The shrine was tiny. A very tiny thing, small enough perhaps for just one slender person to squeeze inside beside the narrow altar to get safely out of the rain. Or it must have been, once. The shrine’s roof had to pieces, and the sagging, broken roof can’t have kept out rain in decades. Wen Ning, like everyone else, had always known that it was there - but as there was no spiritual or resentful energy concentrating at it, and it was such a small shrine, the Wen sect was content to leave it alone. Seeing it now, it makes Wen Ning’s heart ache, a little. Like the shrine is as tiny and alone as he is, hiding here without anyone to care for it.
(“A-Ning, don’t be silly,” A-jie would say if she was here and saw him moping around. “If you’ve got enough time to be miserable then you have time to help,” she’d say, and give him dried herbs to sort and fill into sachets, or simple poultices to mix. But she had to go to the Nightless city, Uncle wanted his personal physicians to test A-jie’s knowledge of medicine because she’d been making a name for herself, even at fifteen years old. Wen Ning could have gone too, but the thought of spending a month within Wen Chao’s reach had been too frightening.)
It really is such a sorry, lonely looking shrine, the leaf litter and grime of years accumulating so that he can’t even make out the statue’s face. ‘If you’ve got time enough to be miserable, then you have time to help,’ his inner A-jie insists, so Wen Ning hurries home to gather supplies.
-
For all that it’s a small shrine, it’s dirty enough that it takes Wen Ning the rest of the day and multiple trips to the closest stream just to clean it all up. He has to get rid of the leaves and mud and dirt, and then scrub everything over three times just to get the years’ worth of accumulated filth off. It’s a bit sad that no one had cared in so long, but the cleaner it gets, the more obvious it becomes to Wen Ning that someone had cared once. The statue is beautifully made, a young man with a kind and gentle face, holding a sword in one hand and holding up his other hand with fingers curled like he’d been holding something with that hand as well. He hadn’t found any other object amongst the leaf litter that would fit. Perhaps someone had stolen it from the shrine? They’d probably taken the other artifacts of the shrine that also seem to be missing.
Wen Ning tells himself that it hardly matters, the shrine looks so much nicer already. While the shadows are stark, the crimson sunset sky doing little to pierce through the leafy canopy sheltering the shrine, but a few rays make it through, lighting up the gentle face of the statue. With a last polite bow, Wen Ning makes his way outside, leaving a silent promise to bring incense here when he can.
He’s not far from the shrine when he sees a butterfly, shining as if lit with moonlight. The moon won’t rise for hours more. The sun isn’t even fully beyond the horizon. And yet, it glows with a gentle white light, fluttering self-importantly. Unsure why, but able to gather that the butterfly wants him to follow it, Wen Ning does. They don’t go far before the butterfly finds what it’s looking for; a simple white flower. The gentle glow of the butterfly reflects off the flower, making it look rather otherworldly.
Wen Ning stares for a few moments, while the butterfly flutters insistently.
“F-for the shrine?” he asks, and the butterfly does a happy circle around the flower. Wen Ning kneels down to pick it.
The butterfly follows him all the way back to the shrine, and hovers like a night-pearl as Wen Ning settles the flower into the idol’s hand.
It fits perfectly.
(Appeased, the little creature flies up to rest atop the lintel, it’s glow fading to just a faint glimmer.)

Fic Finder
~*~
1. Hey Mojo! I hope you had a good New Year! I was wondering if you could help me find a fic. Basically instead of Wen Chao throwing Wei Ying in the Burial Mounds he has him killed and hung from his ribbon in Nightless City. Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji find him, but Wei Ying is a resentful spirit and ends of possessing Jiang Cheng (with his permission I think) in order to finally get his revenge on Wen Chao. I've been looking everywhere and its like the fic just disappeared. Thank you for your time!

2. Hi.  I'm searching for a fic which may or may not be a part of a series. What I remember is that LQR is teaching WWX and is irritated by him. WWX has also adopted A-Yuan. LQR is teaching because his core has some problem. It is a modern AU. IIRC LQR convinces WWX to write a thesis.  That is all I can remember. Thank you for your time and help.
FOUND!....LQR fic anon here, I found the fic I was looking for it's CSI: Gusu Edition by Stratisphyre (M, 39k, wangxian, lan qiren & wei wuxian, 3 works, series in progress)

3. Hii, id like to ask abt a fic wherein there's a problem with the whole mxy resurrecting wwx thing and because of that the ghost mxy kept on trying to kill wwx so that he can prevent a painful death. And it turns out that Wen Qing is alive and have saved WWX by transferring JC's core to WWX. huhu just cant remember the titleeee.

4. Hi! Hope you're having a lovely day and all is going well in the new year. I haven't really sent an ask (well ever) so I hope I'm not offending you but I've been looking for a fic for ages. It's set post canon and I remember a major plot point was that wei ying had a collection of (very sad!) letters he kept in a box addressed to lan zhan that he never sent. The box I believe was cursed, and I think ghosts were following him around, or at least lingering in the places he had frequented. Juniors were there as well, and Sizhui reads the letters which causes a sort of blow up, where he asks that if Wei Ying feels so awful on his own why couldnt he come to live with his family (this outburst and intrusion into his privacy I think is explored in a second part of a series?)  If you can help I would be super grateful!!!

10. hi mojo, thanks for your blog! I found some good fics thanks to you and so many reminders of great fics to re-read! If you have time, I'm looking for a WX fic that I read some time ago on AO3. Somebody (JC?) erased WWX from existence. The sunshot campaign happens, does not go well. Then WWX is summoned back, and teams up with NHS to fix the war. I think at some point JYL and babyJL are saved by WWX from being held hostage by the Wens. LWJ has missed WWX and joins the team. Hope you can find it! ~ @vasterthanempires

12.  Hiii! So glad you're back, hoping you have an incredible new year full of health and happiness! I was wondering if you or anyone might recognise this fic? It's a Canon AU, where Jiang Yanli and JGY become friends and he gets to hold Jin Ling, and I'm pretty sure it's a nobody-you-care-about-dies fic. I know there's a scene where JGY thinks about how powerful WWX is, but he knows WWX doesnt trust him so he plans to stick close to Yanli as like a "If i die, she'll be sad, so Wei Wuxian will protect me as long as I don't hurt anyone he cares about" deal. It's wangxian but i dont think the romance was the focus, more a bamf!WWX. Unfortunately thats all i can remember so any help would be really appreciated! ~ @warriorwerewolfheart

13.   Hello, I don't really remember much from the fic other than its a wangxian romance and I remember a scene when the two are in the library (as teens) and wwx asked lwj to read to him. The chapter (or maybe the whole fic) was from lwj's pov as he thought something along the lines of "nobody liked his voice and the other kids wouldn't listen when he read in class." Thank youuuu, if you can find it or just for looking anyway.

15.   Hello! I’m going in circles trying to find something I am very sure I read and did not imagine..Wangxian as members of a mountaineering club. 19.   Hi! I’m new to your blog (it’s been a god send by the way I’ve been stuck rereading my favorites) but I was hoping you could help me find a fic I forgot to bookmark? Basically it’s a pseudo time travel fix it but Adult LWG goes to the past meeting up with young WWX while young LWJ goes to the future meeting up with Adult WWX. Then the pairings switch places, then both pairings end up in future where they give advice and do the obligatory teasing! However it’s a bit different in the young Wangxian universe is a divergent universe. Something to do with the Nie family tree? I really hope you can find it! Swords are very important to the holder or user in the MDZS verse and hold a lot of weight. If you don't have one I guess you seem very disrespectful or an arrogant person similar to WWX. I wonder for a while that a lot of disciples practice sword technique and styles suited for them but how come I never really seem them practice hand to hand combat. I find it could be it could really be put to good use for self defense purposes. Note. I'm only a dongua watcher that is now just delving into the novel. I really find your meta interesting since they provide clarity. Also, how come NieHuisaung wasn't given the same energy when he also rarely brought his sword along
I may be mistaken but I believe it is the 'Cultivation Path' that is in question here. Most of the cultivators in MDZS follow the Sword Path. They cultivate their cores with their sword skills along with things like meditation and all.
When WWX stopped carrying his sword around (for good reason, he would've been challenged to a spar and his inability to fight with it would reveal everything), people took it as him believing his new cultivation was superior to their traditional path.
It is important to remember that WWX was one of the best of his generation. He matched LWJ, he was forth on the list of young masters, he has never been shown to lose when he has a sword in his hand. So if the best of them thinks his new Cultivation is better, what kind of message does it send to the people weaker than him?
As for hand-to-hand combat, I believe they do recieve from training in it. Their education seems fairly well-rounded. Cultivators develop skill to handle supernatural threats. They're not really cultivating to engage in one-on-one hand-to-hand combat with ghosts, demons, and corpses. So it makes sense that swordsmanship, archery, and talisman arts are more useful than hand-to-hand.
Finally, on the matter of NHS. The difference is that NHS is no cultivator prodigy. He has disappointed everyone's hopes in him a long time ago, lmao. He's not the bright young master with a stellar track record for being brilliant at everything. He isn't well-known for his skills. So it is no surprise if NHS doesn't carry a sword. It is actually expected of him because he has already disappointed those hopes.
That is what NHS uses to ruthless advantage after NMJ dies.

