know she doesn’t melt a man til start of next episode but extra points for that anyway.
Squid Pro Quo: I Was There, Gandalf. The spiraling insanity of Dob’s social engineering feels like he’s the one succumbing to eldritch madness and absolutely nothing could be funnier. Peak shenanigans that not even the players are in control of.
Wedded Redemption: Who would’ve thought Aubrey the tabaxi would be so endearing! Hilarious to learn that Harry McEntire ended up there because the only request he’d ever made of his agent was to do a D&D show! Despite what Andy says I think the title pun is great! And guess what! This one’s also a fancy party!
Court in the Act: I will never be over the fact that Corazon egoed his way into being arrested. It was only supposed to be Dob, it was very explicitly supposed to be Dob, but Corazon made a bit of drawing attention away from Dob and Johnny immediately adapted the setting to accommodate. The bit about replacing their nooses with pasta makes me crave udon to an unreasonable degree.
A Fête Worse Than Death: Body!!! Swap!!! Johnny summed up the feeling with, “That’s right folks, we’re doing it!” Also, Corazon holding the Seal Gaiman plushie to ransom, and then just holding it, 10/10.
Exhibition Impossible: Can you believe it, another fancy party! Corazon does cool pirate shit and looks cool doing it. Dob briefly attempts PvP before straight up walking away from a man begging for his life. Egbert brains an old man with almost no prompting. Seal Gaiman is born.
Tower Rangers: Liliana :) The different levels of the tower, the different kinds of Clonebert, and the plan to create infighting are all interesting and entertaining. I love the inventive circumnavigation of all Johnny’s expectations and I love that they do it all just to avoid Liliana as much as possible, because she’s that fucking scary. Cloud of Daggers :)

Are you still taking requests for the first kiss prompt? Can I request "well i guess that answers my question." With Darman Skirata? Him saying the first kiss prompt because I’d be waiting forever for him to make the first move. If you have time to write it great. If not it’s no biggie.
Thanks. ☺️
Hihi! I am indeed! Thank you for your request!
Well, I guess that answers my question
Summary: Your long time crush on Darman is becoming harder and harder to hide...and he's finally going to do something about it.
Pairing: Darman Skirata x Reader
Word Count: 1100
Warnings: Fluff
A/N: I had to google information on Darman, as this is my first time writing him, and I've only ever read one fic with him in it. So I hope this is okay.
Divider by saradika
Tumblr media
You’re beginning to think that Darman Skirata has it out for you specifically.
Oh. He’s nothing but polite when it comes to talking to you. And he’s never done anything to make you think that he actively dislikes you…in fact, he often goes out of his way to make sure that you’re comfortable and that you don’t need anything.
The problem is that he’s so stupidly charming, and so stupidly handsome that you want to kiss his stupid face and tangle your hands in his stupid hair.
The problem is that he’s haunting your every dream and your every waking hour, and you’re losing your damned mind.
And your friends aren’t helping. No. They’re all like, “You should tell him that you have a crush on him! What’s the worst thing that can happen?” Well, the worst thing is that he could hear you, and then he would know, and you’d sooner bury yourself alive than put yourself out there like that.
No. You will just have to make do with admiring him from afar, and when/if the war ever ends, maybe then you can take him out for dinner or something. Maybe.
But for now…well, for now you have work to do. And today’s work is-
“Inventory,” Darman says lazily, and you scowl at the datapad in your arms, then around the massive storage room, and then at Darman himself.
“Why am I always doing inventory?” You ask, “Why don’t you do inventory?”
“You’re a better counter than anyone else,” Darman replies, a small smirk playing on his lips.
“What, the Kaminoans didn’t teach you how to count higher than 10?” You ask snarkily.
“There are numbers higher than 10?” Darman asks innocently.
You grab a package of sponges off a shelf and fling it at him, “You think you’re funny, don’t you?”
He catches the sponges, “I think I’m hilarious,” He throws the sponges back at you and you barely manage to catch them.
“You’re not.” You counter.
“Maybe you just don’t have a sense of humor,” Darman replies as he drags a ladder from the corner and sets it up against the shelf.
“What are you doing?”
“What? Did you think you were going to be working alone?” He asks, as he rests his arms on the ladder, “No such luck. I’m helping.”
“Oh. Joy.” You mutter under your breath. The last thing you want is to be trapped in an enclosed space with the one guy you’ve been crushing on for months.
It’s terrible. The worst day ever.
Still, you do have work to do, so you heave out a silent sigh and move to sit on the floor so you can start your part of the inventory. You try to ignore the way that your skin prickles when he stares at you.
Three hours later, you’re laid out on your stomach trying to reach something under the shelf, “Son of a motherfucking-” You hiss under your breath.
“You know-” You yelp, and your arm slams, painfully, into the bottom of the shelf, “-it would be easier to just ask me to move the shelf.” Darman says from where he’s standing over you.
“I forgot you were in here,” You admit, only half honestly.
He rolls his eyes, and nudges you with his boot, “Get up.”
You shimmy out from under the shelf, and stand, only realizing how close he was standing when you fully straightened and you saw that you were standing chest to chest. “A-ah…sorry.” You stammer as your face flames red.
His brows creep up his forehead slightly, and then a small smirk crosses his face, “Huh.”
“Huh? What huh?” You ask as you take a step back.
His smirk becomes something incredibly cocky, “Don’t worry about it, mesh’la.” Darman carefully slides the shelf back, wincing at the loud scrape of metal on concrete. “There, that should do it.”
“Huh, yeah. Thanks.” Darman doesn’t say anything and you look up at his face, there’s something almost calculating in his gaze and it’s making you a little nervous, “Dar?”
“Hm?” He blinks, “Oh, yeah. No problem. Just ask if you need any more help.”
“Uh…okay?” You watch, bewildered, as he crosses back to the other side of the room, and then you shake your head and turn back to your project.
Less than fifteen minutes later there’s an audible click of a door being locked, and a hum as the lights dimmed to their late night setting. You look up at the ceiling with a frown.
You hear Darman walk over to the door, and you turn when you hear the familiar warning sound indicating that the door was sealed. “We’ve been locked in, apparently.” Darman says, sounding very unconcerned.
“What? That doesn’t make any sense.” You reply as you push to your feet.
“I’m sure they’ll figure it out eventually,” Darman sits on one of the steps of the ladder, and folds his arms across his chest, “There’s no need to worry.” He pauses and then stands, “Although, now this does give us a chance to talk.”
“Talk? What do we need to talk abou-” Your words are cut off by the feel of his hands against your cheek. His thumbs rub soothing circles against your cheekbones, and you release a, frankly embarrassing, whine from low in your throat as his hand drifts to settle on the back of your neck.
Something delighted crosses his face, “Well,” He murmurs, his breath warm against your skin, “I guess that answers my question.” And then his lips are against yours, warm and slightly chapped.
What starts off as a chaste kiss very quickly becomes heated, with Darman’s teeth and tongue nipping and soothing and silently demanding that you submit to him, and he presses you against the wall, pinning you in place with his hips.
When he finally breaks the kiss, you’re breathless and pink, and he looks deeply, deeply satisfied, “Dinner.” Darman says.
“...what?” Your brain doesn’t quite want to work just yet, still feeling a little bit fuzzy from the kiss.
“Dinner,” He repeats, “Tonight. My quarters.”
“Like…like a date?” You ask.
“Well, I don’t kiss just anyone like that, ner cyare.” Darman purrs out, delight growing as your face flames red.
“We’re still stuck in here.” You squeak.
He pauses, “Oh. Right.” Darman pulls his comm out of his hip pouch, “You can turn the lights back on and unlock the door. I got what I needed.” He says into the comm after pressing a button.
Your jaw drops.
Darman winks at you, and kisses your jaw. “Back to work, cyare.”

