A little guide on ao3 (by an ao3 user and writer)

Friendly reminder for mobile users! Ao3 is a website. It doesn't have (as far as im concerned) an official app for mobile, so better get comfy with using crome on your phone.

So, what is Ao3 really?

Ao3 is a website made by fans for fans. There are no ads, and all content is free on Ao3. Anyone can post (with some age restrictions) and they can post anything.

How can I browse Ao3?

Ao3 does not require an account to view stories. You can easily browse as an anonymous user. You just are not able to view certain works, as creators have the ability to show their works to registered users only. Some cases, commenting is possible while anonymous, but again, it's up to the creator of the work.

If you want to be a creator and share works, you need an account.

An account also gives you the ability to bookmark works, so you can re-visit them, mark works for later, keeps a history of the works you've visited and allows you to favourite tags.

How do I get an Ao3 account?

When you first open the site, it gives you the option to "Get Invited". An invitation will be sent to your email anywhere from 24hrs later to a week later, depending on the amount of people in the automated queue.

After the invitation, you are able to set up your account like any other social media account. Pick a username, pseuds (name), description and bio. You can have a profile picture as well.

How do I navigate the site?

There are few ways to do so efficiently, but there's countless of ways you can experiment with to find which is more comfortable.

1st option: As the website loads, you can go to the 'Fandoms' tag.

Then, after clicking on it, this column appears. Through there, you can pick which media your fandom is from and from there, browse the huge list of different fandoms until you spot your own.

The list is in alphabetical order, so if your fandom begins with an "C", it shouldn't be too far down.

2nd option: At the top right, under your profile, and the options 'Post' and 'Log Out' should be a white oval search bar.

When searching, there are many ways to work around it.

Personally, I press search as it is. It will lead you to a page where all the fanworks of the site are listed. (i believe its easiest, but always feel free to experiment)

From there, you press the 'Edit Your Search' button, located near the top right.

It will then lead you to a page with multiple fields.

Don't panic when you see all the fields. Only half those are of interest when you want to browse works for a fandom.

The most important ones are those under the Field name 'Work Tags'

Whatever you select under this field will be included in the works the site presents you with.

What are the work tags? What do they do?

Lets go through the options.

Fandom(s): when typing on this option, multiple fandom names will autofill in a list under the white space. If your fandom shows up, you can just click on it.

From there, you can select the fandom you want to see works from. If your fandom doesn't show up, it can mean one of two things:

-there are no works for it

-it isn't popular enough to be picked up by the algorithm

After selecting one fandom, you can select another fandom, or more, to see works that are crossovers over universes.

Ratings: Ratings are selected by author. It defines the level of maturity it has in the work

- General audiences is the tag you want to use when nothing bad happens in the work. No swearing, no sexual activities, no violence or gore. It wont contain scenes that minors are not allowed to see.

- Teen and up audiences is the tag used for most works on the site. It is what would be used when you have mentions of/vague sexual content or violence. Normally, the most extreme stuff on there is excessive swearing, heavy angst and hurt/comfort with no excessive details

- Mature is the tag that is for 18+. It is mostly filled with one of following : Violence, Sexual Content, Ab*se, R@pe, Death and SH.

Reader descretion is advised by looking at the additional tags the author has provided, especially for those with triggers.

- Explicit is like Mature, but contains more graphic content. Works rated explicit mostly fall under the 'Graphic depictions of sexual content', 'Graphic depictions of Violence and Gore' or 'Graphic depictions of Ab*se, R@pe, or Self H*rm

Reader descretion is advised, stronger than mature, since it can be much more triggering. The works are scarily detailed sometimes.

- Not rated: the author has not given this work a rating because none of the other ratings fit the work. Pay special attention to the tags.

Warnings: Also known as Archive warnings by older users. The trigger warnings of Ao3. There are 6 archive warnings:

-Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings: The author didn't use the warnings, either because none of them fit the work's theme and warnings, or to avoid spoiling the story. Pay attention to the tags for any warnings.

