Random cat fur mutations (and other info) I feel could be REALLY, REALLY good inspiration for people who want it!
1, Cats can have absolutely GORGEOUS fur mutations! Ones I always use as reference when I make feline-inspired original creatures! (Also, these are real mutations btw, though these are not ALL of them! As Tumblr won't let me share more than 10 pics ofc lol)
--The King Cheetah-- a cheetah born with it's spotted pattern conjoined together; making these beautiful 3 stripes down it's back and unique splotch patterns!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
--The Spotless Cheetah-- a newer descovery... Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure it's only been seen once, like, ever. It's called a Spotless Cheetah, but what's interesting is that it still has a speckled spotty pattern despite being “spotless”; Just MUCH different to a regular cheetah! I'm ginuinely really interested on what could have possibly caused this honestly!
Tumblr media
--The Maned Lioness-- Lionesses' born with too much testosterone. They are more aggressive and can, funnily enough, unintentionally trick rival males into thinking there's more males to protect a pride.
Tumblr media
--The Black Tiger-- Tigers born with too much melanin; resulting in these tigers having an absolutely GORGEOUS striped pattern! It can also extend to White Tigers too (even though White Tigers are purely man-made to clarify)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
--The Strawberry Tiger-- I unfortunately don’t know much about what causes the mutation… so I’ll quote Google (whatever causes it, it results in the tiger having a golden color to make the long story short) “Due to no official name, people mostly refer to these tigers as strawberry tigers. This obscure color variation is caused by a recessive gene called the 'wide-band gene,' which is only found in captive tigers.” -Google
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
--The King Leopard-- it's basically the exact same mutation wise with the King Cheetah, but just with a leopard! (I think it's only been recorded and seen twice)

2, AAAAAND, In case anyone wants some inspiration for animal sounds for animalistic OCs and Species n stuff 👌
Each cat sounds almost completely different to eachother, I highly recommend watching if you want some cool ideas to headcanon or take inspiration from!

His body is still that of an otter because he refuses to conform to his true nature. But his stomach already has the necessary excess skin and wants to be filled out. He was born to be sturdy.

Question: Since the mutation that makes sphynx cats nakey (their hair is fragile and sucks) can just happen at random. How would a Clan treat a nakey cat born among them? Could they make them a coat?
I think, at first, there would be concern that it's some kind of sign. Hairlessness looks like mange, a very serious and contagious condition. This could be a terrible omen-- that mange will be brought down to us.
But it would become apparent the kitten isn't a fader, it isn't a StarClan warrior who came down to deliver the others, or a mere sign. It's pink and wrinkled, like a newborn rodent, but moves as the other kits do. Did StarClan... forget its fur?
There's another feared creature without any fur-- humans. It looks human.
I think the poor thing would have a lot of problems with the other cats its age and maybe the more superstitious members of the Clan, but a warrior of the Clan is a warrior of the Clan. Life would be harder for them, but there would still be love that exists.
They'd be capable of making them a coat, and they WOULD need it, but I can see that cat trying to go without it for fear of being made fun of. That's another thing humans do-- wear pelts all over themselves because they have no fur of their own.
Unfortunately they'd also be prone to a ton of really bad health problems. This poor guy would be in the Cleric's den a lot, and may need to retire early or focus on campbound activities.
Health problems;
Pelt is a LOT weaker; injuries from battle or even training would be a lot more severe, Cleric may recommend them not taking part in fights.
Skin becomes filthy, and needs special cleaning. There is no fur to absorb the oil that the skin naturally makes to keep the coat healthy, causing buildup.
Even with proper cleaning, the skin is super prone to rashes, lesions, and constant irritation. Wash TOO MUCH and the skin will become dry and chapped.
SUNBURN. Especially in WindClan, where the warrior might spend a lot of time on the open moor in daylight, and RiverClan, where light reflecting off the water could cause an intense burn. It would be recommended the warrior take night shifts, but this could be an issue because night is cold. (BB!Cats are crepuscular).
Additionally; such severe, uniquely-placed sunburns are something Clerics wouldn't see very often. Lack of medical experience with these sorts of injuries could prove dangerous.
Ear infections. Cats naturally have hair in their ears, which their earwax production accounts for.
Both heatstroke AND frostbite. Very bad temperature regulation leading to severe ailments. Fur helps stabilize body temperature.
So in conclusion...
Life would be very difficult for this individual. Fur isn't just full-body hair; it's almost as fundamental as a top layer of skin. This would be a serious disability for a Clan cat to have, and it may invoke the image of detested humans leading to social stigmatization.
But because they're clanborn, they are unambiguously a member of the Clan. It's likely that the Clan would make clothing for this warrior out of fur pelts, but in their struggle with internalized ableism, they might have conflicted feelings about wearing it.
The Cleric would recommend campbound activities, night shifts, and WEARING YOUR PELT, DAMN IT. They would need to take full baths every few days, not too much and not too little, plus frequent ear cleanings.

