Reflection 4
How did you integrate technologies–software, hardware and online–in this project?
Software wise I mainly used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit everything. I cut, trimmed and sequenced my footage and sounds, applied transitions, effects like Stabilizing and others to enhance the final cut and make it look more like an actual film visually. To film the footage I used an app called Blackmagic Cam. It's much more useful that the standard camera, as it offers many feautres like framing, colouring, auto corrections, various filming modes, easier control for zooms and focal length, and ability to change FPS, lens and white-balance. Even though I didn't use Adobe After Effects for my final idea (as there was no need) it was still useful to make opening sequence text for my Game of Thrones analysis video, which turned out really aesthetic and the making process was very professional. To record my voice I simply used my iPhone voice recorder app, and I then imported that audio file and deleted the noise using Audacity again. To make my moodboards I used Photoshop where it's easy to cut out the pictures and organise them.
In terms of hardware, I used my iPhone 11 to film everything on its 4K 24 FPS camera, and I used my iPhone headphones microphone too. Most of the software apps are installed on my computer with a good GPU, so there were no issues with rendering.
As for the online-in I used tumblr to create and organise this coursework. I found my soundeffects on YouTube and https://freesound.org/. Adtionally, I found many great tutorials, music and helpful websites using YouTube and TikTok, so my cinematographic skills also have developed. Also I used an AI website that would voice the text you prompt into it. (Later I had to modify it using Audacity to make it sound more distored and so it sounds like a phone call).

ONE MORE DAY
Pre-Production, Set-up, Shoot and Post Thoughts
PRE-PRODUCTION
I was very excited to be asked to be the art department for One More Day. I felt there was so much that could be done with an empty bunker and I really wanted to flex my creative muscles, there was so much to make!
When I went on the first location recce I was instantly sold and started thinking about the kind of props we would need to make this space feel real and believable. There was so many options to show the passage of time and the lifestyles these two characters would have to adapt to and me and Saskia (HoD Production Designer) got straight to work on how we could achieve the wanted mood and atmosphere.
It was difficult to choose a room as there was so many amazing locations we could have chosen, but we settled for one with blank, black walls that was easy to get filming equipment in. This choice was made because the walls were the perfect canvas to layer things on without a distracting clash and was dark and dingey enough to give the definitive feeling of despair.
I have linked the Pinterest board we used as a mood board below:
The day before the shoot Saskia, Vanessa and I cleared the room of the rubble lying around so our actors could be comfortable and the filming equipment was safe. We then started to decorate and create the set you see in the final movie, which I am very proud of. We worked really hard on the production design as it was pretty integral to the story of One More Day, and I think it really ties the film together.
COSTUME AND MAKEUP
In group meetings it was debated whether we wanted it to be hot or cold in the bunker. Me and Saskia had a vision of sweaty tank tops and boiler suits if it was stuffy and humid in down there, but our director decided that the bunker would be a cold, unforgiving place. To suit this Saskia prepped the actors by telling them to bring jumpers, coats and beanies as well as fingerless gloves.
I had a lot of fun doing the makeup on set! Before we started shooting I sat both the actors down and dirtied up their faces, using eyeshadows to create the effect that grime was clinging to them. I also made them have prominent bags under their red ringed eyes, driving home the idea they are both exhausted and hopeless. I used makeup to hollow their cheeks out slightly so they looked a bit more sunken in, as well as messed up their hair and dirtied their clothes.
I decided to give Ben's character Cam dirty fingernails, applying eyeshadow around and under the nail to look like he hadn't had a good wash for a long while. I had to keep going in and reapplying this makeup between most takes as it kept rubbing off easily, but I loved the effect and didn't mind the task
PROPS
Me and Saskia spent a long time designing the props for One More Day. In the days before the shoot we got together and tore apart newspapers, magazines and fabric to cover the walls in decoration, both to act as insulation in this freezing space and to give the characters some entertainment. We filled in all the crosswords, wordsearches and sudoku sections in the papers, as well as covering some sheets in noughts and crosses and random ramblings to give the impression that this was one of their only forms of entertainment in the bunker, with some particular sections giving off an aura of cabin fever.
