Hamish McHamish.

With all those Scotties by the Sea posts I have to point out that the dogs don't have it all their own way.

Hamish McHamish was a ginger tom cat who lived in the town of St Andrews. He came to national and international prominence after the publication of a book entitled Hamish McHamish of St Andrews: Cool Cat About Town.

Hamish was born in 1999 and was initially owned by Marianne Baird, a retired BBC producer, with whom he lived during his first year.[5] During this time he became increasingly nomadic, often spending days away from home, being fed and watered at various homes in the town. He was known to spend most of his time in and around the houses and businesses on South Street, St Andrews, close to his original home.

Throughout Hamish's life, Marianne cared for his well-being by ensuring he attended a veterinary surgeon every year for a health check and vaccinations.

Hamish had several regular spots where he spent his days. These were primarily local businesses near the Holy Trinity Church and Church Square in St Andrews. The creation of a Hamish McHamish Facebook profile, with in-character messages supposedly composed by the cat, raised his profile further; he had nearly 5,000 Facebook friends,and visitors to the town specifically sought him out to be photographed with him. A local bookshop had a "Hamish recommends" section, with cookbooks for fish and fiction featuring cats.

The interest created by visitors, students and townsfolk led to the publication of a book about his everyday activities. Hamish McHamish of St Andrews: Cool Cat About Town was written by Susan McMullan.

In January 2014, Hamish was chased by two dogs and escaped up a tree. He was helped to safety by university students and staff of a hairdressers he frequented to get his hair combed. This incident encouraged Jim Leishman, Provost of Fife, to ask dog owners to ensure their pets were kept on a lead while near Hamish.

He was featured on BBC television's The One Show, and his story also appeared in newspapers across the world.

On 5 thApril 2014 a bronze statue of Hamish by David Annand was unveiled in Logies Lane[by Jim Leishman The funding for the statue was raised by a public donation campaign started by Flora Selwyn, the editor of St Andrews in Focus - a community magazine..

Hamish died on 11t September 2014. A statement on his Facebook group said:

In the end, the chest infection that he had been battling proved too much for him and the kindest thing to do was to let him go. Thank you, Hamish, for the years of joy you’ve given us and for letting us all be part of your life. May your remarkable spirit live on forever in the town you loved... and ruled! Here’s to you, old chum.

His Facebook page is now called Hamish McHamish Foundation. The Foundation was set up to use Hamish McHamish the famous town cat's name for the good of the town. It is still very active, check out the link to take you there. https://www.facebook.com/hamishfoundation

[The origin of the Belle Park totem pole in Kingston, Ontario, at least in part. Queen Elizabeth was visiting for the Kingston tercentenary, and this totem pole was one of a number made at that time by Indigenous inmates at Collin's Bay Penitentiary and Joyceville Institution, two medium security federal prisons in Kingston. 

Who the carvers were, the inception of the project, whose idea was it, how it fits into the broader activities of the Native Brotherhood at Joyceville, all of that is still a little hazy to me - but the hard work of local researchers has resulted in a stupendous resource available here online: https://belleparkproject.com/the-place/totem-pole. It answers a lot of my questions and features the words of many of the carvers - a useful corrective to the Whig's slant here.

The Advance - the inmate newspaper at Joyceville - has a notice in June indicating OECA Channel 19 interviewed the totem pole carvers on May 18, for broadcast July 1 & 2 in Toronto. The Advance praises the tercentenary project as a "significant symbol of the role Native People have played in the evolvement of the Canadian people." Haven't read earlier issues yet to get a better feel. 

In terms of outside newspaper coverage, there is this dramatic image from April 17 crediting MP Flora MacDonald for getting the wood shipping from BC. Which is all about how great the local Conservative MP is, not the carvers.

In terms of the broader context, Seth Adema's article “Native Brotherhoods and Decolonization in Ontario's Federal Prisons' is pretty crucial, and available for free online if you search. The totem pole is still on the Belle Park golf course, which has become during the pandemic a tent encampment for Kingston’s growing unhoused population. The city keeps trying to evict them all - presumably to re-open the golf course - while local solidarity activists try and stop it.  Belle Island, where the park is partly located, is a site with great significance to the local First Nations, but was of course a garbage dump at one point because this is Canada...]

Songbird tunes fill the summer air, but it’s not birds that are singing. Lucy Gray, district twelve’s very own balladeer, lying legs crossed on the meadow flora. Spots of forest grass coat her honey skin, morning dew in shining pearls.

Her head is resting on your lap, chocolate curls coil over your thighs. As you place another small daisy in her hair, you can’t help but admire her as she lays there singing to you. It was always a great comfort to you, her voice.

It was reminiscent of early mornings, canary tunes to waken you from slumber. Capitol interval did rid you of that serenity, it just so happens that birds are fearful of demand and often, gunshots.

It was only the mockingjays that lingered on, imitating life itself— as if it was an act of rebellion.

But you couldn’t bear to cradle the act of protest, not when with Lucy Gray. Though she was anything but a conformist, her soul was wild tranquillity. She wasn’t exactly close to the heart of the mayor, or anyone really in the region, but she would always be to you.

No amount of revulsion she conjured would change the fact that you’d always love her.

You were torn out of your daydream shortly after her singing turned to humming. Glancing down to your lap where she laid, her eyes were now open, looking back into yours. As you lock gazes, a warm smile envelopes on her face, you can’t help but mirror her.

Lucy Gray lets out a small chuckle before brushing the back of her hand against your cheek. Her thin fingers glide over the surface of your face before stopping at your chin. Thumb and forefinger grasp just under your jaw, the palm of her hand resting against your neck.

She’s silent now as she watches you, eyes bouncing back and forth between your eyes and lips before lingering back on your smile. For a moment, there is nothing. The typical forest sounds now drowned out, it even feels like the breeze stopped. Just two loves, serene together in the woods.

You’d spent a thousand lifetimes dreary in district twelve if it was with Lucy Gray.
