Hey, how many canon T1 diabetic characters do you know about?

I kinda wanted to challenge myself to make a character in art everyday with visual equitment, symbols maybe, and anything else I can think of.

Blue Broen from The Truth According to Blue by Eve Yohalem, a middle grade adventure novel. (I'm only a few pages in but T1D seems well done.)

Brian (and Rufus) from Rufus Comes Home by Kim Gosselin, a children's book featuring Rufus the Diabetic Bear! (I still have mine on a shelf--along with Ruby! Although I renamed her Rosetta :P put pods on 'em and everything.)

Cassie Salazar from Purple Hearts, a 2022 Netflix Original AND a romance novel by Tess Wakefield (which I have NOT read). Specified as T1D.

Hansel (played by Jeremy Renner) from the movie Hansel & Gretel: Witchhunters. He has an inaccurate, anachronistic form of diabetes referred to as ‘sugar sickness’ but it’s one of my favorite movies. Besides, the movie also has an automatic machine arrow-gun. Realistic it is not. Fun monster movie, it is. I want to write a medical fix-it fic SO bad but I don't know when.

Mackenzie Nolan from Let Me List the Ways by Sarah White, a YA contemporary romance. Specified as T1D.

Sal Vidon from Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez, a Rick Riordan presents novel. Specified as T1D.

I've seen similar things to what that anon said too. There's no ending to them. I too remember sb mentioning that Levi was intending to threaten Zeke with his grandparents (two innocent people) as well as Gabi & Falco in the forest to make him feel just as bad as he did when Zeke killed Erwin & the rest of his comrades. Aside from the fact he was testing Zeke's humanity to see if he had a speck of guilt about what he did, I'm interested to know if you think he was threatening him too as these ppl claim? To tell thee truth, I've always kind of felt conflicted by Levi's words about the grabdparents+Gabi&Falco in those two scenes too given the fact he cares about human lives. We know how much the dude values innocent lives (Gabi is no saint of course but she's still a child). It could just be me so I'm really interested in your analysis regarding this. Levi is bluffing. Levi does this a lot. Like when he was threatening Annie, trying to get her to come out of her titan, or when he tells Erwin he's going to break his legs, etc... Levi uses threats of violence all the time without any, real intention of following through on them. That people don't get this about his character is mind boggling to me. It's like they're incapable of reading between the lines of anything. If things aren't explicitly stated for them, they don't pick up on it at all, which just shows a low level of reading comprehension.

When Levi threatens Zeke's grandparents, he's reminding Zeke of how his own, traitorous actions are going to have devastating consequences for the two people who raised him. Once the Marleyan government figures out that Zeke betrayed them, its his grandparents who are going to be the first to pay the price. Levi was pressing Zeke on this to see if he cared at all that he'd imperiled the lives of two people he should, by all logic, care deeply about. But of course, Zeke didn't respond at all other than to make a joke about it. Such a caring guy.

Again, with Gabi and Falco, Levi was testing Zeke to see if he had any genuine concern in him for others. He tells him Gabi and Falco's safety depends on his own actions, essentially telling Zeke that if he's lying to them, and is planning on betraying them, then it's going to be those two who end up paying the price, which isn't wrong. The higher ups wouldn't have hesitated for a second, I don't think, to kill Gabi and Falco if Zeke gave them any reason to. I don't think Levi would ever do that, but the top brass of Paradis wouldn't have any problem. Levi is once again trying to remind Zeke that if he's messing with them, if he's lying, if he's planning on doing anything stupid, then it's other who will pay the price. He's trying to see if there's anything that will appeal to Zeke's "humanity". But once again, even knowing Gabi and Falco are likely going to be endangered, and possibly even killed for his betrayal, Zeke goes right on ahead and enacts his deranged plan. Again, he never cared about anyone but himself. That's further proven when Zeke turns Falco into a titan, killing his older brother in the blast, and then using Falco as a weapon against Reiner.

So yeah, people can take their "but Zeke's HUMANITY" BS, and their accusations against Levi, and shove it. They're wrong.

First of all, how are you and your family? And the babies? 🧡😘

I have a question. I don't mean to be rude and I really hope it doesn't come off that way, but I was wondering how your posts got deleted. Like, I understand that your entire blog was deleted, but I don't understand how all of your master posts were taken down. Normally when a Tumblr user creates a master post and it gets tons of reblogs (like yours) the people who reblog it are suppose to still have your masterpost on their blog right? So how come ALL of the reblogs don't exist anymore?

Also, I have another question if you don't mind. Have you left the (larrie) fandom? If so, do you think you will ever come back? And do you think you will ever get your blog back? (I hope, this is not rude because I know and I have seen through the many many many years how hard you have worked on your @tellmethisisnotlove blog and how much love you spread. I genuinely hope you'll get it back soon😊)

Hi there! My blog as one of the oldie documentary survivors from 2014 - has taken a huge role in converting newbies or even ants to larries (not my word). I had a comprehensive tagging system and due to that it took me seconds to find the posts I’m meaning to. I cannot answer why it was shut down. Or a year later why it got deleted - reblogs and all. I do have some theories - read my intro (fuck Sony cough).

What do you mean by leaving? By not believing in these 2 lovebirds? Then no I never left. By not following their careers? Then no I never left. By believing they’re suddenly straight? Then I defo never left. By believing they broke up? Nope. By believing they were never together? Lol definitely haven’t left.