...goddamn, I’m still thinking about this wen ning-su she swap AU, because the question occurred ‘if you can use demonic cultivation without a core, and awakened fierce corpses seem pretty similar to humans aside from the lack of spiritual energy... could an awakened fierce corpse use demonic cultivation?’
anyway in this ‘verse WWX decided to go on a little sabbatical to the Burial Mounds to meditate or something, and then wound up staying there because the pressure for him to Stop Being Him kept growing and him and Jiang Cheng’s relationship was becoming more strained; this was still meant to be temporary but it gets complicated when rumors spread that he’s starting a sect based on demonic cultivation, and wwx is like ‘lol no I’m not?’ only to poke his head out of the cave he’s been napping in and find out that sms has returned from wherever he went to brood last and has been recruiting people that show up as disciples
screaming arguments happen where sms is like I’M SORRY FOR ATTEMPTING TO GET US MANPOWER WHEN WE’RE ABOUT TO GET ATTACKED ANY DAY NOW and wwx is like STOP TELLING PEOPLE THINGS AND SAYING I SIGNED OFF ON THEM oh wait i’ve packbonded with some of these losers you brought in now. i guess i’m a bit more ok with it
(jgy is currently hiding the whole wen fam in his basement and repeatedly hurrying his assistant, a-ning (who definitely isn’t a wen who thinks he looks like  a wen? don’t be silly) away from jin zixun before things go bad on either side)
I’m seeing wwx’s death in this ‘verse either being a modified Qiongqi Path - there’s no Hundred Holes Curse in this scenario, but look, I REALLY don’t think you need to try hard to make jin zixun want to try and take out wwx; and it would be so easy to play a scenario where wwx and sms argue about him going, causing wwx to slip off to go alone and get caught without backup--or some kind of scenario where the Jin kidnap one of the Yiling Wei’s younger disciples and use them as bait for wwx to come over and get killed. either way, he still dies around the same time, but sms--and the rest of the sorta-sect--still have demonic cultivation on their side, and they successfully defend the Burial Mounds against siege. everyone thinks about their life choices for a bit, someone yells ‘we’ll get ‘em next time, boys!’ and we cut to 13-16 years of very very uneasy peace
(in this scenario you could TOTALLY still have at least jiang yanli, and maybe even jin zixuan, alive if you wanted! just realized that.)
(in the wwx-is-dead interim, wen ning assists jgy in killing nmj quick n’ sweet with some untraceable poison or something. rip nmj. wen ning is also REALLY useful in knocking people out for ‘assassinations’ to be conducted by ‘outside forces’, etc. he also gets along great with all the kids! great guy)
i could see sms as, before wwx’s death, basically trying to pretend he hadn’t died (don’t read into the amount I cover up or the fact I never use qi in public anymore! I still carry a sword AND my robes are wrapped the right way. shut up) but after, leaning ALL the way into the oldstyle Yiling Patriarch, nightmare of the battlefield aesthetic. the Yiling Wei have almost a Ghost Valley rep--are they human? are they demons? we just don’t know, etc; and sms gets ALL the atmospheric mileage he can out of being Actually Legit Dead. god. he’d probably get some kind of White Grim Reaper moniker and encourage the fuck out of it. wwx is going to die of secondhand embarrassment when he comes back to life and sees how edgy everyone’s aesthetic is
(look I don’t know HOW this happens exactly but in this AU i need jin rusong to live also. usually I don’t really care but I just reread what i wrote above and pictured Wen Ning--possibly not able to see his family all that often because jgy got them settled somewhere safe, but rather out of the way, and he has duties in Jinlintai--bonding with jgy’s kid, and my heart is FULL i need this)
also there’s so much delicious tension in the idea of WWX coming back to a world where the Yiling Wei/Burial Mounds are an entity, and are locked in a vicious semi-cold war with Lotus Pier (sms would Absolutely capture and torture jiang disciples as retaliation for losing his demonic cultivators) meanwhile LWJ is. still just trying to do his thing, waiting to see if wwx’s spirit ever shows up, wishing he didn’t really fucking hate everyone else who used to know wwx