-Graphic Depictions Of Violence: It is pretty self explanatory. Can contain any sort of violence, from wars, to simple fights, to ab*se of any kind. Can and often contain death. The type of violence is in the tags.

-Major Character Death: A main character in the story will die in this work. Pay attention to the tags always. The name of the character will be mentioned, as well as the way they die.

-No Archive Warnings Apply: None of the warnings apply. It is most times a perfectly safe work. Check the tags to make sure though!

-R@pe/Non-Con: The work contains non-consensual activities. Ranges from non-consensua sex to non-consensual use and ab*se of substances. Very close attention to the tags!

-Underage: The main character(s) in this work are underage/minors. This is normally tagged along sexual content so be aware and pay close attention to the tags!

Categories: This regards the relationships in the work:

- M/M, or better known as mlm or a relationship between two non-woment (men mostly, can include characters under the non-binary umbrella)

- M/F, a heterosexual relationship (is inclusive of trans characters too!)

- F/F, or wlw, or a relationship between two non-men (women mostly, can include characters under the non-binary umbrella)

- Gen, no sexual or romantic relationships are in this work, or if there are any, they arent of main focus.

- Multi: Polyamorous relationships, or multiple relationships are included in this work (this is also where threesomes+ are tagged in sometimes)

- Other relationships: One of the two people in the relationship is non-human (mostly), or the relationships are platonic/family.

Characters: The characters you want to be included in the story. This works just like the 'Fandom' filter, so the same things apply. You can tag as many characters as desirable.

Relationships: The relationships that you want present in the work. This includes both major and minor relationships. It can also include ended relationships (tagged Past x/y) and implied/referenced relationships. This works just like the Characters and Fandom filter.

Additional Tags: These are things the author has included to give potential readers an insight to the story. 'Angst', 'Fluff' and 'Smut' are additional tags. Works like the Relationships filter, so all same applies.

Is there anything I have to avoid/ I should avoid?

There is this very infamous tag, 'Dead Dove: Do not eat.' This tag is a warining to readers that the things in the work are really messed up, and can include anything illegal in it. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE REST OF THE TAGS IF YOU STILL ARE INTERESTED.

How else can I filter works?

You can choose how they are:

sorted (Titles, Authors, Hits, Kudos, Comments, Bookmarks, and Best Match)

the word count (from 1 word to millions)

the language (most are on there)

the amount of chapters

if the work is complete of not

when it last updated/when was posted

and if there are crossovers.

These are all options that author has to include, and therefore you can sort freely. Most are bulletin options you can click on.

What if I want to find a specific work?

If you happen to know one of these: Author, Title, Fandom or Rating, you will find it. If you were reccomended one, it's better to ask for the author or the title, to make looking for it easier.

Can I find a specific author/ user?

People search is for finding users on the site

Bookmark search helps you look through other people's public bookmarks. Not really used.

Tag search finds works that include this specific tag you searched. Also not used a lot.

People can see my bookmarks?

When bookmarking a work, you are able to do a lot.

if you do not want your bookmarks to be visible to the public, make sure to check off the Private bookmark box at the bottom left.

Common terms thrown around by Ao3 users:

-tags: the additional tags of the work

-kudos: liking a story

-bookmarks: saving/saved stories. makes it easy to revist. you can see your bookmarks from your profile

-hits: the amount of people that have clicked on a story. Isn't necessary they liked it, but they did click on it.