If you mean coming online several times a day then yes there is a decline, I’m not as active as I used to be. Having a hard time why to make an effort of even creating the shortest content when even if I don’t hurt anyone, somewhere at tumblr HQ people can still wipe it all by pushing a button.. i used to be known by my good memory, by being a documentarian.. and I’m not anymore.. it’s just, floating. Priya Krishna, Rick Martinez, and Sohla El-Waylly announced that they are officially ending their video appearances. Since then Molly Baz, Gaby Melian, Carla Lalli Music, and Amiel Stanek have joined them.

Ryan Walker-Hartshorn and Jesse Sparks, the only two Black editorial staff members remaining at Bon Appétit, have now also left.

The Proskauer Rose investigation is complete. Alex Delany and Matt Hunziker have both returned from suspension.

The above article details the events from May 31st, 2020 to June 14th, 2020. It is pretty comprehensive, except it doesn’t mention that Alex Delaney was actually suspended. This was unconfirmed for a while but we have the confirmation here. 

Condé Nast has suspended a Bon Appétit video editor amid an internal investigation

The next big event was Matt Hunziker’s suspension. He was suspended explicitly for negative tweets about how Condé Nast/Bon Appétit was handling the situation (evidenced in this post). Some of the test kitchen crew voiced their support for him at this revelation, but then were promptly shut down as revealed a month or so later (August 3rd, 2020). This is probably also why the test kitchen seems to have been avoiding discussing it since. It was announced in a memo sent on August 7th, 2020, that he is no longer suspended.

This is a Business Insider article that was locked behind a paywall, so is now on google docs. It sheds light on months of silence, and demonstrates how Condé Nast/Bon Appétit continues to fail the people of color that they employ. As a result, Priya Krishna, Rick Martinez, and Sohla El-Waylly have left (August 6, 2020).

How has Bon Appétit reacted to this? How is Bon Appétit changing?

These are Bon Appétit’s public statements. There have also been a number of administrative changes, including Adam Rapoport’s resignation (June 8th, 2020), Oren Katzeff’s demotion from president of Condé Nast Entertainment (July 31st, 2020), and Sonia Chopra’s introduction as Executive Editor (August 6th, 2020). 

In June Proskauer Rose (notorious for union-busting) began to conduct an investigation into inequity at Bon Appétit. Unsurprisingly, in a memo sent on August 7th, 2020, global HR officer Stan Duncan revealed that Proskauer Rose had “not uncovered evidence that race played a factor in setting compensation for any video team members.” In the same memo it’s revealed that since the investigation is over, both Alex Delany and Matt Hunziker are expected to return from suspension. Here is Alex Delany’s statement regarding his suspension (posted August 10th, 2020).

According to Priya Krishna, now former test kitchen personality, their claims to work on diversity, inclusion, and equitable pay are “all lip service” (August 6th, 2020).

What I tend to post here is backed by news articles or directly from the staff involved; these two have real connections in Bon Appétit that I don’t. So sometimes the sources for them are “I’ve been told by a BA/CNE staffer”, and it’s up to you whether you decide to trust that or not.

When will videos come back?

In a memo written global HR officer Stan Duncan, sent Friday, August 7th, 2020, the plan is “for BA video production to begin in September with some returning talent, in addition to new contributors which we’ll be announcing in the coming week”. The “coming week” would refer to the week of August 9th through August 15th. 

Has anyone left?

The above article was at one point free, but for some asinine reason got moved to premium, so it’s a google doc now. It details exactly how they were lowballed in contract negotiations. 

A day after these three announced that they are leaving, Molly Baz and Gaby Melian joined them (August 7th, 2020). Carla Lalli Music announced that she’s also asked to be released from her video contract days later (August 12th, 2020). Amiel Stanek made a similar statement about asking to leave his video contract about a week after the first three left (August 15th, 2020).

Gaby is going to remain test kitchen manager (as said in her personal statement). Priya, Sohla, Molly, and Carla will definitely continue with the editorial side in some capacity (as evidenced by Rachel Premack’s articles and both Molly and Carla’s personal statements). Rick might be! The same author says different things across two articles; in one, he’s severing ties. In the other, he’s continuing to freelance.

How the Quarantine Affected Me

Hi there, reader slash blog visitor! We’re down to the last week of November and soon, it’ll be the Holiday season. I recently celebrated my birthday and I’ve seen people flock to malls. But as much as I delight in seeing ~some things~ go back to normal, it also bothers me how people seem to have forgotten that there is STILL a pandemic. Don’t get me wrong– I still want to celebrate Christmas, but in a safe manner. It also makes me anxious that people will be too comfortable “going out” as soon as the holiday rush sets in. How will Christmas in the #NewNormal be celebrated?

For today’s entry, (as seen in the title) I’ll be talking about how the quarantine affected me. I wanted to write this entry weeks ago, but I don’t think I’m in the right headspace to do so. So yeah, in this entry I’ll be listing down some of the changes that I have observed in me ever since the quarantine started more than 8 months ago. It’s so unlikely for the majority to be stuck at home and far from the old way of living that we all had. What’s even more saddening is that we don’t know when this will all end. *shrugs*

As soon as WHO declared ‘it’ as a global pandemic, classes in the local areas were initially suspended. I had a bad feeling about it and so I took home all of my teaching resources and started working on the quarterly exams and final grades. Eventually, the school year prematurely ended without a formal culmination – no graduation, year-end event, etc. The summer (which did not seem like an actual summer) began soon after and the quarantine protocols became stricter and stricter. It led to the temporary closure of establishments, loss of jobs, and sadly, the increase in the number of cases.

With that being said, let me give you my list of the changes this 9-month long quarantine has brought me.