Hi! Am rereading your shattered mirrors verse and I love it so much. Are we going to get the scene in which WWX explains everything that’s happened to him (with the poison) etc to LWJ after they meet wen yuan?? I’m dying for the angst but also fluff and comfort 🥺🥺🥺
@lurkingscientist asked:
I can’t wait to hear about all the sad things wwx experienced!!! :D my “stabby stabby stab stab stab” is feeling slightly neglected
Shattered Mirrors #61
“I haven’t told you everything.”
In the thirteen years Wei Wuxian had been gone, Lan Wangji searched desperately for every scrap of information he could get his hands on, from every channel he could access, in hopes of finding him. Or finding out what had happened to him. What he could find was piecemeal at best and unreliable at worst, often conflicting depending on the source. The result was him, driven mad by desperation and grief, chasing ghosts in the shadows until he could no longer tell what was real.
Even now, with Wei Wuxian back at his side these last two years, happy and content and safe, he still does not have a clear picture of what had happened during the war. If he’s being honest, he’s afraid to ask, and even more afraid to know. He tells himself it’s enough just to have Wei Wuxian by his side again. He doesn’t need to know, if Wei Wuxian does not want to share.
So Wei Wuxian’s confession punches the air from his lungs and he feels in its wake, his hands trembling where they’re entwined. Wei Wuxian watches him with the same care one would give to a startled animal ready to flee.
“That is,” he amends hesitantly, “if you wish to know.”
Lan Wangji inhales, and exhales again, with a shudder. Squares his shoulders. Looks him in the eye.
“Yes,” he says. “I do.”
It is Wei Wuxian’s turn to take a deep breath, the tentative little smile on his lips giving way to steely resolve. On his other side, Wen Yuan kneels by the bed, wordlessly offering his unwavering support. Despite all this, it takes Wei Wuxian some time to find the right words to convey the enormity of what he is about to disclose.
“I don’t know where to begin,” he admits with a shaky laugh, looking down at their joined hands. “I suppose you already know how Yunmeng fell.”
Lan Wangji nods. He has heard scattered details, enough to know that there had been a traitor in their midst, someone who had fed false information through their intelligence network while Wei Wuxian had been in Gusu. They had managed to secure Yunping, but sustained heavy losses that severely weakened their defences. The traitor had been found, but by then the Qishan Wen army was already at their doorstep, ten thousand strong, and they had no way out.
“We evacuated as many civilians as we could. Jiang Cheng, Jiang-wang and Yu-wanghou stayed behind to defend the city,” he says. His eyes and voice are distant, lost in his memories. “I took Shijie and we escaped via the lakes, with the rest of the civilians. Our priority was to get to Yunping, and then to Lanling. Shijie was engaged to Jin Zixuan, so they would definitely come to our aid—or at the very least, they would keep her safe while I gathered reinforcements.
“They were there,” he continues, still in that far-off voice. “Wen Chao and his men. They had split their forces to ambush us while we were defenceless. Our boats were burned, our people drowned—we in Yunmeng are strong swimmers, but even the strongest swimmers cannot survive when arrows rain down from the sky.”
He shivers with his next breath, but his voice is steady.
“I entrusted Shijie to my lieutenant, instructed them to use one of the overturned boats to cover their escape, while I distracted Wen Chao.” He smiles, but it’s stark and without humour. “We’ve had…altercations in the past, so I knew I would be an adequate distraction. I held him off for as long as I could, kept his attention on me. But I was only one person, and he had an army.”
The reports that had come out of Yunmeng around that time—the ones Lan Xichen had allowed him to read while recovering from his punishment, at least—had painted a picture so bleak, so devastating that he had wept. The lakes of Yunmeng, once teeming with colour and life, stained red with blood over the course of one night; and Lotus Pier, its seat of power, that had once risen from the depths of the lakes like a mirage, burned to ash. He had been back to the ruins of Lotus Pier in the intervening years as it was slowly rebuilt after the war—Gusu had offered aid wherever possible, in both money and manpower, as well as political support for the Yu family of Meishan, the maiden family of Queen Yu Ziyuan, who had been installed as stewards in the absence of the ruling family—but the shadows of war still haunts its streets and darkens its waters even now.
Wei Wuxian’s eyes fall closed and his fingers tighten around Lan Wangji’s.
“There’s a stronghold in Yiling,” he says. “Some call it the Burial Mounds, or the Mass Grave. Beneath the fortress, there’s an extensive network of cells that run beneath the mountains. That’s where they keep their highest security prisoners, the ones who get…special treatment.”
There is no need to ask what ‘special’ means, so Lan Wangji stays silent. His blood, however, runs cold—as cold as Wei Wuxian’s voice as he continues his narrative, detached.
“Wen Chao had a special—” that word again, spoken with such venom that it curdles in Lan Wangji’s stomach and burns his throat, “cell prepared. More a cage, really. Every second shichen, it would be submerged in water up to the neck, and stay there for another shichen until it was raised again. In the interim, the prisoner would be left soaking wet in the cold, damp cell.”
The memory of Wei Wuxian at the water’s edge, the frantic terror on his face as he struggles to breathe despite not having come into contact with it, the frailty, the susceptibility to cold and illness—it is all starting to fall into place, one horrifying piece at a time. But Wei Wuxian is not finished.
“There were beatings, of course.” A sudden, fierce anger wraps around Lan Wangji’s heart at the matter-of-fact way in which he says it. “Wen Chao always did have a sadistic streak. He liked to hang people up by the arms and have them whipped, or burned, or flogged. Sometimes he’d leave them there for more than a day, weighed down at the ankles, blindfolded, while they tortured others around them.”
A hand extricates itself from Lan Wangji’s death grip and peels back the edge of a sleeve to reveal the scars along his arms. Dozens of them, some longer and thicker, others as thin and fine as thread, criss-cross along the pale flesh. As he traces quivering fingers along the skin, Lan Wangji feels each cut, each slice, on his heart. Then Wei Wuxian turns his hand over, revealing a large, pale scar on the inside of his wrist, and a matching on on the other, too precise to be self-inflicted. He inhales sharply in realisation.
“Your hands—” he chokes, eyes wide as he stares at the scars. “He didn’t—”
Wei Wuxian lets the sleeves fall back down to cover the scars.
“If you fight back,” he explains woodenly, “they cut the tendons in your wrists and ankles. They’ll send a doctor to look over your injuries, of course. There is no benefit, no value, in a dead prisoner of war. That’s how I met Wen Qing and her brother, Wen Ning.”
“My aunt and uncle,” Wen Yuan, who has been silent until now, explains. Lan Wangji had almost forgotten his presence. He smiles sadly. “They were taken by my great-uncle as hostages to ensure our branch of the family supported the war effort, and served as doctors on the front lines.”
Wei Wuxian’s lips curl into a smile—not the harsh, bitter ones from before, but softer, tinged with grief.
“They took care of me,” he says. “Wen Qing was the best doctor in all of Qishan. There was no illness she could not cure, no injury she could not fix. And Wen Ning…Wen Ning was the kindest person I have ever met. Too kind, too gentle for war. They did their best to help me—slipped me medicines and food whenever they could, diverted Wen Chao’s attentions away from me when it got too much.”
His voice wavers and breaks.
“They died trying to get me out,” he says hoarsely. “First Wen Ning, then Wen Qing. And I couldn’t—I couldn’t do anything to save them—”
Lan Wangji gathers him into his arms, crushes him against his chest as he cries out in anguish, his body wracked with sobs. His own eyes are hot, and he sees Wen Yuan’s are also bright with unshed tears when their gazes meet over Wei Wuxian’s head. They stay like this until he quietens, curled in Lan Wangji’s embrace, eyes hollow and wrung out. Lan Wangji is about to suggest that they continue this another day when Wei Wuxian rouses himself with a shaky breath, and continues.
“They killed Wen Ning in front of me,” he says. “And then they forced Wen Qing to take the same deadly poison they had been using to experiment with on us—”
“Qianji poison,” Lan Wangji says before he can stop himself. Both Wen Yuan and Wei Wuxian turn to him in shock. He lowers his eyes. “You fell ill after your performance at Caiyun Pavilion,” he tells Wei Wuxian. “I had a physician brought in to see you.”
He is careful to leave out Mo Xuanyu and Madam Zhang’s involvement, but Wei Wuxian is not fooled. But rather than get angry, as they had feared, he only shakes his head and laughs.
“I should have guessed,” he says. “They always liked to make a fuss.”
“They care about you,” Lan Wangji chides him gently. “And I am glad they told me, so I was better prepared to take care of you like I promised.”
This time when Wei Wuxian turns into the cradle of his arms, it is out of exhaustion, as if a great weight has been lifted from his chest, and his eyes drift closed as Lan Wangji strokes his hair with gentle motions. There is still more to the story, Lan Wangji knows—and there are questions burning in his mind. But he feels the sag of Wei Wuxian’s body against his, the heaviness of his breath, and cannot bring himself to press him further. They have time. After a moment of silence, when Lan Wangji thinks him asleep, he stirs.
“I’m tired,” he murmurs. “So tired.”
“You’ve done well, Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji reminds him. “Get some rest.”
Wen Yuan excuses himself as Wei Wuxian hums and nestles deeper into his arms. Lan Wangji nods at him gratefully and watches him leave, keeping his movements quiet so as to not disturb Wei Wuxian’s rest.
“I think I’ll close my eyes for a while,” Wei Wuxian agrees, his words already starting to slur. “I just need…a little break.”
Lan Wangji presses a light kiss on his forehead.
“Take all the time you need,” he says. “I’ll be here when you wake.”