And those are the basics! If you had to take one thing only, its ALWAYS READ TAGS

Annunciazione del Signore

(Is 7, 10-14.8, 10 / Sal 39 / Eb 10, 4-10 / Lc 1, 26-38)

Per entrare nella contemplazione di questa solennità dell’Annunciazione del Signore possiamo lasciarci guidare da un testo del Concilio Vaticano II: <Il Padre delle misericordie ha voluto che l'accettazione da parte della predestinata madre precedesse l'incarnazione, perché così, come una donna aveva contribuito a dare la morte (Gen 3), una donna contribuisse a dare la vita. Ciò vale in modo straordinario della madre di Gesù, la quale ha dato al mondo la vita stessa che tutto rinnova e da Dio è stata arricchita di doni consoni a tanto ufficio. Nessuna meraviglia quindi se presso i santi Padri invalse l'uso di chiamare la madre di Dio la tutta santa e immune da ogni macchia di peccato, quasi plasmata dallo Spirito Santo e resa nuova creatura. Adornata fin dal primo istante della sua concezione dagli splendori di una santità del tutto singolare, la Vergine di Nazareth è salutata dall'angelo dell'annunciazione, che parla per ordine di Dio, quale “piena di grazia” e al celeste messaggero essa risponde “Ecco l'ancella del Signore: si faccia in me secondo la tua parola”. Così Maria, figlia di Adamo, acconsentendo alla parola divina, diventò madre di Gesù, e abbracciando con tutto l'animo, senza che alcun peccato la trattenesse, la volontà divina di salvezza, consacrò totalmente se stessa quale ancella del Signore alla persona e all'opera del Figlio suo, servendo al mistero della redenzione in dipendenza da lui e con lui, con la grazia di Dio onnipotente. Giustamente quindi i santi Padri ritengono che Maria non fu strumento meramente passivo nelle mani di Dio, ma che cooperò alla salvezza dell'uomo con libera fede e obbedienza, divenendo, come dice sant’Ireneo, “con la sua obbedienza causa di salvezza per sé e per tutto il genere umano»”1.

Con l’episodio del colloquium salutis tra Gabriele e la ragazza di Nazaret si rinnova e si radicalizza ogni incontro di vocazione che ha già segnato il cammino dell’umanità e, in modo del tutto particolare, l’esperienza dei profeti del popolo di Israele. Ciò che sta al centro e al cuore di ogni vocazione è l’assoluta libertà del Dio che interpella e la piena libertà di chi è chiamato a coinvolgersi nel piano della salvezza. La reazione di Acaz è una sorta di “vocazione mancata” quasi per paura che questa relazioni lasci un <segno> (Is 7, 10) troppo forte nella propria vita. Agli antipodi della reazione del re, troviamo quella del Verbo che fa del suo <corpo> (Eb 10, 5) pienamente <offerto> (10, 8) il luogo in cui si compie la salvezza a motivo di un coinvolgimento totale di Dio nella nostra stessa umanità. In questo scambio mirabile e pericoloso insieme, Maria è colei che rende possibile l’incontro e il dono attraverso un assenso che permette il coinvolgimento totale della nostra umanità. La risposta, non immediata ma profondamente valutata, di Maria è l’espressione dell’assenso del cuore di una donna libera capace di affidarsi perché profondamente sicura di se stessa: <avvenga per me secondo la tua parola> (Lc 1, 38). Molte volte ci interroghiamo sulla “volontà di Dio” dimenticando talora di esaminarci seriamente sulla nostra libertà!

Quando tu, Signore, poni un angelo sulla nostra via, fa’ che sappiamo rispondere “Eccomi”. Ad ogni chiamata della vita giunga, pronto o faticoso, ma giunga… il nostro “Eccomi”. Maria, tua madre, ci insegna così, a lasciar danzare la nostra libertà al suono divino del tuo Amore che chiede spazio, che chiede di inondare il mondo e la storia e la vita di ciascuno con la forza dirompente di un’Incarnazione che cambia di segno ogni realtà. Per tutte le resistenze che opponiamo ti chiediamo perdono. Kyrie eleison.