The Quarantine Made Me Socially, Morally, and Politically Aware.

During the years prior, I had this constant discomfort with bad governance and ill-conceived policies. Once a law or a public servant steps over one or any of my values, I would feel the need to express my opinions but I would also be too afraid to stand up for it as some people may tell me that I’m too young to get involved. But now that I’m an adult and a teacher by profession, I feel the need to speak up – not only for me, but also for those who can’t speak for themselves. Furthermore, if I can amplify their voices and use my platform to raise awareness, I will.

I’ve been constantly disheartened by the things that happened while we were under a strict quarantine– workers lost jobs, people got arrested, businesses shut down, and frontliners got sick. It’s plain to see that the pandemic response of the country was derailed from the get go, and you can tell it by the lack of massive testing, insufficient contact tracing, and faulty protocols. Now, here we are– still stuck in our homes and the risk of getting sick is still there. The situation could have been better had we employed preventive measures– flight bans, medical solutions, and isolation among others. The elected officials owe the public a competent leadership and comprehensive plans.

The Quarantine Made Me Check My Privileges

Yes, you read it right! Talking about privileges, I, for one, did not come from an affluent background, but I have always had my needs in check– tuition fees, new clothes from time to time, 3 or more full meals per day, and a quite comfortable home. I may not have all the things I want, but I’m definitely privileged compared to other Filipinos who suffered severely since the lockdown started. I acknowledge that fact, so as soon as donation drives surfaced, I started donating small amounts to certain causes. If I can spend money on shopping and pricey drinks, I definitely have the money to support those who are in need.

With the recent typhoons that hit the country, I became very vocal on social media about how I support relief operations and donation drives. I may not be personally there to help, but I know I can still provide assistance from afar. Despite my efforts to support these causes, this does not mean that I did not experience financial difficulties during the ECQ. Just like what I said, the school year prematurely ended in March, but I believe we were supposed to work until the first week of April. I know that my struggle is nothing compared to what other people experienced, and that’s the reason why I’m using my privilege for good.

The Quarantine Made Me Process My Emotions and Assess My Mental Health

If you’re someone from my circle, you would know that I’m an escapist. I hate facing problems, addressing my emotions, and dealing with confrontations. It does not mean that I’m in denial of the problem, it’s just that I despise addressing them because what’s the point? People care but not enough to apologize or change the behavior that hurt me in the first place. Or at least that’s how I used to think. The quarantine helped me process my emotions and I went through some of the deepest scars that I used to cover up. It was liberating, but emotionally exhausting as well.

I’m still an escapist, but I use escaping for better reasons this time. I use it as a thinking time, a processing period for me to realize where I went wrong and how I want to solve situations. I have gotten over my “what if’s” and “could have been’s” over the lockdown. I’ve made peace with my past, and I’m currently dealing with what’s in front of me– my present demons. I needed that release, and the quarantine gave me sooo much time to do it. I must say that I’m handling things better, and even if I escape the situation, I come back with a definite solution in mind.

TikTok? I don’t know her. HAHA! Let’s go to something light and quite positive this time. I know there have been A LOT of trends that came up when everyone was stuck at home, and I’m quite horrified by the things that people can do out of boredom. Oh well, most of friends have succumbed to the craze. Then, there’s me– the one untouched. HAHA! I just decided I’m too old to dance in front of my phone, take a video of myself, and share it on that app. Can I just say how hard I cringe at myself in videos? Ugh. #nevertried lol

The Quarantine Made Me Rest and Take a Break from the Old Normal Lifestyle

Quite frankly, I used to splurge a lot on food during the old normal, which I still do, but now it’s in moderation. Aside from that, I shopped regularly and buy unnecessary things to compensate for the times when I felt like I lacked in material things. Isn’t it so unhealthy? But how was I supposed to know at that time, when I was working so hard day and night, and the only thing that validates my hard work is when I see my hard earned money go somewhere? In this case, it goes into food and shopping items. *insert my friends’ constant advice for me to stop spending*

Looking at it now, the way I used to “live” was so unsustainable. A friend used to say, “You never know when the next economic crisis it going to happen.” And it just did, right at the start of the new decade that we were all looking forward to. It made me realize how valuable money is, and that it should be in places where it will grow in quantity and in value. But here I am, once again, circling back to the old lifestyle. I guess it’s me searching for a sense of normalcy and validation as I’ve been working from home for the past 4 months. All I can say this time is “send help.” *note sarcasm*

So there, this is where the list ends… for now. We’re still stuck in quarantine so I guess the list will go on until we fully win against this pandemic. I’ve been so busy lately that I didn’t even realize how near Christmas is. Well, the rush is slowly setting in, and the guidelines for the Christmas celebration for this year was already released a couple of days ago. Let me remind you to stay safe and vigilant all the time. Practice social distancing as much as you can and stay at home unless it’s for essential business. I know we are all craving for the usual Christmas celebrations like Simbang Gabi, Christmas carols, and parties.

But trust me, we’ll all have that when this is all over. For now, we’ll have to celebrate in the #NewNormal way. We may not be rejoicing in the same manner, but the reason to make merry is still the same. This may not be a good year for some, but there is something good and something to be thankful for if look enough to find them. Or actually, we don’t have to look elsewhere. The mere fact that we are still here, thriving despite being under challenging situations, is enough to be thankful for. Advance merry Christmas everyone and don’t forget to wear a mask!

Hello. I've just discovered your blog and it's so great! Also the post about Nanaba was so comprehensive and thoughtful. It read like a scholarly article and it got me thinking about Gabi and her fate. What is your impression of her and her role in the story?

