The Ineffable Detective Agency presents more Ineffable Discontinuity and Suspicious Moments: Hawaiian Shirt / Pub Table Guy
Introducing... the extra/background character who makes Aziraphale do THIS, and then immediately has his table at the pub miracled away:
Tumblr media
Jon Dan Duncan's imdb profile doesn't list Good Omens, not even as "uncredited" - which seems strange, because his profile does include the above photo of him. Since the actor isn't credited in GO, we don't have a character name or know anything more than what we can see onscreen. So, what DO we see?
First of all, when Aziraphale sees this person, he definitely has A Reaction. We were probably all too distracted by Azi stroking the thin dark duke to notice (as an aside, IS Crowley a Duke? Of what? Hell? Something else??), but after the 90th rewatch, it gets a bit easier to focus on these background details that are probably critically important to the story in ways we just don't understand yet. Look at this:
Tumblr media
Did he mouth "stop" when he's supposed to be saying "sherry"? Maybe. These LOOKS, though:
Tumblr media
We all know that Michael Sheen's expressions, no matter how tiny or fleeting, are very intentional. Who IS this mystery person??! Immediately after taking his table:
Tumblr media
After whoever-he-is loses his pub table, he lingers nearby, and there's an interesting "ineffable discontinuity" - what he's holding in his right hand abruptly changes twice between camera cuts (sound on, if you want context for this small zoomed-in part of the screen, and try watching from your browser if the Tumblr app is cutting off the right edge of the image):
So far, our best explanation for the "ineffable discontinuities" - things that inexplicably and improbably change, like which hand is holding his drink or (coming up next) when he's behind Gabriel and then suddenly in front of him - is that we're seeing multiple timelines that are being knitted together in production to make them look seamless - but who knows? We'd love to hear your ideas! (Also, see the appearing Honolulu Roast sign in the coffeeshop, or Crowley's tattoo and sideburns, or the fandom's newest discovery (from @kimberleyjean and @bbbitchvibbbez) about Gabriel visiting his statue with "both" s1 and s2 Beelzebubs, plus the way the statue's cross is sometimes missing - just to name a few!)
Was the point in this scene with Hawaiian shirt/pub guy's right hand to draw our attention to this page of his newspaper?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Unearthed mysteries of sealed library basement" - when Crowley told Shax that Aziraphale was "stock taking in the basement", was it true that there IS a basement in the bookshop? Basements apparently aren't that common in most of the UK, but London is famous for having "iceberg" buildings (where the basements are actually bigger than what's above-ground).
"Government approves funding for citywide charging stations" - We don't know, but it makes us think of all the electric cars used in s2 (it was an indoor set) and of Crowley throwing lightning in the street.
And the smaller headline on the right ... Hmmm. Can you read it? 😅 Maybe "Neighbor says New ------ park gate is ' too --- ' "
And it's not just the pub during episode 2! This mystery character is everywhere!
E1: He somehow starts out behind Gabriel, and then ends up in front of Gabriel with another extra on his arm:
Tumblr media
E2: In addition to his appearance in the pub, he's also watching when Saraqael, Uriel, and Michael arrive:
Tumblr media
E3: Our mystery character is there again when Crowley makes it rain, wearing his e1 shirt:
Tumblr media
E4: We didn't spot him in this episode, but there are only a few minutes of present-day SoHo. Did anyone else see him?
E5: He has a doppelganger in a different Hawaiian print shirt! (Notice the different facial hair, among other things.)
Tumblr media
Later in e5 he does actually make an appearance in the bookshop window for a quarter of a second (!!), wearing his e2 pub outfit, and maybe it's his presence that elicits this similar-to-the-pub reaction from Aziraphale?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
E6: And back again to his black e1 and e3 shirt with the red flowers, while in line behind The Metatron, and then sitting at a table on the sidewalk, where he remains with the person in the turban who was in line behind him (and who also shows up quite a lot during s2) right up until Crowley drives away:
Tumblr media
So, why have him wear such a noticable black shirt with red flowers on what are supposed to be three different days? Is he connected, with his Hawaiian print shirt, to the appearing Honolulu Roast sign? Why does he get a doppelganger in e5 - to distract us from his presence outside the bookshop before the ball? Why does Aziraphale react like this - TWICE - upon seeing this person?? (Much to Crowley's great confusion!)
Tumblr media
And why does it seem that Aziraphale is keeping this person's presence/ identity/ importance a secret from Crowley?
As always, we'd love to hear your ideas!
Also, here's an earlier post from @theastrophysicistnextdoor about him, with gratitude for the inspiration to write all this up.
With appreciation for contributions from @noneorother, @thebluestgreen, and @embracing-the-ineffable at the @ineffable-detective-agency