I had the idea to cover a section of Cam's wall with beautiful women ripped out of a magazine. In my head he was the kind of character who would need a bit of release as a lonely guy cooped up in this small space, only pictures of models to keep him company. Its a little hidden in the movie, as its definitely not the main focus of the set, but I thought it was a nice character touch to give Cam some personality.
Tumblr media
In the middle of the two characters we set up a half played chess board, with Cam's side winning. This was is to foreshadow the events of the movie and give another form of how these two passed the time. We replaced some of the pieces with small bottles I had found, some batteries and a small panda bear figure to show that over time they had either lost the pieces or the chess board was found without them in the wreckage.
The dog food can is another prop I am very happy with. I was asked by the director to create two kinds of flavours for a dog food brand so we would not get copyrighted by an existing company, one being sirloin stake and the other chicken. I used a digital art software to create these two labels and stuck them around empty cans, making them just small enough that we could keep whatever ingredients packaging was already printed on the back of the cans. This was such a fun task to do and I love how they turned out! I will definilty be creating more props like this in the future.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other items in the room included the sleeping bags, food cans and child's drawings. It is implied in the movie that a child character called Sarah used to be in the bunker with the two men, but she has passed before the events of the film start. There is an extra sleeping bag on the floor and a small corner of the room still occupied with her drawings and fairy lights.
The blood at the end of the movie that splatters across Sarah's drawing to Cam was made by me before the shoot. It consisted on soy sauce, water, fake blood and coca powder. I wanted to make a realistic looking fake blood as it is a pet peeve of mine when blood in movies is not an accurate colour or consistency, so I tried to make it look as close as possible to the real thing. When I was told I would have to spray it across the drawing at the end of the film I made sure to do a few splatter tests in my bath at home to get the angle right, though when it came to it on the day it was still a very difficult task to get right. It was difficult to get close enough to the drawing that the blood would actually land on the drawing and look good, but be far enough away that my shadow wouldn't get in the frame. It took a few tries and a few drawings but eventually we got the money shot! I also added blood to the radio at the end to show the messy consequences
Evidence of splatter tests + a good look at the fake blood!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SET
Me and Saskia used fabric to create the impression that Cam and Robert had separate corners of the room, draping the material along the walls to make a shelter for them. We also added some candles to have a logical in world reason for the orange light that shone on our protagonists faces. It was so much fun producing this set and I am very very proud of the atmosphere we achieved.
SHOOT DAY
We filmed over one day and it hardly felt taxing at all! The whole crew was really on the ball and got everything we need quickly and efficiently with no incidents. We all had to take regular air breaks to save our lungs from the dusty bunker, even if we were wearing masks, but it wasn't a problem to get the film finished in time. Me and Saskia kept on top of continuity and I often reapplied makeup or fixed clothes, but most of the time we enjoyed watching the scenes play out in front of us. From beginning to end the crew was on roll and it truly went so smoothly. The only thing I had trouble with was the ending blood shot!
If I could have changed anything I would have added even more set dressing and made everything a bit grimier. They have been down there for at least a year and a half, and in my opinion everything looks too clean. I wish I had dirtied up my dog food cans slightly more! Everything needed a bit more of a layer of dirt. I also wish the blood shot had been slightly better, but I am very happy with what we have.
Overall a fantastic experience that really gave me the chance to be creative and expand my skills in production design.

Costume design
I had so many ideas for the costume for each character, and after discussing some inspiration points with Alfie and India I was really excited to get started on creating the designs. Mine and India's initial idea for Cam's costume was to dress him in a boiler suit that would be tied around his waist with a stained grey t-shirt. We thought this would be good because in initial planning stages there was going to be a shot where audiences could see Cam after he kills John and Alfie and Duncan wanted the impact to be shown using fake blood. We thought it could look interesting to splatter some fake blood onto the front of his shirt, and to make it more obvious, it would show up more on a light grey t-shirt.
However after discussing the temperature of the room with Alfie and Duncan, I wanted to lean more into using layers and warm textures. I took inspiration from films such as Snowpiercer and Prisoners as I think they capture the tone and colour palette that I had previously discussed with Alfie.