Wow, thank you so much for the kind compliments! I really hope that Gabi doesn’t get a similar fate/backstory; it’d honestly be nice to get a female character in this series who comes from a more positive background, but… Well…

Gabi’s an interesting character. She’s a kid, probably about 12ish years old. She has some kind of an important relationship to Falco that seems at once to be both one-sided and mutual. She seems to care about Reiner, too. And she is really, really pumped for being a titan and doing her people proud and…it’s sad in a way that the SnK main cast isn’t. Most of the characters have clearly been knocked down a peg or two in this series; even the veteran characters, whom we know next to nothing about, have probably have their expectations ground into dust before the main storyline starts; it’s just that we don’t get to see it happen. Their world is dangerous. Things are not always what they seem. And words like loyalty and bravery aren’t so easily defined when you’re faced with some of the choices these soldiers have to make. I think this is true of some of the warrior children, too, Falco in particular. He’s probably one of the fandom’s favorites for this reason. He seems like he’s grounded in the reality of their world as we understand it. He knows shifters die after 13 years. He wants to protect Gabi (for reasons we don’t understand but the sentiment still strikes us as familiar) and he’s not at all oblivious to the price that will be paid for it–not just that he has to put his own life on the life, but also that Gabi will resent him for it…or maybe it’s more that she will be hurt and feel betrayed if he gets it instead.

Anyway, Zophia and Udo are…basically not even characters as far as I’m concerned. Galliard and Pieck have been around all of thirty seconds and feel more solid to me–especially Galliard. It’s clear to me that Galliard and Pieck have some idea of their situation and…know that it’s bigger than they are. Zophia and Udo strike me as cardboard cutouts that exist to fill space and make us think there’s actual competition for these titan forms. They don’t matter to me even an ounce at this point.

Colt is kind of…meh so far. I think it’s possible he thinks he and Gabi are alike? At least when it comes to loyalty and fighting the good fight. But I see him as more ignorant than she is. (He strikes me as more ignorant than Falco right now, too, though I could be proven wrong.) Gabi’s pumped up about being a titan and fighting in the war herself but that could be a farce; either way, she was willing to put herself on the line for a strategy that was a gamble. Gabi’s good with practical application. Yeah, it could have backfired in a big way, but they have little left to lose this late in the war. It’s kinda irritating that a 12-year-old was the only one with an idea and guts to risk it all to win it. 

Colt seems to appreciate this about her but I wonder if he’s applying some kind of blind-loyalty lens to how he views her. I found his attitude on the train to be pretty interesting–and Gabi’s, too. I’m honestly not sure what’s going through her head there, but I think it might be that she feels fear in hindsight and now Colt is hyping her up into a kind of figure she won’t be able to live up to. She’s 12, not a goddess of war.

That said, I felt that the praise was having an effect on her. That the cheering of the men who feel their lives were saved by her interference or grace or whatever–that this means something to her. Maybe even moves her or eases her conscience/guilt a little bit?

It makes me wonder what she’s fighting for. If it’s all brainwashing or something more. I wonder that about Falco and Cold, too, but…what I really want to know about Gabi is where she comes from and why she’s here.

The sad thing is…that I don’t want more female characters with sad pasts but I don’t know how there isn’t a sad past in this series for an Eldian girl who is only 12 and has been in a program designed to make her a warrior since she was, what, 8? What kinds of parents give up their kids to this program? How many of them are in some way like Grisha, using their children? To get better housing/food? For safety just for themselves? 

Isn’t it possible, though, that Gabi doesn’t want this titan for herself? That she wants it for a reason bigger than winning a war? She’s hinted at wanting to save her people, but isn’t it just as possible she wants this titan form because it is the only way her family (perhaps younger siblings too) will get good health care and food? Good housing and education? 

I mean, I know this fandom loves coming down hard on spirited female characters, but boy could Gabi’s origin story be good. She’s been brainwashed into believing that Paradis is full of evil Eldians, but I’d feel a lot for her as a character if we found out that behind her passion is a desire to make things better/more tolerable for her family. Maybe she, too, knows she’ll only live 13 years afterward, and knows that Reiner only has a short time left, himself, but she’s willing to do that for them–so that they’ll have a better life. And maybe, if she does a really good job in the war, that better life will keep on after she dies.

I mean so far in this series we’ve seen a lot of noble goals but they’re all kind of…well… big. In a way, they’re impersonal. Hange wants everybody to feel safe. Eren wants to attain freedom for humanity. Armin wants to see the ocean. Connie wanted to prove himself. Marlowe wanted to change the world.

So far we haven’t really had a character who was fighting directly for their family. Like oh, sure, they’ll fight for their family in an overarching way: by attaining freedom for humanity. But we haven’t had a more direct connection, where the benefit would be immediately felt. I think that would make a really compelling history for a character like Gabi, who seems so thoroughly ignorant about the reality of war…but might very well be a great actor doing what she knows has to be done to ensure her family’s future.

Port Moody, British Columbia is located about 20.4kms which is about a forty minutes drive from downtown Vancouver. Tucked between inter-cities Burnaby & Coquitlam, British Columbia,  Port Moody is considered the smallest city within the Metro Vancouver area!  It has become a welcome haven for visitors & locals alike from the hectic bustle of the surrounding metropolis with its scenic waterfront & mountain views. During the summers, it definitely comes alive with live music, festivals, outdoor patios, food trucks, boating, & so much more!