I know this blog is on hiatus rn but I wanted to share my fun idea
Imma make up a pelt mutation for the Hawthorns inspired by the donskoy. They have patchy pelts which are more hairless in the warm seasons. Some have more fur than others as well!
The reason this mutation is in the kinship is bec some cats with the mutation joined the kinship due to them living in caves and under thick forests which block out a lot of light. These cats are sensitive to sunlight so this kind of territory helps protect them from it! Though the bad side to this is that the caves and forests are colder so they often have to wear coats even during warmer weather.

Cat Fur Mutation stuff #2
(In case people want it for some inspiration)
Apparently I only scratched the surface when it comes to fur mutations in cats… very interesting!
Tumblr media
Source: http://messybeast.com/genetics/mutant-bigcats-terms.html
disclaimer: Idk how true that picture or the site I linked actually is, I just found it interesting! I may be interested in biology, but I am no biologist by any means
For These ones, I’m going to discuss fur mutations that have a ~~high possibility of being fake~~
Despite this however, real or not, I think they’d be great for inspiration like last time!
—The Red Leopard— Sadly the only case of this mutation being real was a poached and stuffed specimen from a long time ago (gosh I hate people). But anyhow; this mutation should be taken with a grain of salt because of this very reason however… as Hunters and Poachers back then (I’m not lumping hunters in with poachers to be clear, I have nothing against hunters) have had a bad habit of making up stuff to be cool, like with the Jackelope for example.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—The Maltese Tiger— This mutation apparently is of a Tiger being born with grey fur. This one should definitely be taken with a grain of salt though as well, because it’s only been seen apparently 2 times in the wild; and both times were back before anyone had cameras (let alone colored ones) so we only have the word of mouth to work with, which, we all know should be held with skepticism (especially if there’s no other evidence). However on a Wiki Page, it says it could be due to the genes becoming extinct due to the tigers’ declining population (but this is coming from a cryptids and myths wiki so you’re allowed be be VERY skeptical lol). The pictures below are edited reconstructions, and here’s the link to the Wiki for the Maltese Tiger: https://allcryptid.fandom.com/wiki/Maltese_Tiger
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
—The Spotted Lion— Right off the bat I’m going to say that I have NO IDEA if this mutation actually exists… as multiple sources say it does while other sources say it’s doesn’t, but despite this, I still think it’s a cool art idea regardless (which is why I’m sharing it)! This mutation was apparently when a lion or lioness doesn’t loose their spots they have as a cub when they become an adult. This one was definitely the most confusing one I’ve attempted to research… What doesn’t help with the conflicting sources is that when Googling “Spotted Lion fur mutation” and “Leopon” the same images come up… so… yeaaaahhhhh…. Take this one with the biggest grain of salt lol!

Selkieposting on Our Own Blog now! Although selkies technically can carry their pelts on their backs, and said pelts have limited shapeshifting abilities, this isn't done often. Why? Because, though they have limited abilities, they are still pelts - some sections of them have additional structure in the form of bones, even!
As such, especially with the very limited number of pelts in general that Exist, it's immediately obvious you're carrying around a selkie pelt - which in turn means that either you're a selkie, or that's Someone Else's Pelt (which is most likely stolen, by statistics alone), and with how valuable selkie pelts are (especially living ones, with the shapeshifting abilities that they can offer), most people really don't want to advertise that they have that big glaring weak point. A mix of safety in obscurity and not showing off your most valuable possessions every day.