Tumblr media
initial colour palette
For the overall costume colour palette, I wanted to lean into using earth tones; blues, greens and browns in particular. I think this works well with the dark theme of the film, and I wanted to add some lighter greens as well to stand out from the dark background of the room.
I then broke my planning down to the two characters, focusing on the information that the production team have given me. I started off with Cam (played by Ben), using Snowpiercer as the main influence. I made a moodboard on milanote so that Alfie could give me pointers as I made it to ensure to change anything he wanted.
Tumblr media
Moodboard for Cam
I made a colour palette that I wanted to stick to, giving Cam darker and colder colours to represent his cynical personality. I want to add pop's of lighter colours but also keeping it cold, so I added lighter blues and greys. I want Cam to wear a black hat and a big long black coat to keep warm, to show that he is more practical, prepared and ready for what's to come. I used inspiration from other thrillers/dramas such as The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Pale Blue Eye (2022) and The Grey (2011).
Tumblr media
Better look at the colour palette for Cam
For John, I wanted to bring out his softer, sentimental and unsuspecting traits in his costume. This is why I decided to give him a warmer colour palette, with more colour to hint the fun past he had with his younger sister, Sarah. Something that Alfie and I had extensive conversations about was the way that we can represent Sarah's character in a way that seems authentic and subtle, not too on the nose. We settled on using a child's charm bracelet, adding a pop of colour to John's costume. We also thought that it add's even more tragedy to the idea of his death at the end of the film, since this item alone makes us feel more sympathy for his character.
I want to dress him in a warm woolly jumper, with no coat to show that he is not prepared for what's to come, indicating to the audience that he has given up on carrying on this journey. Alfie also want's him to be wearing circular glasses, which I think would look very cool, especially if they were cracked, to show that they have already endured a lot of stress and trouble.
For John, I used inspiration from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, The Banshee's of Inisherin, and again, Snowpiercer.

I had so much fun making these mood boards and sharing them with the team, and I am so excited to collect items for these costumes!!

Moodboard
I have created a mood board of what direction I want my chosen pictures to head in.
I love the warmth that the top row of images taken by Derek Henderson and how the film effect makes them very crisp while having the feeling of being very old and 'vintage'. The images are very still and calm which I really like.
I am inspired by the black and white photos by Cam Hay because of the overall softness of the images. I feel it would provide great variance to my series of photos. I love the way the light rays are very prominent and each image is very dependent on the focus of the lens.
Tumblr media
I chose the photograph with the man in the bucket hat and the girl with the blurry hair because like I have said in previous Tumblr posts, I am very inspired by blurred motion pictures and want to involve them in my submission for this class. Personally, I feel the blurred motion pictures really capture what it's like to be in a place where I grew up/my favourite place because it shows how full of life they are and why you think they are special.
My last inspiration images are the 3 right-hand side bottom ones taken by Chevron Hassett who we looked into in week 1. Since seeing his work in week 1 I have grown further appreciation for the way he captures such still and calm photographs. I am inspired by the crispness of each photo and the range of angles he's used in these 3 images.
I think having the combination of crisp calm images mixed with soft images and also motion blurred images in my final submission, I will achieve a happy and strong variety of images to show the audience what my favourite places in Auckland are and what places relate to me.

DYNAMIC MOODBOARD ( 2 / ? ): THE BREAKFAST CLUB (EXCEPT NOT REALLY)
“scott, did you really add me to a group chat on instagram and named it ‘the breakfast club (except not really)’?” flynn asked, folding her arms across her chest.
cam gave her a genuine smile. “but of course, murphy! i added you, and wes and andy too.”
wesley gave him a confused look. “why ‘the breakfast club’?”
“would you rather i have gone with ‘the scooby doo gang’ and then switched out andy’s toyota for a psychedelically painted van?” cam asked.
“you are not switching out my toyota for a van!” andy pouted. “and what’s wrong with ‘the breakfast club’ anyway, murphy? it is one of the most iconic films of the eighties.”
flynn rolled her eyes, pinching the bridge of her nose and squeezing her eyes shut. “what did i do to get stuck with you lot?”
