this is also just one of my favorite Sburb mechanics, I love the concept of basically deciding the abilities and aesthetics of the NPCs via prototyping, it’s such a cool little thing and opens up a lot of possibility for any fan-sessions.

I went on this entire shpeel about the potential of writing an isolationist John based off of willy nilly prose narration at the beginning but MAN do the early versions of the kids not give a SHIT about what’s going on.

this is a very weird moment that sticks out when looking at the comic as a whole because the weight of literally all life dying at once is nonexistent, but at the same time, this is fucking hilarious.

it makes think about a lot of rewrites I’ve seen where they try, emphasis on try, to give the fact that world ends more emotional relevance, and they basically kinda force this by introducing random background characters who are obviously going to die immediately.

How common is it for school feeders to hook up with people they taught/are teaching? We see a couple of students making moves so it doesn't seem taboo, but outside of gamzee getting with kurloz I don't think we've ever seen anyones advances come to fruition

I mean, it's a question of numbers really lol.

In romance as with a lot of things in troll/highblood society I tend to roll with "you can do whatever you want if you're willing to gamble you might die". There's mention made in-comic about the concept of "serendipity", which fanon often extrapolates into a societal concept of basically soulmates--which I find very fun as a facet of this aggressive, hardcore society. The archetypal troll murders without compunction, lives and dies for the empire, and also has multiple destined soulmates, haha.

ANYWAY all this to say that if there's some amount of spark there, then a lot of trolls as I write them are like "well damn, I guess we should go for it" and disregard other factors. Because what else are you going to do, spit in the face of serendipity? The feeders are powerful, socially valued, and necessarily pretty badass, so they get a lot of hopefuls of all ages hanging around hoping there's going to be a spark. Despite lots of attempts, though, there's not a lot of powerful church elders floating around and some of them are already quadranted to each other. I'd imagine it's pretty rare that one of their remaining quadrants gets snapped up by somebody significantly their junior.

Especially since several people in the fic have made mention of people trying to get quadrants with more powerful/older trolls as a means to climb the social ladder--both from Travye cautioning Kurloz, and also from the opposite side of Bastil trying to see if she could hook up with Karkat to do what (she thinks) Gamzee is doing, and increase her own importance by strongarming her way into somebody's quadrants. How much of that thought process is "serendipity is bullshit, I want to get mine" and how much is "this is what I want and I have convinced myself to hate/pity them" and how much is "I'm going to get more power, and then eventually when I'm established I'll find my REAL kismesis" presumably varies greatly troll to troll.

TBH through the lens of serendipity I feel like relationships with differentials in reputation, blood color, etc etc, would be retroactively more scandalous if you then broke up with the person! If you stick together, then what were you supposed to do? That was your moirail! But if you broke up then like Oof, Fam. Guess it wasn't real and also like why would you hook up with a teal anyway. Should've known. U_U I could have told you it wouldn't work out except if it turned out it was meant to be I would have been in the wrong, so I didn't tell you until you were broken up.

Mandarin the Darmanitan: Pokémon Black. He and Janice the Scrafty were the Route 4 Power Couple of the team, but you'll meet Janice if/when I ever draw my Dark type gymsona.

Zazzy the Salazzle: Pokémon Moon. Absolute powerhouse, swept the shit out of the grass trial.

Jack Swellow the Swellow: Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. Embarrassingly, he wasn't initially named after Jack Sparrow. His name at first was just Jack, after the person I was compulsory-heterosexuality crushing hard on in middle school. When my cousin asked me for the origin of the nickname, I told her it was after Jack Sparrow, but Jack Swellow was too many characters. She immediately pointed out that it was just the right amount of characters, so I took him to the Name Rater and made the change then and there.

Alba the Noctowl: Pokémon Platinum. I like to think she's a lesbian and had a big crush on Antoinette, my Empoleon. They were very sweet with each other, in sharp contrast to Voltron the Luxray (in the inevitable Electric team) and Boneless the Gliscor (in the Flying team), who were toxic yaoi before I had ever considered the phrase "toxic yaoi".

Ursaring: Pokémon X. He had no nickname because I got him from Wonder Trade. I think if I did nickname him, I would've called him something really stupid, because I was 10. I'm tempted to say Freddy, but I don't think FNaF came out until after I had beaten X. Either way, he was kind of a beast. Did super well against Wikstrom with his Fighting moves.

Dunsparce: Pokémon Y. This guy actually did have a nickname, but I don't remember what it was. I actually played Pokémon Y with the language set to French to study for my French final in my junior year, and I beat it super quickly. Therefore, I don't remember a lot of my team members' names. There was a Nidoking who you'll see in the Ground team named Roi, but everyone else is evading me. Shockingly powerful, I ran paraflinch strats with Serene Grace, Glare, and Headbutt.

Gamzee the Obstagoon: Pokémon Shield. Don't look at the nickname. He was in a polyamorous relationship with Baby the Toxtricity (on the Poison team) and Sasha the Inteleon (who you won't see because I didn't include any starters on this list). He filled a similar role to Ursaring, having Fighting type moves for good coverage. For some reason, Sword and Shield are super good games to have a Fighting type in. Alas, I didn't have a Fighting type in those games, so that was Gamzee's job.

Snuggles the Frosmoth: Pokémon Shield. When I saw the leaks, I knew I had to use a Snom/Frosmoth. I didn't care how long it took to find one, I didn't care about the blatant 4x weaknesses, but I had to use it. She was super solid into Marnie's team when Whippy Cream the Alcremie (on the Fairy team) didn't quite cut it!

Hi! If there was a Homestuck Addams Family Au, who would be Gomez and Morticia?

Kurloz and Meulin: They seem to love each other enough, and they have the morbid aesthetic down. Opens the door to have Nepeta and Gamzee as Wednesday and Pugsley. I think it works.

