4 YEARS AGO, SPRING.
One of the things Ayato loves about you is how there’s no one he can imagine spending the rest of his life with but you.
You’re not only his lover, but his person. Someone who can understand him, tolerate him, comfort him, love him, see him for who he is without intentions of taking advantage of his family’s name and business.
Despite the differences you both have, you two managed to make things work together as a couple. Despite the fights you both have, you two managed to fix it under communication and clearing up everything. Despite everything, the both of you are still here together.
Because of you, Ayato understands why people love movies so much. Because of you, Ayato understands why people love playing games with friends rather than studying all day and preparing for the future. Because of you, Ayato understands why people love.
Because of you, Ayato understands himself more than before.
So who could blame him for wanting to spend his future with someone who made him happier than anyone can?
Sure, you may be like everyone else, but there’s no one else who could make him feel so in love but you.
Just seeing you sleeping beside him on days when he’d sleep over at your dorm makes him want to wake up beside you everyday. Just seeing you laughing and smiling at his words while walking with him to the university or to the dormitory makes him want to go wherever you go. Just seeing you being embarrassed whenever you can’t find the answer to a homework makes him want to go through all your obstacles in life with you.
Just seeing you looking at him the way he looks at you makes him want to love you again and again.
Just seeing you, he couldn’t imagine his life to turn out like this.
One of the things that Ayato feels burdened with about the Yashiro Company is its past.
It’s long forgotten for how long ago it was, but it will remain haunting to those who are aware of it and will never be at peace with the information they’re burdened with.
Those include his great-grandfather, grandfather, father, perhaps the current CEOs of the two other businesses that are a part of the tri-business, and unfortunately Ayato himself.
He was shocked when his father told him back then that the Yashiro Company was involved with the fall of the Kaedehara Company, a well-known company in the past that was respected by everyone until an incident occurred.
The Shogun Company, now called Tenryou Company, is the biggest business known in Inazuma back then, so when they accused the Kaedehara Company for fraud, everything went down for the Kaedehara family.
The CEO of the Tenryou Company caught Kaedehara Yoshinori, the CEO of Kaedehara Company back then, tampering with important documents red-handed, and despite the protests and excuses, Yoshinori was faced with the court trial and the dire consequences.
Not only did the Kaedehara Company face bankruptcy, they also faced backlash by the media for doing such a thing, leading Yoshinori and the Kaedehara family to go into hiding for good until they’ve been long forgotten many years later.
However, there was one thing everyone didn’t know about.
There were two more businesses that were involved in the incident. One is the Hiiragi Company – who was actually the one behind the fraud but managed to frame Yoshinori for it – and the Yashiro Company – who was the reason why Yoshinori was involved with the scene in the first place.
Ayato’s great grandfather didn’t mean to let this happen. All he wanted was for Yoshinori to obtain the tampered documents while he was distracting the CEO of Shogun Company, only for the CEO to catch Yoshinori at a bad time and ruin the Kaedehara business for good.
As much as Ayato felt saddened from the tragedy of the Kaedehara family, he couldn’t help but resent it so much. After all–
It was the main reason why he ended up marrying the person he doesn’t love.
Ayato found out one night, he went back home from your dormitory to see Hiiragi’s current CEO, Hiiragi Shinsuke, having a quiet conversation with his parents as they failed to notice Ayato hiding nearby listening to it.
In all honesty, Ayato never liked the Hiiragi Company’s CEO. There was always something about him that made the young man feel… uneasy.
At this moment, the uneasiness grew ten times more.
“...Mr. Hiiragi, what’s the meaning of this?” Ayato’s father asks, a frown is evident on his face.
The man across the table smiles in response, as if he didn’t ask the most absurd thing.
“I’m offering you a chance, Mr. Kamisato.” Shinsuke Hiiragi explains. “You can let your son marry my daughter and I’ll destroy all evidences regarding your… grandfather being involved with the infamous Kaedehara incident as well as the evidence that your father’s involved with the car accident that the heir of one of Tenryou Company’s branches, Kujou Kamaji, died in.”
Ayato’s eyes widen, his breath hitches.
“But… Mr. Hiiragi,” Ayato’s father hesitates for a moment, “I would have agreed on this arrangement had it not been the fact that my son is with another. I simply cannot accept that I have to force my son to leave the person he loves–!”
“If you refuse my offer, then I have no choice but to release all the evidence, Mr. Kamisato.” Shinsuke interrupts in a taunting manner. “Would you rather see your ancestors’ entire work into ruins and let your family face backlash from the media, or would you rather let your company continue its successful years without any worries and burdens?”
The young man watches as his parents look at each other in deep thought. It’s obvious they didn’t want to sacrifice their son, but neither did they want to face cruel consequences that their children will face.
However, it’s also obvious which option is the best.
Which is why Ayato walks away from the dining area without listening to another word from the three, his heart heavy and aching on the thought of what happens next.
He couldn’t sleep that night.
He couldn’t stop thinking about every single possible way he could do to prevent this, and all of them led to one thing.
Even if Ayato did find a way to reject Shinsuke without the dire consequences, what if the cruel CEO decided to hurt you to make him say yes to the marriage?
Ayato couldn’t let that happen.
If breaking up with you and marrying someone he doesn’t love is the only way to protect both you and his family from harm, then so be it.
Knowing you, you’d definitely try to find a way to do something about Shinsuke, and Ayato certainly cannot let you do it – not when Shinsuke is perhaps one of the most dangerous person who won’t hesitate to kill you.
There's no doubt that the Hiiragi family was also the one behind the death of Kujou Kamaji.
If there’s one thing that’s strange about the car accident, it was the fact that the cause of it was Kamaji being seen falling unconscious while driving before hitting another car and causing an explosion, leading the Tenryou Company and the police to investigate what made the passing heir to do such a thing, only to find nothing that could help them.
It’s obvious that Shinsuke would be the first person who’d be out for Kamaji’s head given that he’s the one marrying his daughter, something the CEO disapproves due to how Shinsuke isn’t fond of the Kujou family.
However, what most people didn’t know about the infamous accident was how Ayato’s grandfather is the last person Kamaji talked to before his death.
His grandfather was seen by the CCTVs of the Yashiro building talking to Kamaji and led the younger man to run away to his car before the accident occurred, leading the old man to delete the CCTV tapes in fear of people thinking that he was possibly behind the accident. This soon became one of the Kamisato family’s biggest secrets as it was a risk to the business’s reputation.
Knowing this fact, Shinsuke probably got his hands on the tapes and will use it as one of the pieces of evidence that the Kamisato family was involved with the death of Kamaji despite it being far from the truth.
It didn’t matter to Shinsuke it seems, not when the CEO can forge all of the evidence with the help of whoever has the Hiiragi’s family’s back and make it look as if the Kamisato family was behind all of it.
Knowing this, the heir knows Shinsuke won’t hesitate to go after you if he could get away from the two incidents.
Ayato’s heart felt heavy from the thought of what he’s going to do.
Just thinking about not being able to wake up beside you everyday makes him feel hopeless. Just thinking about not being able to be there for you when you cry or be upset over something makes him feel as if he’s separated from you by a wall made of bedrocks. Just thinking about you looking at him as if he’s the worst person to live on Earth makes him feel suffocated.
Just thinking about not being with you is enough for him to feel like he’s nothing.
The only way to keep you safe is by making you avoid him, so he has no choice but to… but to…
“No, I can’t hesitate right now.” He whispered to himself, putting his hands on the sides of his head in frustration. I have to do this for my family… For Ayaka. He thought to himself, closing his eyes shut with a shaky sigh.
Even if he has to make himself become someone you despise with all your heart, even if he has to force himself to lose the future he dreamt of that has you, even when his body feels like it's on fire as his heart weighs as much as the burdens on his shoulders at the thought of not being able to be the person you’ll spend with for the rest of your lives, even when he doesn’t to go back to his bland life before he met you, he knows he has no choice.
As the future heir of the Yashiro Company, he must choose the best choice for everyone.
By the end of the night, Ayato had made up his mind.
In order to make the breakup look sincere to you, he must avoid you for weeks.
He remembers watching romance movies to learn and understand how he can possibly win your heart, but he also learned how he can possibly break your heart.
Now that he thinks about it, this can be a practice for the both of you to live without the other.
He goes back to riding his family’s car towards the university instead of walking with you there, trying to focus on anything that won’t make him regret and run off to where you are (he doesn’t notice the way Ayaka looks at him in concern at the sight of her brother clenching his hands as if he’s holding himself back from something).
He goes back to being holed up in his bedroom studying instead of running off to Komore Cafe to study with you, trying to be busy to stop himself from thinking about you and wonder how you are (he doesn’t notice how his desperate attempts never work. Not until he finds himself staring at the wallpaper of his phone that has you in it).
He goes back to spending time with the Student Council for the rest of the day instead of spending time with you in the university, trying to distance himself from you in order to get used to what the rest of his life will be (he doesn’t notice how Student Council officers, particularly the president and the vice president, wonder what made him look as if he’s been through hell with those now dull eyes of his).
He goes back to being his old self before he met you.
All of this with an excuse of simply “forgetting” about your plans and being too busy to be able to be with you (when he’s always ready to drop everything for you).
The amount of time he had isn’t enough to prepare him for this moment.
By the time he deems it’s time to tell you, you both agreed to meet up with each other in the cafe after not seeing you for the past weeks. It felt like he hadn't seen you for years if he had to be honest.
His mind instantly went numb when he entered the doors of the cafe that his best friend owns, his heart weighing him down from what’s about to happen.
“Ayato! You came!” You spoke up excitedly when you spotted your lover, standing up from your seat and rushing towards him for a hug.
He finds himself spreading his arms wide, knowing that this will be the last time he’ll ever hug you like this.
He closes his eyes shut the moment he feels your arms wrapped around him, shoulders relaxed from your familiar scent and warmth that you have whenever you hug him, clinging into you closer to him as he cherishes the hug.
Ayato had to stop himself from hugging you again the moment you let go of him.
“Come, I already asked Thoma to order the usual. I need your help with a certain topic that I think you might know about.” You explained, holding your lover’s hand as you drag him towards the table you always go to.
He’ll just indulge himself first before letting go.
Just once, and he’ll do it.
He can’t do it.
Why can’t he say it?
Ayato was silent the whole time for the past hour, something he thinks you don’t notice since you’re too distracted by your homework that he helped you with. He couldn’t find the words to end the relationship he loved and devoted himself to for the past years, not when he feels so content from just being here with you.
It was only until you’re almost done answering your last homework when he finally spoke up.
“I cannot do this anymore, ( Name ).” He said suddenly, looking up at you from his drink after staring for a concerning amount of time. “Let’s… break up.”
This is it.
He sees the way you stopped moving your pen from his words, and it felt as though the world had gone quiet from how silent the both of you are.
“...You’re kidding… right?” You asked, looking up from your homework to look at your boyfriend with wide eyes. “Surely.. You’re just doing this to make me pay attention to you, right?” You let out a light chuckle, hoping to the gods above that your assumption is correct.
He couldn’t say it. Not when his mind is flooded with dread, heartache, and misery.
Regardless, it was enough for you to stop chuckling, your nervous smile slowly disappearing from your face. “...You’re not kidding?”
Ayato nodded with an apologetic look on his face, trying to hold himself back from taking everything back and lying that all of this is a prank. “You know me well lo– ( Name ). I apologize for the sudden… proposal.”
No. This isn’t a proposal. This is him breaking off the one thing that made him feel complete and he can’t do anything to stop himself for the sake of his family. You drop your pen slowly. “What… Wait, I don’t understand. What went wrong?”
He lets out a shaky breath, something you mistaken as a soft sigh, and he stares back at your upset eyes. “Nothing went wrong ( Name ). It’s not you.”
It’s me. I’m the one who’s wrong. I need to do this to keep you and everyone safe. He thought to himself.
“Then what is it?” You asked in a hurt tone.
The man pauses for a moment. The next thing he’ll say will forever be engraved in his mind, knowing that it’s the biggest lie he had ever told in his entire life.
He inhales deeply and responds to your question. “Unfortunately I’ve… fallen out of love with you.”
Ayato feels as if his heart went on a flatline from those words, he couldn’t breathe properly as he has the urge to curl up in misery that he had to lose you this way. He just needs to get away from you for good, tell his parents that he has broken up with you, and pray that Shinsuke won’t go after you.
He had never expected for this to end either.
“How long, Ayato–”
“I truly apologize, ( Name ).” Ayato said as he started to pack his items on the table, trying to look as unfazed as possible. “I.. I know this might be too cruel of me to say this but.. I’d like you to stop hanging out with me anymore.” He adds.
You stayed silent, something that made him want to kneel down in front of you and reassure you that everything will turn out okay for you in the end, knowing fully well that this will be a rough time for you and him.
He can’t answer your question. Not when all of this isn’t even true in the first place.
“It was nice knowing you, ( Name ).”
He hopes that this will be the last time he’ll see you, for he isn’t sure if he’ll be able to hold himself back from being in your arms the next time you and him meet again.
As he continues to walk away from the cafe, he sends a text to his driver that he’s ready to go, not noticing how you’re walking towards him until he hears you.
“Ayato, please! Just tell me what went wrong!” You exclaimed loudly as you followed your now ex boyfriend down the streets, ignoring how some people passing by looked at your direction strangely.
“Don’t bother following me, ( Name ).” Ayato spoke, glancing at your direction with a warning look on his face as he continued to walk. For the sake of you, please don’t come after me. He thought.
He stops his tracks when you feel him tugging his clothes, not wanting to drag you and accidentally hurt you from walking with you holding onto him.
“Please Ayato, I deserve to know what made you no longer love me!” You begged in a desperate tone.
He sighs in defeat, his shoulders slumps.
Ayato turns around in your direction, a dull look plastered on his face. “Is it really necessary to have a reason why? I suddenly just don’t. Don’t make this harder for yourself than it is for me.” He lied. He still loves you, there’s nothing that will make him feel otherwise.
“Of course it’s necessary! You can’t just not love me anymore–”
“And yet here we are.”
Words die instantly in your throat and you stare at him in bewilderment, your hand still holds onto his clothing. He wants to punch himself for making you hurt.
“...Do you really not love me anymore?”
He stares at your eyes, thinking of what to say before letting out a breath that he didn’t know he was holding.
“Would you believe me if I said yes?”
Your breath hitches.
Your long silence was enough for Ayato to completely turn around and continue walking towards the bus stop, leaving you standing there dumbfounded and in disbelief. If only you knew how much he wanted to run to you and make it up to you, how desperate he is to find a way to not let the situation end like this,
He couldn’t.
For someone who doesn’t regret his choices, this is perhaps Ayato’s first time regretting a decision.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
.
.
.
By the time he comes home, he looks at his parents with a sad smile on his face.
“Mother, father,” He called them, slowly dropping his bag from his shoulder. “I have.. News for you.”
From the way he looks, his parents immediately became concerned for what he has to say. “...What is it, Ayato?” His father asks. The three didn’t notice how a certain person was somewhere nearby listening to the conversation in curiosity and confusion.
“I know about… Mr. Hiiragi’s offer and the consequences. So I decided to break up with ( Name ).” Ayato explains, unfazed by the sounds of his mother letting out a shocked gasp as his father stares at him in disbelief.
“Ayato you what…?”
“It’s alright. I know this is for the best of our family.” Ayato reassures them, walking towards the hallway nearby. “You may call Mr. Hiiragi about the news and I’ll listen to what he has in mind about the arranged marriage. I’ll be in my room for the rest of the day, I don’t think I have the appetite to ea–”
Suddenly, he felt warm arms wrapped around him.
“Ayato…” Ayato realizes his mother is the one who’s hugging him in such a vulnerable matter. “I’m so sorry you had to go through this.. I wish there’s a way for you to not push ( Name ) away, you deserve to be with them so much and I can’t believe you had to do this for us–!”
“Mother, please.. Don’t cry..” The heir spoke softly, trying not to show his devastation. “I’ll be fine. ( Name ) will be fine too.”
“We.. have to make up a lie that we disapprove of ( Name ) due to the fact that they’re not like us.” Ayato’s father spoke. “It will give those who know about it all the more believable reasons why you’ve broken up with them.”
Hearing that made Ayato’s heart sink even further. “...I understand.”
It took a long while before Ayato is finally allowed to go to his room after a long conversation between him and his parents, who both never fail to remind him that they’re sorry for him to experience this.
As soon as he closed the door shut behind him, Ayato finally broke his facade. The rest of the day was filled with him being devastated at losing the only person he loves, his heart aching nonstop from the heartbreak he endured after breaking things off with you.
“I’m sorry ( Name ), I’m so sorry my love.” He whispered, not noticing how his bedroom door was opened slightly by a certain person he holds dear, whose heart breaks at the sight of her dear brother being miserable for the first time all because of a sacrifice.
That day was the day Ayato died, all that was left was what remained: the heir of Yashiro Company.
And the day after his death was just as painful as yesterday.
Even when he broke your heart and left, you still come up to him to try and ask him why on Earth he broke up with you, only for him to push you away and avoid you despite wanting nothing more than to tell you. It hurts to try and get used to ignoring you instead of letting you come to his arms every time you come up to him.
It’s for the best. He’d rather tell you years later than tell you when you’re in potential danger now.
It’s ironic how he’s experiencing miscommunication when it’s his least favorite thing in romance movies.
By the time you stopped, he could only hope that you understood that some things can’t be out in the open.
Until he finds out that you’re now avoiding everyone.
It’s a habit of his to check a certain street that his car passes by to see you, so when he couldn’t see a sight of you for the next few days, he was confused (and worried). Not to mention how whenever he spots your friend group, you were never there with them at all.
When he discovered that you’ve stopped hanging out with your friends for “projects” from Thoma, he felt even more worried.
Why are you going through your heartbreak alone?
Ayato couldn’t sleep well after finding that out – scratch that, he wasn’t able to sleep well at all ever since he found out about the damn arranged marriage. All he could think about is your well-being and whatever on Earth you’re doing.
He wonders how you’re going through your heartbreak, if you’re not beating yourself up thinking that it’s your fault he left, if you’re blaming yourself for the breakup, and so many more thoughts that just breaks his heart further.
It frustrated him to no end that he can’t do anything about it, not when he has to avoid you in the first place. The only thing he could do at this moment is to just hope you’re not pushing yourself too far.
Sometimes, his mind trails off to what could’ve been if you and him weren’t together.
If he hadn’t fallen in love with you, then you would’ve been happier without any worries besides your assignments instead of suffering from his mistake alone. If he hadn’t fallen in love with you, his life would’ve still been as bland and busy as ever and accept the arranged marriage without regrets. If he hadn’t fallen in love with you, then he wouldn’t have experienced what it’s like to love and to be the so-called mischievous and playful Ayato that you grew to love.
He knew he didn’t deserve someone like you, who’s better off with someone who doesn’t have a secretive family past, someone who doesn’t have the chance of getting forced to an arranged marriage, someone who would never break your heart even if the circumstances are dire.
You’re better off with someone like Thoma.
Ayato doesn’t want to admit it, but he’s quite envious of his best friend. Not only does Thoma know you since you were kids, but he has always been one of the first people you’d go to for advice and comfort should Ayato be unavailable to do that for you. Unlike him, Thoma’s never as busy as he is and, if he dare say, knows your interests more than Ayato does.
Unlike him, Thoma would never give up on your relationship.
Which is why if there’s a possibility that you’ll move on and fall in love with someone else, then he wouldn’t mind if the person is Thoma, who would surely treat you well.
“Kamisato.” One of Ayato’s security guards knocks at his bedroom door, causing the man to wake up from his thoughts.
Ah right, he has things to tend to.
“You may come in.” Ayato spoke up, turning around to see the door opening. “I’d like you to do a favor for me while I’m off tending to my studies.”
“What would you like me to do, sir?”
“You’re aware of the dormitory of my university, yes?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Then… Could you visit there and pick my items in my… friend’s dorm, perhaps?”
Before the security guard could reply, someone else suddenly knocks on the door, causing Ayato to look at his door in confusion.
“Brother,” Ayaka’s voice is heard from the other side of the door, “may I come in?”
His shoulders relaxed knowing that it’s simply his dear sibling. “You may, what brings you here?”
Ayaka shyly opens the door, smiling apologetically. “I uh… I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation and… I’d like to pick your items from your friend’s dorm if that’s alright.”
His eyes widened in surprise. “Are… Are you sure, Ayaka? What made you want to come visit the dormitory?”
