“Give Me Love”, is the new Hare Krishna centre in the heart of the famous Camden Town, Central London, opened by the Prasad Distribution team officially known as Food for All, by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada.

It’s already attracting so much attention, everyone wants a photo.

*George:* Well, we should try to see God in everything, so it helps so much having the food to taste. Let’s face it, if God is in everything, why shouldn’t you taste Him when you eat? I think that *prasadam* is a very important thing. Krsna is God, so He’s absolute: His name. His form, *prasadam,* it’s all Him. They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so if you can get to a man’s spirit soul by eating, and it works, why not do it?

There’s nothing better than having been chanting and dancing, or just sitting and talking philosophy, and then suddenly the devotees bring out the *prasadam.* It’s a blessing from Krsna, and it’s spiritually important. The idea is that *prasadam’s* the sacrament the Christians talk about, only instead of being just a wafer, it’s a whole feast, really, and the taste is so nice—it’s out of this world. It’s undoubtedly done a great deal toward getting a lot more people involved in spiritual life. *Prasadam *breaks down prejudices, too, because they think, “Oh, well, yes, I wouldn’t mind a drink of whatever or a bite of that.” Then they ask, “What’s this?” and “Oh, well, it’s* prasadam.”* And they get to learn another aspect of Krsna consciousness. Then they say, “It actually tastes quite nice. Have you got another plateful?” I’ve seen that happen with lots of people, especially older people I’ve seen at your temples. Maybe they were a little prejudiced, but the next thing you know, they’re in love with *prasadam,* and eventually they walk out of the temple thinking, “They’re not so bad after all.”

*Mukunda:* The Vedic literatures reveal that *prasadam* conveys spiritual realization, just as chanting docs. You make spiritual advancement just by eating it.

*George:* I’d say from my experience that it definitely works. I’ve always enjoyed *prasadam* much more when I’ve been at the temple, or when I’ve actually been sitting with Prabhupada, than when somebody’s brought it to me. Sometimes you can sit there with *prasadam* and find that three or four hours have gone by and you didn’t even know it. *Prasadam* really helped me a lot, because you start to realize “Now I’m tasting Krsna.” You’re conscious suddenly of another aspect of God, understanding that He’s this little *samosa.* It’s all just a matter of tuning into the spiritual, and *prasadam’s* a very real part of it all.

Let’s Donate Food!

Around 6 years ago, there existed a nasty and inconsiderate trend on YouTube. YouTubers on YouTube would upload videos in which they bought tons, tons in its literal sense, of food. It could be cheese, nutella, ramen, fizzy drinks or anything you could think of. Then they would put all that food in their bathtub, or an inflatable pool, and jump in it. Yes, they would bath in it. The food was often left unsalvageable. Some YouTubers were considerate and salvaged the used food, but many had much of it wasted. So, after years, I suddenly came up with an idea. Let us start a new trend. The idea is to have every YouTuber who had participated in this trend to donate as much food as they had used on their channel, irrespective of whether they salvaged it or not, and upload the video of them distributing the food on their channel. Used 144 packs of ramen? Cook all of them and distribute them among the needy. Bathed in 600 lbs of nutella? In 520 lbs of chocolate? 1500 oreos? Nachos and cheese? Spaghetti? Cheese balls? Spaghetti with cheese and nutella sandwich for main course, nachos and cheese balls for snacks, and chocolate and oreos for dessert. Bam! A whole meal is ready. Like this, you can actually feed the needy all three meals of the day. And I don’t want just those YouTubers participating. I would hope for others to participate too. I would want myself to participate in this challenge too, or even begin it if I’m that quick.

I've likely said it before, but it bears repeating: the argument of ethical consumption between vegan, vegetarian, and omnivorous diets is incomplete without discussing food distribution.

The environmental destruction involved in food production is vast and varied, from monoculture crops to deforestation for cattle farming, is also tied in with over-production and food waste due to poor distribution.

Food created for the community should be a right, not a paid for commodity. Obviously the farm workers must be compensated for their labour, as should everyone else for contributing to the community. In our current system we compensate labour with money, and that money should be able to get them the essentials they need, food, shelter, education, healthcare, etc. Yet it is apparent that that system is failing to provide those essentials.

Those essentials should be rights and should be accessible to the entire community that do the labour to create them. All the spoils to all the workers. A concern that may be brought up is, what about those who can't do the labour. Everyone contributes to the community, even if that is just through a kind ear and fine company. Keeping the community in high spirits is still a contribution.

What does that have to do with if I should eat meat or not? Well if the food doesn't go to the supermarket, it should get distributed differently, to homes and community kitchens. Food that would usually get thrown out because people can't or won't buy it can be accessed by those who need it. Less animals need to be slaughtered because there isn't as much waste. Also with more access to all food, there's easier choice on what you want your diet to be, no more choosing unhealthy or unethical food because it's cheaper.

Food should be a right (and so should housing, healthcare, and education but that's another rant), and we can't eat well and healthy until we address why it's not a right, and who is responsible.

Hunger is not just the result of lack of food. It can also indicate problems in distribution and storage of food. There is an urgent need to create integrated systems that will make sure food reaches all. India should work towards interventions that provide adequate food with required nutrients to everyone. The country wastes a significant amount of the total food produced each year due to storage issues. More warehouses and cold storage facilities will help solve the problem to an extent.