Secretary! Marinette part 10
I got sick and I'm not sure if I can finish a new chapter this week so I hope a prompt is okay for now! This prompt is going to explore how Marinette is going to help the bats without outing herself as a miraculous holder!!!
I'm thinking of making Marinette use both the butterfly and fox miraculi to help them as her superhero persona
I'd like to think that she would use the butterflies to tail the bats as a security detail.
If one of the bats needed assistance she would send her illusions to help them.
The bats are seriously paranoid at first but after she helps them more they decided that somehow they have received a guardian angel instead.
Jason was the first to receive such help. After his return as red hood, he was cornered by Joker and his goons. Marinette immediately akumatized Jason and manage to calm him down and give him added strength to fight back while also sending her illusions to help. He reports back to Batman and Nightwing.
At first, Batman was unsure about the unexpected helper. He was quite miffed with an unknown magic user in Gotham and didn't appreciate it. But they did help Jason and protect him against Joker so he had to begrudgingly thanked them for that.
Next who got help is Tim because reckless boi decided to volunteer himself to be the new robin. Marinette saved him personally from a very dangerous situation and that was the first time when the Batfam meets her face to face.
Marinette told them that she is the great guardian of the miraculous order. She also kind of alluded the fact that she was the one who helped Bruce Wayne's secretary to find Jason and as the result find Damian as well.
Batman contacted Diana to make sure it was legit. Diana vouches for Marinette.
Dick is pumped! Like a magical guardian angel girl?? LET'S GOOOOOO!!! He wasted no time but to badger her with questions through her butterflies. Marinette got fed up with it that she sometimes didn't tail him with her butterfly which made him mistake some random butterfly for hers.
Cue the hilarious conversation between Mari n Jason.
J: Is that one of your butterflies?
M: nope.
J: so, he's chasing around an ordinary butterfly?
M: yep.
J: *videotapes it* this is going to go viral. Heheh.
Marinette teams up with Alfred. She lends Duusu to him so if she needs a back up the man can send an amok to help. They are a wonderful team together. The batfamily doesn't found out about this after a long time. Why? 1. You don't question Alfred. 2. You also don't question Marinette.
Marinette kind of became known as the Guardian Angel of Gotham or Gotham's Nightingale. She decided she should do something to reduce the unlucky miasma around Gotham, so she starts with Arkham. She uses the butterfly miraculous and sings the healing hymn that Tikki had taught her. It works for some of the inmates but some are too far gone for her help. This is why she got the title Gotham's Nightingale.

So here’s an interesting prompt, let’s say during one of Danny’s adventures through time he saves someone and ends up telling them about his life and the troubles he’s faced. Turns out whoever this person was is an author who wrote up Danny’s tale as a fairy tale about a boy that lives between worlds, a hero who appears at various points in time whenever he’s a needed, a hero who’s single-handedly faced down gods and won. Basically, this person ends up making Danny a literal fairy tale hero. Let’s say this fairy tale becomes famous and that multiple JL members have heard and have been inspired by this story. Here’s the thing though, no one believes it’s real. So imagine their surprise when this literal hero of legend comes through a portal to face down whatever ghost the league is facing. However, the funny thing is that Danny was never aware of this story. Danny’s used to people being distrustful of Phantom, so you could imagine how confused he is when multiple members of the league treat him with respect despite his age. What do you think?
Oooh~ Now that would be really funny, especially if it's from Danny's POV and he's just watching all these heroes act super incredulous around him and maybe show some childish wonder with: "Oh my gosh, you're real?" Cue starry eyes. I actually think it would be really cute if Danny was around the same age as canon (so around 14 years old), and he feels kinda new to the hero gig despite all the wild adventures he's gone on. So to see all these heroes that he respects and looks up to, now turning around and saying how they looked up to him? I think that has some great potential for really fluffy moments. After the confusion, of course. lol
I could definitely see him being really confused at the beginning if he wasn't aware of it before. It would be funny if he thinks- at some point- that they're referring to a different version of himself from another timeline and/or dimension before they clarify that nope! That's all Danny. The confusion would be hilarious (if we ignore how sad it is that Danny can't seem to comprehend that people actually respect him, but no! I promised myself I would not use the angst brain for this one-)
Overall? 10/10, would read a fic of it.

Surge the Tenrec singlehandedly utterly obliterated the Sonic fandom. She became everyone’s new blorbo the minute she appeared in the comics. She spawned massive waves of AUs based solely around herself, including like 10 from me alone. She became the one canon Sonic character who would utter a great deal of meme lines. She could say “I am hilarious and you will make memes out of every panel I’m in,” and it would be in-character. She CANONICALLY became an UNDERAGE DRUG ADDICT by use of Eggman’s glorified bong, which itself became an instrument of angst used to launch 25 different AUs, including my own. Then, after she blew her own brain out in order to KILL SONIC “for a few seconds,” and Kit said what we were all thinking, the two of them left, refusing to elaborate or even establish what Surge’s own mental state will be going forward. And one issue later, the only person who remembers their existence in-universe is Whisper, who we THOUGHT had just been there as a plot device for Surge’s bong and wouldn’t be affected in the long run. But Whisper WAS affected, and THAT leads to her BREAKING UP WITH TANGLE, leaving Surge as the last lesbian standing. Even before all this, even without her story, Surge launched a massive fleet of gay crack ships, and enabled EVERYONE who made jokes about Sonic falling in love with anyone who punched him. She dethroned Tangle as the most butch and scrappy Sonic girl, and Whisper as the most traumatized character. Her existence dethroned the Metal Virus as the darkest Sonic story ever. Her arc may or may not have been a thin veil for the writers to openly rage against Sega’s iron-fisted mandates. Her actions and words turned a significant portion of the fandom AGAINST THE PROTAGONIST, not just in the situation, but AS A CHARACTER. Surge has sparked an ONGOING WAR over whether Sonic’s “anarcho-pacifism” is a character flaw, a personality trait, or just bad writing, AND over whether the writers or Sega are to blame. And the fans will likely never fully recover from ANY of this, NOR WILL SEGA ATTEMPT TO LET IDW RECTIFY THE ISSUES IT ALL CAUSED.
It will be YEARS before another arc or character in Sonic, comics or otherwise, is able to replicate the high Surge the Tenrec gave the fandom, IF EVER.
AND THIS ISN’T EVEN INCLUDING KIT, HIS OWN IMPACT, AND THEIR DYNAMIC.
And even as the comic moves on without them, they linger in our minds, prompting fanfics and AUs. Just like how Surge and Kit will never be truly free from the programming Starline gave them, WE, the Sonic fandom, will never be truly free from the brainROT Surge and Kit gave US.