“I’m actually planning on visiting there for my friend, Yoimiya. I wouldn’t mind picking the items up for you while I’m at it.” She explains. “Is it alright, brother?”
Ayato thinks about it for a while. Is it really a good choice to let Ayaka come visit your dorm?
As though the younger woman could read his mind, she instantly adds, “If I may be blunt.. I think ( Name ) wouldn’t mind seeing a familiar face by their door. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind seeing me.”
“How did you know it’s ( Name ) you’re going to?”
“...Their dorm is the only dorm you visit, is it not..?”
“...”
Ayato couldn’t help but smile. “Alright, fine, I see no harm in letting you visit ( Name ) for my items. Thank you for offering, Ayaka.”
The woman nods in acknowledgement with a smile before she looks at the security guard and gestures to him to be dismissed, who didn’t hesitate to leave the room seeing how he’s no longer needed.
“I shall leave as well, thank you for letting me do this, brother.”
.
.
.
By the time Ayaka comes home, it’s already dinner, and Ayato instantly notices the relieved look on Ayaka’s face.
He couldn’t help but be curious if something good had happened between his sister and ex lover.
“...How are they…?” Ayato asks.
The woman stays silent for a moment, looking down at the box that contains Ayato’s items and gifts he gifted for you in deep thought.
She then smiles gently. “They’re better than before to be honest.”
Those words were enough to make him feel relaxed.
“That’s good.. Let me pick that up for you, I’ll take it to my room while you go to the dining room and eat.”
Ayaka nods in response, lending her sibling the box. “I will wait for you there then.”
As Ayato starts walking towards his room, he looks down at the box to see the items that were once in your dormitory that he loves to visit.
Ah, so many memories. It’s as if the man is going down the memory lane.
He could recall every single joyful moments the items – especially the gifts he gotten for you – brought, like the time when he won a game booth during a school event and got you the prize you wanted, the time when you both made bracelets to match one another, the time when he made an exceptional origami that he gifted to you, the time when you both celebrated your one-year relationship anniversary in Komore’s Cafe, and surprisingly, the time when you both confessed your feelings to one another.
Unfortunately, just like how he deals with the memories he has with you, he has no idea what to do with his items. He couldn’t throw it all away, nor can he just simply ignore it.
Perhaps.. It wouldn’t hurt to display these in his room, where he’s the only one who would stare at it as he remembers the value it holds in his closed heart alone until the day comes when time finally follows his memories and precious things.
Just thinking about the memories made Ayato realize that even when he has a future spouse to marry, he will never be able to experience the things in a way he did with you, and will never feel whole again.
It didn’t take long before Ayato eventually met his future spouse.
Shinsuke was more than ecstatic when he heard news that Ayato’s now single and accepted his offer of the arranged marriage, causing the CEO to instantly come to visit the Kamisato Estate a few days later to discuss certain things about his daughter, Hiiragi Chisato.
The first thing Ayato needs to do is to win his daughter’s heart, then when Chisato wishes so, the CEO will start the wedding arrangements immediately, all the while Ayato wonders what the woman he’s going to marry is like.
Ayato imagined Chisato to be some cruel and vicious woman who probably saw him in those parties and suggested the marriage to her father, and he felt even more miserable from just thinking about the fact that he’d possibly marry a terrible person and have Shinsuke, a potential murderer and a cruel man overall, as his father-in-law.
But his thoughts instantly changed when he saw her by the balcony.
Shinsuke emphasized the fact that Ayato must attend the upcoming party that both Hiiragi family and Kamisato family would be attending, wanting the man to come up to his daughter and get to know one another, so the blue-haired man had no choice but to attend the party despite being someone who prefers to not be in public’s eye.
Hiiragi Chisato was a lonely soul, if he had to put it. She didn’t look like someone who’d plan evil doings nor someone who’d be the daughter of some cruel man. She just looks like a woman who longs for something in her life.
He knows not to judge a book by its cover, but sometimes, a cover has to be interesting enough to make a person be curious and look at what's inside.
So he finds himself heading over to her, already knowing what to say in his head.
“And what brings such a lovely lady such as you being so lonely for an exquisite party, if I may ask?” Ayato spoke smoothly, watching as the woman looked at him in surprise.
Chisato couldn’t bring herself to look him in the eyes, her words stumbling. “I-I uhm.. I just feel a bit overwhelmed from so many people attending here. I thought it would be best if I took a breath of fresh air.” She explains, her fingers fidgeting.
A fake small chuckle comes out from his mouth, though his shoulders slightly untenses from how nice the woman seems to be.  “That I can understand. Not to mention how I have to make some small talk with half of the attendees, which bore me a lot.” He comments, leaning against the railway and looks at the view in front of the two lonely souls. “Your name is Hiiragi Chisato, correct?”
She lets out a small squeak. “You… You know my name?”
“I know everyone’s names at the party.” He spoke. “My name is Kamisato Ayato, I am delighted to make an acquaintance, Miss Hiiragi.”
“O-Oh you don’t have to.. Call me that!” She said immediately. “You can just call me Chisato, Mr. Kamisato.”
Ayato pauses for a moment from her words, taken back from how she’s so casual around him.
A small smile appears on his face. “If that’s the case, then you may call me Ayato, Chisato.”
That night, the both of them talked about a few things about themselves, be it what they do in their free time, their favorite food, favorite events that are held every year, and so on and so forth. If it weren’t for the marriage, the blue-haired man would’ve been happy that he made friends with someone who’ll surely be willing to be a good help to the Yashiro business in the future.
Eventually, the two of them started talking about the arranged marriage.
When Ayato brought it up when the opportunity arose, he was surprised to see how the look on Chisato’s face was anything but excitement.
If their genuine conversation earlier wasn’t enough to convince Ayato that she didn’t want this marriage either, then it’s the way she looks right now that does the trick.
“...I’m not sure what to feel about this marriage,” Chisato spoke honestly with an apologetic smile. “I was.. surprised when my father brought up that he’ll set me up with you, especially when I’m still moving on from my lover’s.. death.”
Ah, so she doesn’t know that he had broken up with his lover.
The man tries to prevent himself from asking Chisato if she could change her father’s mind about the marriage, knowing that it will only be a helpless move given that the woman would have definitely asked from the start.
“My condolences, may he rest in peace.” Ayato said with a sad frown. “If it makes you feel better, the marriage is a shock for me as well, and I’m not sure how this will go for us.”
The woman feels relieved from hearing those words. “I’m glad we’re on the same page then.”
It took a minute before Chisato spoke up again. “Even though we don’t have feelings for each other, I’d like to put in some effort in this marriage at least. We will be spending time together for the rest of our lives as soon as we graduate, after all.”
Ayato feels his heart sink, now remembering that fact.
“...I understand. I shall try to do the… same.” was the only thing he could muster, knowing that he’s still not ready to even accept this cruel fate of his.
That was the last time he saw the woman, and there’s no guarantee that the Hiiragi won’t be at the next party that the Kamisato family will also be attending.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
As days grew by, Ayato felt more restless to the point where he didn't want to go home early and study. All he wants to do is something that could make him forget. Forget about the ridiculous marriage, forget about the heartbreak, and forget about you.
Although he looks like he hasn’t been through hell at all on the outside, the inside is like an ocean during a stormy night. Only time could tell how long it’ll take before he snaps.
Even when he hasn’t seen you for weeks, you’re still haunting him. Even when he closes his eyes and sleeps, you’re still there in his dreams – the one where he wants to be forever because it’s the only place where he has you in his arms with no worries.
Out of hopes of keeping his thoughts at bay, Ayato volunteers to stay on campus after classes to help with some more Student Council activities.
Thanks to this, it was the reason why he saw you again.
He was on his way out of the university an hour after he finished his extended activities when he noticed your familiar figure nearby. Seeing how you didn’t notice him, he decided to try and go to another direction to hide himself away from you, only for you to notice him and be surprised.
Thankfully, he instantly looked away when your eyes landed on him, causing him to act like he didn’t notice you and went in another direction to go away from you.
His heart sank when he heard you letting out a sob as soon as he was out of your view.
Just hearing such a sound would’ve made him run up to you and comfort you to the end of time, but now that he has no right to do such then there’s nothing he can do than to be out of your way and out of your life.
The next day after the incident, Ayato quickly backed out from his extended stay in the campus for the Student Council much to his comrades’ confusion.
He decides to go back to being occupied with both of his duties as the heir and studying hard. Although it doesn’t exactly help shoving his thoughts away, it’s better than bothering you.
Sooner or later, the reminder of his marriage eventually comes.
It started when Ayato encountered Chisato once more at the university, specifically the place where all the buildings connect to one another, and the man dreaded the thought that people will start being curious about their relationship and spread rumors about it, which could lead to you hearing them all and be even more heartbroken.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
When Chisato said she’d put effort in the marriage, Ayato didn’t think she meant she’s going to start now when they haven’t even been officially engaged yet.
Not a week even passed when the young man received letters from the woman. Each note was nothing but wishes that his day would go well, something that made him couldn’t help but scoff.
His day will never go well when he has just left the only love of his life.
Just when Ayato thought the letters were the only thing he’ll get from Chisato, the woman had also started to occasionally give him foods that she accidentally cooked too much, something that made his smile even more strained around her.
There’s no food that could make him feel happier than the ones you make for him.
Eventually, Chisato squeezed into his dull life no matter how much he didn’t want to.
She became his partner in events that both of their families are invited to, not noticing how much he wanted to tell that he’s not dating her to people who went into conclusion that they’re both dating.
She then became his new studymate and visits his estate every now and then, not noticing how he prefers to do things alone ever since the breakup.
She became a part of his friend group, not noticing how his friends are hiding something that she doesn’t know about Ayato.
Not to mention how she’s also the person he walks with towards the university, not noticing how he sometimes stares at a certain street and locations that reminded him all too well of someone who’s special to him.
At this point, Chisato truly became a part of Ayato’s life.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
But, if he had to be honest, he appreciates Chisato’s efforts. He always reassures himself that at least the woman isn’t so cruel than he thought she would be. He feels bad that he couldn’t tell her about you, not when he knows she’ll try to convince her father once again and possibly make Shinsuke believe that Ayato put her up to it—
“Ayato? Are you alright?” His thoughts were instantly cut off by the sound of his best friend’s voice calling him, causing the blue-haired man to wake up from reality and look at Thoma in confusion.
The blonde-haired man frowns at the sight of his friend spacing out. “Is something… wrong?”
Ayato hesitates for a moment before a stiff smile slowly forms on his face.
“Everything’s alright. Thank you for your concern, Thoma.”
If anything, Ayato is glad that no one batted an eye at the fact that he and Chisato started hanging out with one another, thinking that they’re both close friends thanks to their families. So that has to mean something, right?
Apparently not. Not when he could feel the intense glares of two certain women who are considered one of your best friends ever since he entered the cafeteria with Chisato.
Now that he thinks about it… How would things turn out when he and Chisato started dating?
He found that one out very quickly.
It was during another typical visit from Shinsuke when he told Ayato the one thing he dreaded to hear.
“I heard from my dearest daughter of mine that there will be an upcoming school festival for your university by the end of spring.” Shinsuke said, stirring the cup of tea that one of the servants provided. “It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced one in my school… How long was that?”
Ayato couldn’t help but have a bad feeling down his stomach. Usually, Shinsuke is a man who goes straight to the point, so seeing him talking about… things that he should be talking with an old friend about, is getting on his nerves.
“If you’d like to experience it again, the festival is open to everyone outside the school as long as they know a student there.”
Shinsuke smiles. “That’s good, but a CEO like me is too busy to do such indulgence. I’m quite afraid that my dearest daughter will be alone throughout the festival…”
Ah there it is.
“If you could, Kamisato Ayato, would you accompany Chisato the whole time and perhaps make it official?”
Ayato’s strained smile almost falters.
The silence fell upon the room. All that was heard are hushed footsteps from those who reside in the estate as well as noises from the beautiful yard that’s just outside of the lounge both Ayato and Shinsuke are in.
It took a few seconds for Ayato to finally speak up. “...I’d be delighted, Mr. Hiiragi.”
“Thank you, Kamisato.” The elder man then stands up. “I shall take my leave knowing that my daughter will be in good hands for such an occasion. I will come back soon to discuss certain matters with you regarding your relationship, specifically how long the both of you will keep your relationship a secret.”
Ayato stands up as well. “Very well, Mr. Hiiragi. Would you like me to accompany you to the exit..?”
Shinsuke shrugs him off with a laugh. “Oh don’t worry about me, thank you for your kind hospitality, Mr. Kamisato.”
Just after the CEO slides the door open, he stops for a moment. “Or should I call you son-in-law now? I can imagine you and my daughter getting married already, haha!”
The younger man tries not to clench his fists.
“...I’m fine with any… Mr. Hiiragi.”
Just to get this over with, Ayato decides to ask Chisato out on the day before the festival in Komore Cafe.
In a way, it’s like he’s reliving the time when he asked you out on a date in Komore Cafe. Though, that didn’t make things better for him – if anything, he feels like this is so… wrong. He doesn’t want to see Chisato as a replacement of you nor does he want to replace the memories he cherished with the ones that have Chisato in it.
Chisato was, at the very least, delighted and enthusiastic when Ayato asked her out, giving the man a sign that she now has feelings for him much to his dismay.
What can he do about it? Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
He could feel Thoma’s eyes on his back, causing him to feel even more guilty that he’s doing it here.
If only Thoma could understand once he finds out.
DAY 1 - START OF FESTIVAL
.
.
.
DAY 5 - END OF FESTIVAL
The festival was all but a blur.
The whole time, Chisato was taking Ayato all over the festival, wanting to try a lot of things to which he had to oblige. Although he wasn’t looking forward to this occasion, it didn’t mean Ayato wasn’t enjoying the festival. Fortunately, Chisato is a pleasant company to be with, and he knows he has to make efforts in this marriage as it is fair to the woman who also didn’t want it.
However… If he had to be honest, the only thing that made the festival a bit better is the fact that he hasn’t seen you for the past week, and he wonders whether or not you’re having fun now that you’re back to spending time with your friends (an information that he found out from Thoma himself).
He finds out that question when he hears a familiar laugh that he hasn’t heard for so long.
While Chisato was busy talking to one of her friends who found her, Ayato instantly turns around to look for the source of the voice. Just once, he wants to see you again to see if you’re alright than before.
To his relief, you are having fun.
You’re a few steps away from where he is, it’s enough for you to not realize that he’s in the same area as you, laughing along with Ei and Miko, who are enjoying the festival just as you are.
Ayato smiles genuinely at the sight, relieved that you look better than the last time he saw you.
It’s at that moment when Ayato realizes that even when he’s suffering from Shinsuke taking advantage of him, he knows that you’re somewhere out there safe and now happy, then that’s enough for him to go on with his dull life that he didn’t wish to come back to.
4 YEARS LATER, SPRING .
As Thoma left Ayato’s office after their agreement about inviting you to the wedding, Ayato couldn’t help but feel nervous.
Surely if he’s careful enough, then Shinsuke won’t find out about you being his ex and will simply think you’re just an old friend of Ayato’s in college just like his other friends. He just needs to make sure that he’s alone with you when he tells you the truth, but won’t risk telling you about Shinsuke given that you’d probably be anxious for the rest of your life.
Suddenly he remembers something.
Ah right… Tomorrow’s the day.
He supposes it won’t hurt to come visit tomorrow, it’s the least he can do as a member of the Kamisato family.
.
.
.
After Ayato places the flowers on top of Kamaji’s grave, he starts to pay respect as the Kujou family stands idly by in silence. Although the supposedly heir isn’t considered as a close friend of Ayato’s, Kamaji is still a friend who didn’t deserve such cruel fate.
It’s truly unfortunate that this day was the day when he lost two of his friends.
As soon as Ayato says his condolences and farewell to the Kujou family, he heads towards two certain graves that’s quite a bit far away from where Kamaji’s is.
Another thing that the public doesn’t know about Kamaji’s car accident was the people who were in the scene.
There were three deaths who were involved from the accident. The first was of course Kamaji, but no one knew who the two other people that died from the accident besides the Kamisato family once again.
The two innocent people who were hit by Kamaji were associated with the Kamisato family, Tomo and the last member of the Kaedehara family, Kaedehara Kazuha.
Kazuha was a dear friend of the Kamisato siblings who died too soon.
They weren’t close as far as Ayato was aware of, but that didn’t mean his death made the heir’s grief go away so easily. Kazuha was kind, and a close friend of Ayaka’s due to how they’re batchmates in their school.
So when the two Kamisato siblings heard from their father that the two unknown innocent people who died was one of the people they’re friends with, they were distraught.
He sometimes wonders if Kazuha would’ve been great friends with you.
MONTHS LATER, AUTUMN.
The day after the joint bachelor party, Ayato received a surprise visit from a familiar guest of his in his hotel suite.
“...( Name ).” He spoke in disbelief, watching as your face fell at the sight of your ex.
“...Ka…Kamisato..” You replied. “I apologize, am I.. bothering you and Chisato right now?”
Ayato blinks a few times before he immediately shakes his head. “No, don’t worry. Unfortunately, Chisato is not here at the moment since she’s currently going out with her friends right now.”
“Oh…” You spoke softly, looking away from his gaze. You honestly hoped you’d see Chisato, that way you’d get along with her more and become friends. “...I uh.. I just came to visit because I forgot to give you two a wedding gift.”
Ayato looks down at the box you’re holding and he manages to read the brand. Ah, champagne flutes..?
You then add, “And… I want to talk to you about what you told me before.”
The blue-haired man’s eyes lit up, opening the door wide for you to come in. “Of course, please come in.”
The both of you stayed silent as you entered their hotel suite, unsure what to say to one another.
“You can put the gift there on the table and sit down by the sofa. I can fetch us some drinks since I’m sure it must be exhausting for you to come all this way here.” Ayato spoke up, heading towards the kitchen without letting you protest that he didn’t have to do it.
By the time he comes back, he places a glass of water in front of you before sitting somewhere nearby. He would be lying if he said he’s not nervous about this situation.
You slowly took a sip of the drink, avoiding eye contact with Ayato.
It’s only a matter of time before the both of you have to talk about it.
Ayato decides to be the first one to speak about it. “I… I really do apologize for everything, ( Name ).”
You sighed. “...I know. I think you and I are thinking the same thing, we want to get this settled with, don’t we?”
“Correct.” He responds.
You nodded slowly. “I do wish you told me this before when you had the chance. I would’ve understood more as to why you did it and maybe this wouldn’t have been so painful for me.” You put the glass down on the table, still refusing to keep eye contact with him. “However, I suppose you have your own reasons for why you didn’t tell me.”
Ayato nodded sadly. “I did.”
You took a deep breath, staying silent for a couple of minutes. “I’ve thought about it at night ever since you told me.” You confessed. “I didn’t know what to feel. Should I be mad? Upset? Sad? Distraught? I didn’t even know if I wanted to pity you or not.”
You then look at where Ayato is. “I still can’t forgive you for what you’ve done to me of course, and.. Honestly almost three days isn’t enough for me to process this whole thing you and I have — and I doubt I’d be able to make up my mind by the end of the trip — so I think it’s best for you and I to go our separate ways for now.”
The blue-haired man nods slowly, smiling sadly. “I understand. I know it’s too much for me to ask if we could be friends again after so long so I’ll respect your wishes.”
You look at him with a grateful look. “Thank you, Kamisato.”
“Anything for you, ( Last Name ).”
You then decided to take your leave. “It was nice talking to you. Congratulations on your wedding again.”
Ayato slowly follows you as you head towards the exit of his suite, wanting to escort you out. “It’s no problem, ( Last Name ). Thank you for the gift as well.”
“Goodbye, Kamisato.”
“Goodbye, ( Last Name ).”
And just like that, the door closes shut behind you as you start to walk away from the room.
Ayato lets out the breath he didn’t know he was holding as soon as you’re gone, and for the first time, he feels as if a weight on his shoulder has disappeared.
Although he isn't considered your friend, he knows it's enough for him knowing that the both of you have settled the one thing that's eating you both alive.
When he decides to return to the living area and picks up your glass, he couldn’t help but notice the gift-card you wrote on top of the gift you gave him.
“Congrats on your wedding, Mr. Kamisato and Ms. Hiiragi!
– Sincerely, ( Name ) ( Last Name ) and Diluc Ragnvindr”
The last two words made Ayato raise an eyebrow in confusion at the sight of another name besides yours.
Since when did someone like Diluc Ragnvindr himself be allowed to share a gift with someone he doesn’t know well?
Unless…?
“No.. He doesn’t see them like that.” He mumbled to himself, walking away from the box to wash the glass as he tried to push his thoughts away.
He could only hope you don’t see Diluc that way either, if you found out about his true self, then only Celestia can tell how you would react.