      1.History. Originally, the land was home to the Squamish and Musqueam bands of the Coast Salish people, however, during the early 1800’s the Pacific coast was slowly colonized by the British through The Hudson Bay Company fur trade. Both the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush (1857) & the Cariboo Gold Rush (1858) brought many men from American territories. This influenced Queen Victoria’s decision to dispatch British Major-General Richard Moody, BC’s first Lieutenant-Governor in 1859, with the mission of reinforcing British control & establishing New Westminster, the colony’s first capital city, located by the Fraser River.

Additionally, Queen Victoria also sent Royal Engineers of the British Army to clear a trail, later known as the North Road, from Burrard Inlet at Port Moody to New Westminster in order to provide easy military access against any possible American invasion.

But it wasn’t until 1886 that Port Moody quickly expanded into a city after The Canadian Pacific Railway Company completed the transcontinental railway line linking Montreal, Quebec to Port Moody, British Columbia. This brought settlers to the West & in 1913 Port Moody was officially named a city.

Today, visitors can visit The Port Moody Station Museum near Rocky Point Park to learn more about the Railway’s historical significance in the city’s development!

Political poetry as a crime: Inside the surreal trial of Dareen Tatour

Arresting a Palestinian for publishing a political poem is extraordinary. Having to prove at trial that police mistranslated her poem is nothing short of surreal.

It has been nearly a year and a half since Palestinian poet Dareen Tatour was arrested in her home in northern Israel for writing a poem. She spent three months in various prisons, including half a year under house arrest in the town of Kiryat Ono in central Israel. Although she was able to return to her home village of Reineh, she remains under house arrest as the trial comes to an end.

Tatour, 34, was arrested by Israeli police on October 10th, 2015 for a poem she had published on Facebook, along with a number of other Facebook statuses she posted at the height of last wave of violence between Palestinians and Israelis between 2015-2016. She was charged with incitement to violence and identifying with a terrorist organization — all because of her poem.

The main clause of her indictment was based on a poem that she had allegedly posted on YouTube under the title: “Qawem ya sha’abi, qawemhum” (Resist my people, resist them). Another main clause in the indictment relates to a news item, cited in a post on Tatour’s Facebook page, according to which “The Islamic Jihad movement calls for continuing the Intifada all over the [West] Bank…” The same post calls for a “comprehensive intifada.”

The prosecution wrapped up its arguments in September of last year, most of which were designed to prove that Tatour’s Facebook account indeed belonged to her, and that it was she who published the poem and the two Facebook statuses.

In November, Tatour testified and admitted that she had written the statuses. She explained that she was protesting the occupation, denouncing the crimes committed against Palestinians by the Israeli army and the settlers, adding that the police translation distorted her texts. Over three long days of cross-examination, Tatour was grilled by Prosecuting Attorney Alina Hardak, who attempted to push Tatour to admit her “support for terrorism” — to no avail.

Should poets be arrested?

On Sunday, March 19th, Tatour’s attorneys, Gaby Lasky and Nery Ramati, brought two expert witnesses to testify before Judge Adi Bambiliya-Einstein in the Nazareth Magistrates Court.

The first witness was Prof. Nissim Calderon, an expert on Hebrew literature. In his written expert opinion, Calderon stated that there are special rules concerning the expression of poets, describing a long tradition of poets who used harsh words to oppose oppression or injustice — sometimes going so far as to clearly call for violent actions. The poets, Calderon said, were not prosecuted, even by oppressive regimes like the Tsar in Russia or the British Mandate in Palestine.

To prove his point, Calderon chose three of the most prominent Hebrew poets, bringing specific examples from their subversive texts. He cited Hayim Nachman Bialik, one of the pioneers of modern Hebrew poetry, who once wrote the lines: “With furious cruelty / We will drink your blood mercilessly.” Calderon also cited poet Shaul Tchernichovsky, who wrote: “Give me my sword, I won’t return it to its scabbard / What did my lips elicit? I want battles.” Despite these clear calls for violence by leading Jewish poets, the Tsar’s anti-Semitic secret police refrained from arresting or prosecuting them.

The third example Calderon cited at length was right-wing Zionist poet, Uri Tsvi Greenberg. Greenberg openly incited to violence and was a member of “Brit HaBirionim” (The Thugs Alliance), a Zionist organization that violently resisted the British occupation. He was never punished for his poems.

When the prosecutor implied that Greenberg was not arrested for his poetry because the British Mandate did not prosecute inciters, Calderon responded that his uncle was exiled from Palestine for supporting illegal Jewish immigration. When the prosecutor suggested that poets should not necessarily be immune to legal action during times of tension, Calderon said that the British did not prosecute Greenberg even when he called for resistance to their rule.

What did the poet mean?

Both the prosecutor and the judge understood that they have a problem with the police translation of Tatour’s poem. The officer who translated it had no specific expertise in translation. When he was previously asked during his testimony why he was chosen to translate the poem, the officer responded that he studied Arabic literature in high school and has a love for the language.

During Tatour’s testimony, the prosecutor wanted her to provide her own Hebrew translation of the poem. She refused, adding that she does not know Hebrew well enough to translate poetry. The prosecutor then wanted her to read the poem in Arabic so that the court’s translator will translate it, and thus the words would be attributed to her included in the protocol. She refused.

Perhaps the prosecution felt some relief when the defense brought its own Hebrew translation of the poem, done by Dr. Yoni Mendel, an experienced literary translator and Arabic expert. His translation was significantly different from the one that appeared in the indictment. Mendel, too, provided expert testimony, claiming that the police’s translation had deliberately and systematically distorted the text to make it appear extremist and violent.