For renouncement verse; I just binge-read all the ficlets instead of doing assignments and I'm so! overwhelmed! by how easily lwj displays his love for wwx. So can we get lwj being sick/hurt/in some situation where wwx gets all protective of him (and the children?) and just, idk, HUSBAND FEELS
anon 1: Renouncement verse: they are night-hunting together and lwj gets injured? Or lwj comes back from a night hunt injured?
anon 2: Renouncement verse. LWJ is injured. It makes his husband and children very concerned and over-protective.
anon 3: Arranged marriage au! lwj or wwx getting sick/hurt and the other taking care of them :DD
anon 4: prompt for the arranged marriage wangxian au!!!! CUDDLING AND HURT-COMFORT THATS IT SEND TWEET, brain empty nothing but wangxian, maybe like wwx gets hurt doing something stupid idk anyway i love you and your writing is incredible :)
(brief author’s note: please please reblog if you can, since that’s how we get prompts for future updates!)
The last time Lan Wangji was wounded on a night-hunt, he was not quite thirty, and found himself distracted when the haunts he was fighting feinted towards the disciples standing behind him. It hardly comes as a surprise when the same thing happens again nearly a decade later; the snake demon darted towards Sizhui two seconds before Lan Wangji would have sliced its head off with Bichen, and distracts him just long enough to sink its teeth into the meat of his thigh.
Snake yaoguai don’t tend to be poisonous, as a rule, but this one is, and by the time Lan Wangji is carried a few hundred yards from the demon’s den, his delirium worsens so sharply that he can scarcely recognize the faces around him. Sizhui is there, and Jingyi, though Lan Xichen sends them away as quickly as he can—and then there is Wei Ying, who shouldn’t be here because the serpent demon is still after them, and Wei Ying cannot fly—
“Run,” Lan Wangji pleads, trying to push his husband back. “Wei Ying, go!”
“I’m fine,” he hears Wei Ying say, speaking through a throat swollen with tears, and Lan Wangji cries out in pure anguish because his beloved will not leave him no matter how desperately Lan Wangji begs him to.
And then Wei Ying screams his name, and Lan Wangji wails out loud at the realization that his husband is gone, gone, and it’s his fault. He has lost Wei Ying, and Lan Wangji stumbles in the direction of his voice before someone grabs him and drags him away, forcing him back down onto a bed.
“Wei Ying!” he sobs, howling at the top of his lungs when his fingers close around empty air. “Wei Ying, answer me! Please, beloved, please!”
But no answer comes, and Lan Wangji sobs himself hoarse until he can no longer speak because his very life has been ripped away from him, gone beyond all hope of saving when the yaoguai snuffed out Wei Ying’s. There will be no one to bring him back this time, no one to sacrifice body and soul and summon Wei Ying for the sake of justice unfulfilled, and Lan Wangji sinks into darkness with that knowledge tearing his heart into pieces before it shatters completely.
“No,” Lan Wangji whispers, as the last echoes of his husband’s sweet voice fade into nothingness. “Come back, xingan. Come back…”
____
“And it’s out of him now, Xichen-ge? You’re sure?”
“He ought to wake in an hour or two. I’ve cleared as much of the venom as I can, and the rest ought to pass through his kidneys.”
“Why does he keep crying? I—I’m—I don’t know anything about snake demons, we only ever got tiger yaoguai and boar ghouls in Yunmeng, and I was bait for a shark ghost once, but—”
“A-Xian, calm down. This particular type of serpent causes delirium in its natural state, there’s a farm about two hundred li away that milks them for anesthetic. He’ll be fine as soon as his thigh heals, and the wounds have already begun to close—see?”
Lan Wangji hears a hiccuping sob, then. “I do see.”
Xichen and Wei Ying keep talking over his head, which he cannot understand just at first; it is far past mao shi, or at least he guesses so from the angle of the sun on his face, and Wei Ying is crying with every word, pressing kisses to Lan Wangji’s limp hands and his forehead and every other part of him not covered by the sheets and blankets.
“What happened?” he tries to mumble. But his lips feel heavier than iron when he tries to move them, and in the end he slips back into unconsciousness until late that afternoon, when he opens his eyes to see Wei Ying leaning over his head with a wet handkerchief in his hand. His husband is bathing his brow and cheeks, patting away the sweat and anointing each patch of clean skin with his lips, and Lan Wangji’s heart melts on the spot at the sight of him.
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji rasps, as his beloved pulls him into his arms and bursts into tears. “Wei Ying, what—”
“You got bitten by a snake demon!” Wei Ying yells, shaking him by the shoulders. “You stupid man, I told you not to leave me behind, and you almost—you could have—”
“How could I have taken you?” he whispers. “You—how could I put you and the little one in such danger, xingan? I would rather give my life a hundred times over than do such a thing!”
“You almost did!” his husband shouts, before falling into another fit of sobs. “Never do that again, you hear me?”
Wei Ying scolds him through his tears for another ten minutes, and then he brings Lan Wangji a bowl of his favorite soup—vegetable broth boiled with fresh bamboo shoots and cabbage, with tofu and delicate pepper-seasoned glass noodles for strength. Lan Wangji only has to part his lips for the spoon and chopsticks, because Wei Ying refuses to let him eat by himself; he puts every morsel into Lan Wangji’s mouth with his own sweet hands, even the last few shreds of scallion clinging to the bottom of the bowl, and then he bathes Lan Wangji’s face again and rubs the blood back into his feet before wrapping them up in a pair of warm woolen socks.
“Promise you’ll be more careful next time,” Wei Ying murmurs, after Lan Wangji eats his fill and bakes in front of the kitchen fire for a while. “Please, Lan Zhan.”
And then A-Yuan comes in, his face as red as a winter plum, and bawls into Lan Wangji’s neck like the baby he was when he first clung to him in a crowd eighteen years ago—and then Xiao-Yu toddles into the jingshi after his sobbing xiongzhang, crying loudly enough to wake the whole compound as he wriggles into his father’s lap next to Sizhui and wipes his nose on Lan Wangji’s shoulder.
“A-Yu was scared!” the baby wails, clinging to his sleeve with his tiny dimpled fists. “A-Die, don’t go away! Don’t leave A-Yu and Yuan-gege! Protect A-Niang, and A-Lan—A-Die promised!”
“I’m not going anywhere,” Lan Wangji vows, gazing at his husband over their children’s two precious heads with his very soul in his eyes. “I’ll never leave you, sweetheart. Never.”
(And then Wei Ying is in his arms, too, and Lan Wangji’s world attains perfection all over again.)

MDZS fics i treasure (2)
parts 1, 2, 3
The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane
[explicit, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 71k, complete]
one of the classics. this is also the fic that got me into the whole mdzs fandom. i literally just searched up kid fic on ao3 and this one seemed promising... so i read it without knowing who tf lan wangji or wei wuxian are... fast forward a few months later and all i can think about is “wangxian are married and have a son.” THEY’RE MARRIED AND HAVE A SON. now take that knowledge and add in modern wangxian as university music students who get married to take care of a-yuan and you’ve got yourselves this brilliant fic. also, i did not know you can endlessly pine for your own husband but with wangxian, anything’s possible
Neatly Arranged by thunderwear
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, jiang yanli/jin zixuan, 45k, complete]
yes. i love arranged marriage wangxian fics okay ! they’re my guilty pleasure. this one’s unique because lwj’s actually bethrothed to jiang yanli and jin zixuan’s bethrothed to wwx which is actually kind of funny especially when jzx asks lwj if he wants to switch. it does get angsty but there’s a happy ending !
Night of Sixth Magnitude Stars by Leffy
[mature, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 22k, complete]
modern au with student lwj and teacher wwx although it’s only for the first chapter. THIS FIC. OH MY GOD. i literally got tricked, i thought it would be lighthearted and fluffy but the angst (specifically for wwx’s character) broke my heart. THE PLOT IS AMAZING, PLEASE READ IT
one good thing by Yuu_chi
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 26k, complete]
this one’s a classic, one of the first few mdzs fics i read and i absolutely love it. modern au with ghost wwx and house owner lwj *squeals* IT’S SO FLUFFY... and then gets quite a bit angsty at the end, i swear your heart stops at that scene. anyway it’s such a good read sigh,,, might re-read
Pigtail Pulling by protos_metazu_ison
[general, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 3k, complete]
whenever i’m feeling down, this fic always manages to cheer me up. it’s very lighthearted, just fluffy wangxian in cloud recesses: wwx teasing lwj and lwj teases back and absolutely flusters wwx. it’s just SO CUTE
Rush Hour by Ulan
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 3k, completed]
basically modern wangxian in public transport, pressed up against each other, with a dash of protective lwj and damsel in distress wwx. warning, there is minor sexual assault but the rest is just fluffy wangxian <3
seldom all they seem by Fahye
[explicit, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 24k, complete]
yes... another arranged marriage fic... i have nothing to say for myself. but this one’s just the usual fic with lwj finding wwx annoying at first and then pining so hard afterwards once he realizes wwx is his entire world. the author also changed the wwx escaping with the wens scene and OH MY GOD THEIR VERSION *chef’s kiss*. READ IT !
silhouettes to steal this night by moonsteps
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 51k, complete]
MODERN WANGXIAN AS ASSASSINS/HITMEN AND ROOMMATES. WHAT MORE DO I NEED TO SAY. guys, they just flirt every time they’re assigned to the same hit i am literally crying. top tier fic as expected from moonsteps (read the rest of their works you won’t regret it at all).
so you’ve been robbed by a museum by yukla
[mature, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 5k, complete]
immortal cultivators wangxian in the modern world !! to summarize, wangxian somehow does *not* get their shit together in the ancient times and pine all the way into the 21st century until lwj sees an entire section of paintings of himself hanging in the museum... you can guess whose yearning-induced artistic creations those are ;)
soft-hearted by @sarah-yyy
[general, lan wanji/wei wuxian, 6k, complete]
are you wondering what happens if child lwj found child wwx in the streets and brought him back to gusu with him? this. this is what happens: SOFTNESS, FLUFF, AND WWX CALLING GEGE. i literally didn’t know how much i need childhood friends to lovers wangxian until i read this and every time wwx called lwj gege? hello? i was pretty sure i was going to burst into flames if i kept screaming. also, read the author’s wangxian rebuttable presumption verse on their page bc it’s absolutely genius oh my god i’m never going to shut up about the rp verse
take yourself home by ribena
[mature, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 26k, complete]
okay, this one is HEAVY. like you would seriously just want to wrap wwx in a blanket and feed him soup kind of heavy. to summarize, radio host lwj keeping plant dad wwx company with his voice and then himself once he moves into the same apartment as wwx. honestly, this one hits home for me, it will definitely make you sob but the ending is so hopeful and i need a sequel of just plant dads wangxian being domestic
tame by rikke
[mature, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 11k, complete]
IMAGINE IF LWJ DID NOT LEAVE WWX AFTER THE XUANWU CAVE. just imagine oh my god, maybe they would’ve gotten their feelings resolved faster... or hatched a baby xuanwu, and wait what? yes, you read right. this fic is about xuanwu dads wangxian in yunmeng, it’s fluffy and funny and just a perfect lighthearted read if you’re having a bad day
The Fire Lapping Up the Creek by notevenyou
[explicit, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 66k, complete]
in which wwx travels to lanling alone for jin ling’s one month celebration and gets heavily injured, cue in very heavy hurt/comfort. warning, there’s major illness and surgery in this fic. so basically, lwj stays in the burial mounds to guard wwx and the wens while wwx recovers from his injury. LISTEN, burial mounds husbands wangxian and heavy hurt/comfort, what more do you need. go read it
The Lotus Defense Society by mondengel
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, jiang yanli/jin zixuan, 3k, complete, only available for registered users of ao3]
i have lost count of how many times i’ve read this one, i love it so much. lwj and jzx bond over their mutual pining for wwx and jyl and accidentally starts a cult with nhs to prevent unsuitable people from courting them. where do i even begin with this fic, it’s literally so amazing !! very crack-y, my favourite line is “Young Master Jin!  It’s Lan Wangji! He’s enacting Phoenix Mountain Part 2!” and then what happens after is my favourite scene
the secret ingredient by queen_gee
[teen and up, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 8k, complete]
WWX BAKING FOR LWJ WHO HAS A SWEET TOOTH OH MY GOD I AM SOBBING. modern college/university wangxian with lots of pining and baking, i am literally banging my head against a table this is the sweetest fic, but they’re also idiots in love so there’s some light angst but you’ll literally melt at the ending !!
The Trials and Tribulations of a Modern Father by Bgtea
[teen and up, lan xichen/jiang wanyin, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 24k, complete]
written in jiang fengmian’s pov where jfm realizes jiang cheng attracts a lot of attention from... old men. cue in lan xichen and his charming smile and this spells trouble to jfm so he enlists wwx’s help in operation protect jiang cheng. endgame xicheng with side pairing wangxian, this is absolutely cute and very humorous
with you, I am home by tellthemstories
[mature, lan wangji/wei wuxian, 47k, complete]
MODERN CULTIVATORS WANGXIAN DECIDE TO FAKE DATE *SCREAMS*. slow burn (but not if you read it fast enough), the way they are so domestic in this one oh my god, a LOT of oblivious wwx, and lwj meeting the family. i’m a sucker for fake dating fics and this one is just SO right. i’m urging everyone to read it for self-care