I found it hilarious that Jojo has been loosely touting a Taylor Swift parallel when it comes to Mew and his relationship with Top (and it's obviously a surface level joke) but if you actually listen to the songs in Reputation and Lover...the storytelling is 100% Ray. It's finding love at your lowest. The self-loathing, seeking love as salvation, blowing up good things in fear and realizing too late, secret rendezvous where neither knows what game is really being played, finding their purported last love in a world that hated them--who is all of these things but Ray?
The Taylor Swift thing is mostly just an entertaining observation for me but the thing that the thematic elements and imagery in her music prompted me to re-think was that famous final scene in episode 10. While you watch Ray's eyes morph the therapist into Sand, there's a stoic golden glow to imaginary-Sand as he sits in the therapist's chair like a throne, as though you've walked into a temple dedicated to him--a temple Ray has dedicated to him. It's almost like Ray has always seen Sand as a god.
Throughout the confession that follows, Imaginary-Sand is mostly emotionless, minimally responding to Ray as Ray maintains an incredibly reverent face despite breaking down in tears. The apology contains so many reused phrases as though Ray were reciting some sort of prayer, and even while sitting in the sofa, the camera kind of points up at Sand rather than at the even level he is really at when you see things through Ray's vision. Finally, when Ray gets on his knees and imaginary-Sand appears to console him, it's not clearly romantic or friendly. There's a godliness to it. The point is, the whole thing just felt akin to a religious awakening to me. And then I realized I felt those same feelings emanating from Ray in the caravan, in the music room, at the party, drunk in the parking lot, on the rooftop, in the kitchen(s), when they wake up together for the first time...
I don't know what this means for the relationship Ray and Sand have and whether it will ever really be healthy, but it certainly made for poetic cinema. Has Sand eclipsed the unattainable Mew? Has he become the unconditional heavenly father (I say, mostly in jest)? Another point of consideration is that Ray always seems to be wearing a cross. Just saying.
Anyway this theory is pretty out there, and in any case, it's less about proving the idea and more about seeing what others thought about it as a vantage point of discussion, and whether it colors how Ray, and Sand and Ray as a couple, are interpreted.
Those are such great observations! Taylor Swift's lyricism is so fascinating and complex to me, and I agree that there are so many lyrics that could easily apply to Ray.
In my opinion, Ray is easily the most complicated character in this show. It's no wonder they chose Khaotung to play him because there are so many feelings he has to work through, especially in these emotionally-charged scenes. When the camera pans behind Ray's head and Sand appears, Ray slowly looks up at him with tears in his eyes. That first moment when he meets eyes with him and says his name just speaks to how agonizing this confrontation is for Ray, because he's confronting himself through the image of Sand. This entire scene is the acceptance of just how much Sand means to Ray, just how badly Ray has screwed up yet again, and just how much gratitude Ray has for Sand in his heart.
Your analysis of the religious aspects of the scene is so compelling. The golden coloring behind Sand echoes a lot of what @thewayuarent has analyzed about the contrast between cold blue lighting and warm gold lighting for both Sand and Ray. Also interesting your point about how the camera is slightly angled up at Sand rather than at eye-level. Originally I wouldn't think too much of this but contrasted with the shots of Ray at eye-level, it seems super intentional.
"Religious awakening" is a great way of describing it. There's been a lot of discussion about Ray putting Mew on a pedestal and idolizing him, but I think we see a similar kind of reverence being displayed here, but with some notable differences. With Mew, it felt like he was always something distant, something Ray wanted but could never quite touch. But in this scene, we have Ray facing Sand, on his knees for him, embracing him. Despite the whole thing being imaginary, it feels very real in a way I struggle to articulate. There's a worshipping aspect, I agree, but there's also a realism in the way Ray is very honestly considering his emotions. With Mew, I'd argue those feelings of idolization were allowed to grow out of Ray's fantasy, but with Sand, it isn't something Ray has blown up in his head. My main point being--I don't think it's necessarily suggesting an unhealthy power imbalance with Ray as the worshipper and Sand as the godly figure (in the way we saw with Ray and Mew), though I think this scene does an excellent job of emphasizing how Ray views Sand as someone honestly and purely good.
Another reason I think Khao delivers this so well is that he speaks through his eyes in every one of those scenes you mention. He sees all of Sand's goodness, but I don't think he's directly confronted his own behavior until this moment. Yes, he's apologized and yes he's realized that he was in the wrong. But here he is laying it all out on the table. Following the topic of religion, it almost feels like a confession. In Ray's imagination, this is a space where he can expel all of his feelings to the image of Sand. It's almost better that Sand can't react here (seeing as he's imaginary) because it brings the focus back to Ray. Even though Ray is crying to Sand and about Sand, it's all a reflection of his own flaws in their relationship and otherwise.