Weird Coffee Shop Guy
I first noticed the coffee shop employee guy in E1. He looks fairly normal most of the time, like when we see him while Azi and Crowley first meet at the coffee shop. I assume, but can't know for certain, that he is the one Nina mouths and gestures Crowley's 6-shots of espresso order to. He appears to be dressed with pale yellow and orange.
But then, things go weird. And again, later, in E3.
First in E1, ~25:00 time stamp, Maggie arrives as Nina is closing up the shop. Nina walks behind the counter talking with Maggie and off to the side, you see this guy put on what looks A LOT like Azi's grey sweater, turn, and walk behind a completely oblivious Nina. It looks like he is disappearing just as the scene cuts back to Maggie.
Tumblr media
Next, jump to the beginning of E3 with Mrs Sandwich in the coffee shop, just prior to Muriel's arrival, ~00:30 time stamp. Again, this guy is there, this time in the red shirt and with a yellow apron.
tl;dr Don't watch Nina, just keep your eye on the employee.
play-by-play in the snippet:
To begin, out of view but off to the right, he has handed off an order to the lady that we only see the top of her head above the coffee mugs as she is leaving. Employee-guy has turned around away from the customer and is heading around towards Nina. We see him there all dark and smudgy off to the right of Nina right at the edge of the screen.
The scene immediately cuts to the opposite view and there we see him making the hand-off to the customer. Note that he is using a cell phone. At almost this same time, Nina gets her notification. I suspect this is just a coincidence to throw us off. I think.
While Nina reads her message, employee-guy walks around and behind her -- who is still basically ignoring him, not seeing him? He still has his phone in hand, looking like he's using it.
I've snipped out a couple of seconds of dialog between Mrs Sandwich and Nina where we don't see employee guy.
Now, here's the really weird stuff: when we return to viewing Nina, this guy basically just walks right out from the shelves behind Nina! All small and out of proportion, and I don't think he has his phone.
This is the weirdest thing I've come across so far and I have no explanation at this time. I only know that there is something very strange on Whickber St.
[Sorry for the poor-quality gifs and video. I'm brand new at this stuff and don't really have the hang of it.]

I forget who was working on the Hawaiian Shirt Guy theory but
I found a new guy. He's either in Hawaiian print shirts like this:
Tumblr media
Or, in CAMO PRINT like this. Which strikes me as VERY weird compared to every other recurring print in the Extras this season...
Tumblr media
OR FIFTEEN SECONDS LATER he's in an absurd number of layers when he's hanging out with "Velma" at the market...
(Obviously I don't know if it IS the same guy, I'm going based on the very conspicuous haircut)
Tumblr media
Now that I'm looking for him, I AM RECOGNIZING MORE EXTRAS WEARING MULTIPLE OUTFITS, AT LEAST TWO EACH. POSSIBLY. AND THEY TELEPORT AROUND FROM ONE CAMERA CUT TO ANOTHER, BUT LIKE DOWN THE STREET.
Something is DEFINITELY wrong lol. I know we know, but extra evidence is good lol.

What's up with Whicker Street?
Crack theory time! This is an attempt to explain the weirdness on Whickber Street. Unlike the other theories I've been revolving in my mind, this theory operates on a symbolic level, foreshadowing a possible future. It does not preclude a more plot-relevant primary explanation, but offers what could be a hidden, extra layer of meaning.
Please don't ask or tag Neil about fan theory.
Okay, here it is: Whickber Street in s2 is the future of heaven/hell/the afterlife following s3. It foreshadows a post-revolution heaven/hell/afterlife that is not about misery and abstinence or strict dividing lines but about community and enjoyment.
Evidence in s2:
WS and the surrounding streets are fairly self-contained, encompassing many human experiences and pleasures: food, drink, sex, music, clothes, theater, books, magic (see the layout here). This foreshadows a more fun afterlife/heaven/hell that is more like life on earth.
A&C spend more time both with other angels and demons and with humans this season, also foreshadowing a greater sense of community in the future.
The frequent use of B-sides in the musical score and references relates to how everyone is getting a second chance in this kinder afterlife/heaven/hell.
Maggie's shop is the afterlife records office (think Dead Boy Detectives).
Maggie is angel coded and functions as a parallel or mirror character to Muriel. They're both sweet tempered, enthusiastic and lonely, maintaining the records that no one visits.
The coffee shop is a portal to the afterlife because “life begins after coffee.” It also represents liberty from the dull-to-torturous spectrum that we’ve seen in heaven, hell and the afterlife so far.
Tumblr media