“oh c’mon now, flynn! we’re all friends here,” wes smiled, wrapping an arm around her shoulder while she groaned.

Art asks: Classical, Gothic, Neoclassicism, Pre-Raphaelite. My guess for your fave art movement, based solely on the only other art movements I can think of in my limited knowledge of art is ...expressionism or fauvism???
Classical - What Olympian God Would You Be
well if i was one of the already established god, I think i’d be Hephaestus? i’ve always had a soft spot for the guy, and they always forget about him in movies about greek myths, plus he’s the god of artisans. If I was a brand new god though i’d want to be the god of like learning and creativity.
Gothic - Favourite Historic Building
Can I be such a cheat and say the backs of Cambridge? it is such a serene thing to do on a summers day to drift along the Cam in a punt looking at the cobbled together lawns a facades of the colleges. If I can’t say that then i’ll say the Notre Dame in Montreal. its a weird choice I know, and such a young building, but I cannot describe the feeling of awe you get walking through the doors the first time to see a sea of gold and blue
Neoclassicism - What Do You Want To Come Back Into Fashion
kind of hard to say because I’m a firm believer in the idea that anything you like can be in fashion if you know how to pull it off, but I love the gauzy yet structured skirt and blouse look of the 1910s, so lets have a round of that please
Pre-Raphaelite - What Book Do You Want A Film Adaptation Of
The Secret History by Donna Tartt. look, i’m a dark academia nerd. I didn’t ever realise I was till I fell into a tiktok hole and realised my room already looked like a dark academia moodboard, and that book is like the og dark academia text. its been my favourite book since like 2012, but the purchasing of the rights have got so complex it’s never going to happen. I’d also LOVE to see Amberlough by Lara Elena Donnelly, because the GLAMOUR, THE HEARTBREAK, THE POLITICAL COMMENTARY, THE STRIPPING
And as for my favourite art movement, I am a fan of expressionism, but at the end of the day, i’ll always be a slut for Art Deco

What’s... what the gay Jason Bateman show
OH. FUCKING. BOY.
Let me tell you about this show. This show. This fucking beautiful, awful, terrible, amazing, gay sHOW.
So, Jason Bateman did a Vanity Fair interview on YT talking about his biggest roles. Not all of them were really big or iconic, unlike the GQ one, which I highly recommend. So, anyways, he does the VF interview and he brings up this short-lived show in 2001, because his career has been like almost exclusively short lived TV shows since he first popped up in like one season of Little House on the Prairie. And this show was called Some of My Best Friends. And the conceit of the show is that a gay man and a straight man live together. Oh the hilarity!
Trust me, he was very much making the same sarcastic jokes about that, about how “apparently that was progressive back then”. And he already said it in the interview, but one look at this picture tells you who exactly the gay man is supposed to be:
Tumblr media
That’s right, it’s Jason Bateman playing a gay man. But, like, a Will Truman gay man with a Jack best friend sort of thing. It lasted nine episodes. It’s a dumbass concept based off a film written by a straight man that based it off his own experiences I guess and he was really trying his best to be a good ally. But like…it’s not good lol.
So, the full set-up is that Jason Bateman’s character—whom we call gay Michael since it’s gay Michael Bluth—was living with his bf, got home one day and found the bf left him. He puts out an ad for a roommate and calls himself a “GWM” - gay white male. This Italian—they emphasize him being Italian so much, so I just call him Italian dude—wants to be an actor and needs to get out of his controlling mother’s house. So, he sees “GWM” and thinks it’s “guy with money”. Eventually he realizes what it really means and after at first freaking out, the pilot ends with them deciding to stay roommates. And the remaining episodes are just wacky hijinks and misunderstandings.
Now, I love sitcoms of all kinds. And I love truly awful shows, too. And so when I found out all the episodes are on YouTube, I fucking rejoiced. As did @theonewherelaurynhasablog. She gets me that way lol.
So back in February, after I got home from work one day, we sat down to rabbit them (RIP, man). We invited others btw and got no interest. Whatever, it was their loss.
