anons, i'm putting your asks under the cut for length💜:
1.
The thing with BAs is that they want to scream "my ship was endgame!" even if there wasn’t any development that got them there. They know BA has been given dust but they won’t admit it to themselves. Like, look at them now scrambling because they haven’t gotten anything romantic from them but still want to act so sure of themselves.
—comparison is a thief of joy and all that. maybe this is who b/a is and they should stop wanting to see what they've seen in other relationships on other teen shows or what they've seen from bughead and varchie. they wanted childhood friends to lovers, no? maybe this is what riverdale thinks that is. and we should respect the fresh new ships that shook up the show and gives us a different perspective that broke the monotony of what riverdale always was, right? you know, the mysteries, the saving of the town, murders, and general mayhem? so glad the show did away with all of that for this new and different experience.
it's all so....
Tumblr media
They wouldn’t care if BA had zero romantic scenes and end the series with a baby because they love the "endgame" label better and is this crazy desperation that has them believing what those C list writers from RVD tells them on social media. They are desperate for that baby even when they probably know it’s not happening. If this was this kind of huge amazing thing that’s going to happen to BA, the apparently endgame of the series, why tease it so much and not leave it to surprise? RVD is screaming at you that nothing is what it seems but they firmly believe a baby is happening in the real time line. That baby will be a Vale thing and they won’t like it at all despite the fact they made those theories themselves, not one else.
—oh for sure, it's always come off like it's first and foremost a competition for them. i've gotten harassed enough over the years to see that they only come around to be smug, they usually turn tail when it goes bad for them. it's too bad that they're not just legit enjoying their ship. they've done the worst for that ship over the years tbh. is it my notp? no. i don't even hate archie the way a lot of people do. but they sure made me dislike them, you know?
i gotta be honest, if it were bughead in this situation right now, i would be waiting for the boom. just the history alone of them almost always spoiling big b/a storylines that don't go the way they think it will should have been enough for them to be wary. that and the fact that they don't actively spoil big bughead or varchie storylines weeks in advance? how is that not a red flag to them?
i have never been like, oh they shouldn't theorize. of course they should! they should have as much fun with the show as everyone else but they're not interested in the show, they're interested in b/a and seem to be truly annoyed right now that it's not the b/a show. did they think that b/a would get the usual varchie, bughead, betty, and archie storylines and the other main character would just...sit it out? that's never been how it works on the show.
i've said it a hundred times but i don't get the obsession with the baby. babies aren't anchors or band-aids. really, the hyper focus on it sort of squicks me out a bit tbh.
🍔👑🍔👑🍔👑🍔👑🍔
2.
seeing rvd is actually crazy how much lack of development those "new couples" are having. specially the one they claim has been the "endgame" all alone. like, they truly don’t have any depth into their relationship at all. they don’t talk about anything, important things are happening and they don’t acknowledge each other, they don’t have any romantic moments nor scene that aims for their development as a couple like bugvarchoni used to have before. we used to have scenes where BH/VA/CH addressed some issues in their relationship or the effects of situations at least 3 times during the season. but this new couples are soulless. they don’t feel passionate or excited to be in a relationship, they just *exist* to the point it doesn’t even matter because it doesn’t change any dynamic.
—it rings hollow for me a lot, tbh. i'm biased but not totally lacking in objectivity. archie's behavior makes sense if he can't feel anything physically or emotionally but you're not wrong, none of them come off like they're excited to have started these new relationships. and i know s5 was almost nonstop misery p/orn but this season has had a lot more energy and none of it is coming from within these new relationships.
i feel like the writers used the "those are adults and very mature" thing to just jump the whole development and not giving them anything to work towards. like, even when BH was way past the year in a relationship and you would argue the "honeymoon" phase went away you could still have them cuddling and having some sort of physical touch even in group scenes but the writers are truly just giving BA bro beer nights, scenes for plot exposition and call it a day. it’s tragic almost. TJ has the most boring relationship, they are just roommates that are together for economic necessity, you would think they have years as a couple and tired of each other but realistically they have a few months together (?) so they would be in the early stages of relationship.
—the writers have definitely avoided dealing with the conflict they caused. it just comes off as lazy. they did what they did just to break them up for a time jump and then most of the fallout landed directly on bughead in s5 because they swept the rest of it under the rug with archie leaving for the army for varchie? okay. the time jump ended up being wasted potential and then they just flipped the script for the event? as if no one would notice or side eye that? alright.
they did all of that to get us where we are and then they make the new relationships boring on top of it? the audacity.
