The former Hyde Park station in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The station was built in 1914 in a combination of the Mission and Spanish Revival styles by Warren and Wetmore, the New York Central Railroad's preferred architects. Because of its close proximity to Franklin Delano Roosevelt's estate, Roosevelt is known to have passed through the station twice during his presidency; in 1939 when he greeted King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom on their 1939 visit, and posthumously in 1945 when his body was unloaded there in preparation for burial. Regular service ended at the station in 1953 and it was no longer listed as a station in 1958. By 1975, the station was abandoned and heavily vandalized. It was one day away from demolition when the Hudson Valley Railroad Society took possession, entering a lease agreement with Hyde Park. #tbt The Gunks - it's been 10 years and every once in a while I find myself thinking of the year we spent living in Hyde Park, N.Y....it seems like a lifetime ago that we were out there. The only thing I miss are the views of the Hudson river and the mountain pass through the gunks. Today in #history: #OTD, June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan challenges Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down” the Berlin Wall, a symbol of the repressive Communist era in a divided Germany. This sculpture, made from a section of the Berlin Wall, is located at the FDR Home & Presidential Library in Hyde Park, #NewYork. The sculpture, entitled "BreakFree" was installed in 1994 and is the work of Winston Churchill’s granddaughter, Edwina Sandys. However, yesterday, Tuesday, December 7, 2020, I visited Harvest Moon Gifts in Hyde Park, NY, and found this gorgeous ornament for my Yule Tree. It has become a bit of a tradition for me to buy at least one new ornament every year, and this one caught my eyes (all six of them) immediately.
