Dear Beloved,
We have a shared love for Pennsylvania, whether it be for the mountains that are on the edge of the Appalachian or the underground music scene that continues to influence and evolve the music that we love. I like to imagine that we're flying down the suburbs of your hometown while listening to this song. The windows are rolled all the way down to let in what is left of the warm summer air before the sun completely sets in the horizon. The sky will be the perfect shade of red-orange and the clouds will look like broad dry brush strokes. You'll be smiling as you gaze off in to the line where the sky meets the asphalt while the dotted road lines blur together, and I'll be leaning my head out the window like a wild dog.

Gaadge — Somewhere Down Below (Crafted Sounds)
Tumblr media
Somewhere Down Below by Gaadge
Gaadge has the Swirlies’ trick of slipping slight, vulnerable wobbles of melody in a surging onslaught of guitar noise, so that you grab onto the song part as you submerge, gloriously, in overwhelming, overdriven textures of sound. This third full-length from the Pittsburgh four piece buries catchy pop in distortion-swollen currents, the noise and the hook living right next to each other, ready to fight.
The band has two guitarists. Mitch Delong, who also sings and writes most of the songs, strums and slashes while Andy Yadeski elicits the MBV-ish howl and drone. The drummer Ethan Oliva hits hard as he can go, arms ricocheting to chest level as he knocks out chaotic beats. The bass, played by Nick Boston, spills out in a viscous sludge of noise and dissonance; if you get pulled under, it’s the bass that will catch you by the feet and suck you down into the murk.
“Komarov” lets the roar prevail, its drifting choruses socked in by feedback surges and a continuous earthquake of drums. It’s over fast — in 1:44 to be exact — but leaves a crater in its wake. “Strok” which follows just after is, by contrast, nearly jangle pop, its keening melody punctuated but not swamped by stinging strums.  The best, most elegant stab at pop comes in “Don’t Go There,” with its sly, shout-out melody and ornately twining guitars; you’ll hear a bit of Guided by Voices, a bit of Honey Radar in its quick hit of tunefulness. There’s an element of shoegaze in Gaadge’s rainbow arcing noise, too, best heard on “Mundy’s Highlight,” which will give you a flash of Swervedriver in its sweet, lyrical chaos.
You could draw all sorts of lines to the Ovlov family of bands (Stove, Pet Fox, actual Ovlov), in the way the music buoys while the noise takes on a physical, body-moving presence. When we listen to rock music, we want to be moved, but we also want to be obliterated, and Gaadge does both very well.

Gaadge
Somewhere Down Below
====
Pittsburgh indie band / shoegaze that I found on PK. For a 10 year group. The chords are really primitive, basic, uninspiring and boring. The vocals put you in a nice spot, but other than that it doesn't do much for me.

2023 Favorite Singles https://www.zoocoup.org/2023/music/singles.html
A few notes:
The A Giant Dog record was simply the one record I not only listened to a lot but also the one that would constantly earworm itself into my brain randomly, so I didn't see how I couldn't place it at the top of the list. I've loved the past few A Giant Dog records, but I still don't know how I like something that has so much theater kid energy.
Esther Rose, Yazmin Lacey, Glyders, This is the Kit, The Tubs, Andrew Gabbard, Stress Positions, Lael Neal, Miss Grit, CHERISE, Chief Adjuah, Bruxa Maria, Cel Ray, Cerbère, Dead Sea Apes, Dream Version, Gueersh, Hairband, La Culpa and Uni Boys were entirely new to me
I've liked several Mitski songs in the past, but this was the first full record I felt compelled to buy
The last three songs of the Bully record are undefeated
PACKS was a band I found on accident a few years ago — their first record was included in a shipping mixup — and I continue to be impressed with them
In my head I argue The Armed is basically Steely Dan for the 21st century
Girl Ray's first record was one of my favorite records of 2017, but I skipped the follow up. Pleasantly surprised to see how much I enjoyed this latest release
I played the three EPs I called out more than some records this year
I wish julie would release a proper record
Happy to see Bosque Brown and Las Nubes return with something new after a few years away