BAs spent 6 years saying that all the BA crumbs the writers used to stir up the pot just meant "slow burn and endgame" compare to the well developed relationships between BH/VA. if they weren’t so annoying i would feel sad that they are being handle not even leftovers. rvd isn’t making any efforts – the scenes they used to write were you had couples making actual efforts in their relationship aren’t happening for BA. the only thing they have looking forward is that baby that isn’t even gonna happen at all, if it was so important it wouldn't have been spoiled already. it’s sad. imagine waiting 6 years only for them to not even acknowledge their relationship.
—what precedent gave them the idea that a handful of interactions over 4 years, usually for romantic drama with their other partners plus a 4 episode fwb arc was going to give them some sort of slowburn endgame? they love to compare tv shows to rvd, right? what tv show gave them that? i'm not even being facetious, i may not watch tons of tv but i cannot, for the life of me, think of any teen drama that had a couple seriously date the other two mains for 4 years before getting together in s6 and staying together. and it's certainly not been any of the couples they compare b/a to.
if the show cared about their ship the way they insist, i simply don't think they would write it the way they do.
3.
anon, i saw your message but it poofed when i went back but i agree, he's too media savvy for that. if anyone thinks they aren't giving some sort of talking points—e.g. "i'm so glad we've had the opportunity to explore" or "has been fun to explore"—i don't know what to tell them. no one thinks it's weird they're all sort of saying the same things about these relationships? take the old ships out of it that distract from what they're not saying about the current ships, you know? add in a couple of the more obvious but polite diversions or jokey answers? i have questions.

Hi babe! (I am still here, lurking around lol). Talk to me about how Reggie/Veronica/Archie is the true missed love triangle (ot3??) of Riverdale. Like, obviously Varchie was always gonna love each other more than they would Reggie but this triangle could have been hilarious and great in season 3 and wasn't (bc Riverdale). What would you have done with it? Season 3 focused of course because who cares about Reggie v. 2.
baaaaaaaaaaaabe! missed you.
under the cut for those who don't want to see me talking about this lol i know some don't
okay, so i'd start in the summer between season 2 and season 3.
reggie was kind of dropped by josie out of nowhere and he sees her going around with sweet pea and understands nothing. he also lives in an abusive household. he spends a lot of time at pop's, where veronica is working. archie is always around there too, and they're basically the only people in town that reggie can talk to atm (moose and kevin are having their secret thing so they are not always available lol).
while he spends a lot of time with varchie, he gets a little jealous of that relationship. they're very close and in love. but everytime archie leaves he sees how veronica is really trying to keep it together, notices how she's almost cracking, so afraid to lose him. he says some stupid shit to make her laugh and it often works.
a day before the trial, archie asks reggie to take care of her/protect her if anything happens to him.
when archie pleads guilty reggie is kinda angry at him, because he's seen first hand how hard veronica worked for that not to happen. he keeps going to pop's and offers help at the speakeasy, kind of to replace archie, who had been helping before. she accepts it. when she tells him about archie's sneakers, he offers to go with her to the mall, etc.
in my head, archie should've broken up with her sooner. a little after the jailhouse rock thing. of course, he does it to protect her - hiram threatens him, says veronica will be the one getting hurt next time, and archie does what he has to do. it's heartbreaking for him, but he wants her to be free of the ~harm that's being with her.
veronica would be equally heartbroken and angry. she would definitely know something's up, but archie would be strong in his decision. regardless, veronica would move out of the pembrooke and start living at pop's attic (obsessed with this idea by @flwrpotts, it's my canon).
then we'd have veronica reverting back to her old veronica days, drinking and partying and just losing it. betty would be worried, cheryl too, so veronica would slowly cut them off her life until the only one left was reggie, who was protecting her - also pissed at archie - but also ended up finding some sort of escape when he sees this new side of her, party and flirty and crazy. and during these times they'd start to fuck.
reggie would feel guilty for it, stop giving archie any news. until then, he used to visit archie. he stops. veronica would eventually notice reggie's troubles at home and they'd become closer. he would spend more time with her (and her booze and her drugs) than in his own house. they'd isolate themselves from others.
then, archie would be released. jughead and betty would be the ones who did it. when he comes back, she tries to stop it, but they immediately fall into each other's arms. but things wouldn't be the same, there's still too much hurt between them. he still is afraid her dad will hurt her. and it would be sort of a mess for a moment - veronica not being able to trust archie, archie not wanting to tell her the truth about their breakup and making things worse, reggie angry because he was sidelined.
veronica ends up "choosing" reggie because whatever archie has going on isn't working for her, it just hurts her more. but after that, reggie learns what really happened, while talking to archie. archie tells him that hiram is to blame. reggie tells veronica the truth, even if he's scared he'll lose her.
at first, he doesn't lose her, but little by little she starts to get closer to archie again with loads of mutual pining and reggie getting insecure. at some point, it gets unsustainable, and they breakup. #tome that would happen around prom. she'd go with reggie but they'd end it, and by the end of the party, archie would find her sitting alone and sit with her.
into s4 everyone would be single - veronica, reggie, and archie. it would be sort of painful between reggie and v, a little aggressive between archie and reggie, and veronica and archie in a friendship with tension. in the first football game of the season, though, the bulldogs would win, and veronica would kiss archie. the choice has been made!