"In hindsight, perhaps not leaving an AOE Hero behind in the parking lot might have been a poor play." - All Might. I love Kunieda (God wish we had him shown off before), but seeing him be the only Villain of the Second War to easily mop up the Heros on his side (No Nomu to boot) is both hilarious and kind of sad on poor Fat Gum's part...and really the other Villains too, especially those who had a Nomu to help them.
In fairness, the parking lot fight was essentially 'we don't know who tf is getting left behind so have to make do' for the Heroes so the odds were against him...but like was there really no one who can do hard hitting distance? Like, Shindo or even Joke's power ? Not hating on the chapter, seeing Toru and Aoyma beat ass is great, but it does make you wonder. Also Kunieda's Quirk is maing me question why he wasn't sectioned off as well if he wipe out an entire squad of Heroes with ease? Are the other Jailbreakers this strong? And do Hagakure/Aoyama still have Villains to beat since there's no word on Kunieda's gang beeted
(Prompted by this post.)
Well in fairness to the villains in every other battlefront to this war; their forces, outside their only real big recruitment effect we saw in Spinner’s mob, seemed to number around roughly 200. Meanwhile the pro heroes (for whom even the average no name is likely on Aizawa’s level and beats 10 no-name villains for breakfast), numbered at half what they had for the 1st war. We never got hard numbers for the heroes, but that’s probably anywhere from 500 to 5000; and if nothing else is at least enough to beat ~57,500 villains and a handful of High-End Nomu. It’s impressive how many villains lasted 5 minutes, never mind how long Toga was active before she was sent to Gunga.
(Of course acknowledging all this kinda kills any tension in this war because it’s clear the villains never could’ve won from the get-go. Even if AFO got control of Tomura (a fool’s errand in itself) he still probably couldn’t beat that many heroes alone. And he very much is now alone.)
Anyway though, looking at all this, it's quite shocking for the clean-up team to have gotten nearly beaten so badly. Best explanation I can give is that the heroes pushing everything through Warp Gates were incredibly sloppy, and then left in a hurry through those same gates to get to the big fights with the big villains. This would leave behind a lot more villains for the clean-up crew that was supposed to outnumber them to deal with. Which is doubly bad when, as you said, they had no idea who they were fighting. Kunieda's just the one to last the longest with those far more even odds in play thanks to his experience & strong quirk.
That seems like the kind of shortsighted mistake I’d expect from the pro heroes anyway. That's not too uncommon in this war, I mean did you know they sent the water hand guy from USJ to the aquarium? It didn't matter much of course, but they clearly only focused on/prepared for so many villains.

