The Bellefield mansion in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The oldest portion of the house dates to 1795 and was built for Judge John Johnston. In 1885, New York State Senator Thomas Newbold acquired the property. In the early 1900s, the main house was remodeled in the Colonial Revival style, a number of buildings and features were added, and a formal walled garden was designed by landscape gardener Beatrix Farrand. Most of these changes were completed by 1917, and the overall landscape still appears much as it did during that time. The #Bellefield estate is adjacent to and north of the Roosevelt home, Springwood. Bellefield became part of the Home of Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site in 1975 when its owner, Gerald Morgan Jr. (grandson of Thomas Newbold), donated a portion of the Bellefield estate to the @NationalParkService. The park preserves 75 acres of the former Bellefield estate. Scenic Hudson protects an additional 86-acre parcel of the former estate. The mansion currently serves as park headquarters for Home of Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #exploreny #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps103 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #natinalhistoricsite #iloveny #hydepark #hydeparkny #hudsonrivervalley #hudsonrivervalleynha #smallparksaturday #architecture #archi_ologie (at Home of Franklin D. Even though this is a work trip, I couldn’t resist stopping at this park site, which I hadn’t been to! Such a joy to learn about Mrs. Bethune and her dedication to equal education and civil rights. And even though there is no photo to prove this happened, I met Dr. @johnnettabcole , the current (and 7th!) President of the National Council of Negro Women (among other highly distinguished accolades). We had a lovely chat and she was genuinely interested in my photography of national park sites. Such a lovely way to start this trip! #nationalparkgeek #ibrakeforbrownsigns #nps103 #washingtondc #marymcleodbethune #nationalparks (at Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2pd9tqgkcw/?igshid=klmlhzalh87y

It’s been almost exactly four years since we have been to the National Park sites in Hyde Park, #NewYork, so yesterday we revisted the three sites that are located within a few miles of each other. All of the buildings are currently closed, but the grounds are open. The second I am featuring is Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site. #Springwood, as the house is named, was the birthplace, lifelong home, and burial place of the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The original section of the home is believed to have been built about 1800. Roosevelt's father, James, purchased the property in 1866. Over the next 34 years, many improvements and additions were made to the house. In 1915, the final major addition and remodeling of the house took place under the guidance of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and his mother Sara, which gives the home a Colonial Revival appearance. In 1943, Roosevelt donated the estate to the American people and the National Historic Site was established January 15, 1944. The site is also home to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, the first presidential library in the United States, dedicated June 30, 1941. #ny #nyhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explore #exploreny #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps103 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #optoutside #franklinroosevelt #natinalhistoricsite #iloveny #hydepark #hydeparkny #hudsonrivervalley #hudsonrivervalleynha #smallparksaturday (at Home of Franklin D. The soldier's huts at Jockey Hollow, part of @morristownnps, in Harding Township, #NewJersey. George Washington ordered huts, like these replicas, to be built to the standards of 14 feet wide by 16 feet long, with front walls 6.5 feet tall to the eaves. Each hut was home to 12 soldiers. The National Park Service protects natural, cultural, and historical resources like Jockey Hollow so that we can all enjoy them for generations to come. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #jerseycollective #njspots #explorenj #architecture #archi_ologie #morristownnps #soldiershuts #jockeyhollow #morriscountynj #smallparksaturday (at Jockey Hollow) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_6GSixjFpk/?igshid=1uqbweqfq62wk

Today in #history: @joshuatreenps in Riverside County and San Bernardino County, #California was declared a U.S. National Monument #OTD August 10, 1936 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It was redesignated a National Park on October 31, 1994. After boundary expansions in 1950 and 1994, today the park covers 1,238 square miles, slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island and is named for the Joshua trees which are native to the #park. The park encompasses parts of two deserts: the higher Mojave Desert and lower Colorado #Desert. If you are wondering how the Joshua tree was named, according to legend, Mormon pioneers in the mid-nineteenth century considered the limbs of the Joshua trees to resemble the upstretched arms of Joshua leading them to the promised land. Since then, the name has stuck. #ca #cahistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #FindYourPark #travelblog #travelblogger #blog #blogger #explorepa #history #nationalparkservice #goparks #nps #nps103 #nationalparkgeek #explore #nationalpark #optoutside #joshuatree #joshuatreenationalpark #nature #wnpa1938 (at Joshua Tree National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDunlBkjQ88/?igshid=15bt64fezdnk5