And yes, it was awful. But also not awful. There were jokes that landed. Stories that I found highkey hilarious—as did Lauryn, btw.
There was a very weirdly delightful episode where gay Michael hangs out with his very gay friend and the Italian dude’s mother and ends up, after some persuading, giving her sex tips. There’s an episode where he helps Italian dude throw his parents a big anniversary party and shit goes down. There’s an episode where Italian dude think gay Michael is into him and then vice versa. It’s all so dumb.
But weirdly funny.
And so fucking shippable.
The last episode we ended up watching—I think we have one more left but like I had work the next day and she had uni—they find a stray dog and, after some convincing, gay Michael allows them to take it in. They become a fucking family. But Italian dude has gay panic because a girl in their building assumed he was in a relationship with gay Michael. Eventually, since it’s a sitcom, the owners find the missing ad and take the dog back and gay Michael is so sad because they were a family and he liked that!!!
Keep in mind btw that his fucking sister is his LANDLORD! He has a family!!!
So, what does Italian dude do to make it up to him for his gay panic and all?
HE BUYS THEM A FUCKING FISH!
SO THEY CAN BE A FAMILY TOGETHER!!!!!
WHAT STRAIGHT GUY DOES THAT??????
So, yeah, we ended up loving it despite how  horrible it was. We were planning an AD fanfic around it—Blunder style, obviously, with gay Michael being Tony and Gob as the Italian dude, Lindsay as his best friend, Sally as the landlord, and Michael and Tracey were going to be the over-involved “parental” roles. IF we ever have the time, maybe we’ll make it happen. We had an over-arching plot starting anyways like it’s so easy to make this straight story into a straightbait story.
But, again, the show’s not good. It’s not horrible, but it ain’t good. And, yes, I’m glad it got cancelled or else we probably wouldn’t have gotten AD. Still, it’s really fun. And, as an added bonus, YT has both the pilot AND the unaired pilot.
Best part of the unaired pilot, you ask? Well, it’s almost exactly the same, except a different woman playing the Italian dude’s mother, bUT! BUT!!!! For whatever reason, all the transition music is “Blue (Da Ba Dee)”. For LITERALLY! NO! REASON!!!
Yes, we watched both.
Anyways, I’m sorry this got so long, but I am so fucking passionate about this show. I love dumb, awful, multi-cam sitcoms like this. I love trash TV in sitcom form. And this is as trashy yet as good as it gets. So bad it’s good to the max.
And today Lauryn brought it up in a discord server we’re in and then made that moodboard and I told her to publish it so I could have it somewhere and that’s why it’s up months after we watched it.

Jimin is a makeup artist in a company for an idol and Jungkook is an office worker who recently got a promotion. After him and Jungkook adopt a boy, Jimin decides to stay at home to take care of him. Missing his work too much, Jimin decides to become a beauty guru on youtube.
Jungkook’s promotion is the reason why they were able to adopt Minjae who is still only a year old when they first adopt him. Jungkook can’t stay at home because of his new position and Jimin doesn’t want to neglect the baby which is why he refuses to go on tour with the idol.
It’s fine at first. Jimin is busy with the baby and Jungkook tries to help as much as he can. As they both get the hang of it, taking care of Minjae much easier now, the initial boredom Jimin felt from time to time gets worse. Jungkook who feels bad because Jimin gave up his work for their family, encourages Jimin to start a youtube channel.
At first Jimin only needs to figure out how to film a video and how to edit them, takes his time to find out how he wants his channel to look. It’s fun, working with the brushes and colouring his face with different shades of colour each week, does themed makeup videos, natural and party looks, and so much more. One day, Minjae is sick, his sleeping schedule is disturbed, and he wakes up in the middle of filming. Jimin goes to him with his makeup half done. As soon as Jimin leaves the room he starts crying, also refusing to fall back asleep. So Jimin takes him with him to film the rest of the video, introducing Minjae as a “special guest.” Minjae is liked by the viewers so much that Jimin films with Minjae regularly from then on, sitting on the ground so Minjae can sit with him in front of a huge mirror.