The most blatant contradiction between the two translations was in the following lines: “Do not fear the tongues of the Merkava tank \ The truth in your heart is stronger \ As long as you are rebel in a land \ That has lived through raids but wasn’t exhausted.” The last two verses were translated by the policeman to “As long as you resist in a land \ Long live the Gazawat and will not tire.”

The police officer omitted the word “Gazawat” in Arabic, likely because he could not find the proper translation into Hebrew. In his testimony, Mendel explained that the word was used by Arab tribes at the time of the Jahiliyya (what Muslims call the period before the founding of Islam) to describe attacks on tribes for the purpose of robbery or enslaving women. Tatour’s text clearly uses these lines to refer to the raids that Palestinians are subject to; the police translation, somehow, managed to transform the victim into the aggressor.

Who are the martyrs?

On a more profound level, much of the emphasis on the translation — and a great deal of the cross-examination — focused on the sentence: “Follow the convoy of martyrs.” The Arabic word for martyrs, “shuhadaa,” was not translated into Hebrew by the police translator, but rather was grammatically adjusted into Hebrew and became “shahidim” — an Israeli transliteration that, for most Israelis, conjures an image of Palestinians who were killed while carrying out attacks on Israelis. Mendel showed how basic Arabic terms keep their original form in such a way that neutralizes their original meaning and the basic human empathy that underlies them. Divorced from their original context, Arabic words like shahid or intifada acquire a new, threatening meaning in Hebrew.

Mendel went on to explain that for the Palestinian Arab public, the word shuhadaa refers to all the victims of the occupation. In the specific context of Tatour’s poem, Mendel supported this interpretation with the fact that Tatour’s poem referred to three specific martyrs: 16-year-old Muhammad Abu Khdeir, who was kidnapped and burned alive by Israeli Jews; Ali Dawabsheh, a Palestinian baby who was burned alive with the rest of his family in their West Bank home; and Hadeel Al-Hashlamon, who was shot and killed by the army at a checkpoint in Hebron.

The prosecutor tried to prove that Tartour was not referring to murdered Palestinians, since no one wants to be murdered. Mendel explained that the call to “follow the martyrs” does not mean a desire to die, but rather refers to a more general concept of adhering to Palestinian heritage. This includes embracing bereaved families, never giving up the struggle, and refusing to accept solutions that deny Palestinian national and human rights.

Tatour has became a symbol for Israel’s persecution of Palestinians over political expression, mostly on social media. Many poets, writers, intellectuals, and activists, both in the country and abroad, have expressed their solidarity with her, calling for her immediate release and for the charges against her to be dropped.

The fact that leading intellectuals such as Calderon and Mendel volunteered to provide testimony during a grueling cross-examination (Mendel was grilled for five hours) is a prime example of just how much this particular trial resonated with much of the liberal public. Even defenders of freedom of expression and the arts have begun collecting money to help with Tatour’s legal expenses.

The last witnesses in Tatour’s case will be called to testify on March 28th, which will likely the last hearing before the verdict is read in a few months. Tatour faces up to eight years in prison, and an appeal from one or both sides is likely in such a high profile case. In the meantime, Tatour remains under house arrest and may stay in detention for a full two years before the court comes to a decision over the meaning of her poem.