The David Wills House in Gettysburg, #Pennsylvania was built in 1816, and purchased by Wills in 1859 as both his home and law office. On November 18, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln finished his speech and spent the night at the home before delivering the Gettysburg Address the next day at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery. At the Blue Mountain Lake area in @delwatergapnps. Before the property was acquired for the failed Tocks Island Dam, a development of about 375 homes was built around the man-made lakes, fed by underground springs. The original plans were ambitious; 10,000 homes would be built and 3,000 acres of virgin land preserved for recreation. The homes, built between 1956 and 1969, were relocated or torn down after the federal government acquired the property. Roads were also laid out and some of them are trails around the lake today. You can also see telephone poles (some standing, some chopped down), remains of stone walls, and clearings where houses were located. Nearby Crater Lake (a natural lake) was also planned as a lake community. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #jerseycollective #njspots #delawarewatergap #OptOutside #FindYourPark #mydwgnra #smallparksaturday #nature #bluemountainlake (at Lower Blue Mountain Lake) https://www.instagram.com/p/CB_9xlojGPQ/?igshid=1c1tnxqspsdzk

An adit at the Pahaquarry Copper Mine at @delwatergapnps on the west side of Kittatinny Mountain in Hardwick Township, #NewJersey. This abandoned copper mine represents some of the oldest copper prospects in the eastern United States. It was mined for brief periods (1750-1760, 1829-1830, 1847-1848, 1861-1862, and 1901-1912) but was never successful. From 1925 to 1972, the area was a camp for the George Washington Council of the Boy Scouts of America. While researching, I found out that the @NationalParkService rangers gave tours of the mine tunnels until 1989, when it was deemed unsafe and the mine entrances were barricaded. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #jerseycollective #njspots #delawarewatergap #explorenj #OptOutside #FindYourPark #mydwgnra #smallparksaturday #newjersey #pahaquarry #coppermine (at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_Taw_LDyIW/?igshid=16nrrfs7awao6

Today in #history: @valleyforgepark near King of Prussia, #Pennsylvania was established. Originally Valley Forge State Park, it was transferred to the @nationalparkservice #OTD, July 4, 1976. Valley Forge was the site of the 1777-1778 winter encampment of the Continental Army. The park commemorates the sacrifices and perseverance of the #RevolutionaryWar generation and honors the ability of citizens to pull together and overcome adversity during extraordinary times. Within the park's 3,500 acres are numerous buildings, including the circa 1773 Isaac Potts House (Washington's headquarters), the National Memorial Arch (completed in 1917), the Reading Railroad's 1911 train station, reconstructed log cabins, and earthworks/redoubts. #pa #pahistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #OptOutside #FindYourPark #smallparksaturday #architecture #archi_ologie #valleyforge #valleyforgenps #RevWar #americanrevolution (at Valley Forge National Historical Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCPZjoMDtrI/?igshid=qj7tb5g71x8i

The "organ of muskets" at Springfield Armory National Historic Site in Springfield, #Massachusetts. Springfield was the primary center for the manufacture of United States military firearms from 1794 until its closing in 1968. The main arsenal building, where the museum is located today, was constructed between 1847 and 1850. This massive brick building served as a storage facility for the weapons manufactured at the armory. The museum houses the world's largest collection of American military firearms, which began as a technical reference library for armory engineers. Other original buildings at the Springfield Armory campus are now home to Springfield Technical Community College. Twenty acres of the 55-acre site remained with the National Park Service for historic preservation. The other building on the @NationalParkService property is Officer's Quarters 1, which was built in 1847 and was home to Armory commanding officers and their families through 1967. Springfield Armory became a unit of the National Park Service on October 26, 1974. #ma #mahistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #goparks #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #exploremassachusetts #architecture #archi_ologie #smallparksaturday #findyourpark #springfield #springfieldma #armory #springfieldarmorynationalhistoricsite #newengland #visitMA (at Springfield Armory National Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_doJxEDGJ5/?igshid=beoig9815fgi

Battery Kingman on the Sandy Hook unit of @gatewaynps in #NewJersey. It was named after Dan Christie Kingman (March 6, 1852 - November 14, 1916) an officer in the United States Army who served as Chief of Engineers from 1913 to 1916. The battery, which held two 12" M1895MI guns mounted on M1917 carriages, was originally built between 1917 and 1921. It was a single story battery with the guns located on open concrete gun pads. The battery was modernized in 1941 when the gun emplacements were casemated and connected to the original magazine structure by concrete corridors. The casemates and magazine complex were covered with sand and soil. Today, the interior of the battery is not open to the public. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #nps #nps103 #goparks #nationalpark #nationalparks #nationalparkservice #americanhistory #nationalparkgeek #travelblog #travelblogger #explore #blog #blogger #explorenj #OptOutside #FindYourPark #architecture #archi_ologie #sandyhook #gatewaynps #militaryhistory #batterykingman #visitnj #abandoned #beautifuldecay (at Gateway National Recreational Area, Sandy Hook) https://www.instagram.com/p/B87tl5WnERy/?igshid=1fzl687h7xcs6