As Minjae gets older, and Jimin slowly gets a bigger audience, he “helps” his dad more and more with his videos. He gives Jimin the brushes but usually puts them in his mouth. Chubby cheeks full with brushes, three in each hands and lipstick on his lips cause he's trying to imitate his daddy. The first time it happens, Jimin screams and the baby gets frightened, chin wobbling and then fat tears rolling down his cheeks. He lets the brushes fall immediately and wails. Jimin doesn’t edit out the scene of him consoling Minjae.
Once Minjae crawls into Jimin’s lap and tries to paint his face. The next time, Jimin lets Minjae do his makeup and asks Minjae which colours he should use. But Minjae doesn’t always corporate, too antsy to sit still for multiple hours. It gets even harder to film his videos as Jimin’s channel gets bigger, people also having found out that he used work for that idol. So Jungkook, now more settled in his new job, asks his boss if he can work from home sometimes. So when Jimin is filming his videos, he takes care of Minjae. One day, he walks in on Jimin filming his video because Minjae is crying again and Jimin lets that part in. As soon as the video is up, his comment section blows up with questions about the hot man.
Fulfilling the wishes of his followers, Jimin asks Jungkook to be in one of his videos and does Jungkook’s makeup. From then on Jungkook tries to be as involved in Jimin’s videos as much as he can because he likes being part of something that means so much to Jimin. Soon he also starts filming Jimin and Minjae, and calls those videos “Dad Cam” or “Kookie Cam.” Jimin tells him to use only one because both have the same content anyway but Jungkook likes both too much to decide so he does both.
With time, Jimin finds himself clueless about what to do again. He’s getting out of ideas what to film, having done all kinds of makeup tutorials, and he doesn’t want to change the focus from the makeup. Minjae also gets older and starts going to kindergarten which leads to Jimin having more time on his hands.
It’s a miracle when Jimin gets a job offered from his old company and he thinks hard about whether he wants to continue being a stay at home dad, continue with his youtube videos and be there for Minjae just as much as he was before, or if he wants to take the offer from his company because Minjae doesn’t need him as much as before and he doesn’t know what to film anymore anyway.
In the end, he settles for working half-time and still trying to upload videos regularly. That way he also has enough time for Minjae and Jungkook.
Written with my lovely @socappa who also helped me a lot choose the pictures for the moodboard.

Documentary Film - Week 3
This week, we’ve decided roles, James has talked us through his vision for the film and we’ve began locking in bands for interviews.
The roles are now:
James Fox: Director
Eilis Fraser: Sound
Tom Spurin: Producer
Jake Somerville: Editor
Findlay Carter and myself: Cinematographer/Camera Operator
We’ve agreed to share a lot of responsibilities on set so these are reasonably loose.
Tumblr media
This is the mood board Findlay made for camera inspiration. He’s expanded on my first moodboard/notes and it looks like we’ll be able to shoot something with a really evocative look and feel. We’re wanting a grainy, energetic, warm look that blends together archive footage, live gig footage and interviews. Findlay wants to use some small cameras, like GoPros, on the stage to get some up close footage without disrupting the performance which would really keep the film’s portrayal of the gigs energetic. He’s also suggested using a camcorder - this was more for a vintage feel, but I have a reasonably new camcorder that could also work. The camerawork would still evoke the same ideas/feelings - crash zooms, shaky cam, etc. He’s added a lot, filled out the approach and I think we’re now on track to make something really fun.
Next week, we’ve booked out a camera and some filters to try out our proposed ‘look’. I’m gonna bring my camcorder with me as well, see how it all works together.
James has secured a couple bands for interviews and I’ve been emailing both the Barrowlands and King Tut’s, but am yet to hear anything from a manager. But overall, I think we’re going strong so far, lots of drive. James has a nice clear vision, which is broken down in one the documents on our shared drive - yeah, we’re organised. We’ve started collating a bunch of conceptual stuff: me and Findlay’s moodboard’s, James’ treatment, etc.