(i don't know veggie s5/s6, i really don't, never saw anything more stupid in my life lol)

I don't want to get my hopes up that we're getting Jabitha for the long haul but it would be a really bad look, after Vanessa's call out of the writers, if Tabitha was used as a foil or cheerleader for Jug and Betty. It has been established very early on that Jabitha are attracted to each other, Jug just said he wasn't over the break up,NOT Betty, the trauma of the betrayal, in other words I like you enough I want to work on myself first, so I can be at my best for you, that doesn't say BH to me
I have to put this under a read more because I accidently made this very long lol who knew I, jabitha-endgame, had a lot of feelings about this
I agree with all of this. Vanessa speaking up has already had a huge impact on the show, and I think Tabitha is evidence of that. I actually ranted a bit about this point earlier, so I won’t repeat all that here lol.
There's just nothing narratively indicating that Tabitha would push Betty and Jughead together, especially since she is the one who initiated her kiss with Jughead - and he kissed back! Jughead unpromptedly jumped in to dance and twirl Tabitha and dip her over the table. They both got swept up in that moment, giggling with huge smiles. Even before the kiss they are so close to each other and you can see something has changed for them both.
I don't see any reason to fear that Tabitha would be used as a prop to push Jughead to Betty. Especially in the last two episodes of this season where Jabitha have been growing closer the entire time and Bughead haven't interacted. Betty also told Tabitha that Jughead "wasn't her problem" and that he shouldn't be Tabitha's problem either. Tabitha cares so much about Jughead, why would she push him to be with someone who has outwardly shown disdain towards him. Betty has also played Jughead's voicemail in front of Tabitha and Jessica for the purpose of "exposing" Jughead to them. I know Bugheads want their ship back, but there isn't anything there for them right now. Not a single thing we have seen in the time jump episodes supports their wishful thinking that Tabitha will want them together.
1000 percent Jughead was not ready to be in another relationship, and that's not because he was "still hung up on Betty". He explains to Tabitha that the Betty breakup was rough on him, says he has trauma from it, and that his last relationship was a toxic one. That's why that conversation ends with them flirt-ily deciding to be fRiENdS 😏 and then Jughead says "as your fRiENndD 😏😏😏" before asking Tabitha his favor. They table their potential romance for the time being because Jughead isn't in the right mental space to have another romantic relationship, but their feelings for each other are still there. Heck, when Jughead disappears to go to NY he makes one phone call, and it's to Tabitha with the romantic intention to "finish that dance". Their last dance ended with a kiss! And when Jughead gets back from NY their incoming romance feels so obvious.
In 5x16 Jughead and Tabitha exchange genuine apologies - and Jughead looks shocked that Tabitha thinks she has anything to apologize for. I think the juxtapositions between the Jabitha and Bughead apology scenes are intentional. Same with the Bughead and Jabitha voicemails. By the end of the episode we get the incredible "why are you so nice to me" scene with Tabitha gently reaching out to touch and hold onto Jughead's hand as she tells him that she cares about him and he needs to take care of himself, and this is what prompts him to go back to AA. Not to mention when Betty and Jughead finally have their talk in this episode, Jughead is somehow the one apologizing and while he clearly has fallen off the wagon with his drinking right in front of her, Betty just gets up and leaves him without a word while he’s on a 2 minute phone call. There has not been anything remotely resembling Bughead reciprocation from Betty this season - she’s called his writing cringey, she hooked up with the person she cheated on him with, she told Tabitha he wasn’t her problem anymore, and she sided with his ex over him by giving Jessica the manuscript he worked so hard to write for his deadline. Betty had her own trauma she’s working through this season, obviously, and I don’t hold that against her. But her interactions with and about Jughead simply aren’t forwarding a romantic narrative anymore, that’s just not the story being told between them.