Expert: The truth of corporate journalism, and the great irony of its obsession with ‘fake news’, is that it is itself utterly fake. What could be more obviously fake than the idea that Truth can be sold by billionaire-owned media dependent on billionaire-owned advertisers for maximised profit? The ‘mainstream’ worldview is anything but – it is extreme, weird, a product of corporate conformity and deference to power. As Norman Mailer observed: There is an odour to any Press Headquarters that is unmistakeable… The unavoidable smell of flesh burning quietly and slowly in the service of a machine.1 A prime example of ‘mainstream’ extremism is the way the UK’s illegal wars destroying whole countries are not an issue for corporate moralists. Physicians for Global Responsibility estimate that 1.3 million people have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan alone. And yet it is simply understood that UK wars will not be a theme during general elections (See here and here). By contrast, other kinds of ‘inappropriate behaviour’ are subject to intense scrutiny. Consider the recent resignation of Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and his replacement by Prime Minister Theresa May’s Chief Whip, Gavin Williamson. Fallon resigned after it was revealed that he had ‘repeatedly touched the broadcaster Julia Hartley-Brewer’s knee at a dinner in 2002’. Fallon was damaged further by revelations that he had lunged at journalist Jane Merrick: This was not a farewell peck on the cheek, but a direct lunge at my lips. The Commons leader Andrea Leadsom also disclosed that she had complained about ‘lewd remarks’ Fallon had made to her. Sexual harassment is a serious issue, despite the scoffing of some male commentators. In the Mail on Sunday, Peter Hitchens shamefully dismissed women’s complaints as mere ‘squawking’. But it is strange indeed that, while harassment is rightly deemed a resigning offence, other ‘inappropriate behaviour’ leaves ‘mainstream’ commentators completely unmoved. Fallon voted for both the 2003 war that destroyed Iraq and the 2011 war that wrecked Libya. He voted for war on Syria. He voted for replacing the Trident nuclear missile system. Earlier this year, he even declared that Britain would be willing to launch a nuclear first strike. After he was made Secretary of Defence in July 2014, Fallon oversaw the supply of weapons to Saudi Arabia waging war on Yemen. Two years later, Campaign Against Arms Trade reported that UK sales to Saudi Arabia since the start of the war included £2.2 billion of aircraft, helicopters and drones, £1.1 billion of missiles, bombs and grenades, and nearly half a million pounds’ worth of tanks and other armoured vehicles. British sales of military equipment to the kingdom topped £1.1bn in the first half of this year alone. In December 2016, Fallon admitted that internationally banned cluster munitions supplied by the UK had been used in Saudi Arabia’s bombing campaign. Six months earlier, Amnesty International had reported that British-made cluster bombs were being used in attacks on civilians that had claimed the lives of children. For none of these horrors did Fallon resign. So what kind of conflict are these weapons fuelling? The Guardian reports this week: Yemen is in the grip of the world’s worst cholera outbreak and 7 million people are already on the brink of famine. In July, Reliefweb reported: The scale of the food crisis in conflict-ridden Yemen is staggering with 17 million people – two thirds of the population – severely food insecure and seven million of these on the verge of famine. Director-General of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, José Graziano da Silva, has described Yemen as the UN’s ‘largest humanitarian crisis today’, noting that conflict and violence have disrupted agriculture, with violence intensifying in areas most short of food. In December 2016, a study by UNICEF, the UN children’s agency, found that at least one child was dying in Yemen every 10 minutes. The agency found that, since 2014, there had been a 200 per cent increase in children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, with almost half a million affected. Nearly 2.2 million children were in need of urgent care. This week, the Saudi-led coalition declared it would close Yemen’s borders to prevent an alleged flow of weapons from Iran, after it intercepted a missile attack by Houthi rebels near Riyadh, the Saudi capital. Johan Mooij, Yemen director of Care International, commented: For the last two days, nothing has got in or out of the country. Fuel prices have gone up by 50% and there are queues at the gas stations. People fear no more fuel will come into Hodeidah port. He added: People depend on the humanitarian aid and part of the cholera issue [is] that they do not eat and are not strong enough to deal with unclean water. There have been ‘daily airstrikes in Sana’a,’ Mooij said, adding: ‘People fear the situation is escalating.’ On Monday, the UN’s World Food Program said that, out of Yemen’s entire population of 28 million people, about 20 million, ‘do not know where they’re going to get their next meal’. These are Fallon’s millions, May’s millions, the ‘mainstream’s’ millions. In the Independent, Mary Dejevsky made the only mention of Yemen in an article discussing Fallon’s resignation that we have seen in the national corporate press: In the Middle East [on Fallon’s watch], the UK made great efforts to maintain its alliance with Saudi Arabia – and the arms sales that went with it – playing down the desperate plight of Yemen which was a by-product of this policy. Mass death, Iraq and Libya destroyed, millions of lives torn apart, profiteering in the billions from the torture of an impoverished, famine-stricken nation – none of this was deemed worthy even of mention in considering the record of Fallon and his ‘inappropriate behaviour’. As for his replacement, the Guardian‘s Andrew Sparrow tweeted a link to his blog piece titled: ’10 things you might not know about Gavin Williamson’. Vital facts included news that the new Defence Secretary ‘kept a pet tarantula called Cronus on his desk’, ‘likes hedgehogs’, ‘is only 41’, and ‘went to a comprehensive school’. Sparrow was adhering to the journalistic convention that parliamentary politics should be depicted as a light-hearted, Wodehousian farce. It is all a bit of a laugh – everybody means well. Despite Williamson’s lethal new role, the word ‘war’ was not mentioned. Preoccupied with spiders and hedgehogs, Sparrow found no space to mention that Williamson ‘almost always voted for use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas’. He voted for war in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq. He voted against the Yemen motion put before the House of Commons in October 2016 that merely called on the Government to suspend its support for the Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces in Yemen until it had been determined whether they had been responsible for war crimes. The motion was defeated by 283 votes to 193, telling us everything we need to know about the ‘mainstream’s’ much-loved myth that British policy is motivated by a ‘responsibility to protect’. The BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg tweeted a link to the BBC’s own comedy profile, which also discussed the tarantula and other nonsense, and made no mention of Williamson’s record on war. We asked Kuenssberg: Will you be asking him if he has any regrets on voting against the Yemen motion to suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia, given the vast civilian crisis? We received no reply. The extreme cognitive dissonance guiding ‘mainstream’ moral outrage was again highlighted by the Guardian columnist Gaby Hinsliff, who tweeted: Can’t help thinking that now would be quite a good time for the first ever female defence secretary, really We asked: What difference would it make to the civilians dying under our bombs in Yemen and Syria? Isn’t that the key issue on “defence”? Hinsliff did not reply. In this post, I’d like to make an argument about a way to understand how the Democratic party seems to be making messaging and policy decisions. An argument like this can’t be made in a vacuum—or in 1,500 words. Nor can any one or even ten reasons be decided upon for why the leaders of a party do what they do. But I recognize a pattern in how the DNC and leadership has acted over the past decade and I want to work that through here. So please forgive any indication that I am not a policy wonk or political analyst—I do not claim to be, nor do I wish to be either.

In my series on the history of the Quantified Self and eugenics earlier this year, I referenced the Belgian astronomer, Adolphe Quetelet, who argued that man could be measured just like the positions of planets. I didn’t have the space to explain it very well back then, but think about it like this: you and, say, 570 of your closest friends have telescopes. At the same time on the same night, you each measure the position of a certain star in the sky. You all come up with roughly the same position, but with distinct and consistent variation. Take those measurements and plot them along a chart, like this:

The numbers of measurements that fall into position A (14 friends got this measurement), B (21), C (41), etc. is counted and plotted. The astronomer’s error law, normal distribution, and Gaussian density function (which are all the same thing) dictate that these values will fall into the normal bell curve. Most of the measurements (217) fell at position E, which means that your friends who got other measurements were probably wrong. So let’s say that the star you’re measuring is, in fact, at position E.