Fic Idea that won’t let me live
So, I don’t know how big the Untamed/mdzs fandom on tumblr is, but oh well.
Imagine a time travel au where:
After Wwx jumps to his death (or torn apart) [depending on the verse one uses] the Stygian tiger amulet sends him back.
But if you mix in a bit of the Untamed and have Wen Rouhan sent back as well because of the 3 yin iron pieces.
The amulet shows WRH the timeline before and after his death and what leads up to wwx’s demise.
He has three options:
He finds wwx and “kidnaps” him.
Searches for wwx to kill him
Continues on with his own life until the discussion conference where they do the archery competition
Now, let me tell you some baselines for the 1st option:
Wei wuxian is taken to Nightless City (doesn’t matter the time stamp as long as it’s before the cloud recesses burning) [or maybe a little after it]
He is to develop demonic cultivation while WRH is manipulating him.
(Like reminding him that their common enemy is the sects. The sects will betray him, stuff like that)
Or, during the cloud recesses arc. WRH comes to Gusu and quietly threatens Wwx that he will reburn Lotus Pier if he doesn’t come willingly. Tells Lan Qiren not to interfere as he takes the head disciplie of one of the five great secs.
Bonus points for this one
Lotus pier under constant threat if Wwx messes up
Wwx constantly back talking the chief cultivator (everyone constantly having heart attacks because of this)
Constantly bonding with the souls that are trapped in the palace.
Does he cause nightmares to the main family? Yes but who can prove it?
Bromance between Wen Ning and Wei Ying and Wen Qing.
Badass Wei Wuxian
Wwx is allowed trips to the Burial Mounds with Wen Zhuliu who is constantly disgusted and secretly terrified of this guy.
Option two: Searches to kill him.
That. So once he hears about being wanted, Wwx leaves behind YunmengJiang and on the run.
He will most likely either have to go to the burial mounds or he’ll go somewhere else.
(I don’t have much ideas on this)
(Time frame doesn’t matter, either than it has to be before the indoctrination)
Bonus points for this option (all are optional)
King and father of ghosts wwx
Demonic cultivation sect
Dafan Wens are safe and happy with Wwx
Overpowered wwx
No war but constant threat. (QishanWens are overthrown by mystery figure and Wen Qing becomes sect leader)
Crossover with either SVSS or HOB
Option 3: waits until archery competition.
After the competition ends, Wen guards take Wwx under false pretenses to keep the disciples from fighting against them.
Announces the winner as “Yiling Patriarch Wei Wuxian”
Mass confusion for the title and wondering why Wwx is bound by chains and forced to kneel in front of the Chief Cultivator.
+ more confusion on them talking about past/future events.
“Been awhile now, Yiling Patriarch”
“Yes, last time I saw you, you were backstabbed quite literally by a snake.”
Secrets? Were we supposed to be keeping the time travel a secret?
Why is Wen Rouhan allowing Wei Wuxian to speak disrespectfully to him? And what’s this about Wwx being abandoned by the great sects? Why does Wrh keep asking Wwx if he’s going to destroy them? Why isn’t Wwx denying it? Stop deflecting!
“Ah, yes, the living constantly making demands from the dead.” @ Jin Guangshan who became impatient and demanded for an explanation.
Bonus points for third option, (all are optional)
Marriage proposal btwn Wwx and Whr (proposed by whr)
Overpowered wwx
Father to ghosts wwx (so if they marry, whr is father to ghosts as well)
Wwx does not care for the sects (well, he cares for some)
Twin girls for the yin hufu spirits
Constant confusion
Pining lwj and wondering what happened to wwx
Murder mysteries thrown into the mix
Wwx constantly traveling between lotus pier and burial mounds when he can. + cloud recesses and burial mounds.
Waterborne Abyss being done the same except for the fact that Wwx allows himself (on purpose) accidentally to fall into it and do whatever your heart’s desire.
The marriage proposal doesn’t have to happen, but it’ll be hilarious.
Wen Rouhan: “Wei wuxian, marry me.”
Everyone: what the fuck‽
Wei Wuxian: “no.”
Wen Rouhan: “why?”
Wei Wuxian: “i have hundreds of children, literally the same age as your youngest child, am dirt poor, and practically insane.”
Imagine Jiang Fengmian and all the sect leaders spitting their tea. Lan Wangji immediately thinking that he has competition for Wei Wuxian’s heart and Jiang Cheng being so horrified that he wishes to burn his brain for the images instilled into it.