In 5x17, it’s been 10 days and Jughead is "recovered" - not fully because that's not how alcoholism works, but for Riverdale purposes he seems ok now. And Jughead's relationship to Tabitha is developing further. When Tabitha tells Betty and Jughead that Squeaky is missing, Jughead's eyes are glued to Tabitha and he offers himself up to help her. Previously it had been Tabitha helping him out, and now that has changed. And when Tabitha gets the news in the morgue that confirms Squeaky is dead, Jughead and Tabitha turn towards each other for support, with both of them physically reaching out for the other - and Betty has no jealous reaction to this almost couply moment that happened right in front of her face. Jughead is making himself emotionally available to Tabitha now in ways he wasn't able to before 5x15, where he had to address the trauma that was still affecting him - his relationship and breakup with Betty.
And in 5x18 we get Jughead now being there for Tabitha and supporting her. This makes perfect sense for their development and anyone who is shocked by this simply wasn’t paying attention to what was happening on screen before.
Also, there is just no way that Tabitha is a throwaway girlfriend for Jughead either, because Jessica already fills that role. Tabitha is her own character, and parts of the fandom really need to stop ignoring her. Erinn is a main cast member and is a series regular again next season as well, Tabitha isn’t going anywhere.
Tabitha’s purpose in the story is not to push Jughead and Betty together or to prop them up to the other. In fact, Tabitha the one who is with Jughead during all of his emotional moments this season. She is the one who protected him from the debt collectors, she is the one who gives him a job when he needs it, she takes care of him at the key party, she goes with him to the support group and gets him to open up to her when he runs out of it, she pretends to be his current girlfriend to protect him from his ex, she helps him with the mothman investigation, she let’s him keep weird alien corpses in her restaurant, she is the one who is worried about him when he is missing, she is the one person he calls on his way out of town, she is the person Jughead goes to when he needs someone he trusts to watch over him, she tucked him in on the couch when he passed out, she is the one that convinced him that he needs to take care of, and prioritize, himself - hello?! what’s not clicking for some people? It’s all there, it’s all been there this entire time.
GIVE ME THE MUSICAL NOW I CAN’T WAIT.
Sorry for this extremely wordy answer, but yeah I agree completely with everything you said. To me, narratively, it’s Jabitha full steam ahead.

“ u don't know something we wanted to do since high school “ know a lot of you love Betty  but wow that comment was petty as hell and you can't defend it The implication tho . that line was the nail in the coffin for me.
Dear anon, as viewers, there are limits to how much we’re willing to rationalise when presented with bad plots / plot holes. Especially in a show like Riverdale, where erratic writing is the rule. My moto is: if the creator doesn’t bother then neither should I. Of course, it doesn’t always work that way, because we get emotionally invested in one thing or the other.
Has the show given me a means of explaining Betty’s current choices? Yes (her PTSD). Has the show explicitly told me to make that link? No. At least, not yet. And to be honest, it’s 50-50 with Riverdale whether they’ll explain this or just drop it. There’s also a lot to be said about the difference between an explanation and an excuse.
There’s also a lot to be said about PTSD in Riverdale. I’m a bit reluctant of preemptively calling on Betty’s trauma re: her decisions about Archie, before it does become a recurring plot device in the show. Because so far 1) the only character whose trauma has been used as a plot device is Archie and because 2) generally, the show doesn’t do trauma consequences, since their premise is too fantastical to result in realistic backlash.
Everything about that shower scene is artificial. Including The Line(nowTM). In reality, we’ve seen 4 seasons of Betty not doing what she said in that line. In reality, people -whether in 2014 or 2021- do not not stay in any form of touch for 7 years. In reality, people who want to jump other people, don’t stay not in touch for 7 years only to boink the minute they meet: be it barchie or bughead. If barchie’s argument for hooking up is that Veronica is married and that Betty and Jughead haven’t talked for 7 years (OMG their ex’s are unavailable – what an endgame!), then why should Betty and Archie hide their relationship?
Is there a purpose in trying and rationalising one line, when there’s no rationalising the whole plot?
In terms of the show’s chosen narrative for 5x5, Betty post barchie sex is absolutely giddy, and never gives a hint of being in a bad place. She does actually say The Line(nowTM). These are her actions in 5x5 and they are presented without further context. This is a writing choice, and it’s the viewer’s choice to take 5x5 at face value and be annoyed at Betty or interpret it as part of a larger narrative -even if this narrative hasn’t unfolded yet (and might not even ever unfold, i.e: drop that plot!) and excuse her.
In this blog we like one Betty Cooper and one Jughead Jones. When they fuck up, we call it as it is while still anticipating to see them overcome their fuck-ups. At least so far!
