The David Wills House in Gettysburg, #Pennsylvania was built in 1816, and purchased by Wills in 1859 as both his home and law office. On November 18, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln finished his speech and spent the night at the home before delivering the Gettysburg Address the next day at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. Jennie Wade is the only civilian death during the Battle of Gettysburg. According to local lore, her two childhood friends Jack Skelly and Wes Culp both grew up to join the war, one on either side. When Jack was captured by Confederates, Wes came to visit him and was asked to give a message to Jennie, as Jack would likely die as a prisoner of war. Jack would die as a POW and Wes would make it back first, but he would die the same day as Jennie at Culp’s Hill, where they all played together as children.