In terms of class this week, I’ve been thinking a lot about the intersection between realism in fiction films and “truth” in documentary films. During my Film Theory module last term, I was reading up on theories about realism. Kracauer wrote about the realistic tendency and the formative tendency. He argues that film is unique as an art form due to its ability to reveal reality. So, surely documentary is the purest form of film - documenting reality. But he also says that staging an action can actually make sure that the reality is shown more accurately. The example used is a mine collapse: this would be incredibly hard to film and get clear intelligible footage but a staging would allow for an intellectually/emotionally more truthful representation. No documentary can be entirely objective, having been made by a human with their own views on the world. Where they point the camera, what they cut out, etc, is all subjective. So, when asking which is the most “truthful” form of documentary, it’s an endless and fruitless question, but this is not to say it is without a point. The documentary, and art in general is influenced by the objective truth (what has happened in the world), the artist’s truth (how they understand their world) and the audience’s truth (how they understand the art based on how they understand the world). At each stage it is abstracted further from the objective truth, which we can’t even experience. So there is no one hegemonic, specific meaning found in the art, objectively true or not. So, what is the point of this question? I think it makes us really think about the story we are telling. If the filmmakers understand the truth they have found/created and why they have this idea then they can see if it is worth telling and how they can better tell it.
Another point I’ve been thinking about is that objective truth is something that is as impossible to show as it is to experience. There’s too many things that are true at once. People’s experience’s contrast and differ and the picture’s too big! We’re never going to see it all. But if we can limit it to - this is true in these specific parameters and the rest is still unknown - then I think we’re closer to an understanding. Some things are black and white but most of it is just grey.
Aaaaaanyways. I’m done - I don’t think I’ve explained my thoughts that well, but hey, I’m not a theorist. Just a lil dude who wants to make funky films without telling porky pies. Maybe every week my blog post will just be me pouring out anxious thoughts about what the hell is even a documentary.
till next week.

Film Genres - ‘Swallowed’ script concept breakdown
My idea for Swallowed is somewhat ambitious in terms of camera work / cinematography and special effects, but the concept is really exciting to me, so it was something I had to attempt to pursue.
MOODBOARD
Tumblr media
HOW I CAME UP WITH THE CONCEPT / MY INFLUENCES
The below films and TV show contain some aspects that I would like to take into my short film:
1.     ‘Under the skin’ - Directed by Jonathan Glazer
Mainly due to its horror aspects, the disturbing, suffocating feel. As well as people getting trapped in an odd environment. The fact it is set in Scotland is also a bounce.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2.     ‘Inception’ - Directed by Christopher Nolan
For the misunderstanding of where the ground is. A great example of this has to be the fight scene in Inception.
Tumblr media
3.     ‘The boy’ - Directed by  William Brent Bell
Again for the horror aspects, it is also a character that lives within the walls like my main character will end up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4.     ‘Doctor Strange’ Directed by Scott Derrickson
Similarly to the idea that Inception offers of the world and ground being altered but on an even grander scale.
Tumblr media
5.     ‘The Matrix’ - Directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski
Throughout these films have a trippy / altered world concept but a specific example I would like to consider is the scene of the subway fight, of course has much more advanced choreography for anything I was going for but I like it for its atheistic it is somewhat similar to the location I have of the vaults in terms of low lighting. But the main thing is the slowing down of the bullets motion this is very similar to the idea I had when my main character touches a puddle and the  ripple effect is slowed / looks jelly like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6.     ‘Stranger Things’
With the concept of the ‘upside down’ world we get examples of being swallowed like this still here.
Tumblr media
7.     ‘Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them’ - Directed by David Yates
Merely for the concept of going through the puddle/ floor a similar look as we see Newt when he goes into his case.

ACHIEVING THE CAMERA TECHNIQUES / THE CONCEPT
To achieve some of these techniques on a lower scale / on a student’s budget  we can do a few things for example, using bizarre angles such as dutch angle, hand held, in and out of focus, and shaky cam. Movement of camera will be key in achieving motion and loose of understanding ones surroundings this can be helped in the post production stage to enhance the look. Such as using the warp stabiliser on premier pro when going for the shaky effect to enhance this and make it more of a motion / trippy effect and not just a shaky camera. The puddles alone can be used to create some symmetry and confusion of what the surroundings are but a potential use of a make shift green screen for falling through floor / puddle scene is also an option.