It’s difficult to discuss a show, when you can’t tell if the narrative/characterisation is intentional or just the product of mediocre writing, so its anybody’s choice how to deal with things. I try to make the distinction between bad writing choices (f.e. sexism, stupid lines to create drama / establish precedents that weren’t there) and what is actually put in front of me. It’s certainly not any viewer’s obligation to do so.
The show’s erratic and mediocre writing and its tendency to drop plots (or lines) left and right, can be ultimately disengaging: 5x5 is not the limit for me, but if it is the limit for you, that’s perfectly fair.
I hope my debating skills were up to your standards, anon, because you seemed a bit worried in your ask. Take care.

Ok, so I haven't been able to comment much on my Riverdale rewatch mostly bc i'm watching it with my boyfriend and we have an agreement of no cell phones when we're watching, otherwise we can't pay proper attention to it. But I wrote down some notes about the episodes I did watch (I watched up until ep 6, which is very ironic bc apparently today is its anniversary, so yay for my perfect timing). I actually remember most of the stuff that happened in s1, so here's mostly a few things I paid more attention to or noticed about the characters and the ships, or things i'm able to look at through a different view now that i've watched all the seasons. Strap in if you want to see my notes, if not just scroll please, no ship or character hate here please. Also, feel free to ignore, this is really just a personal look in some stuff I didn't notice in my first watch.
- Betty's character used to be much happier and lighter in season 1. I know we're introduced to "Dark Betty" right in episode 3, but still, I feel like the way Lili played Betty in season 1 did not hold the same "darkness" as it does in the following seasons. The scene where she is dancing happily in her bedroom because she's going to homecoming with the boy she likes? The scene where she introduces Jughead to the Blue & Gold and gets him to work with her? Her genuine innocent happiness at seeing her sister again after so much time? The way she interacted with Kevin and Veronica? Those were all chef's kiss because she actually feels like a teenager in them. In all her girly glory, she radiates youth energy and it's a thing that was sadly lacking after s1. Btw this is not a critique at Lili's acting at all, I blame it entirely on Ras and his obsession with dark Betty.
- There's actually so many indications of Cheryl being a lgbt character in the first episodes that I have no idea how I missed it the first time. But then again, there were many indications with Veronica as well, and sadly that's not the path Ras chose for her.
- Jughead in s1 is truly so superior in so many ways that it's not hard to see why he quickly became such a fan favorite. I think even if he wasn't played by Cole Sprouse, he still would have conquered many fans' hearts. Sadly, the things that made Jughead such a loving and interesting character for me also fizzled out in s2 when the writing team decided to make him a woke serpent leader instead of allowing him to sticking to his true personality as a passionate mystery lover, a dedicated friend and very nerdy, which was very cute. I feel that we got some of that back for him in s4, which was good, but sadly s1 is where my love for him really stayed to stay. But I still care for him, and s5 has a promising storyline for him which i'm excited about, so let's see if s5 Jughead can become better than s1 Jughead.
- Going back again to Cheryl for a sec, I just noticed that the red lipstick actually wasn't that common for her in s1? At least not in the first five. I wonder when did it start becoming her trademark? Anyways, it's actually a really good look her and allows you to appreciate Madelaine's natural beauty even more.
- Also, did anybody notice how Alice lowkey figured out who killed Jason in ep 2 lmao, like... in episode two she legit says she wouldn't be surprised if the Blossoms themselves had killed Jason, which... is what happened LMAO, considering we know it was his father. And even more hilarious and tragically ironic note, in ep 6 she's laughing at Betty suggesting that Hal killed Jason because "do you think your father has the stomach for it?!"... Ma'am... i'm-.... 😂😂😂😂.
- This rewatch has reminded me of how much I adored and how I much I miss Josie and the Pussycats. The girls were such a nice addition to the cast, and their songs were so beautiful. I truly wish we get to see them again someday, but at the same time I also think the actresses deserve to be at a work place where they're given the treatment they deserve and not completely ignored and treated like extras.
- Archie/Valerie was super cute and is very underrated in the fandom, but i'm glad Valerie stood up for herself and didn't take any of Archie's or Cheryl's sh*t. Still sucks because they were really good together, though.
- Why was Jason not allowed to talk, lmao? Like, i'm sure it's become a running joke in the show at this point, but back when season one was airing what was the excuse for it? He appeared in so many flashbacks and scenes and we still never heard a single word ☠️☠️☠️☠️. I just want to know what was the reason lol.
- I liked s1 Reggie, but I feel like Charles Melton's Reggie is better because he actually feels like a douche with good intentions lol, and he has more of a personality. Most of the time I even forgot about Reggie in s1, but after s2 he definitely made me more aware of him. So for that, I like Charles Melton's Reggie more. But the actor from s1 still did a good job with what he was given.