[More from the ghost!LWJ verse, still dealing with the aftermath of LWJ’s death. See the rest of the posts here.] “There were toys and spare robes,” says Jin Guangyao. “I’ll bring them here, perhaps it will be suitable as a relic, if there’s no luck seeking Wen Yuan’s body. A well-loved toy may have enough energy left over to establish a connection with his spirit.
“There were children’s things at the burial mound?” asks Lan Xichen, looking up at Jin Guangyao. “Why didn’t you tell me? You knew there was a child there!”
“Er-ge…”
“You knew. You could have stopped them.”
This expression is not one that Jin Guangyao ever expected Lan Xichen to turn towards him. It shows betrayal.
I never betrayed you.
(Liar.)
Don’t look at me like that.
(What would he do if he knew it was your fault his brother died?)
No! I didn’t mean for Lan Wangji to interfere! That’s not my fault!
(You betrayed him. He trusted you.)
Jin Guangyao cannot stand the accusation in Lan Xichen’s eyes, not from the only person who’s had unwavering faith in him still. For the first time, he raises his voice at Lan Xichen, cries “Of course, I knew! I knew all of them, not just Wen Yuan! I worked with them for four years, Er-ge! The Wen clan is big, but not that big. I knew all of them.”
Lan Xichen’s expression only sharpens. “And yet you didn’t even try to stop them, A-Yao,” he says.
Them? shouldn’t he be saying us?
“For what? Everyone already thought that my loyalty was suspect! Who would have listened to me? You think my Father would have listened, when he blamed WWX and the Wen for the death of his son and nephew? Was I supposed to tell him, that the Wen did nothing wrong? To tell Da-ge that? If I had defended the Wen remnants, I’d just be ONE MORE BODY left on the burial mounds when you all came for everyone there!” He stresses the you, even knowing how much it would hurt Lan Xichen, even though it twists deep inside Jin Guangyao’s own throat to do it. “If you think there was anything I could have done-”
“MENG YAO, ENOUGH!” says Nie Mingjue’s voice, and Jin Guangyao whirls around to see him walk into the room looking incandescently furious. Jin Guangyao flinches back in terror.
What am I doing? What have I done?
Lan Xichen was the last person who cared at all what happened to him, to strike at that friendship, what was Jin Guangyao doing? (Why did it hurt so much, to see Lan Xichen look at him like that?)
Only, instead of punching him for the words he’d spewed in anger, or worse, drawing his saber, Nie Mingjue just sets his hand firmly on Jin Guangyao’s shoulder. “Calm yourself, Meng Yao,” says Nie Mingjue, and there is something almost like kindness in his voice. “It was not your responsibility to hold the sects accountable.”
What? Jin Guangyao stares at Nie Mingjue incredulously, but the man says, “Xichen is distraught, he did not mean his words.” He looks over Jin Guangyao’s shoulder, expression sharpening. “Apologize, Xichen. That was inappropriate.”
What?
“I’m sorry! A-Yao I’m sorry, you’re right. You couldn’t have done anything, I shouldn’t have implied–”
Jin Guangyao turns back around to see that Lan Xichen has gone white, he’s stepped closer, hand out like he wishes to reach out and hold him, but can’t decide if he’s allowed to step closer or not.
“–I know you always try your best, I didn’t…” and then. Lan Xichen just. Crumples.
Outstretched arm wrapping back around his stomach as he falls to knees with a broken cry.
“Er-ge!” “Xichen!”
“…not your fault. Was mine. I just…”
Jin Guangyao is the first to reach him, kneeling in front of him and supporting him, keeping him from falling further. “Er-ge, please, I’m sorry,”
“No,” says Lan Xichen vehemently. He’s trembling faintly, but there’s a thread of steel in his voice as he speaks, as he says, “Even if, if you’d said. Would I have listened? Wangji told me and yet I only told him to try, I didn’t believe… I don’t know if I would have listened to you, A-Yao.”
“Xichen, you’re not to blame either,” says Nie Mingjue, also kneeling beside them now. His voice is gentler than it had been when he was scolding Lan Xichen just moments before.
“Aren’t I, Da-ge? The deaths of Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli compromised the Jin and Jiang sects, we should have, I should have looked into it, but I just agreed, didn’t check. It’s my fault.”
Something’s wrong, something’s very very wrong, and it takes Jin Guangyao several moments to realize that Lan Xichen is breathing too fast; shallow, gasping breaths as he tries to hold himself together. “Er-ge, slow down, you’re going to hyperventilate!” he says, placing a palm on Lan Xichen’s chest.
“I - I. I stepped. As-side, and. and let. them k-kill, kill my b-b-broth-er. I ki-killed him, A-A-Yao, just for. For do-ing the right. right thing. I–”
“Er-ge please,” Jin Guangyao begs, “Don’t do this to yourself, it’s not your fault, you didn’t know! Please control your breathing, you’re frightening me.” Lan Xichen doesn’t though, although maybe he cannot; his eyes widen more as he seems to choke on his gasped breathing, short, sharp gasps that seem to catch in his throat, and Jin Guangyao has no idea what to do. He’s never seen Lan Xichen fall apart like this before.
“He-he’s go-ne. Not supp. supposed. to. I w-want. him. back. want. M-my fa-fault. Pun-ish me.”
Lan Xichen shows no signs of becoming less hysterical, and before Jin Guangyao can plead further, Nie Mingjue pulls him into his arms, tucking Lan Xichen into a hug, his head nestled beneath Nie Mingjue’s chin.
“Xichen,” he says, “Breathe. You can cry, but you have to breathe,” and somehow that gets through to him, he gasps and splutters some more but he tries, and when he finally starts sobbing into Nie Mingjue’s chest, broken and desperate, at least Jin Guangyao is no longer afraid he’s going to hurt himself.
Nie Mingjue holds Lan Xichen as he shakes apart and cries, and when Jin Guangyao meets his eyes over Lan Xichen’s head, he sees some kind of reflected grief there.
Nie Mingjue mouths, ‘Water.’ Nodding, Jin Guangyao gets up and fetches some, coming back and asking quietly, “Er-ge, would you like some water?” Three hands, from three different people help steady the glass as Lan Xichen sips slowly from it, every one of his hitched breaths still tugging at Jin Guangyao.
Why does it hurt so much?
You were never supposed to be hurt.
It takes some time, but eventually the glass is empty, and Lan Xichen is only crying silent tears into the collar of Nie Mingjue’s robes.
“It’s not your fault alone,” says Nie Mingjue, after the long silence. “I was hasty too. The blame belongs to all of us.”
“I disgust myself,” Lan Xichen whispers, after he lets go.
“It’s fine. They’ll have moved on, perhaps be reincarnated. Isn’t that why-”
“They wouldn’t have. Wen Qing’s ashes were scattered at the Nightless city, and the rest were thrown into a pool of resentful energy at the burial mounds. Their souls would not have escaped,” says Nie Mingjue.
Oh.
It’s at times like this that Jin Guangyao remembers just how cruel cultivators are.
“I’ll find them all, and put them to rest,” says Xichen. “Not just A-Yuan.”
“You’re a sect-leader, Xichen. You can’t just leave everything to do this. Assign it to your cultivators, not-”
“I won’t hurry. But I will give them all rest. I swear.”
“Xichen-”
“Maybe then Wangji’s soul will forgive me, and deign to speak to me,” says Lan Xichen, and Nie Mingjue stops protesting.

