He regularly illustrated for French magazines and newspapers including the humor magazine Le Rire (the Laugh). In 1882, Métivet studied at the The Beaux-Arts de Paris (School of Fine Arts). There he studied alongside Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Louis Anquetin. Métivet served in First World War in Rouen with the 39th Infantry Regiment. He explored themes of politics and war in his work. In his later years, Métivet illustrated for books, and wrote two books of his own.