From now on I will be talking about the ships, so bear with me, and know that I am a multishipper. Yes, I have my preferences. No, my word is not law, it's just an opinion, so please respect it.
- Bughead is still super cute in s1. I feel like from s1 they will always be my otp, even if I no longer feel as strongly about them now and have a different insight as to where I would like their story to go, and now I definitely see the problem others had mentioned before of how they kind of took over the show, which is something I kind of closed my eyes to before... But I really loved them in s1. It felt like a very juvenile teenage relationship, they didn't give much thought on why and if they should be together, they just went for it like teenagers usually do, and they were very very cute together.
- I feel like if you don't count Beronica (because they really were the best no matter what you say or ship), if there's a ship that deserves "best chemistry" award for s1 is probably Varchie. I lost my interest in them years ago, but this rewatch reminded me of why I actually loved them once. They never really became an otp for me, but Kj and Camila's chemistry in s1 was VERY GOOD, and I really liked them. Their kiss in the pilot was electric and the s&xual tension was OOF, and that chemistry carries on through the season. You can easily tell something will happen between them eventually. It makes me sad bc I don't know what happened after s1, but their chemistry from s2 onwards was just... not there for me. Which is ironic bc it's the season they truly started dating and they got a lot of smexy scenes, but I just... didn't feel it. But I'll leave that comment to my s2 rewatch. For now just let me enjoy Varchie's chemistry in s1 while it lasts because it was really good.
- Now we get to Barchie, who I made clear was the reason for my rewatch, so let's get to it. I LOVED the way Barchie was written in s1. I remember when I first watched Riverdale, I was curious about their dynamic but didn't put much thought into it because I loved Bughead too much and wanted them to be together, and I thought Barchie would be the traditional "first og ship" thing and wouldn't have a big follow up, but boy was I WRONG and am I GLAD for it. I'll talk more about their development in the next seasons when I get there, so for now let's focus a bit on s1. Just in like the first two episodes, there is so much Barchie foreshadowing, like, it's legit insane how it was right there in my face and I missed it the first time! "I have never felt what i'm supposed to feel with betty", "it's not my fault he doesn't like you", "I can't give you the answer you want"... Omg, those are obvious eyebrow raising "this will come back to bite you in the a$$" moments and it's incredible how they actually DO! I would call it clever writing, but like... it's Riverdale lol. So I really am just glad that the ship was done this way, i'm glad Barchie has the back story that they do, they've really come a LONG way and i'm happy I get to experience their whole growing storyline. It's also especially good because s1 actually provides you with scenes that show you their friendship and how they're so close, you see them hanging out, talking, their pictures together, everything was just really done well with them. Still have a bit of critique with the way Archie contradicted himself sometimes regardinf his feelings for Betty, but let's be honest, we've watched enough Riverdale to know that's just a problem with the writing.
- Kevin/Joaquin is still my favorite Kevin ship, i'm sad it's completely impossible to go back to them someday so for now i'll just be really glad it existed and that I got to see them even if it was short-lived. They had great chemistry and their kiss scenes always outsold.
- Beronica... sigh. Beronica. The most wasted chemistry i've ever seen on CW and I've watched a LOT of CW shows. There was so much potential there, s1 was practically overflowing with them and it's one of the reasons it became some popular. I remember when the Beronica fandom was the biggest one, ah, good times. Veronica and Betty were easily the best part of season 1, their friendship, their lowkey romantic moments, they were just superior in every way. This ship deserved better, not even just as a ship, but as a friendship.
- Veronica's s1 hair >>> Veronica's hair in seasons 2-4. I loved the side part and I am glad it's back in season 5, it looks so much better like that.
- Cheryl, as always, deserves better. Can't wait for her to meet Toni so I can watch again Cheryl finally get to love someone and be loved back, which is exactly what she deserves.
For now, that is all! I will probably make another post soon when i'm done with season one and from season two on I will be live-blogging the episodes since I will be watching it alone. Once again, pls, no hate, my thoughts are my thoughts. Peace.

I'm kind of with you on the lackluster Pilot episode of "The Perfectionists". I don't know whether or not I'm into it either. And not because of Emison (I'm more of an Emaya fan myself). I just thought it was cheesy and boring. I don't know if I should keep watching. What about you?
I have actually gotten several asks about whether I plan tokeep watching and why/why not. So I’m going to answer it here and just referback to it if it keeps coming up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t mind the asks at all. I love conversing, but because of the volume of asks about thisparticular opinion this is another long driveling post, and I’m sorry. You can mute my ass if you’re sick of me. I get it.
