The AM: July 31, 2023
Tumblr media
Back on the air after three weeks away—and many thanks to Tyra and Adam for manning the boards in my absence. An alternately ambient and jazzy first hour, a throwback to 1970s Italian library music, and a dreamy, mostly electronic-leaning third hour to wrap up July on a soothing note. I enjoyed listening to it, here's hoping you do, too.
Listen on Soundcloud (without the BBC News, which was especially bleak today)

Wub-Fur Undercover  Vol. 2: The Old Songs
Maybe the old songs’ll bring back the old times Maybe the old lines will sound new…
– “The Old Songs” (Kaye / Pomeranz)
Another Eclectic Assortment of Cool Cover Versions
Everybody loves cover songs! (Don’t they?) We dug deep into the Wub-Fur music library to find some more of our all time favorites and assembled this eclectic assortment of 19 cool cover versions of songs originally performed by The Beatles, Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, The Kinks, X, The Gun Club, The White Stripes, Iggy Pop, The Go-Go’s, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, Belle & Sebastian, The Monkees, Teenage Fanclub, Galaxie 500, Modest Mouse and Ultravox. Featuring contributions from Redd Kross, The Coathangers, Meatbodies, Shonen Knife, Nada Surf, Sun Kil Moon, Veronica Falls, Eddie Current Suppression Ring, and 11 more bands that sometimes like to record cover versions of songs by other bands.
Apologies to David Pomeranz & Buddy Kaye, who wrote the song, and our cover model, Barry Manilow, who did not (Barry was not harmed in the making of this mix).

Shabason, Krgovich & Harris — Philadelphia (Idee Fixe Records)
Tumblr media
Philadelphia by Shabason, Krgovich & Harris
Philadelphia, the first recording from the trio of Joseph Shabason, Nicholas Krgovich and Chris Harris, gleans tendencies from different spheres of close ensemble music. Extracting the sensual, slow-moving movements of the Blue Nile or Talk Talk, lifting and updating the mild crooner feel from those outfits, and finding inspiration from the tonal make-up and continuously fermenting state of fourth world, ambient, and new age music, particularly Japanese new age, Philadelphia has its own highly relaxing character. It is a hazy and misty record, delightfully ambiguous to an extent, pulled together by meandering but highly competent playing tied down by small grooves, at times reminiscent of Sandro Perri.
Shabason, with a few solo records under his belt, is probably most known for his contributions to Destroyer’s Kaputt; he’s developed a Hassel-like trumpet type of playing, leaning into the wild brass of the trumpet and a slew of effects and the aftermath they cull, which might be most dynamic on his album Aytche. Krgovich, who provides vocals here and has collaborated heavily with Phil Elverum, and Harris, guitarist and fellow member of P:ANO with Krgovich, control the ambient temperature of each piece, keeping the overall feel from boiling over.
The lyrics paint a calm, mild domestic setting, that feel familiar and comforting and sometimes humorously on the nose; its literalness shakes off any impulse to interpret an overtly ambitious poetic intent, allowing its words to sink a little deeper. “Osouji” talks about making a bed with a “heavy duvet” and taking a shower before bed, and other tracks pull together other non-sequiturs and plain objects, like the “upstairs neighbor cat,” a “vape pen,”  or a “basketball.” The vocals are willingly sensitive and instinctively expressive, casually slipping up octaves and softly accenting melodies, but they never demand your complete attention.
The three developed a free playing atmosphere in Shabason’s Toronto studios with an understanding that anything goes. Krgovich recently detailed the implicit trust between the three, encouraging any idea which might come up between them, grounds for spontaneity and flexible playing. Philadelphia captures nearly conversational ideas and compassionate reactions, and because of its open-air nature, provides a window into the shades of intent and feeling in natural impulses.