Top 10 Albums of 2023!
Tumblr media
This was all supposed to work out differently. As i recall from the now long distant past, my original plan was to do a countdown where i put up one post a day throughout December. However, I got Covid on December 1st and that plan immediately became lame and useless. After that, my assumption was basically that i wouldn't be able to do any of this, but i got better more quickly than i'd anticipated and found myself working on these reviews in bits as the month has gone on. So, having rushed through all the the song blurbs that i wanted to do, here i am on New Year's Eve with a more or less finished Top 10 albums to put up.
The only problem is that there are ten quite lengthy reviews here and the vibe is already pretty tl:dr. But tbh that's fine: there really is only my girlfriend who ever reads everything (and i believe her, trust is what love is all about after all) so for anyone looking at this and thinking blimey, that's a lot of text, my advice is: you don't have to read any of it. Just look at the albums, scan thru to see if it sounds like something you might like and give one or two of them a listen if that looks like the case. The words are really just to keep me occupied but i'd like to hope that someone likes some of the records.
I said yesterday that i would reveal what the best one is and so I am now delivering on that important promise. The best one is Scarlet by Doja Cat. Anyone who follows me on whatever platform already knows that the best one is Scarlet by Doja Cat. Don't make me say it again.
Barbie - The Album
Few people have seemed much interested in the Barbie soundtrack, other than the punters who kept it atop the compilations chart for four months. I, as ever, channel the spirit of the populous. The sound is basically 80s synth pop updated for a modern audience  - the likes of Haim and Ava Max slot in predictably well - but its the extra dimensions created by how the artists interact with the film that provide some of its more interesting aspects. Sam Smith’s Man I Am reflects a surprisingly LGBTQ Ken despite protestations (certainly its "I'm not gay bro, but..." T-shirt is prompting a lot of questions already answered by the shirt), while Billie Eilish dwelling on life as a manufactured product makes for interesting and uncomfortable parallels in What Was I Made For. Mark Ronson’s plasticky production suits its subject to a tee, further cementing the conceptual unity of the project.
Star turns abound throughout the album as A-listers like Dua Lipa and Lizzo bring their best games alongside some terrific and unlikely downcard cameos. What Was I Made For? and Dance The Night were both deserved #1s, but the pacey pop punk of GAYLE’s Butterflies and Dominic Fike’s breezy, hook laden Hey Blondie are as much highlights as any of the bigger names here. Special mention should be made for Ryan Gosling’s I’m Just Ken, a blockbuster 70s rock number that, whilst puncturing the wider stylistic template, is batshit and hilarious enough to more than justify its place as well as netting him a surprise hit too. The quality lapses once or twice (Tame Impala in particular are bloody awful) but by the time Ava fires the final laser I’m generally happy to go back and start all over again. With banger after banger here, my verdict is in: the Barbie soundtrack is *Charli voice* HOT!
Claire Rosinkranz - Just Because
While this has been a year that I’ve gotten more fully into pop, it took a while for me to find many new albums that I’ve been interested in. This may partly be to do with me clinging to an idea that LPs ought to be substantial beyond having good hooks and charm. In truth, all I needed to do was revert to my indiepop training, where bands have never knowingly been fussed about having any great weightiness. But even so, it took Just Because to make it clear to me that no, you really don’t need any grand vision at all: a high number of great if frothy pop songs will do just fine. It’s a record which bounces from banger to banger in an endearingly sunny style, with each tune so catchy that their lightness becomes a strength rather than a weakness.
Rosinkranz’s voice seems to mark her out as one of the many Billie clones who populate the current pop scene but her musical ambitions are both simpler and more instantly engaging. Not yet 20, her songs have an element of schoolyard whispers which add a welcome silliness here and there, but she also plays with the intensity of youthful emotions to make them a little heartrending even as she goofs off. Highlights include Dreamer, a break up song where the vocal makes it clear that she’s far from as done as she says she is, and Wes Anderson, which offers some sombre advice but packages it in a song so sweet that you’d never know. But in spite of all this it makes no end of year lists (well, maybe just the one), being merely a lovable set of songs that are very hard to forget. Need it be more? I don't believe so.
Doja Cat - Scarlet
Mired in discourse throughout the year, Doja Cat still found time to make a chart topping single (Paint The Town Red) that took the world by storm and a cracking album which, sadly, did not. Scarlet was in my opinion the better of the two: largely ditching the afrobeat pop of Planet Her, Doja staked her claim as an old skool rapper and brought it off pretty well, mixing hard rhyming with her more scattershot pop delivery and sounding entirely comfortable wherever she landed. While flitting musically between modern RnB and neo-soul grooves, her subject matter was largely taken up by how much she hated her fans, a bold strategy that found her shedding support even as blistering tracks like Fuck The Girls shaped up as some of my favourites of the year.
Whilst I’ve found myself uncomfortable with both the company that she keeps and the views which she may or may not subscribe to (i feel safe in saying that she's a right wing edgelord but i suspect that’s the least of it), Scarlet is such a good album that I’ve found myself, if not making excuses for her, then at least deftly navigating around my distaste in order to keep listening to it. While Agora Hills often reminded me how serious she is about her scumbag of a boyfriend, it’s still a song that can submerge me in its beauty entirely; while some of the complaints from her online audience are less easily dismissed than others, it’s more comfortable just to think about the morons calling her a devil worshiper, especially when she mocks them so wickedly on the elegant Skull And Bones. Am I the problem? Maybe I am: it’s a place I often find myself in with hip hop, where faves are frequently problematic and exceptions beg to be made. As such, I can not wholeheartedly recommend this record to people who might want to take a principled stand against some of her bullshit. I can only say that, as a musical talent, there was no one better all year.
Lana Del Rey - Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard?
After 2021’s fairly middling brace of albums, Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd always felt like it was going to be a return to form and this time the faithful were not disappointed. It was another epic and sprawling record which unfolded like a cross between The Bible and a 50s musical. While changeable in style, ranging from hammy country ballads to trap beats and beyond, the thing that springs to mind most often is the Great American Songbook, as Lana takes the melodramatic grandeur of those standards and soaks them in her own messy and complicated worldview. This draws in family, romance, the future, her relationship with religion and how it all scrappily fits together, ranging widely and wildly across 75 extraordinary minutes.
Much of the album feels like it’s being broadcast from a kind of dreamworld, although one that overlays with reality neatly enough. Lana’s dismissive “if you want some basic bitch go to the Beverly Centre and find her” line undercuts the mood on the otherwise lush and evocative Sweet but the impact is hilarious rather than jarring, a perfect marriage of the strange and mundane. In contrast, the brooding A&W initially brings that realism to a far more uncomfortable level, before goofing off wonderfully in the second half in a way that only Lana ever really dares to do. Much of the record feels like it's creating its own language, as key phrases (“let the light in”, “when you know, you know”) are repeated and musical themes come back around in strange modulations. All in all, while perhaps less satisfying as a pop record than Norman Fucking Rockwell, Did You Know… feels like her most complete statement on a personal level yet, whilst still working well within the broader world that she’s spent over a decade constructing.
Mitski - The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We
Despite liking the odd song or two, I have until now been largely immune to Mitski over the full length of an album. But The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We has a much more organic sound than I’m used to hearing from her, well adrift from the polished guitar rock of her big 10s records. Instead, it takes many of its cues from classic folk and country, occasionally lush and expansive, often determinedly sombre but always at a distance from the areas where she’s generally been at home. Opener Bug Like An Angel is a brooding scene setter, where Mitski unveils the terse and grumpy presence we will grow familiar with over the next half hour. The main elements of the album are already in place - the spare instrumentation; Mitski’s extraordinary voice, hard and intransigent but still full of yearning; the occasional, overwhelming interjections from the wings. It all creates a distinctive atmosphere, extremely intense but intimate too: we’re allowed into Mitski’s world but there’s a lot to take in.
Lyrically, the songs are both heavily allusive and extremely personal, like hearing ancient parables told by the characters from the story. Surprise hit My Love Mine All Mine seems to sit apart as a relatively standard love song but a closer listen reveals deeper layers; the placing of her love as something independent from its object makes it feel more of a piece with the album’s other enigmas. At a time where Mitski seemed to be cooling on being a rock star, The Land Is Inhospitable adds a new twist to her long musical journey, seemingly presenting a more intimate portrait while in fact retaining most of her essential mystery. As an album, it really is quite something: what that is I’m less certain of but I like it regardless.
Olivia Rodrigo - Guts
Tho I wouldn't have called myself a hater (I don’t think I would have been bothered enough), I don't really like Olivia’s all conquering debut Sour, which I thought a bit too one-note and overpopulated with slushy ballads. But by the time Guts came around I was open to listening again, drawn in by its excellent singles and primed for a different experience. Vampire, the best of them and more or less of this year, was a fantastic example of taking something that Olivia is clearly very accomplished at (the grand piano lament) and then, rather than running that into the ground, instead using it as a springboard for an entirely different idea. Get Him Back and Bad Idea Right hark back to earlier guitar based tracks like Brutal, but on Guts they form a much more substantive part of the album, cementing its brand of addictive pop grunge and working up a much goofier version of her messy teen persona.
Elsewhere, the ballads did in fact return. Some have speculated that this may have been a bad idea (right?) but for me they’ve been growers, particularly the likes of Lacy and The Grudge, where Olivia explores the bitterness of youth and uses it to tear holes in the people who’ve wronged her. But if I’m honest, it’s the rockers that I’m usually waiting for: whether the new wave pastiche of Love Is Embarrassing or autumnal Cure homage Pretty Isn’t Pretty, each one feels like a mini-revelation and it’s the style that I hope she leans on most in the future.
Palehound - Eye On The Bat
Palehound have been around for a while now and every so often I’ve given their records a try and haven't really managed to connect with them properly. Eye on the Bat has been the first exception, though whether that's because it’s any better than the others or I just made more of an effort with it I don’t know. Its template is certainly well worn in the indie world - country rock with varying degrees of aggression or melodic sweetness - but there’s still a lot here that grabs my attention, especially in the charming indie pop of the title track and the heart-rending melancholy of Route 22.
But the thing that caught my ear the most was Ellen Kempner’s disarming honesty, with much of the album spent documenting what sounds like a deeply messy break up. Whether she’s bitterly picking through the fall out on Independence Day or remembering some hilariously embarrassing bedroom scene on opener Good Sex, Eye On The Bat's almost diaristic view is mesmerising throughout, making you warm to Kempner even as she works thru some of her own worst traits. And aside from anything else, her understanding of relationships underlines her strengths as a lyricist, as she dissects their complexities with wit, sympathy and occasional anger to capture all the stuff that transcends whatever we were hoping for in the first place.
Poppy - Zig
After the wild ride that commenced with 2020’s extraordinary pop/metal mash up I Disagree, Poppy has journeyed thru indie rock, goth and punk to wind up back where she started, only not quite. Zig may represent a return to pop - indeed it’s produced by Weeknd affiliate Ali Payami - but it’s one that’s filtered thru all of the places she stopped off along the way.
The crepuscular grind of Church Outfit and Knockoff sound like more danceable versions of the I Disagree sound, while the crunching title track suggests that she can still go as hard as ever. But there are nods to a lighter side here as well, particularly in the strong trio that wind up the album: The Attic recasts her sound in a euphoric drum n bass clatter whilst closer Prove It kicks up a remarkable blend of manic hyperpop and gentle electro-balladry, whilst still working in the rich emotional palette that she’s developed in recent years.
In one sense this is a huge departure from the frenetic punk of last year’s Stagger EP but the vibes here stake out territory that you’d still find oddly familiar. Some of the gothy ballads are less immediate than other songs but nothing on Zig is boring, just varying refinements on her ever evolving musical journey. The critics were split, occasionally rattled and sometimes just plain baffled, but that’s only to be expected by now. Poppy follows her own plan and rarely sticks to the same tune: in truth it’s a privilege just to be a witness to the chaos.
Sweeping Promises - Good Living Is Coming For You
One thing that I find missing in a lot of modern guitar based music is snappy songs with good catchy hooks. While Sweeping Promises appear to place their focus elsewhere - their high concept sound is best understood as someone broadcasting direct from 1979 through a wristwatch speaker - their second album still finds time to deliver fully on the tunes. Good Living Is Coming To You is steeped in bubblegum melodies and memorable choruses, with songs that become earworms before you’ve even registered how catchy they are.
More than anything, it's dominated by Lira Mondal’s imperious vocals: whether it’s in the cascading harmonies of Throw Of The Dice, the fierce yells and hisses that close out the title track or her sweet voiced switch-outs on Ideal No, her character springs out of every song in a way that few singers ever really manage to impose. While you might think that the post punk era has been mined to death by now, Sweeping Promises drag new life into it by going back further: their sound may be heavily rooted in a specific moment but the elements of songcraft often have more in common with 60s girl group classics than gnarled art rockers. Ten bangers and no filler: Good Living Is Coming For You is everything I wanted from it and more.
Wednesday - Rat Saw God
While the queasy vibes of 2021’s Twin Plagues are still high in the mix here, it was the welcome injection of melody on Wednesday's third album that managed to alert the media. That lightness was more apparent in Karly Hartzman's lyrics than you might notice on a passing listen too: though often praised for her grimly amusing takes on middle American backwaters, the key to them was her deceptively soft touch, casting a sympathetic eye over grisly scenes even as she retained their gnarlier undertones.
Single Chosen To Deserve, with its crunching chorus and heartwarming romantic turnaround, feels like the designated big moment from the record but in reality Rat Saw God has an embarrassment of riches. Quarry in particular, with its Waterloo Sunset-esque signature and matter-of-fact dissection of grim local gossip, is an almost pop version of the most haunting aspects of Hartzman's craft, while the washed out bounce of closer TV in the Gas Pump pitches a lonelier scene in a similarly gorgeous manner.
This is not to forget that Wedneday can still rock extremely hard when they want to, especially on the brutal 8 minute Bull Believer, an ambitious multipart epic that ends with Hartzman screaming “FINISH HIM!!!” repeatedly over the chaotic finale. But while Rat Saw God brought this kind of sawtoothed sound back to widespread acclaim, its real trick was how it sugared the pill just enough to get it past even the most determinedly sweet tooth.

