“In 311 A.D. you could not be a member of the fighting Roman army and be a Christian. By 416 A.D. you couldn’t be a member of the fighting Roman army unless you were a Christian. In 105 years it completely reversed itself.
Killing people in the first three centuries (or at least until 265 A.D.) was not just a sin, it was an excommunicable offense. It doesn’t mean that Christians didn’t kill people. Sure there were Christians who killed people, just as some Christians committed adultery. But it means that the Church said, without any doubt, that killing was evil. The Church did not justify killing as a way of following Christ.”

I fall into self condemnation rather easily. I have been having wonderful quiet time in the Word and Prayer at night and last night I was thinking how I used to do quiet time in the morning as well and for a moment I felt as if I had failed God because I have two small children who need me as soon as I wake up.
And I do read a quick chapter and go through a brief prayer list the first time I wake up with the baby after 3:30a (cause I set my phone to turn off all other apps at that time to remind me).
But even without that, I do not stand condemned before God.
These habits are worthy and important but they are to help me grow and thrive and connect with Christ, not to save me. I am not less saved because my morning quiet time is a bit brief. It's evidence of the Spirit's work in me that I long to draw near Christ throughout the day, always more than what I do now.
These habits are for my growth, not my salvation. I cannot habit myself to heaven. Christ's sacrifice, and my acceptance of it, already made me a co-heir with Christ.
There is freedom in knowing that.

Like the Puritans, live in terms of the settled judgement that the joy of heaven will make amends of any losses and crosses, strains and pains that we must endure on earth if we are going to follow Christ faithfully. Regard preparedness to die as the first step in learning to live.

Follow me, Jesus told Mathew. Mathew 9:9
Often when we give our life to Jesus, we easily give into some form of premature calling to do something for the Lord, and there’s nothing wrong with having a desire for service. In fact, that is what everyone should aspire to. But the most important aspect of our desire to serve the Lord is to first learn to follow Christ.
Following opens us up to various spiritual realities that expand the beauty, majesty, and sovereignty of our Lord.
The message and life nature of Christ is not a secondary affair in the life of a believer; it is the chief point of spiritual maturity.

The First Principles Of The Oracles Of God
Preached Sunday April 28 2024 at Riverview

As soon as a person has any disordered desire, there is discord in the house - the person is at odds with himself. Anyone who has not yet completely deadened themselves is quickly tempted and quickly overcome. Every little thing throws him down, and small, bad things overcome him. But if he has satisfied his passion, this satisfaction cannot in the least help him achieve the peace he was looking for. So not by giving in to your desires like a servant, but by confronting them like a commanding master, you will find true peace of heart.

Habt Acht auf euch selbst! Man wird euch in den Synagogen vor Gericht stellen und auspeitschen. Ihr werdet euch um meinetwillen vor Machthabern und Königen verantworten müssen und sollt vor ihnen meine Zeugen sein.
(But take ye heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in synagogues shall ye be beaten; and before governors and kings shall ye stand for my sake, for a testimony unto them.) — Mark 13:9 | Neue Genfer Übersetzung (NGU-DE) Neue Genfer Übersetzung Copyright © 2011 by Geneva Bible Society Cross References: Matthew 5:22; Matthew 10:17; Mark 13:8; 2 John 1:8
