So Quadrophenia[1].

Jimmy (Phil Daniels) only likes a few things. He likes being a “Mod”. His friends are all Mods too, riding around the city in their Italian scooters, wearing M51 Parkas, ties and trilbies, because that’s how you group the non-conformists together, mate.

All Jimmy ever wants to do is hang out with his pals. Together they live in the space between friend-group and thug-group, in perpetual violent conflict with the “Rockers” who wear leather jackets and ride motorcycles. They’re so different, how could they possibly get along? Even if Jimmy’s old friend, Kevin (Ray Winstone) has become one. Sure they’ll talk to each other when no one else is around, and Kev even helps Jimmy out in a jam – but no being public about it because being “hard” demands a lot of play acting.

More than anything, Jimmy wants to be with Steph (Leslie Ash) – the prettiest, most desirable of the Mod girls. He hates his working-class family and he hates his job[2]. He wants to throw it all away to be free on the open road with Steph on the back of his Lambretta, stopping only for sex and drugs.

One weekend, all the area Mods head to Brighton to party. The coolest Mod, Ace Face is there (Sting) and if Jimmy can only impress him and win Steph, everything would change.

The film is gritty with lots of natural lighting and location shooting. You get a feel for why everything seems so futile in this place. Powered by music from The Who, Quadrophenia is coming of age story of a lout.

In truth, I wanted to see what was happening with Kevin for most of the film because Jimmy has so few redeeming qualities. His immaturity is confronted, sure – but what will he do after he’s disillusioned with Steph, Ace Face, and even his scooter? Can he see the role that he played in getting himself to this place?

My guess is no. I feel like Jimmy will just become more loutish.

[1] I mean, I guess you had to be there? Or Something? I was looking forward to watching this movie for a long time and in truth I was underwhelmed.

Movie suggestion

Good morning on this fine Tuesday, everybody!

Right now, I have a great movie for you fellow movie-buffs out there to feel free to check out, if you like. It's called "Quadrophenia". It's based on a rock opera by The Who, one of the greatest rock n roll bands of all time!

Here's some information from Wikipedia:

Quadrophenia is a 1979 British drama film, loosely based on the Who's 1973 rock opera of the same name. It was directed by Franc Roddam in his feature directing début. Unlike the adaptation of Tommy, Quadrophenia is not a musical film, and the band does not appear live in the film.

RIP Brian Tufano (1939-2023) - Veteran cinematographer best known for his collaboration with Danny Boyle in films such as Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting (1996) and A Life Less Ordinary (1997) has passed away on the 14th - news just in. Another celebrated works of his are Franc Roddam's Quadrophenia (1979) and Stephen Daldry's acclaimed Billy Elliot (2000), for which he was nominated for a Bafta. He was also part of cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth's crew in Blade Runner (1982), providing additional photography.

Il 23 settembre del 1992 a Brighton il giovanissimo centrocampista iniziava la sua carriera con i Red Devils: diventerà una celebrità mondiale, calciatore divo per antonomasia

All’interno di una storia, a volte all’interno della Storia con la esse maiuscola e altre ancora, come nel nostro caso, all’interno della storia del football, troviamo qua e là momenti topici che passano in sordina, sotto traccia, rivelando la loro importanza soltanto molto tempo dopo, quando colti di sorpresa ci guardiamo indietro rendendoci conto di cosa ci eravamo lasciati sfuggire. Quante volte ci è capitato, leggendo un romanzo o guardando un film, di essere colpiti dall’illuminazione improvvisa e di ricollegarci a quel piccolo, marginale evento del primo o secondo atto che avevamo quasi dimenticato? Sliding Doors, Butterfly Effect, sono numerose le pellicole che hanno affrontato il tema in ambito cinematografico: da parte nostra, quel semplice e dimenticato battito di ali che cambierà non la storia del calcio, ma quella dei calciatori sicuramente, avviene il 23 settembre del 1992.

L’esordio ufficiale di David Beckham con il Manchester United

Siamo a Brighton, anzi più precisamente nella frazione di Hove, dove in quella mite sera di inizio autunno i Seagulls affrontano i Red Devils nel caro vecchio Goldstone Ground. La città costiera, celebre teatro delle faide tra Mods e Rockers negli anni ’60, riportate magistralmente sul grande schermo da Franc Roddam in Quadrophenia, indossa l’abito buono e ospita lo United di Alex Ferguson per l’andata del secondo turno della Coppa di Lega, che in quell’anno porta il nome della bevanda nera con le bolle più famosa del mondo, main sponsor della competizione. La gara è piacevole, frizzante: nella prima frazione vanno in vantaggio i Red Devils con un gran gol da fuori di Danny Wallace, prima di essere raggiunti dai padroni di casa nella ripresa. La partita volge al termine senza particolari nuove emozioni, quando a pochi minuti dal termine Sir Alex Ferguson sostituisce Kanchelskis e fa entrare in campo un ragazzino, uno di quelli della cucciolata di campioni che ha appena vinto la FA Youth Cup: si chiama David Beckham. Il ragazzo di Leytonstone fa così il suo esordio nel calcio professionistico, entrando ufficialmente in quel mondo che in un modo o in un altro, cambierà per sempre.

David Beckham, il calciatore divo

David Beckham è stato un ottimo giocatore: un piede destro quasi irripetibile, buone qualità atletiche e un modo di calciare le punizioni unico, praticamente iconico. Ed è un peccato pensare che non verrà mai ricordato per questo, o perlomeno solamente per questo. Beckham tra la fine degli anni ’90 e l’inizio del nuovo millennio incarna alla perfezione la figura della celebrità moderna, è il volto perfetto per i nuovi media, il calciatore più famoso, non il più forte, non quello che segna o vince di più, ma senza nessun dubbio il più famoso. Il matrimonio con Victoria Adams, la Spice Girl mora sempre un po’ imbronciata, suggella definitivamente il patto di David con quello star System di cui è ormai diventato membro a pieno diritto. Il ragazzo biondo del nord est di Londra è la prima superstar dell’era calcistica moderna e crea un nuovo fenomeno: un calciatore glam, tra pallone e copertine dei rotocalchi.

E il calcio? Lo Spice Boy sarebbe pronto a giurare che tutto questo non abbia mai inficiato la sua carriera di calciatore, Alex Ferguson ad esempio la pensa diversamente: il rapporto tra i due peggiora non poco dopo il matrimonio di David, che nel 2003 abbandonerà lo United per trasferirsi tra i Galacticos di Madrid.

Nel complesso, David Beckham ha avuto una carriera più che buona, a cui è mancato forse qualche acuto in nazionale. Con Victoria alla fine ha costruito una splendida famiglia con 4 figli, ha affari in America e con il calcio professionistico ha chiuso da un pezzo. Rimane però una celebrità, è testimonial di numerosissimi brand, oltre ad essere una delle persone più celebri del pianeta. Per un curioso caso del destino, il Goldstone Ground di Hove che quella sera di trent’anni fa vide l’esordio del giovane Beckham, non esiste più. Al suo posto, purtroppo, oggi sorge un centro commerciale.