Quickly, Ian yanked off the ribbon tied around the box and lifted the lid. The box was filled with crinkly tissue paper, and sitting proudly atop the mess, there was a candle. He paused, taken aback. “A candle?”
Mickey made an impatient gesture so Ian picked up the candle, turning it around. He was about to note that it was an entirely ordinary candle when his gaze landed on the neat calligraphy label plastered to the front.
Light me when you want a BJ.
For @gallavichthings Lovefest - prompt number 10 - ‘A one-shot by someone else that’s less than a year old’ I’d like to recommend this hilarious and fun story by @fangirl-on-fire3 💖
The BJ candle is such a delightful idea and it seems so in-character that they would have something like this. It’s such a fun read as they enjoy the candle. There’s great dialogue and great chemistry between them. The author nails their characterisations and so wonderfully shows them loving the candle and each other. This was one of those stories that made me smile so much after the first read and I’ve reread it since because I love it so much. 💖

HI NATALIA

HIII AURAAAA : )
ok ok here we go
5. For the longest time I've been told I can write, and I sorta knew I could, but I hadn't taken it to heart until a few years ago. So I used to write, but no one else really saw it besides the few people I showed my stuff too. I also spent a crazy amount of time on Pinterest, and starting noticing a lot of writing prompts and snippets posted on tumblr there. I acc never knew much abt tumblr before pinterest. So after looking at those screenshots for a year or 2, I decided I wanted to do the same because I wanted people who, before seeing my writing, otherwise didn't know me (aka no bias), to read my stuff. Wanted to see fr if I acc could write a story that keeps ppl hooked or not! So i started this blog a year ago, and it was a p great idea honestly ; ) 12. Aight, maybe I'm not the most qualified person when it comes to advice, being 17 and a mess, but I do know this. When you make friends, don't get super emotionally invested right from the start. Because the truth is, your very close friends will be a small number of people. The rest will be people you think of fondly, people you can have fun with, but not people you're quite intimately (friendship-wise, ok) close to. You can't have a deep connection with everyone you meet. Also, empathy is wonderful, and friendships are give-and-take but please, if you notice your "friend" ( idc how long you've known each other) is always putting themselves first, their emotions and their wants first, with zero regards to you, then don't think you bending over backwards for them puts you as their number 1. You're someone they take for granted, and it shows. You deserve better, bestie. Invest in people emotionally a little slower. Take some time to learn who they are first, and how they see you, and that "time" is likely years. And when you feel you're getting hurt, always know that sometimes walking away hurts less than holding on to a toxic friendship, no matter how long you've been friends. And walking away can vary from "investing a whole lot less emotionally" to "cutting them off" if they truly hurt you that deeply. 31. I'm saurrr messyyy, it's a problem. My room is always a mess, books and clothes all over the place and half the time I dump everything on the bed until I put it back again. The only thing I'm organised about is the fact that I make to-do lists for college stuff, files on my computer for college stuff n I make exam schedules. But otherwise, I'm all over the place. 32. 4 tabs. Which is weird. Normally I have like 10+. 39. Used to be obsessed with TheOdd1sOut (is that how he spells it, idk) because the mere idea of animated short irl youtube stories or rants was bloody incredible to me cuz I love anything animated and honestly James is hilarious. Also used to be obsessed with TedED youtube vids, because I loved the animation idea again, and they were genuinely interesting. They taught me cool stuff without boring me to death like school did. I've always been a science nerd, so these vids were just epic. Also, loved the mythology episodes, cuz I love how ridiculous mythology is. TYYYSMM for the ask, this was soo fun to do <33
Questions are from this ask game.