First of all OP, thank you for not ripping into me about notliking it. Also, Emaya had my heart. I loved them, too. Maya deserved better.
Second, this is a full-scale look at the show from a critic’svantage point. I watched the first episode twice because I thought maybe I hadn’tgiven it a fair shake the first time because I was in a weird mood. But even onthe second viewing I found a lot more that I disliked than I liked. Lots ofpeople are going to disagree, and that’s fine. Just don’t @ me. I’m legit notlooking for that. I’m just a girl (cue NottingHill music) standing in front her ask inbox asking those askers to love her.
Will I keep watching? I doubt it. Given that it only got a10-episode order and The Pilot wasn’t that interesting to me, I don’t see myselfsitting through it for 9 more episodes. My reasoning is two-tiered. Part of itis disinterest and the other part is the creative aspect of it in the media. Saddleup for my “truths” (I can’t remember who said that. Marlene maybe). I gave it afew days and considered it, and what I ended up with was this:
1) I’m just not into it. For the same reasons you (OP) stated. But I’ll also add that for me…it was predictable. I called the twists longbefore they happened. If I’m already doing that in The Pilot I can guarantee I’dbe doing that as the show went on. I’m like 93% sure I know exactly how it’sgoing to end this season. I tend to do that to myself. Being a writer suckssometimes. Because you see the way things are going to go from the beginning. You just have to decide if you want to go on the journey anyway.
2) While the characters were likable (I was surprised by howmuch I liked Ava), they are a bit one-sided and kind of bland (except I foundNolan’s duality extremely intriguing). There is the argument that can be madehere that they will grow, and I do agree with that. But when I watch a show’sPilot I need to care about at least one character to see what’s going to happenand where they are going to go (In PLL it was Em/Aria for me). None of the characters in TP did that for me (noteven Mona and Alison, which surprised me, because I’ve been super-hype for thisshow not only for them, but for the newbies, too).
3) The plot (so far) just feels like a rehash of everysingle YA mystery novel/TV show that is hot right now. And I am aware that thisis based loosely on exactly that (Sara’s series), but I think maybe I’ve justbecome desensitized to the same cheesy soap-opera-y murder mystery plots. Or perhaps I’m just desensitized to this particular kind of storytelling. It doesn’tfeel new and different to me and it was very strangely paced with too muchgoing on and not enough time to care about it. It just felt disjointed. Everythingabout the first episode just fell flat for me.
4) And lastly, yes, I’d say there is a tiny part of me…likemaybe…6% that doesn’t want to watch because I’m not about that off-screenEmison drama. I knew it was going to happen and I’m not mad about them beingsplit. I’m disappointed (hears “that’sjust ‘mom speak’ for mad!” echoing somewhere) that the marketing team isusing it for ratings. When you have decent writing you don’t need to play games like that to try andget viewers. It would be one thing to be decisive about what happened toEmily/Alison (Split them. Don’t split them. I don’t care. Just make a fuckingdecision because you’re creating a war between fans and you know it). It’sanother thing entirely to draw it out because you need people to watch and talkabout it.
I am also particularly bothered by hearing the excuse (several times by MK) that “Shay was busy”because Marlene literally planned the spin-off in season 6 (confirmed by bothher and Sasha). It. Was. Planned. I say this as a critic and not an Emison fan: Everything about the way they’ve tried to use Emison to generate buzz was underhanded. And saying shit like that opens the door for people to hate on Shay, and that’s really not cool.
Personally, I think it speaks volumes that the producers felt the need to addthe off-screen drama on top of the really decent plot they already had. Theycould have kept it unproblematic with simple writing choices and less inflammatorycommentary. They could have left the PLL drama in the PLL-verse and given thespotlight to the new drama. I don’tagree with creating old off-screen drama with zero chance of satisfactoryresolution all in the name of ratings. I hate marketing shit like that. It’s acheap amateur tactic and it turns me off.
I think the show could have been something special had theynot marketed it as PLL. But they did, so of course there was a certainexpectation. And of course there is some backlash. Because there are these twoworlds that have nothing to do with each other and so far I don’t feel likethey’ve blended it together well. For me, it was like watching PLL, but with less magic and less chemistry. If I had to describe it I’d say it feels alot like a recipe where you’re just throwing a bunch of ingredients into a bowlwith no idea what you’re making and you’re just hoping it’ll be edible by theend. Rather than focusing on the new universe the marketing team chose to focuson Ali/Mona’s new world and the drama that comes with them. And to me that almost says they don’t have faith that TPwould have been able to stand on its own without the PLL universe. Part of methinks I’d be more interested if this had been a completely fresh start. I wasactually more compelled by the newbies than I was Alison/Mona (though I adorethem, too).