DAN’S NOTES !
To simply put, Kazuha was long dead before meeting you. His death as well as him being a part of your life as a mysterious friend whose motive is to push you to move on are honestly one of the plans I’m going for before I begin to write the prologue of evermore.
The reason why he’s with you and wants to help you is because he knows how much Ayato is so fond of you based on countless times when the blue-haired man talked to Kazuha about you as well as how Kazuha feels like he owes Ayato a lot. So the least he can do is to be there for you when you’re alone.
Of course, by the time you start to no longer be alone, Kazuha starts to fade away, and he knows that as soon as you come back to your friends once again, he can finally go to the afterlife knowing that you’ll be okay.
also a summary of what ayato means by diluc’s true self.

alhaitham x reader. wc: 540. fluff. pt 3. of '—the scribe, in love.' pt. 2.
Tumblr media
alhaitham always, always knows when something decides to worm its way into your mind. he can practically see it wiggle around, the gears in your skull turning and the cogs moving as you chew on your fingernail. the air around you almost buzzes with the energy of the idea bouncing in your head.
he watches you carefully throughout the day, one eye on his work and another on you. you keep stealing what he's sure you think are covert glances, and he bites back the urge to make a remark. instead, he decides to wait.
when you approach him in the evening, two books tucked to your chest, he knows he'll find out soon enough.
the countdown begins when you bring his head to your lap while he reads. with every page you flip above his head, he mentally marks another number.
three. two. one.
“alhaitham?”
there it is. he hums in response, eyes never parting from the words in his page.
“how do you feel about nicknames?”
now that, he did not expect. as he chooses his next words carefully, he carefully studies the glint in your eyes. idly, he wonders why you asked.
"i have no opinions about them," he says, after a few moments of silence.
"so," you stretch out the 'o' sound, "can i call you my darling?"
"unexpected." he blinks. "but i don't see why not," odd, but a harmless request.
"can i call you sweetheart too, then?"
"call me whatever you like," he sits up, deciding to get a drink of water. he only just takes a sip when you pipe up next.
"what about calling you my snookums?"
he chokes.  you and your timing. "does that word even exist in the dictionary?" he asks, attempting to nonchalantly distract you.
goodness knows that if he let even a single moment of weakness show, you'd pick up on it and use the nickname on him for eternity. and if kaveh got wind of it?
the architect would haunt him with it for months.
you sigh, and that's when he knows you're nowhere near done. but you say nothing, so he assumes you're satisfied for the time being.
hours later, night blankets sumeru city, inky sky enveloping all. you've been suspiciously silent about your earlier topic of conversation.
it is not until the two of you are comfortably settled in bed, your head resting on his outstretched arm as you face his chest, that he sees the gears turn once again. your eyes are soft, and your hand gently strokes his cheek.
"can i call you hai-hai?" you ask, voice not louder than a breath next to his ear.
color starts to dance on his cheeks, and he averts his eyes. he opens his mouth in protest, but words die in his throat.
who would've thought the acting grand sage, one who knows so, so many words, in so many languages, would be rendered speechless by a nickname, and such a silly one at that?
you do not wait for a response. a smile slowly spreads across your face and the hand on your face squishes, then pokes his cheek.
"hai-hai it is, then." you press a kiss to his nose. "goodnight, hai-hai."
you'd be the death of him.

pt. one | pt. two
Tumblr media
“If you needed help, you could’ve just put your pride aside.”
Alhaitham sat beside you, tissues and Tylenol in one hand, books in the other. There were no emotions on his face as he took out two pills for you and grabbed a water bottle from his bag.
The week of studying for mid-terms would've been amazing, even easy for you if it weren't for the horrible sickness you had gotten after a night out for drinks. That would explain the dizziness and headaches when you ran into Alhaitham. It has been halfway through midterm study week, and every day Alhaitham and you had scheduled time in the library... together.
Honestly, it wouldn't have bothered you as much if it weren't for the wet dream you had of him burned into your eyelids every time you so much as glanced at him.
In the library, sick as hell, you couldn’t help but notice his muscles. His arms flexed ever so slightly as he was caring for you. Even though his eyebrows were scrunched up, his eyes were still the same glowing soft teal. His abs prominent under his shir-
“Are you here to study or oogle at me until you die from a fever?”
Your face flushes, avoiding your gaze from him. There's no excuse for how you were borderline drooling over the man. Usually, you weren't this bold, but as of late (maybe due to the fever) you've been more and more bold. Especially with your little dream you had...
Your neck heats up even more at the thought of it. Quickly you take the pills and water out of his hand, instantly chugging the water and downing the pills.
"Let's, uh, just focus." You mumble, already opening a page of one of your many textbooks to study over. Alhaitham smirks at your response, observing the way your face heats up. Or maybe it was the fever…
"Do you think you could even focus with how hot you're burning up?" He leans forward, hands raising towards your forehead. Feeling his rough hands against your skin made you heat up even more, burning sensations going to your cheeks. You look into his teal eyes, almost a glow in them as he stares back, his hand still caressing your forehead.
Your heart picks up its pace, something about him hypnotizing, almost like it's drawing you closer. Maybe you didn't like him before at all, until now.
Cause he had never made your heart go so fast as it is now.
Alhaitham breathed out, "Yeah you're hot."
There's no way you could be any hotter, thighs pressing against each other. Maybe for some sort of friction or comfort. But one thing you did know was that you needed to end this before you got too carried away.
Alhaitham for some reason didn't mind being so close, nor touchy as of recently, almost like something within him changed, like he actually wanted to be around you. Or dare you even say, touch you.
But part of you just thought you were thinking these things because of your little fascination with him, nothing more. Just delusion. Even though deep down you knew you craved some sort of attention from him.
The library had this warm tone throughout it, barely anyone was there as it was already late noon. The both of you are seated in a secluded corner surrounded by the beauty that books hold. Books and papers are displayed everywhere, just the two of you together. It was almost intimate in a way.
You sigh out quickly and avert your eyes. "Alhaitham..." mumbling off, you turn your head to the side, trying to focus on a piece of paper and the racing pace your heart was going. "We should uhm, get back to this."
Alhaitham chuckled a little, the sound addicting. 'Gods, everything about the man is too much.'
He complies with your wishes, much to your dismay, and adjusts himself in his chair. Hours go by as silence ensues between the both of you, trying not to feel his burning gaze every so often. Every time he so much as glanced at you, you clenched your thighs or adjusted your position.
After the 7th time, you finally snap. "Why did you want to study together?"
Alhaitham's eyes quickly dart to yours, tilting his head a little as he leans on his hand. "If someone wants respectable work done, they choose someone competent. So that's what I did." Simplicity is his specialty by far.
You narrow your eyes a little, fidgeting with the hem of your shirt. "Mhm, because you definitely go out of your way to help a sick person as long as they're as competent as you." You laugh a little and roll your eyes, referencing how he brought water, medicine, and tissues for you ever since he found out you had gotten sick.
He's not convincing, it's almost like he tries to be more condescending when he's lying. You look up at him, a blank expression written on his pale complexion. You slightly wonder what's going on in his mind, what he thinks when he looks at you with nothing.
Meanwhile, Alhaitham was trying to come up with an excuse, his mind scrambling. This was all new to him, the feelings, the words, the out-of-character reactions. He didn't know what to do, but he did know that he still wanted to be around you. It was all so out of place to the silver-haired man.
And for one of the rare times for the smart-ass man, he admitted defeat.
"Touche."
Tumblr media
Mid-terms had passed by without a hitch for the most part. Nothing out of place, nothing out of the ordinary. Things were going back to normal, Alhaitham had been busy with his little self-made projects, and you had been busy trying to make sure everything was in place for the next term. Both of you passed with the highest scores in each class, of course, and both of you moved on.
Winter break coming up afterward, it was nice to be halfway through the year already, getting closer to the degree and career. After mid-terms, it was like anything that took place between Alhaitham and you and never happened. Sure, you thought about him from time to time. Like when you went to the library, or to that one bar, the park. Just little places that in all honesty reminded you of him.
But you had to remind yourself that there was nothing to begin with, that Alhaitham was never one for romance, and he wouldn't start for you. At least that's what you thought.
And maybe that's why you had accepted a date from one of your fellow classmates over break, to branch off from Alhaitham.
Or at least try to.
A local cafe, small secluded, and cozy. Good for a one-on-one conversation and date. No distractions, nothing too uptight or expensive. Perfect, the ideal date scenery and scenario.
So why weren't you having fun?
Both of you sat across from one another, already ordering off of the menu, he had obviously wanted to start a conversation. But to your dismay, it was just idle conversation about the weather or how you looked.
Don't get yourself wrong, he was an attractive guy, dark hair with dark eyes, and chiseled features. Even his bright aura, and how smiley he was, were inviting, nonetheless. He was, and is, very attractive in your eyes yet, there was nothing.
You had tried to smile, at least wanting to give the guy a shot after all. But every time he'd drone on and on about some sport or activity, Alhaitham's eyes would come to your mind; his lips, slight smirks, even his aloof nature.
"H-hey are you there?" his voice suddenly spoke up, clearly trying to get your attention in some way. His eyebrows pinched, slightly leaning in closer to you. 'Shit I spaced out again.' You advert your eyes and look at your cup, laughing a little to blow it off.
"Yeah, I'm sorry I didn't get much rest last night." You say, trying to sound as convincing as possible, giving a half smile. He smiles back and shakes his head, still leaning towards you.
"It's okay, I totally understand. If you need anything just let me know..." Again, he smiles. And maybe he's just a smiley person, or maybe he wants something from you. "Well, do you want to talk a walk while we chat? It's getting a little stuffy in here." he proposed, already getting up to throw away any trash at the table. You look a little surprised and stand up, getting your coat and adjusting your skirt. "Okay..." you trail off as you both head out the door, his arm coming up and around your shoulder as you walk.
Uncomfortable. That's what you feel as you feel his arm around your shoulders. He was attractive, nice, friendly, and even caring. So why did you feel so uncomfortable? Everything should feel perfect, with the two of you walking down the street, him talking your ears off, arm around you. Maybe you just needed to get used to it, maybe you just needed to be around him some more and then the butterflies will come, and your heart will race.
At least that's what you told yourself.
Maybe he could sense something wrong as he suddenly stopped walking, retracting his arm from you.
It was silent, you turned his way a bit and waited; waited for irritation or questions to start spewing from the man's lips. But instead of words, he just got closer. Backing up, your back hits the side of a building. Your breathing quickens. You weren't scared, per se, but on edge.
"I don't know how you feel about me... Throughout our whole date, you seemed like you weren't 100 percent there, and that's okay. Whatever is on your mind I... I want to know. And be there for you." He gets closer, dark eyes looking down at yours. In front of you, he puts one arm on the building wall beside your head. Your heart quickens, 'What the fuck is going on.'
You clench your fists just in case anything happens. His face gets closer to yours, almost like he was trying to go in for a kiss. "But I... I just wanted you to know that I like you. A lot... And I want you to give me a chance." His face gets even closer, going in for a kiss. Your eyes start darting around, almost like you're panicking.
There aren't a lot of people on this street, looking around as you scan for an exit. It was almost like he planned this, making sure there weren't a whole lot of people around to see or interfere.
'This isn't what I want, this was never what I wanted.' You quickly press your hand against his chest, stopping his advancements.
"Listen you're- you're a good guy." You start to say as you try to calm your voice. "And you're very sweet, and kind and caring-"
"And that's why I think I'm good for you!" He exclaims, smiling and picking up your hands in his. 'This isn't going well.' You start shaking your head and chuckling a little, trying to come off as nonchalant. "No, I-I don't know. I'm just so busy with studies and my career that-"
Suddenly his expression changes to one of anger, "Then why did you accept my date in the first place?" You scramble to explain yourself, to try to not come off as rude as you are. The dark-haired man suddenly sighs deeply and pinches the bridge of his nose. "I should've listened to people when it came to you." You quirk your eyebrows at the man's statement, lips in a thin line of discontent. "Excuse me?"
He grabs your hands again and squeezes them a bit forcefully, coming even closer to your body as he breathes angrily. "I've heard so much shit about you. And I chose over and over again to deny every single one of those accusations. That you play with people's feelings, only and ever study your fucking life away. That you're a whore for that stupid mathematics major dude. Oh, Alhaitham was his name, the prick who doesn't even want you."
His words are laced with venom as he presses you into the wall even more, slightly getting more aggressive the more he talks. "And here I am!" he raises his voice, hands still grabbing your wrists tightly.
"Get the fuck off me, dude!" You yell, anger flashing in your eyes as you try to get your hands free from his grasp. He leans in more towards your ear, starting to whisper. "Here I fucking am trying to be the one person you need. The one person that actually might want your bratty ass."
Rage burns in your eyes as you knee him in the crotch, automatically having him crouching on the ground groaning. You scoff and make sure you have your pepper spray in hand. “Honestly if anyone knew you were such a fucking dickhead pervert I don’t think anyone would’ve gone out with you.” You start walking off, trying to find a bus station or something so you can go back home.
But then suddenly someone yanked you back into an alleyway, instantly covering your mouth. Panicking you immediately try to struggle against the person. Hands covering your mouth as your back is against the person's front, there’s no way for you to really see them. Your heart starts beating fast, hearing it inside your head. ‘Fuck, and I gonna fucking die?’
“Shh shh, hey it’s fine.” A deep voice says, clearly trying to soothe you. “It’s just me sweetheart, no need to worry.” You look at the person's arm, seeing the black gloves, and feeling a cold ring against your lips. Something clicks inside your mind. 'Alhaitham.'
Making sure that the man left, clearly trying to find you, Alhaitham eases up a bit. Wanting to wait a bit before removing his hand, wanting to make sure that you were safe. Alhaitham closes his eyes tightly at this realization, silently cursing himself for being such a fucking idiot.
A weight lifted off your chest, heartbeat already starting to slow. Seeing you calm down almost instantly, he slowly took his hand off your mouth and turned you around to face him. His eyes dart around your face for anything out of place. Caring. You look up at him, a sense of safety coming over you as you hug him. You didn't know what came over you, but honestly, you just needed a hug - this whole day had been stressful and scary as a whole. Shock comes across Alhaitham's face as you hug him, feeling your arms wrapped around him securely making him heat up. Until suddenly you push him.
"What the fuck was that earlier?" You suddenly ask, clearly angry with how he borderline manhandled you... (Not that you were really complaining.)
Alhaitham rolls his eyes at your transgression and sighs crossing his arms. "Not even a thank you for saving your ass. Typical."
Alhaitham wasn’t one for petty remarks. In fact, if anyone else had said something like that he’d just walk away. Not a care in the world. But maybe he had a soft spot just for you. How sweet.
You narrow your eyes and huff, "I didn't need your help. I'm very well capable on my own." You pulled my skirt down a little as it got frilled up and started to walk off. Until he yanked you, once again. You give him an annoyed look as his hand is still around your wrist. Looking up at him, you can tell the tips of his ears are red as he looks down at where you adjusted your skirt.
You scoff again and roll your eyes, "Pervert." His eyes snap to yours as Alhaitham turns beet red. "Listen, okay? I understand you're more than capable of taking care of yourself. It's just..." Alhaitham hesitates slightly, covering his mouth with his hand. "I was... Observing you." Your eyes widen, 'Oh so a pervert and now a stalker.'
He quickly takes your hand, "Not in a creepy way, I... I was just in the cafe when I saw the two of you." Alhaitham tries to look into your eyes, almost asking you to believe him. To not associate him with the man you went on a date with. He sighs out closing his eyes as his face gets closer to yours. "I got curious and followed you. I know that sounds creepy, but I was just trying to make sure you were alright."
"And why do you care?" Your heart starts racing again, not in fear. Nerves? Yeah, just nervous.
"I... I, unfortunately, don't know." Alhaitham chuckles a little, he never really expected himself, out of anyone, not to know something especially when it came to himself. Out of the ordinary.
In return, you chuckle a bit, "The Alhaitham doesn't know something?" You tsk and bring your hand to his cheek, eye contact very prevalent. "Never thought I'd see the day."
Maybe it was how close the two of you were.
Alhaitham suddenly leans in, glancing at your lips as if asking for permission. Your breath hitches as you gravitate towards his lips.
Maybe it was how scared you had been earlier on your stupid date.
Alhaitham breathes out shakily, swallowing. "Tell me to stop."
Or maybe it was the fact that you still had feelings for the silver-haired man.
Still cupping his face, you shook your head lightly, "Don't."
Or how hard his heart was beating.
Still in the alleyway, Alhaitham closed the gap between you two, one hand on your neck and the other on your waist. Pressing his lips against yours, he groans wanting more.
Maybe it was that Alhaitham was slowly falling in love with you, and that's why he decided to destroy it all.