Happy STS, Kate!
Is there any scene that you were dying to write for your wip? If yes, why is this scene so important to you, and have you written it already? (If no, talk about one of your favorite scenes instead.)
Happy STS, Elli! Thanks for the ask!
Whumptober 2023: I sneakily wrote some of my looked-forward-to scenes for Whumptober this year. Day 2 was a scene that came to me in the middle of the night sometime in the summer, and it seemed quite serendipitous that it worked with some of the Whumptober prompts. Ain't it just grand when things work out. 😁 I also sat on the concept of Bree learning how to fight for months - Anna put the idea in my head in June, and a little after that, the TV show Schmigadoon! put the Henry character in my head, and then I still didn't write it until September, lmao.) So I was dying to write it for quite a while, but I needed to wait until I was ready for it, haha. (The thought of writing about learning to fight, a Thing I Do Not Know How to Do, was kind of intimidating.)
TPOT: haha. I looked forward to (re)writing The Big Bad Scary Chapter - oh, you know the one. It was important for me because I wanted the opportunity to rewrite it from its not-so-great Whumptober 2022 version, but also because it was a turning point not only in the narrative but also in Bree and Will's relationship. I also looked forward to The One Where She Fucks Off (and doesn't even say goodbye 😭), which is hilarious because I was So Ready for it and then had a really hard writing and editing it, if I remember correctly.
TQOL: I do have a scene I'm really looking forward to writing! What used to be Chapter 10 (with all the extra chapters I have no clue what number it is now), "The Drop," is going to get an intense rewrite, turning a scene that is currently very similar to "The Girl in the Snow" (bad man in alley chapter) into something else that I think will be much better and less repetitive. Since I generally write and edit in order, I haven't done it yet, but I'm excited! The changes are important to me so I can avoid repeating some tropes, but also because it's going to explore an element of IA's reality that never came up in TPOT.
angsty heist wip: Well, there was the hot fire poker thing! That was fun. But actually I'm most looking forward to a dramatic rescue and reunion. Send good wishes for Nanowrimo so I can finally get there!

Hi Pia!
Do you have any advice on how to hook readers? Like how so you decide on what sentence or subject or scene to start with at the beginning of a story that will encourage readers to continue?
I've told multiple different things by people, like to start in the middle of the action or with dialogue, but I'm still not sure and have no idea what I'm doing 😆
Hi anon,
Hilariously I have been told that my beginnings aren't always very good so you should really take this all with a grain of salt, lol. Go beneath the 'read more' if you want to just get some actual practiceable advice that you can start doing immediately to get better at beginnings.
Generally speaking, starting in the middle of the action scene or with dialogue is a distillation of something deeper and simpler:
Most authors start the story too early, because they need more exposition than the reader does, because they're learning the world and the characters and often have to learn it by writing them. This means that by the time they get to the good stuff, in many cases, they are 5-10 chapters in, and you can often safely drop all of those chapters, and other readers would have zero problems understanding the story, because the author has basically told themselves the story of those characters etc. and set up the major action.
This is especially true of authors who are learning to write, and still learning to feel out a story. And anon, you can't always shortcut this even if you do start in the middle of an action scene or in the middle of a dialogue scene. Sometimes you've just got to take it with grace when you hand a manuscript to a beta and they say 'cut the first 10 chapters, it's stronger without them.' I've had to do this to friends, and I've had this done re: my own writing.
The Ice Plague initially started - before I ever put it up - with Olphix going into the Aur forest and setting it on fire. That's a very strong, traumatising, major scene! No one can deny that's not starting with an action scene of great gravity. But it just wasn't the right place to start. I realised something was wrong and took a long hiatus, and then it came to me that it was more important narratively for the reader not to understand where Mosk's grief came from or what had happened to him.
The story had to start with Eran, and it had to start 9 months after that action scene, and if I had started The Ice Plague with my initial idea, I would have had to cut around 15 unnecessary chapters to get to the good bit, lol. (I do actually think The Ice Plague has a strong beginning). Mosk's history had to be mysterious and something that got revealed over time, in the same way that it was revealed over time. And I couldn't learn that until I started writing the story.
Sometimes, anon, you can know all the technical things about why some stories are stronger if they start in an action scene or with dialogue (some are weaker for it), but the only way you can really get through it is via...writing the story.
(Actual practical advice beneath the start plus a whole bunch of opening sentences).
Re: A hooky start, for myself, I want to start with an interesting first sentence. Something that interests me, lol, but something that I think would be interesting if someone else read it too.
I actually think the opening sentence of Stuck on the Puzzle is terrible, lmao. But I think the opening chapter is great. Anyway, here's a list of some of my opening sentences and you can decide or think about what you like about them, what you don't like, and if any of them prompts you to read further. Think about why, as well. What was it? What bit did you want to know more about:
Cateline described Grimglass as the ‘ass end of Corambis,’ and certainly while the heavy clouds hung over the sea like a pall, I could see what she meant.
Connor stared intently at the computer as it booted up, looked around the otherwise dark room, and then up to the security cameras he'd disabled. (This is not a very strong opening sentence, I think the whole paragraph is better lol).
Alex liked that they were both, in a way, failures.
In high school, Alex used to imagine forcing Sebastian to give him blowjobs.
Red galaxies fired beneath Efnisien’s eyelids. (This one is also stronger in the whole paragraph imho).
The An-Fnwy estate was just as grand and imposing as Augus Each Uisge had imagined when he was an underfae teenager, living in a lake nearby.
When the Oak King proclaimed the new fae era, the ‘Season of Turning,’ we all assumed it would be a time of positive change, of growth. (Blah, the ORIGINAL first sentence was from the start of the next chapter).
Augus Each Uisge, predatory waterhorse, Unseelie fae, was bored.
Jack shifted uncomfortably in his ceremonial soldier’s uniform.
The magic around Eran’s wrist throbbed, the beetle-black ink of the months-old tattoo sinking deeper into his flesh.
Gwyn stood, embarrassed, in his wrestling gear.
Efnisien had forty four books in his plain grey melamine bookshelf.
The sun was bright red on the horizon, looking more like a bomb, the smell of smoke acrid in the back of Faber’s nose.
‘I hear they want to promote you to nursery manager,’ a voice said smoothly. ‘What a coup indeed.’
Almost eight months had passed, the next time Gwyn saw Augus.
-
Generally speaking I like to establish mood quickly, particularly embarrassment, discomfort, boredom, or the kind of emotion that you want to see resolved. These folks all have big and small problems they need fixing, and with very few exceptions, I want people to know that immediately, so that they'll...ideally stick around and watch the problems get fixed (or get worse lol). I also start strongly with character, rather than just...detached setting description.
That works for me, it might be different for you! Go find all your favourite books and read their opening sentences and paragraphs, do some research anon. Stop listening to friends (and ChatGPT written articles on how to write because there's so many now x.x) who say 'start in dialogue' or 'start in action' and do the research that teaches you why people say stuff like this and why it's also not always right. Don't even listen to me - I don't always write strong beginnings and I'm very open about that - go get 10 books, 20 books, 50 books, and write down their first sentences or paragraphs in a word document or in Google Docs and study them.
Which ones do you love? Which do you find boring? Which do you remember thinking 'ehhh maybe it gets better.' Notice and actively look for the things that hook you and the things that don't. How many start with dialogue? Or action? How many start with emotion, or description? How many are starting with setting, character, something else?
Try practicing writing sentences like this, or imagining openings like this for your own works. Learn by doing. How would you change the openings by genre? How would you change the voice by character? Alex's opening sentences are very strongly in his voice. Meanwhile Mosk's voice in Smoke in Autumn is non-existent, we literally start with Augus' dialogue dominating and intruding upon his mind and thoughts.
And then realise sometimes you still have to write 10 chapters that you might need to cut (hey bonus content that readers will want to devour one day! Make sure you save it :D ), to find the right place to start your story. It sucks, but it happens. I've been through this with Mallory & Mount and only now after like over a year have I figured out exactly where I have to start that damned story, and I finally have my opening sentence, which is:
The guard looked at Lewis Mount like the murderer he was.
And I love that opening sentence :D I'm biased, but I think it's very hooky.
Writing beginnings and endings is a craft, but you'll learn with practice! And you'll learn a lot via research. Thankfully, you probably like reading, which means you can start researching literally right now.
The best way to learn what you're doing is to learn from the people who have already done it successfully. This is sometimes famous writers, but just as often it's looking at what your favourite writers are doing. Chances are you maybe want to write a little bit like them, so go study their opening sentences! Maybe they don't have strengths in that, but I bet some of them do.
And from there you can study opening paragraphs, opening chapters. You can feel out the ones you wanted to skip, the ones you'd read again and again, the ones you love, the ones you didn't feel anything over. :D
Anyway I think this is probably a pretty good place to start! The folks giving you advice have the right idea, it's just good to understand why it's the right idea. The best way to get to that is to just...research openings of books for yourself and decide what you like, what you'd like to write like, and then trying it out for yourself :D