Aradia and Dave: They both love dead things, and I personally think Aradia is the closest to Morticia in Homestuck. This implies Dirk as Wednesday, though, which feels very cursed. Lil Cal takes the place of Thing.

Mom Lalonde and Dad Egbert: These two are so underrated as a ship. Seriously. They could have loved each other so much. And then it leaves room for Rose as Wednesday and John as Pugsley, which is basically already them. Kanaya would still be a vampire, and Rose would love it. Unlike the others, this leaves no room for lil Cal, which is a blessing or curse depending on your perspective.

Chahut and Marvus: Probably the closest match total, plus Barzum and Baizli as the twins. I'd put Karako here, too, as a relative. I can't really imagine them doting on each other enough to be Gomez and Morticia, though.

Rose and Kanaya: Listen they just work. They're already goth and in love. Not sure about Wednesday, but Karkat Junior is right there. Rose filling the house with secret passages, Kanaya designing floaty black dresses. Both communing with horrorterrors. Dave loves visiting. Karkat wants to leave the house as soon as he crosses the threshold.

Step Three: Take the list, fuse the combinations into one troll. First troll in fusion dictates dream moon and aspect, second troll dictates the class and gender. Blood color is done in order the combinations are given.

Step Four: Profit? 

So that was basically the backstory of where these little guys came from and what inspired them. I’ve been unusually productive today. Maybe it’s because I have some new video essays to watch. Anyway, here are the troll fusions: 

Equius and Feferi: A very girly troll who also happens to really like mechanical work

Kanaya and Tavros: Junior astronomer with a very low opinion on himself, but finds hope and comfort in the vastness of the universe. Do you like his bedazzled space themed hoodie?

Aradia and Vriska: A gloomy goth gold blood with a fondness for ghosts while being unable to get along with the living

Feferi and kanaya: A lonesome troll who spends most of her time with her plants. She’s not scared of being found out and culled, she believes it to be an inevitability, and has nerves of steel.

Terezi and Gamzee: Absolute trash man gremlin who is unfortunately very good at manipulating people, even people who hate him, and coming up with schemes. Causes trouble for no reason at all other than he’s bored. 

Gamzee and Nepeta: A lazy, troublemaking troll who definitely should not be trusted around grubs. Keeps skipping out on her duties to hang out with friends outside of the cloister. Possibly into weed.

The year I watched this was either 2013 or 2014, and POSSIBLY late 2012 but I’m leaning on 2013. I don’t know when the video was published, but definitely not any earlier than 2011 and absolutely not any later than 2014. The dates are good for filtering out search results, but I still haven’t had any luck. I can’t remember it it was a comic or an animatic, but basically, it was THIS scene from The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (the audio is the same), with Eridan as Nergal Jr. and Feferi as the girl.

Okay, so as said in my nostalgia post part 1, exact date unknown, I got introduced to Homestuck via a wolf roleplay chatroom website by a Gamzee roleplayer sometime in 2012 (it was very popular to model your animal OC directly after an existing character from non-animal media). Following this, I did a little “research”, which turned into a lot and SO IT BEGINS. At first, I mainly only looked at fanart, fanfiction, and I’d make attempts at reading the actual webcomic, but it was a struggle because 1.) strict parent and family computer being out in the open, 2.) Homestuck was not yet made accessible on mobile. The dubs on YouTube didn’t get me very far, and I actually ended up reading most of Homestuck at a friend’s house LOL.

What DID work on my crappy model 3G iPhone, however, was YOUTUBE!!!! I watched ALL the comic dubs and ALL the animations. Simply obsessed. I remember some of Octopimp’s videos being only a year old or less at the time. One of the first I watched, before I REALLY got sucked into the fandom, was the one described above. I coincidently really really liked GAOBAM and Junior was my favorite character. Considering he and Eridan are kind of adjacent in several aspects, so naturally it took me no time at all to point and go “yes, That One. I like that one. That one is mine.” <3

There were some significant pockets of western animation fandom around this time, so I also coming from there. Nice little deviantart communites, some uh, much more controversial and often not so nice. This was around the time when Bleedman was a household name. Yeah… Wild times indeed. If you weren’t around for it, I can’t even begin to describe what fandom was like when the internet was a far more lawless “Wild West” domain. Some aspects I miss, some I certainly don’t. 🗿

I’m totally getting off topic now, but I guess this post is about to count as nostalgia post 1.5 before the second one. WHICH I’LL MAKE SOON, I just need to find some pictures. 👍

Harry Anderson loves Heathers the musical and this is amazing

But! Just imagine: Vriskas the musical, directed by Harry Anderson Egbert

In the moment when Heathers in the original musical appear at the first time, in this version Vriska comes first, because she is Huge Bitch just like Heather Chandler, then comes Vrissy, cause she’s like SpiderBitch the junior and at last - Tavros Crocker.

In the last scene in song “Beautiful” when Veronica appears with Heathers everything just the same but Veronica is dead Gamzee. What? Don’t look at me like this.

Well. Vriska, Vrissy and Tavros come to the stage. The choir sings: “Vriska, Vriska, Tavros and Dead One. Ooooh. Vriska, Vriska, Tavros and the Dead.”

And the Harry Anderson appears in the stage. He screams: “Gamzee?” like Martha screamed “Veronica”. The choir shocked. Jane Crocker sends her drones to this bloody school. Curtains fall.

And of course, Candy Store scene, my favorite. Everything the same but Vriska singing “Candy epilogue” expect “Candy store”. Yeah, like that.

And next thing. God damn Les Misérables.

Just imagine troll revolutioners as les amis de l’abc. Like Rose is Enjolras, Kanaya is Combeferre, maybe Karkat is Grantaire, Meenah is Courfeyrac.