Tumblr media
You haven’t seen Zhongli much after the incident in the dining room a few days ago. Even if you bump into him, you doubt he would notice you.
“Madam Y/N?” A maid knocked on the door, and you told her to come in. She bowed as she entered. “Breakfast is ready.”
You nodded, thanking her before following her to the dining room, and to your surprise, Zhongli was there drinking tea.
But he didn’t acknowledge you.
It only took moments before he got up and went to his office, much to your disappointment.
He was so confusing.
Tumblr media
Lately, you’ve been feeling tired even though you were only always lonely and bored in the mansion, and you’ve been feeling nauseous.
If you were pregnant, you were scared about what Zhongli’s reaction would be. He’ll be glad you finally gave him an heir...
But what about you?
You cursed your family for requiring you to be in an arranged marriage. Because now you were in love with a man who won’t love you back.
“Madam, you called for me?” Arya, one of your trusted maids, showed up in front of your room in no time.
“Yes. Can you keep this a secret, please?” When she nodded, you continued. “Buy me a few pregnancy tests.” She was surprised for a moment but nodded in understanding nonetheless.
“Of course, Madam.” She bowed when you thanked her before walking away, and you sighed as you closed the door.
“And if I am pregnant,” You whispered, looking down at your stomach, “What would I name you?” You scoffed, “Or would Rex Lapis name you instead?”
After Arya bought you pregnancy tests, you went to the bathroom to test them and waited for the results, and you were right.
You were pregnant.
You were elated, finally having a child, but you weren’t happy with your marriage.
Sighing, you walked by the window and noticed a letter sitting there. It was unsettling because there wasn’t any sign of who it was from. Slowly, you opened the letter, and you gasped.
‘Now, you shall perish.’ Written in blood.
“Don’t move.”
Your breath hitched when you sensed someone behind you, “W-Who… How—”
“Don’t speak. Just come with me.”
The person covered your mouth with a cloth, and you lost consciousness.
Tumblr media
“What’s up with you these days?”
Xiao’s voice interrupted Zhongli’s thoughts. “…Hm?”
“You’ve been acting… weird.” He crossed his arms. “Is there something wrong?”
“I’d rather not talk about it. It’s not that big of a deal.”
The Yaksha was worried, but he just shrugged it off. “All right. Also, there are still no reports about your superior’s death. We’ve been investigating it for so long…Tch.”
Zhongli sighed, “We just need to try our hardest.”
A few moments later, Ganyu came bursting through the door. “Mr. Zhongli! Madam Y/N is missing! And she has received a suspicious letter… There isn’t any sign of who it’s from!”
“What?” Ganyu gave him the letter, and when he opened it, his eyes widened.
Immediately, he ordered Xiao, Ganyu, and the Millelith — “Find my wife. Now.”
Tumblr media
“I told you to kill her, not bring her here…! Have you fucking lost your mind?!”
“I-I’m sorry… I couldn’t bring myself to!”
You slowly gained consciousness. It took a few seconds to realize your hands were tied up as you lay on the ground of an empty warehouse.
“You’re finally awake.” You recognized that voice, Raiden Shogun!
You looked up at her, glaring. “Zhongli will fucking kill you. He’ll come to find me.” You didn’t know why you said that. It slipped out of your mouth.
But you knew he wouldn’t come to find you.
“Oh? When he does come to find you, he’ll also see the woman he actually loves.”
Your eyebrows furrowed. “W-what?” As if on cue, a woman came up behind Raiden.
Lady Guizhong. Zhongli’s former wife, she’s alive?
She gave you a pitiful look, and you looked back at Raiden, a disturbing smile forming on her face. “She’s not dead. She killed Morax’s superior for her beloved husband to be the leader.”
Oh my God.
You were overwhelmed. It was slowly making sense. Raiden Shogun had probably planned this for so long — Lady Guizhong had killed Zhongli’s superior for Zhongli to be the leader, and Raiden Shogun somehow found out who the killer of his superior was, then used her in her plan.
But what would happen to Lady Guizhong now?
“Didn’t I tell you to count your days, Y/N? I’m gonna get rid of you.” Raiden Shogun pointed her gun at you, and you closed your eyes, your heart pounding so loud that you could almost hear it.
‘I’m sorry, my future child.’
You waited for the gunshot, but then Raiden hummed. “Or what if… Guizhong just kills you instead? Wouldn’t that be so fucked up?” She let out a laugh.
You opened your eyes immediately, and Lady Guizhong shook her head. “N-No please, I can’t—”
“I’m ordering you. Kill your former husband’s current wife.”
Guizhong sobbed as Raiden pushed her gun into her hands, and she looked at you. “I’m sorry.”
Suddenly, you heard gunshots outside the empty warehouse.
“How?!” Raiden Shogun angrily exclaimed, and Guizhong took the opportunity to remove the rope tied up around your wrists as soon as the Millelith crashed into the place, shooting Raiden’s soldiers.
“I left the letter you received in your room on purpose so there was evidence you were kidnapped, and I hoped they could come and save you.” Guizhong flashed a sad smile, “I’m sorry once again.”
“Raiden Shogun. I knew you were suspicious ever since you visited Liyue.”
Zhongli… He came.
He ran towards you but slowly stopped once he saw Guizhong.
“You… You’re alive…?”
Guizhong shook her head, “I’m sorry. Please. Save Y/N and forget about me.” He stared at her in shock.
“Ah, my plan is all ruined!” Raiden Shogun spoke up, holding a tachi in her hand. “Guizhong killed your superior for you to become the new leader, Morax. She deserves to perish, doesn’t she?”
Slash!
And just like that, Guizhong was dead. Zhongli’s breath hitched.
Tears formed in your eyes as you grabbed the gun Guizhong was holding and pointed it at Raiden Shogun. You shot her in the shoulder as she cried out in pain. “You…!”
Zhongli immediately grabbed your hand and pulled you towards the door to escape, but you felt Raiden’s sword slashing your back, making you groan and fall. He looked back furiously to shoot her, but she managed to flee the warehouse.
“Go! I’ll take care of this!” Xiao yelled out as he shot Raiden’s soldiers. Zhongli picked you up, starting to panic when he saw you losing consciousness as he ran out of the warehouse. Ganyu then showed up and helped Zhongli carry you.
“Y/N... Live. Please.”
That was the last thing you heard from him before you passed out.
Tumblr media
You opened your eyes slowly, attempting to get up, but it hurt like hell. “Ow!”
“Finally.” You heard someone say, then saw Zhongli giving you a small smile. “Don’t try to get up yet. You’re still not well.”
You slowly sat up and looked away from him, making him frown.
Didn’t he tell you to fuck off because you aren’t his real wife? Why is he here?
“Um…” You started, “How did you know where I was?”
“You received a threat, right? Then you went missing. I immediately ordered Xiao to do everything he can to find you. The first person who came to mind is Raiden Shogun, who’s been suspicious ever since she visited Liyue. I was right.” He sighed, “And I was scared… You’d be dead as soon as we got there. I’m glad you weren’t.”
You huffed, “Why would you be scared?”
“Because… I love you.” You looked at him, surprised at his sudden confession. “After Guizhong ‘died’, I was scared of falling in love again. That’s why I said those foolish things and started avoiding you because I realized I was falling in love with you. I’m sorry for that.” Zhongli held your hand, “But trust me, I do love you.”
“Really?”
“Yes.” He said, “Fuck the contract. I’m willing to break the contract for you. Only you.”
You swallowed a lump in your throat. “How do I know you’re not lying?”
“I’ll prove it to you. I’ll do anything. Please.” Zhongli — Rex Lapis got on his knees, looking up at you as his hands clasped yours tightly. “I beg of you, believe me when I say I love you.”
Take the risk or lose the chance.
Because even after all the unfortunate events, you still loved him.
You sobbed, pulling him up to his feet and hugging him. “I believe you.”
“We still have a long way to go,” He kissed your forehead, and you saw tears in his eyes as he looked down at your stomach. “We’ll take care of this little one, too.”
“You knew?”
He intertwined his hand with yours. “I saw the test before we came to find you. Thankfully after the incident, our baby is fine. You’re so strong.”
You smiled, and it quickly faltered when you remembered the previous events. “What happened to Raiden Shogun?”
His face suddenly turned serious. “She managed to escape after attacking you, which is unfortunate. Fear not, I made sure you’re completely protected and no one is taking you away from me now. I won’t allow it.”
You laughed. “Noted.”