That being said, I really wish the best for the cast/crew. I’llcontinue to watch the behind the scenes games/cast antics. I’ve been a fan ofSasha since I discovered PLL (everything about her seems very sweet and genuine andjust positive all around). And Janel as Mona was one of my favorite castingchoices of all time. In fact, I think my very first PLL post here was praisefor Janel. I’ve been following Sydney since she was a smol lil bean on theDisney Channel (and loved her in Tia’s Mowry’s show “Instant Mom”). Sofia seemslike a sweet girl, and I have enjoyed her other work. And Eli honestly justseems like he’d be a cool dude to kick back and have a drink with (is he evenold enough to drink? Jesus, they’re all babies). I love them all. In fact, I’veenjoyed the fun behind the scenes stuff more than I enjoyed the show. I’dwatch a reality show of them all day. That’s where I’ll get my fill. Watching them being goofy.
Final verdict: No, the show will not be getting my views. I’llprobably just watch the absurdity of Riverdale instead. Cheryl is fucking wild,y’all. And I’m kind of living for mean-dark-snarky Betty. And Sweet Pea is like…myfavorite character ever. My dumb asshole child.
As far as whether or not youshould watch it, I have no idea. I have a lot of people asking me my opinion onthat (which, I’m like the worstperson to ask, please don’t give me that responsibility. I don’t even likebeing responsible in the real world. I literally had a cookie and Cocoa Puffsfor dinner). I will say that if you’re only watching for Emison then I’d changethe channel. Because guaranteed it’s just going to make you rage. You’re not going to get anything out of it. Fill yourevenings with something more pleasant and positive for you.
And be nice to others on social media. At the end of the day, it’s only a show. You like it or you don’t.

1/ 2 I don't know if this makes any sense, but I'm watching Mad Men for the first time and am currently in the second season, when Don and Betty are separated and Sally constantly asks for her dad and clearly misses him a lot. I know bc of tumblr that they'll have a more strained relationship as she grows up, but anyway what I was thinking about is that I really love father/daugther relationships in fiction where the daugther feels neglected, and Sally and Don's relationship kind of reminds me
2/3 of that song Emily Blunt sings in Gideon’s Daugther. As you know, it’s about a daughter who feels neglected by her womanizing father, and that is something that fascinates me: a daughter seeing her father give so much attention to other women, but not to her, and how that may blur the lines of filial & romantic loves in her mind. And it reminds of Sally because she clearly yearns for Don’s presence and love, while he’s busy with affairs.
3/3 I’m only on the second season of Mad Men, so I don’t know if their relationship will continue to be interesting, especially because I know I’m already projecting a lot on something that offers very little, but that’s what my interests make me do! So if you have any other relationships like this in mind please share with us.
I’m hesitant to say too much about Don and Sally’s relationship because I don’t want to spoil you, but I always don’t want to give you the idea that there’s anything big to spoil, which there’s not.
You’re not alone in picking up on something. I spent the entire series waiting for /dreading something awkwardly incestuous to happen from Sally towards Don. Obviously when she was grown I would have had an interest in there being something canon there, but I didn’t want to see a child humiliating herself.
Nothing happened. Their relationship does become more strained as Sally sees Don more for who he really is, which is interesting in a different way. Their relationship is really unique on the show, because Don is motivated to care about her in a way that’s different from all the other women and people in his life (he can’t just brush her off or move on), and she’s the only one of the children who is a character in her own right.
The scene that struck me as the most suggestive in the entire series - and Anon you can ignore this paragraph if you want to but since Don/Sally hasn’t come up before I figured I might as well get all my main thoughts out - but it’s in one of the later seasons about Don goes to visit Sally at her boarding school. I think I have this right. And they go out to dinner together but a bunch of Sally’s friends join them. And Sally has the impression that all her friends are flirting with him and that he’s flirting back. I felt it was kind of ambiguous about whether that was really happening or not but that’s what Sally felt was happening. It was interesting - but not that surprising - that she would think that her friends would think he was hot. And that she would be thinking about him being interested in someone her same age.
I like the comparison to Gideon’s Daughter a lot. I was also thinking that the father/daughter relationship between William and Emily on Westworld is similar. These three fathers are all sort of existential-type characters living very independent lives with daughters who feel/are neglected. But I like the Gideon/Don comparison relating to all the women in their lives who are getting the attention that the daughters should be or feel like they ought to be getting instead. This is one of the dynamics that interests me most in father/daughter relationships.
Thank you for bringing this up!
