(i'm only on s6 so not sure what happens in s7 yet buuuuut)
the fact that Betty asked *Jughead* to go dig up the body under her mom's dining room is so indicative of all of the problems with Barchie.
literally the *episode* after Betty kills TBK and confesses how terrible she feels about what that says about her, Cheryl recommends killing Percival (a literal white supremacist demon) and Archie is like "that means we're evil, too." like! first of all, no, it literally doesn't. but second of all, Betty *just* told you she's worried that killing bad people under duress makes her an evil person.
the show itself explicitly addresses those issues so well, so many times (Cheryl's s4 'you're in love with the idea of Archie' speech; Betty and Agent Drake throughout s6). I'd be so sad if they named all of those fundamental incompatibilities only to have Betty end up with Archie. it feels like settling in such an uncomfortable way.
I'm forever a Bughead loyalist, but at this point I'm also, like... literally ANYONE but Archie.

Riverdale Opinions
My thing is this, how is B*rchie considered to be the more healthy couple, when it's obvious that Archie and Betty don't want the same things?
Archie wants the whole nine yards. White picket fence, 2.5 kids, a dog, and a housewife who stays at home popping out kids, running the house, and always cooking. I think he wants some idealized version of what he thought Fred wanted, as some kind of twisted way to honor his father's memory. I don't like it, and frankly it creeps me out. (Though I did love Fred. He was my third favorite character on the show after Jug and Betty.)
Through the show, Betty has been treated like shit by her whole family. She was practically groomed by her serial killer father. Neglected most times, and sometimes controlled by her mother. Mostly forgotten by her whore sister, and manipluated by her half-brother and his whore.
So, she doesn't want to have a family, at least not at this point. She's got so much baggage to work through. And Archie seems oblivious to that. Yes, I know he loves Betty, in his own way. But it's not a real, mature adult love. Honestly, it feels like a high school love, where it's mostly surface, where you're more in love with the idea of being in love.
Betty fits the line that Jughead likes to use to describe himself. "In case you haven’t noticed, I'm weird. I’m a weirdo. I don't fit in. And I don't want to fit in." (The only part that doesn't apply is the part about his beanie.)
There was a scene where Archie was talking shit about BDSM, I think, and he's talking about how he doesn't like it. How he thinks it's bad or something. And Betty's just sitting there, flashing back to when she wore the black wig, and when she used to dress up with Jughead.
Archie doesn't understand who Betty is. He has an idealized verision of her that he desperately wants her to be, but it's not who she actually is. He's more focused on trying to be the hero, than actually being there for his partner, or his supposed best friend.
Also, he doesn't respect Betty or her job as an FBI agent. When she wanted to work the case, he didn't want her to be involved. You can say that he was worried for her safety, and yes, that's true, but he needs to understand that she's an adult. She can make her own choices, and she also has FBI training. She knows how to use a gun, and she knows how to protect herself.
I just don't like him. His backwards thinking that Betty needs to be saved, and he needs to do the rescuing, makes me grind my teeth so hard.

i really hate writers/showrunners who COMPLETELY ignore the fans and the people who made their show what it was and the fans who deserve better!! like honor your characters and ships that watched your show, honor the fans because without us you wouldn't of even made it as long as you did!! your shows wouldn't exist without us!!!!

There’s something wholly infuriating about watching Betty Cooper belittle herself & act like her interests (& CAREER) aren’t important to her to make B*rchie happen. She doesn’t feel comfortable being herself in this relationship & yet she’s just accepting that it’s natural to hide who she is to be with Archie.
Fuck. All. Of. That.

Looking through my old screenshots I came across this old 2018 tweet of a Barchie fan
Tumblr media
Bare in mind, this is 2018. Around season 2, more or less.
Not to mention the COUNTLESS asks in the ask boxes of my fellow Bughead blogs here on Tumblr, such as @edgarsabandonedrocketship @stillhidden @i-know-you-can @middleagedresidentofriverdale @bugheadsfangirl and many others that promised us that "ratings and viewers will skyrocket with Barchie".
Mh.
So.
Let's look at the numbers, shall we?
These are the ratings and viewers during the Bughead/Varchie era:
Season 1
Tumblr media
Remember that the season was the first one, so nobody knew what the show was or what was the mood or anything. Keeping this in mind, it still did pretty good.
Season 2
Tumblr media
This season was objectively the best one, stable at 1 million viewers average, with minor downsides.
Season 3
Tumblr media
Objectively this season is the most irregular one, but still did pretty good considering the madness of it, keeping the show between 1 million and 800k viewers (with minor downsides, again).
Season 4
Tumblr media
Here too we can see that the decline was relatively normal, if not for two episodes: 4x12 which was a Katy Keen crossover episode (which, spoiler, nobody gave two shits) and the infamous 4x17 which lost 110k viewers in one week (plus the trama was leaked so everybody knew and didn't bother to watch). But everybody definitely hated the Barchie kiss (go check the reviews if you don't believe me. Plus it was another stupid musical so... draw your conclusions)
Season 5
Tumblr media
Now... I guess there's no need to describe what you're seeing here right? The show declined again, yes. But in the span of one season it lost 45% of it's viewers. Just look from season 4 première to season 5 première. And remember that 5x04 can be considered another "première", because it was first episode after the time jump, but again the show started hemorraging viewers. With barely more than 300k viewers watching the infamous finale.
Season 6
Tumblr media
And now. The famous season 6. The supernatural season. We're again seeing another huge decline. Another 45% decline in viewers. The second in the span of 2 years. That should tell you something. Not to mention that, this time, for the first time, the season finale is the less viewed episode. I wonder if the (already) trifling audience got spoilers beforehand. Mmmm 🤔
So... To summarize. Since Barchie happened, the views and the viewers dropped by 45% two times in two years and now the show that made roughly 1/2 million viewers now can't barely go over 200k anymore.
Thus I wonder... where's the horde of Barchie fans that was promised and who would have saved Riverdale? Where's the "increased ratings" that Barchie fans anticipated back in 2018. I can't see them. Quite the opposite, in fact.
The ship that was thought would have saved Riverdale actually sinked the show.
As my old friend Jughead would say

it's so fucking depressing watching Archie constantly yearning for someone Betty isn't. in the Bughead era, Betty still had anxiety about being a bad person in general, but she felt safe and seen and wholly loved in her romantic relationship. now, it feels like her romantic relationship with Archie is the *primary* source of that anxiety.
Barchie doesn't work as a grumpy/sunshine pairing!

Slight Riverdale endgame tangent
Riverdale's developing romance and endgame ships should've been:
Archie + Josie (Archosie)
Jughead + Tabitha (Jughead should've been aroace but if he has to be in a relationship, it should be Jabitha)
Reggie + Betty (Beggie)
Veronica + happiness
Cheryl + Toni (Choni)
I will die on this hill.