Denial is Futile: Wanderer x f!reader - Chapter 6
Read on AO3 | Series Masterlist | Taglist
« Chapter 1 | < Chapter 5
Summary:
What would you do if you were stuck with Wanderer indefinitely?
The cute and sweet guy from the bazaar was brought to your place while unconscious. But when he woke up, you were appalled by the amount of snark he had. Was he even the same person? And now you were stuck with him because he could literally die if he stopped holding your hand. You weren't sure if you could tolerate him any longer. Little did you know he was exactly the type of person you needed in your life.
Other info: Fluff, humor, sfw, enemies to lovers, some hurt/comfort and angst later, character growth, occurs after the version 3.3 Archon quest and Tighnari's story quest, female reader
Words: 3.2k
*****
Your arm didn't sting anymore. The pain medication finally kicked in. Despite your experience with fire, this was the first time you'd gotten burned.
You sat on the bench, now settled in Pardis Dhyai, and Tighnari inspected and redressed your wounds.
"You should be fine now," he said, kneeling in front of you, placing the rest of the bandages back into his satchel. "It shouldn't take long to heal as long as you keep it clean and reapply the salve I gave you earlier."
Wanderer slumped on the bench, elbow on knee and chin on hand. You took your arm back from Tighnari and gave him a brief thank you.
The sky was dim as the sun set behind you and the nocturnal insects had begun their hums. "You should probably rest for now," Tighnari told you. "I'll see if I can reschedule our meeting for–"
"Tighnari, you said you'd come hours ago.” A slender lady walked up behind him, placing her hands on her hips. She had pale turquoise hair and her white dress was decorated with isometric diamonds that were different hues of blue and green. You knew exactly who it was. It was Madam Faruzan.
Wanderer raised a brow and a slight scowl spread on his face. He didn't bother trying to hide his annoyance at her interruption. You squeezed his hand tight as a warning to be polite, but he merely snapped a look at you as if you were asking for something unreasonable.
"I could've been preparing for tomorrow's lecture," Faruzan told Tighnari. "Don't tell me you’ve completely forgotten."
The sky was getting dark, and you were tired from the long day. The battle with the Fatui dragged over today's schedule, and your legs were sore, not to mention the added difficulty of an injured arm.
“You're not the only one with places to go, you know,” said Wanderer with a click of his tongue, standing up in front of you. "Can't you see we're busy right now and that she needs some rest?"
You bit your lip and pulled him back onto the bench. Why must he be this rude to one of the esteemed professors from the Akademiya?
"First of all," Faruzan said to Wanderer, crossing her arms, "I was talking to Tighnari here. You should mind your manners, young man."
Wanderer merely snorted.
“Just what is so funny?” Faruzan reprimanded.
You wanted to disappear into the bench. Maybe she wouldn't notice you were here.
“It's just amusing how you thought I was younger than you,” he replied. "Last I checked, I'm actually older than everyone here – combined."
Faruzan took a step back. "What? H-how is that even possible?" she asked. “Then why do you look so young?”
“Are you really asking yourself that?” Wanderer said, rolling his eyes. “You of all people? Just what exactly do they teach at the Akademiya for everyone to be so stupid?”
In your panic, you jabbed him hard with your elbow, to the point where he forced out a cough. You couldn't risk a drop in your reputation that came from being associated with him.
“Madam Faruzan," Collei tapped her shoulder. "Please allow me to explain.”
You gave a sigh in relief, thankful she was here.
“Your meeting is actually with these two,” Collei continued, giving her a bashful smile. “I told Tighnari to wait for them here because Y/n got injured earlier. They saved us from some Fatui we ran into."
"Oh dear." Faruzan turned her attention to you, now noticing the bandaged arm under your sleeve. She knelt down to get a closer look but was careful not to touch it. "I apologize for my rudeness earlier,” she said after ensuring you were fine. “I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions like that."
“Hmph. I'm surprised you even apologized,” Wanderer commented. You threw him another look.
“Well then,” Tighnari said, clapping his hands together. “Since that's all settled, Faruzan, Wanderer is the one who reacted to the speckled posies the other day.” Tighnari must have spoken to her about your dilemma.
“It was these two?” Faruzan said now connecting the dots. “So that's what this meeting was about. Why did you need to be so secretive about it?” she said with hands on her hips. “And here I thought they were a pair of researchers who just happened to be a couple.”
“What?” asked Wanderer.
“Oh… Umm…” you said, not sure how to respond to her. You really didn't want her to think you'd like someone like him. “Why would you say that?”
“Well, based on how concerned Hat Guy was just now…” she began, glancing at you two. You couldn't help but wonder why she had a skeptical look on her face. Was there something you missed?
“Well… that doesn't matter right now.” Faruzan brushed off the topic. “You wanted me to help you investigate why Wanderer goes unconscious, did you not?”
“That's right,” said Tighnari after clearing his throat. “Wanderer's symptoms were the same as Kartaka’s.” He briefly explained the current complications with Kartaka and discussed how it'd be best to keep his existence discreet. You had no idea this was why he never mentioned this to you earlier.
According to Tighnari, with Faruzan's knowledge of mechanical life forms from the past, he hoped she'd have an idea for why Wanderer had the same reaction as Kartaka did. He had called himself a puppet before but maybe there were some similarities with this ancient technology.
“To be honest,” said Faruzan, “I'm not sure if I'll be much help.”
“I have some other ideas I can experiment,” Tighnari replied. “I'll just need you to observe and see if anything looks familiar to you.”
What Tighnari brought was much more elaborate than you had expected. He pulled out various vials from his satchel as well as other fabrics and materials for testing. You didn't understand what exactly he was experimenting as he discussed his finding with Faruzan, but you simply followed his instructions, hoping they'd come to a conclusion.
A few of the tests required Wanderer to go unconscious again. It had been a while since you'd seen him laying on the ground like that, and you held your breath every time he didn't wake up immediately. You knew you needed to find a permanent solution, but it was difficult to see him in that state considering all the time you had spent together.
“I'm sorry to say that all these tests were… inconclusive,” said Tighnari.
Faruzan sighed before stretching her arms with a yawn. “You know, why don't you just look for a replacement part?” she suggested. “From the looks of it, I think our findings confirmed your original hypothesis. It's as if one of his organs is malfunctioning.”
“But even after all of these tests, we don't even know which part of me is malfunctioning,” said Wanderer. “How would I–?” he stopped himself and sighed, rubbing his palm on his forehead. “We're back where we started.”
You were all circling back to the same conclusion you had with Nahida and Baizhu, the conclusion you desperately wanted to avoid. You bit your bottom lip, reaching for a different answer, one that didn't include the Electro Archon. “There isn't anyone else we could ask for help?” you asked.
“There's always the Doctor,” said Wanderer with a snort. “He had previously figured out some of my inner workings.”
Your eyes grew wide with hope. “Why didn't you bring him up earlier?” you asked. “This could've been fixed by now.”
“Ah. I see,” Tighnari said with a hand on his chin. “I didn't know you were acquainted with him as well.”
“You know him, Master Tighnari?” asked Collei, her voice a little shaky.
“Let's just say I've met him briefly before,” he said while crossing his arms. “He wanted to take Haypasia.”
Collei gasped, hands covering her mouth. Her arms and legs froze and she bit her lip.
“This was a long time ago,” he said. “You know yourself that she's perfectly fine.”
Collei's shoulders remained stiff, and you knew you must have been missing some vital information. “So… is this Doctor not an option then?” you asked.
“No!” shouted Collei, realizing she said that a bit too loudly. “No,” she said again after adjusting her tone. “He might just…” she began to say, but her eyes wavered and grew dark, their usual light was gone. She didn't finish her sentence.
“He'd perform all kinds of experiments on us,” Wanderer finally explained with a sigh. “To say he'll have no regard for our well-being is putting it lightly.”
Collei's eyes grew wide at him. “Did he… ” she rubbed her arm, almost as if to soothe an invisible wound. “You too?” she asked.
“Well, in a different life, yes,” he said with a shrug. “But there's no use in discussing this anyway. He and the rest of the Fatui don't remember a single thing about me.”
So it was the Fatui. Despite learning some of Wanderer's past, you knew very little about his time with them. He mentioned it here and there with very little context, so you could hardly piece together a picture of his life there. Now you received another part of the puzzle; he was a victim too.
You had learned of the Fatui by chance, unfortunately because of Collei's trauma. A Fatui diplomat was in the city while the two of you carried some food from the tavern on the way home. Her trembling hands ruined the cake for Kamran’s birthday, but you were fortunately able to piece it back together. That was when Collei explained her past to you when you got home.
So seeing that Wanderer had a similar past, you had a glimpse of why he wished for revenge. For the first time, you felt like you understood him.
And that was why you'd never go back home.
Faruzan left for the night as the rest of you made your way back to Gandharva Ville. Collei had her bed back and you slept on the floor again but this time with Wanderer next to you. After staring up at the ceiling, you turned on your side to face him and inched a little closer to him.
“What do you think you're doing?” he asked.
You sighed, lying on your back once again. Collei was already fast asleep.
“Nothing. I'm doing absolutely nothing.”
*****
Wanderer clicked his tongue as you dragged him to the House of Dana for the third time this week. The meeting with Faruzan only concluded with what the two of you didn't want to hear: the next logical move was to see that woman.
You had been sleeping in more. It wouldn't have been a cause of concern if you were merely going to bed later than usual. But there were instances where you had trouble getting out of bed, almost lethargic at times. You would quickly regain your energy after eating breakfast, but Tighnari had instructed to keep an eye on your condition.
But you? You were ignoring it.
You continued with the work for your internship, not even addressing the issue of him being stuck to you anymore. He didn't care much either since he was forced to tolerate you and your habits the longer you were together. You would even compromise to his wants when he used to have to force his way instead. It was like you simply accepted that you'd never find a solution to being attached to him.
Until you had fainted.
Wanderer had caught you once again and this time it had taken you two days before you had woken up. And he had to remain by your side as Collei nursed you back to health.
“At this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if you just decided to drop me at the ravine over there,” he joked.
It was the obvious solution to your deteriorating health. Just let go of the one who was draining the energy out of you.
“No,” you said. Your answer was firm.
So now here you were in the House of Dana in the dead of night, flipping through any book you could find in hopes of finding a way to keep you both alive. The topics varied widely: mechanical core applications, Archon energy manipulation, ways to access Irminsul, vishap creation myths… the list went on.
“I have no clue how to even pronounce half of these words,” you said, groaning into your hands. You sat on the cold tile floor, leaning your back against his. A book laid on your lap from the ancient alchemy section and neither of you were an expert in the area. “I should just ask some of the scholars in the other departments.”
“And how exactly do you plan on bribing them to do the work for you?” Wanderer chided.
“We could at least ask,” you replied. “There's no harm in trying.”
Wanderer closed his own book. Learning about the history of runes wasn't going anywhere. “Let's go to Inazuma.”
You didn't reply. This was exactly how he thought you were going to react. You had shut down all conversations related to Inazuma, even more so lately, and you tended to avoid whatever you didn't like.
So you didn't talk to him. You continued to look through your stack of books and it slowly dwindled as the hours went by. You let out a yawn and the next thing he knew you had audaciously cuddled against him and wrapped your arms around his elbow.
“What do you think you're–”
“The war in Inazuma created a food shortage,” you told him.
Wanderer raised a brow. That was an abrupt change of topic. And because he was a being who didn't understand hunger, he couldn't empathize.
“What's this got to do with anything?” he asked.
You went quiet again. The library was empty, now nearing dusk, and its high ceiling gave a feeling of hollowness. Your voice had a slight tremble in its timber, but you carried on as if it was nothing of importance.
“My brother was a fisherman,” you said with a smile, but he could feel the rise and fall off your breath against his shoulder. “He didn't worship Orobashi like the rest of the island. He was loyal to the Electro Archon and I never understood why.”
“Why are you even telling me this?” Wanderer asked. “Did you think I'd care?”
You shoved his shoulder. “Can't you just listen?”
“Why would I bother listening to another person's sob story?”
“Ugh. Forget it,” you said, pinching the bridge of your nose. “Why did I even try?”
You picked up another book and Wanderer returned to his. He didn't understand why you thought he could give you any comfort. He didn't remember much from Watatsumi either. His dealings were limited to the delusion factory and nothing was particularly relevant to him from that island besides the Resistance.
He flipped a page but his attention was elsewhere. After a few more pages and a sigh, he finally asked, “Did you go hungry too?”
“What?”
“Forget it,” he said. “If you don't want to answer the question, I'm not going to force you.”
“Seriously? You shut me down just to ask again?”
“You know, I don't even get why you want to tell me.”
“I brought it up because I thought you'd want to know why I don't want to go to Inazuma,” you said, slamming your book shut. “And I thought maybe, just maybe, you could understand because of what happened to you with the Fatui. I could understand why you'd want to avoid them too.”
“Ha. You think I'm scared of them?” he said.
“That's not what I said–”
“I simply just have no reason to associate with them. If anything, I'd rather not go back to Inazuma either.”
You were about to throw back a remark at him, but instead you stopped and you sighed and you rubbed the temples of your forehead. You muttered to yourself something about calming down and you fiddled with the spine of your book.
A moment or two later, you tried talking to him again. “Did you have bad memories in Inazuma too?” you asked.
He sighed and shifted his legs to a more comfortable position. “Why do you even bother asking?” he said, rolling his eyes. “Everything was fine and dandy every single time I was there.”
Despite his sarcasm, you didn't add anything else. You went silent as if you didn't want to touch the topic anymore. He wouldn't care either way. It was over and done with and he was glad you didn't try to comfort him. But was that really what he wanted? Just another person who let him be, and not interfere with the status quo?
He shook his head. No. It was better this way. You wouldn't want to see him when his feathers were ruffled the wrong way. Or worse, like that wild dog that bit Niwa while it was in pain. He was an idiot for nursing it back to health. Wanderer let out a sigh, remembering when his wife scolded him for getting hurt.
You eventually fell asleep on the library floor, giving up on your struggle to keep your eyes open. The amount of effort you'd put into this was absurd. Did you really want to avoid Inazuma at all costs?
You tugged on his arm as you stirred on the floor and he couldn't believe how troublesome you were. With a scoff, he lifted your arm up and muttered to himself about how fortunate you were that Nahida's home was close by. You'd better not slap him when you wake up.
Wanderer attempted to prop you up on his back, but something got caught in one of the books. It was the bandages from your arm and it began to unravel. Wanderer scrambled to reach for it, only for the whole thing to fall apart anyway. He awkwardly froze with no clue how to proceed. If he bent down to pick it up, you'd wake up. Wait. Why did he care anyway?
But before he could fully change his mind, your arm caught his eye. It had mostly healed and when he lifted your sleeve to take a look at it, he saw a scar that he never noticed when he tended your wounds. It was distinct from the burn you got from protecting him. He had seen this type of wound before from a delusion, a delusion made from crystal marrow, and it had been years since he’d seen one.
He decided he might as well bring you to Nahida's. You'd just have to get your wounds dressed again there, whenever you decided to wake up of course. The sun was rising as students began to make their way into the Akademiya. A few familiar faces turned their heads, gawking at the two of you. He rolled his eyes wondering if they had never seen a sleeping student before as he carried you through the school.

PART I < PART II < PART III (finale)
Tumblr media
Strange, Zhongli really is the epitome of an oddity. You don't know if he was previously a magician or he simply knows how to make Mora appear out of thin air. Either way, you get freebie whenever he accompanies you in your untimely stroll
Though every freebie means a reward for saving his ass from getting scammed. The amount of times he hands off Mora to a person, who clearly has insidious motives, without second thought pales in comparison to the age of the late Archon.
You thought being friends with Hu Tao has taught him something, but clearly he's an airhead at heart when it comes to money.
Then came a particular day when you and Zhongli stroll in the streets of Liyue, you both passby a travelling storyteller who's halfway of retelling the tale of the lone warrior who sacrificed their life to save a Goddess.
". . .they were heavily guarded and fought neither for the Seven Seats nor to survive. Lady Guizhong also wrote in her tale that they were buried somewhere in the Guili Plains to commemorate the Lone Warrior's good deeds."
Eons of living can grant you insurmountable patience and restraint from spitting unfiltered comments that a person may take umbrage, you thoroughly believed you've mastered those skills long ago, if you slip a crack then you'd almost be an oxymoron.
"Bullcrap."
. . .You are a moron, after all.
You gained an immediate reaction from the consultant beside you who perched an eyebrow, seemingly intrigued.
You cough between your fist, "I don't intend to vilify Liyue's folklore, but that was straight up flawed."
Coming out as a bumptious person is the last thing you want now that you've gotten a new ally, but they were talking about you, more precisely about your past life as a swordsman.
Who knows someone better than themselves? And for Achon's sake why do they have to dub you as the Lone Warrior? Ugh, now you can sympathize what Diluc feels being called Darknight Hero. Yes, you know about his alter ego, can't fool a master disguiser.
"Why do you believe otherwise?"
"Huh?" When you gaze up at him, you saw the same intensity in his eyes when you first met him as he reiterated the question.
"O-Oh. . . sorry, I just didn't expect you to be open-minded when I literally called a famous Liyue story bullcrap."
The corners of his lips tugged up in a curious smile, "Let's assume we share the same thoughts, and I want to hear yours."
You didn't understand what he meant but his compelling voice made you speak your innermost knowledge of history without a shred of a doubt, "Most content of the tale is accurate since it was written by the Goddess herself, from the description of their appearance, their background, and deeds before the spark of the Archon war, it's all veridical. However, the part where the Warrior is buried somewhere in the Guili Plains is what makes it erroneous."
"How so?" Zhongli queried almost immediately when you paused for a second to construct the proper words without offending the anyone who opposed your opinions.
"First and foremost, the Lone Warrior was never buried in the first place, for their body was nowhere to be found amongst the corpse of the warpath. Instead of saying they were buried, Lady Guizhong built a stone slab in the Guili Plains to commemorate the Warrior however, due to the circumstances of the Karmic Dept, the slab is most likely destroyed from the uncontrolled rampage of a Yaksha."
As far as you can reckon, the Yaksha who destroyed the slab must have died feeling guilty for eradicating the one memoir of the Lone Warrior. At that time, it was all a speculation from you who knows what the Yaksha must be feeling, but now all of it don't matter.
Saving Guizhong is a choice you've never regretted, Morax felt happy and contented in her presence, it's enough to suffice everything. A simple stone slab won't change your standpoint, even without one you'd gladly do it for the second time.
"What about you, Zhongli? You said we. . ."
Your voice slowly fades away with the wind to carry out amongst the trees and may Barbatos hears this conversation to let him know he had found his Y/N.
He had always imagine what sort of interaction happens between two bards, given the fact you've once told him you play the lyre when you were a child, he's eager to see you in action.
"Hmm, as I thought, we do share commonity in the matter."
That piqued your interest, "Pray tell."
You've never met anyone who's well versed in history like you do.
"I also believe the Lone Warrior never had their deserved burial, but Guizhong made it possible to tell the tale of the mortal who made saved her life. While I personally think they're righteous, it still baffles me why would they sacrifice themselves for someone they're not well acquainted with."
You awkwardly laugh at his astute observation, feeling the perspiration forming on your forehead. Historians often ask the same inquiry; why did they save Guizhong? The tale itself didn't hold any answer for that, and a handful of Liyue citizens doubt the honor of the Lone Warrior because of this— Zhongli is one of them.
"Regardless of their intention, the Lone Warrior has my respect, for their sacrifice has led for another woman's salvation, it is nothing to be easily disregarded." Zhongli added, taking a few steps ahead.
"I've noticed how you accolade the people of the past, especially their noble hearts and their contribution to Liyue. It almost sounds like it's what you do to your. . . umm, deceased loved ones."
His eyes bleaked, for a moment you thought you crossed a line, but he spoke in a solemn voice, "I have actually, I've lost so many good people over the years, but I've learned to move on and look back in the past with a smile."
Yeah, you definitely crossed a line just there.
Your eyes find purchase on your shoes, "You're a strong man, Zhongli. I can only imagine how you managed to do that. Is that one of the factors you decided to become a consultant?"
He seemed to hesitate to answer, as if contemplating his thoughts first, ". . .I wouldn't say it's a defining factor, but yes."
"Do you ever look back to your loved ones without. . . hurting as much as it did on the first time?"
"It's a good thing to remember someone who meant a lot to you, but if the memory of that person is making you suffer, you need to let them go. You might feel guilty at first, but after a while you'll be able to think of them again without hurting nor feeling guilty."
Just then, a fierce wind struck and swept through their bodies. The dry leaves that hung from the branches rustled loudly as moonlight illuminated. Zhongli, who silently looked towards the clamoring branches, murmured in a low voice only for your ears.
"Do not rush yourself to move on, everyone has different pace. It might take you years or decades, even centuries and I'll still be with you, so do not worry about going through this alone."
Did you hear that? It's the sound of your heart thundering.
Before you know it, you were giggling to yourself.
Your laughter bubbles up from between your lips like a clear spring, unrestrained peals of genuine amusement. The sound is so mellifluous, he almost can’t find it in him to comprehend that it came at his expense. It makes him feel special.
"It makes me think how old you really are, you sound like you've been living for thousands of years." You jested. "You're not wrong." He promptly followed. What...? That must've been a joke, eh?
"You sure do know how to do your job. I felt better after hearing that. Thank you, Zhongli."
One moment you were facing him, the next you're suddenly squashed against his chest as he cages you in his arms protectively. Not a good position to be in when your heart began to pump rapidly as his scent rubbed on you.
You were about to ask him what was the matter when you heard an audible and heavy thump behind you followed by a burst of the Geo element. Zhongli looked down on you.
"I apologize for my action, but your life was on the line, so I acted out of instinct." Yet he doesn't make any indication to let you go any time sooner, his hold on you only tightens.
You hid your flushed cheeks by coughing, "I'm not made out of glass, I can handle myself perfectly fine." Yet you didn't move from where you are and held onto his clothes.
"Correct, a few slimes are no big deal, but I can't take any compromises when it's comes to you, Y/N."
"I-If you have time to flirt then just get on with the slimes." You demanded with a huff. You should've seen how he had looked like a lost puppy, "But I wasn't flirting with you, I'm merely expressing my thoughts regarding about you."
"That's even worse!" You exclaim, having no courage to look at him.
That night felt like some distant memory, some dream too far for him to grasp. He thought of your eyes, shimmering in the light of the moon, of your laugh, loud and joyous.
He could picture you perfectly, the warm orange of the lanterns lighting half of your face while the cool light of the moon illuminating the other side.
And it's not a secret he's enamored with you. Even Xiao can deduce the subtle smile everytime your name is mentioned. He hasn't seen an ardor look on him for hundreds of years, it felt anomalous to see him blush like a teenager.
The Traveler and the floating emergency food didn't seem to mind the two, but Paimon has been really curious about it.
If Zhongli likes you then can't he just straight up confess that in your face? Life would've been so simple if people are straightforward🙄
Rough representation;
Tumblr media
There's no concrete answer for it yet, liking Zhongli more than what you two are amidst the process of your healing would seem like he's taken you out of pity.
You don't want that type of relationship. You opt to sort yourself before consulting your mixed feelings you have with the consultant.
And by that literally means;
"You want to accompany the traveler in Jueyun Karst?" You responded with a resigned sigh.
Each day spent with him only shows a fraction of how ridiculous you probably sound to a youthful man.
Everyone in Liyue knows no mortal can get in Jueyun Karst, even if they did there would be no merit to achieve unless you're seeking for a beautiful view of the clouds.
"Yes, the adepti Ganyu had gone missing for days, the traveler asked me if I know the shortest way to Jueyun Karst, and I proposed to be their guide."
Lies.
The traveler is capable of navigating their way to Jueyun Karst.
In fact, they already left this morning and it's noon as you speak.
You only used that excuse to skedaddle your way out of the dilemma you got yourself into. You need the cortisol to die down. And that won't happen if the said dilemma is with you (e.t. Zhongli)
"Hmm. . . so, you've been in Liyue before yet you still accepted my offer to give you a tour." His statement gives off an accusatory tone, but his lopsided grin tells you otherwise.
You shot him a sheepish smile. "How can I let the opportunity of conversing with a handsome man go to waste? There's a reason why I'm an adventurer, Zhongli."
He shakes his head, "How long you'll be away?"
"Not that long, I'd say only a few hours. Why? Are you going to miss me?"
You only meant it as a joke, you didn't think he'd take it seriously.
"Yes."
You see, this is the reason why you want to avoid him.
Tumblr media
Hah! In the end, you found yourself winded up somewhere in Yujing Terrace. You heard Glaze Lillies bloom in this area, it reminded you of My. Tianheng where a field of Glaze Lillies can be found everywhere.
"Another flower is blooming, such a beautiful sight, if only life can be as beautiful as these Glaze Lillies." You nearly yelp at the sudden voice speaking near your ear and reeled back.
"Oh, dear. I'm sorry if I had scared you." An aged lady with her gray hair tucked in a low bun spoke. "I'm fine. . ."
"Call me Madame Ping. You look quite familiar to me, child. Are you perhaps the adventurer the Wangsheng consultant was talking about?" You crane your neck at her question.
"U-Uh. . . if you're talking about Y/N L/N then yes, that would be me. May I ask what made you so certain it's me?"
"Ah! He hasn't stopped talking about you since he visited this place. That man is so stoic looking, but when he hears your name it looks like he's a different man all of a sudden."
You closed your eyes, inhaling deeply through your nose in any attempt to bring your nerves down. You had heard those words on multiple occasions— that Zhongli was different around you, that he cared for you like he cared for no one else. There had been a few times where that statement rang true. Some that don't.
Zhongli felt like a breath of fresh air, a sunshine on a cloudy day, a tall mountain summit from afar. You loved the way he listens to your beliefs, you loved the way he trusts you with his secrets and experiences, you loved the way he deeply cares to others, you love the way he seemed to brighten up every room he walked into.
Goddamn you love everything about that man!
Even his stupidity to pecuniary is lovable.
Somehow he managed to bring joy to the same place you always associated with agony— every corner of the place was happier with him around.
It's no wonder you feel something that can only be named as infatuation— a feeling you once harbored towards Morax, but failed to realize it until your death.
But that had been so long ago, back when you were a little kid determined to become an adult. Now you're an adventurer with a thousand adventures under your belt. Now you were strong and experienced and prepared. And yet, you're still hesitating. Why?
"What seems to cause your inner turmoil, child?"
Your breath hitched and your intake became shallow, it feels like being reborn again. An advantageous thing about reincarnation is that you get to experience love in many forms, mainly familial love.
It was your gateway from the gripping anxiety you feel whenever you overhear hearsay in your town about Morax.
But not once did a family ever asked you for your problems, it's not their fault being unaware of your curse and if they did ask you would've probably non the wiser— it was because they don't share the same sentiment having to live for thousand years.
With Madame Ping, you feel so inclined to relay your thoughts as if you're indeed a child ranting problems with your mom, something about her just puts your mind at ease. And you only just met her not too long ago.
You took a deep breath and tore your gaze from the Glaze Lillies, "There's this man that I fostered feelings for, since I started liking him. . . I always felt like I'm standing over burning charcoal. Do you know what that feels like? Not being able to stop my feet from moving even for a moment. I can't run. I want to, but there's something holding me back."
"Hmm, that sounds too complex," she sighs, "then again, being young has many complexities just as we adults have. With the way you're describing it, I won't say it's holding you back, child."
You lifted your gaze at her, confusion now painted your features.
"If I were to put it, you're simply tangled up in your past."
"W-What—"
"And you need closure if you want to face your feelings head on."
A closure? Is that what I'm missing? Should I vent my pent up feelings? Ugh. . . Will that really help?
Sensing your dubious demeanor, Madame Ping smiled, "You do not need to heed my words. I'm simply offering a suggestion."
"No, I'll consider it. In fact, I think it's the best course to deal with this. Thank you, Madame Ping!"
And so you dash from the place in search of something.
You run pass the vast greenery of viridescent grasses and colorful wildflowers— a meadow, where you'd usually go for meandering while accompanied by the evening breeze or gilding sunlight. It was perfect setting of tranquility for a maladaptive daydreamer like yourself. You'd imagine yourself laying down and naming the constellations that coincidentally appear in the sky, or count the exotic birds that flew by, or hum a tune that's been lost in history.
Looking at you now versus your past self equates for hypocrisy.
An amalgamation of both morose and agitated countenance now marred your features. Any person who sees you would imagine how tumultuous your life has been, it's nowhere near nirvana.
Trembling as you arrived at your destination, you stand in front of Morax's statue and traces the meticulous handwork with the pads of your fingers. The entire place feels like him, as though you’re with him at arms reach, but too far to actually hold him.
"It's really pathetic how I try so hard to move on, only to come back to you when something is amiss in my life," you murmured, "but I'm not here to endlessly whine about every misfortune in life, I want to release this feeling in order for me to be appeased."
You heaved a deep breath.
"I love you, Morax. I still do. No amount of flowery apologies can fix the damage I made for stalling my confession to you. I was young and had a plethora of uncertainties that made me second-guess myself. I guess. . . the guilt of leaving you pushed me to the brink of watching over you throughout my consecutive reincarnations, I wanted to make sure you were happy. And now, I want to be happy too. I feel happy with Zhongli and I don't want to make the same mistake of hesitating then later regret on it."
Some days your sadness was a mild lisp. It barely scratched the surface of your voice, but today melancholy had waged a full scale assault on your vocal chords.
"I've decided I'll confess to him, not today, I still need to build the courage to face him. I'm thankful for the time we spent our earliest days together, truly I am, but it's time for me to move on. One day I will look back on our childhood and say 'I love you' once more without the lingering ache in my heart. I'll never stop coming back to you, Morax. . . so, instead of bidding farewell, I'll see you later."
It felt good to vent your feelings out that you nearly cried that day as you walk back in Wangshu Inn and now you're ready to confess your feelings to the consultant whenever you're ready. And whether he'll accept it or not is entirely up to him.
Tumblr media
"Are you free this , Y/N?" A strange look obscured the consultant's face, what's even more strange is the fact he's not even looking you directly.
"Yes. . .?" Something tells you he's not in a good mood.
Crap. . . someone give him Mora! ASAP!
"I wish to speak with you alone. Will you come with me in Mt. Tianheng?" Asked the consultant who seemed a bit on edge this evening after you came back. His spurious stone cold expression obnubilated akin to the look of a man who's gearing up for war.
His ominous mien warranted your logic to say no to him, but you're too far on the line of sanity to even refuse the man you like. "Sure."
>> TIMESKIP. . .
You thought not confessing early to Morax before your death was the worst decision you've ever made. Think again, 'cuz this is most definitely the worst, baddest and stupidest decision ever.
You never made it a point to come back to this place— it brought back a storm of memories, some of which were more comfortable being shoved to the recesses of your mind and be kept there for eternity. But for whatever reason, you feel inclined to follow him and disregard the uneasiness of returning in Mt. Tianheng.
Zhongli has been strangely quiet all the way here, at this point he'd be randomly stating facts, not be a complete mute-walking pillar.
Thus, you suck up your inner turmoil and deal with it instead of fleeing right off the bat.
"You're strong for keeping your head up this far." He accolades suddenly to particularly no one, except if he was referring to you.
"Me?"
He comes to an abrupt stop and finally, FINALLY faces you. And shit do his visage screams he's not playing around. He's not here to be buddy-buddy with you. He looks genuinely distress.
About what though?
. . .
. . . . .
. . . . . . .
Oh. . .
Oh no!
Did he see through your lies earlier? That you're supposed to be with the traveler in Jueyun Karst? Double shit! Not good!
A thin sheen of sweat accumulated on your forehead as you try to come up with an excuse, "U-Uh. . ." but came up with nothing.
You mentally prepared yourself for a parade of admonishing words from Zhongli, you genuinely thought he's going to nitpick on why you shouldn't have lied to him and probably question the motives behind your action. At least that's what you thought.
"This guilt is unbearable even for an immortal."
"Yes, I know I lied about going with the traveler in—. . . Huh?"
What?
His eyes seemed to shine brighter than the stars as he stares deeply into yours. You sense an underlying promise in those determined orbs, it instilled the feeling of anticipation and anxiety.
"I am Morax."
The air suddenly became suffocating for YOU. Breathing gets hard. There’s this feeling in your chest that’s gnawing through your body, affecting your every movement.
Conflagrated flames and scalding ice, the physical feeling tied up in all the emotions that seem to leak from ZHONGLI'S features— fear, hope and adoration churned his guts.
An unkempt strand of your hair overshadowed your eyes from Zhongli's standpoint. It seems as though he made the decision that'll compromise the friendship he had built with you.
Being the bearer of the knowledge of your reincarnation didn't come easy for an immortal who's supposed to be imposing as a mortal.
Ever since he saw you paying respect for his passing, his instinct is blaring at him to tell you his true identity. Though he has to admit it's not entirely his gut-feel that added a major factor of what he had done now— it was his selfishness, yet again.
He had gone through multiple scenarios of what your reaction may be; Would you laugh at his face? Are you going to dismiss his claims and think it's a prank? Will you run away from him?
Not like it matters to him.
You can do all of those and he'd still want to be with you.
Heck! He knew you were telling a fib about your involvement in the Traveler's quest and it didn't change his feelings for you.
". . ."
As crickets filled his ears, he takes a feeble step forward and spoke in a solemm voice, "You must have a lot of questions, I can guarantee to answer all of them but know that it was never my intention to prolong your suffering by hiding my identity."
He knows.
He GODDAMN knows!
Your words broke up and all you could mutter were stuttering sounds. Hot tears streamed down your face, and squeezed your eyelids shut in the hope the tears would stop. Your choppy breathing and watery eyes remained for quite some time as stand there unmoving. What else is there to say?
Tumblr media
Before you know it, both of your shoulders were grasped in a firm but gentle grip of gloved hands. There's so many mixed feelings stirring in a boiling pot, and you can't make out a definite conclusion until you arrive in some sort of resulting point.
Are you angry for his decision to play dead? Betrayed he kept this from you? Pained that he didn't trust you? Relieved that he's really alive in the flesh? Happy that he knows it's you and you don't have to pretend around him? Which is it?
Amidst all the chaotic thoughts, you still feel safe in the presence of Zhongli— Yes, Zhongli. You hate how it feels so warm, you hate how you want to bask in his embrace, you hate the solace you find yourself in when he's around even in your worst time. Just then, similarly back in Inazuma, the sky shed tears to empathize your mourning heart. The heavens really find your suffering amusing.
In your haze vision, he was moving his lips but the words fell on deaf ears, your sense of hearing refuse to comprehend the meaning behind his statement. It's probably for the best.
Zhongli, the ever so keen who promptly took notice, snaked his arms around your shoulders and pulled you in a somber embrace and gently placed your head in his chest— an act of shielding you from the dangers of the world and offers you a safe haven.
The veil dropped and walls crumbled.
Your feeble hands grasped his flaunting waistcoat like a helping hand. Your scream synchronises with the thundering and the minimum space between you muffled the cries. Your undecipherable emotions echoes with the storm like a reflection on the mirror.
And everything leads to the man desperately clinging to your bare fingers on the cliffside of a bottomless pit you dug yourself into.
"Look at me."
Compelled to do so, you lifted your blurry gaze. A Geo Archon known for his wisdom and strength, is standing in his barest version. The version of a man who weeps only in the presence of whom he loves and trusts.