Now, let’s assume that instead of 571 people taking the same measurement, it’s just you but you’re measuring the height of 571 people. Quetelet would argue (in fact, he did just this in 1842) that the heights of these people (he would call them men…because they were) would fall into the same normal distribution. And, just like position E on the above graph revealed the “real” position of the star, position E on our height graph would reveal the “real” height of a man. After compiling a good number of measurements about this man, he labeled him l’homme moyen, the average man.

Remember that this was all happening in the mid-1800s in France and Belgium, a time during which the French monarchy was under upheaval. In 1830, Charles X was forced to abdicate after the July Revolution, and so his cousin, Louis Philippe, became king. Louis Philippe (whose daughter was married to Leopold I, king of Quetelet’s home nation Belgium) operated under “a juste milieu, in an equal distance from the excesses of popular power and the abuses of royal power” (Antonetti 1994, p 713). Quetelet, often quoting Victor Cousin and the philosopher’s ideal of moderation and compromise, was quite taken by this idea of juste milieu and equally enthusiastic about the application of the astronomer’s law as an instrument of social analysis: that there is a common type of man and that, just like the “real” position of the planet or the “real” height of man, that type is found somewhere in the middle of the bell curve. Per Ted Porter (1988), “L’home moyen, then, was not just a mathematical abstraction, but a moral ideal” (103). Quetelet believed that income inequality could be tied to crime rates, that the rich lived longer because they did not drink as much, and that moderate men tempered their passion and helped regulate birth and death rates. By smoothing out the curves that described man, oscillations of the social body were eliminated and an ideal existence could be achieved.

What, then, does this have to do with the Democratic Party? It is a relatively well-known history that the Dems (that is, DNC-sanctioned campaigns for legislative and executive offices) have been basing much of their decisions on a sophisticated data operation. As Daniel Kreiss described last February on this blog, starting after the failed 2004 presidential election, the DNC began to build and amass a sophisticated database of constituent and voter information. In The Audacity to Win, 2008 Obama campaign manager David Plouffe elucidates how critical projects like the DNC’s (and the campaign’s own data and media programs1) helped the campaign understand which issues voters wanted to hear about, what geographic areas to focus on—down to the precinct level, and which ads to run when. Reportedly, the 2016 Clinton campaign leaned too heavily on their data, eschewing opportunities to campaign in what would eventually prove to be critical markets…like all of Wisconsin.

Obama won on a centrist platform of compromise, one that led to increased civil freedoms like the right to marry, but his tenure as president also saw large banks and corporations make exponential gains thanks to a largely hands-off approach to post-bailout repercussions. And while the ACA is an extremely critical step in the right direction, it is a far cry from a single-payer healthcare system. On the other hand, the Republican party has enjoyed control of both houses of congress ever since 2010 and conservative extremism has taken hold of all three branches of government after Clinton’s centrist platform could neither carry her, nor her down-ticket colleagues to office. Meanwhile, in England, we’ve observed an oscillation from one extreme—Thatcherism—to the other—Corbyn-inspired Socialism. What might have been considered the “mainstream” Labour party two years ago failed miserably, running on, yes, another centrist platform—even with the help of Obama’s 2008 and 2012 strategy, data, and media team.

Francis Galton, you may remember from the first installment of my eugenics series, took Quetelet’s work and shifted it—literally. Rather than seeking to find the normal man and make him the model, the father of eugenics wanted to work against what he considered to be a “reversion to mediocrity.” So he promoted the reproduction of those on the exceptional edge of the bell curve and…gently suggested that those on the “deficient” end not reproduce. Of course, this suggestion manifested itself in forced sterilization programs that lasted well into the 1970s in the United States. The idea, of course, was that by removing the deficient and growing the exceptional, the entire curve is forced to move to the right—to the highest IQs, longest legs, fastest reaction times.

Let’s, for the sake of argument, go ahead and call the Republican party Galtonian. Sure, the AHCA, the travel ban, the removal of LGBT identity from the census, and all of the other appalling policies in place or being put in place have eugenicist characteristics. But for now, I want to argue that the Republican party has been using an edge case messaging strategy: war with the terrorists on our soil is imminent, so keep them out and arm yourselves; you might get rich, so let’s reduce the top-earners’ taxes; your marriage will be ruined by someone else’s decisions; women get abortions for fun and your daughter is next. Meanwhile, the Democrats want to reach across the aisle and find a happy medium. They want to incorporate the insurance companies’ wishes into the ACA. Bankers are people, too. We’ll never get single-payer or free college tuition or comprehensive gun control done because the “average American voter” doesn’t want it.

I don’t get to see the data that DNC or GOP operatives have. Nor do I believe one side won or lost solely on the quality or quantity of its data. I have some idea, albeit nascent, why the Democrats refuse to come down hard for social programs that are primarily beneficial for the populous over the corporations (hint: Republican candidates aren’t the only rich ones out there). But I do know that the July Monarchy of Louis Philipe only lasted 18 years, during which he survived seven assassination attempts. It’s time to push towards the other end of the bell curve—to shift the message to a polarized edge case: single-payer is the only just system, free education will lift everyone, top earners owe more to society than vice versa and should pay their share, guns do kill people. If the Democratic party wants to continue to let the data dictate the policy, they will never move beyond a juste milieu. They will point to l’homme moyen and say, “this is our target.” The problem is that target is moving and unless they take control, then thanks to a general apathy surrounding and rejection of their candidates, it will continue to move to the right.