recommended digital releases, december 8th
a large majority of the music i listen to these days is done at work through a premium spotify subscription. the hardest part seems to be trying to remember when an album i’ve been anticipating finally comes out on whatever random friday.
i figure i’m not the only one so every friday i’m aiming to post five new releases from the past week (or so) as well as five recent releases from the past couple months that are available through spotify (and presumably the other streaming platforms).
new releases from the past week (or so):
belle and sebastian "how to solve our human problems, part one" ep on matador [spotify] this is the first of three belle and sebastian EPs planned for this winter. the approach lets them take a more casual and scattershot approach where they recorded in scotland on their own schedule rather than working up an entire album at once in a studio. it opens with a jangly stevie/stuart duet before stuart drops the electronic dance floor number 'we were beautiful'. there's one more synth pop number typical of late-era belle and sebastian with a sarah martin ballad squeeze in-between (just like those old isobel songs). the ep wraps up with a funky psychedelic instrumental that i assume will appear again with words on one of the other EPs.
elva "tailwind" ep on where it's at is where you are [spotify, bandcamp] elva features elizabeth morris in her first project since allo, darlin' broke up last year along with members of the norwegian indie pop band making marks. "tailwind" is a quiet acoustic pop song led by elizabeth with some light percussion. "dreaming with our feet" is underpinned by a mellow guitar riff lifted from yo la tengo and features one of the making marks fellas on lead (elizabeth sings backing vocals).
ella fitzgerald "ella at zardi's" on verve [spotify] recorded back in 1956, "ella at zardi's" is quite possibly the earliest live album in her catalog (the other early ones i remember are all from 1958-1961). it features lots of standards from stage and screen and surprisingly little from her cole porter or rodgers & hammerstein songbooks that were major releases for her at the time.
flying saucer attack "in search of spaces (expanded)" on vhf [spotify, bandcamp] "in search of spaces" was originally issued in 1996 as a single fifty minute psychedelic excursion compiled by bruce russell from a cache of live audience recordings. for the reissues it's been broken up over three sides of vinyl with an extra ten minutes of music added back in. the fourth side features an entirely new mix from the 1994 tapes by jim o'rourke.
nicholas krgovich "in an open field" on tin angel [spotify, bandcamp] nicholas krgovich was behind tons of indie pop groups in the early aughts- i was always on the lookout for a new release from p:ano, no kids, to bad catholics and gigi. since his first solo album four years ago he's explored a quiter breed of introspective indie pop with some of the textures of soft rock and r&b.
slightly older stuff:
robbie basho "live in forlì, italy 1982" on obsolete [spotify, bandcamp] robbie basho was recording and releasing fingerpicked acoustic guitar music alongside john fahey on takoma records back in the sixties. he may not draw the name-recognition of fahey these days but he is just as influential to today's musicians like six organs of admittance, daniel bachman and glenn jones.
heart beach "haircut" (self-released) [spotify, bandcamp] the third heart beach album was recorded in canada at hotel2tango where they captured a huge drum sound and sharp stabbing guitar for their patient post-punk. probably not coincidentally, the album was recorded by howard bilerman who played drums for the arcade fire on 'funeral'.
joe mcphee, pascal niggenkemper and ståle liavik solberg "imaginary numbers" on clean feed [spotify] imaginary numbers are a new sax, bass and drums trio featuring three folks that have never recorded together in any combination. the three improvisations flow between quiet drones, free screech, percussive passages and melodic moments.
ramones "rocket to russia (40th anniversary deluxe edition)" on rhino [spotify] the third ramones album get a remaster for its fortieth anniversary deluxe edition. it also features a full tracking mix of the album as well as rough/alternate mixes and a live album recorded in scotland. aside from the absolute classic album itself full of some of their biggest songs i just find myself floored by these live ramones releases every time.
v/a "jesus rocked the jukebox- small group black gospel, 1951-1965" on craft [spotify] this compilation assembles about two hours of sacred music that was influential during the birth of secular doo wop, rock and soul. a handful of these performers would cross over (sam cooke, the staples singers) but many more remained committed to jesus and (unfortunately) obscurity.

P:ano, "Lazy, Light, And Ugly"

Audio
現在はソロで活躍中のNicholas Krgovichが一員として活動していたカナダはバンクーバーのIndie pop/Chamber popバンドP:ano
1999年から2008年までの活動で4枚のアルバムをリリースしていて、中でも自分が好きなのは1st「When it's Dark and it's summer」と2nd「The Den」の2枚。 「When it's Dark and it's summer」はピアノを中心として様々なアコースティック楽器が優しい旋律を奏でる、美して控えめな作品。
THE DEN by P:ANO
「The Den」は更に音の広がりと深みが増し、繊細な男女ヴォーカルが加わってアルバム全体が暖かく輝きに満ちた、非の打ち所のない完璧な作品です。
THE DEN by P:ANO
以降のアルバムはNicholas Krgovichのソロ作品に通じるキャッチーでポップな作品となっていて素敵なのですが、上記の二枚が持つスローで豊かな美しさが自分は大好きです。