"Z-Zhongli. . ."
A single index finger met your quivering lips, "Shh. . . The rain isn't stemmed from sadness. So get drenched, and be refreshed. I hope it washes away the hot bitterness felt by your heart. When that hurt washes away, let's return home together."
". . . Together? It sounds surreal. . . I don't want to believe it."
"May I kiss you for proof?"
You're too absorbed in the heat of moment that every rational decision flew out the window, but maybe the most rational thing to do is to indulge yourself.
You nodded, with your permission Zhongli has never been the happiest till this day.
His lips descended on yours with fervor, immediately you can feel his desperation, his love, his determination, his grief— it's overwhelming it almost knocked you on your feet. Quite fortunate he has his hand on your back to keep you steady while the other is on your cheek as he drowns you in his presence.
You feel hot, it's unusual during the rain shower, but the hypnotic intimacy he applies in his action takes your breath away.
Heat pooled in your stomach, the prospect of kissing Zhongli is something you didn't know you'd be craving for more and your heart skipped a few beats.
Your whole body tingled, the feel of his towering frame leaning on you as he encased you in his arms felt like you're ascending to Celestia.
Albeit slowly, you felt yourself gradually being pulled up to the surface accompanied by the hands of your savior.
It still wasn't clear if he's dreaming this moment, but there was raw emotion in the way you weave your fingers through his free tresses and caress his scalp. Zhongli kept his eyes half open, sneaking a guilty glance at you every time he comes back for air to assure himself this isn't a product of his imagination.
He doubts the authenticity of it all. He's not sure if nature rooted for this moment or if Celestia tricked him into this perfect present to appease his guilt, but every passing second makes him want to stay in this illusion and for the first time in eons, he felt like a little dragon discovering new treasures— he discovered you yet again.
Slowly, the pull apart, chest heaving and face flustered.
Zhongli suddenly felt more guilt, he had acted out of the line and kissed without properly courting you, not so gentlemanly. The smile on your face, however, eased the guilt in his heart and subconsciously mirrored your smile, it was simply contagious.
"It's really you, huh? I can't believe I didn't realize it was you." You placed your palm on his cheek as to reassure your sanity, in response he leaned impossibly closer to your hand.
"Words cannot describe how much I want to expose myself to you, and how apologetic I am for staging my death. Had I've been aware of your existence and your knowledge of the past, I would have come up a different solution and not cause you more pain."
Yeah, it really is him. No other man can look after your feelings like he does, and there's no other man lovable as him.
"I really want to ask how did you know, not only of my reincarnation, but also my awareness of my previous life. Is it because you were a former Archon?"
Heaving a deep sigh, he pressed his forehead on yours, his fingers traverse down the corner of your lips until it wipes away from what it looks like the remnants of your tears.
"I don't need to be an Archon to know it's you. Your kindness, compassion and everything beautiful will always attract me no matter what form you may take. No other being can impersonate someone so precious as you, Y/N. It's why I knew it was you the moment you wear your heart on your sleeve."
Times like this always reminds you why you fell for him so hard.
"As for your memories of the past. . . you weren't exactly being cautious of your words when you were speaking to my statue. No normal mortal has ever called me Morax other than you."
Oh. . . you were rather grateful for it.
"So, you're saying I'm not normal to you?"
"Y/N, reincarnating while retaining your memories is not exactly a trait of a standard normal mortal." He does have a point.
"Hey, look. The rain has stopped."
Hands adorned of scars, bruises and wounds that once grasped the pointed end of every sharp edged rocks are now held by the calloused hands of another fighter.
You watch as the lustrous moon rose up the sky, pride was balm from its full fledged form, exuding sufficient fulguration for the inky night and the prodigious number of stars turned into extraordinary bright white hued after the rain. For the first time, the deepest somber night just came out of its humble abode.
He kept his eyes on you and his forehead glued on yours, it looks like he's not planning on letting you go any time sooner, "Indeed, it seems like your heart has eased up too."
"Yes, and I have you thank for that." You gently grabbed the wrist caressing your face and rubbed figures of eight. "Thank you for having the courage of revealing your true self, it have me the right to courage to fess up what's on my mind."
You pulled away from his embrace and took his hand on yours, you can feel his burning eyes fixated on your actions, "I never got the chance to confess everything when I was dying in your arms. I thought it was for the best, but I'll say it now."
Watching you straighten your spine, Zhongli couldn't hide his anticipation. He has vague idea what you mean, but he didn't want to keep his hopes up, so he remained calm and let you continue.
"I love you. Whether you're known as Morax, Rex Lapis, Zhongli or any other names, I'm hopelessly in love with you because to me you're the dragon who kept me safe from the dangers and prioritize me over your own happiness. You're my first friend, my first confidant, my first partner in crime, my first protector, my first crush and most importantly, you're my first love. You're my every first, and you'll be my very last."
Every joyful feeling known to man hit Zhongli like a meteor and he couldn't help himself to claim your lips once again. This time he was more gentler and more on conveying his overjoyed expression. The kiss was brief as he pulled away immediately.
"I have always adored you, Y/N. Your death nor your lack of reciprocation doesn't make my feelings any different. Do you remember the promise I made? I will take you at the highest peak of the sky, I meant it literally that time, I'm more willing to fulfill that promise both literally and figuratively.bI'm grateful to have met you in my life, and I'm more grateful that you feel the same as I do. I will do my best to keep you happy, Y/N."
"Dummy! I should be the one saying that." Your eyes began to feel moisture yet again. "Would you look at us. It took us a couple thousands of years before getting to this point, it's almost laughable and I— ACHOO!"
". . ."
". . ."
"Let's head back. It almost slip my mind humans are quite fragile even just a few drops of rain, and your drenched clothes are not helping."
"Aren't you the one who told me to get drenched and be refreshed?" You replied sardonically, though the lovesick smile on your face betrays you.
He chuckled, "Let's continue this back home."
Home with him. It sent the elephants stomping in your stomach. Forget the fluttering butterflies!
He intertwined your fingers with his as you both walk back with goofy smiles, "Yeah, let's head home."
An idyllic hilly meadow greeted your sight as you stand tall after an arduous journey. Beside you is the prize worth of every gems in the world. As your blood-soaked hand held his, the two of you embarked a new journey towards tomorrow.
And this this time, you won't be alone. Mazes may seperate you two along the way, you'll always find your way back to each other's arms. A farewell between star crossed lovers doesn't exist, for they will meet later on at the end.