Hai trovato grazia presso Dio Quando un uomo trova grazia presso Dio? Quando Dio trova in lui se stesso, il suo bene, il suo amore, la sua verità, la sua giustizia, la sua santità. Dio vede se stesso nell'uomo e vedendosi si ama, amando la persona che lo riflette come uno specchio. Nell'Antico Testamento spesso ricorre questa espressione. Nel Nuovo è detta solo per la Vergine Maria. Solo di Lei si dice che ha trovato grazia presso Dio. Mio signore, se ho trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, non passar oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servo (Gen 18, 3). L'angelo le disse: "Non temere, Maria, perché hai trovato grazia presso Dio (Lc 1, 30). Nella Vergine Maria Dio non trova qualcosa di se stesso, vi trova tutto se stesso nella potenza della grazia, verità, santità, giustizia, pace, comunione. Tutto Dio è tutto in lei. Lei è vero tempio, è il tempio vivente del suo Signore. Il Dio che vive in Lei, che è tutto in Lei, chiede ora una grazia a Colei che Lui ha ricolmato di ogni grazia. Chiede la grazia di essere la Madre del Figlio suo, del suo Figlio eterno. Potrà la Vergine Maria dire di no a Colui del quale è già tempio. Se vuole il suo corpo, il suo corpo è suo. Lei è solo la sua serva fedele. Come Dio già tutto ha occupato della sua anima e del suo spirito, così ora tutto può occupare del suo corpo. Gli è dato tutto per l'eternità. La Vergine Maria è stata pensata dall'eternità da Dio per essere tutta e interamente sua nell'anima, nello spirito, nel corpo. Dio ha preso tutto di Lei cuore e mente, desideri e aspirazioni. Solo la volontà le ha lasciato tutta nelle sue mani, perché fosse Lei a donarsi al suo Dio. Maria ha trovato grazia presso Dio. Ma anche Maria vede tutta se stessa in Dio. Anche Dio trova grazia ai suoi occhi. È in questo essere l'uno nell'altra e l'altra nell'uno, in questo purissimo scambio di vita che Maria si fa dono a Dio per sempre. Lei è da Dio, Lei è in Dio. Ora sceglie di essere per Lui. Si fa la sua serva. Lectio Divina: Matteo 5,38-42

1) Preghiera

O Dio, fortezza di chi spera in te,

ascolta benigno le nostre invocazioni,

e poiché nella nostra debolezza nulla possiamo

senza il tuo aiuto,

soccorrici con la tua grazia,

perché fedeli ai tuoi comandamenti

possiamo piacerti nelle intenzioni e nelle opere.

Per il nostro Signore Gesù Cristo...

2) Lettura

Dal Vangelo secondo Matteo 5,38-42

In quel tempo, Gesù disse ai suoi discepoli: “Avete inteso che fu detto: Occhio per occhio e dente per dente; ma io vi dico di non opporvi al malvagio; anzi se uno ti percuote la guancia destra, tu porgigli anche l’altra; e a chi ti vuol chiamare in giudizio per toglierti la tunica, tu lascia anche il mantello. E se uno ti costringerà a fare un miglio, tu fanne con lui due. Da’ a chi ti domanda e a chi desidera da te un prestito non volgere le spalle”.

3) Riflessione

• Il vangelo di oggi fa parte di una piccola unità letteraria che va da Mt 5,17 fino a Mt 5,48, in cui si descrive come passare dall’antica giustizia dei farisei (Mt 5,20) alla nuova giustizia del Regno di Dio (Mt 5,48). Descrive come salire sulla Montagna delle Beatitudini, da dove Gesù annunciò la nuova Legge dell’Amore. Il grande desiderio dei farisei era vivere nella giustizia, essere giusti dinanzi a Dio. E questo è anche il desiderio di tutti noi. Giusto è colui o colei che riesce a vivere dove Dio vuole che viva. I farisei si sforzavano di raggiungere la giustizia mediante la stretta osservanza della Legge. Pensavano che con il loro sforzo potevano arrivare a stare dove Dio li voleva. Gesù prende posizione nei confronti di questa pratica e annuncia la nuova giustizia che deve superare la giustizia dei farisei (Mt 5,20). Nel vangelo di oggi stiamo giungendo quasi alla cima della montagna. Manca poco. La cima è descritta in una frase: “Siate perfetti come il vostro Padre celestiale è perfetto” (Mt 5,48), che mediteremo nel vangelo di domani. Vediamo da vicino questo ultimo grado che ci manca per giungere alla cima della montagna, di cui San Giovanni della Croce dice: “Qui regnano il silenzio e l’amore”.