Nina is demon coded and her closest parallel is Eric. Like Eric, she's more aware of what's going on than others and just can't stop herself from sharing facts (think Eric in the recruitment meeting pointing out the issues with Shax's plan v. Nina being aware that the ball is all wrong). And like Eric she has a very familiar face that crops up in the show again and again.
The WS traders’ meeting to talk about the “proposed rubbish collection times” parallels the “cleaning rota” at the archangels’ meeting. I think the shopkeepers may mirror higher-ranking angels and demons, but I don't know if they match up one to one.
The extras on the street walk in circles and double back on each other, a lot like the demons (or damned?) circulating behind Crowley and Beez in hell in ep1.

The extras’ bright clothes represent a happier way of life than the dead, angels and demons had before - neither the blandness of heaven nor the darkness of hell.
The vintage aspect to the clothes could be influenced by when humans died or by angels’ and demons’ unique fashion senses.
If this is indeed symbolic foreshadowing, in s3 we could see more about building this sense of community and enabling angels, demons and the dead to practice more free will and have a better quality of life. A particular pair of scenes that might be mirrored in s3 is the ball and resulting battle. Instead of textually human characters (plus Jim) needing to be protected, we could see A&C defend a gathering of the dead and other angels and demons. And we could see an ending where angels go “over the road” (a phrase used multiple times in reference to the coffee shop) to be friendly with demons en masse, not just in these one-off pairings we’ve seen so far.
Another possible s3 development that could grow from this theory is a friendship or romance between Muriel and Eric as mirrors to Maggie and Nina (and A&C and G&B), which tons of writers have already included in their fics.
Finally, if the primary meaning of the weird extras is that they're angelic or demonic spies, that could align with this secondary level of meaning and foreshadowing: Spying on these traitors on WS is the most fun they’ve had in millennia and maybe they won’t be happy to go back to their normal routine.
I'm not at all sold on this theory and there are lots of discontinuities it doesn't explain. I’m also not sure how much this foreshadows a new heaven/hell or a new afterlife or both. But I haven't been able to get it out of my head, so I offer it up on the altar of meta discussion.

Ok, i've got maybe an hour and a half free before I should probably go to sleep...
Do I or Don't I start a document about the extras?

Watching the behind the scenes videos of Good Omens makes something very clear - absolutely everything is meticulously controlled, designed and MEANT. Which means Crowley’s tattoo moving is not a mistake. The rug above the portal changing appearance is not a mistake. The Eccles cakes disappearing is not a mistake.
Everything little thing that I’ve seen put down to continuity errors, or lazy writing, or mistakes was meant. It’s meant to be like that, we’re meant to notice and it’s meant to mean something.

Good Omens extras: Delayed???
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, everyone. Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue, or if I missed something, or if something is just wrong with my account. It was said that new X-RAY and Extra content was supposed to be posted on the 4th, and it is currently 1:15 PM on the 5th where I'm at, and this is all that I'm seeing. The videos shows have already been up, as I'm sure most of you know, so they're not the new content. I looked in the Extra and the Explore sections, as well as seeing if maybe they were posted with the episodes or accidentally in the Season 1 section, and I've seen nothing.
Did I miss something? Are they just delayed, or have other people gotten the content?

has anyone else seen the deleted scene concept art from s2 ep 6 extras? i won't describe or share them here since i'm not 100% sure prime was supposed to share them. it's marked as a deleted scene so it may not hold any weight/matter. but they're definitely ominous.

Good Omens extras behaving strangely: marking columns?
@noneorother previously pointed out that the columns in front of Aziraphale's bookshop have dark smudges that change throughout season 2.
Guess what I just spotted in e3? This extra appears to be marking the columns and then hastily moving away:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here she is during the discontinuous "our car" conversation in e2 with another extra of interest, and again at the ball in e5 standing behind Gabriel and also standing with the young mystery girl who leaves with the Chengs:
Tumblr media
Among other things, this means this extra had at least three outfits! There are others who seem to show up, episode after episode, wearing the exact same brightly-colored thing. Why???
As always, I'm interested to hear your thoughts!

"We'll both be unforgivable!"
"You always were the nicer of the two of us."
Why did I think that Jophiel's face being a solid color would make the whiteboard easier?! I should have known better!?
Anyway! @asleepyy 's Oopsie Omens au broke me. It's amazing! You should read it! How is it that I know the plot of the book and the show, and I'm *still* anxious to find out what happens next!?! It's an AU where everything is almost exactly the same minus one key difference!?!? I know what will happen next! But also, I don't.