Ayato is always prepared.
For all his life, he was prepared to become the best of the best, to ensure that his  family’s business is as prosperous as always, and to face many obstacles and those who dare to threaten the Yashiro Company.
For all his life, he never wished that his life would go different, that his life had never revolved around handling the Yashiro Company and could’ve lived freely. He never expected anything from school, the one thing that at least made him feel like he’s normal like his peers, and only thought the only important thing is the future that awaits.
You weren’t someone he considered important back then.
He’s heard of your name before, from Thoma’s lips as he happily chats away with the blue-haired man, from some student council officers who wondered if you’d be free to hang out with them, and from certain events in school that involved you in it.
You weren’t someone important, until you did.
Ayato always visits Komore Cafe whenever he can or when he needs something refreshing after a tiring day. However, the particular reason why he visited is because of Thoma’s absence. For the past weeks, the blonde-haired man has been spacing out often, causing Ayato to grow concerned for his dear friend. He thought it was because of how his family’s business started to blossom more than ever and was just exhausted from working, but when the blue-haired man visited, he later found out from Thoma’s mother that Thoma had recently gone home late.
Thoma never goes home late, as far as he knew at least.
It took perhaps thirty minutes after Ayato sat on his seat when his best friend arrived, but to his surprise, Thoma brought company.
The moment you entered inside the cafe, he felt like the world had grown brighter.
You brought his attention, strangely more than how most people that Thoma’s with. He wasn’t sure if it’s the way the sunlight made you exceptionally breathtaking, the way you lightly laughed at Thoma’s clumsiness and stumbled words (a side that Ayato never saw from his best friend), or the way you feel like you’re going to be more than just someone who has the same friend as he.
Whatever it is that made Ayato interested, he just knew he wanted you in his life, be it as a friend or–
No, that won’t happen.
But then it did.
One simple conversation and Ayato was curious. Two more conversations and Ayao wanted more. More conversations and Ayato is hooked.
Whenever he’s with you, it feels like he’s a whole different person. Instead of the disciplined and refined Kamisato Ayato, he’s just the mischievous and sickeningly sweet Ayato. Whenever he’s with you, it felt like you could see through him and read him like an open book, not because you’re a great observant person, but because he allowed you to – even if he sometimes didn’t mean to.
Whenever he’s with you, he falls even more in love.
He never planned for this to happen.
Romance was something he had never considered in his life, knowing that one day he’ll be in an arranged marriage should his father accept such an offer. However, now that he has you, he thought his father wouldn’t make him pursue arranged marriage – besides, his family loved you, how could there possibly be a chance he would be separated from the person he holds dear to his heart?
Yet here he is, getting ready for a wedding with the person who isn’t you.
The biggest regret of Ayato’s life was the inability to fight hard enough for you, choosing to follow his family instead of following the desires of his heart. The world went back to being bland, monotone even. How did he manage to live through his past without you? How can he go back to being the disciplined and refined Kamisato Ayato without the side that was often brought out because of you?
He wanted to cast his heart aside, but seeing your devastating face every single day in college was enough for him to be reminded that his heart still and always will be longing for you.
There was not a day where he wondered what could’ve been if he had decided to let the name and reputation of the Kamisato family go tarnished and chose to be with you, what could’ve been if he had ignored his blooming feelings for you back then and not be your boyfriend in the first place, or what could’ve been if fate was not so cruel to him.
Perhaps he should’ve ignored his feelings, then none of this would have happened.
If he ignored it, he wouldn’t have broken up with you and become cold towards you, ignored you for the rest of the days in college, spend sleepless nights in devastation and regret, made you despise him for the words he lied about, nor would he become a desperate soul longing for a forgiveness he can’t reach.
One of the things he didn’t exactly plan is inviting you to his wedding.
It was one thought at first, what if he’d invite you to the wedding and apologize? But then again, it would cause quite a ruckus if anyone, especially the Hiiragi family,  found out about his first love visiting the wedding.
That one thought turned to countless thoughts.
There’s nothing Ayato wants more than to have you as his lover. He’s no cruel man, he would never lash out the despair he holds on someone like Chisato – who’s only dragged to this as well and had no part in starting this marriage arrangement – but there were times when he wished he didn’t want to see her. What’s the point of waking up if you’re not the one who he sees?
He then decided no, he won’t invite you to the wedding. You most likely have moved on, maybe even met someone new, and maybe that someone is…
Foolish, Ayato thought to himself. You have no right to be jealous. Not when they’re no longer yours.
It took one conversation occurred between him and Thoma, who’s chosen as his best man for the wedding, that made the CEO think otherwise.
“Why don’t we invite Ei, Miko, and ( Name )? I think it would be a great reunion with our friends if they came.” Thoma brought up as he checks the guest list for Ayato.
The blue-haired man instantly looks at the blonde-haired man when he mentions your name. “Oh?”
He nods. “I’m sure they’ll accept it, especially since ( Name ) haven’t seen the others for so long, and besides, maybe you might… make up with them?”
Ayato chuckles, now understanding Thoma’s motives. “Ah, so you’re just here to suggest ( Name ), huh?”
The blonde-haired man’s cheeks turns red in embarrassment – or is it from thinking about you? “P-Partially.. I just think it’s best if you and ( Name ) finally settle things between you properly. They deserve to know–”
“Then it’s settled.”
“Huh?”
Ayato’s lips twitch upward. “I just needed someone to suggest the same thing as I, so let’s add them on the list, make sure that no one slips a single word about the… past relationship.”
Thoma’s eyes slightly widened, not expecting the man to easily accept the suggestion. “You.. You have my word. I’ll add them to the guest list and add three more invitations.”
The CEO hums in response, looking down to continue his work. “You’re dismissed then if that’s all.”
Thoma bows and walks out from the office, his mind has nothing but the thought of the way his boss, his best friend for so many years, looks exceptionally bright for the first time since forever.
Another thing he didn’t plan was to be speechless when he first sees you.
He still remembers your conversation about how you wanted your wedding to be in Mondstadt like it was yesterday.
To you, marriage was something you fantasized whenever the both of you talked about your shared future. To him, marriage was something he wanted whenever the both of you talked about your shared future.
“Ooh, perhaps we should pick Mondstadt as our location! Won’t it be sweet if you and I get married in Mondstadt? I hear they have romantic sceneries that are a wonderful sight.” You said, and Ayato watches you scrolling down your phone with a smile on his face. You look so cute when you’re so focused and fixated on your phone, he just can’t help but decide to hold you close to him!
He lets out a chuckle, the color pink dusted his cheeks from how close the both of you are. “Whatever makes you happy, love. It’d be great if the cathedral is available by the time we’re ready. I hear that it can make the wedding altar sceneric with how the sun reflects through the windows.” He spoke up, imagining the way the sunlight would shine on you, causing you to look more radiant than ever.
He could sense your smile. “It seems I’m not the only one who has researched.” You teased, and he couldn’t help but place his lips on your temple.
“Of course. You’re not the only one who’s looking forward to our future together.” He retorts, holding you closer as he relishes your presence with a happy sigh. “Nevertheless, even if things do not go our way, I’m sure we’ll be prepared for everything.”
But I wasn’t prepared for these circumstances. He thought at the back of his mind as he and Chisato continued to greet their guests.. How silly of me to even think I would be able to be with the person I want… His eyes darken slightly, the polite smile on his face was on the verge of disappearing.
Just as you said, the hotel was truly a magnificent place to stay in – the pictures you showed him didn’t give the hotel justice, in fact. If only you were here as his spouse instead, then perhaps the place would be vibrant–
The bored look on his face instantly disappears when his eyes land on familiar ones.
Not too far away from where he is stood the person who he wanted to be with for the rest of his life, looking as breathtaking as always as you continue to be unaware of his staring. You look happier than before when you were heartbroken from his breakup with you, and although you look older now, you're still the same person he fell in love with.
It felt like he was back to being the mischievous and sickeningly sweet student whose heart was taken by someone who loved him back.
Reality suddenly washes over him when you noticed him staring at you, his heart ached at the way your smile wasn’t seen on your features – you looked hesitant, as if you’re meeting the infamous CEO of the Yashiro business and not the man you once loved.
It felt like you now see him as a stranger.
“Dear?” Chisato calls.
He immediately looks away from your direction to look at his future bride, and he realizes that the guests he has been greeting have now left. “Are you alright, Ayato?” Chisato asks with a worried look on her face.
The blue-haired man smiles reassuringly. “I’m alright, I just spotted a long time old friend. Shall we get going and greet them?”
Chisato looks at where Ayato was staring, her eyes brightens at the sight of you. “Oh, it’s ( Name )! We should get going then, I’m sure you have a lot to talk about with them.”
Without hesitation, the couple went towards you, and Ayato sees the way your lips went upwards when you started talking to your plus one – who seems to look familiar for some reasons he couldn’t point out.
By the time he stands completely near to you, he instantly calls your name – something that he hasn’t spoken for such a long time.
“( Name ).”
You slowly turned around, causing him to see you clearly now that he’s closer to you. “It’s… been a while.” He spoke, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. “I’m glad you took the time to come here, I hope your trip to Mondstadt was alright.”
He didn’t mean to be so formal, but he knows people are watching.
“It’s been a while as well, Kamisato.” You replied, not noticing how hurt flashes through his eyes from how you called him by his surname as you look at Chisato, who gave you a polite smile. “You must be the lucky bride, I’m–”
“( Name ), right?” The woman interrupts, and despite being so close to you, Ayato felt so distant. “I’ve heard so much about you! Ayato here told me how you two were best friends for such a long time! I’m honored to meet you, I’m Hiiragi Chisato.”
He wanted more than just best friends.
Ayato sees the way you looked confused despite your attempts to hide it. Even after years of not seeing you, you’re still so easy to read like a book – or his favorite book, rather.
You then spoke. “Yes. I’m honored to meet you as well, Miss Chisato. I hope you’ll enjoy your stay here – Mondstadt’s a beautiful place for a wedding.”
A wedding that should’ve been yours and I, Ayato thought solemnly as Chisato giggled. “Oh I know. Ayato couldn’t stop telling me about how he had always wanted to get married in Mondstadt,” She suddenly wraps her arms around his, and he feels the urge to disappear from the look on your face. He felt so suffocated. “And how could I say no to this man? I’m glad I didn’t, the hotel surely made me amazed.” She adds.
The look you have on your face instantly washes away, letting out a light laugh. “Ah I see. Oh, I forgot to mention!” He watched as you gestured to the man standing beside you.  “This is my plus one, Zhongli. He’s my close friend and neighbor in Liyue.” You explained as Zhongli lightly bows at the couple, and Ayato couldn’t help but have his suspicions grow now that the man is closer. Where have I seen this man before? He wonders.
“Pleased to meet you both. I’d like to send my congratulations on your wedding.” Zhongli spoke smoothly.
Ayato dares not to show his suspicion, humming in acknowledgement. “You have our gratitude, Mr. Zhongli. Though, I can’t help but point out how you look… familiar. Have we perhaps met before?”
He pays no mind to the way you raised an eyebrow at his words as Zhongli clears his throat with a polite smile. “Ah well, I don’t think I recall. You must’ve mistaken me for another.” The brown-haired man spoke.
Liar, Ayato thought, but before he could persist, he was instantly interrupted by Chisato, who got excited at the sight of other familiar faces nearby.
“Oh Ayato, look! Your parents have arrived at last, we should greet them!” She said excitedly, not noticing the way her future husband’s breath hitches. “Excuse me for a moment. I hope you guys will enjoy your stay!”
“Likewise, Miss Chisato. We’ll be going to our room then.” You said with a smile, and Ayato could tell it was tense – probably due to the worries of getting possibly called out by them that you’re his ex.
He couldn’t help but wonder what could’ve been if you were the one who’s getting married to him.
“...I’ll be going now as well,” The blue haired man spoke, his polite smile threatening to falter as thoughts of you plague his mind like always. “It’s nice seeing you again… ( Name).”
Without another word, he left to follow Chisato, leaving you and your plus one alone together.
He wasn’t sure if there would ever be the day when you’d call him by his name from now on.
For the next few days, Ayato’s encounters with you are far from pleasant. They’re more-so tense, as if you two are strangers who are forced to get along with one another, as if you two are people with no chemistry.
It hurts, but this is on him.
He wanted to talk to you right away and come clean, but with the tasks he had to do for the wedding, it seems he won’t be able to talk to you any time soon much to his dismay.
By the time he did have the time to come up to your room one afternoon, he felt hesitant.
It took him perhaps 30 minutes as he stands in front of your hotel room, reciting the words in his head that will soon escape from his lips once he sees your face. It honestly made him remember the old days when he used to stand in front of your class trying to find the right words to use to invite you out for lunch with him – that’s how much you affect the so-called perfect Kamisato heir, leaving him at a loss for words at your waking moment.
When he gains the courage to ring the doorbell, the person who opens the door is not the one he’s looking for.
“...Good afternoon, Mister Kamisato.” Zhongli greeted, and Ayato felt disappointed that it wasn’t you who he saw. “May I help you?”
Ayato smiles politely. Oh well, you’re probably doing something in the room. “...Is ( Name ) here?” He asks.
His heart sank when Zhongli shook his head in response. “Unfortunately not. They’re outside hanging out with Miss Miko and Miss Shogun.”
They must’ve explored around the city after their lunch, Ayato assumes, regaining his facade once more when he realizes that his smile slightly dropped. “Oh.. I see.. I was hoping I was going to talk to them about something..” Ayato supposes he can talk to you another time.
As if reading his mind, Zhongli then spoke. “You can visit again tomorrow. From what I remember, ( Name ) won’t be having any plans in mind on that day.”
The blue haired man nods slowly. “I understand, thank you for telling me.”
Despite planning on walking away, Ayato’s feet are glued to the floor, debating whether or not he should continue talking to your dear friend.
“If… I may be bold to ask, what’s your relationship with ( Name )?” He asks.
Zhongli tilts his head. Although you have already spoken about him being your close friend, Ayato couldn’t help but feel the urge to ask about his relationship with you – mainly because of how the other man seems to be more than what meets the eye. “...( Name ) and I are neighbors. We’ve been friends ever since they traveled to Liyue.”
“I see,” Ayato murmured, shoulders slowly relaxed when he thought of how you became friends with someone as soon as you arrived in Liyue. “...I take it that they’re doing well in Liyue?”
“Why don’t you ask ( Name ) that when you try to talk to them tomorrow?” Zhongli retorts. “I’m sure they’re willing to tell you. That is.. If you have good intentions when you come up to them.”
Ayato felt surprised. How bold, he thought. It’s reasonable though, especially when he had hurt you enough. “You’re a good friend, Mister Zhongli. Rest assured that I don’t have any ill intentions towards ( Name ).” Nor do I intend to, he thought. “I shall not waste your time any longer, thank you for providing some answers for me. I just want to..” He hesitates for a moment. “...know how they’ve been.”
“It’s no problem, Mr. Kamisato.” Zhongli nods. “Have a good day.”
The next day, Ayato had plenty of encounters with you.
However, said encounters didn’t involve him talking to you. Not when he often sees the infamous Diluc Ragnvindr with you.
How on earth did you two know each other? He questioned. It isn’t out of jealousy, of course, but out of curiosity. Seeing how awkward the both of you look with one another, it seems that you have only known each other recently.
He always sees the both of you by the dining room of the hotel, the convenience store where he saw you snatch the last grape juice away in front of the tycoon while he was waiting for his boba to be served, the gym,
And by the lobby, where everything just went wrong.
Ayato managed to see you walking towards the elevator alone, and he was debating on whether or not right now is the best time to talk to you.
When he notices you catching him staring, he doesn't feel any shame or embarrassment, just agonized when he sees the way your face drops and looks away from his direction.
He then decides to walk towards you, thinking that if he won’t confront you now, then when?
But today was not his day, it seems.
As you try to walk away, you accidentally bump into someone, causing Ayato to instantly rush over and hold you back from falling to the floor, your back facing him. He ignores how the person that bumped into you walked away, too distracted from the fact that he has you in his hold.
How long has it been since he held you?
“...Mr. Kamisato.” You spoke, and without hesitation you took a few steps away from him with a small frown, something he didn’t fail to notice.
He dares not to look hurt. “..Are you alright?” He asks, glancing behind him to try and look for the person who bumped into you, only to be dismayed when he sees no one among the crowd. How dare they bump into you and not apologize?
“It’s a good thing I managed to catch up, it’d be a shame if my guest became injured during such a special occasion–”
“Thank you,” You interrupted, and he quickly shut his mouth. It’s as clear as the day that you’re uninterested to talk, but he couldn’t find himself to leave you again. “I apologize for disturbing you with my recklessness, I’ll be going no–”
He stops you just as you try to take another step to walk away. “Do you mind if…” He hesitates. “If you and I could talk for a while?”
You turned around to look at him. “..Talk about.. What?”
Ayato felt a bit taken back. Of course you wouldn’t assume he’s going to talk about the past, not when he had avoided it back then. “About… us back then. I would like to apologize for what I did to you.” He explains slowly. He’s here to apologize, not to tell you how much he misses you.
Even when forgiveness is out of his reach, he still wants you to know that he regrets it and would never forget it.
“...Why now…?” You spoke.
His eyes widened. “...Pardon?”
You move your hand away from his grip right away, and his heart sank. He remembers how much he suffers in silence back then in college, how much he wanted nothing more but to run to your arms every time you tried to come up to him, how much he always wanted you to be the one who has his ring and no one else, how much he want to see you again even when he could’ve go to Liyue with the snap of his fingers, and to remove the pained look that your eyes hold that he caused.
Why did it have to be like this?
It was evident that he has to face the fact that he still refuses to move on.
“Did… Did you expect me to easily forgive you, Mr. Kamisato?” You spoke shakily, your eyes refusing to meet his. His face drops from your explanation, leaving him speechless.
However, before he could try to reply, someone suddenly interrupts the conversation.
“Ayato, my son!”
Ayato shuts up when he hears his father’s voice, the words that were stuck in his throat disappear at once. Why did he have to appear now?
As Mr. Kamisato chats with you, the thoughts that ran through Ayato’s head was nothing but how much he wants to take you somewhere private as he watches the way you look even more overwhelmed.
He isn’t sure which one he despises, the way he holds a little despise towards his own parents or the way he knows that you’ll start avoiding him more now that you know his intentions – as if this is his punishment for avoiding you for so long during college.
Either way, he knows he doesn’t deserve you.
The rest of the conversation you have with his father was all a blur, it only stopped when he realizes you’re trying to stop the conversation with his father.
“Indeed they did, I should uhm.. I should get along now, I forgot that I have an appointment that’s due.” You spoke, not noticing how Ayato sees the way your hands started to get fidgety.
He’ll help you, his apology can wait.
Before his father could say a word, Ayato finally talked. “I can escort you if you’d like. I’m on my way towards the elevator as well.”
“Ah, let’s not bother Mx. ( Last Name ), son.” Mr. Kamisato spoke immediately, eyeing at your direction with a concerned look. “I’m sure Mx. ( Last Name ) can go to where they need to be without you. We wouldn’t want people to misunderstand the situation if they ever see you two together, right?”
Ayato shoots his father a frown. Of course his father prioritizes reputation, but why can’t he just realize that you’d rather be somewhere else than here?
Before the CEO could protest, he realizes someone is now standing behind you.
“...Mx. ( Last Name ).”
His eyes widen when he hears a familiar voice.
“...Mr. Ragnvindr.” You breathe out, turning around to see the red-haired man. Ayato couldn’t help but wonder about Diluc's motives – it’s unusual for the aloof tycoon like this – especially with the way he looks at you differently.
“Oh? It seems you know Mx. ( Last Name ), Mr. Ragnvindr.” Ayato’s father spoke up, his shoulders relaxed. “How unexpected, if I may be so bold to comment.”
Diluc hums in response. “Indeed we have. We actually just met a few days ago outside the hotel. We’re planning on visiting the.. Restaurant upstairs to get to know each other more.”
Ayato’s eyes slightly widens – Wait, are they–
The red-haired man clears his throat immediately. “As friends, of course.”
The CEO looks in your direction to see if you’re uncomfortable with Diluc’s presence, only to see you laugh lightly.  “Uhm, yes.. I was actually going upstairs to meet up with Mr; Ragnvindr there! B-But it seems I must’ve taken quite a while from how.. I was carried away with the conversation I had with you guys.” You explained. From the way you talked, it’s no lie that you’re definitely making it up, and you now have someone who can take you to your room.
As long as you’re alright, then who is he to try and ruin your chance?
A stiff smile grew on his face. “I see.. I shouldn’t take your time too long then,” He then gives Diluc an acknowledged nod. “I hope you have fun. Shall we take our leave now, father?”
Ayato’s father nodded right away. “Of course. I had a pleasant time with you, Mx. ( Last Name ).”
You nodded in response with a small smile. “I had a… pleasant time as well, Mr. Kamisato, as well as Mr. Ayato Kamisato.”
Without another word, the four of you went away to the opposite directions.
As soon as Ayato and his father went to a less crowded area, he felt his father’s eyes bore on him with a warning look on his face.
“Be careful next time, Ayato.” He whispers, eyeing around the room cautiously. “If one of them finds out about ( Last Name ), who knows what they’ll do. So if you’re trying to talk to them, find a better way and a private place.”
The light in Ayato’s eyes dims, remembering the reason why all of this is happening in the first place. “...I apologize, father.”
His father lets out a sigh, looking at where you had left with Diluc. “It’s… alright. Just make sure to be more careful – for both their sake and our family’s.”
With his father’s words taken to heart, Ayato indeed found a way to talk to you in private.
Today is September 27, the day before the joint bachelor and bachelorette party, and the groom decides to use the opportunity to talk to you while everyone else is scrambling to prepare for the upcoming event.
Just like before, there were multiple times when he encountered you.
He meets you in the morning whereas he spots you taking a stroll in the hotel’s garden area peacefully. His stomach flips at the sound of your light laughter from something your friend is saying, whose smile is as wide as yours.
He feels grateful that you have someone like Zhongli to hang out with, but he still felt a bit suspicious of the man.
Not wanting to ruin your peaceful time, he decided to just try and talk to you when he meets you again next time.
Said next time happened in the buffet room. While Ayato was eating lunch with Thoma, he noticed you walking by with your meal. He was about to excuse himself and try to come up to you until his best man started bringing up questions regarding the party tomorrow while not noticing your presence, leaving the groom no choice but to keep his excuse silent and answer all of the blonde-haired man’s questions.
When Ayato finished answering, he tried to excuse himself again, only this time he stopped when he saw you talking to some of your friends with a huge smile on your face, something he never sees when you talk to him this week, as you take a bite of your favorite food (that was somehow available in the buffet)
Nevertheless, he feels happy to see that you still like to eat your favorite food, but he wanted Itto, who’s with you by the table, to stop snatching some of your food away to eat it.
Not wanting to ruin your conversation with your old friends, he decided to try and talk to you when he meets you again next time.
The next time he sees you, the both of you are in a cafe called Cat’s Tail. While he’s sitting by the corner of the cafe alone, he notices you entering the cafe alone, making a beeline towards the cash register to get your order.
He observes you without you noticing his presence. He thought to himself that if you end up staying in the cafe, he’ll try to come up to you and sit across from you to come clean.
Much to his relief, you went towards one of the tables and sat there.
He feels a bit nostalgic that the table you went to is similar to your favorite spot back in Komore’s Cafe from Inazuma, he could still remember back when he always sat across from you as you try to study for upcoming quizzes and exams. For the past years since you had left, he simply stays by your favorite spot every time he visits the cafe, hoping that one day if faith isn’t cruel, he gets to see you instead of an empty chair in front of him.
Before Ayato could stand up to come up to you, he stops himself when he sees an employee walking towards him with his order. He’s grateful that his name wasn’t called, given that it’d make you become aware that he’s in the same room as you.
Reluctantly, he decided to not go to you just yet, not wanting to be seen as rude to the server who’s completely oblivious.
By the time the server was finished and took her leave, Ayato instantly looks at where you are, only to see you walking out from the cafe with your order in hand.
Not wanting to ruin your small break, he decides to try and talk to you when he meets you again next time.
The next time he meets you, it’s now in the elevator.
He was on his way up to your hotel room when you suddenly entered the floor, all the words he had in his mind went on the verge to disappear – this time, he made sure not to forget.
This time, Ayato made sure to no longer push this aside for “next time” and finally talk to you.
Meanwhile, your mind goes blank as soon as you realize who was in front of you, not expecting Ayato out of all people to be in the same elevator as you.
There’s no going back now, you thought to yourself before awkwardly entering the platform, and the blue-haired man took a few steps on the side to give you space.
If there was another person in the same elevator as the both of you, then the tense atmosphere would surely be as clear as glass.
“...I apologize if our encounter last time made you uncomfortable, ( Name ).” He broke the silence a few seconds after the elevator closed. “I only wanted to discuss important matters with you, but… it seems that I should have known my boundaries and try harder in taking my father away before he could bother you more.”
You slightly get tense as your mind calculates your response, refusing to look at your ex. “...It’s alright.. I’m guessing you still want to talk about us back then..?”
Ayato nods slowly, swallowing the lump in his throat. “I do.”
He sees the way your shoulders slumps, and he immediately wants to take his word back. “But seeing how I’m too late for that, it’s understandable if you don’t want to.”
You became quiet for a few seconds. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t nervous– did he take it too far? Did he do it at a bad time? Would you hear him out?
“This is… late.” You comment carefully. “I don’t know what even made you think today out of all the years you could’ve talked to me is the best time to do it, but if it helps you with your wedding, then do as you please. Just don’t assume I’d forgive you now..”
He hesitated for a moment and let out a light sigh.
“What Chisato and I have is… an arranged marriage.” What she and I have is nothing compared to what you and I had, he thought.
.
.
.
You stayed silent after that. Even when you had a few seconds before a “ding!” is heard, even when the elevator opens and displays the number of your floor, even when Ayato stares at you with a desperate look on his face – wanting you to at least give a reaction instead of this – you didn’t say anything no matter what.
It was only when you turned around to face him after walking out from the elevator, and he couldn’t recognize you with that look on your face, not when he hasn’t seen it for so long since college.
“I don’t want your apology.” You said, your voice grew soft. “Letting you go was the hardest thing I’ve ever done… and I want to move on now.” Pain flashes through your eyes as Ayato’s heart shatters at this moment, the elevator suddenly starts closing.
You suddenly stopped it from closing, wanting to say more as the elevator reopens itself. “That woman you’re getting married to loves you – she looks at you the way I do and I’m sure you will be happier with her than with me.”
He opens his mouth, only for you to silent him by shaking your head in dismay. “Whether or not you disagree with me, it doesn’t matter. It’s too late for you and I to even consider going back to the way we used to be, so you might as well just try to be happier in your wedding instead.”
You noticed how the elevator starts closing, causing you to take it as your cue to leave. “Be happy, Kamisato Ayato. That’s the only thing I ask from you.”
Just like that, the elevator was close shut, leaving the CEO alone with his thoughts and shattered heart filled with regret.
The look on your face that will haunt his mind from now on has reminded him of a certain incident before, specifically the day that made you finally come to terms and stop talking to your ex.
“This is different,” He interrupts. “You are different.”
You scoffed. “What does she have that I don’t? Is it the money? Her reputation? Her company?!”
He stays silent for a moment, and despite being with him for so many years, his expression right now is something you have never seen before.
“My love.”
Those words are enough to make your eyes widen as your breath hitches.
“...What do you mean?” You breathe out, watching as something flashes through his eyes when he realizes what he said. It must’ve been a regret for confessing what he said.
“Unlike you,” He hesitates for a moment before letting out a sigh of defeat, “she has my love.”
It took a few minutes for you to process what he had just said, when it did, you felt like the whole world – your own world –  was crashing down around you.
That was all a lie, ( Name ). Ayato thought, his head hung low as the elevator started moving towards his floor. You’re different from her or anyone else. You have my love.
He suddenly clutches to his chest, the aching in his heart was something he knew he will have to get used to. And it seems it’ll be like this forever.
Ayato is always prepared.
But the two things he didn’t prepare for was you coming to his life
and letting you go.
As the elevator closed shut, you felt like your knees became jelly, overwhelmed by your discovery as you tried to hold it all together.
You knew you should’ve stayed in Liyue.
You stayed there for what felt like an hour, when in reality you’re just there for a few minutes, staring down at the elevator in helplessness.
For some odd reason, you feel like a burden – big or small, it doesn't matter anymore – has been lifted off from your shoulders. Could this be because you now know what you wished to know for so long? Or the fact that you now know that Ayato isn’t who you thought he was and is on the same page as you all along?
Whatever it may be, you could only wish that he will be a happy man,
Because if his marriage goes downhill, then all the pain and heartbreak you went through would’ve been a waste.