Haru's Birthday Weekend (Prompt: 👾)
What is your favorite episode of Appmon, and why?
OK, I wrote this prompt, so you'd THINK I'd have an easy answer to this, but I'm gonna break my own rules, because as it turns out I can't pick just one episode, lolol. And then I was going to do a Top 5, but I can't do that either! So here are my Top 7. I could probably have turned this into a Top 10, especially since all of the final episodes are SO strong, but I did try to limit myself to one episode per Appmon "arc" (which I'm not sure I could even delineate, but this sounds about right, so good enough!).
Also, periodic reminder to PLEASE WATCH APPMON. IT'S SO GOOD.
Tumblr media
Under the cut because of end-of-series spoilers, and to spare your dash!
Also, excuse the bias to these screenshots. I run blogs dedicated to Haru and Knight, and I'm too lazy to take more right now kjdfahkfh

Episode 4 ("Take Your Dressing! Cameramon's Halloween Scandal!")
This episode is a GREAT early episode for its focus on Haru and Gatchmon's characters and their Driver-Buddy relationship, particularly showcasing how Haru is able to think on his feet and use his wits to win the day. Plus it's Halloween-themed. And Haru USES HIS GOGGLES. Literally, what's not to love?? XD
Tumblr media
Episode 18 ("Haru and Yujin's Bond - Stop! Rampaging Resshamon!")
I LOVE this episode for paying homage to the Pokemon Go craze. Amazing and incredibly relevant, considering the show originally aired in 2016, rotfl. A very fun premise that also places a lot of emphasis on Haru and Yuujin's relationship, including Haru's worries about revealing his secret life as an AppDriver to Yuujin and insight into Yuujin's character, all important groundwork before Yuujin becomes an AppDriver in his own right.

Episode 25 ("Infiltrating to the Deep Web at last! The Mysterious Cyber Kowloon!")
OK, THIS actually might be my favorite episode. It has it all: gorgeous animation, an AMAZING setting, surreal comedy, a lot of drama, and ultimately our main trio of heroes biting off more than they can chew, ending on a positive note nonetheless. It's SUCH a well-done episode, and is an exciting and satisfying way to wrap up the first half of the series.

Episode 31 ("The Traveling Companion!? Tripmon's Terrible Trip")
While you might THINK I put this episode on my list for the Haru/Yuujin moments, it really made it on here because of its focus on Offmon, his fears, and ultimately... his secret. I love that little guy and the themes of the episode, plus Tripmon has a GREAT design and is a fun Monster of the Day!
Tumblr media
Episode 36 ("The Conclusion of General Election! The Hand of Devil Approaching to Eri!")
AKA The One on the Yacht. My favorite Knight episode, if only because the storyboarding/direction is ON POINT and Eri is such a badass. The whole episode is such a wonderful showcase of her character and her plot thread (plus, Knight reveals his true colors to our heroine, in a truly stunning scene) <3
Tumblr media
Episode 42 ("Rei's Determination! The Great "Search for Hajime" Operation!")
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the first half of this episode are the best 15 minutes of filler in the entire series. And it's not even really filler, since it's all about Rei getting an AMAZING focus episode that's simultaneously hilarious, satisfying, and completely heart-wrenching in the end. Plus more of Elena and Alice! WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE???
Episode 49 ("The Miraculous Final Evolution! The God Appmon Advent!")
(I don't have a screenshot for this one yet, sorry!)
THE LAST FEW EPISODES ARE SO IMPORTANT, but I wanted to talk about this one specifically. Our heroes (minus Haru) rally and unlock their God Grade Appmon in truly touching and wonderful scenes with their Buddies, with Minerva's question coming into play one last time. And then the visuals of the fight to follow (where the kids hover on platforms at their Appmon's sides in a way that's incredibly evocative of how their Buddies float around around when they're Unrealized) are so epic, in a way that you KNOW this is what the whole series has been building toward. It’s about the SCALE. It’s about the PARALLELS. 👍👍👍 And then we have Haru: despondent, betrayed, bereaving, and being egged on by YJ-14, before... well. Some truly amazing scenes, I'll leave it at that. This episode has me screaming, crying, frothing at the mouth, etc, and that feeling doesn't stop until the series is over. It's SO GOOD.
Thanks for reading!