The problem with authority is that if you leave it lying around, others will take it. — Yoon Ha Lee, Ninefox Gambit
Qin Su was tired of the constant hovering.
Every time she set foot outside her own rooms, she was beset by disciples and the wives of subordinates, telling her over and over how very sorry they were.
It was all bullshit.
Fake, social climbing schemers, who were more concerned with the fact that Jin Guangshan’s legitimate grandson was once again the sect heir, than sorry for the death of her son. Her A-Song.
They expected her to sob constantly, to wail and tear her hair from her scalp. That they could comfort Qin Su by repeating the same trite, cloying words day-by-day. Earn a little status out of tragedy. If Qin Su had to listen to one more apology, she was going to be sick all other the offending madam’s embroidery hoop.
It was true that she still couldn’t go a day without crumbling into tears. But mostly, she was numb. Exhausted, in more ways than one. She wanted to go to sleep, and wake with her son tucked safely into bed, or not wake up at all.
The private treasury was the only place where she could be certain she would not be disturbed. Even in her own bedroom, it would only be so long before a maid was sent to find her. Only she and her husband could open the hidden entrance to the vault. Only in the treasury, could she be alone, to find something to distract herself, however briefly, from the avalanche of her grief.
There were still many items that had been claimed by her deceased father-in-law after the war that had not been cataloged. Priceless relics and weapons and irreplaceable texts alike sat neglected in trunks. Jin Guangshan had cared only for possession, occasionally touting one item or another out to show off. Ten months after A-Yao’s succession, shelves continued to sit empty. Neither she nor A-Yao had found the time, busy keeping everything running smoothly, as he made bids for projects he called progress with the gleam in his eyes that had first made her chase after him. Back when he seemed flattered by her attention, interested in her as more than a friend or colleague.
Qin Su herself managed the internal minutiae of the Sect and oversaw disciple training. The latter would traditionally fall to the Head Disciple, but they had lost one after another. The woman who had been intended to aid Jin Zixuan had resigned over some disagreement before his death. Her replacement, a second or third cousin to the main Jin Clan, married out to the leader of the Fengyang Hua Sect, a growing sect that bordered Gusu and Lanling. Their replacement died at Nightless City, along with the next dozen or so disciples in line. And so Qin Su was free to manage the training as she wished.
Or had been, until she was asked to take a step back from training, for fear her grief would destabilize her qi. It was true that she had been unable to focus. However, stewing in the unending reminders that she would never hold A-Song in her arms again was no help. Attending to her duties as a hostess only made it worse.
Sorting the looted relics was mindless work, that required none of the focus she had lacked for the forty-one days since A-Song’s death. But it was something to occupy her hands, and some small part of her thoughts.
She began with the books that day, sorting into titles that were common and could be sold, those that needed to be repaired, and those to dangerous to be held anywhere but the treasury. Qin Su moved to start a new pile, for useful, rare texts that should be copied, on a table, and a disorganized pile of notes and notebooks caught her eye.
It was the disorganization that stood out. A-Yao never left anything out like that. He must have been called away, but if he returned and saw it, that would trigger his own flood of tears.  Qin Su had heard him sobbing, late into the night, from the next room over. But each morning, he greeted his work with his habitual dedication, no matter how puffy his eyes, or how little he’d slept. A-Yao would never forgive himself if his work was delayed by his composure crumbling over a small thing out of place.
She picked up the papers, intending only to organize them into an even stack, and place them evenly between the notebooks. But their subject caught her attention.
A circular array was drawn on each paper. Identical, to her unpracticed eyes, with varied notes printed in precise calligraphy in different locations on each page.
Qin Su had always focused on the sword, leaving talismans to those with innovative minds yet weaker cores, like her husband. Yet this array made her look twice.
Sacrifice Summon was written at the top of the first page, the one with the least writing. The soul of the caster is permanently exchanged for that of a chosen spirit or ghost, fully resurrecting the deceased. It was a complex design, meant to drawn in the blood of the caster.
Voices, from the other side of the portal. A-Yao must have wanted to show an item from the vault to a guest. Her heartbeat sped up, her hands shaking as she dropped the papers back onto the table.
The last thing Qin Su wanted was to have to greet her husband’s guests, while he smiled his disappointment in her for shirking her duties.
She raised the tablecloth and ducked beneath, knocking one of the papers off the table as she did so. Catching it, she pulled it to her chest, dropping the cloth back into place just in time. It was dark in the small space, and stuffy. Her heart hammered hard enough Qin Su felt certain it must be audible throughout the room. But her presence was not discovered, and so Qin Su did not have to answer as to why Jin-furen was hiding from her own husband.
“The remainder of the He Clan has been dealt with.” Su Minshan reported. His voice was easily identifiable from the obsequiousness with which he always treated her husband. She’d asked A-Yao what he saw in him once, and he’d flashed his dimples at her and said, unfaltering loyalty is a trait I cannot afford to lose. So Qin Su tolerated Su Minshan, though he made her skin crawl. And made certain never to be caught alone with him. “Xue Yang tracked them down to the last man.”
Why he kept Xue Yang around, on the other hand, was a mystery.
“Good, that’s good,” A-Yao said. Never shy of heaping praise on his subordinates, he would be smiling up at the other man. “Tell me, what did Xue Yang bring back with him?”
“A few urchins, from town. He said they were his payment for leaving the bodies alone.” Su Minshan scoffed, disgusted.
It didn’t sound like Xue Yang had brought the children to become disciples.
There was the slap of a forehead hitting a palm. A-Yao’s voice was slightly muffled as he gave an exasperated sigh. “I told him he could experiment with animals or dead bodies or not at all. Especially not children.” There was the slightest break in his voice at the word children. “Xue Yang has outlived his usefulness. Have him disposed of and left somewhere remote.”
The command was delivered coldly, casually. He sounded nothing like the warm, if more distant than Qin Su had initially expected, husband she knew.
“Yes, Zongzhu.” A pair of disciples said, their footsteps receding as they took their leave.
“Your research is not completed, is it?” Su Minshan asked, once they were gone.
“I have better means now. My dear younger brother is eager to please, and will not dismember the test animals for kicks and giggles.” A-Yao spoke as though this was an ongoing discussion, yet Qin Su, his wife, had never heard a whisper of research on animals before that day. Only of field testing of the Yiling Patriarch’s inventions. “Or decide to run tests on townspeople and dismember them, too.”
Just what had her husband been allowing Xue Yang to do? It seemed impossible that flighty little Mo Xuanyu could achieve it, whatever it was.
“Another headache eliminated, then.” Su Minshan said. “That’s nearly all the most dangerous ones out of the way.”
There was a weighted pause before A-Yao replied, incongruously. “I did love my son, you know.”
“I did not mean to imply otherwise.” Su Minshan rushed to assure him. “I am deeply sorry this step was necessary.”
Step? What was he implying about A-Song?
“If only that woman had told you the truth earlier.” Su Minshan snarled. “Keeping it a secret while her daughter courted her own half-brother? What a selfish bitch.”
What? Qin Su clapped her hands over her mouth, stifling a choked gasp.
“Now, Minshan, please. You remember what my father was like. We were all of us his victims. A-Su, me, and both of our mothers.” For the first time, Qin Su understood what Lianfang-zun’s detractors meant when they said he dripped insincerity. “Ultimately, A-Song’s death can be placed at his feet.”
But A-Song was murdered after Jin Guangshan died, she thought stupidly. Utterly frozen in place, the short, harsh pants of her breath the only sign she had not just been dropped into hell. The two men spoke for a few more minutes, but Qin Su didn’t hear a word.
It was some time after they left that Qin Su moved, her stiff joints causing her to fall onto her side on the edge of the tablecloth.
How was she ever supposed to face the court, knowing what she did now? Look her half-brother in the face without screaming?
The honorable thing would be to expose him, and to then take her own life to restore her own honor.
She couldn’t. She couldn’t do that to her father, to her older siblings. Half-siblings, now, she supposed, with a crazed giggle. The only real siblings, the only real father Qin Su would ever have. It would be better if they never knew what had happened to their mother. To her.
But she couldn’t carry on as she had, either.
The forgotten paper crinkled in her hands. The Sacrifice Summon. Exchanging her life for another’s.
Was that the solution she was searching for? Could she?
Qin Su remembered her husband’s - her brother’s voice saying especially not children. Only breaths before declaring his own son’s death necessary.
Her A-Song was lost forever.
There was, however, another child under Lianfang-zun’s care. Another mother whose son was not lost, but who had nevertheless lost the chance to see him grow. If Qin Su exchanged her life for that woman’s, perhaps her soul would pass on quickly enough to find A-Song in another life.
Jiang Yanli would see Jin Ling grow up safely, ensure Lianfang-zun did not keep the power he had married his own sister and murdered his own son to secure.
That would be best for everyone.
Qin Su shakily extracted herself from beneath the table, returning to the one room she could be certain Lianfang-zun would never enter.
Now she knew why.
Locking the door to her room, Qin Su emptied what little was in her stomach into the chamber pot. When she was through, she began to draw the array.
The first thing Jiang Yanli noticed was the silence. She had been on the battlefield at Nightless City, pushed A-Xian aside, and a sword went through her heart —
She had been dead. She was certain.
Oh, A-Xian. What did you do?
Slowly, Jiang Yanli sat up. She was sprawled on the floor of a well-appointed lady’s bedroom. In Koi Tower, by the color scheme, but its occupant had uncommon taste. Rather than gilded everything, there were accents of gold on the drapery and to emphasize ink paintings of the ocean and a palace she did not recognize.
There was also the matter of the array of blood that surrounded her. Demonic cultivation, which only supported her certainty that A-Xian was involved. But where was he? And if she was in Koi Tower, where was her son?
Yunmeng, something inside her whispered. Though she could not explain why, she knew it was true.
Checking herself for cuts, she found a gash across the palm of her hand. But it was already sealing, far faster than Jiang Yanli had healed from so much as a paper cut before her death.
She wasn’t an expert in raising the dead like her brother, but Jiang Yanli was fairly certain fierce corpses did not work that way. At the very least, she should have been bleeding black. Yet her blood was as red as ever.
Getting to her feet, she started to inspect the room for clues. On the way to the desk, she passed a mirror. Her gaze skipped past a mirror. And snapped back.
It was not Jiang Yanli’s face that looked back.
This woman’s face was rounder and softer than her own. Pretty, with a natural pink in her cheeks where Jiang Yanli’s had always had to be painted on, due to the frequency with which she lost her breath and grew dizzy. There, too, was a hint of the agelessness that came with a fully developed golden core. With a feeling of foreboding, Jiang Yanli felt along her meridians until she reached her core. No longer a weak, underdeveloped thing due to her inability to practice the heavily physical Jiang techniques, it shone bright and strong.
That was a point against this being A-Xian’s doing. He wouldn’t have stolen her a body, when he could simply bring back her own.
Why am I alive? Asked a voice in her head.
That would have been a reasonable question. Only it wasn’t Jiang Yanli thinking it.
Maybe resurrection came with the ability to understand spirits. The results were entirely untested, so it was possible. Yet the voice seemed certain it was alive. If her current state was due to demonic cultivation, she might as well do what A-Xian would: experiment.
“I could ask you the same question.” Jiang Yanli told the voice.
Jiang Yanli? It worked! But why am I in your head?
“Are you the one who brought me back?”  She tilted her head back, trying to place the way the voice made her head feel. Almost like the moment at the start of meditation when she began to forget her body to focus on her spirit, but with a disconnect keeping her grounded.
Yes. And then, I can hear your thoughts, the voice said, you don’t need to speak out loud.
That was disconcerting. Is this your body? She thought at the voice.
Yes. The voice said. Stop calling me that. I’m Qin Su.
Strangely, it was a relief to have a name. It made Qin Su feel more real than anything else in this surreal afterlife. So it would be more accurate to say I’m in your head. Am I possessing you?
It was supposed to be an exchange. My soul for yours.
Well clearly, it hadn’t worked that way.
Responding to her unformed question, the woman continued. The array is on the desk.
This… It was obviously A-Xian’s work, copied out by a more careful hand. But it looked incomplete, a half-developed first draft or his scattered notes on an older text that he could always piece back together perfectly, but left out crucial details for anyone else. Utterly unlike the labeled, if nearly illegible, minutiae on his complete work. Jiang Yanli would never have cast an array with so little information. Especially not one of A-Xian’s.
I didn’t know the Yiling Patriarch. And I wasn’t exactly thinking clearly.
No, she supposed not. Anyone casting this array would have to be desperate.
Everything fell apart and I just… used what I had on hand. There was the impression of a shrug, like her mind contorting itself into a new shape. My impulse decisions always have terrible consequences. That’s how I ended up pregnant and marrying the last person in the world I should have. Qin Su gave a short, harsh burst of hysterical laughter, startling Jiang Yanli into making the same noise aloud.
Telling whoever this abusive asshole was that her husband had died only a week ago, and she was certainly not performing any marital duties could wait until she figured out what Qin Su had done.
There are other pages with more notes in the treasury.
Jiang Yanli sprang to her feet. I’ll need to see them immediately.
She slid open the doors, and came face to face with a maid carrying cleaning supplies. Jiang Yanli quickly shut the doors behind her, so the maid could not catch a glimpse of the blood still staining the floor.
“Oh! Jin-furen.” The maid bowed deeply. “This one apologizes for assuming you would be out.”
It was something of a shock to be addressed by a title that had, from her perspective, belonged to her mother-in-law only yesterday. Jin-furen?
Ah, yes. I’ve been Jin-furen since Jin Guangshan… passed… ten months ago. The word “passed” came with a flash of embarrassment, telling Jiang Yanli enough for her to extrapolate the cause of death.
Jin Guangyao must be Jin-zongzhu then. Strange, he hadn’t seemed the abusive type.
Not abuse. Worse. Qin Su gagged in her mind, making Jiang Yanli do the same.
“Are you all right, Jin-furen?” The maid asked, hovering closer.
At least the gagging gave her an excuse not to allow anyone inside. “I’ll be fine. But please wait to clean until tomorrow. I’m afraid I’m not feeling well. Would you have some soup sent on a tray for my dinner?”
“Of course, Jin-furen.” The maid backed away, bowed, and hurried off.
Jiang Yanli turned to inspect the door, placing her hands on her hips. With Qin Su’s Golden Core, she could likely cast a locking spell. If she knew how, that was. She had always relied on A-Xian’s talismans, many of which he developed specifically for her. Unfortunately, she had none on hand.
That’s easy. Qin Su said. Draw the characters for lock, then modify it with…
It took Jiang Yanli a few tries to draw properly on her new core, but she was able to lock the door against casual entry. No cultivator with a sword would be kept out for long, but they would have to be willing to trespass in Jin-furen’s bedchamber.
The thin flush of victory faded the second she stepped through the treasury portal. Suibian lay on a shelf, visible from the door. A-Xian had not carried his sword for a long time. But he would never have handed it over to the Jin Clan, unless it was directly into Jiang Yanli’s arms. Something had gone terribly wrong.
Qin Su. Why is my A-Xian’s sword in the treasury? Jiang Yanli demanded. The answering silence was deafening. “Qin Su! Tell me why!”
He… died. At Nightless City. Not long after you did. Qin Su’s voice was hesitant, as though confused why she cared.
“No!” She let out a choked sob, clasping a hand over her mouth. A-Xian wasn’t — he couldn’t be —
Didn’t he kill you? I was told —
“No! Never!” A-Xian would never have hurt her. I tried to save him.
Silence, for a moment, other than Jiang Yanli’s own ragged breaths. Then, I’m sorry. I’ve learned a lot of things I believed were lies today. Perhaps what they said about him was too.
They were. A-Xian was bright, and good, and cared too much. He had never been what they thought. Jiang Yanli had not needed to ask to know A-Xuan’s death was a horrible mistake, likely the result of stepping in between his cruel, vindictive cousin and her brother at the wrong moment. If he had meant to kill Jin Zixun, A-Xian had had good reason.
I think anyone who had the misfortune of meeting Jin Zixun considered killing him. Qin Su said wryly.
Jiang Yanli had had those thoughts. She gave a watery giggle that was answered in her head. It was sweet of Qin Su to try to comfort her when she could feel that she was still reeling for her own reasons. The least Jiang Yanli could do in return was get her some answers.
On the table.
She found the stack of diagrams easily, along with a tattered notebook that appeared to contain A-Xian’s original work. Jiang Yanli flipped through that, knowing that unless had both gotten a hold of one of the few people that could read his note-taking scrawl — her, Lan Wangji, and perhaps Wen Qing, who had taken their turns as A-Xian’s sounding board in succession — and convinced them to help details would likely have been missed.
You can read that? Qin Su was incredulous.
Years of practice, she replied. Before Lan Wangji, Jiang Yanli had been the only person who took A-Xian’s inventions seriously, the only person willing to sit and listen while he bounced from idea to idea, eventually solving the problem himself.
The average person would not think it necessary to puzzle out the text under a sketch of Lan Wangji holding a child, assuming it was a caption. When it was, in fact, an absolutely crucial detail. A detail that had made A-Xian conclude the Sacrifice Summon Array should never be used.
There were perhaps a dozen variations on the array. Most worked in a similar way to what Qin Su had intended, summoning a spirit to take the caster’s place. The earliest could not target a specific soul, but A-Xian had worked that out. Luckily, Qin Su had used one of those arrays, allowing Jiang Yanli to be summoned, rather than causing the closest vengeful spirits to battle for her body. The very last caused the caster’s body to be torn apart, and replaced with a copy of the spirit’s own.
But every version had two things in common: a call for revenge, and the destruction of the caster’s soul.
In her mind, Qin Su went perfectly still.
Jiang Yanli had a theory as to why Qin Su’s soul had not been consumed by the array. It had started the job, pulling Jiang Yanli in, but Qin Su had not asked for revenge, and so the array spat most of her back out. What the consequences were, for either of their spirits, she could not begin to guess.
There was a distinctive air of panic to Qin Su’s continued silence.
Qin Su, Jiang Yanli prodded, if this had worked the way it’s written, your soul would have been consumed by it. What could have been worth this?
I didn’t know about that. I didn’t want that.
It didn’t happen. You’re still here. She attempted to reassure Qin Su, wishing there was a way to mentally pat someone on the head. That had always helped calm both her brothers.
I’m still here. Whatever the fuck that means. Qin Su giggled nervously. That wasn’t very ladylike.
I think it’s forgivable, under the circumstances. Jiang Yanli raised a sleeve to cover her smile.
You don’t know the half of it. Qin Su sighed. I didn’t think things like this happened, outside of stories.
Jiang Yanli waited for her to go on, gritting her teeth in response to a wave of bitterness.
Only a few hours ago, I found out my so-called husband is my half-brother and he murdered our son. And now here we are.
Oh. Jiang Yanli could not so much as think of a reassuring response. What the fuck is correct.
“A-Su,” Jin Guangyao said from behind her, before Qin Su could say anything more. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