04 - Investigation Continues
Trial by Fire (Wriothesley x Reader) - TW/CW in masterlist
[<<< previous chapter] • [masterlist] • [next chapter >>>]
“The production zone could use a hand in inventory, I think the work there may suit you more than manually making the Gardemeks, that one requires a lot more strength,” the guard looked up from his clipboard and gave her a smile, "don't hesitate to come to me if you have any problems."
That was three days ago.
(y/n) was honestly taken aback. She had expected people- prisoners to be more… Rude? Rough? But everyone here seemed to be nice with each other.
Shaking her head, (y/n) reminded herself that it's only a matter of time. She's innocent, a victim caught in the spider web of investigation and lies, and Navia is on the surface working to get her out. If there's anyone (y/n) can trust, it's Navia.
Anyway, (y/n) needed to speak with the Duke. He was away when she first got to the Fortress, and the production people had kept her busy since then. Perhaps after hours at night? Is he even back yet?
She sighed and resigned herself to stacking boxes of spare parts on shelves. (y/n) had categorized each area assigned to her so that it becomes easier for her when the time comes to get specific boxes ready.
(y/n) eyed the final box, it was filled with scrap metal, but it was completely full. The only empty spot that goes for that category would be the one further up. She looked around for more empty boxes, perhaps splitting up the contents would work-
Distracted by her thoughts, she did not see - nor hear, the sound of heavy boots walking towards her. Suddenly the man was already beside her and picking up the box.
"So does this go into that empty slot up there?"
(y/n) turned to look, and came face to face with a tall muscular man, her own height barely passing his shoulder. He donned a black shirt under a grey vest, with his jacket draped over his shoulders. His hair seemed to have a permanent bed head style which shows off the grey tufts in between the black ones. He looked like someone who would enjoy energy drinks while listening to heavy metal music, she thought, before she snapped out of it once she noticed his steel blue eyes looking into hers, awaiting an answer.
"Um… yeah there." (y/n) pointed at the empty spot.
He placed the box there seemingly without effort. He clapped the dust off his hands and loosened his red tie. "You're new here."
It wasn't a question.
"Yeah," (y/n) replied.
-and I'm not supposed to be here, I'm innocent. I was framed.
"Sorry I wasn't here when you came in. I'm the Duke."
(y/n) stared at him. So that's why he was dressed so differently from the other guards, despite the similar colour scheme.
"Y-your Grace." She nodded at him politely, "I'm (y/n), I was hoping to see you to discuss some things regarding me being here."

After further checks from the doctors, she was given the clear to see more visitors. Navia had rushed inside after that. She was the first familiar face she had seen after Wriothesley. (y/n) missed her friend dearly.
However, (y/n) could tell that Navia was being careful with both her words and touch. Navia did not ask anything about her time in captivity, instead choosing to speak more mundane everyday things, like what cake she likes lately. Wriothesley must have warned her, or maybe the nurses did. Eitherway, the visit was kept short, a nurse then came to get her when the time was up.
Once visits were over, Wriothesley was the one who kept her company while she had dinner, then he had to leave to meet up with Neuvillette to discuss matters in regards to… the recent events. He had made sure that she was asleep before he left, leaving her room at the capable hands of the two guards outside.
It felt almost like a routine now. Every few days Wriothesley, Navia, and Neuvilette would meet at the safety of Neuvilette's office, occasionally joined by Aether and Paimon, which was the case this time.
“Wriothesley,” Paimon greeted, ”how’s (y/n)?”
“Her recovery is progressing nicely. Now that visitors are allowed to see her, why don’t you stop by to say hi sometime.”
Aether nodded, “sure, we’ll stop by before we go take another commission tomorrow.”
“It was nice to see her again,” Navia smiled as Wriothesley took a seat next to her, “still, (y/n) felt different, sometimes her eyes glaze over as if she’s elsewhere, then it focuses on you again. I can suggest you some therapists if you’d like? I’m sure (y/n) would need one eventually.”
Wriothesley nodded at her, “I would really appreciate that, thank you for lending us your men too, Navia.”
Clearing his throat, Wriothesley went straight to business. "Anything new?"
The two shook their heads.
"The Spina di Rosula managed to track down a handful more men who worked under Arderne,” Neuvilette explained, “but none of them have any useful information. The only other person they seem to think has any information is a guy named Dougier. They say he worked directly under Arderne.”
Wriothesley paused, the name sounds familiar. Wasn’t he…
“He’s part of the Berrett society, wasn’t he?” Aether asked, “Is he still in Meropide?”
Wriothesley frowned. “No. His sentence was over a month ago, right before… Before my fiancée was taken.”
“Hmm… so he’s involved,” Neuvilette took a sip of water out of his fancy glass. Why is it that only Nuevilette can drink plain water that elegantly? “I’m not surprised. After all, the man did have a grudge against you for uncovering his schemes that time, Wriothesley.”
"That explains a lot." Wriothesley mumbled, he unclenched his fists, not realizing when he started feeling that tense.
"We'll need to track down Dougier next then?" Aether asked.
"Yes, I'll dispatch some of my men to ask around my network." Wriothesley answered.
"Spina di Rosula have been scouring the area for him but there were no traces, they reported that it was as if he disappeared." Navia pondered, crossing her legs as both gentlemen looked up at her, "but we all know people don't just disappear into thin air, it's possible we overlooked something. Let's go over the chronological order once again.

(y/n) jolted awake. Another bad dream, she’s safe now, there’s nothing to worry about.
She directed her gaze at the sofa, which was devoid of her husband. Is he still outside? She knew he was investigating her case, so perhaps he’s meeting up with Neuvilette and Navia.
Suddenly she felt nauseous.
Again?
These past few days she kept waking up with nausea, but this was the first time she felt the strong urge to vomit. (y/n) quickly pressed the call button and clumsily stumbled to the toilet using her crutches. She lifted the toilet bowl and emptied the contents of her stomach.
“(y/n)?” She could hear nurse Komaki in her room.
“I’m here.”
The door to the bathroom swung open, and nurse Komaki quickly rushed to her side. She held up (y/n)’s hair as she continued to retch and dry heave into the toilet bowl.
“Did you just wake up before this happened?”
“Yeah.” (y/n) felt tears pricking behind her eyes. She remembered clear as day the things that happened to her in the facility, but part of her refused to accept a specific event that kept recurring.
It can't be… right?
"Uh... Nurse Komaki?" (y/n)’s voice was shaky
"Yes dear?"
(y/n) hesitated. She didn't want to do this but she had to make sure.
“May I… Is it possible to get a pregnancy test?”
Nurse Komaki’s eyes widened, she leaned in closer to her, eyes filled with a mix of sympathy and worry. “Of course dear. No questions asked. I can also arrange to test for any STDs, with your consent of course.”
“T-thank you. I'd need that.” (y/n) sighed in relief, but then straightened up when she remembered her other point.
“And uh… I believe with the doctor and patient confidentiality you can at least do this much… uhh… Please don’t tell Wriothesley about this.”

"There, that's it!" Navia's exclamation turned all eyes on her, "you said you found her unconscious and she was not breathing, but she showed little to no signs of memory loss or brain damage, on top of her vision being taken too."
Wriothesley knew where she was going with this.
"Humans will suffer brain damage if the brain is not supplied with oxygen for over 4 minutes." Navia continued.
"Are you saying… her breathing stopped within four minutes of me arriving at her cell? I didn't see anyone come in or out."
Navia nodded, "that is very likely."
Neuvilette squinted at the maps spread out in front of them. "Then… there's a chance that a hidden passage or room is present in the location where she was found."
Paimon hummed, a bit confused, "What about how she retained her memories even without a vision?"
"For now we don't really have an answer to that," Wriothesley got up, "but I'm sure at least Dougier does."

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐃'𝐒 𝐒𝐈𝐗 ( rockin'roll ! )

"and if you don't love me now, you won't ever love me again."

★ 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐔𝐍𝐁𝐈𝐑𝐃'𝐒 𝐒𝐈𝐗 / the 70's rock band that took teyvat by storm
ISSUE 01. Everyone knows who The Sunbird's Six were. Their songs revited through the nations: tender and ethereal with each poignant verse. Yet, the group of six showed they could sing verses of ardour while thirsting with unrequited rage that tore souls apart in one sitting. Their debut and only album ‘Vermilion’ was hypnotic and utterly divine. It was a mosaic of winsome pieces that were put together to make one gut-wrenching album that you ultimately ugly cry to.
SO WHO WAS THE SUNBIRD'S SIX? Comprised of four founding members from Mondstadt, one from Snezhnaya, and the other from Fontaine, we get a cast of Teyvat's most talented musicians. Specifically, Diluc Ragnvindr as lead guitarist, songwriter and vocalist and ( Name ) St. Laurent as lead vocalist and songwriter. The duo bewitched the throng and perhaps themselves with both their flaming allure and vocals. Youth of the 70's wanted to become ( Name ) with all her charm and freedom while some fans died to get a strand of Diluc's hair alone. The other members include Jean Gunnhildr on keys, Rosaria on drums, Kaeya Alberich as bass guitarist, and 'Childe' as rhythm guitarist.
ISSUE 02. Yet, as The Sunbirds Six became a renowned household and rock name, their disbandment remains unknown- until now.

Kaeya Alberich ( bass guitarist ) : Ha! We were good... too good.
Rosaria ( drummer ) : Back then- things were simpler. You wanted to play? Grab an instrument and fucking play. That was our original motto... until things started getting messy. And by messy I mean Diluc and Childe. Maybe even ( Name ) too. *Sighs* Actually, all of us. But, you can't write an album like 'Vermilion' without going through all that shit.
Jean Gunnhildr ( pianist ) : When the four of us first came together, we were decent. We all loved playing- some more than others- but we were okay! *Smiles slightly* But, if you're going to go beyond the walls of the Ravginder basement- we needed more.
Childe ( rhythm guitarist ) : Do I sit here? *Laughs* Oh okay. When I was invited to join the band- I said, "Okay, my partner will join too." and of course, there was zero objection cause you don't find a musician like ( Name ) anywhere... a small part of me selfishly wishes that she [ ( Name ) ] said no when I asked. *Laughs* But who am I kidding? I'd go through all that again and again... even if it meant dealing with Diluc-
Diluc Ragnvindr ( lead guitarist ) We only needed another vocalist, a female one. So, we found one.
Kaeya : I was the one who told him we needed a female vocalist and I found her and Childe.
Rosaria : Rockin' roll is not serious till you really add whatever emotions ( Name ) had in the mix- and that's exactly what she did.
( Name ) St. Laurent : *Smiles sweetly* It was ugly, so ugly. However, bygones be bygones. It was only rockin' roll.
Diluc : It was not just rockin' roll.