• Matteo 5,38: Occhio per occhio, dente per dente. Gesù cita un testo dell’Antica legge dicendo: "Avete inteso che è stato detto: Occhio per occhio, dente per dente!” Abbreviò il testo, perché il testo intero diceva: ”Vita per vita, occhio per occhio, dente per dente, piede per piede, bruciatura per bruciatura, ferita per ferita, colpo per colpo” (Es 21,23-25). Come nei casi precedenti, anche qui Gesù fa una rilettura completamente nuova. Il principio “occhio per occhio, dente per dente” si trovava alla radice dell’interpretazione che gli scribi facevano della legge. Questo principio deve essere sovvertito, perché perverte e distrugge il rapporto tra le persone e con Dio.

• Matteo 5,39ª: Non restituire il male con il male. Gesù afferma esattamente il contrario: “Ma io vi dico di non opporvi al malvagio”. Dinanzi a una violenza ricevuta, la nostra reazione naturale è pagare l’altro con la stessa moneta. La vendetta chiede “occhio per occhio, dente per dente”. Gesù chiede di restituire il male non con il male, ma con il bene. Perché se non sappiamo superare la violenza ricevuta, la spirale di violenza occuperà tutto e non sapremo più cosa fare. Lamech diceva: “Ho ucciso un uomo per una mia scalfittura e un ragazzo per un mio livido. Sette volte sarà vendicato Caino, ma Lamech settantasette" (Gen 4,24). E fu proprio per questa terribile vendetta che tutto è finito nella confusione della Torre di Babele (Gen 11,1-9). Fedele all’insegnamento di Gesù, Paolo scrive nella lettera ai Romani: “Non rendete a nessuno male per male; la vostra preoccupazione sia fare il bene a tutti gli uomini. Non lasciarti vincere dal male, ma vinci il male con il bene" (Rom 12,17-21). Per poter avere questo atteggiamento è necessario avere molta fede nella possibilità di recupero che ha l’essere umano. Come fare questo in pratica? Gesù offre quattro esempi concreti.

• Matteo 5,39b-42: I quattro esempi per superare la spirale di violenza. Gesù dice: “anzi (a) se uno ti percuote la guancia destra, tu porgigli anche l’altra; (b) e a chi ti vuol chiamare in giudizio per toglierti la tunica, tu lascia anche il mantello. (d) E se uno ti costringerà a fare un miglio, tu fanne con lui due. (e) Dà a chi ti domanda e a chi desidera da te un prestito non volgere le spalle”. (Mt 5,40-42). Come capire queste quattro affermazioni? Gesù stesso ci offre un aiuto per aiutarci a capirle. Quando il soldato gli colpì la guancia, lui non gli porse l’altra. Anzi, reagì con energia: "Se ho parlato male, dimostrami dove è il male, ma se ho parlato bene, perché mi percuoti?” (Gv 18,23). Gesù non insegna ad essere passivi. San Paolo crede che ripagando il male con il bene “tu ammasserai carboni ardenti sul capo dell’altro” (Rm 12,20). Questa fede nella possibilità di recupero dell’essere umano è possibile solo partendo dalla radice che nasce dalla gratuità totale dell’amore creatore che Dio ci mostra nella vita e negli atteggiamenti di Gesù.

4) Per un confronto personale

• Hai sentito dentro di te qualche volta una rabbia così grande da voler applicare la vendetta “occhio per occhio, dente per dente”? Cosa hai fatto per superarla?

• La convivenza comunitaria oggi nella Chiesa favorisce in noi l’amore creatore che Gesù suggerisce nel vangelo di oggi?

5) Preghiera finale

Porgi l’orecchio, Signore, alle mie parole:

intendi il mio lamento.

Ascolta la voce del mio grido, o mio re e mio Dio,

perché ti prego, Signore. (Sal 5)