Fic search
Another post trying to clear our my asks – these are all looking for a specific fic, if anyone knows what any of them are, please do let us know!
 1. It’s about Wei Wuxian ad Lan Wangji travelling back to the Mo Village due to hauntings— the ghost was actually Mo Xuanyu’s mother, who only wanted to help her son via have him exorcise her as a way for MXY to regain honor and respect from the others.
FOUND! Our small steps by tokaku
2. It's one where WWX and WN take A-Yuan with them to qiongqi path. Another detail I remember is that the author gave WWX a new hairstyle and it was the Dead Anime Mom Haircut™️ lol
FOUND! Those who defy by qurbat
3. I've been looking for a fic since forever, it's about the junior quartet and Jingyi gets a tattoo, I think of a flower and decides to show it to a very drunk lwj, and ljy gets chased down by him with bichen, telling wwx he is gonna remove it from his skin or smth like that. It was hilarious and I can't find it, thank you!!
 4. Here's hoping you can help me out please and thanks! It's set post canon I think, in the cloud recesses. There is a visiting sect and a competition where wwx, lwj and the visiting sect leader have some kind of object the disciples have to capture, and near the end lsz and ljl manage to capture wwx and they are like, if we have wwx, we have you too lwj and lwj gives them the object and I think lqr is unhappy. Hope this sounds familiar to someone out there!
FOUND! Not rage but grief by dezemberzarin
5. So I am again searching for a fanfic. I thought I saw it in one of your posts but the closest thing to it (love; it will not betray you by vespertineflora) was sadly not what I was looking for. The premise was pretty similar, but it wasn't set in the omega verse. There was also this one tag saying something along the line of 'WWX takes care of every one else and ignores his own trauma'. If you happened to know what fanfic I am describing I would be immensely grateful!
